X-Men: The Dark Phoenix Saga

So, having just finished re-reading The Dark Phoenix Saga, all I can say is Fuck Chris Clairmont and John Byrne for what they did to Jean Grey, and fuck Jim Shooter in particular for the editorial edict that demanded Jean Grey die.

Especially fuck the fact that NO ONE ever seems to take into account what the Hellfire Club did Jean in this story. Mastermind spends issues violating and twisting Jean's mind, stripping away her morality, conditioning her to enjoy cruelty and brutality.

Essentially, rewriting her entire personality into "evil" mode, while stripping away her self restraint. Then, of course, instead of Jean being allowed to heal, being allowed to recover from the way she was traumatized and violated, she get all the blame for what happened.

I'm just going to say it, loud and clear. Jean wasn't responsible for what happened to the D'Bari, or any of the other things Dark Phoenix did. If you want someone to blame, Look at Mastermind, Emma Frost, and the rest of the Hellfire Inner Circle.

The fact that Clairmont, Bryne and Shooter all put the blame squarely on Jean and the old "Power Corrupts" BS leaves me absolutely enraged, every time I read the story. I end up wanting to punch something.

And the Adaptations of the Dark Phoenix Saga in the live action movies are even worse. They both skip over what was done to Jean. They both put it on Prof. X, who, admittedly, is an absolute ass through all of Dark Phoenix.

But by removing what was done to Jean, they just turn the whole story into "woman can't handle power", which is it's own flavor of bullshit. And turning the D'Bari into the villains in X-Men: Dark Phoenix… WTF? Just WTF? God, the victim blaming…

Rewatching the first few episodes of fhjy because i guess i have nothing better to do and the way you can see how kibblespilly was supposed to be a counter to riz is so fucking funny. Its all there from the very beginning- the attitude, the tactics, the way she interacts with the party and everything- this is supposed to be riz's counterpart to run against him for student body president and have a terrible battle of wits and barbs

But in a twist that is perhaps THE most befitting to her ideal story of running against the boy she chose to be her antagonist, the intrepid heroes just straight up not taking the bait resulting in her instead having to go toe to toe against her idealized perfect rival's aggressive near-flunkie unsubtle chaotic friend is SO FUNNY.

Like I know some people are disappointed we dont get the riz vs kipperlily presidential whatever, I know it doesnt make tons of sense in that specific narrative way. But the fucking hilarious meta that even this didnt go her way is so funny. Because instead of rogue sneaking and behind the shadows plays and spy vs spy shit, we have just outward schoolyard taunts and shit like kristen exploding and jumping over the school and the exact kind of play that baits kipperlily into rage every single time and its so fucking funny. Kristen runs naked through the school and does party stunts and is STILL BEATING HER. She even clearly constructed her party to mirror the bad kids perfectly and craft each of them their own nemesis/counterpart and for the most part it like kind of worked EXCEPT FOR HER.

It must drive her fucking crazy that her cute little plot of rogue vs rogue didnt pan out at fucking all despite ALL the signs pointing to that making the most sense. This was something she just couldnt predict, couldnt mastermind. She got up onto that metaphorical stage for a debate and instead was met with a clowning act. Its so funny. I love fantasy high. Nothing you could have done would have changed this, fourdogs. You never had any power at all.

the geoff retcon is just so poorly done in so many ways. when i think abt it i just rly do have to roll my eyes because it wouldn't even be that hard to be like "actually, paul westfield was duped by agenda under orders from the contessa" and have that as the explanation for the introduction of luthor dna instead of paul westfield's, if you MUST include it. like that way it doesn't blatantly contradict the entire luthor plotline with mae in reign of the supermen, and it could've been a reveal to luthor himself, too. that couldve been fascinating ESPECIALLY in the context of lex having baby lena in that era, until the y2k event.

but fuckign. why do that when we can directly contradict kon's entire origin story which explicitly states he escaped before they were able to put control codes in his head. and when we can also just completely dismiss the ethics of "they [wanted to] put control codes in his head" in favor of "what if... some genes... make you BAD..." which is just very thinly veiled eugenics that the narrative entertains, for some reason. frankly, imo, lex was far more interesting as a character in every plot other than this, because he became so one-dimensionally evil in a very boring stock "manipulative" way. and we didn't even get a single mention of lena in all of his "my son" bullshit. using the contessa wouldve been such an easy and perfect way to tie it all together!!!! but sure. why do anything like that, right geoff.
