I apologize if this is invasive, but since I've seen you posting about your upcoming operation (congrats!) I was wondering if there was a pre-op class or resources provided to you on prepping your space for recovery? Between teaching ortho pre-op classes and helping my mom recover from a mastectomy and a DIEP flap breast reconstruction, my brain went about a billion directions (most critically: "damn, hope the toilet paper isn't located on the wall behind the toilet")

hokay so, i was given a pretty basic post-op care packet at my pre-op appointment, but what's really driving my recovery plans are the 4mos i've spent mainlining r/topsurgery. i've read so many personal accounts that i reckon i'm as prepared as i possibly could be—BUT. i can't know everything. what tips have you got, if you don't mind sharing?

20. Have you noticed any patterns in your fics? Words/expressions that appear a lot, themes, common settings, etc?

Oh my God, all the time. I've noticed expressions and phrases I reuse or am fond of constantly. Lots of recurring themes across the board, too. I couldn't tell you right now what they are, but I know they're there!

40. If someone were to make fanart of your work, what fic or scene would you hope to see?

Oh, that's a tough one. I would probably love to see something from Litost or Beasts of the Hill. One scene that sticks out to me in particular, though, is Eyes Closed, where Sauron and Galadriel are both brought before Morgoth's throne and Morgoth throws her necklace down on the ground near their feet. I think that one would be amazing in art form.

56. What’s something about your writing that you pride yourself on?

How complex it is. If I'm not writing a fun piece, I'm writing a complex piece with a lot of moving parts to it. I've grown a lot as a writer, and I think my eye for a strong plot is my biggest strength now, and I am very proud of how I can craft one quite thoroughly. Thank you so much for this question because I needed to remind myself of this! ❤️

maybe i like pleasure pain by tothewillofthepeople (@kvothes). After the perfect darkness of the Empty, Cas finds the world a little…overwhelming. Dean tries to help. Post 15x18, Cas is both touch starved and touch sensitive, and the sensory overload of the world can be a bit too much. He craves Dean's touch, but resists asking for it. A really beautifully written, metaphor laden examination of chronic pain, disability, trauma and the physicality of the body and nebulous presence of mind. All wrapped up in an abundance of love and devotion. Absolutely gorgeous.

Prayer to a False God by K_A_Mindin (@katerinaalianovamindin, art by @gaytedlasso for @spnbangbang) It’s been two years stuck in the Empty, where the Shadow showed him his worst mistakes over and over again. Then he's brought back, to Jack and to Dean, and silence continues to rein, the unspoken acknowledgement of the confession lingering in the air...until Cas decides he needs to stop letting silence rule. Alongside the emotional pull of this thread, the D/S dynamics which grant Dean the permission to speak his truths, through prayer, and through physical release, are a joy to behold.

i like your shoelaces (thanks! i stole them from the president) by @you-cant-spell-subtext-without is a brilliantly funny take on Misha's "Dean is a custodian in a fast food restaurant. Castiel is the President of the United States" fic prompt from a convention, told through the narrative hook of a Cinderella story. Delightfully tongue in cheek, and laugh out loud, this is currently a wip but a must read to bring joy to your inbox each update.

FROTUS by kathscradle takes the very same prompt but approaches it in a very well executed slowburn that says ok but seriously what if? My favourite thing about this fic is the importance of family, Cas being the widowed single parent of Jack and Claire, and Dean stepping up in his new role as step-Dad. Add in the slowburn relationship unfolding through long distance hyper-monitored correspondence, and all the national security matters at hand, this longfic gave my The West Wing/Scandal/Destiel brain a great big hug.

birthday candles by rhinestoneangels (almondrose/@pinknatural) is a super cute, ever so charming Dean's birthday ficlet in which Castiel's sister Anna drags him to a birthday party for a friend of hers who he has never met. He googles what to bring to a birthday party and settles on baking cookies...one fire later and fortunately, the firefighter who shows up to save Castiel from himself is very dreamy, and what a coincidence! It's his birthday, too….

I've also fallen down a rabbit warren of destiel and spn poetry, and I really really love this one by @whatladybird and this one by @eyelinerdean, @donestiel's incredible poetry gif edit series and I'm very excited to keep reading more on the @spnpoetryrenaissance blog. Has anyone seen a 2024 prompt list? Asking for reasons.

I ugly cry every time I read this fic. It is a run of Cas and Dean’s relationship in seasons 13-15 and has Dean making a friend and it hurts but also it’s so good. Maybe my favorite Sam line of any fic comes from this fic ("If he thinks what you two do is friendship, then I must just be some guy he happens to speak to sometimes.”)

Dean gets tattoos, and as he does, he tells the tattoo artist his life story. This is a post-15x19 fic told from an outside perspective and it is so well-done

Listen tbh this list could be dominated by sobsicles and so I am showing restraint by only including three of their works. Their Dean characterization is everything to me and this fic really highlights Dean growing to understand himself better when given the freedom to

I love a work that explores pre-series Dean, and this one is great. Basically, think what-if later seasons Cas and pre-series Dean met (Strandlines by aeli_kindara is another good example of this premise, but in Strandlines, it is pre-series Cas as well as pre-series Dean).

On a similar note, psalm 40:2 is a great pre-series Dean, future-Cas fic. I am a bi Dean believer but this fic did sway me toward the gay Dean camp because it’s simply so good.

Dean fixing his relationship with Jack? You got it. Dean trying to work through losing Cas? Yep. Dean getting Cas back by being stubborn? It’s there.

Who You Gonna Call? by saintedcastiel

Dean has a ghost following him around as he tries to start a life post-series, and for a while, he can’t figure out what’s happening. I love nothing more than Dean telling people he and Cas were married because he doesn’t know how else to explain and this fic delivers so hard

On a different note, this is one of my favorite Claire fics. It looks at Claire’s relationship with Cas and the impossibility of it, and it’s so artfully done.

Bus Loop Madness by batz_in_blue

Literally just a “what if everyone lived, Jack was a toddler, and they all picked him up from school?” AU. I audibly laughed while reading this, and it’s an essential pick-me-up from the heavier fics.

More of my favorite sobsicles fics include: gorging myself on you, still can’t get full (insatiable), and he’s back (with a mind of his own), six hundred sundays (and many more), oh sooner or later it all comes down to faith, things happen (they do, they do, and they do), according to all known laws of life, and profoundly bonded (by law)

Also, honorable mentions to Ninety One Whiskey, which is such a good fic, and Make a Believer Outta Me, which is a Hocus Pocus AU that is honestly just a fun time.

boy oh BOY do i have twiyor fic recs !!!! it's like basically all i read LMAO and i am always on a hunt for more. i feel like i have read through a good chunk of what's on ao3 and i still feel starved. there's always my bookmarks you can sift through for twiyor fics, but for some more curated recommendations (and this is not gonna include all the ones i've lost my mind over, that's far too many, this is just what i can remember off the top of my head):

When I say classic, I mean classic. Fairly certain this masterpiece was one of the first fics I read in the fandom, and in preparation of writing this rec I decided to bask in its beauty another time. The story is one of the first to chart Galadriel and Sauron after Eregion visiting each other in their dreams for some seriously smoldering smut and angst. As the ages of Middle-earth pass, Galadriel grows in both power and wisdom, retreating into Lothlorien and herself. I don’t want to add too much more—just tell you to go experience this gem yourself. It’s beautifully written, achingly sad, and one I—and you—will return to time and again.

The Complete But Never Forgotten Masterpiece: Fabricated by @frotu

What you need to know going in:

Oo, I love this fic! I feel like I stumbled across it by chance and was in love immediately. The premise grabs you straight away: Galadriel and Sauron rule Pelargir not-so-happily together, and when Sauron overhears a few subjects gossiping over their lack of an heir, he impresses on her the need for them to keep up appearances with a few recurring nighttime visits. The resulting arrangement creates this tentative, tantalizing trickle of a relationship that builds so satisfyingly well, and tugs at the heartstrings in a sighing, swoon-worthy way.

The WIP That Will Wreck You (In the Best Way): with hands as gentle as rain, i shall strangle him by @bad-surprise

What you need to know going in:

Oooooof, this story. I shiver just thinking about it! From trepidation and a little bit of terror and just how freaking terrific it is. The premise: Sauron goes full Annatar, Lord of Gifts, in a bid to try and entice Galadriel to reconsider his proposal after leaving Eregion—and each gift he gives her is more unsettling than the one before it. Sauron is delightfully disturbing in this while still being captivating and very much enthralled with Galadriel, who, however terrified, can’t shake him, either. The tension’s at an all-time high in this WIP and I can’t wait to see where it goes next.

The Can’t Stop Consuming No Matter What Time It Is Fic: I could be your king by @cliffdivingsblog

What you need to know going in:

Another favorite WIP that when I get an update in my inbox, I rush to finish whatever I’m doing and read ASAP. A season 1 retelling that diverges from canon in some really unique ways, be ready for glimpses into a redemption-seeking Sauron (in his own limited way) an always-charging forward Galadriel, dreamlike flashbacks into Sauron’s past (Melkor is a real standout amongst the Valar in this, but the characterization of everyone is top-tier), and insanely scintillating smut. To just name a few of the things that make this fic totally binge-worthy.

For the first Sauron Rec Sunday...may I introduce my favorite fanfic of all time:

Rehab by @frotu

From absolute crack!fic to heart-warming enemies-to-friends and Sauron redemption (sort of), this fic takes you on quite the ride. This story makes me laugh until I cry, and also makes me just cry. It also has some of the most exquisite characterization for Sauron that I have ever seen. I will also never ever be able to watch or read the Haldir scenes in the movies or books the same way ever again.

Bonus: I am also in the process of turning this fic into a fully-casted audio fic (with Yours Truly voicing Sauron) on my website Audio Fanfiction Library. We've got 25 chapters uploaded and continue to update on a (fairly) regular basis.

The coppery tang of his blood coated her tongue as she kissed that mouth. It stunned her, the way his tongue slipped so quickly between her teeth, tangling its tip with her own, sharing the taste of her violence, the flavor of her power over him.

2. Do you read/reread your own fics?

Listen I have a hate/love relationship with my own writing so most of the time it's actually painful for me to reread it outside proofreading , but i force myself to (mostly bc i tend to forget what I wrote) and i'm like wow this caters exactly to my own tastes, amazing, and then im shocked when the author (me) has not updated yet.

6. Are there any fics from others you reread all the time?

For our common otp: omg yes, without any surprise I think im already on my 3rd reread of E's entire serie, mostly because im connecting DOTS hehe. I love Frotu's A Portion of Thyself it's one of my fav comfort fics. I just wanna squish their Mairon.

Another one i recently added back on the Must reread List is Son of the Suns, an anakin centric sw AU i loved to pieces a few years back.

16. At what point in the process do you come up with titles?

At the very beginning, even before writing the chapters. I usually come up with them during the outlining because there's a logical continuation behind them.

18. What's one of your favorite lines you've written in a fic?

Ú calo is my less popular fic when ironically i believe it's my best poetic work, there's this paragraph i just really love. Im putting the french version too because it's actually even better than the english.

From her words he is born anew, like a parched man drinking from her light, feasting on her storm. What I Need - i love hospital AUs and i think this is my favorite. cas is a surgeon and dean is the only surgery tech he's willing to work with.

Thank you kind Anon, I'm glad that you took it that way because I definitely did not want to imply anything other than that. But if there are people who are going to look at my post and think of Humbert Humbert, that to me is icks and something I absolutely don't want. Creepy as in obsessing with his niece's hair, yes - but creepy as in pervy uncle, no. Does the word creepy imply the latter as well as the former? I guess it would to at least some readers. In Frotu's comic, it was intended as funny and cute, and the joke worked with the style. Since it doesn't come across as cute with my style, I feel better just dropping the caption and avoiding misunderstandings. But thanks, Anon. I feel better knowing that there are those who took that caption as I meant it. I'll leave the Unfinished Tales quote because that's key to the interpretation of the art.

love your fic recommends. what are you reading right now?

Ohh thanks anon, I’m glad you enjoy them as much as I do making them.

I’m currently waiting on 27 fics. May seem like a lot, but somehow I stumble upon fics that only get updated once a month or even once couple of months. So most of my time is spent just waiting on them, rather than reading tbh. Yeah… it’s frustrating at times, especially if the fic is magnificently written, so sometimes I find myself repeatedly checking for an update day and night. My life is a mess alright :D

However I’ll tease ya (cause I’m going to do another fic recommendation list) and give you some of my faves I’m currently waiting on to be updated

- renegade by tricia_16 (this author is my old time favourite, all of their fics are gems. And this fic is is gold too)

- FROTUS by kathscradle (Misha prompt from that panel, where Cas is president and Dean is a custodian/restaurant owner :D. Just an amazing fic with lots and lots of captivating writing)

- creatures of light by thanks_tacos (a/b/o fic which has some of the best angsty story line I’ve read recently, just love it. Sadly it rarely gets updated, but when they do, ya know you are getting the another well crafted chapter)
