i was sitting at my desk in the lab, silently sipping at my drink as i skimmed through different books, none of them capturing my interest.

"it's not fair that you guys can breathe my air for like 10 hours and be fine, but i can't even breathe yours for 10 seconds without dying."

i roll my eyes at spider's complaint. no matter how many times the other lab hand and i tried to explain how the high concentration of CO2 would cause humans to suffocate, he'd never truly understand what that meant.

i close the book in front of me, grabbing my drink before spinning my chair around to face the group as the hiss of oxygen masks joins the quiet hum of machines in the mostly silent area.

"hey." standing up letting the group know i was here, kiri gives me a small smile before wondering off towards graces avatar, spider following after the 7-foot blue girl.

"whatcha got there?" lo'ak asks, motioning toward the drink in my hands, as he and his brother walk to stand in front of me.

"just a drink." i answer, looking up at the blue boys that stand in front of me.

'it's hard to believe that they're both similar in age to me and are 2-3 feet taller then most of the human here.'

"oh, thank eywa, i'm so thirsty," neteyam says as he slightly bends and takes the can from my hands.

my eyes widen, but before i can warn the boy about how he definitely won't like this drink, he's already taking a huge swig of it.

as soon as neteyam had finished swallowing the mouth a liquid, he immediately started coughing, burping, and panicking.

he thrusted the hand that still held the can towards lo'ak's chest as a sign to take it.

all i could do was stand wide-eyed and stare, unsure if i should run to grab a glass of water or start patting the poor boy on the back.

over teary-eyed neteyams' coughs, i could hear spiders' laughter echo from a few feet away.

looking over toward him and kiri, i could see he had his arms rapped around his stomach as he leaned back with eyes teary like neteyams, while kiri only looked up at her older brother with a confused and disgusted look before rolling her eyes and going back to what she was doing.

when i look back over towards the two brothers in front of me, lo'ak has a goofy smirk of his face as he tries not to laugh at neteyam, who is hunched over his hands on his knees like he was winded or was about to be sick.

i take a few steps toward neteyam and rest my hand on his back. "are you okay?"

through his heaving breathing, neteyam only manages to throw a hand up and make a noise, signalling a..... yes?

lo'ak could no longer hold back his laugh as he held up the aluminium can that looked miniature in his hand. "bro, there's no way you just-" his own laughter cutting him off. "i bet i can handle this little drink."

"wait, lo'ak-" this time i was being cut off as lo'ak take a even bigger mouth full then his brother, and of course he had the same reaction as his brother.

i take the can from lo'ak, as he too bends over in a coughing fit, and put in on the desk behind me.

kiri and spider make their way toward me and stop once they're also in front of the two blue brother, only now slighting sniffling and coughing occasionally.

"it's pretty interesting knowing that's how they react to drinking what they breathe." i mumble, "they don't breath soda." spider comments over hearing observation.

i roll my eyes at the painted boy. "no, you idiot, the CO2 that make the drink fizzy?" spider stood there for a second, letting his eye wonder around, "there's CO2 in soda?"

i can only manage to let out a grunt at his idiocy as i turn my attention back to the brother in front of us.

"i definitely did better than neteyam."

Just started a diet and I realised I can only drink a little water without feeling ill.

So I've had to drink ribena blackcurrent juice bottle and suffer the 6pt penalty to not faint off in this heat at work.

Sorry I saw your comment about Hashimoto's disease and I feel like i just have to ask about this because my partners have been really baffled by the fact that carbonation hurts my mouth so bad just like you described, and we couldnt find any reason it could happen online, is that solely a symptom of Hashimoto's or can that happen for other reasons like regular allergies/sensitivities? Im just really thinking about it now because ive had these unexplainable food sensitivities and i never have seen anyone else talk about it like that. I actually literally just assumed everyone deals with this my whole life until I made a joke about it recently and learned that in fact nobody in the room associated soda with the mouthfeel of Battery Acid. Anyways thanks for your time and posting that comment, it really made me think I should go see a doctor in the very least, I guess I did kind of just assume it was just some harmless quirk about me and not a possible indication of a very not-harmless disease so I do really appreciate it

Hi! I actually did some research and found something:

So from what I can tell we probably just have way more TRPA1 receptors so even small amounts of CO2 trigger a pain response instead of a tingly response, this applies for other acids too, but I think I'm mildly allergic to citrus so my pineapple issue is probably something else 😅

Hey you tagged that post abt John liking fizzy drinks? This is your excuse to talk as much about that as you want

... you have unleashed something in me

now typically you'd say "but red! harlan says john doesnt like eating!"

and to you I say:

a) respectfully, harlan mightve made these guys but the moment I started the podcast they became my little guys. john likes fizzy drinks

b) i think john doesnt enjoy eating simply because he cannot taste food.

and when he tries fizzy drinks for the first time, with his own body, oh boy it makes him feel more alive than yknow doin human stuff with arthur

picture this:

john has a body that looks mostly human. he's finally dragging arthur to see snow white and the seven dwarves. but oh? what's this arthur? food? in a movie theater? but won't the chewing noises be too loud? what did you say, it's part of ✨️experience✨️, oh well than we have to get some!

sadly for john, arthur does not warn him that sodas are very carbonated, as I call them are functionally spicy juice, and john curses out a little bit too much when he drinks and they don't get to watch snow white bcs they get kicked out :(

so he develops an intense distaste for fizzy drinks until one night arthur drags him to the bar because john! you forced me to watch a movie, which insensitive by the way, and then got us publicly kicked out really its the least you could do

and so he goes, because no one has ever said no to arthur, and there arthur makes him try yet another human abomination: alcohol. except this is 10000x times worse than the sodas, it has no twang! it's just bitter water that could possibly burn your throat and ruin your liver!

arthur, having grown up during the prohibition, took a fancy to it simply for the novelty but john wouldn't stand for such unpleasant human creations, he used to be the fragment of a powerful god after all

and so he orders a coke, which yknow yeah maybe sucked at the movies, but it was less sad then ordering water. but oh! wait this, this is actually not all that bad, if you know what to expect, it's sweet but not sickeningly so, and leaves a quietly pleasant feeling in your stomach and arthur what other drinks like this are there?

so yes maybe, arthur and john end up ordering almost every fizzy drink at the bar, cotton club, dr peppers, pepsi (after this john started the pepsi vs coke debate die mad about it) you name it they drank it.

and if they also got a little bit drunk and looked just a little bit insane ordering all those drinks to the bar-goers, well that was how things always ended with them anyways

next time! why john is an avid guitar player and arthur is probably a dog person with a cat personality!
