Can i get ghouls with a newly fallen angel? Preferably the older ones?
I took this as an opportunity to do Era I ghouls, as they never get love! Plus they are technically the oldest/wisest ghouls of their element and actually REMEMBER a time where angels were more of an active threat. Hope you enjoy!
GN Reader
Fallen Angel Reader
***TRIGGER WARNINGS: Mentions of battles, mentions of violence, hostility towards reader, mentions of death, Heaven vs Hell casualties
Era I (The Leader) Ghouls and a newly fallen Angel Reader
Fallen angels are rare but considered a grand occasion in the Ministry. You were recruited so fast to be among the ranks! The Emeritus bloodline always eager for angels that have truly awoken to their full potential. You were nursed back to full health after your fall from Grace. Learning to inhabit a more mortal form without the divine. And many siblings in the Clergy were eager to have you. You were grateful to be welcomed so quickly. But your new home doesn’t come without it’s problems…
You find the hardest transition was with ghouls. Angels and Ghouls being natural enemies with countless battles. So you were discussed with the ghoulish leadership before you had a chance to come near any ghouls. And the council of them had their own opinions.
Alpha: The fire leader is a bit smug at seeing you. Nothing personal, but he likes watching angels get humbled and hope you enjoyed ‘the fall.’ But since you are here, if you pledge yourself to the Emeritus bloodline and prove yourself worthy- why shouldn’t you be allowed to join? Alpha is going to want to test you, of course. He’s going to want to be in charge of all the tests to make sure you are as loyal as you say you are. In the future, he ends up being the most friendly and welcoming to you after you’ve proven yourself.
Omega: Has the hardest time accepting you, believe it or not. Quintessence ghouls have the hardest times when it comes to angels, and are often the first attacked and slaughtered when it comes to battles of the divine. This is because Quintessence is actually the universe’s most shared element in all beings. Accept when angels use it they morph it to be ‘divine’ and when ghouls nurture it it’s lovingly just the ‘Aether’. Angels and Quintessence ghouls are two sides of a coin, and it makes them deadly to each other. Omega has a lot of trouble believing you are truly fallen and not just some sleeper agent ready to wipe out the Ministry. He believes you need to be sacrificed to Lucifer if you truly want to be useful. Nothing personal, but it totally is…
Gamma: Out of all the old ghouls, Gamma is the most reverent of your position. He does not accept you blindly, but knows your presence is a sign of his faith. Angels don’t just magically fall into the Ministry when they are dropped from Grace. He is sure Lucifer brought you to them; whether as a test to YOU or THEM he isn’t quite sure. It’s his insistence that no one make any hasty decisions and consult with the Sigma ghoul…. You are grateful down the line when you realize Gamma’s wisdom and level headed-ness probably saved your life.
Delta: He is openly hostile towards you if you get too close to him, but tolerates your presence otherwise. He was summoned to earth centuries ago to protect both the ruling Papa and the archives of Demonic knowledge. So he’s had to put down a few angels in his time! This is Ministry politics and Delta is only interested in making sure the ghoul population is safe. If you are sincere then you can stay… but he makes it very well known he’ll rip what’s left of your wings off if you harm any ghoul. Like Alpha, he will be satisfied when you under go initiation and complete your tests. He won’t acknowledge you, otherwise.
Air: Though he does not choose to bear the title of Beta Ghoul, he still serves as the oldest Air ghoul. So he was consulted on what to do in regards to you. Air is, in fact, the oldest Ghoul on earth. He’s old enough to remember angels being a non-stop threat to the earlier tribes of Hell. Everyone assumed that, like Omega, he would want you to be sacrificed to the Olde One. But Air surprised everyone by vouching for you… so long as you physically bind your soul to Lucifer. As he explains, a Fallen Angel has been cast out for a reason much like their Infernal Majesty. That is useful to the Ministry and it’s goals so long as you show your trustworthiness and give your soul. If you go ahead and bind yourself Air will not fully trust you but at least feel confident that you pledged yourself sincerely.
SURPRISE SPECIAL: As the leader of all leaders (tm), the Sigma, he was happy to have you!! Lucifer wants you safe and cared for, after all! Special knows for a fact you are going to fit right in. You are EXACTLY what the Ministry needs! Truthfully, you were a little scared of this ghoul and his reputation in Heaven. But Special seems nice enough and shows you around. He has everyone treat you like royalty so you can’t really complain, can you…?

Ghouls are, put simply, humans suffering from advanced, prolonged radiation sickness and whose bodies have mutated such that gamma radiation extends their lifespan past natural limits.
The process of ghoulification is outlined in canon sources, but I wanted to make a guide that goes into more detail on the effects of radiation sickness in various cases, since the level and type of exposure significantly affects the outcome.
This is the first in what will be a series of posts exploring both real-life cases of radiation sickness and the sci-fi concept of ghoulification in some depth. Graphic descriptions of the physical deterioration of the body are included for informative purposes; reader discretion is advised.
For this first case study, I examine the effects on the human body of exposure to high levels of radiation in a short period of time, with a focus on the real case of Hisashi Ouchi.
On September 30, 1999, a lack of appropriate safety measures and the proper materials resulted in an accident that caused three workers at the nuclear power plant in Tōkai-mura, Japan, to suffer from severe radiation poisoning while purifying reactor fuel.
Point of Criticality
An uncontrolled fission reaction was produced when technicians poured nearly seven times the legal limit of uranium oxide into an improper vessel containing nitric acid. The men reported seeing a bright blue flash—indicative of Cherenkov radiation—when the mixture reached critical mass, flooding the room with radiation. The workers evacuated to the decontamination room, but already, the two who had been handling the reactive solution were overcome with intense pain from radiation burns, severe nausea, and difficulty breathing. Hisashi Ouchi, who suffered the highest level of exposure, also experienced rapid difficulties with mobility and coherence. Upon reaching the decontamination room, he vomited and fell unconscious.
~1 Hour Post-Exposure
Ouchi regained consciousness in the hospital about 70 minutes after the criticality accident, where doctors confirmed that he had been exposed to high doses of gamma, neutron, and other radiation.
The maximum allowable annual dose of radiation for nuclear technicians in Japan was 50 millisieverts. Exposure to more than 7 sieverts is considered fatal. Yutaka Yokokawa, the supervisor, had received 3 sieverts. The technicians who had been handling the uranium, Masato Shinohara and Hisashi Ouchi, received 10 sieverts and 17 sieverts, respectively.
~1 Day+ Post-Exposure
During the first few days in the ICU, Ouchi appeared to be in remarkably good condition, given the circumstances: the skin of his face and right hand was slightly red, as if by a sunburn, and swollen. His eyes were bloodshot, and he reported pain under his ear and right hand, which had received the most direct exposure, but he could speak normally, and he joked with the doctors and nurses attending to him.
6 Days Post-Exposure
Tests revealed that the high energy radiation that Ouchi had been exposed to had obliterated the chromosomes in his bone marrow. They were unrecognizable—some severed, some fused, all out of order. This damage meant that his body was unable to create new blood cells. The red blood cells that transport oxygen could not be replaced, and Ouchi's white blood cell count was near zero, leaving him extremely vulnerable to infection.
~1 Week+ Post-Exposure
Intensive treatments, including numerous skin grafts, blood and bone marrow transfusions, and revolutionary stem cell transplants were conducted in an attempt to stabilize Ouchi, but ultimately without lasting success.
The skin grafts couldn't hold; when medical tape was peeled from his skin, his skin came with it, and the marks left behind couldn't heal. Blisters like those of a burn appeared on his right hand.
Ouchi reported frequently that he was thirsty.
~10 Days Post-Exposure
By this point, Ouchi's oxygen levels were so low that even speaking required tremendous effort. Ouchi was placed on supplemental oxygen and required sedatives to be able to sleep.
2 Weeks+ Post-Exposure
Ouchi was no longer able to eat and required an IV. By day sixteen, most of the skin on the front side of his body had fallen off.
His low platelet count and lack of healthy skin meant that his blood and bodily fluids leaked through his damaged pores, resulting in unstable blood pressure.
Donor stem cells that were meant to allow his body to create new tissue were also destroyed by the radiation present in his body.
~1 Month Post-Exposure
On the 27th day following the accident, Ouchi suffered from intense diarrhea. The mucus layer of his large intestine had vanished, exposing the red submucosal layer beneath. His body could no longer disgest or absorb anything he ingested; even water was excreted as diarrhea.
The skin of Ouchi's right hand was almost entirely gone, leaving the surface of his hand raw and dark red. Blisters spread across his right arm and abdomen, then over his entire body. Gauze was required to replace his skin, and his fingers had to be individually wrapped to prevent them from sticking together. Without skin to keep him warm, Ouchi required an electrothermic device to maintain his body temperature while his bandages were changed—a daily procedure that took hours. Every time the gauze was removed, more of Ouchi's remaining skin went with it. His eyelids could not shut, and his eyes bled. His nails fell off.
Ouchi's right arm was necrotizing, leading to an increasing amount of myoglobin—a protein in muscle tissue—flowing in Ouchi's blood. Untreated, this could result in renal failure as the kidneys could not process the amount of myoglobin present.
Ouchi's body could not regenerate the platelets that form scabs, meaning the risk of hemorrhage was extreme.
By day 50, more than two liters of fluid seeped from Ouchi's damaged skin each day. The amount of fluid prevented skin grafts from adhering. Furthermore, he began to suffer from blood in his stool, and permeated blood seeped between his inflamed small and large intestines.
2 Months+ Post-Exposure
On the 59th day after the accident, Ouchi suffered the first of many heart attacks. His kidneys and liver were also failing. He no longer showed reactions to stimuli.
By day 63, Ouchi's macrophages—the immune cells that normally attack and consume bacteria and viruses—were attacking his own healthy blood cells.
After 67 days, Ouchi suffered internal hemorrhage. He bled from his mouth and intestines.
Ouchi would continue to suffer from heart attacks, as many as three in one hour. Each time, he was revived, but he suffered increasing brain damage, until multiple organ failure ended his life after 83 days in the hospital.
Ouchi's colleague Masato Shinohara underwent numerous successful skin grafts and a stem cell transfusion as well as radical cancer treatment, but he, too, died of multiple organ failure after seven months. Their supervisor, Yutaka Yokokawa, was treated for minor radiation sickness and was released from the hospital within three months of the accident.
This detailed chronology was referenced from the book A Slow Death: 83 Days of Radiation Sickness by Iwanami Shoten, translated by Maho Harada. My post, of course, focuses on Ouchi's physical condition in his final months, but it’s important to remember him not just as a victim or a patient. He was a loving husband and father whose sense of humor and resilience left an impression on everyone he came into contact with. The book is available in its entirety here and provides a moving, nuanced account of the incident and the efforts to save Ouchi's life.

Attention:
To all members of the Digging Corps, be advised that Nevada Central Dispatch has been made aware of various conflicting accounts of unexplained noises emanating from the Sector 17 tunnel systems. Note that any reports of a ‘banshee’ or banshee-like creature inhabiting this section of the mine are to be immediately disregarded. While some accounts mention hearing 'chilling' or 'ungodly' screams, others have stated instead hearing 'gentle familiar voices' at the exact same time, calling them to the vicinity of the collapsed mineshaft off of Gamma Tunnel, known colloquially as ‘the blinded shaft’. Obviously both accounts cannot be true, and incidentally the latter entity would perhaps be better described as a ‘siren’, not a ‘banshee’. Regardless, any screaming is certainly the regular kind coming from those trespassers or shovelmen currently trapped in cave-ins nearby and not some supernatural fiend, succubus or ghoul. Sector 17 is to hereby be considered off-limits to all except authorized personnel.
Many hands make light work.

I am so invested in your posts about Mountain and his pack of moms.
Does Mountain turn into a big kit whenever he visits them? Like a college kid who goes back home to his family during holidays.
- @ghouletteanon
(I did exactly two Google searches and these are the names for the previous drummers I found. I went with Terra over Gamma for obvious elemental reasons. I think there's three total? My inbox and DMs are open to any and all earth ghoul stans who know more than I do.)
Nothing terrible under the cut except the horror of knowing your parental figures have sex.
He knows Pebble's aware as soon as he sets foot into the deeper woods. The trees and mycelium networks are her eyes and ears, leaves rustling with wind-carried words to wherever she is. Not a single twig in this forest snaps without her knowing about it, which would give anyone else an incredible headache but Pebble seems to like it just fine.
And sure enough, he doesn't get but a yard or so before she appears. Sitting on an ancient log like she's been there the whole time waiting for him to pass by, even though he knew he'd been alone just moments ago.
She's all criss-crossed up from her arms to her legs, still as a statue as she watches him approach with his picnic basket. He doesn't say anything; he knows this routine well enough by now. Pebble can get odd, when left to her own devices for too long. The others are usually good at bringing her back to herself though.
Food helps too. Not the food she can scavenge from the forest like berries and mushrooms and prey animals eaten raw. Food that's been altered, baked, cooked. He lifts the cloth of the picnic basket and lets the warm smell of fresh bread waft out. Her nostrils flair and she stands up, quick as a wink. With one quick nod, she's off; darting through the undergrowth like a fox. It's on him to keep up, but he knows she'll come back for him if he lays behind too far. She'll get impatient but she'll always come back.
The path is different every time he visits. Some trick of Terra's to keep strangers out if they aren't guided in but he doesn't mind. He knows how much they value privacy and the time it takes to get to the destination is never too long. The undergrowth thins out, the trees grow further and further apart until they're in Ivy's garden with Ivy herself bending over to tug up a bundle of root vegetables. Pebble licks her fingertips as she walks over, delivering a loud and resounding smack to Ivy's rear end that Mountain glances away to avoid seeing barely in the nick of time.
"Pebble!" Ivy shouts, shooting up straight and cuffing the small menace in return. "Just once, a hello would be nice to hear instead of-"
"Hello." Mountain calls, walking between the rows to her with a wave. She turns around again and her happiness is so infectious that nearby plants immediately start flowering in response. Pebble takes the opportunity to dart into the little home that's been carved into the earth, set into the base of gentle slope covered in soft green grass.
"Mountain!" She cries, dropping her harvest into the dirt and leaping over the plants to catch him up in a bear hug. "Oh, I was just thinking about you! Terra was saying you were all back from tour, so of course we've been expecting you but honestly not so soon and-"
"Let that boy breathe." Comes a deeper voice from the doorway of the little home. Mountain straightens up automatically, brushing a few fly aways out of her face as Terra easily lopes over with her cane. She stops a few feet away, looks over him with a critical eye and he's acutely aware of every wrinkle and stain in his clothes, the way his right boot's come untied and how the flannel he has on now was definitely hers once upon a time.
"Suppose we'll have to take you as you are then." Terra says, a telling twinkle in her eye though her face remains firm. "What'd you bring us this time?"
"Harvest bread." He says, finally handing over the picnic basket. "Gooseberry and raspberry jam. Two kinds of cheese. Wine and whiskey and weed."
"Good stuff." Ivy says in approval.
"We'll see." Terra says. Then, "Pebble, don't you dare."
Pebble slinks out from behind Terra, hands raised in innocence even as her tail whips back. It's caught just in time by Terra's own tail, wrangled into submission as Mountain pretends to be thoroughly engrossed by his feet. He's not a prude, far from it but it just feels awkward to watch the ones who helped him with his first moments Topside be...like that.
"Welcome back." Terra says fondly after Pebble yanks her tail away and stomps off to set the table. Ivy picks up her vegetables again and goes to put her gardening tools away. "Tell us where you've been this whole time."
"All over." Mountain begins. And, like he always does, hits his head on the doorframe on the way in.
Some things never change.

Fallout: Maximum
Tumblr media
Concept art for a possible fanfic. A Trigun / Fallout crossover! Basic Setting Idea: This takes place on Earth, in North America, based largely upon the Fallout universe (games and TV series). I am having trouble figuring out a specific area (as my familiarity with the games is mostly in the East Coast setting games 3 and 4 and I have only played New Vegas just a little bit), but I am highly tempted to set this partly in Arizona (and thus in the series' commonwealth encompassing parts of California and Nevada). Arizona is where I grew up and ever since I learned that there was a scrapped game, Fallout: Van Buren, that was supposed to take place there, I was kind of excited. (Van Buren street! I know that area!.... *side eye* There's a reason why your character was to be an incarcerated criminal...
Tumblr media
In the fusion-universe, Plants remain Plants. There was a project fronted by the United States government to engineer an efficient power source that would end America's dependence on both fossil fuels and the weird atom-punk direct harvesting of nuclear energy. A major problem was of course making it profitable, because late-stage Capitalism rules Fallout's pre-war North America in some of the most hilarious, yet horrible ways. It was done, though, by the secretive Project SEEDS - which had some relation to Vault-Tec, but, being its own separate thing, was spared the horrors that Vault-Tec did for sick funsies and had its own horrors to contend with. Independent Plants have the powers that they have in Trigun-canon, including their long lifespans, putting them at equal to ghoulified humans. They also, like ghouls, are pretty well immune to gamma radiation - except that it becomes clear that they are even stranger beings in the presence of it, as their Plant-markings will glow. Pictured above is Vash in one of the Glowing Seas leftover from a direct atom-bomb strike and Nicholas D. Wolfwood (Ghoulwood), smoking some good ol' Grey Tortoise cigarettes.

Band Ghoul Names and Element Guide (For this blog)
I’ve been meaning to make this guide for a while. Recently I received a request which will REALLY need this for better context.
(Note: some of the elements and names Are just ones I personally use for my world building, so they aren’t official or fan wide!! This is just how I’ll be regarding them and how they work in my writing.)
All ghouls in the list are written in chronological order of appearance!
*ghouls with multiple instruments positions
**Mixed Element ghouls
Non Band Ghouls:
Special (“Phil”): interview and behind the scenes ghoul. Quintessence Element. Also the Sigma Ghoul.
**Cowbell: Plays the Cowbell. Earth and Quintessence mix.
Miasma: “syringe ghoul” - Ghoul who had the syringe during chapter three. Presumably quintessence/unconfirmed element. Rumored to also have a 'darkness' to their element...
Luna: Kia Forum Vocalist - Quintessence
Breeze: Kia Forum Pianist - Air
Aqua: Kia Forum Cellist - Water (Freshwater/Lake)
Marina: Kia Forum Cellist - Water (Oceanic)
Fire Ghouls (Guitar players):
Alpha: eras I - III
Ifrit: era III
*Ember (Sodo): era III bassist, Era iv + current guitarist. Fire ghoul but born of mixed element parents (one water and one fire.)
**Swiss: Era IV - Current. Technically a multiple element ghoul but primarily shows fire element talents. Guitar, tambourine, vocals. Mixed Fire, Air, and Quintessence element power.
Quintessence Ghouls (Rhythm guitar):
Omega: Era I - III
*/** Tide: (originally bassist) era III. Mixed ghoul of water and quintessence.
Aether: era III - current.
Chaos: Goes by the nickname Phantom. Era V. Powers manifest in both matter manipulation and communicating with the dead.
Air Ghouls (Keyboard):
Air: (Formally known as Beta in my verse) Era I - III
Stratus (ChAir): Era III
Cumulus: Era Iv - Current , taller ghoulette and keyboardist
Cirrus: Era IV - Current, shorter ghoulette and also backing vocals.
**Sunshine: Era V - tambourine, vocals, keys. mixed element of Air and Fire. She/They pronouns equally. Their element actually manifests as LIGHT, which helped them get their nickname!
**Aurora: Era V - Vocals and tambourine. Air ghoulette with mixed elemental parents of air and quintessence . Standard Air elemental powers but shows auras and aura reading abilities.
Earth Ghouls (Drums):
Gamma: Era I - II. Mixed Forrest and Stone ghoyl.
Earth: (small earth) Era II - III. Plains Ghoul.
Ivy: VERY BRIEFLY end of Era III before Mountain took over. Forrest ghoul.
Mountain: Era III - Current. Stone Ghoul.
Water Ghouls (Bassists):
Delta (Chain Ghoul): Era I. Oceanic ghoul/borderline deep sea.
River: Era I - II. Freshwater river ghoul.
Water: Era II. Freshwater ghoul with oceanic parent.
(Tide was fourth Bassist before being the second Quintessence Ghoul) (era III)
Mist: Era III. Oceanic ghoul.
(Ember was the sixth before he went fire )
Rain: Era IV - Current . Freshwater/Lake ghoul.

So what is the wasteland like in your AU? Is life slowly crawling back in? Or is it being stamped out by petty conflicts and the Jesus freaks? How the hell do Gamma storms even still exist? What lives out thier besides people?
!!! Hi!
So, this AU is a pretty direct Fallout adaptation, and I'm not sure how familiar you are with the games so sorry if I over or under explain.
It does kind of bother me that in the games like 200 years have passed since the War, and people are still basically in the stone age and eating centuries-old mac'n'cheese despite so much of the Old World being in a semi-recoverable state.
The sort answer is, the Wasteland could actually be built into a functioning society pretty easily, if people weren't The Absolute Worst.
Settlements are kept small and lower-tech, because you're right, the Army of Righteous does prioritize places that look like they could become a threat. Water treatment plants, armories, power stations, commercial farmlands, etc. The only large settlements that can survive are the ones that are basically fortresses and not worth the effort to wipe out.
This is part of what allowed the system of Overlords to form - they were basically Raiders who were able to survive long enough to amass enough fortifications and followers to the point they aren't easy targets any more, which in turn brings even more settlers to agree to serve under them for protection.
Wildlife is standard Fallout fare - mole rats, mutant dogs, radstags, yao guai, deathclaws, brahmin, giant insects of all kinds, mirelurks, robots, ghouls, and super mutants (along with whatever else I've forgotten). There are a few other animals I'll throw in mutated variations of as needed. Only major homebrew species is Razorbacks - mutated descendants of pigs and boars, I'll do a little writeup on them when I post Fat Nuggets.
As for the radiation storms, they're a gameplay element from Fallout 4, which I think they explained as there being the hyper-irradiated Glowing Sea nearby, which was ground zero for a massive nuke. Storm fronts coming into the Commonwealth over it would pick up the radiation and cause an extra hazard during storms. Most people and animals would either take shelter from the storms, or are already too irradiated/mutated to really be bothered. It's a convenient device to force people into places and in close quarters for a period of time, so I kept it. Let's just assume Pentagram City was a major target for nukes like other major cities, so there's a similar issue.
Additional worldbuilding thoughts below the cut:
The people who do make advancements/big recoveries in technology are people like Vox, and are just basically cut-throat capitalists who will murder their competitors and burn down/steal their stuff, to keep a monopoly on what they offer.
So VoxTech in the Vault 666 universe does offer a bunch of modern conveniences, but he also owns the local power stations and such to make them work, and runs the Vees' territory like a glorified Company Town where everything just goes back into his pockets. Anyone who tries to innovate is either bought out by him, or killed off so they're not a threat. Same with other Overlords who run an industry. No altruists can survive in this environment, which makes Charlie's dreams that much crazier.
technically anyone could probably run a radio broadcast. Alastor is so full of himself he doesn't see others as being even close his level, but people are too freaked out by him to really try; doesn't help that he overrides Vox's broadcast (which is commercials with some music now and again) for funsies whenever he feels like it.

Please, I’m just a silly autistic little beast. Do you have games abt nuclear radiation or reactors? While I do prefer things like walking sims, exploration games and horror, I am curious what you could recommend! Just not anything with radioactive zombies or ghouls pls <3 I like more realistic approaches if that’s alright! Or something on the silly end like Turnip Boy Commits Tax Fraud
THEME: Nuclear Radiation
Hello friend! This is more about apocalyptic games than Nuclear games, probably because the first thing people think of when they hear of radiation is the apocalypse. But there's some fun concepts being explored here nevertheless!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Nuclear Knights, by Gormengeist.
Nuclear Knights is a narrative-heavy action TTRPG about adventurers in a world thousands of years after a catastrophic magical nuclear war, where things have wrapped back around to high-magic pulp fantasy. Fight monsters, lead settlements, win battles of wit and worthiness, command the forgotten powers and mysterious ways- uncover what was lost, become something new.
Designed from the ground up to be as evocative of epic pulp fantasy during play as possible, the mechanics are easy to learn without sacrificing depth. Nuclear Knights attempts to be a marriage of classical dungeoneering and bold, modern collaborative storytelling.
This is a game where the radiation is more magical in nature, causing interesting, strange and esoteric mutations that you can contribute to as you play. As a dungeoneering game, there’s a lot of different pieces to help put your character together: classes, disciplines, homelands, titles and gods! Expect a lot of fun enemies and weird cursed loot.
Extinction Punk, by Extinction Punk.
Extinction Punk is a table-top role-playing game (TTRPG) that blends elements of science fiction and science fantasy to envision a future where humanity fails to stop a man-made extinction event such as a climate cataclysm, a nuclear holocaust, or a biological war.
Players of Extinction Punk get to explore the ruins of an Earth that is no longer under humanity’s control and encounter the (not necessarily) human civilizations that rise from the ashes. Together with the person organizing the game (the Game Master, or GM for short), the players create characters that will fight for survival while searching for powerful artefacts or useful mutations.
This is a Powered by the Apocalypse game, which means it’s going to favour story over mechanics. This means that players have quite a bit more control over world creation, so if you don’t want zombies, you don’t have to have them! This game has more mutation themes and options than basic Apocalypse World, and character playbook themes include Ancient Archivist, Bunker Baby, Hardly Human, and more!
Wastoid, by Jason Tocci.
Wastoid is a gonzo, post-apocalyptic, sci-fi RPG, inspired by games like Fallout, Mutant Crawl Classics, and Gamma World. (Especially Fallout! But not so much that Microsoft should sue.)
This game is still in the early development stage: the rules and character creation are bare-bones. However, Jason Tocci has created some insanely popular games and game systems in the past, so this game is probably going to be a huge hit once it’s fully released.
Wastoid uses the Knave rules as designed by Ben Milton, with various inspirations from Mausritter, The Black Hack, and other games. The preview is still a pretty heavy document, with 42 pages of character options, game rules, faction management and advice on running a game that’s fun for everyone. If you like a retro, pulp-action take on nuclear fallout, this might be the game for you.
However, if you want a gonzo-apocalyptic rpg that’s a bit more fully released, I’d recommend checking out Omega Soup, by Dice Doctor Games.
Games I’ve recommended in the past

Undiscovered, Underground
A/n: this was supposed to be a short thoughts post, now it's fic length so enjoy lol. A special thank you to @sovaghoul for fueling my thoughts about Delta.
TW: brief discussions of death, brief allusion to animal death (none depicted), excessive prayer, vague descriptions of an infirmary stay
Word Count: 2,075
Thinking about Delta returning from his transition and they can tell something's not entirely right about him, but the ghouls still love him and care for him all the same. Until he starts saying things that are a bit... off. At first they chalked it up to the after affects of going through such a drastic change, a shift in magick types that would scramble anyone's brain.
Until his strangeness continues, the ghoul effectively isolating himself from his loved ones simply by saying what he sees in the stars. What he feels in the streams. What the tea leaves at the bottom of his mug spell out. His pack had abandoned him, the ghoul becoming a shut in, a recluse. All until one of the earth ghouls returns from town with that year's Farmer's Almanac, proving everything he said to be true, albeit still strange.
It's the way the now quintessence ghoul seems to stare through them as they apologize. Even though his pack feels guilt for their actions, they do not embrace him how they used to when he was water. Their touch runs cold, even Alpha's hands are hesitant when they find his shoulder, the grip weak.
Only Pebble looks on at the changed ghoul with a reverence, the same love behind his eyes that used to be mirrored by the ghoul. His calloused palm resting atop Delta's hand, the quintessence ghoul's claws curled around the skull of a jackdaw. He knew Pebble was the ghoul who brought the Almanac back from town, the one who tried to clear Delta's name. Yet he withdraws his hand from Pebble's grip, watching as the light fades from the earth ghoul's eyes.
"Delta, you have to trust me. I know none of us have given you a reason to do so, but please." Pebble sighed before rising from his position across the table, "I'm going into the garden, you can find me if you want. But you're not obligated to."
Delta sat alone in the kitchen, his pack had left him once again. The ghouls had scattered like animals at the sense of an impending landslide. The air hung heavy in the den, tainted by the ghoul's new strange aura. It wasn't his fault that he had come back wrong. He had no control of what horrors he had seen throughout his transition. Returning from death is apt to make anyone the slightest bit crazy, but they didn't understand it. Maybe Alpha did, the pitying hand laid weakly on his shoulder. But even then, their pity and guilt wasn't enough. He wanted remorse, a sign that they still had a shred of love for their family member.
____________
Pebble figured his offer, like everything else he felt for the ghoul was a lost cause. The earth ghoul was knelt down in the mud of the strawberry patch, fussing over the slow ripening fruits. There was no rhyme or reason to his actions, just an effort to keep his hands busy and his mind off the loss of his companion. That was until he felt a presence, a strong rush of quintessence the ghoul was still learning to control. The earth ghoul kept his eyes down, examining the leaves of a worsening plant and attempting to make a mental note to consult his mentor about it in the morning. The sun was too high to change the care routine now.
"The winter was too dry, berries will fail this year" Delta spoke softly, almost hoping that Pebble's hearing aids didn't catch the frequency at which he spoke. The ghoul feebly searching for an excuse to leave until the small earth ghoul's eyes met his.
"I told Gamma it was foolish to plant, but he insisted. At least the birds and the bugs will get a treat, we might be living off the stash of canned fruits from last season" Pebble spoke, the soft emerald green eyes searching the other ghoul's face. There it was. That spark, a glimmer of the ghoul who once was. Trust. Compassion. Hope. It was all still there, under the swirling surface of stardust and horrors, water was still there. Rushing below the surface, like an underground river that was previously unknown to mankind.
The quintessence ghoul watched his companion, his demeanor slowly softening and allowing the earth ghoul in. "I'm sorry, I know I've said some off-putting things. Made myself untrustworthy, a pariah. I never intend to say them, it just rushes out of me" he tries to explain, feeling those emerald eyes boring into his soul.
"I understand, you've seen things that none of us are still yet to comprehend. Things that would drive any one a little nuts to know, but you had no right to shut me out" Pebble sighed, turning back towards the dirt as a caterpillar began to cross over his hand. The earth ghoul rose slowly, taking the caterpillar towards the stalks of milkweed that grew wild along the side of the planters shed.
Delta didn't say anything, he didn't follow, he didn't attempt to beg for forgiveness. Why would Pebble forgive him? When he was rejected despite spending his every waking moment defending the quintessence ghoul, clinging to imagery of the water he once loved effortlessly. He was at a loss, no one had told him that this would happen when he faced his transition between elements. Maybe no one knew of the effects, a transition to quintessence had never been successfully completed before Delta.
"Pebble, I..." The quintessence ghoul started and then stopped, his words failing him "Why do you still care?"
The earth ghoul stood over him once again, his body language defensive and fearful. It was foolish to show fear in the face of such an unpredictable ghoul, especially when the part of himself that was clinging onto the hope he would find himself again was rapidly waning like the moon. Like the tide receding far into the ocean before a tsunami.
"Maybe you should go play in the creek bed or whatever it is you do now. If you don't find the answer there then I can't help you."
The voice that came out of him was foreign, lacking the adoration and tact that the earth ghoul typically spoke to his pack with. The words dripping in a venom reserved only for those who have committed acts of harm too great to forgive. His voice shook, the weight of the words too great for such a small ghoul to bear.
Delta found himself alone for the third time that day, watching the last vestiges of his home walk down the hillside towards the chapel. A part of him knew that Pebble had a point, that if he couldn't find the answer then he was hopeless. The venom that soaked his words hung in the quintessence ghoul's system, like a neurotoxin laced spear driven into his abdomen. Even when hurt, when terrified and broken, the earth ghoul still showed others a mercy they didn't deserve. Delta sat on the hillside until the earth ghoul was nothing but a speck, yet he could still feel the emotions afflicting the ghoul through their bond. Something he regrets not having broken before the ceremony.
___________
It was sunset by the time he reached the creek bed, finding it had dried from the weeks they've gone without rain. Yet the quintessence ghoul found himself kneeling amongst the jagged stones, the pain radiating through his joints was well deserved. The ghoul knelt in prayer for hours, the feeling his lower extremities faded into a dull ache before giving way to total numbness.
His gesticulations never faltered through the sensations, believing he was deserving of the pain and more. If only he had declined the transition. If only he had backed out of the ceremony. Then his pack would still be there, they would still love him. It wasn't until the moon reached it's peak in the night sky when he stopped praying, exhaustion curling it's dark fingers around the ghouls mind.
He crawled weakly from the creek bed, finding cramped shelter under a collection of bushes. Comfort was not something the ghoul deserved, a menace like him should not feel safety or satisfaction knowing what he has done. A dreamless sleep rapidly took over the ghoul, keeping him under the brush for a few days.
Delta only awoke when familiar voices cut through the sleep that had engulfed his weakened form. He wanted to bury himself further into the bushes, but two of the voices wouldn't allow him to do so. Slowly pulling the ghoul from the bush, lifting his weak, hunger addled body from the ground. He didn't feel the touch of the third voice until they had lain him on an infirmary cot, the antiseptic scent awakening his senses like a jolt of electricity.
The third voice stayed by his bedside for an unknown amount of time, it could've been a few days or even weeks. Delta knew nothing of the time that passed, delirium and fear gripping his body and soul like a vice. Yet that presence was always next to him, the soft scent of honeysuckle, the calloused hand that held onto his in a death grip, the gentle pressure of a cool damp towel across his brow. The tears spilled, the voice going from watery when pleading for something to be done for the quintessence ghoul, to hoarse from the choked sobs that left it. Soft, loving eyes that caressed the quintessence ghoul when hands could not.
When the fever broke, the delirium began to fade. Once again Delta had passed through the shadow of death and survived, albeit this time he was not concerned if he would come out of it to tell the tale. It was then when he learned that the presence alongside him was Pebble, that he had organized the search party for him. That he spent those nights in the chapel, sleeping in the pews only when the exhaustion was too overwhelming to continue his pleas to the Dark Lord for Delta's safety.
"Why did you stay all this time?" Delta asked softly, his voice gravely and rough from the days spent screaming himself mute.
He felt Pebble's fingers gently pry open his clenched fist, before he felt an all too familiar sign pressed into his palm. I love you. It was repeated over and over until Delta closed his hand around Pebble's, holding onto the earth ghoul tighter than he ever had before.
"That's my one flaw on this Earth, that I will stay. No matter how much pain it will cause for me, because I love you and I refuse to let you break that bond" Pebble spoke, voice quivering with emotion as tears threatened to spill over yet again.
Delta knew he was right, that was the reason he found when he was knelt in the creek bed, crying out for answers. The pain he had felt in those hours and in the weeks in the infirmary were nothing compared to the aching chasm he had left in the earth ghoul's chest. The chasm widening each day he forced the only one who cared away.
"You can't bear all of this alone Delta, you've got to let us help" he said, tears spilling from the emerald eyes that never left his.
"I don't want to be a burden, I've already driven you all away. Why would anyone help now?" Delta spoke coarsely, tears brimming in his own eyes.
Pebble drew in a shuddering sigh before speaking, a hand coming up to card through the few untangled strands of silver hair on Delta's head. "You're not a burden, not to me. Not to us. We always wanted to help, but you didn't allow anyone the grace to face the horrors with you"
Delta's eyes shifted from the earth ghoul's face, forcing the tears down. Attempting to swallow down the pain he felt, the fear that constantly grips his mind. "I don't deserve that, I was barely strong enough to survive the ceremony. Why would anyone care to be saddled with the weight of my mind?"
"It's simple, the same reason I'll come back each time. We love you, truly, we still do despite it all" Pebble cupped his face in his hands, as if pleading him wordlessly to look into his eyes "because I love you. And I dont want you to ever forget that"
