PERCY JACKSON AU GO! Ok so this takes place post PJO and during HOO but as I haven't started it TAO aren't cannon to this au .... yet . This au is will be kinda just a collection of story with very little things relating to the plot of HOO. The reason there are a lot more Big Three God kids than one might expect is I can't think of anyone better to make these people their godly parent(and hey now the cannon big three kids won't be as lonely ) . Thoughts about Heroes of Olympus and how it could have been better.
Sometimes I think about what would have made HOO a better series. And I'm not talking about the obvious 'too much focus on romantic relationships' and the lack of usage of certain characters or the dumb ending.
I mean the little things that would change so much (mainly character dynamics but also worldbuilding i.e. Camp Jupiter and Gaia's reasoning)
Some of the points are inspired by @crisisreading and their posts. They are the first I saw raise some of my own points so! part 2
Make the ages vary more in the main cast, trust me
Let Percy, Annabeth and Grover get older by 4-5 years. Let them become adults and find themselves outside the godly war. Let them even finish college, I wouldn't get mad. Let them do anything beside being teenagers.
I promise this would make the dynamics more interesting. Percy and Annabeth will be more mentor figures, than fellow comrades. This would create some distance between some of the them, but ultimately create something fun. Piper would come to see some aspiring female figure in Annabeth (I think this would ether be positive or negative, depending how Annabeth changed as a character over the years, but I tend towards negative). Leo would potentially have someone older to exchange ideas with. Jason would possibly feel intimidated by Percy's vastly superior age, prowess and experience, instead of being able to clash heads with him.
Hazel would have not one, but two that people that would play parent to the others' reckless behavior. (go snort your harmful stereotypes up your ass, Riordan.) Frank, when telling Percy and Hazel about his stick, would possibly find in Percy a kind hand (not that he wasn't kind already, let me explain) and Percy would probably share with him this feeling of vulnerability - not dump it on Frank - about having your life tied to a specific thing. I mean his Achilles heel, with which he would have lived for far longer.
And a whole lot more.
2. Add Grover into the series as a perspective character
You have a new trio dynamic introduced in the first book of the series. Let the original trio interact as main characters and let us see how their relationship has changed.
Grover's opinion on the conflict between the gods and Gaia would be important. He is the Lord of the Wild, and Gaia is the literal personification of the Earth. Let us see his struggle between the loyalty he has to the gods and his friends and his powerful feelings towards protecting nature.
Also, he would act as a protector for the demigods. Because while I enjoy Hedge, he is not enough to keep them safe.
3. Throw the bullshit about Gaia getting revenge for Kronos' defeat out of the way
Gaia, as mentioned before, if the personification of the Earth. One of the first gods to emerge from Chaos.
Gaia can, of course, keep her resentment for the gods defeating the son that freed her from her pain (caused by Ouranos initially). But she is a mother goddess. She should want obliterate humanity because humans are slowly killing her. Painfully. She wants to survive and the only way she sees how if by killing all the humans. She wants to save her children, aka animals, insects, nature, and the only way she sees is bloodshed. Gods are not rational in their anger, no one is. So let her be angry and vengeful and out for human blood.
DO NOT MAKE HER A FUCKING VILLAIN, MAN! Make her an antagonist, but someone's whose ideals are worth taking in and adapting. Kinda like Luke about the demigod and minor god recognition. Where have the themes of the original series gone? Remember, an important theme in BOTL was protecting the environment. It was one of the most important moments when Pan faded. Do not let that go to fucking waste. Especially not now, in the world we live in.
4. Show the effects the war had on Camp Half-Blood. Hint it at Camp Jupiter, when Percy does not have the memories to corelate it with
We've had years since the end of the Second Titan War. How did the gods change the course of events ? (the victors write the histories) How much of Luke's reasoning for starting the war was erased. (hint, all of it.) Show us how much the perspectives were shifted and how much the people that fought in it were made into martyrs and villain, basically becoming caricatures.
Let us feel how much this hurts Percy, Grover and Annabeth. How it had impacted and impacts their trauma, grief and utter horror. The younger, newer campers see them as wonderful, all-just and loyal heroes of the gods. The way they hate it.
Good moment to implement the new cabins for the gods and let the new ones forget that it wasn't always this way. Let Percy's demand to the gods be forgotten, shoved under the rug. The tragedy unfolds, use it.
Since in Camp Jupiter none of the main characters have fought, let us see the subtility. Let the older legionnaires be ragged, scarred. Older and weary, with eyes glassy and suspicious. Have younger recruits have this heavy air around them. They know what happened, what killed most of the older people in the legion.
Have Jason, Hazel and Frank see these things in Annabeth, Grover and Percy too. They realise that oh. oh. these three have fought in the war, of course they would. Show them gain respect for the trio. The same kind of respect they have for the veterans back home.
5. Cut one of the Seven from the prophecy.
I know this seems radical, but it is a symbolism thing, which I think would be more interesting in a world based on Greek mythology.
It is established in PJO that three (3) is an important number: 3 Olympian sisters (Hera, Demeter, Hestia), 3 Olympian brothers (Hades, Poseidon, Zeus), 3 Fates, 3 quest members, 3 Furies, 3 godly realms (the Underworld, Olympus + the sky, the seas). Use this.
Give us six (6) prophesized heroes. It is, after all, the second most used number in the series and a multiple of 3.
I suggest Annabeth. Why? because she has her quest from Athena. Let that be her top priority, while hanging out on the Argo II to get to Rome. Let her bond with the younger demigods and have her possible death be always on her mind. Bring her hubris into play and she would think herself the chosen one, the one demigod child of Athena to survive. This would make her falling into Tartarus with Percy not letting her go more taxing on her psyche.
Show us how she hates herself because she took one of the principal quest members to certain death. She feels like she'd jeopardized the whole saving the world thing.
Cut the Seven to Six and let Annabeth die in Tartarus. Show us why a single-man quest is a death sentence. Why three (3) is such a valuable number.
6. CONSEQUENCES!!!
Jumping straight off the last point.
Change why Annabeth would end up in Tartarus. Make her ignore the string around her ankle because she thing that nothing bad can happen to her now. After all, Arachne is gone, right.
Let this be her undoing. I do not care how she dies, but make her choices, her hubris, be her undoing. Do not let her death up to a chance, a mistake or miscalculation. Show how toxic Tartarus is, because we do not see it enough, but make it Annabeth's idea, the plan by which she dies.
Do not make it Percy's fault. Let him try to do everything to keep her alive, but still failing. Attack his sense of loyalty, his self-esteem. Show how the experiences and her death affect him.
Bring the trauma from the last war back in those chapters, in a place where demigods leave something behind.
To less drastic things - let the others get hurt. Permanently. Show how this life affects and damages people physically, too.
Have one lose an eye, another get horrific scars. Lose a limb, a part of themselves. Do not make it seem like any other could have gotten the same wound.
Tailor them to their character, their pride and their skill. Hit them where it hurts most and let us see how it changes them.
Also, about Leo. Kill him too. The fact that he ended up alive is a deux ex machina. He should have suffered the consequences.
Also also, bring back the fatal flaws. They are missing from the series. Play with them, show why they are important parts of their characters. Bring back ancient Greek fatal flaws, and new ones that make sense in a modern world.
Hurt them because what hurts them is part of who they are. Show us why the Greeks invented tragedy.
7. Age up the target age. Go more young/new adult
I understand that PJO was made for middle schoolers. But the target audience had grown up alongside the characters, and as such they have matured.
This is why I said to age Percy, Grover and Annabeth up further. Leave some distance for the old and new readers to get up and personal with the new main characters. Have them find common ground with the new demigods but have their anchor in the old ones.
Make the readers work to understand and refamiliarize themselves wit the older demigods. Because they've changed.
Targeting a more mature audience allows exploring n. 6. The realistic consequences of living with the fear that something will come and eat you. How just a little mishap could change you for life. (or what has been left of it)
Please do not go grim dark. Show that despite this all, their purpose has not stopped existing. A life exists outside of your appearance or disability still exist, and while it would be hard, do not lose hope.
8. Hope, or lack of its importance in the Heroes of Olympus series
Alongside other callbacks and reinforcements of PJO's lore, where is Elpis (hope)? Why doesn't she appear as a larger theme in the books? I don't know.
Elpis is still in the jar, having been used as a threat of defeat. But now Kronos is gone. Have Gaia use it as s symbol for her own cause.
Make hope Gaia's argument. The most important part of why her cause stands. Gaia is waking now because there is no hope for the betterment of the planet while in human - and therefore godly - grasp. She wants to save the planet, but they, the destroyers, are opposing her.
Hope is what she wants to bring back. The hope that death will not be the end of life, but further evolvement and betterment of all species.
This argument is what the counterargument should unravel. All species? Why are humans considered irredeemable, unworthy of becoming something greater?
Why can't they not coexist and why can't humans learn how to care about the world surrounding them.
Make hope for humanity and for the environment not a question of if they are capable to coexist, but how we can manage that. Humanity and nature are not mutually exclusive, but two halves of the same whole that need each other to sustain their longevity. Yes, nature can exist without humans, but humans can't.
This does not mean that the best way forward is to kill all humans.
There is no need for hope in HOO because there are no greater questions being asked about topics that require hope, because otherwise we would descend into nihilism and fatalism.
9. Give the gods reason to act the way they act, or a look at a greater narrative problem in the series
I may be generalizing, but the gods act erratically and make choices convenient for the plot, as it is, to happen.
Hera: how, specifically, does she know that Gaia is rising and what her plans are. Why is she against Gaia, when the older goddess has a track record of helping the Olympians on different occasions in the myths. Why does she decide to act when she does, how she knows that the king of the giants (whatever his name may be) is coming after her right then.
We don't know.
Athena: we understand why she wants the Athena Parthenos back. Why not force the Romans to give it back. After all, she is a goddess, even if the Romans don't respect her as the Greeks did, she has power and sway over them. Why send her children, a supposedly important part of what brings her glory, to a near-certain death. Is it misguided vengeance, an obsession to get the statue back at all cost, or simple cruelty. These reasons could apply very well to sending the Romans, yet she doesn't.
Zeus: why lock down Olympus? Paranoia, which fair, but you are a King, why wouldn't you look after your subjects? (bc Riordan chose to ignore part of his characterization in the myths and part of his godly domain) (I know kings aren't perfect, but after the last war, one would think he would do everything in his power to stop another one before it begins) Why not seek justice for Octavian's lies, that affect their ability to win the war, and kill/imprison him? Justice is part of his domain, as Zeus Nomius.
I know that we wouldn't necessarily need these answers, but without some of them, some choices left hanging seem to be there only to add to the drama and danger of it all.
All in all, I have many problems with the 'Heroes of Olympus' series. Some of them are nitpicks and personal preference as a high fantasy reader in my free time. Some of them would really add to the story and continue the themes of PJO.

pjo episode four parts that made me scream
Them starting with sally trying teach percy how to swim and percy being scared is fantastic for two reasons: number one, its a normal kid thing and number two it ties into later in the books when we find out percy has a fear of drowning. Its like hoe thalia has a fear of heights and kind of ties into the idea that forbidden children are often afraid of some part of their parents element. I love that theyre bringing in elements of that idea so early!!!
percy’s “can i ask a stupid question” and annabeths “are you trying to make me make fun of you” akdbdkbaaksbdkjsbakks shes so funny
I LOVE THAT THEY BRING UP PAN AND SPECIFICALLY TIE HIM TO MANIFEST DESTINY AND AMERICAS HISTORY OF KILLING ITS INDIGENOUS PEOPLE!!!! ITS IMPORTANT FUCKING HISTORY AND IM SO GLAD THE SHOW ACKNOWLEDGED IT
percy and annabeths little banter, percys stupid accent and then him collapsing on her. That and the scene where theyre talking on the train is the percabeth we deserve!!!!!! God i love them so much
ALSO going back to the scene where theyre talking in bed on the train i love how annabeth knows that grovers grumpy in the morning and percy doesnt. Grover was her protector once too!! (Like they said last episode) and theyve traveled together before!! He was annabeths friend before he was percys
ok everyones already said this but the parallels between annabeth and medusa?!!??? With medusa saying “i was you” last episode and now annabeth getting punished for something percy did ghe same was medusa was punished for something Poseidon did????? Absolutely insane i love it
also the fact that it hurt athenas pride specifically, much like how medusa mentioned the “pride of athena” in reference to annabeth last episode, which all ties back to the fact that hubris is annabeths fatal flaw and she gets it from her mother
THE CUT TO PERCY IN THE FOUNTAIN AND THEM SPLASHING WATER ON HIM AHSKSBJAHAJSJSB theyre so funny for that
Percy just looks like a wet rag this episode and its so well done you can even tell the makeup on his face was done to make him appear paler and sicklier and it works so well
ok PERCY PULLING ANNABETH INTO THE STAIRWELL AND SHUTTING THE DOOR???? Because hes loyal to a fault!!!! And theyre becoming friends!!!!!!!!! And he cares about her more in like a week than athena ever has and its shown to us so clearly in this episode!!!!!!
ONCE AGAIN LUKES MOTIVATIONS ARE GOING TO MAKE SO MUCH SENSE BY THE TIME WE GET TO THE END OF THIS AND WE DONT EVEN HAVE TO SPEND TIME WITH HIM TO UNDERSTAND THEM god this series is so well done

AND WE FINALLY GET AN ANSWER AS TO HOW PERCY GOT IN THE RIVER FROM THE TOP OF THE ARCH!! (At least in the tv world, in the book world the arch might very well just be in a different spot lol)

god the episode ending with percy breathing underwater is so good i was on the edge of my seat until the very end
OK LAST THING is that they are continuing the theme sally brings up about monsters not always looking like monsters and heroes not always looking like heroes so well!!! Echidna bringing it up and saying that to her, demigods are more dangerous was fantastic i love how dedicated they are to this
OK ACTUALLY THE LAST THING i love the dichotomy of different mothers in this episode. We start with sally and percy and immediately see how much they love each other and care about each other!!!! Then we get to echidna who cares about her children too by teaching them to hunt!!! And then we get athena who ducking punishes annabeth for something she didnt even do. And its like. That was a little monstrous athena. Im understanding why someone might want to kill their godly parent

Luke Castellan X Child of Iris! G/N Reader
A/N This is my first Drabble for Luke lmk if you have any cool ideas or thoughts to include in my next one :) also let’s pretend that the minor Gods had cabins back in the early PJO timeline (before Percy). 
This was also not proofread...

You had been in camp for a total of 3 weeks already, and you were claimed the second you stepped foot onto camp grounds. A glorious rainbow shone over you head and you felt this unmeasurable glow of happiness within you. You had journeyed so far from your home, leaving behind your father and younger siblings to go to camp, to protect them from harm. And although you had been so anxious and worried you couldn’t help but feel excited for finally finding a place that could answer all of the questions and suspicions you’d had since you were a child. Your face practically glowed as you were claimed by your godly parent, Iris. You were met with the applause of nearby campers who had witnessed the bright glow of colors floating overhead. 
Camp so far had been a blur of excitement and curiosity, you were soon caught up to speed by fellow children of Iris, your half-siblings. They introduced you to the many camp activities and rituals. While it was a lot to adjust to, you soon fit right in and made as many friends as possible. 
Your cabin was the epitome of sunshine and rainbows… in the best way I promise. There were sun catchers hung up all around the interior nearby windows, light woods and pastel colored materials were used all throughout your cabin and bunks. And the walls of your cabin were littered with paintings and canvases hung up to display the artwork and passions of you and your siblings. The few spaces of bare wall left, and even the ceilings and floors, were covered with either small paintings or dried splatters of paint. (Think of the inside of Rapunzel’s tower in the movie). 
You awoke on a warm summer’s morning to the sound of incessant pounding on your cabin door. While children of Iris are always pictured to be bright happy people, you were quite the opposite in the early mornings, especially if someone woke you up. You grumble as you slowly climb out of your bunk and walk towards the door. “Whoever you are, you better have a pretty good reason to wake me up.” You open the door in annoyance only to be met with Luke Castellan’s grinning face. “Morning Sunshine.” As he invites himself inside the cabin, you roll your eyes at his impromptu visit. Luke was one of the first campers to befriend you a few weeks back and ever since then he never seemed to leave your side. You didn’t really mind since he was kind to you had begun to harbor a small crush (not small at all) on him. However, you DID mind it now that he woke you up from your sleep. 
“Luke, don’t get me wrong I love hanging out with you, but why are you here so early?” You cross over to your bunk, starting to get ready for the day since it was obvious you weren’t going to go to sleep anytime soon. Luke turns to you with an amused look, “You forgot didn’t you.”, you look over at him contemplating what you could have forgotten. “What do you mean… OH training was this morning!!” You exclaim as you hurriedly grab the brush and begin to brush your hair and run into the bathroom with your camp t shirt and a pair of shorts you had laid out, slamming the door shut. Luke’s smile only grows wider as he watches your crazed antics about being late to training. He chuckles as you run out the bathroom with toothbrush in mouth, hopping on foot to slid on your socks and shoes. “mrMPH. mmmrfelM” you try to say as your toothbrush is hanging out of your mouth. Luke just shakes his head smiling to himself “Maybe finish brushing your teeth first, there’s no rush since the training ring’s emptier this morning because of the volleyball game between Cabins 5 and 7”. You rush into the bathroom again to finish brushing your teeth before emerging with a shining smile that practically melted Luke’s heart. 
“Okay, I’m ready. Let’s go.” you grab his hand running out of the cabin, your regular energy and optimism shone through once again. Luke laughed aloud and held your hand tighter as you both bounded over the hills and trails toward the training arena. You were so elated you almost missed the giant rainbow painting the clear blue sky. Despite being woken up, you were still going to have the best day.

Greek Fire (Ethabaster)
Not an AU. Al saves Ethan from the explosion of the Andromeda and they get to know each other better. TW for mentions of violence, alcohol, abuse, homophobia, and conversion therapy.
Ethan stared in shock at the ticking detonation timer on Charles Beckendorf's watch. He gulped. He'd messed up. The son of Hephaestus had tricked them. He'd already planted the bomb. Kronos was going to be furious with him- that was, if he even survived the imminent explosion. He was dead either way.
10... 9... 8... 7... 6... 5... 4... 3... 2... 1. The sudden explosion blasted Ethan backward, knocking him off his feet. He could feel the wave of heat washing toward him, and he closed his eye tight, ready to die. When asked about the moment later on, he would have said his life flashed before his eyes, but that wasn't at all what happened, and it was stupid and cliche anyway. However, he did think briefly about the house of death. He imagined waking up in the Underworld and standing before the judges. Where would they choose to send him?  He personally saw himself as an Asphodel kind of person- average, unexceptional, a balance of good and evil that didn't really slot into either group. He certainly wouldn't call himself a hero, but he didn't think he'd done anything worthy of eternal punishment either.
Then, just as he was certain he was dead, he felt someone grab him by the waist, and the heat of the blast was gone. He guessed Thanatos had come to take him, but when he dared to open his eye and look up, it was Alabaster. The son of Hecate's body was pulsing with glowing green runes, and he seemed to have conjured a thick forcefield around himself and Ethan, protecting them both from the explosion.
"Al-" was all he had to say before they plummeted into the ocean.

Ethan pulled himself and Alabaster up onto the warm sand of the beach, coughing up salt water. Unfortunately, Al's forcefield had shattered the second they hit the water, and being underwater and drained of energy, he'd been unable to reconstruct it, so Ethan had had to swim to shore carrying the son of Hecate.
"Help," he coughed, scanning around for a lifeguard. His eyepatch had somehow come off in the ocean, and he was glad that the eyelid where his missing eye used to be was scarred and swollen shut, because he didn't want to get salt water in his empty eye socket. Anyway, he wasn't even sure where they were. He sighed and rolled his companion onto his back. "Al, wake up," he croaked. The son of Hecate was out cold, and his lips were tinged slightly blue. Ethan groaned. "Oh, please do not need CPR."
That was when a young female lifeguard jogged over. She was around Ethan's age, seventeen or eighteen, with tanned skin and pixie-cut caramel hair.
"What's wrong?" she asked, kneeling down in the sand beside her.
"It's my... brother," Ethan said. He wasn't quite sure where that had come from. The idea of Al as his brother felt outrageous. They looked nothing alike, for one. Not to mention Ethan had thought before that he might possibly like the son of Hecate as something more than a friend. Not that he hadn't also wished before he had the same godly parent. Not in a weird way, it was just that he sometimes envied the kind of relationship Al and his other siblings, had with Hecate. He'd only met Nemesis, his own mother, once, and that interaction had ended with her taking his left eye. After that, he felt like she hadn't given him a second thought.
"You don't look like brothers," the lifeguard said, articulating just a tiny piece of Ethan's whole inner monologue. He hated that he did that, but he blamed it on his anxiety.
"We're both adopted," Ethan lied, curling his lip a little. He'd never liked lying, and when he was younger, he couldn't have done it to save his life. That was what had landed him in macho wilderness surviving training camp after his dad found out he liked guys. He sighed. There were things he missed about Seattle, but his shitty dad wasn't one of them.
"Oookay," the girl nodded, scrutinizing the two boys. "Are you here with your parents?" Ethan shook his head.
"No, they're shopping in town. Can you help him?" She nodded.
"I suppose I could try CPR."
For some reason, Ethan couldn't watch, but the lifeguard was a miracle worker. In a few minutes, Al was up and his coloration had returned to normal. The lifeguard offered to find someone to take them to their parents, but Ethan insisted that they were fine, they just needed directions to the nearest town.
The nearest town happened to be Chesapeake, Virginia. Luckily, along with a few soggy drachma he figured he'd use to IM Kronos later to find out the rendezvous point for the remnant of the army, Ethan had a little bit of mortal money on them that he was able to use to hail a taxi into Chesapeake, where they found a small cafe to sit and talk.
"Thanks for saving me," Ethan said as they sat in a booth, looking over the cafe's menu. "I owe you one."
"Nah, it's fine," Al said, waving his hand dismissively.
"No, I mean it. I'm going to pay you back for this. I'm a son of the goddess of balance. I have to."
"All right, if you insist," Al chuckled. Ethan sighed and looked around the cafe. Chesapeake was an affluent community, so a lot of rich people were coming into the cafe, and he didn't like the looks they were giving him. He reached up and touched the side of his face. He'd been wearing it regularly for so long that he hadn't realized how self-conscious he felt without his eyepatch. "Hey, are you okay?" Al asked, seemingly picking up on his discomfort. Ethan bit his lip.
"Fine. I'm just a little awkward, not having my eyepatch."
"Oh, okay." Al slipped a stack of somehow completely-dry notecards and a green Sharpie out of his jeans pocket. He placed one of the cards on the tables and made a quick sketch on it. Then he tapped the card with two fingers and a black felt eyepatch just like Ethan's old one- the one he'd been wearing since he was thirteen years old- appeared out of thin air. "Here." He handed it to him. Ethan gaped.
"Should you have done that? Aren't you still super drained from that forcefield spell?" Al shrugged.
"Mistforms are easy magic. And I was doing a favor for a friend. Now take the damn patch, Pirate." Ethan sighed and put it on.
"What did I say about calling me that?"
"Aww, but it's so funny!"
"Not when you're on the receiving end."
"Fiiine," Al said. "What if you come up with a nickname for me?"
"It's no fun if you're in on it!" Ethan chuckled and put down the menu. "I think I'm gonna go order. I'm getting a plain black coffee, you?"
"Earl Grey tea for me," Al said.
"Got it," Ethan said. He walked up to the counter and ordered. A few minutes later, he came back with their drinks.
"Ooh, they have fancy cups," Al said, taking his. Ethan nodded and sat down.
"Hey, by the way, we've been working together for about a year now, and I'd say we're friends, but we really don't know all that much about each other. Where are you from?" Alabaster hesitated.
"London," he said quietly, stirring his tea.
"Really?" Ethan asked in vague disbelief. "I would never have thought you were British."
"Yeah..." Al said, a hint of an English accent showing through on this word. "I didn't want to stand out when I came to camp, so I made myself unlearn my accent."
"That sucks," Ethan said. "What made you leave home?" Al held up a hand.
"Woah, Mister. First you have to tell me where you're from." Ethan grinned.
"Touché. Well, I'm from Seattle, but my dad emigrated from Japan. I would always spend summers with my grandparents in Kyoto. That is, until they both passed away when I was ten."
"I'm sorry," Al said. "Did you like them?"
"Yeah," Ethan said. "My dad, not so much." Al bit his lip.
"That's something we have in common. My dad is why I left home." Ethan nodded.
"Tell me about him. That is, if it's not too sensitive of a topic." Al nodded.
"It's not. I mean it's not great, but I'm alright talking about him if that's what you mean. Anyway, my dad came from a Wiccan family, he was a practicing witch. That's what drew Hecate to him. Only, as he got older, he started losing belief. He became a businessman. He still practiced, but it wasn't as big a part of his life." Ethan nodded
"And?" Al sighed, like he was gearing up to tell a big secret.
"I was born a girl," he said. "My dad thought he had three daughters. Two of them were with his long term girlfriend. I was the odd one out. I came out when I was pretty young- I mean, I always knew I was a guy and all- and I don't think he quite knew what to make of it. He wasn't unaccepting by any means. In fact, he was probably the opposite. He immediately started using my name and pronouns, but because I was the only boy, he started putting all this pressure on me to be his perfect son. And when I didn't live up to his expectations, he got upset."
"Lucky," Ethan said. "I mean, not that last part, but at least he accepted you for being trans. You should here what my dad did when he found out I might be gay."
"Tell me more about him." Al folded his hands. He was completely talking in his natural accent now, and Ethan hated how attractive he found that.
"Okay, let's see," he said. "Well, he was a lawyer. Justice and all- I guess that's why Nemesis liked him. Well, as much as she can like anyone. She just kind of showed up with me one day, so I gather my dad didn't really even want me in the first place. When I was really young, he got married, so I grew up with a stepmother. I didn't hate her, but we weren't particularly close. She was just kind of there, honestly."
"That's the same way I always felt about my dad's girlfriend," Al said. "But to her credit, she was always nice to me." Ethan nodded.
"Anyway, everything went to Hades when I was about six. My dad's law firm went broke and he started drinking. He became verbally abusive towards me, but he was worse towards Keiko. I may not have loved her, but I felt really bad for her."
"Yikes," Al said. "You said something about your dad finding out you like guys?"
"Um, yeah," Ethan said, taking a sip of his coffee. "Funny story, as a kid I was an awful liar. When I was about ten, I think, I was starting to come to terms with the fact that I was pretty sure I liked boys, and I was writing about it in the little diary I kept one day when my dad came up to me and asked what I was writing about. Long story, he made me do a lot of tough manual work and survival training as basically his version of conversion therapy. He thought doing manly stuff would turn me straight."
"Yikes," Alabaster said, his green eyes wide. "What was the final straw?"
"You first," Ethan said. Al sighed.
"Due to some learning difficulties and stuff, I didn't do the best in school, which meant my perfectionist dad was always on my back about my report cards and shit. The last straw was when I was in sixth grade. We'd moved to Maine a couple years ago, so I was going to an American school. I got an F in maths, and my dad went crazy, threatened to kick me out. I was so done, I high-tailed it out of there on my own. Eventually my mom sent a satyr my way and I ended up at that camp. Your turn."
"Right," Ethan said. "Well, one time when I was eleven, my dad and Keiko, his wife, got into a really big fight. He beat her so hard she died. I tried to get in between them and he got me so bad I ended up in the hospital. At that point... well, even though I've only met Nemesis once, she used to speak in my head about injustice and retribution even before I knew I was a demigod. She told me I had to make my father pay." He gritted his teeth and drew in a sharp breath.
"You killed him," Al correctly deduced. Ethan sighed.
"Yeah. It wasn't easy, but I agree with Nemesis that it had to be done. Justice needed to be served. But I promised myself I'd never do something like that again, unless I was absolutely sure the person deserved it."
"Damn," Al said, whistling. "Did you get caught?"
"Unfortunately, yes," he said. "They decided to keep me in a juvenile detention facility until they got me a trial. That's where my satyr found me."
"Wow," Al said. "Okay, you win for craziest backstory." Ethan smiled.
"I wasn't aware it was a competition."
The two of them just sat there a while longer, laughing and talking until they had finished their drinks.
"Okay," Al said. "We should probably find out the rendezvous point and go there. But this was nice."
"Yeah," Ethan said. "It was."

(Poe Dameron x Reader): Last Night
Summary: (Y/N) Solo is new to the D’Qar base and meets a certain pilot.
A/N: This is an idea I’d been toying with for a while, the introduction is way too long but I couldn’t bear to cut any of it because I’m kind of obsessed with Solo!Reader now lol (apologies for any spelling or grammar mistakes)

To say you were upset would be the understatement of the universe. You were furious. After years of training and countless successful missions, your mother had decided to abruptly transfer you back to her base, on D’Qar. 
You’d grown up traveling around the galaxy thanks to your parents. But your mother had sent you to a resistance base in the outer rim, on Dantar when you were a teenager so you could train as a pilot, far out of the reach of your brother and the rest of the First Order.
But now your mother wanted you back with her, on D’Qar, so you could help her. After what? Six? Seven years of seeing your mom only once or twice a year when she came to meet with the vice admiral who ran the base where you were stationed. Seven years of her refusing to meet your eyes all because your brother had betrayed everything your family stood for. She had been punishing you for what he had done, whether she was willing to admit it or not. 
She wanted you back. And Leia Organa was the general. So you had no choice to follow her orders. 
Lucky for you, one of your close friends was also being transferred with you. Rose had been filing for a transfer to D’Qar for years so she could be on the same base as her sister, and you’d told your mother that if she wanted you on the transport that there needed to be a spot for your best friend too. 
That was why both you and Rose were currently being pulled along at the wrist by Rose’s sister, Paige, as she told you all about how the cantina near the base had the best band on the planet — and how she couldn’t wait to introduce you to some of the other pilots.
Your trio strolled up to the bar where you each ordered drinks before a group of people seated at a booth in the corner of the cantina started calling Paige over to them.
“Hey, guys!” Paige said cheerfully as she hugged most of the members of the group, “This is my sister, Rose, that I’ve been telling you about, and of course-
“-(Y/N/N),” You say, cutting Paige off before she can tell them your full name. If there was one thing you knew for sure it was that no one likes to party with the General’s daughter, at least not before they get to know you. Withholding your full name for the time being seemed like the best move, especially since you were looking to have a properly wild night, which was much easier when people didn’t know who you were.
Everyone introduced themselves to you and Rose and you sat down with them. Paige and her friends took turns telling embarrassing stories about each other while you and Rose played the role of the attentive listeners.
As the night wore on, and you had lost count of how many drinks you’d had, people began to get up to go dance. And you were all but ready to turn in for the night when you heard laughing and cheers from a few members of the group who were dancing nearby. You turned towards the commotion to see what could only be described as quite possibly the most beautiful man you’d ever seen. 
Eventually, after the man had made his greetings to the people who were out on the dance floor he came over to the table and hugged Paige.
“I don’t think I’ve seen you around,” The man said as his eyes finally landed on you.
“I just got transferred to this base,” you shouted over the music, “my friends call me (Y/N/N),” You tell him as you stuck your hand. 
“Poe Dameron,” He introduces himself as he envelopes your hand in his own. 
“Oh, I know who you are,” You say with a slight chuckle. Commander Dameron was infamous, you’d heard of him, even on Dantar. 
“Best pilot in the resistance,” He quips with a smirk. 
You coughed slightly on the drink you’d just taken a sip of. Was this guy seriously so pompous that he would compliment himself? Now you understood all of the rumors, with a face and attitude like that, you were sure that Poe could get anyone in the resistance he wanted.
You cleared your throat before turning back to Poe, “You know, someone once told me that (Y/N) Solo was the best pilot in the resistance.”
“General Organa’s daughter? Pfft, please, she’s just some kid,” He told you with a smug grin, “Just because she’s the General’s daughter and her dad’s Han Solo doesn’t mean she actually knows anything about flying a proper ship.”
Out of the corner of your eye you saw Rose and Paige silently watching your conversation, and the warning look that Rose was giving you. But you didn’t care, you were going to get him back for that comment somehow.
“Do you wanna dance?” You asked as you placed your hand on his forearm.
He nodded with a warm smile before taking your hand in his and leading him towards the thumping music. 
As you danced with Poe you slowly began to relax. Maybe this transfer wouldn’t be so bad after all. You let yourself forget everything, the war, your family, all of the expectations that your mother had for you. You forgot them all as you snaked your arms around Poe’s neck and pulled him close to you. 
You began to move in sync with one another. His eyes locked in on your own as you inched closer and closer together. Eventually, you couldn’t bear the tension anymore and you kissed him. 
You pressed your lips against his as you pushed your fingers up into his thick curls. You pulled slightly, causing him to groan into your mouth. You smirked against his mouth as your tongues tangled together. 
Your head spins, and you’re not sure if it's from all the drinking, or the way Poe’s soft lips begin to trail down to the crook of your neck and suck on that sweet spot.
“We should-” Poe mutters against your skin, but you’re already a step ahead of him as you grab his hand from its place on the small of your back and lead him off the dance floor.
You winked at Rose as you tugged Poe by the hand out of the Cantina. You were heading towards your new quarters but Poe seemed to have other intentions because before you were even two steps out the door he had you pushed up against the wall of the building as he feverishly pressed his lips against yours. His breath was hot on your face, his entire body was pressed against yours, only your shins were left to face the biting chill that the night had to offer you.
Eventually, the two managed to break apart.
“Now do you wanna go back to my quarters?” You asked, slightly breathlessly, as you looked up at the dark-haired man.
“Lead the way,” He said with a wolfish grin as you grabbed his hand once again and headed back towards the base.
It took you far longer to get back to your room than it had taken to go to the cantina at the beginning of the night. Mostly because every once and a while Poe had decided it had been far too long since he’d kissed you and the would pull you back into him, distracting you for a moment (or several moments).
Finally, you made it to your room, you were giggling as you finally stumbled through the doorway with Poe’s lips still attached to your neck.
“Woah, how’d you get a room this nice?” He said as he finally looked around.
“Oh, didn’t you know? I’m actually very important,” You tell him with a wry smile as you sit down on the untouched, completely made bed, “Do you want to help me break it in?” You ask as you nod down at the mattress beneath you.
“I’d love nothing more.” 
His hands are on you before you can register it. His fingers are pulling at your shirt as he pulls the fabric over your head. You get to work on his belt as he pulls at your bra and palms your breasts. 
Poe’s eyes bore into your own as you shrug his jacket off his shoulders and he helps you make quick work of his shirt. You don’t say anything as he tugs your pants down your legs and lets them pool at your ankles.

Poe woke up the next morning, in your bed, only to find you long gone, he suspected that you’d had to be up early to start your first day on the job. 
He quickly pulled on his discarded clothes and made his way to his own quarters where he quickly changed into fresh clothes before making his way to the command center for his meeting with General Organa, a meeting he was already running late for.
“Commander Dameron, I want to introduce you to my daughter, (Y/N),” Leia said as she beckoned the pilot over. Poe made his way over to the General but the last thing he was prepared for was for you to turn around and smile at him.
The look on his face was priceless, you wish you had a holo of that moment so you could treasure it forever.
“Do you two know each other?” Leia asked after a beat as she took in both of your expressions.
“We met last night,” You tell your mother innocently, “At the cantina, Rose’s sister took us so she could introduce us to her friends.”.
Smoothing over the awkwardness quickly you turn back to Poe and stick out your hand, “It’s nice to officially meet you, Commander Dameron, I hear we’ll be working together quite closely,”
This was going to be fun.

Bianca was born on the 26th March. Needless to say that having an infant whilst being a parent for the first time was bad enough already.
Will and Nico were juggling between working at the hospital, writing a dissertation and taking care of their baby daughter which meant that they kind of forgot to call their godly parents to meet her.
It was the middle of the night when Bianca started wailing from her crib in the room next to theirs. Will groaned and turned to Nico who was still sleeping. “Nico, she’s up.”
Nico didn’t even open his eyes. “What time is it?” He turned and pressed the power button of his phone. 2:30 am. “I changed her diaper less than hour ago.”
Then the cry stopped. “Wait. She stopped crying?” Will got out of bed. “Someone else calmed her down.”
Nico was still a little confused and half-asleep. “Yes, a stranger broke into our house and soothed our crying baby. She probably just felt back asleep.”
Will stared at him in disbelief. He was pretty positive that Bianca wasn’t the kind of baby who would cry herself back to sleep, it hadn’t even been that long since she had started crying. “I am going to check on her.” He opened the door of the nursery. “Oh my Gods.” He shouted in horror as he saw his godly parent in the middle of the nursery.
Nico ran inside the room as soon as he heard to Will from the other room. “Apollo? What are you doing here?”
Yes, Apollo was holding Bianca in his arms who was somehow still sleeping despite the loud noises. “She was crying. What did you expected me to do?” He said with Bianca moving a bit to be more comfortable in his arms.
“So you came down from Olympus to make Bianca go back to sleep?” Will asked his dad.
“Exactly, and I thought that you might needed a bit of help.” Apollo stared at the baby sucking her pacifier peacefully in her sleep. “And you better keep your voices down or she’s going to wake up again.”
Apollo placed gently back In her crib and the three of them stepped outside.
As they closed the door behind them, Will cleared his throat. “Dad?”
“Yes?”
“I’m sorry that we haven’t officially called you yet to meet her. It’s been a few crazy first weeks with Bianca that we kind of lost track of time.” Will explained.
“I’m always keeping an eye on all of you. I am just making sure that your are safe especially now that you have my granddaughter to take care of.”

Vivs, I came across this from a "Ron's a jealous slacker" fan, please use your expertness to contradict this stupid statement. Y do ron stans refuse to accept that he just wanted attention without actually doing any hardwork! Didn't he just desire being a headboy & a quidditch captain? He would have achieved it if he would stop being a self piting, lazy person & actually study or practice to achieve his dreams! he doesn't deserve any sympathy we live in actual world where hardwork matters only.
The funniest thing about this is that they’re actually talking about Harry.
Harry actually never did put in effort to achieve things. Except this once when he mastered the Patronus at 13, we’ll give him that. But Quidditch? Oh he just hops on a broom and woah suddenly he’s flying so well he’s in the Quidditch team and gets a great broom and is totally the bestest and a total fucking Mary Sue! Fighting against Voldemort? Well thank god for Loveus Ex Machina that always saves your ass without ever making you lift a finger ever! And how he defeated Voldemort too? With a spell he learned in second year and he only won that fight because ~surprise~ Voldemort’s wand wasn’t okay with killing Harry for bullshit plot reasons. Amazing. Wonderful. Inspiring. Our hero, everyone, never actually worked for anything a day in his life, ever.
Meanwhile Ron? Actually worked hard to get on the Quidditch team, which was something he dreamed of. Actually moved his ass to learn to fight and didn’t have the luxury of ~lurrrrve~ to excuse him out of fights.  Ron actually did MORE than Harry ever did, but of course, protagonist-centred favouritism paired with mindless Harmonian propaganda won’t let you realize that because it’s just so much easier to imagine yourself as ~the special one :))~.

Okay first off - Ron estimates his study time to be “a few [hours]”. That’s more than I ever did for my own exams and wouldn’t you know it, I passed them.
Second off: THIS CONVERSATION IS CLEARLY MEANT TO BE HUMOROUS AND YOU’RE SUPPOSED TO HAVE THE SAME REACTION AS RON.
As in “holy shit this guy is insane”.
To top it off, here’s also Harry’s reaction in case some people still care about their hero’s agency:

No, Harry doesn’t care for studying and spending hours bending over a book. Harry would like to pass his exams and then never think about them again.

Harry wouldn’t have expected Ron to help him had Ron never helped him before. So we can extrapolate that not only does Ron does his homework, but he will also take time and effort to help Harry out if need be.
But of course Harry doesn’t need or care for Ron totally absolutely of course yes. (Another one for the “Harry picks Ron over Hermione” guys!!! Canon is on our side, sorry not sorry!)

In our world, Harry would be rich because Mummy and Daddy left him a trust fund, Hermione would have Mummy and Daddy’s money to help her get by until she can find some dead-end job she hates because the job market is shit, and poor Ron would be stuck in poverty because he was poor to begin with and getting out of poverty is much, much harder than getting rich.

Revolution (P5/PJO)
A warm up fic that I'm too nervous to put on A03. Unedited.
At age sixteen, Akira never expected to be part of a war. But then again, life as a demigod is anything but normal to begin with. He’s not even...he’s not even anything in the eyes of the gods but for some reason he was the child of the prophecy, whatever that meant. Akira always considered it a death sentence in waiting. Aren’t prophecies once in a lifetime opportunities?
Since the age of eleven, Akira has been forced to go on all sorts of different quests ranging from petty things such as being an over glorified uber eats for a god or something like preventing a war between two different monsters. Now it was a war.
A war that could be easily prevented if the gods or even some of the camp managers and leaders just opened their eyes and look. Akira would know. He was the son of a minor goddess after all, a mother who never bothered to claim him and a camp that force him into a cramped cabin of a god who is “so kind and merciful to let someone like him inside.”
Children of minor gods are usually one that can live in the outside world without major trouble. Apparently their scent is thinner and are less appealing than children of major goddesses such as his bunkmate Ryuji, child of Hermes and sweet Ann from Aprohidites. They are his best friend and he does not envy them at all. Both Ryuji and Ann has been through s much trouble because of their parent lineage. Left alone to single parents and their own human trouble combined with their demigods' trouble. He would do anything for them. Still, it would be nice to have someone to call as family. The only reason Akira even found out about his parentage is because of Goro.
Goro.
Goro had high expectation placed under him. As the son of Zeus it was expected. But he was never chosen to be in any important quest and spend most of his time training or in his cabin. Goro was one of the first people Akira met when he first came to camp. According to gossip, Goro has been in camp since the age of seven after his mother killed himself, overpressed by the idea of raising a child of god and especially after how lord Zeus practically left the two on their own. Goro was a loner on the outside and very bitter on the inside. When Akira got his first quest a month later, Goro practically ignored him. It was heartbreaking for the eleven year old for his new friend or at least someone he consider his friend to suddenly hate him.
He really wanted to go to the outside world with him but instead went with Ryuji and Ann. When he came back, bruised and bloodied, filled with new fears and deep hatred for salt water. He hoped his time away would have let his friend cool down enough for them to talk again but as soon as Akira laid eyes on the other the boy ran straight for his cabin. It wasn’t long until Akira got his first fetch quest. This time with Yusuke, son of Apollo and Futaba the quirky daughter of Hephaestus. It was a strange team, filled with dumb fights and hiding in the bathroom but it was successful.
Goro still won’t talk to him. Instead he ended up with two Ares girls on his twelfth birthday.
It was after this quest when he was finally given a small break. At this point he was desperate. He was tired,scared and most of all he wanted his friend back. So once he was left alone after dinner, he dragged Goro by the arm from the archery ring and into the Zeus cabin.
“We need to talk.”
They talked and talked and talked way past curfew, maybe they could have reconnect months ago. If only Akira was given a chance to settle down. But now he did.
It was Goro that figured out who his parent was, Goro always did say that whenever he was around Akira he always felt safe, at home. Other people told him that too. Even Akira felt the sense of family whenever he’s with his friends.
They hit the book soon after and came up with an answer.
Epione, the goddess of soothing pain.
Akira’s power seems to work with mental pain and after going on a quest with Goro and Hifumi, he can soothe small physical pain. Anything bigger than a small knife wound would leave him passed out on the ground. But it was better than any ambrosia or nectar, it was a rewarded feeling and an especially tiring one.
It made the quest after a lot easier.
Everything breaks down around the age of fifteen, it was quiet and sudden. Akira knew of camp deserters, they all did. It is often talked about in late night horror stories. Akira may have made one or two up on his own as well. But there has been an increase in unrest between the minor god and goddess children.
“The gods are using you as their playthings aren’t they?” Ten year old Nozoki told him one day. “How long can you keep winding yourself until you break?”
He still hasn't told anyone of his talk with the gods, yet.
It was after that day that people started leaving the camp in groups.

The older boy didn’t even say goodbye.
Was it something Akira has done?
Their last talk was another late night one. This time hanging out on the roof of Goro’s cabin. They were talking about school. Akechi was close to finishing high school and Akira was on his way to his last year. When Akechi asked of his future plans, Akira hesitated. Was there a future for him? Akira never thought he would make it this long, even then, he did not have the time to develop any hobbies or focus on school work compared to his peers. Who cared about school when the world was ending.
Maybe it was his defeated tone, he hated it at first he really did. But now Akira just accepts it as another part of life. Demigods don’t get to live long, everyone knows that, that’s why the camp was created in the first place to provide children a safe place to live and to teach them to survive. Akira who's been in and out of the camp in almost all of his teen years has a higher chance of an early death compared to his friends.
“What if everything change.” Goro talked in a low and deep voice. A tone Akira rarely hear outside of anger and battle. He must be serious. “What if we had a chance to go out into the world without any fear of getting killed or being forced by the gods to do whatever they want.”
“That’s a dangerous thought you have there.” He replied.
“Humor me Akira.”
“Well,” What kind of answers would satisfy Goro. He honestly never really bothered to even spend time daydreaming about this. What are somethings the seasonal campers talk about during dinner time?
“I think I want to go somewhere populated.”
“Somewhere populated, Kurusu-kun?”
He nodded. “Yeah like the scramble or Kyoto, maybe even destinyland.”
“Those are tourist traps Kurusu-kun.” Goro replied wirily.
“So? What I want my wallet to get tricked by the many faces of capitalism. Aren’t they places of memories. I don't mind spending my whole day in these places. It seems like fun.”
“You know, I expected someone like you to want something more dramatic. For someone who always lives in the danger zone.”
He shrugged. “Normal is Ok, I think I would like to be that mysterious man behind the bar.”
Goro actually snorted at that. “Are you even able to stay in one place for that long?”
Ok, so maybe Goro has a point. There no why he can stay in one place for so long. But if he gets to meet new people everyday it sure to be just as fun.
“-beside, I can’t see you handling alcohol.”
“Geez Goro, way to crush my dreams. I was thinking of running some kind of underground coffee bar. “
“An underground coffee bar. That sounds like you. I think I might have isted everyday.”
“Oh? A loyal customer ? Thank you for your patronage, good sir.”
“You’re very welcomed overworked barista.”
They sighed.
“Goro is everything OK?| He finally asked. “What you have been saying lately has me worried. You know the people upstairs can hear everything here right?”
“Of course, please do not worry about me Akira-kun, I’m sure you already have lots on your plate right now.”
“But I always have space in my heart for you. Please ‘kechi, I won’t tell anyone no matter what you tell me. On my life.”
“You really shouldn’t be putting your life on the line so easily.” Goro mumbled, mostly to himself but Akira heard it all anyway.
“It’s all part of the job.” He chirp back.
The next day he was gone.
A traitor everyone called him, someone who abandoned the gods to join the wrong side historically and morally. It did not take long for the rumors to start around camp.
“I’ve always knew he was evil.”
“He was always acting so creepy around Akira I wonder if he was ever planning on killing him.”
“It’s good that he left, who knows what he would’ve done if he stayed. “
It was getting harder and harder to face each day with a smile without Goro. His other friends at least one that has yet to publicly disowned Goro stayed by his side comforting him telling him that everything is alright.
But war, war is coming and Akira is expected to be in the front line as a leader. He can’t. He does not want to do this any more. Oh godly parent please give him a sign.
But nothing came.
Nothing but ruin for Tokyo.
They were
Winning
Losing
Dying
...fighting.
They were fighting for their life, each of his friends split up into different groups to try and take back different parts of the city.
Akira was tasked to find the leader of the resistance and to put an end to it once and for all, a fitting task for the hero.
It did not take long to find him, he was exactly where Akira expected him to be and exactly where Goro wanted him to be at.
“Goro,” He mumbled, approaching his enemy with his dagger clutched in his hand tightly. “I came to stop you.”
Goro turned around to face him. Instead of the camp t-shirt and ripped jeans that Akira normally sees him in. He was instead wearing a leather jacket and a collared shirt underneath his regular jeans. It was a strange combination but Akira can’t help but to think it suits Goro well.
“I’m happy you came.”
“This is our meeting place after all.”
Enough with the banter, Akira can’t afford to stall now, not when everyone is fighting for their lives.
“Goro, surrender now. I can get the gods to put you on probation or something bu-”
“You know that’s not true. Do you really think that will pay attention to a mortal even someone like you, since when have they done anything for you.”
“I-”
“Think Akira.” Goro shouted, holding on to his shoulder for dear life. “You’ve been used over and over again. We were just kids. You don’t even have a childhood doesn’t that upset you?”
It did, it still does but Goro knows that he does not like to think about that.
“I used to be so scared.” Goro’s volume went down all the way to a whisper as if talking about this of all things would finally get him stuck down by lightning. “Everytime you come home your eyes would grow darker and darker. I used to have nightmares that the darkness would eat you alive. The trauma you endured. As a son of one of the big three it should have been me.”
Akira shook his head vigorously, he could even feel some of the hair strand stabbing his eyes. It burns a bit, but that’s not important.
“No Goro! I would never wish this life on anyone. The quest, the glory. It’s not worth it! I wanted you to be safe and happy but you ignored me.”
“I know.” Goro’s hand slowly trailed down until they came right above his waist putting the two in some sort of half hug position. “I’m sorry Akira.”
Akira swallowed back a sob threatening to come out. His dagger was right there and Goro was so close and vulnerable. He could end this, he can stop this war once and for all.
“Goro please, end this war. That way everything will go back to normal.”
“You know that’s not what’s going to happen. The gods will use you again and again until you one day burn out and they choose the next unlucky kid to be the hero.” Goro paused. “Akira...why don’t you join me.”
“Hu-”
“Lots of our men need healing. With your powers you can save them! Your mother may not recognize you but we do. We can stop this cycle and give everyone a better future. We would no longer live in fear or worried over someone’s temper tantrum. Akira, I know I haven’t been a good friend to you but I can make it all up now so please.”
Goro reached out his hand and dropped his weapon.
“Join me.”
Akira dropped his dagger as well.
He knows this isn’t the right choice, if they were to fail both Akira and Goro would face harsh unimaginable punishment. But Goro along with everything he ever wanted was right there.

New Gods On The Block: Expectations Of Self Worth & Family Name.

Hey, Scrooge will come to his senses and realize you’re the best adventuring team he’s ever had. Nothing bad is gonna happen.
Well, here I was thinking New Gods on the Block would be a Donald and Daisy focused episode, but it being a mash up between Della supporting the kids self-esteem along with those two’s shenanigans, regarding Storkules interference was a welcoming surprise I very much enjoyed. Della has been on the sidelines for quite a good chunk of Season 3 and what better time to bring her into the fold when these kids are feeling lower than usual after a failed adventure with Scrooge? Scrooge McDuck, despite having grown a very loving connection with them, is still someone that has high expectations for greatness, so when you’ve got children that want to be as strong as their role model, it creates a potential for serious doubts in their minds. Doesn’t help Scrooge is wanting to find more professional people for this current adventure to retrieve an artifact Huey, Dewey, Louie, and Webby didn’t have the apparent in sync team work to pull off this time. They’ve always admired Scrooge as their elder relative, where hearing him say they are more or less not cut out for the job can make them all wonder, “If we failed this time, who’s to say it won’t become a greater issue?”. We got light of this idea in Dewey’s episode, The Rumble For Ragnorok, where he was greatly worried about the future of inheriting everything Scrooge has stood for. New Gods on the Block puts that perspective into gear with all their worries and concerns about living up their great uncle’s achievements in life. It’s already hard enough trying to make yourself feel happy, but when you’re related to a beyond talented relative it can in turn hurt your pride and ego in the long run.

We got to see a very good contrast between Della & Scrooge’s ways of parenting in how they comfort the children emotionally. Puts into perspective Della’s considering nature of how the kids might feel, instead of herself. Della has made it evident time and time again that they’ve never had to prove anything to be worthy of standing alongside her in adventuring, even though she too has a renowned reputation for what she’s managed to create for herself in McDuck history. We’ve seen this with Dewey & Webby in their own respective episodes centered around trying to impress and earn Della’s admiration in Season 2. Della goes above all else to tell them they don’t need to be like her to feel worthy of themselves because they already were equals to begin with. They’re a family, so they don’t need to compete for someone’s affection. Della has gone to clarify that point as much as possible to make them feel more secure about their place in the McDuck lineage. It’s always important for a parent to never let your kid feel inadequate about their role in the family tree, which Della understands a hundred percent. Scrooge does love and respect the kids with ever fiber of his being, but he can get so wrapped up in himself at points that he forgets to comfort them when they need it, too. That plays an important part in why they took on the test to see who could be a better God. It parallels with how they view Scrooge as someone who’s equal to that level of grandeur. Huey, Dewey, Louie, and Webby are so amazed at what Scrooge can be capable of doing they wholeheartedly believe that becoming Godly beings will help close that gap of inexperience. Something that Della does her best to fully support them in all trying to accomplish with, mind you, unpleasant results.

Della’s heart is certainly in the right place without a doubt. However, allowing the kids to participate in a contest that involves becoming an all mighty powerful being was a recipe for disaster. Although very funny shenanigans ensued, yes, it only threw more fuel onto that fire about whether or not they could live up to the name of McDuck. It’s endearing that Della strives to want the best for them, but this wasn’t a route to take, which comes to a head with Selene saying they’re not ready take on that responsibility and are too inexperienced for it. Della’s goal was for the youngsters to not feel out of place just because of an unfortunate failure. Della’s all too familiar with the concept of failure because of the Spear Of Selene, since she had to work through that and regain her confidence again over time. It’s pretty safe to say Della didn’t want them to feel like how she did under those circumstances, even if this is a very different situation with less higher stakes. Regardless, the kids were near naturally because of their concern for the results of whom Selene might choose. Out of all stuff this was the last thing the children needed to overhear because it makes them feel terribly worse off than before in their thinking about what they can contribute, overall. Della wanted nothing more than for them to feel worthy about who they are, but went overboard with what the resolution should be. It’s not about getting newfound powers to compensate for something else you’re lacking. What’s most important is one thing that every person in a family needs to hear especially. Validation.

Validation that you are more than enough and don’t need a fancy gimmick to earn said love or respect, either. This mindset is one thing Della realizes, where to get toward the root of this problem isn’t about trying to give them new powers, but confront their Uncle Scrooge head on about this big issue the kids are reeling over in emotional pain about. Scrooge’s biggest problem has always been how he can overlook issues when he’s laser focused on his own goals. He’s stubborn, prideful, an egotist to a degree, and deep down very affectionate to each member of his crazy family. Does Scrooge ever communicate those feelings often to them? Well, no, he doesn’t because the stubborn geezer felt confident they already knew that fact with how much Scrooge has helped to better themselves as people. Scrooge’s issue is learning that sometimes actions aren’t enough to show family how much you cherish them, but actually communicating those words to them directly. Actions can speak louder than words, as shown off in the Season 1 finale with their loving hug of forgiveness, but here the kids needed to hear him sing those praises more than anything.

Scrooge needed to understand there are plenty of times where you’re gonna have to make your affection known through words and not just actions alone. It’s an imperative part of what it means to be a parental figure. You need to acknowledge their strengths for what they accomplish, so the younger ones don’t start getting too self conscious about not feeling like an equal family relative. It must be known for the younger generation that each of them are an important part of what makes your life feel whole when you’re guiding them, like every parent should commit to doing. Della & Scrooge’s aspect of supporting the kids was what made this story a stand out in quality. Their struggles gave us insight into how Della’s parenting is versus Scrooge’s showing us the pros and cons of what makes their approaches work and not, too. All of that is wonderfully paid off by Scrooge’s apology to them about needing to prove their skills to him.

New Gods on the Block was a welcoming surprise I loved. Very pleased with how it turned out. We got to see more Della bonding with the kids reflecting on how she and Scrooge handle them with their emotional issues. Not to mention, we actually got an apology from Scrooge McDuck to the kids, which is a very rare thing to see him say, as he usually speaks that kind of stuff through remorseful actions, rather than communication.

d/n soulmate au where the gods are in charge of letting mortals know who their soulmates are, but every god has slightly different methods/can choose the methods/etc
and one method is getting your soulmate's name on your wrist when they learn to write, so after a whole life of dreaming of maybe one day finding his soulmate, numair gets this super janky 'kid just learning to write' D-A-I-N-E on his wrist when he's like 19-20, and alanna is there to go "....well that's awk lol" and he Has Feelings about that a lot, esp after meeting daine (bc he's totally someone who has lots of Feelings about the subject in general)
(it was given to him by enzi as a reward for his help because it's about as straightforward and infallible a soulmate indicator as you can get, really, and enzi has all four of his feet on the ground. or in the zekoi, as it were.)
MEANWHILE.
DAINE.
HAS TWO GODLY PARENTS AND A BUNCH OF PATRONS/GODS WHO ARE INVESTED IN HER LIFE.
and each and every one of them decides "you know what? this kid has gone through/will go through Too Much, she DESERVES her soulmate"
except they all do it separately
so gainel, as her dad's friend, decides that she should know her soulmate through dreams and ends up giving her the power to see/connect with numair's life in her sleep, so she has several highly traumatic months when she's like 5-6 and numair's going through carthak hell
weiryn decides that if wolves don't need to see color, then daine should learn to function without just as well (or something; teach her to hunt better without color, maybe?) so he gives her the 'colorblind until you touch your soulmate for the first time' one (and, you know, the first time daine touches numair she thinks he's a hawk)
and queenclaw graciously bestows daine with the ability to communicate with her soulmate through skin writing, so daine goes through her childhood with grease pencil marks of math equations and notes written on her arms in thak that make NO FUCKING SENSE and disappear before she can show anyone, and daine, not being in possession of much ink or writing skill or grease pencils or thak vocabulary (much less university-level), gets absolutely no communication out of it whatsoever
and once the badger meets daine as a walking talking person, he goes 'well, you deserve something good, here, take the power to find your soulmate anywhere anytime' (and carthak WOULD have gone better this time if only the sleep drugs hadn't messed with daine's head quite so badly and numair hadn't shut himself off quite so thoroughly, so actually that was a bust and also useless)
and then after carthak the graveyard hag decides that none of this would have happened and everything would have gone her way if only daine had known that numair wasn't dead, and her response is... to give daine the power to know exactly how much danger he's in at all times... (and only after thinking better of letting her know exactly when he's going to die)
(the war is a fun little jaunt, truly. it's a miracle only numair went grey.)
and then mithros apologizes (sort of) for the utter shit they put her through by giving her a red thread of fate, which is actually kind of a comfort to daine even though it's redundant as hell, because she can just look at her thread and know that numair is on the other end of the line, no stress involved
and sarra was updated to NONE of this and so gives daine a "your soulmate's name appears on your wrist on your 18th birthday" soulmate indicator when daine and numair get trapped in the divine realms
and by the time daine gets the name, she's just. so u t t e r l y done. YES NUMAIR IS HER SOULMATE SHE KNOWS THAT SHE KNOWS THIS IT'S GOOD IT'S F I N E JUST CHILL ALREADY.
she hasn't brought it up with numair because of awkwardness reasons and she has no idea he even knows (because, as said, the gods are roughly in control of who gets evidence of a Soulmate™ and she doesn't know if numair got lucky with that or not—she's assuming not because he never gave any indication of knowing, either)
so sarra is visiting daine with some of the other gods during the beltane after daine's bday and she's like "sooooo? ;) ;) ;) have you thought about your sooooulmaaaate yeeeeeet~?"
and numair freezes like ahhh fuck. it's him and daine doesn't know that and this is such awful timing and [insert laundry list of reasons it Should Not Happen] and—
and daine finally just snaps
"YES I'VE THOUGHT ABOUT MY SOULMATE. I PICKED UP A HAWK AND SAW COLOR FOR THE FIRST TIME. I THOUGHT MY SOULMATE WAS A GODDAMN HAWK FOR THREE DAYS. I DREAMED ABOUT THE CARTHAK TORTURE CHAMBER FOR MONTHS. I SPENT MY CHILDHOOD WITH MATH ON MY ARMS. I KNOW WHERE NUMAIR IS AND HOW HE'S DOING NO MATTER WHAT. I HAVE A RED STRING TIED TO MY FINGER RIGHT NOW. I'VE THOUGHT ABOUT IT. I'VE FUCKING THOUGHT ABOUT IT."
and numair is just there choking on his food.
the gods awkwardly confess to giving her their 'blessing' and their reasons behind it while they all slowly realize that they've actually kinda fucked her over haven't they
and numair rEALLY wants to ask but instead all he does is squeeze her shoulder and tell her "in your own time" and she just about cries, because numair is just there being his sweet gentle self and also maybe she loves him.
(she does tell him about it on her own time. and then there are makeouts.)

I MISS BABY NICO’S PERSONALITY SM ... which is why i propose that whenever one of his friend’s see his eyes sparkling and arms waving while he babbles abt whatever topic, they think it’s really cute !!!! like !! keep talking !!

"Monster In-Law" -- [1981]
My stomach is in uncomfortable knots as I rub foundation over my skin, nervously, trying not to shit myself with anxiety as the clock nears 7:00pm. 
I hope he's not late, but I also hope he doesn't even show. 
"I wonder if it's Luke Ginson." I hear my mother suggest to my father, the sound of clicking silverware lets me know they're setting the table, and I wrinkle my nose. 
"You think Vivian would be interested in the Preacher's son, Charlette?" My dad replies, doubt in his voice. 
"I hope so. He's a Godly young man, Johnny, that our Vivian would be lucky to go with." She replies and I have to hold back a scoff. 
Luke Ginson was our pastor's son but was just as debauched as Vince, Tommy and Nikki, only hiding behind the fact his dad was a preacher as a cover. I'd later find out my mom and Pastor Garret had planned on approaching me and Luke with the idea of going out. I wonder if she felt like an absolute idiot for thinking he was so much better for me than Nikki when Luke popped up in the obituary in 1988 after dying of a methadone overdose…
"Vivian would be lucky to go out with?" My dad questions her. "Any guy is lucky to even be breathing the same air as her, Charlette, don't act like our girl is so--"
"--I'm not." My mom insists. "She just needs a little push in the right direction."
"And Luke Ginson is the right direction?"
"Of course!" She says it as if she's offended he'd dare suggest otherwise, and I let out a heavy breath, my nerves only tensing up more. 
She thinks I'm bringing her Lord and Savior Luke Ginson to dinner...great. 
I'm ready just in time, hearing the door of Nikki's beat up car shut outside. 
I'm darting down the stairs, glad that my parents haven't noticed, and open the door before he can ring the doorbell. 
He's dressed as nice as he can be, jeans, a tshirt, and his leather jacket. 
"Hi." He says, smiling at me, looking me up and down. "You look hot." 
"Thank you." I reply, my eyes catching on the rosary around his neck. "Oh, no, she can't see that, we're Assembly of God, she's gonna think you're Catholic." I mumble as I quickly tuck it into his shirt as my mom says, "Vivian, is he here?" A little too excitedly. 
"Um, yes ma'am, coming!" I call, looking at Nikki.
"Relax, babe, I got this." He assures me deviously as we step inside and I lead him to the dining room, gulping when I meet my mother's eyes as she steps in with a pitcher of lemonade. 
She sets her sights on Nikki and drops the dish, causing the heavy glass to break and lemonade to slosh onto the floor, and I keep myself from squeezing my eyes closed to retreat to my mind. 
"Charlette, honey, be more care--" My dad stops talking when he walks in to see Nikki, "--ful." He finishes, immediately going into salvage mode. "H-Hey, hi," he smiles widely at Nikki, seeming to be amused with my choice of date, "I'm Johnny." My dad extends his hand. 
"Nikki." Nikki takes it. 
"Johnny, Vivian, a word, please." My mom says, obviously seething. 
"Oh, Charlette, we don't have time...the steaks will get cold." He tells her to save me, and she stomps into the kitchen before he looks at me. 
"Thank you." I mouth and he winks at me. 
"She was expecting someone else." My dad tells Nikki, putting an arm around his shoulder and patting him as we step to the table. 
Nikki finds this humorous and snorts a little, causing me to glare at him because it's not funny. 
"Would you like something to drink, Nikki?" I ask quietly as my dad wipes up the lemonade and gets what pieces of glass he can get off the floor. 
"I really don't think your parents have Jack, do they?" He mumbles and I shake my head a little, smiling sadly at him. "I'm in hell." He adds as I chuckle. "Whatever you guys have is fine with me." He says next and I nod, heading to the kitchen to grab him a soda from the fridge. 
My mom's angrily preparing to bring the plate of steaks to the table, her red lips in an almost snarl as she glances at me. 
"This is not what we do, Vivian." She states to me and I roll my eyes. 
"Mom--"
"--You know better than to get in with the likes of him." She keeps on.
"I know he's not Luke freaking Ginson, mom, but he's good to me and I really like him." 
"Oh, he's good to you?" She asks with a mocking laugh, turning to face me with her hands on her hips. 
"Yes, he is." I stand by what I said. 
"Your Aunt Lily is rolling in her grave at the sound of you giving props to the same type of man that completely wrecked her life, and eventually took it away from her altogether." She hisses, turning back around to grab the plate, while I'm struck speechless. "Grab the fries and string beans." She tells me, walking back out to the table. 
I push my tears back and grab the beans, sitting them next to the steaks as I hand Nikki his soda, next. 
"Looks good." He comments about the food. 
"Very good." Dad puts in next, sitting down. "Thank you, Charlette." He says next in reference to her helping with dinner. 
"Who would like to say prayer?" She ignores him, her eyes glassed with tears the longer she looks at Nikki and I next to each other.
"I will." Dad says, and I bow my head and close my eyes. "Father, in heaven, I pray. Forgive me of my sins, Lord. Thank you for continuing to bless us with new opportunities to meet and love on others. Thank you for your comforting hand, and not leaving one tear that's been shed recently over Lilian, unacknowledged. I pray that you continue to keep your hand over this family, protect us and those we love, but above all, I pray whatever your will is, let it be done. Thank you for this meal we are so fortunate to have, may it nourish and strengthen our bodies so our bodies may continue to be used unto your service. In Christ Jesus' name I pray. Amen." He finishes. 
"Amen." Mom and I echo, and Nikki looks at me, already chewing steak, letting me know he started eating during the blessing. 
My mother notices, too, her hand tightening around her fork.
My dad just shrugs it off before asking him, "So, Nikki, what is it you do for a living, or are you in school?" My dad asks him and my mom rudely scoffs as if it's impossible that Nikki's in college currently. 
"No, I'm kinda doing odd jobs. Right now I'm telemarketing." He explains. 
“Is that what the kids are calling drug dealing nowadays?” My mom remarks, snidely.
“Mom.” I say, shooting daggers her way and she raises her brows.
“What, I’m just asking a legitimate question, Vivian.” She tells me, raising her brows. “What, with the knotted, unnaturally black hair, eye liner and uncomfortably ripped pants that make him look like he got caught in a barbed wire fence while escaping a prison, I think it’s safe to assume he enjoys listening to the same sex, alcohol and drug endorsing music as--”
“--Charlette.” My dad sighs out, looking at her as if to say, “seriously?”
“And don’t even get me started on the rosary hiding under his shirt.” She promptly points out and he and I both tense up. “Not only did you bring home an imbecile, Vivian, but a Catholic imbecile.” She sarcastically congratulates me. “I’m sure God is so very pleased with you.” She adds and I wince as she abruptly corrects herself, looking at Nikki as she says, “or, as you Catholics believe, ‘Mother Mary.”
“Mom--”
“--Do you not feel ridiculous believing that you have to plead with dead disciples and Mary to talk to God on your behalf because simply going to God directly in prayer isn’t enough. Because I assure you, what, with the ‘Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of the womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now, and at the hour of our death’, I promise you she’s looking down at your ignorance and telling you to just talk to Jesus or God yourself because she’s a woman, and men don’t listen--not even the divine.” She states, and my father has his face buried in his hands, and I can tell my expression is mortified as my mom just casually starts cutting her steak while Nikki just keeps his amused grin on his lips.
“No, my prayers are usually done in the dead of night in a discreet location in the hills, with the sacrificial offering of a virgin with the entirety of the Sunset Strip nightlife in attendance while Blackie Lawless sings 'I Fly Away’ backwards while wearing a goat carcass.” He tells her without skipping a beat. 
Her jaw clenches, her eye twitching as me and my dad are both sitting, paralyzed, and I feel the color draining from my face by the second. 
"Then you have no business associating yourself with my daughter." My mom quips, staring at him resentfully.
"Mmm, she's our latest sacrificial virgin." Nikki replies and my mother slams her fork onto her plate, throwing her napkin onto the table. 
"I need fresh air." She states in a hiss, going to the door and slamming it. 
We all just sit in silence for a moment, before Nikki looks at my dad. 
"I'm not really using her as a sacrificial virgin." He tells him, and my dad raises a brow. 
"I figured being that it wouldn't do much good." My dad mumbles. "Well, kids, moments like these I wish I wouldn't have stopped drinking." He sighs out next, standing. "I'm sorry for her mother's lack of manners and boundaries. She wasn't always like this." He assures Nikki. "And no matter your beliefs--it's not our business--as long as Vivian's comfortable…" he says next and Nikki nods as if he's thinking about it before my dad opens the door to go talk my mom down.

*inhales* part 10. I am going to give myself a pat on the back.
In short: Nico gets therapy from Dionysus. Todays’ subject: Hades. Rest is: Right here. 
This Might Be Crazy part 10: Fanta
‘Nico?’ 
Huh? I stopped doing what I was doing and looked at the clock. 10 A.M. ‘Dionysus, sir?’
‘I thought you would be awake. If you are not plotting out a plan to save the world, would you mind if we did a therapy session?’
I would not particularly mind. I got up from the ground, walked to the door and opened it. ‘Yes, we can do a small session.’ 
Dionysus looked at me. ‘Good. Denny’s?’
‘Where else?’
Mary pushed a Fanta into my hands as soon as we entered the restaurant. ‘I am glad to see you are doing better!’
‘Eh, yes, sorry for not sending you a message after what happened last time.’ 
Dionysus shrugged. ‘I let her know you were feeling better.’ Aha.
‘...Thanks. To you too, Mary, for the Fanta.’
She smiled and winked again. ‘I get it, Nico. Now go talk about important things. I am expecting a small rush of pre-party people to come in soon and you two are in the way.’ 
We sat down and I took a deep breath. 
‘Alright, are you feeling calm enough to start?’ 
‘Yes. I think I am ready.’ 
‘Good.’ He waited while I pulled the tab of my can. ‘Let’s start at the very beginning. How did you first meet your father?’ I took a sip while trying to put my thoughts in order.
‘I probably first met him… right before he transported me, my sister and my mother out of fascist Italy, to America. I… don’t really have a lot of memories of that. Just that one day, mom said that Mussolini was not our leader anymore, we were in a new house and there was a tall, scary, pale man.’ I shrugged. I wanted to dig further in my memories, to remember exactly what happened, but on the other hand I did not think that that was a good idea. I shifted the can around. 
´Then… I remember a hotel lobby, it must have been near Los Angeles. It was nothing fancy. Me… my sister was playing with me on the floor, and I remember that the same creepy man was sitting next to my mother. It could be that I don’t really remember him being there, but like... that I think he probably was there.’ Dionysus nodded as if he understood. ‘Then there was a loud noise, like a bomb going off and the next thing I remember is that someone delivers us to this loud, flashy place, just… think Vegas, because it was Vegas…’ My voice died down. I fumbled with my Fanta can. ‘...And my mother was gone,’ I quietly said. 
‘I think it is very likely that what you are saying are not all memories, but that you are piecing a few things together, like you said. Don’t worry about that. Now, if you can go on, go on,’ Dionysus reassured me. 
‘Bianca and I were brought to the Lotus hotel and casino.’ Dionysus blinked a few times. ‘It’s, uh… from what I can remember... and from what Percy filled me in on, because he has been there too… on first glance it seems like the best hotel in all of Vegas, filled with everything a kid would love. The difference is that time goes way faster in that place than in the rest of the world. If you’d ask me, and you are, I would say that my sister and I were in there for perhaps a few weeks. Yet, when we got out, it was suddenly a new century.’
‘I... know of the Lotus hotel, let us keep it at that,’ Dionysus told me. Even though that was interesting, I sighed and went on. I had something important to say next. 
 I…’ I took a sip, which stopped me from talking, ‘I am sure he wanted to protect us. Hades, I mean. From Zeus, who… I believe he was the one who… made that other hotel collapse. I don't… I don't know…’ I shrugged. I held a hand in front of my eyes. The talking had gone easier than I had expected, but now the tears were starting to catch up. ‘Perhaps the relationships between the gods in the years leading up to the second world war were a factor.’
‘They absolutely were, yet…’ Dionysus shook his head. ‘Hm. I mean that while that is true, Zeus can be…’ He did not finish the sentence, but I understood. ‘Do you need a break?’ he asked, while a tear rolled down my cheek. 
‘Just a moment,’ I answered, ‘I… a lot is coming out right now.’
He nodded again, while waiting for me to dry my eyes, take a few breaths and sip my Fanta. Meanwhile, a song came on the radio. ‘The sun ain´t gonna shine anymore,’ from the Walker Brothers. 
‘That is one of the songs that I vividly remember playing in the Lotus hotel,’ I explained. ‘There are a few of those, like Rum and Coca cola, Don´t go breaking my heart, Girls just wanna have fun…’
‘Those are songs from different eras. Different decades.’
‘Yes well, they just came by, one by one. Only the biggest hits, as if the other songs were forgotten too fast.’ I sighed again. ‘The hotel was a blur, a fantastic blur. Yet, after those… what felt like weeks, we were picked up by someone who turned out to be Alecto. Me and my sister were brought to a military school.’ At this point I could not help but roll my eyes. ‘We quickly learned that we were in a strange new place, without Yugoslavia and stuff.’ Dionysus smiled when I mentioned Yugoslavia. Alright, it was a pretty strange way of saying that the world had changed. ‘After a few months, Percy, Thalia and the others found us and brought us to camp.’ I took a sip. My eyes narrowed.
‘Then… You know, even though I was introduced to the world of demigods, I only really met my dad a year and a half later...’
‘I was like nineteen when I first really met Zeus.’ I looked up at Dionysus. 
‘You did?’
‘Yes, after I wreaked enough havoc, Zeus finally decided that it was probably time to grand me the time of day…’ he took a deep breath. ‘But this is not about that.’
‘Is it not? It is at least good to know that other godly parents can be just as… well…’
‘Negligent.’ That got me quiet. I had not expected him to say that. ‘You are surprised.’
‘I mean, I did not expect…’ I shuddered with my shoulders. 
‘I have been at your camp for almost seventeen years at this point, I have been a demigod and you don't think that I know how cold the gods can be?’ I could not really think of a reaction. 
Dionysus seemed to come to his senses after that. ‘So… I think you should go on. You were really on a roll.’
‘Alright. So, the time I really met him.’ I began to feel nervous again. ‘I… I went into the underworld after I talked to Percy. You know that, because you talked to Percy afterwards, I saw it.’ Dionysus did not look apologetic at all for eavesdropping on us. Godly awareness only went so far, I guess. ‘When I came into the underworld… well, my father… he immediately called me over to the palace. He did not want…’ I looked at the table and took a deep breath. 
‘Take it easy.’
‘Either he did not want me to roam around the underworld on my own, or he really did care for me, or something else. The why is besides the point.’
‘We´ll get to the why soon, after you’ve finished talking.’ Joy!
‘Luckily that was during the summer. That meant I had some time to get to know my dad, and he could get to know me, before…’ I sighed, ‘Before Persephone got a say in the matter.’ 
‘Hm.’
‘So… I quite soon learned… he probably… prefered my sister over me.’ 
‘Why do you think that?’
‘He told me.’
‘Aha.’
‘Yes. He… maybe he did not mean it. Maybe he was just devastated because she was…’ My throat began to hurt. Tears were burning in the corners of my eyes. ‘Because she was dead. And he had...’ My eyebrows raised while I came to a conclusion. ‘... he had saved us up, I guess, so that we could be a part of a prophecy. So that we, or at least he, would be important for once. And I think he saw that plan go up in smoke. I… I don’t know if I should be happy that he wanted to give us a part in a prophecy.’ I really did not know. If I had not been part of the prophecy, I would have never had Will, or I would have still been in the Lotus casino. But being part of the prophecy was not something I liked, much less three times. Plus, it seemed like Hades mostly wanted to do it for his own good. ‘I… maybe Hades does have good meanings, but he can’t really express it.’
Dionysus put a hand on the table. ‘He might have trouble expressing how he feels, but that does not excuse him from hurting you the way he did, or from the fact that he wanted to use you for his own goal. He should have known better.’
‘Do the gods ever know better?’ It was out before I knew it. Dionysus raised his eyebrows. I decided to let him pick up the conversation again. 
‘I cannot answer that. Not now.’ He looked at the table
‘Should we stop?’ I asked. ‘If it gets difficult, we can stop.’ 
‘Watch your words, Nico.’ I grinned. ‘I’ll say what I am thinking first, and then we can stop. I think you already came up with the solution to why your father wanted you in the palace. I, indeed, think that he wanted a child of Hades to be the hero of a prophecy. He probably reasoned that if a child of Hades saved the day, he would be more welcome in his family, but so would his kids.’ 
‘You are saying that it was good for him and for me and my siblings?’
‘I am saying that I think he thought that was the case.’
‘Then he was right. I helped with the titan war, and now I’ve got my own cabin.’

I thought for a moment. ‘No, it doesn’t.’ I downed the last sip of Fanta. ‘I think we can stop now. Because it got so difficult for you.’
‘Watch your words. We’ll go on about Hades next time, unless something important comes up in your life and you would prefer to talk about that.’
‘Yes, alright.’ Probably not. I wanted clarity and I felt like we had been stalling long enough. Time to get it over with - after I got a few good nights rest.

“She’s crying again, Percy.” Annabeth yawns, refusing to open her eyes. No one told her she’d still be waking up in the middle of the night with a one year old.
He kisses her forehead, and rolls off the bed. “I got it.”
She thinks about how lucky she is — to have him; to have this beautiful part of both of them. The thoughts calm her — she’s almost back to sleep when she hears a thud, jolting upright and alert immediately. “What is it?”
“Sorry,” Percy rushes to her side, “I just stubbed my toe.”
“No monsters?”
“No monsters, Annabeth.” At least not tonight. “Everything’s okay.”
And it is, for a little while.

They do come. Once, twice; as she gets older, they lose count. Sometimes they’re real, sometimes they’re not.
“Daddy.” Percy can barely see Lyra rubbing her eyes in the shadow of the doorframe, tottering over to his side of the bed, only illuminated by the moonlight and light pollution.
He whispers, trying not to wake Annabeth (as he knows it’s hard enough for her to get to sleep once), “What’s wrong, baby?”
“Monsters.”
It’s silent, save for the ever-present hum of the city that his ears have learned to regard as background noise. There’s no monsters tonight.
“C’mere.” He scoops her up, tucking her in tight under the covers in the middle of their bed. “You just had a bad dream.”

Tonight, it’s gorgons. It’s nothing they haven’t dealt with before, and it won’t be the last time, but after he’s stowed Riptide back in his pocket, Percy feels an intense wave of exhaustion roll over him. It feels like he’s just going through the motions, fight after fight; living each day wondering if they’ll get any sleep. 
“Annabeth.” Percy’s hand ghosts over her shoulder blade, seeing the rapidly forming bruise peeking out of her tank top. She winces. “Sorry.”
She turns to face him, taking his hand, “It’s okay. I love you.” It’s going to hurt, and she knows that — but it’s better than the pain she would feel seeing her daughter get hurt. She could get a paper cut, or a splinter, or some other normal kid injury, and Annabeth would have to hold back tears just to bandage her up. This pain is as familiar as her own skin, and she knows how to deal with it. So she will.
Percy squeezes her hand softly, and kisses her cheek. “I love you.” Just saying it brings a sense of peace to his tired body.
“I’m gonna go make sure she’s okay.” If they’re lucky, she’s fallen back asleep. If not...
Lyra runs straight to her, towing a blanket draped over her head, and clings to Annabeth’s leg, crying. She must’ve had a real scare.  
“It’s okay. It’s gone.” Annabeth scoops her up, and holds her close, fingers threaded through soft brown curls. “You’re safe now.”
Lyra’s sniffles grow quieter; more infrequent as she calms in her mother’s arms. “Gone?”
“All gone, baby. I promise.” She lays her down into her bed, tucking her tightly into a sea of blankets.
Annabeth sings her to sleep, and as Percy stands in the doorway, still brushing dirt off his clothes, he thinks it’s the most beautiful thing he’s ever heard.
She gets up, smiling when she notices him, and the awed look on his face, “What?”
“I never knew you could sing like that. Thirteen years and I never knew how beautiful your voice is.”
Annabeth has no idea how to respond. All she knows for sure is how eternally grateful she is for him, and the life they’ve built together; and they’re safe, and alive, and happy, most of the time, and that’s all that matters. So she wraps her arms around him, strong and tight, and tries to hold back the tears that threaten to come. They both cry for everything they still don’t know.

“I hope you realize, this is extremely unprecedented.”
“You’re telling me we’re the only demigod couples to ever have kids?” Piper raises an eyebrow.
“Not the only, but one of the few.” Chiron pauses, leaving it to them to come to a conclusion as to why. It’s not something they want to dwell on. “And certainly not any of such… heritage.” He glances toward Percy and Jason. “When you all were born you received half of each parent’s DNA — in your case, half god, half mortal. The same principles apply to your children. With the way we’ve seen their powers develop already, at such young ages, I believe Calliope and Lyra may have a greater percentage of godly blood. I can’t say with any certainty just how much or from who — I’m sure we’ll see their powers grow with time — but I fear this is going to put them in danger. There’s a prophecy—”
“No,” Percy says, firm, “I don’t want to hear about another fucking prophecy.”
Annabeth smooths her hand against his back. “Percy…”
“I won’t let her grow up the same way we did.” His voice cracks as he finishes his sentence, trying to hide how upset the idea makes him.
She holds him closer. “I know.”
Chiron continues, “I’m afraid there’s not much I can tell you. It’s incredibly vague, as these things tend to be. A warning of descendants of powerful gods from two sides.”
“You thought it was us,” Jason says, “Percy and me. That’s why you wanted to see us.”
“Correct. It seems, though…”
“They shouldn’t see each other.” Annabeth juts in, quiet. “Lyra can already spill her sippy cups when she’s upset, and Piper’s seen Callie make people’s hair stand on end. That’s not a good combination.”
Piper looks like she’s about to speak up, but Jason takes her hand. “She’s probably right. It’s too dangerous.” She knows it is. It doesn’t make it any harder. When she found out Annabeth was pregnant all she could think about was how wonderful it would be to watch them grow up alongside each other.
“I want to hear it,” Piper says, loud and clear, demanding. “The prophecy.”

“Fuck,” Percy swears, wincing.
“Stay still.” She threads the needle between the edges of the laceration with a steady hand. It’s like her brain completely shuts off, its only directive to stitch him back together. “You wouldn’t be sitting here if you’d listened when I said to double back.” She know she sounds bitter, but her words are so disconnected from her thoughts, they feel foreign in her mouth.
“I thought I had enough time.”
“Percy,” she warns, “Don’t scare me like that. When you get overconfident you get reckless. You know that.” I know. I do too.
“I know, but— ow —if we get sloppy that’s just putting her in danger.”
Annabeth pauses, tying the last stitch off without another word. The silence doesn’t last long. “Maybe we should tell her.” It all feels selfish, like she's a bad mom just for thinking it. They’re her parents — it’s their job to protect her, not the other way around. But it’s painful to keep fighting, after so many years. “I wouldn’t have to worry about losing you like this. We could take her somewhere safe.”
“Annabeth… She’s 6. I don’t want her to have to carry that weight until it’s absolutely necessary.” This little girl is everything to him. He sees so much of himself in her, and every second they have to talk about the prophecy, it hurts him.
Annabeth stays silent; he’s right, even if she doesn’t want to say it out loud. And she hurts, too. So she nods — she never wanted to lie to her, ever. But this is too much to put on the shoulders of a child. One just as little as she was. She wishes someone would’ve considered that when she was young.

“Are you two coming up for lunch anytime soon?” Annabeth rolls her eyes, standing at the edge of the lake. “It’s been half an hour.”
Percy surfaces, Lyra right behind him, giggling profusely.
“Did Daddy say something funny?” She raises an eyebrow, glaring at Percy.
“Daddy talks to the fish.” It sounds more like fith. She smiles wide, a toothy grin showing off her missing front teeth.
“Great,” she stares right into his soul, trying not to let on the slight bit of amusement it brings her, “She thinks you’re crazy.”
A tenet of her limited attention span, Lyra starts playing with her powers, splashing about, seemingly not paying any attention to their conversation.
He protests, “She just figured out the bubble thing, I had to show her something new!”
“And does she understand them, Percy?”
His face falls. “Uh. No. I see your point,” he laughs. It seemed she hadn’t inherited that particular power from him. “She’s pretty amused by this, though.”
Tens of tiny blobs of water circle her, weaving around Percy, up into the air, and back into the lake.
“It took you a long time to be able to do stuff that precise,” Annabeth notes, wading into the water up to her ankles and handing him a sandwich from her bag.
“Yeah. It did.”

“How come you never told me about this?”
“Because it’s scary.”
“I can handle scary.”
Annabeth sighs, “I heard the Great Prophecy for the first time when I was your age.” It kept her awake with nightmares far too often, knowing she’d eventually be a part of it — which is why she’s so reluctant to tell these things to Lyra, despite knowing how important it is that she knows. “I spent two years waiting for a sign until I finally got one. He was annoying, and dense, and the son of my mother’s biggest rival. And then he was my friend — my best friend. Someone who was loyal to me no matter what. I wouldn’t change that for the world.” Not when it’s brought her here. “But we had to make a lot of hard decisions. And I—” She shakes her head. “I know you don’t completely understand.” Annabeth never intended her to. “I need you to know that it’s not always going to be easy.”

“I’m 11 now,” Lyra states, with an air of unparalleled confidence, “I can keep secrets.”
“Hey,” Percy says, patting her back, “We trust you. It’s just a big change.”
She crosses her arms. “I won’t tell anyone.”
“That also means you can’t use your powers,” Annabeth says, handing Lyra her lunchbox.
“I know.” You told me. Many times.
Annabeth kisses her cheek, pretending she doesn’t see her dramatically wipe her face off with the back of her hand mere seconds later. “Okay. I love you. Tell me all about it later.”
Percy walks her out the door, and down to the subway stop. They stand, and wait. “So, middle school. Kind of a big deal?” He sure thought so.
“I guess,” she shrugs. “I’m excited to make friends.” It’s the one thing that sucked about being homeschooled. She knows, as they’ve told her so many times, it was for her protection, because she never was able to completely control her powers as a kid. But the only kids she’s ever really known otherwise are other demigods; and what fleeting interactions she had with them while visiting Camp. And they weren’t like her, not really.
Percy reaches out his arms as the car doors open, beckoning her for a hug. She wraps her arms as far as they’ll reach around him, as tight as she can. So he holds her close against his chest for as long as he knows the doors will remain open, “You got this.”

“Keep your feet apart. Knees bent.” Annabeth instructs her, feet firmly planted in the grass, beckoning for Lyra to follow.
Lyra clutches the sword, an iron-clad grip Annabeth recognizes from when she was this age — still too young to fully understand the weight of what she was doing, but old enough to feel the fear that came with the inherent danger of every battle she fought. “Loosen your grip.” Lyra follows, feeling the handle bounce with her new stance. “There you go.”
“Now remember, be ready to move. Stay on the balls of your feet.” That got her last time. And it had plagued Annabeth many times — feeling frozen, for even with a plan, there were so many unpredictable variables within combat.
Lyra nods, and takes a tentative swing, blocked by Annabeth. She staggers back, preparing a counterattack. Her blade catches against Lyra’s before she even gets close. “Good. Nice block,” Annabeth says, directing Lyra’s sword away with her sheer strength. “Now try for a hit.”
“You’re too quick.” Lyra breathes heavily, clearly intensely focused and growing weary. She blocks again, against her advice.
“No, you’re doing great. Keep going.” Annabeth encourages her, gearing up to test her reflexes. “Find an opening.”
She almost takes Annabeth by surprise; going on the offensive with such short notice. Her swing aims low, and Annabeth has to think quick, readjusting her stance to block the incoming blow. “You’re getting really good at this.”
Lyra sighs, her sword swinging at her side. “Thanks.”

“Zeph! Lemme in!” Lyra’s voice sounds over the intercom, and he buzzes her up.
“Why is it always my place?” Zephyr asks, opening the door right as she’s about to knock.
“Our apartment is tiny,” Lyra shrugs, squeezing past him in the doorway. And we have a truly impressive stash of weaponry in the coat closet which I’d rather not have to explain.
“So. Graduation’s only a few weeks away.” he says. “Are you excited? For high school?”
“I don’t know. I guess.” It doesn’t seem like that big of a change. Same kinds of classrooms, cinderblock hallways; the usual cliques and groups. The same tendencies of teachers to constantly breathe down her neck about assignments and paying attention, despite her accommodations. She sinks into the couch, feeling the relief of taking her backpack off.
“That doesn’t seem very enthusiastic.”
“I just hate the drama. Did you see what they did to Jenna Thompson the other day?”
“Jenna hates you, Ly,” he laughs.
“Yeah, but that doesn’t mean she deserves to get gum stuck in her hair,” Lyra mumbles, hugging her knees into a ball. Sure, she’s a menace and has never said a single nice word to Lyra, but she doesn’t wish ill on her for it. Everyone’s got their own shit, bullies included, and she’s trying her best to ignore it. Plus, she already got what she deserved.
“She called you—”
Her head snaps up to stare at him. “I know what she called me, I don’t need to hear it from you too.”
“Sorry. I just… I don’t understand how you can…” he sighs, “It just makes me so angry I—”
“Let’s just. Talk about something else.” She takes a deep breath, shifting the topic. “How’d you do on your finals?”
“Pretty good. Got straight B’s. Bombed the English essay though. And you know I killed that science project. So yeah, average all around.”
“As if you would ever get anything less than an A+. How’s the tomato plants?” He’s always liked gardening. Especially to bring a cold, industrial apartment to life. And of course it’d earn him an A — he knew how to take care of them, even in such a cramped space.
“Just picked ‘em yesterday. You ever had homemade ketchup?”
Her eyes widen. “No. You better have some left!”
“Of course I do. Meanwhile, I’m guessing you aced everything—”
“Except math,” they say, at the same time, bursting into laughter.
“Yeah. You know me.”
“Sure do.” He grabs a plate from the kitchen, setting it down on the coffee table. “All homegrown. I present to you, gourmet french fries and ketchup.”
She tastes it. “That’s… amazing.”
“You know you only like me for the food.”
“You’re gonna be on some Top Chef shit, or something,” she chuckles, imagining it. “And not true!”
“Yeah, you’re gonna miss me this summer. But especially the food.”
“I wish you didn’t have to visit your mom all summer.”
Zeph sighs. “I know. But it’ll be over before you know it.”

“I can’t do this, Percy. I can’t keep pretending this is okay. It’s getting worse. They’re getting stronger. We can’t keep doing this.”
“Annabeth,” he sighs, and she can hear the sheer exhaustion in his voice. “We have to.”
“And what happens if we get seriously hurt?” I can’t lose you. Her body aches, scrapes and bruises staining a fair amount of her skin, even with the ambrosia. She feels defeated, and battered. And there’s only so much she can hide with long sleeves and pants. It’s been a week of fending off monsters everywhere she goes, sometimes without their help; it hurts them to see the marks on her body from fighting.
“Better us than her.”
She doesn’t disagree, but it’s more than that. She can’t lose us. “Percy, look at me.” He does. “You know what we have to do.”
He sighs, staring out the window to study the city skyline. “I just thought we had more time.”
“It’s longer than either of us had,” Annabeth reminds him.
Percy lets the concept of two more years sink in, and it hits him hard. Two more years of normalcy. Of not fighting for his life. “Okay. But... let her have her birthday.” It’s the least he can do when there’s so much anxiety centered around his own. She deserves a day for herself.
“Okay.” Annabeth echoes, quieter. “Come here?” He slides into bed and wraps his arms tightly around her; stubble pricking at her neck as he curls up closer. She fits so perfectly into his embrace, like the curves of her body were made to fit against him. Like he was made to hold her.
“She’ll be alright.” She has to be.

Zim-Zam, Goddamn, We’re Easy Company
Pairing : Joseph Liebgott x OC x George Luz
Summary : Andrew Marin knew that Airborne school would be hell, and he knew that he wouldn’t fit in, but there just happens to be two men there to make it a little more tolerable.

Part One if We Happy Few
Camp Toccoa
The sweat dripped down into Andrew’s eyes as he stood under the sun, in line with the rest of the men of Easy Company. He stood at attention as Lieutenant Sobel found anything he could on the men to get their Weekend Passes revoked. A Weekend Pass could mean anything to an enlistee, and Sobel was intent on ripping it away to “teach them a thing or two”. Like it earned Sobel the respect of his men. Andrew wouldn’t be the first to tell you that this tactic didn’t work.
It came to be Andrew’s turn for berating, and he was not excited.
“Name.”
“Andrew Marin, sir.”
“Private Marin.”
“Yes, sir.”
“Why are your boots covered in mud?”
“No excuse, sir.”
“Are you not ordered to keep everything clean?”
Andrew’s boots weren’t the only thing keeping him from godliness, but he wasn’t going to be the one to tell Sobel that. “I was, sir.”
“So why aren’t they clean, Private?”
“No excuse, sir.”
“You disobeyed direct orders, Private. I’d ought to write you up. Weekend Pass revoked.”
Sobel moved onto the next soldier and Andrew let out a breath he didn’t know he was holding. Andrew wasn’t too upset about losing his Weekend Pass. He didn’t have anywhere he wanted to go. His friends had already had theirs revoked, and those who hadn’t would inevitably lose them before the hour was out.
Some of the infractions the men had on them were absolutely ridiculous. They were singled out for having something that wasn’t contraband or because they grabbed the wrong canteen or something that wasn’t up to Sobel’s personal standards. If Sobel didn’t like it, you clearly weren’t fit to be a soldier.
“Name.”
“Liebgott, Joseph D., sir.”
Sobel reaches for Liebgott’s bayonet and examines it. “Rusty bayonet, Liebgott. You wanna kill Germans?”
Sobel knew that answer. Everyone wanted to kill the Germans. “Yes, sir.”
Sobel hits Liebgott over the head with his bayonet. “Not with this.”
Instead of returning the bayonet to Liebgott, Sobel held it up over his head to show the company. “I wouldn’t take this rusty piece of shit to war, and I will not take you to war I your condition. Now thanks to these men and their infractions, every man in the company who had a weekend pass has lost it. Change into your PT gear, we’re running Currahee.”
Currahee. Fucking Curahee. If there was ever a way to make a Company hate their CO, it was Currahee. Run up the three miles, run back down in the allotted time. You go over, you do it again, and again, and again until Sobel decides you’ve either had enough or he’s too disappointed in you to go on.
Andrew had to run Currahee twice in one night. He had tripped on the way up and screwed up his time, so Sobel had him run double. Worst night of Airborne School so far. His chest hurt like hell for days after that night, but he never let it show. He couldn’t. Not now.
“Marin!” a voice shouted from behind Andrew. He turned to see George Luz, a good friend and one of the best parts of Easy Company.
“Hey, Luz,” Andrew says with a grin and he pulls his shirt over his chest.
“Still have to wear that posture stuff?”
“Yeah.” Posture stuff. What an excellent lie.
Luz looked down at Andrew’s boots. “Muddy boots make a muddy soldier, Marin!” He said in the most Sobel-like voice he could manage. Luz was always a fan of impressions. “Cleanliness is next to godliness.”
“Tell that to the dirt on your M-1.”
The walk to Currahee was a humiliating one. The men of the other companies would almost taunt Easy as they walked up to the mountain. Andrew happened to be by Liebgott on this occasion.
“Oh, Easy Company. ‘Ey while you’re runnin’, don’t worry, we’ll take your dames to the movies for ya.”
Dog Company. Classic.
“Yeah, good, they need some female company,” Liebgott says. Andrew laughs at it.
“Pretty sure there’s only two of us that have really got any women,” Andrew tells Liebgott.
“Yeah? Wouldn’t doubt it.”
Sobel was unrelenting on Currahee. When Muck tripped Sobel shouted for him to not be helped. Of course, Malarkey and Gordon helped anyway, because that’s what you do when you’re at the very least a decent human being.
Andrew suspects he got up the mountain in 20 minutes. His lungs burned and the sweat in his eyes stung to high heaven but he kept going. He had to.

The hour upon Currahee became days on that godforsaken mountain. Those days became weeks. Soon enough, Andrew found himself in the mess hall across from Luz with a plate of spaghetti in front of him. Well, what looked like spaghetti.
“What do ya think, Luz?” Andrew asks. “Fine Italian cooking if I’ve ever seen it.”
Luz put on a big grin. “Perfecto!” He says in a silly Italian accent. “
“Not too loud!” Andrew laughs at him. “You don’t want Guanere to kill you.”
Before Luz can reply, Sobel’s familiar whistle blows and the man himself marches up into the mess hall.
“You’ve got to be shitting me,” Andrew hears Liebgott mutter. It’s almost funny. Almost.
“All lectures are canceled! Easy Company is running up Currahee! Move! Move! Move!”
Andrew almost threw up. He really didn’t think he would make it to the top of that mountain without hunching over and vomiting himself inside out.
It was worse when Sobel started yelling, right in his face.
“Marin, your chest hurt? You look pale, Private! You’re gonna be sick! Sick men do not make Paratroopers! Get your ass off this mountain and go home!”
It was almost an incentive to get up the mountain. To do it out of spite. To show Sobel that Andrew really did have it, to show that unlike Sobel, he wasn’t scared. He had seen fear in Sobel’s eyes once, a fear that his men would be better than him, Andrew knew that. He just had to show that they all were.
Then, from beside him, Luz pipes up. “We pull upon the risers…”
Just like that, the men of Easy Company began their chant.
“We fall upon the grass,
We never land upon our feet, we always hit our ass,
Highty tighty, Christ Almighty, who the hell are we?
Zim-Zam goddamn we’re the Airborne Infantry!
We pull upon the risers,
We fall upon the grass,
We never end upon our feet, we always hit our ass

The showers that night were surprisingly empty for Andrew. He stripped down for the first time in what felt like forever. Without the “posture stuff”, as Luz had so affectionately called it, it was like Andrew could breathe again. His muscles ached as he slipped under the hot water, relaxing as he felt he could be totally alone.
The soap going over his body was a treat for Andrew, getting the caked dirt off his hands and the strange spaghetti sauce that someone had coughed up off of his back and the dried salt from his sweat off of his arms was a blessing.
Spaghetti. Andrew wondered if he could ever eat it again without wanting to vomit. He wondered if he could eat any food from the mess hall without thinking about that goddamned mess of spaghetti.
A few minutes under the spray of water was enough for Andrew to lose himself in the moment, to actually think about himself for once. He hadn’t written a letter to his parents except for the first week he was there, informing them of where he was and what he’d be doing. They weren’t too keen on the idea of him being in the military, jumping out of planes no less, but Andrew didn’t let that stop him. He’d gotten one letter from his brother, Albert, out in Chicago. It wasn’t all good news, as it was mainly about what was going on with him and his wife. The general outlook wasn’t great. His wife had cheated on him and he only found out when their daughter didn’t look like him at all. It was funny, but this was his Al, who was always insecure about everything, so it wasn’t supposed to be funny.
Al found out because him and his wife are very dark-haired. The baby was a ginger.
Andrew thought about how his plan didn’t really line up with his brother’s. Al was a real stand-up guy, who always knew what to say and what he wanted to do. Despite his insecurities, he fit in, he blended with the crowd. He moved out to Chicago, started a business, married a girl and got everything he wanted until very recently.
Andrew stuck out like a sore thumb. Everyone seemed to know there was something off about him back home. He didn’t know what he wanted to do with his life. He didn’t think he would make it that far. All he knew is that he didn’t want to be stuck with his parents forever. So, when the war started, he knew what he needed to do. It’s good pay, it’s respectable, he’s fighting for something he believes in. It’s good and he somehow manages to fit in with the guys, something he’s never been able to do.
Andrew gets out of the shower before anyone would’ve even realized he was there. He slipped his clothes back on, tied up his boots, but stopped in front of the mirror as he passed it. He almost couldn’t recognize himself. He’s not really sure if he wanted to.
His hair had become lighter from the sun and the freckles on his face began to become more prominent. He was still scrawny but he didn’t look like the wind could push him over anymore. His hands were now scuffed and his fingers became calloused, like the rest of the men’s. He hadn’t realized how hardened he had become. He supposed that all the men have become like this. Some of them were already hard, like Guanere and Martin. Others had hardened, like Winters. But there were some who Andrew couldn’t picture like that.
Like Luz. Luz wasn’t soft. Luz wasn’t hard. He was silly. He did impressions. He didn’t let Sobel get under his skin. He made fun of the Lieutenant. He was determined to get past Sobel and do what he wanted. He made jokes with Andrew.
Or Liebgott. Liebgott was more sarcastic but he had a perfect sense of humor. He was hard, but he had a real sense of humanity. He was always genuine, but always sassy. Liebgott, like Andrew, kind of stuck out. With his being Jewish and Andrew being Andrew, it made sense that two of them were good friends.
Luz and Liebgott. Liebgott and Luz. Andrew chuckled to himself. The two men he couldn’t really define in Easy Company and they both had ‘L’ names. Andrew stopped where he was. Luz and Liebgott. Thinking of the two made Andrew feel different. It wasn’t like that fun feeling around Muck and Penkala or that brotherly feeling around Bull and Martin. It was different. Safe. Comforting. It was nice.
Andrew knew it wouldn’t be good for him, but at least it was nice.
The barracks were quiet that night. All of the men were sore and didn’t want to deal with more than they had to. When Andrew had gotten back, Luz was fast asleep and most of the men were going in the same direction. Andrew found himself in his bed before long, a book in one hand and the other tucked up under his head. He wasn’t sure what time he fell asleep that night, but he knows that he didn’t get very far into chapter three.
