Y'know what? I want to know where the books that take place in 2025. The ones where the teenage protagonists were born in 2010.

I want contemporary fantasy where the hero is training undercover throughout covid. I want popular media references made.

While I don't exactly want people referred to as "alphas" or "skibbidi", I want to see more slang that we use day by day. I read Of Mice and Men recently and it was chock-full of slang back in the 1930s.

Right now, Rick Riordan is as close as we get in the popular media (even then, Percy was born in 1993), and most standalones I read have protagonists that today would be in their 20s or 30s.

Give me something that reflects how teenagers act right now. Childhood memories with phones, having cromebooks in school, Snapping their friends, hidden eastereggs with memes, etc.

Heck, give me some tumblr nonsense in a fantasy novel lol

He hoards guitars but he actually started his collection before guitars were invented so a significant portion of his stash is of lutes and mandolins

He has a few ukeleles and banjos but they’re the basically the abandoned middle child of instruments when it comes to showing off his guitars

create the most hideous amalgamation of everything you want to avoid in writing with every single cliche, terrible line, and a setting that drives people absolutely bonkers

and then right after release the sequel that is the literal definition of glory.

It was a poor lacking of judgement to respond with my name when the woman asked. Something was so clearly off when she did so- and it wasn't just her quite obvious appearance.

After an entire childhood of hearing horror story fae tales as warnings, did I not register any of it?!

"...I'm sorry, I can't take this name."

Her words bounce around my head for a moment, and I blink. "Wait- what? Why not?"

I should've run and just accepted her answer as is- get the hell out of the woods somehow before the faefolk changed her mind.

"Because... ah, well, this is embarrassing, but it's mine."

"I can't take your name because I already have it."

"So you-"

She interrupts me before I can even get a few words in, "I was hoping you'd have a different name so I could switch mine out, y'know? But now I have to let you go, which was quite the waste of in approaching you."

Okay, so she was kind of rude.

"Excuse me?"

"Well, I'm not exactly the social human-hunting fae of the old, I prefer to read a book and cast a spell or two within the safety of my home. That in consideration, I'm just going to leave now, alright?"

I don't have a chance to respond before she disappears in a flash of light, the spot where she once stood producing a small plant with curling leaves.

"But-" I'm about to protest, considering I'm still in dire need off a map, when the bloom of the newly blossomed plant unfurls to reveal a map to the nearest town.

"...ah, thank you?"

After losing your way for hours, you encountered an odd, multi-colored woman. She was cheerful, and asked for your name. "Ah…so you are… I'm sorry, I can't take this name."

Having a rough day and my husband brought me a little boat of chips that taste like mid-autumn smoke and I'm utterly delighted and feeling a bit better.

(I triggered a pots flareup cleaning my kids' rooms. Then stubbed a toe, splitting the nail, ow. Then my eldest's impulse won and he headbutted me right in the eye socket. I'm having a day.)
