honestly, i don’t write him much but i don’t see him the affectionate type…he’s more words than actions so there would be barely any pda also since he wants to keep a professional look, he gets urges tho.

he doesn’t mind it if you’re the one to intend kisses in public, he doesn’t find it necessary and you should know he loves you; he isn’t in much relationship nor has time or holds any importance to it so he’s new to stuff like that..

occasionally will give you a chaste kiss on your forehead , lips or on your shoulders but nothing really else. his lips are a cupids bow; they are a plum pink and warm on your skin. he smells like fresh herbs and white chocolate. ღ

boothill is the same as moze — somewhat. he kisses you anytime and anywhere, expect in super serious situations or certain ones. usually he doesn’t care what other people think or say, will shamelessly make out with you to prove his point — though that somewhat happens since he can get jealous easily.

his lips are thin and is a very pale pink that almost match his skin tone, his kisses can be a mixed of rough and gentle at times. he feels warm and his lips are soft and smooth, nice against yours.

loves to kiss any part of you, a feel of you is equal to heaven, you yourself is so soothing and precious. since the only thing he can genuinely feel is his face he loves it when you cup his face when you both smooch, your hands bring him so much warmth and feels so affectionate .

if not his lips; kissing anywhere around his face is so precious to him, makes him feel warm and happy, having a visible smile—you’re his happiness and his .. basically everything, everything about you is perfect.. ღ

it's so annoying when fandom has only two options for parent-child relationships: perfection or cut them off forever. even if the parent had issues they came around from and they worked things out, people will STILL be like it doesn't matter how much the character values their relationship with their family/parent/how mixed their feelings are, that parent was imperfect and no amount of change matters. cut off forever or else it's bad writing

sure, some situations call for that. sure, some people irl get to do that. sure, a lot of people use any flawed relationship to project their stuff onto for venting purposes

but it does concern me. like, have you never resolved conflict with people, especially when those people are older than you/family? do you burn every bridge when it gets the slightest issue? do you view people a generation above you as static, unlistening monsters too set in their ways to be human anymore, so that if they do come around, you don't care that things can actually be mended/at least better because you'd rather have uncomplicated anger?

again. some shit has to be left. im not condoning shit or saying you have to stay and hear everyone out.

these things aren't 100% or 0%, relationships can be all sorts of things and I feel like saying hey, what about us who don't have the option to cut off or have a messy relationship or would risk losing many other pieces of our family if we cut our parents off, ect? what about a relationship going at 15% at best where you see each other on holidays because of your extended family? what about a relationship where they came around and you still aren't close and can't trust them fully ever again but it's still a distant presence? I feel like those held at arm's lengths relationships are perhaps more painful to talk about, but they exist, and I wish that people didn't try to make it all so black and white. that's not how it works irl or in fiction

All that's missing is to put them on paper. I don't have to imagine anything, I'm already there with you, buddy :') I hc them as already married by the time the kids come along, and yeah... Spice is SUPER overprotective lol. Very, very gentle and doting, but fiercely protective and downright hostile towards literally everyone else as a consequence of that protectiveness. He won't leave her side unless absolutely necessary, and he'll be snapping at whoever forced him to leave her and then rushing back to her as soon as he can. (She feels kind of claustrophobic at times, because he literally becomes her shadow during those 9 months lol.) But really, he's at her beck and call from beginning to end. She's craving something? He gets it for her. She's sore? Hugs and massages and nice baths. She's tired? He carries her to bed and doesn't allow anyone to bother her for any reason for the whole rest of the day. She can't sleep? He's up with her all night, talking to her and soothing her and doing whatever he can to lull her back to sleep because she needs all the rest she can get. He's Peak Husband during this time lol.

(He's just... beyond happy. I also hc this as being after Spice has redeemed himself and been accepted back into society, but still not having 100% let go of his dark past (which he never truly will, you can never fully forget something like that, unfortunately). So really, he takes this as one of the greatest rewards for his change of heart that he's ever gotten, and as a sign that he really has become better. The day Golden came to him and told him she was pregnant was the best day of his whole, entire life. He fell to his knees and cried when she told him. Not only has he managed to forsake his destructive nature and instead create something, but he's engaged in the most profound act of creation there is: he helped create a life. And he created this precious life with the woman he loves, who helped kickstart his journey to redemption in the first place. It just shows how far he's come, you know? From a cruel tyrant to a beloved king to two peoples... from a bloodthirsty psychopath destined to live and die alone to a much more even-tempered man who has atoned for his sins and learned to be a good friend and person again, as well as became a beloved husband and father... still a force for destruction, but now in a positive way, not a negative one. It's been a very long road, but it really feels like he reached the end, and this victory is sweeter than any he's had before.)

...And same thing if they're cookies, honestly lol. Peak Husband. Burning Sweetheart Cookie here, jumping for joy when Golden tells him she wants a child. He goes hunting for a Witch Oven of his own accord, going to quite literally every corner of the earth until he finds one, then they go to it and he's just like a kid on Christmas Day lol. They're making the batter together and he's just grinning that big, pointy grin he's got, beaming like the sun. How much of his dough should they mix in? How much of hers? What will happen, what sort of child will they create? Golden thinks he's so cute lol. He won't even sit still while the kid is baking in the oven; if he's not pacing back and forth in anticipation, he's picking Golden up and swinging her around and smothering her with kisses, and going on and on and on about how great the kid will be and how they'll be a fine warrior just like him and Golden. He's yanking the oven door open as soon as that timer goes off and they both hear crying... she has to tell him to slow down so they can both take the baby out together (he was so excited that he was just going to do it by himself lol)

TL;DR: The woobification of Burning Spice Cookie on this blog is complete, he is now Burning Sweetheart Cookie, reformed villain who loves his bird wife and their babies with all of his spicy heart

And to feed you a bit of extra content (and to keep everyone on the edge of their seats), I shall feed you a bit of information about the kiddies:

There are two of them, a son and a daughter. The son is the older one by a few years

I did research and took inspiration from both Egyptian and Hindu mythology for their design and some of their personality traits (I will explain this in detail soon. I actually really enjoyed learning about these religions, even if for a ridiculous reason, and I look forward to rambling about all the little bits and pieces of myths I cobbled together to make these two lol)

Each one resembles a parent quite a bit (but I will not specify which child looks like which parent yet)

Okay, so I have been thinking so much about this (I have been talking aloud to myself for like ten minutes bc I've invested myself wayyy too deep into this), but I think I know why Miguel bothers me so much despite being my favorite character.

The writers suck.

Now, I know I don't have screenwriting credibility and I'm merely just a girl and I know that perhaps they can't cram all of this shit into the show and make room for literally everyone else, BUT I think the reason why so many people don't like Miguel as a character is because he doesn't have much of a character to work with. So whenever he does something that shows character (the Mexico storyline, the Stanford storyline), no one feels bad for him. I think that maybe if he had definitive arcs for each season, while weaving it better into Robby's arcs (since they're foils and tethered to each other), he would actually be likeable. So I wanted to show you what I feel like I would do to write Miguel's post school fight arc. Feel free to tell me your opinions. (buckle up, this is a long one)

I dont' think they went enough into his feelings with everything and that everything went a bit too fast (for Miguel) during the season.

perhaps they could've gone deeper into his PTSD, similar to what they did with Sam.

but instead it preventing him from going to school, it prevented him from doing karate all together.

it was clear early on that karate and Johnny slowly became all that Miguel cared about.

Johnny was sending mixed signals and Kresse's entry into CK was conflicting as their ideals were different.

Johnny made it clear that CK's mottos are a way of life, so Miguel was moving the exact way one would in karate irl.

Karate was his life. And it nearly ended it as well.

I don't believe Miguel would immediately still want to be so gung-ho about joining karate again after nearly dying from it.

Johnny would lose Miguel's trust and would fight for it back. He already lost Robby. He can't lose Miggy too.

Miguel doesn't want to be around him for now, despite feeling bad for pushing him away

When finding out he was paralyzed, it hurt to find out, but at the same time, with his conflicited feelings about karate, he would feel a bit relieved.

I like to think that when the surgery worked, everyone was happy but Miguel because now people are going to expect him to want to go back to doing karate.

Eventually he and Johnny have a heart to heart and make up, though he's still a little bit hesitant on trusting him

he does reluctantly join Eagle Fang and he tries to make an effort to train again and get past his fear

Though things still feel like what it was like at CK, which isn't something Miguel is enjoying

Plus him being the only shot they have for the All Valley is putting presure on him, mainly due to Johnny

The scene where he tries to kick but fails happens

He falls and flashbacks of the school fight happen

He gives up and says he isn't doing karate anymore

That is until the finale fight when CK comes in and fights the EF/MD kids and Kyler beats him up

he remembers why he started karate in the first place and starts fighting again

He chooses to do karate again

S4

Again similar to what we see (Johnny and Carmen, the intro to Kenny, etc)

I think he still feels weird about being back in the world of karate and latches onto Daniel more as a sensei now with the conjoint dojos situation (he's a lot softer on him knowing his situation)

Which pisses Johnny off and makes him jealous (he just misses his kid ya know?)

He tries to make an effort with Miguel but he grows more distant after hearing Daniel's side of the events during TKK

This season could heavily parallel s2 with Kiaz as they're on the opposite sides of the coin now with Robby being with CK and Miguel learning more Miyagi-Do techniques

This could also bring more tension with Lawrusso because of how they're both treating and training him and how Johnny thinks Daniel is taking Miguel away from him

(maybe a fight scene about this idk)

Perhaps Miguel starts feeling bad about pushing Johnny away as he very much still cares about him and sees him trying

Daniel does talk to Miguel about how Johnny does care about him and how he's beaten up about everything and how he wishes he could change everything

This will make the whole "I love you" "I love you, too Robby" scene a lot worse

Miguel feels lost again

The sprain he gets during the All Valley was the final straw for him as he has a panic attack and in a heap of emotions, he leaves for Mexico, not just to find his dad, but to genuinely run away from everything

Also throughout this season, I really wanted to see more of Robby being guilty for what he did during the fight but pushing it away until he sees what Kenny does to Anthony and realizing that history is already about to repeat itself

Also also we do see Miguel talk about collage but brings up that he wants to become a PT (did I take this from someone who reblogged my other rant, yes) and probably want to go Boston University (they have a PT degree program)

S5

Same as we see for the most part

I was hoping Miguel would bring up the whole "I love you" situation but he never did and I wonder why

I wish we saw bits of the car ride home from Mexico and the awkwardness between the boys (there's a good ao3 fic that does this pretty decently)

Perhaps Robby can tell that something is off with Miguel though and tries to spark conversation but the latter refuses to talk to the former because of the school fight

I think the break up should still happen

Both because with everything going on with him, the breakup would just be another stab in the chest, but also because that fucking scene was so good!! Like idk if Mary and Xolo get their flowers for that scene but I'ma need them to get their flowers for that scene

Now he's just this ball of emotions

Johnny still wants to push for the boys to be close since he's caring for both of them now (and ofc the baby) so like in the actual s5, he still tries to get them to talk

Now I would've preferred a heart to heart reconciliation (similar to samtory s6) but since the dudebros would think that's too soft and this is a fighting show, the balcony scene would be fine

Though I do think in a later scene, Kiaz should have a more emotional talk with each other

Miguel just talks about how hard it has been since the school fight and how everything keeps on changing and everything gets a lot for him

Robby tells him that he gets it and confesses how guilty he feels for being the one to put him in the hospital

And then I feel like the rest of s5 can go the way it did

i don't know. maybe this is too convoluted but I do think that the lack of characterization and constant mischaracterization of miguel diaz is due how poorly the writers went about him post s3a imo. i think they could've done something great with him in a way people felt for robby you know? they always randomly bring things up as a way to say "hey he has trauma too" but it's always at the most inopportune times and it always comes off half-assed instead. i love miguel so much because of his happy-go-lucky energy but he has so much wasted potential which is wild to say when he's the main character.

From what I've seen she does seem unhinged but in a, uhm... reasonable and tolerable way? What she does seems like necessary cruelty. Both guys are not exactly reliable narrators but I'm still curious if there's something about her that we will find out later. Or maybe her crazyness is a performance for colleagues and nothing else.

There's the Commedia dell'arte trope of Arlecchino serving two masters, but if she simply wants to save Fontaine it's a beautiful and relatable goal, there's nothing wrong with that. Alternative theory: she's loyal to Narcissenkreuz, not Fontaine.

(Narcissenkreuzers are everywhere, just like Rosenkreuzers irl. consider me a conspiracy theorist)

I'm also fascinated by the things she says to the House of Hearth kids. "True understanding can only be found, not sought" to a neurodivergent girl trying to fit it. "No one needs self-satisfied concern" to a guy with a savior complex. These are all not things intended for tying people to her, these are things to make them stronger and set them free. Their loyalty to her comes from a place of gratitude, not fear, they weren't coerced into it. Before the siblings' appearance I contemplated whether she could be a yandere, sweet to her followers and horrible to everyone who dares abandon her. This is something more interesting.

(I have an undestroyable headcanon that Childe has good intuition about people. he would have loved someone acting like a strict dad and he would respect a focus on survival. if he doesn't like her it means she is something else entirely)

I also wonder what happens to kids who are unfit for military/spying. I mean, there's Freminet but he's an engineer and a diver. Would a simple cook do all right in HoH?

I KNOW that it's that it's an adage on here that Brennan uses his own voice when he's going for a beloved traitor character (see [redacted] from [you know what season]) and I GET that the Bad Kids have a history with dragons and I CLOCKED that KVX turned their logo blue but counterpoint: Adaine deserves a cute nerd boyfriend if she wants one and we deserve to watch Fig and Co tease her as bad as she did when Fig was crushing on Ayda (not to mention whatever batshit insane sisterly advice she'd probably get from Aelwyn).

Anyway, narratively, it would be kinda unbalanced to have Adaine's first viable love interest be straight up evil when everyone else who's wanted one (shoutout to Riz "Why Are All of You Maniacs So Horny" Gukgak) has gotten a properly viable love interest (Tracker, Zelda, Ayda, and Mazey--though Fabian seems more into Ivy who I trust less lol). Not that things are fair IRL (or even in the game) but given Brennan's "I'm here to tell a satisfying story and have fun with my friends" approach to DM-ing, I would be a bit surprised if he was a total lost cause. Even if he is heavily in the mix of whatever shady stuff the Rat Grinders are probably doing I can see him defecting.

But of course I'm biased because I want this for Adaine, haha. We'll see what happens!

How I make characters, blogs, and plots: A guide by Bench

Hello! Due to popular demand, I'm making a post about my development process for making Pokemon IRL-related stuff.

I should note, this is my methods. You're fully free to use your own methods for making Pokemon IRL stuff! Don't feel pressured to copy me.

With that out of the way, I hope you all find this useful!

Part 1: Initial Ideas

Usually, the first thing I do when creating something new for Pokemon IRL, whether that be a character, blog, plot, or something else, is ask myself, "What would be a fun thing for other people's characters to bounce off of?"

@wingsofachampion, all the way back in late 2022, I introduced to the Pokemon IRL community because I saw all these blogs for regular trainers, and thought, "I wonder what'd happen if I threw a PMD character into the mix, how would everyone interact with them?"

For @goldenrodchef, I thought, "How would people interact with someone who isn't physically human, but is trying to appear human online?" (Back when I started his blog, he was trying to hide the fact that he got turned into a Pokemon.)

For @zoruascanbetrainerstoo, my process was a little different. I was trying to find a way to keep myself focused on my mainline marathon, and decided to make a blog about it. But I couldn't figure out a protagonist for it, until I had the idea, "What if this trainer isn't human? How would people interact with a Pokemon trying to be a trainer?" And so I brought back my concept for Illanero from back in 2021, and made xem the protagonist of the blog.

For @interregionalgyminspections, I asked myself, "How would people interact with a gym inspector?" For @askthelonelyninetales, I asked myself, "How would people interact with an immortal non-legendary being?" For @amewwayofliving, I asked myself, "How would people interact with a legendary trying to live among humans?" And for @obletadetective, I asked myself, "How would people interact with a detective character?"

Of course, this is leaving out the fact that many of these characters are ones I had made (or canon characters I modified) long before making their blogs, and simply ported over to Pokemon IRL. @interregionalgyminspections and @amewwayofliving are the only active characters I have so far that I made for Pokemon IRL first.

Still, asking the "What would be a fun thing for other people's characters to bounce off of" question helped me figure out which characters to port over. And it helped me come up with those two brand-new characters, too.

It's a similar story for making plots. Tropius' whole plot with her special name derives from my PMD worldbuilding, yes, but also from the question "How would people interact with someone being afraid to say their name?"

Think of plots as sorta a variation of Muse Mixup Madness. A time period where stuff happens to your characters, except instead of being variations of your characters, it's the main versions, and has lasting impact. Muse Mixup Madness lets you get as wild as you'd like with the variations. So get as wild as you'd like with your plots! Have your character catch that legendary, or undergo that mental breakdown, or travel to another region, or anything! Ask that question of "What would be something interesting to happen to my characters, and how would people interact with that?", and once you have an idea, you have the seeds of a plot!

Part 2: Development and Planning

Once you have that initial idea, it's time to develop it! There's lots of ways to do it, and I even use multiple ways myself! But the method I use the most is improv.

The details of the pantheon of Mew's world, and a lot of Breve's advice about gyms, all entirely improv, created on the spot.

I know, this answer is probably disappointing. But improv is a powerful tool. "Yes, and" can create masterpieces, it's what this community was first built on. Make up things on the fly to make your characters and blogs more detailed! It's how I first came up with the idea of Gen being an aspiring chef.

If that's not good enough for you (which is perfectly understandable), @paldean-ranger-brandy has made this lovely post about a bunch of questions to develop your characters. I highly recommend checking it out!

Besides that, you can also plot things out, planning for the future of your blogs. For example, I plan on revealing Tropius' special name eventually, but that's a long ways away.

For planning ahead, I like to ask myself three questions. "How do I want things to end up?" "What will cause things to end up that way?" "How do I build up to that cause?" I then fill in the gaps between these three questions, and I have a character arc!

Part 3: Staying Committed

I've heard from several people that they have trouble keeping their Pokemon IRL blogs active, which is completely understandable. I myself struggle with that sometimes.

My main advice for staying committed is to keep throwing interesting stuff at your characters. Things like plots, events, and relations with other blogs.

One of the biggest things that has helped me keep Gen's blog active is that I keep having him form new connections with people. Almost every time a new eeby pops up, I have him reach out to try to help.

For Illanero's blog, what keeps me committed is the amount of stuff in the mainline Pokemon games for xem to react to. Every time that something major happens in a mainline Pokemon game I'm playing, that's a potential new post for xyr blog.

And for Tropius, when I come up with new PMD worldbuilding tidbits, I usually can have her making posts talking about it. There's also just looking around my home to see if there's something she might not understand, like dressers, and making a post about her being confused by that thing.

One of my favorite methods of staying focused on a character is to have them play a game, or read a book, or watch a show, and liveblog it! I've done this with Tropius reading book 1 of Warrior Skitties, and Gen playing A Hat in Time.

Bonus points if the story has things that will emotionally impact your characters. Like a good media leaves us thinking about it for long after we finish it, have your characters think about the media they've experienced. Have them write analyses on it, or rant about it, or even make a fanfic about it!

Keep throwing things at your characters! It's enrichment for them, and for you.

Part 4: Taking Breaks and Letting Go

Not every blog is going to keep your attention indefinitely. Some you might lose interest in for a while, or even entirely. It's a necessary skill to know when it's time to stop, whether that be temporarily, or permanently.

Back in around March of 2023, I was getting a bit exhausted with Pokemon IRL. It was getting really tiring to keep up with. So I took a break, until June 30th. And when I returned, I felt reinvigorated, with fresh motivation! If you're started to get tired with a blog, or Pokemon IRL as a whole, a break might help a lot!

But sometimes, a break isn't enough. You might come back, and still feel disinterested. In those cases, it's sometimes best to say goodbye.

Take my old self-insert faller blog, for instance. I had taken a break from it when I started receiving anon hate on it. But even after I tried posting on it again, it still felt uncomfortable and unfun. So I decided to completely convert the blog into something entirely different, and stop writing my self-insert faller.

It might be scary to say goodbye, but sometimes, it's what's best.

Part 5: Conclusion

That's about all I can think of right now. I might make another part to this eventually, with answers to any questions any of you might have.

also side note, i fuckin love how voxus brought his manic energy to life with their voice acting

i think it comes down to the fact that his outlook isn’t miserable, he loves being alive and that alone makes a character more tolerable to me. he doesn’t give a fuck about how he comes off aside from his language, which compared to literally everything else about him seems like such a trivial issue. but that in of itself adds a lot of character. and the way he mixes formal and casual words to create this odd dialect that just tickles my brain. like you cant deny he IS entertaining.

Who have given the top 5 or more (or at least some of your favs of each game you played) best voice acting performances in the life is strange franchise in your opinion?

Oh, this is fun! This is my top 5 ranking, where 1 is the best:

5. Han Soto as Gabe Chen: I think Han's performance is really underrated, but he brought a very believable warmth and gentleness to Gabe that balanced his humor and would've made his character shallow without it. Han's actual voice has a steady cadence to it that you really hear in his performance in Alex's nightmare, where he both guides Alex through her past traumas but also refuses to let her give up. It's this mix of sternness and empathy that sells the delivery of "You were eleven years old!" and reminding Alex she doesn't need to be defined by her trauma. Also irl, Han is basically Gabe in streams and it's so wholesome.

4. Rhianna DeVries as BtS Chloe Price: I was as nervous as everyone else when I heard Ashly wouldn't be returning as Chloe in Before the Storm, but by the end of the game I fully believed Rhianna as a younger Chloe. Rhianna as a person [they use they/them now] is delightful-- if you've listened to any of their interviews, they have such an easygoing and fun sense of humor that's impossible not to like, and they bring a lot of that to Chloe. Part of it is the writing and directing too, but seeing a much dorkier 16-year-old Chloe was so charming because of Rhianna's performance. I still think about lines like "RIGHT IN THE DICK," "but also how well they voice Chloe's more vulnerable moments, like talking quietly to Rachel in her room in "Hell is Empty." I can also tell how much playing Chloe, a queer character, means to them, so I'm glad they got the opportunity to share Chloe's character with Ashly.

3. Hannah Telle as Max Caulfield: Hannah will always be Max to me and I cannot imagine anyone else playing her. What makes Max an interesting case is her character is very understated for a protagonist role in a narrative-driven game. In the original at least, her only big dramatic scene is when she shouts, "This is my storm. I caused this, I caused all of this!" Because Max in the first game is more of a blank slate protagonist, her personality is deliberately more muted compared to Chloe's, Kate's, Victoria's, Nathan's, etc. spikes of emotion and ability to perform more dramatically. Because of that, Hannah voicing all the mundane moments is what makes her performance as a whole so memorable. Overall, she has such a wonderfully sweet, gentle voice that makes it so enjoyable listen to all of Max's hours of inner monologuing, and I love that Hannah's natural voice simply is Max. That being said, I also love Max's more expressive moments in DE, like her wisecracking jokes and when Safi speaks as her, you can hear a distinct difference in Hannah's tone, pitch, and cadence to mimic Olivia Abiassi. I love Hannah's performance for its subtleties over the signature scenes.

2. Erika Mori as Alex Chen: Back in 2021 I wrote an entire post about how much I loved Erika's performance as a first time VA and mocap actress. She embodied Alex-- vocally, physically, and facially-- so fully and so well. I think her standout moments are the nightmare sequence, but these huge emotional moments pay off because Erika also put in the work to capture Alex's little moments too: her playfulness, her humor, her heart, her flirtatiousness, her awkwardness, and her vulnerability.

1, Ashly Burch as LiS1 Chloe Price: Ashly so deserves the big career she's been able to achieve after LiS1, because this is still one of her standout roles. Chloe is deliberately very unlikable in LiS1: she's sharp and quick to anger and unyielding and immature, but DN still presents her as the girl worth saving, and Ashly captures that side of her flawlessly with her equal parts confidence and charisma. Of course, Ashly's standout scene is when she finds Rachel's body in the junkyard and drawn from Ashly's own personal experience with loss-- her cries are gutting. But I also (similar to Rhianna) love when she captures Chloe's humor and dopiness, like "Or did you just rewind because I tried to steal the chair? Shit, I'm confused"; "And then you rewind and I steal the key, and... uh..."; ". She also has to voice Chloe in multiple timelines: she nails younger Chloe without sounding too cartoonishly kiddie, and you can really hear her weariness in the alternate timeline when she's disabled. Max may be the protagonist of Life is Strange with the most lines, but Chloe is the real beating heart of the game, and Ashly embodied that role perfectly.

Thank you for asking! For all my gripes with the production of the games, I've always adored the casts. No matter how polished the games get, they're niche enough to still have that indie feel to them, and the actors don't have that unapproachable celebrity veil over them. Watching their streams has always felt like watching a big supportive friend group than just a cast (with Katy Bentz as the ringleader, of course). I highly recommend checking out the group streams if you haven't already!

Neve!!! I love Neve the character. But I’m significantly less fond of Neve’s personal plot and Aelia is the big reason why. She feels massively underwritten in a “save Treviso” play-through and I really hope it will be different when I do Veil Jumping Neve-smoocher Khensalin’s play-through where I will be saving Minrathous

A lot of my problems with Aelia could be resolved by making her like 250% gayer for Neve

REVENANT DRAGON, MY BELOVED. now there was a fucking boss fight!!! i loved it, 10/10, no notes. Glad I saved Mythal and the Revenant Dragon for dead last (which was a character choice because my Rook de Riva wants to save Solas from himself but did NOT want to deal with Mythal. He has Dalish Religious Trauma from before he ran away from his clan-of-origin and a lot of it is about Mythal. I imagine Elías just gritting his teeth through his first two answers before finally snapping about how he and Bellara killed Anaris so he can get this conversation over with already)

(Elías also had the Dalish version of an Edgy Contrarian Teenage Satanist phase, by which I mean he decided that everyone else was wrong and What If Fen’harel Was Right, Actually. There was VERY little that Solas could have done to actually lose his new stan. Even with the betrayal, Elías is like “I mean, I would feel more wounded if he hadn’t betrayed me tbh, that would mean I wasn’t worth the effort in his eyes, but he put actual effort into this, which means I matter to him on some level and I’ll take it while also calling him a bitch and demanding to know what he was thinking with several of his life-choices. :D”

…………my next two Rooks are gonna have fun relationships with Solas, too. Messy ones, naturally, because Solas, but like, fun for me personally messy.)

Questions my Rook de Riva has 100% asked: “Why is the answer always ‘Taash needs to control their anger’ and never ‘Maybe people and Shathann especially should stop treating Taash like fucking garbage’?”

Like, as a player, I get that things are often more complicated but man, Shathann tripped SO many trauma wires for Elías and just made him want to disagree with everything she said on principle. Shathann could have said that you die if you stop breathing, and Elías would’ve told her that sounded like a skill issue because he once heard Mourn Watch apprentices can use their death magic to stay alive indefinitely even when they can’t breathe.

The narrative handling of Shathann, kind of a mixed bag for me, but Shathann as a character? I think she was great and I appreciated that her myriad shitty behaviors felt so viscerally real

Also, like………so, the Fourth Blight means Ghilan’nain is single, right? Like, Andruil’s dragon, Anorral, was the archdemon that time, and since Anorral died, Andruil turned mortal. It’s established explicitly that Elgar’nan and Ghilan’nain are the last of the Evanuris, meaning Andruil is dead, meaning Ghilan’nain is single, yes?? :3

Listen, as much as I was utterly devastated by the codex entry where she’s all “Fuck off Elgar’nan, stop accusing me of grieving and let me work, damn!!!” and the one where Elgar’nan is like “She thinks I can’t tell she misses Andruil, maybe I’ll let her do some horrific Blight experiments to Lusacan later, that should cheer her up”? I am NOT above comforting the widow when the widow is a mad magical-science lady with tentacles and yaoi hands who is the size of a fucking building

Maker forbid a massive, tentacled magical-science lady have hobbies!!!

Elgar’nan doesn’t do as much for me as Ghilan’nain. He’s a perfectly serviceable villain. The writing is decent and his VA did an amazing job. He is sufficiently creepy at Rook and I appreciate that. But he’s simply not a mad science yaoi hands tentacle lady who’s literally the size of a building

All this being said, the Razikale boss fight really did feel like a significantly scaled up version of trying to play pirates on a playground or something, and there’s one kid who just keeps being like “Well, MY pirate has invisible super armor on which means you can’t hurt him! And he has LASER EYES!!! I’ll pew-pew-pew you with my laser eyes if you don’t let me have them!!!”

Mechanically, it was a great boss fight. Aesthetically, I fucking love Razikale’s design and how totally fucked and Blighted she was. But on a character level, it did start to feel a little silly that Ghilan’nain just kept having screaming tantrums and adding more fucking heads (though in fairness, this wasn’t helped by the fact that I put Weisshaupt off as much as I possibly could and as such was probably way over-leveled for the Razikale fight)

anyway, Razikale is perfect and has done nothing wrong ever in her life

The Formless One was also great. Gonna pinch its widdle Formless cheeks. The all-caps hate mail it sends, chef’s kiss perfect

Really do not think I have it in me to choose Davrin to die over Harding literally ever. Narratively, it just feels wrong to me, when so much of Davrin’s story is about the fact that he has a genuine death wish underneath his Grey Warden heroism and about finding his reasons to want to live, while Harding probably would’ve spent the entire game beating herself up about not taking the shot on Solas in the prologue, if not for the lyrium dagger awakening lyrium magic in her somehow. Sacrificing herself while taking a shot that does interrupt a fucked up ancient elf magic ritual? Feels like a perfect narrative bookend for Harding’s story, while letting Davrin have the heroic death he wants so badly feels, to me, like letting him off easy instead of challenging him on his bullshit idea that living like you want to die is okay as long as you’re a Gray Warden

speaking of Gray Wardens: Antoine and Evka are great, love them

Part of me wants to know how much of my play-through time was spent on just getting lost because I didn’t notice the door or hallway I was actually supposed to be going down. Another part of me never wants to know this.

I had to do the final run on Isseya twice because despite getting the First Warden’s clue about the feather from Isseya’s griffon and picking up the codex entry that’s on the table beside said feather, I missed picking up the actual feather. At least her boss fight was fun

Unlike Aelia’s boss fight, which made me want to throw things because I did all that work on her minions and her warding crystals, and then I don’t even get to hit her with Chain Lightning??? Come on.

Mmmm, so much juicy lore, I’m chewing on it so much

Also letting the headcanon gremlins run amok with ideas about like, all the drama that may or may not have happened in ancient Elvhenan with the Evanuris and the Forgotten Ones

which reminds me: I REALLY APPRECIATED THE LORE IMPLICATIONS OF ANARIS BEING THERE. He himself was kinda middle of the road for me, but honestly, that was mostly a function of him being in Bellara’s plot. If he’d been in anyone else’s plot, I don’t think he would’ve ended somewhere in the middle of my Companion Personal Antagonist Rankings.

Which I agree isn’t really fair to either him or Bellara, especially since I don’t dislike her or anything? I think she’s cute! But she just doesn’t really do it for me personally. She’s cute and I have no issues with her but also don’t feel terribly invested in her because she’s not for me

SPOILERS: i have mixed feelings about the bear s3 but knowing that s3 & s4 were written/filmed at the same time makes sense. s4 will prob answer s3's q's. (A LOT was left open-ended) usually i love that, but it felt like the show lost itself in certain places, esp the self-indulgent finale. all stories are indulgent to some degree, but too much decadence rarely leaves room for substance.

and i get why they tried to do the chef's table thing, but other than andrea, syd, and luca, everyone else's acting was disjointed and trite. but i loved ep 1; it was an ethereal, artsy, meditative piece (peace) that was necessary after the chaotic s2 finale. however, as a big fan of the show, it was hard for me to finish the eps.

the standout in s3 FOR SURE was tina's ep - directed by ayo. glad we got her backstory. personally i liked her anxiety-inducing job hunt bc it's really like that irl, esp for older woc. the sobbing while eating a free sandwich was relatable, and the mikey convo was super impactful. but as much as i loved the ep, it still felt superficial compared to s2 'forks' (richie) or 'honeydew' (marcus). we never see her son again either; all we get is tina yelling at him to quiet down.

then there was marcus's mother's funeral which seemed like it was going to be more central to the plot than it was. i wish we got more. and claire is still one of the most underwritten characters EVER. nothing about her or the mis en scène really sells it that she's a doctor lol. and the scene with the faks trying to apologize on carmy's behalf was beyond cringe. i like matty matheson - i have his cookbook, but there was entirely too many faks in s3.

and let's be real: where was ebra & sweeps? ebra has such an interesting story that i'm HOPING we get to see in s4. sweeps too - he tried out for the chicago cubs! but on a positive note, i loved the chemistry between syd/luca. it was v sweet and organic. wonder if they'll be a thing in s4 since luca is carmy's foil. too bad marcus was barely in s3, tho the hug between him & luca at the party was cute. syd's meltdown mirroring carmy's in s2 was also a nice touch.

idk how to feel about sugar's labor scene. most praise it, but it didn't hit the same for me. donna's over-acting (the whole series) is really distracting and i can't take her seriously. ik she's supposed to be mentally unwell, but it borders on cartoonish. the hospital moment was heartwarming, but again, artificially. and pete was so underwritten too, just so they could have that mom moment. i liked the scene with him and syd tho. it felt authentically awkward.

i also understand what they were trying to do with the finale, but it was a flop for me. the scene with andrea/carmy staring out into the chicago night was introspective and beautiful, but the msg doesn't hit all the way bc we have a group of wealthy celeb chefs saying it's okay to stop while you're ahead and enjoy life while you can. every second counts. unfortunately for those who are not celeb chefs, it's not that easy to simply "enjoy life."

on one hand, i agree that food is life and restaurants have been community "third places" forever (essential to life itself; historically, like when revolutionaries would gather at pubs or cafes). however, do i think that fine dining and the "art" that comes with it is necessary? no. if there were more spots like the original beef/bear in the world tho, that would be a good thing.
