It's getting cold out, what's your go-to warm and cosy movie?
❄️☕️❄️ A Christmas classic? An indie darling? Or perhaps it's ~6ish Star Wars movies back to back.

As you know, I've really been trying to watch films legally if possible, since I tend to watch a lot of independent and/or foreign cinema and want to support the artists who make these films.
I'm really happy that last year I saw only like 5 films illegally (all mostly rewatches or some disney I refuse to pay for). The rest of the 260 films I've seen legally either on streaming platforms, in cinema or on tv. I'm especially happy about this since a lot of these films do fall into the category of independent films/foreign films/films by female directors/older films. What I'm trying to say is that nowadays it's really not that hard to watch and support independent filmmakers and not just the big studios.
Also I'm really happy about how my letterboxd world map turned out this year. Especially since many of the countries I've seen more than 1 film from that country.
Tumblr media
I still struggle to find various African films legally. I want to focus on that next year. And while the USA and English are still my most watched, in total the # of foreign films is greater than the number of films in English.
Tumblr media
Considering I stopped watching films for a few months after the invasion, I think this year has been quite successful movie-watching wise.

Tuesday, 23 May 2023
Yesterday ended on a pretty big cliffhanger, so naturally our first order of business is to spend some time with the undisputed worst character on the show, Johnny DiMera.
And look, let's be clear: there are characters I hate because I'm supposed to hate them (or at the very least I'm supposed to feel some strong way about them). There are characters who have potential but through some combination of writing and performing, they don't quite grab me. And then there's Johnny. Johnny is an entitled 20-something *filmmmaker* who hasn't made a single film. I've literally never even seen him pick up a camera.
He was born into great wealth and has never worked a day in his life. And mostly he spends his time negging the Way Too Good For Him women in his life and whining that they're not throwing themselves at his feet. He also bursts in on people seemingly at random to morally judge activities that have absolutely nothing to do with him. (Especially when it comes to his father's sex life.) Everything about him screams "you are not supposed to like this guy," but unlike, say, Colin, they're constantly writing stories from his POV like we're meant to find him sympathetic. I don't. At this point, I probably never will. And yet, they persist in showing us what he gets up to.
Anyhoodle, he comes home as Gabi is taking a quick breather from her non-stop marathon boning session with Stefan. And then he starts whining about how Wendy's still in Seattle, despite the fact that he basically ordered her to come back home.
Gabi encourages him to continue this line of pursuit. This is terrible advice, but this is the difference between Johnny and every other character: *Gabi gives terrible advice, but I still enjoy watching her do it.* And only like 30% of that is her exceptional rear shelf. (Again, this is canonical. EJ described it as "the platonic ideal of an ass." I'm trying my best not to be a creep about this.)
Tumblr media
Okay, enough Johnny hate (for now.) Now back to the thing we've all been waiting for.
Remember when I said I hoped that Eric and Sloan, walking across the town square, would actually see Talia and Colin land on the pavement in front of them? IT ACTUALLY HAPPENED!!
Like, we don't see anything especially gruesome, because it's not that kind of show. I just wanted the horrible emotional beat. And I got it!
Tumblr media
Inexplicably, both Colin and Talia survived the fall.
This led to a lengthy discussion in our household about how tall the Salem Inn actually is and the conclusion we reached is that we have absolutely no idea. These two may have just fallen off a single-story Motel 6-type establishment for all we know.
So, okay, Days. I'll allow it. *I guess.*
Wendy has indeed returned from Seattle, and has an excellent exhausted monologue about all the horrible things that happened to waylay her (including a stopover in South Dakota, which everyone knows is *by far* the worst Dakota.)
Li, as ever, stares straight ahead like David Puddy and nods when the other person pauses. Poor guy's just waiting for someone to bring him another pie. He has absolutely no idea what's happening around him apart from that.
And if you think I'm exaggerating, please note his jacket and tie. Li has been unemployed for months and now he's also divorced. Somehow he doesn't realize that he is bound by Narrative Law to be wearing sweatpants and a sweatshirt right now. Or at least boxers and a t-shirt. (Which I can say with some authority is indeed the uniform of the unemployed.)
I suppose he gives Wendy some decent advice, but it pretty much boils down to "you should date who you want and if you haven't decided yet, you should take more time to decide." Not exactly profound insight, but I guess sometimes you need to hear the obvious thing anyway. So, all right. Half credit, Li. But that's only because I like Wendy.
Tumblr media
At the hospital, Rafe gets up to speed on recent events and does his best to comfort Paulina and Chanel. He also threatens Sloan, *whom we now know had nothing to do with any of this* and that kinda sucks because I was actually finally coming around on Rafe. Chanel all but swears revenge on Colin and Sloan and, if Chanel didn't seem like a small child in her mom's clothes most of the time, I might think I was witnessing the start of some great new generational rivalry.
Tumblr media
Sloan visits Colin to tell him he's an idiot. Jada visits Talia to tell her the same. (Talia deserves less of this because she's been manipulated by an extremely shitty and abusive partner. But her plate should not be empty if we're dishing out "you're an idiot"s.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Back at Casa DiMera, Johnny follows up his 600th desperate text to Wendy with a desperate phone call. There's actually a cute moment where he hears a phone ringing just outside the front door and opens it to see Wendy standing there.
But this also means that he ordered her to return home and then she did it. Speaking of extremely shitty and abusive partners.
Wendy tells Johnny that she still hasn't decided between him and Tripp, and since the notion of dating two people at the same time never occurred to any of these people, I suppose we're in for even more of this pointless conflict. I recently heard that the show got renewed for two more seasons, so it's entirely possible she'll still be trying to choose in 2025, just in time for the show's 60th anniversary.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Gabi stops by Li's place to give him the signed divorce papers and inform him that Stefan proposed to her. Which is a classy thing for her to have done. Li, for his part, accepts defeat and stops defending his actions (which included trying to pull the plug on a barely-alive Stefan and actually having Gabi brainwashed to love him, which may be the most individually deplorable act I've seen so far.)
Tumblr media
Kayla approaches Paulina with "Great news! Duke's come out of his coma! Abe's going to be okay!"
Tumblr media
And Jada, after a conversation with Rafe about all the crimes Talia committed, returns to her sister's hospital room to tearfully inform her that she's under arrest.
YESSSSS THIS IS THAT GOOD SOAP SHIT. PUMP IT RIGHT INTO MY GODDAMN VEINS.

Blog Post #5
Wow, the film District 9 is simply fascinating. What makes District 9 so amazing is that it does what really a lot of people would fail to expect. It kind of has a different approach to what one would assume what the approach of the filmmmakers are. This is what makes me enjoy this film more than I would some of many other films and kept me watching it when a lot of times, usually I actually get bored watching films like this. The brilliance in this film is that though one would expect for the aliens that invade Earth to have ulterior motives, either to attack or to simply hurt the citizens of Earth, they actually comewith the intentions of seeking assistance from the citizens and people that reside on Earth. Like, wow. That is just simply so, extremely, fascinating. This really caught me off guard, personally speaking. As I formulate my very own short story for the final paper for my African American 112B Afrofuturism course I feel like I can take a tremendous amount of notes from. The world that I am seeking to depict, of course as I am writing this in my blog post, my world in my short story still remains in draft form and is not yet officially done, but my short story has a lot to do with a world filled with advanced technology, and a group of people that begin to take over the land with no regard of the health, safety, nor well-being of the others around. This storyline is what makes the world that I will seek to depict in my short story so very similar to the world that the producers and the directors of District 9 sought to present to us throughout their film. I like the idea of having a twist the way in which the directors of District 9 put, and I will seek to add one in mine. I truly feel like this is a way to entice viewers, a way in which some, probably most other films really fail to do. This way of filmmaking is extremely fascinating and I really like it. Personally, a lot of times I get bored watching films, and I can constantly feel like I know what will happen next, but when I was watching District 9 I felt like that was not really the case for me. I look forward on expanding my story off of some newfound motivation, ideas, and I feel like in my short story, whoever reads it will see a lot of things that they could say came from District 9.

one thing i fucking hate hearing is when people try to tell me that digital filmmmaking is better for indie filmmakers than shooting on film because of price.
all i really want to say is that no. it really fucking isn't. if you are doing a project where you can rent an Arri Alexa or RED cinema camera, no doubt could you afford to shoot on film.
joe begos just made a neon-drenched movie about a killer robot santa clause and shot the whole thing on Super16 film.
Tumblr media
like you can absolutely shoot on film in a budget movie. anybody who tells you that its far too expensive is a fucking liar.

Sorry, Dad! (06/29 - 07/12/2020)
Sorry, Dad! (06/29 – 07/12/2020)
I’m going to try to keep this short, mostly because my brain has been a jumble of dial-up internet noises and elevator music for the past week, but also because I didn’t watch anything that good these past two weeks.
I’m continuing my peripheral-viewing of The Simpsons. I’ve made it to Season 28 (yes, you’ve read that right. Season 28. I think they’ve reached 30-31 seasons by now? The math…

why do we ask so many questions? Two people shouldn't know each other too well if they want to fall in love. But, then, maybe they shouldn't fall in love at all.
eclisse inspirations, vol. VI Michelangelo Antonioni’s Trilogy of incommunicability part. 2 - L’eclisse, 1962 If it’s true that we take a particular interest in the culture of the era just before we were born then my enthusiasm for L’eclisse may be pre-determined. I was born in the mid-1960s, only a couple of months after Michelangelo Antonioni had completed a cycle of four films which made waves in the international film scene. The four films represent a concerted attempt to create a new form of film language which he deemed necessary for the new postwar world. The first of these, L’avventura, had initially been met with boos and howls of derision at the 1960 Cannes Film Festival, but was quickly reappraised by critics. This was followed by La notte (1961), then L’eclisse in 1962, by which time critics and international audiences had begun to recognise the director’s bigger project, that this was perhaps one way forward for an artform that was in danger of endlessly repeating itself.
It seems to me that L’eclisse is one of the most interesting films of and about the middle of the last century, when humanity was caught between the promise of modernity and the threat of atomic annihilation. This air of paralysis hangs heavily throughout the film and partly defines the once critical term ‘Antonioniennui’ which was used to describe the psychology of his characters in this cycle of films. And yet in spite of its specific historical backdrop and its self-evident modishness in the early 1960s, the film remains a rich and complex portrait of the modern world that still demands and rewards repeat visits. On the surface L’eclisse is a love story, with its main character Vittoria (Monica Vitti) ending one affair with the writer Riccardo and moving on to a new relationship with the stock market trader Piero (Alain Delon). The setting is Rome – metropolitan, sophisticated, the subject and setting for Fellini’s La dolce vita only a couple of years before. We witness a breakup, a new affair, stock market crash, a car crash.
The character types and genre elements are all there, and yet the first striking aspect of the film is the deviation from the classic narrative structure of the modern romantic drama. From the very first frame, it sets out to defy conventional expectations and encourage the audience to create meaning from the film in a different way. There are no conventional story signposts, climactic peaks or moments of emotional resonance. It’s as if Antonioni has designed a classic love triangle story and placed it in a time and place where the usual story drivers simply don’t work. He places the actors like static objects into conventional seeming scenes, but the underlying chemistry is missing its catalyst. Every gesture, every declaration of love between Riccardo and Vittoria, or Vittoria and Piero becomes completely artificial when evacuated of all feeling. In this the director is supported by the beautifully blank faces of Monica Vitti and Alain Delon. It’s hard to imagine two other actors who could be better used in this film.
Architecture is a major character in L’eclisse, as prominent in the scenario as any of the trio of Vittoria, Riccardo and Piero. Indeed, the interiors, buildings and street furniture are often self-consciously brought to the foreground in L’eclisse to suggest that the environment in which the characters exist is at least as important in the meaning of the action as the characters and their motivations. Key scenes in the film were shot and set in Rome’s EUR district, the distinctively modernist suburb created by Mussolini. At the beginning of the film we see Riccardo and Vittoria breaking up in his sterile EUR apartment. At the climax, Vittoria and Piero agree to meet up on a street corner in the suburb, but, famously, neither turns up for their rendezvous. Is it that theirs was a fleeting affair that neither felt deeply; or that human connection is simply not possible in the modern age? Whichever, for the director, architecture and characters are both products of the age. By contrast we first meet Piero in the more classically designed arena of the Rome stock exchange, a place full of noise and wildly animated dealings. Piero’s character is only loosely sketched in, we see what he does, but we know little of his back story. And yet he too is quickly established as a product of the age, a self-absorbed trader incapable of extending any empathy; when a drunk steals and crashes his car, his only response is to ask about the state of his car.
