I was reading an article from CNN about journalists in Gaza (link) and this particular paragraph stuck out to me...
Tumblr media
I was initially a journalism major in college so I understand the background of why an organization like CNN would require this style of reporting (i.e. "both sides" representism). However, these inserts of Isreali "viewpoints" that have been shown to be barefaced lies in an article about Gazan journalists risking their lives is just piss-poor optics.
If anyone wonders why people have lost faith in traditional media sources, this is a perfect example. In an article centering Palestinian voices, the organization still requires that Israeli talking points be linked as well and often, in the same paragraph. It reads like: 'here's a quote about a personal lived experience of genocide but nah uh, here's isreali propaganda claiming they are lying and bc they are an ally, they should be believed'. It's American/Western exceptionalism at its finest because "why should we believe a Palestinian, they aren't paragons of truth and justice like we are?"
I don't know if I quite explained myself like I wanted but this particular article just made me so angry that CNN and other Western media were once considered 'trustworthy' sources of information and now are parroting isreali lies. AND telling their readers that Palestinian voices on the ground telling first-hand information are not "good enough" sources of information.

idk with all the discourse about who's allowed to sing and who not, I feel like a lot of people forgot why humans sing in the first place, where singing comes from culturally...
Especially the Thai culture and fandom reminded me of that you do not have to be a perfect singer to have fun with each other. Singing is originally a fun or emotional activity to share vibes with your group, village, tell stories. (side note: the pagan folk genre is basically also a good witness of the past in that regard)
The whole Thai actor fan meeting and concert habit seems to be a very Thai culture thing just mixed with pop culture and capitalism.
Observing the Thai folks I see at my local yearly Thai festival, they are very similar. They still party hard even if the singer is not that good. They constantly go to the stage to slip the singers some money or gifts, request them to sing certain songs.

PJO & Palestine pt. 2
This is going to unpack some bullshit I've seen about Rick Riordan. For pt. 1 about why "boycotting Disney" is not actually the thing you need to be doing right now, go here.
Imma try to keep it brief this time <3
In addition to the misleading info about Disney as a boycott target, I've seen some ridiculously facile takes about boycotting the show because of Rick Riordan.
As far as I can tell, the drama stems mostly from this blog post, where he shares his (fairly tepid but still principled) view of Palestine and Israel.
Here are some key takeaways:
The blog post is from Oct 17, 2023. Only ten days into the genocide, and with plenty of attention still lingering on Oct 7 worldwide. As far as I know, he hasn't shared any updated reactions
Should he? Maybe. Here's what he has to say about it in the blog post:
Tumblr media
He goes on to talk about having readers in both Israel & Palestine:
Tumblr media
Maybe you think he should pick a side. Maybe you're sick of both-sideism and if you see one more media take equating Israeli grief to Palestinian grief during a motherfucking genocide you will launch yourself into the sun. Rick goes on:
Tumblr media
I don't know what you were expecting from a children's author whose overarching theme is, "You might think you know who the monsters are, but be careful; black-and-white thinking like that reduces us all."
[SPOILERS for non book readers] In PJO, Percy ultimately agrees with Luke that the system is unjust and can't remain as it is. Luke's willingness to sacrifice the lives of their friends is the thing he can't support.
The series deeply explores questions of monsters vs. victims, how our circumstances shape us, institutional injustice...
I get the anger when people, especially celebrities and the media, use calls for nuance to avoid taking a stand. I don't think it's accurate to say that's what's happening here.
Tumblr media
I said I'd keep this short and I've obviously failed, so let's get to the most damning part of Rick's blog post:
Tumblr media
This is what has people calling him a Zionist. And do I kinda hate it? Yeah, I do. That line "security and support" is propaganda that Israel has spent 75+ years feeding into the global media machine. I also hate that the overwhelmingly pathetic response of most public figures has conditioned me to be impressed by breadcrumbs like 'Palestine should also be secure and supported and free.'
So there you have it. Rick's opinions from 10 days into what has become a 100+ day genocide.
Maybe this all sounds unforgivably centrist to you, and that's your right. You don't have to engage with his stories. Approaching content with an eye to the author's real positions and attitudes is a healthy way to interpret media critically.
However, I'd really like people to remember two things:
This is not a JKR situation. Watching the show does not give money to someone who actively uses their platform to spread hate.
If this is about your own media purity, I have bad news for you. Literally none of your faves are perfect, and neither are you. Trying to only interact with un-cancellable media is futile, discourse-killing, and self-absorbed at a time when there are more important things we should be doing.
Ultimately, the choice of whether to engage with content from someone whose views you don't agree with is your own. You get to decide where to draw that line.
I, personally, can respect a lot of what Rick says here. He's a children's author using his platform to speak to children. He has his eye on the long game. He still emphatically argues for a free Palestine.
There have been other betrayals from other artists that I couldn't tolerate. It's a personal choice.
So please, stop shaming people for watching this silly little show. Stop trying to police how others engage with media that isn't hurting anyone.
There's work to be done.

Toontown X Puzzlevision SMG4 (all i have are vauge ideas so far)
in the early days of C.O.G.S Inc: there was a 6th department ran by a cog named Puzzles and his department was all about TV programming. Puzzles was close with the other cog bosses, despite not being nearly as tall as most of them (at least, a without his special vehicle which is big actor/director chair) once he was commissioned by the VP to create a son for him. Puzzles liked making shows, but he grew tired of the same old and fairly unpopular cog shows, he wanted something more entertaining and dare he say "fun" to make, to make a perfect show for everyone. one night while exploring outside of cog territory. he quite literally bumps into a toon. at this point in time neither toon nor cog have heard of each other. but after getting to know this (as of now unnamed) toon. at one-point Puzzles suggested if they could privately make a cartoon with them, to which the toon happily agreed to. when they released their show, it was the best thing Puzzles put out in years, it even just about to get 5 stars. that is, until the chairman caught-on to what was happening. he called Puzzles and his friend to his office to explain themselves. when they got to the part where they explained who/what the toon was and where she lived. the Chairman got the bright idea to harvest this toon's town of its resources. Puzzles and the toon rejected his idea. but the chairman wasn't going to take no for an answer and a big confrontation took place, puzzles tried to explain to his boss that if one toon could improve his ratings, imagine what teamwork between toons and cogs could do. the chairman retorted that he got better ratings because he had help! by himself? he will never make the perfect show. that was the last thing puzzles heard before the room fell apart. causing the toon & Puzzles to go unconscious. The chairman left just before it all fell apart, when he came back, he promptly decided to shut down the TV department, lock away the toon and Puzzles, separately. and move forward with his plans to harvest Toontown. and that's where it ended, until now. for one reason or another, puzzles reactivated and left the storage room he was in undetected. Instead of repairing his old head, he completely cut it off in favor of using one of his old TVs for a head. it became clear Mr. Puzzles was not the cog he was before. with a more screws lose in his head and mind. he is more determined than ever to create the perfect show and get 5 stars. he's gonna use the thing that almost got him 5 stars last time. toons. he will set up genre themed adventures for them to go on. (👁🤠🕴) then he will take over C.O.G.S forcing unimposing cogs to work for him backstage and locking up any cogs who DO appose. then he will trap all the toons in Toontown in his world to play in his shows. all for his streaming service. and once he gets 5 stars, he'll make sure EVERYONE can join the fun :)
there are a few cogs who are planning to stop him. like Misty, Chip, Cathal, Thomas, Buck & Dave. hopefully they'll succeed

Dealing with bands’ publicists is so funny. They’ll send one of their corporate-y messages. I’ll bristle and respond with a polite version of ‘I don’t work for you, bitch’ (we’re volunteers) and then the next message will immediately be an effusively friendly and apologetic email from the artist themselves. I am always amazed me what different planets artists and agents live on lmao

insane (predicable) to me that you could literally have the most sanitized radio cut version of intrusive thoughts represented into a character and people would still be immensely bothered by it. that you could give the insanely clear cut "your thoughts are not a precursor to your actions, avoiding them doesn't help anything, go to bed" and in some spaces just straight-up mentioning the representative character wasn't allowed. bc yeah a lot of intrusive thoughts wouldn't pass youtube community guidelines. when, for the sake of debate, someone watered them down to the same energy as poop jokes and a "family feud insane moments" video, some bitches STILL took issue with that shit and made it everyone's problem. and everyone around them fully endorsed it, used the designated trigger tag while simultaneously putting their fanart in the actual "intrusive thoughts" tag. and they STILL claimed that they supported mental health and its discussion likeeeeeee

Constantly trapped between I can’t wait to live away from my family and spend more time alone because I feel like my thoughts will have time to settle and I will lose my mind if I live alone because I am starting to lose a sense of self this week simply because two of my friends are away and I don’t speak to anyone much in school.
#noggin time#I also cannot stand the fact that people I know follow me online or people I respect even#because I have a constant nagging feeling I’m completely and utterly embarrassing I see people posting abt things in their life and like#venting or whatever and I could never do that I think bc so many people follow me that I see face to face#I mean I’m doing this right now but tumblr is it’s own beast I have like one person I know irl on here I think#also it’s not like I have no friends I still talk to teachers and other people but it’s my best friend who I meet every morning and my new#friend I made this year who is in all the same free periods as me and also likes talking about tv shows so it’s like two people I talktomost#if this were a therapy session which it now is I would trace back my feeling of pure unfiltered embarrassment at simply being online back to#when I used framecast when I was like 9 and I drew a character inspired by someone’s oc and they vague posted quite civil abt it like please#don’t copy my ocs guys and I cried about it for hours and hours and I’ve never been the same since not to sound dramatic but it’s true#I delete Instagram every 3 days because it starts to make me feel physically unwell and then I re-download it because I miss everyone#I didnr consider i might have some sort of mental issues other than autism until recently because I just convinced myself this isn’t a prope#r issue I should just get over it but at this point it’s violently affecting my moods when I’m not immediately talking to anyone
