Barry Vitcov is a retired educator having spent 45 years as a middle school English teacher, school administrator, leadership coach, and adjunct university professor. He lives in Ashland, Oregon with his wife and exceptionally brilliant standard poodle. He has had fiction and poetry published in EAP: The Magazine, Literary Yard, Scarlet Leaf Review, Vita Brevis, Finding the Birds, Cobra Lily, and The Drabble. Finishing Line Press published two of his books, a poetry collection Where I Live Some of the Time (2021) and a collection of short stories The Wilbur Stories & More (2022).

Barry Vitcov’s poems, collected here as Structures, give old and established poetic forms a fresh voice, at times playful, with Barry’s standard poodle making several appearances, but in other poems soberly metaphoric, as inOur Ukraine. His casual, conversational language takes any of the expected stiffness out of the formal structures; rhyme and meter are unforced, and repeated lines in the villanelles and triolets read as emphasis, not redundancy, like the language of an earnest speaker. The collection is cleverly organized as well—notice the haibun titled One Sentence Poem preceding the section of one-sentence poems, and the tightly constructed and humorous triolet, Plural of Haiku, leading into the final section, a generous plurality of haiku. I was preparing to deploy to Iraq more than a decade ago when I was introduced to one of my fellow soldiers friends. We talked on Facebook for the three months of training and we hit it off extremely well. She flew down for the couple of days that we had for leave right before we deployed. One day in particular, which this poem is about, we took a taxi and she had the window partially down and the wind was whipping her hair and she had the most peaceful smile I have ever seen. I have a picture of that moment(not the one in the post). . Literary notes: I wrote this in response to an event run by @wt.write.club to use a song for inspiration. I chose A cover of La vie en rose by @danielaandrade and adapted the form of the lyrics to fit my needs. My Couch

I like to sit on my couch at the end of a long day.

The beige stripes on the cushions

make me feel relaxed in my resting

place. The stain on the backside of

the left cushion reminds me of my

little brother and how much he

enjoys his red Kool-Aid.  I put my

feet up and lean against the arm,

I pull my orange fuzzy blanket

up to my chin and then doze off

for just a minute or two before I

remember all the things I have

to do. In the evenings, especially

Saturday nights, I curl up in the

corner and turn off all the lights.

When I am ready with theatre

butter popcorn by my side I travel

through space, under the sea, and

wherever else I please. My

couch is a lover, but better than

any human could be. It will never

leave me or tell me to go away.

It is always there for me, at the

end of a long day, arms wide open inviting me in.
