Devlog 2024-02-09 (Episode 4 - Part 1 is out NOW!)
It's Friday! And this is a special Friday because it's a RELEASE Friday!
That's right! Episode 4 - Part 1 is now live!
Update Edit: It's also a sad day for my family. I lost someone dear to me this morning, someone even dearer to my loved ones, and my heart is aching with them for our loss. I wish things weren't the way they are. I wish I could do more to ease their suffering.
Project Details:
167,666 words in total. (That's roughly the same length as the first two Harry Potter novels combined)
825 possible choices.
Patrons can get their version over here (win|mac|lin) or here (android), and everyone else can get the full game on Steam or Itchio!
Episode 4 - Part 1 continues the story after the dramatic conclusion from Episode 3.
It introduces several new characters, several new and redrawn backgrounds, several new portraits, several new music tracks, an overhauled story controller, a new free-roam mechanic, a new star system navigation interface, a lore gallery with unlockable entries, a system for players to load custom-made stories written by other players into the game, a seasonal event (Spooktober Heist), and nearly 40K additional words of content (some being intimate content for Kiaria, Lochem and Khalil).
It also includes two very special player portraits! Thanks to the amazing ladies from Wanderlust Games, you can now play your Mah'Abeu as a younger version of Damon or Ayame from Andromeda Six! (Seriously, if you're hearing about Andromeda Six for the first time– You're about to fall in love. Go check them out and support them if your wallet allows!)

We've been working extremely hard to bring this release to you, and while we've added a ton of new things, we would have loved to add more. Sadly, we had to draw a line in the sand and release what was available.
Some of the things that we could add before the deadline that were requested by our beta testers:
MC is more knowledgeable about the Cephilusk.
Added a location hint during free-roam sequences.
Made Kiaria more Kiaria when dealing with current events.
Your Mah'Abue now crafts the notice being sent to the crew.
Several more personality options (with more on their way)
Most free-roam scenes now have the crew members touching on or hinting at the current situation.
Fixed some logic bugs with Sonia's scene.
Adjusted Andreas' scene with an additional choice if he becomes too much.
Added some additional logic and checks to the response you can give when the crew/your LI asks about how you are coping. (Might still expand on this.)
Your Mah'Abue now has more control over how they handle Nikau.
Added Lindi's music track.
An additional intimate scene for Khalil
Some of the things that we couldn't add before the deadline that will be added very soon. (over the next week or three):
Implementing some more of the Beta Tester feedback requests.
The start of Tabitha's character arc.
A free-roam scene for Lebeny, along with an additional intimate scene.
Adding a semi-intimate, more risque scene with Matthias.

This isn't a full chapter public update (that will be happening on January 2) but it's more substantial than adding dialogue or making tweaks, so it gets the fancy header.
There was some feedback on earlier chapters, and then some for the Chapter 4 Patreon version that went up yesterday, which asked for the chance to show more ways in which a PC has been psychologically impacted by what happened to them before the start of the game. It's something I've wanted to lean further into in a similar way to how the game is responsive to the amount of the PC's physical pain. After all, the game is about a character who has been through something difficult, and is navigating the aftermath - as well as potentially interacting closely with others who have been through difficult things too and are handling that in various ways.
When I was first planning the game, I also knew I wanted to have plenty of chances for hurt/comfort for PCs who want it, and for PCs who don't want that to be able to reject it or feel ambivalent, and so on. While I've been writing beyond what's currently playable, I've been aware that I wanted to include more opportunities for a PC who is not OK to open up (or not) about it to other characters. Although I tweaked some descriptions in the last update, it wasn't anything major and it was a gap that I knew I wanted to improve, especially as it felt right for some characters to notice and mention if something stressful was going on with the PC.
It's also the case that in Chapter 7, which I'm writing at the moment, there is some very stressful stuff happening for the PC and I knew I needed a firmer foundation in the mechanics of how a PC's stress is described and whether NPCs have had a chance to notice or bring up what's been going on before that point.
Anyway: in the current version starting in Chapter 2, there are now some more specific responses the PC can have to stressors around them; some Chapter 3 stress points and NPC responses; in future chapters, I've written further stressors, PC responses, and NPC interactions/responsivity.
Most, though not all, of this text triggers in response to how much physical and mental pressure the PC is under. I've gone back and forth about whether, and how, to display this score on the stats page. At the moment, there's a sentence descriptor under "Health" that gives some information about how the PC is doing; I will probably tweak how this displays, or the way it's worded, over time.
As ever, this is all subject to plenty of iteration and I'm very happy to consider any feedback of whatever kind - about this or anything else in the game!

Happy Infaust cover reveal Friday! Give it up for @ambisun for another banger of a cover! But of course, this is only the beginning...
A witch with a dead familiar is an outlier and an ill-omen to every village they pass through. Rehan Nadir is one such witch. The only jobs available to him are terrible ones, and vagrancy is his only recourse… At least, it was until he heard tell of the town of Hamelin’s plight. Stories of a malicious entity, a chaos god, have tormented the village for hundreds of years, and like clockwork tragedy has struck once more: while the adults gathered elsewhere, the children were spirited away. No trace of them has been seen since. The town is desperate to bring them back. Very desperate.
Finding and returning the lost children would be just the thing to give Rehan a new chance at the life he lost after the death of his familiar, and if all it takes is killing a god of chaos, then he’s more than ready to take the plunge and open that door. Unfortunately, he just didn’t anticipate opening a few more in the midst of dealing the finishing blow.

Infaust is a dark romance recounting the tale of the witch Rehan Nadir and the elusive chaos god known only as the Piper. Trapped in a world where even the very dirt wants them dead, the two must depend on one another to escape—and along the way realize that perhaps the definition of a happily ever after really is a subjective one.
This is a story for those of us who know things can always get worse, that there's always still something left to lose. Infaust has been a very long time coming, starting as an initial concept idea back in 2018 and undergoing multiple rewrites over the years to bring it to the state it's in now. But with that long timeline comes bigger pay-offs. I'm incredibly proud of where this story has gone and all that it continues to develop into.
With that said...
This isn't the final cover.
I've had to delay this reveal once already, and nearly did so again last night. My cover artist is currently in the midst of an international move and her time is, as you can well imagine, limited. We thought we'd have the final cover done last night but alas, we had to prioritize elements to meet this deadline. The actual cover will look a little closer to this when it's all said and done.

I don't have a solid date yet on when to expect this full version alongside the full spread. Our tenuous goal is April 10th, but moving to a different country isn't easy, simple, or fun. We'll have it by the time the book launches, so please be patient with us as we navigate this really bumpy timeline!

While I was cleaning up our project folders today, I finally created a Project Template that I can just copy/paste when starting a new project.
I figured since it took me hundreds of hours of procrastination and 18 months of disorganized frustration to finally get that setup, I'd try to save someone else the trouble of doing the same, and released the whole folder and its templates zipped up on itchio.
The zip file includes:
The full folder structure we use when starting a project.
ProjectName.gdoc - A writing template with basic headers and our in-line project management method.
We use this for our core writing, collaboration, editing, and project management.
ProjectName.afpub - A basic A5 zine layout setup for print, with basic master pages configured, page numbers, CMYK color profile, margins, and bleed.
We don't like baseline or grids by default. They're not configured in this file.
Images Folder - We store all game export images here. Such Page or Spread exports, marketing images we've assembled, etc. We don't store images that will be imported into the game here. That's in Resources.
Images/Itchio_Socials_Template.afpub - This template has all of our common needed image sizes setup for marketing and setup of our itchio project pages.
PDFs Folder - This is where we export PDFs to. Final PDFs ready for upload go into "Itchio Final" and Print-Ready PDFs are uploaded to "Mixam Final".
We work really hard to only keep the most current PDFs in the two "Final" folders. If you want a v2, v3, or v1.2.222.final.v8.pdf in the main folder, that's fine. But I highly encourage you to spend the time to keep the "Final" folders clean.
Tip: Check out the "Manage Versions" feature in Google Drive. 
Press Kit Folder - Contains our press kit gdoc template, an assets folder, and another PDF folder.  We end up sharing this entire folder out for Press, and link to this folder within the Press Kit document itself.
If you want more information how to write a Press Kit, check out PlusOneExp's fantastic video on that.
Resources Folder - This is where we put inspirations for the game along with art and design assets to use in the game itself. This folder gets pretty messy by the time the project is done.

I've made an alt account to give the best explanation I can - when you join the server, you'll be dropped right into the rules channel. You'll see two other channels, the FAQ and the old bug reporting channel, which has a link to a Google Form for any bugs you encounter and want to report.

You'll need to agree to follow our rules next. Discord I believe only allows us to list 6 rules - you'll need to read through the rules channel for the full list!

After that, you'll need to wait a few minutes before you can interact with Silverpelt to gain access to the rest of the server. Use this time to read through the rules channel to make sure you understand how we expect our members to act!

Once the countdown is up, you'll be able to click the verify button! If it doesn't work straight away, wait a bit and try again. Sometimes the silly bot is taking a nap and forgets to let newcomers in!
This will open up a ton of new channels, which may be a bit overwhelming at first. Don't stress too much - you can click Browse Channels at the top of the channel list to choose exactly what you'd like to see!

Some important channels:
staff-help is where you go to open a ticket. If you ever have a concern about the server, such as another member making you upset or uncomfortable, you can open a private ticket to chat with the moderators. Nobody can see these but you and the team, so they're a great way to express how you're feeling about things without fear of being judged by others!
Everything in the Clan Gen category is where you'd go to chat about the game! We have a general channel for regular chatter, a screenshots channel for sharing your in-game pictures, a challenges forum for mixing up your gameplay, and a clan-sharing forum for sharing your Clans!
The Creative Corner category hosts channels like art, alongside the modding channels. This is where you'd go to get user-created mods (such as the ever-popular LifeGen!), or to talk about making your own!
The Tech and Game Support category is where you want to be if you need help. The official-tech-help forum accepts threads asking for help with the ItchIo version of the game, while the players-helping-players channel is where you'd go for help with the GitHub developmental version. There is also a save-file-editing channel for help with editing your files, such as bringing a dead cat back to life or causing a cat to become pregnant!
I hope this explanation made sense, and wasn't too overwhelming. I hope to see you in the server!

nope, I can't predict when the full game will be finished because something always comes up that delays the development. for now, the plan is to release the full version on itchio and Blastic's patreon, since not everyone can download the game from itchio. but I also have other sites in mind where I could upload it ^^

Cozy Town is a lovely and sweet way to pass the time with friends and would be friends. Use a deck of normal playing cards and map making materials to play with others (or by yourself!) and create a town of lovely inhabitants!
You can play out an entire year of this town, across sweet spring, sunny summer, soft autumn, and snuggled down winter. Together you’ll explore what makes people, and the communities they’re in, feel safe and cozy!

I wrote Cozy Town as a way to explore gentle games that don't depend on high stakes, lack, and conflict as a means of play. It's a simple game that values your creativity and intuition, that encourages free form collaboration and an open imagination.
Each season comes with 23 prompts, inspired by my experience as a tarot reader. I'm going to be honest here, that prompt writing was some of the hardest in my life! I wrote Cozy Town early in my game design career and it was hard coming up with almost 100 wholesome prompts that didn't depend on drama or angst, haha! (the rest of my work can be VERY dramatic and VERY angsty)

When you create your town, you have pick lists to inspire features, celebrations, and more! In the final version of the game, I got to work with other designers to create more pick lists and event card oracles for you to enjoy.

The whole game is bursting at the seams with a chill vibe and lovely illustrations! Cozy Town started out as a humble game using font art (and laid out in Libre Office Writer!). But! In the years since, Cozy Town has become such a beloved game. I wanted to create the a shiny version of the game!
I put together a sweet 90s inspired PC layout and A.G. Reeder created truly lovely art. Alex did so much to create the amazing energy of the game, with very little direction from me. Cozy Town became an entirely new game thanks to his work!!

Over the years, I've heard so many lovely stories of folks playing with family, friends, classmates, and by themselves. I've seen the most fun maps and heard wonderful stories. I'm honored that the game has touched so many hearts.
I'm so proud of this game, and I owe much its design framework to Avery Alder's The Quiet Year and Dream Askew (one of my favorite descriptions from folks about Cozy Town is "The Quiet Year, but not depressing and, really happy, actually." hah!)
Cozy Town is a great way to introduce folks to the wonderful world of TTRPGs, but it's also just a fun game to play when you want to chill and have a good time.

I'm really grateful for the folks who talked about the game and enjoyed it. The support over the years and the successful itchfunding meant I could afford to work with other creatives to work on the final version!
My health has finally improved enough that I can add the last pieces of art from Alex, so the FINAL (???!!!) version of the PDF should be up soon. (I mean, the version you can get now is 99.999% there haha)
There's an audiobook version that's coming out in 2023, and maybe a few more surprises? Who knows! I hope you check out the game and tell folks about it!

Here's an old screenshot of my monster game project!

The core gameplay loop was that monsters would invade the town and you'd have to defeat all of them to save the day. You would be unable to participate in events if the town was in a state of panic.
The original town in the game was located in a harsh desert environment, but the new plan for this game would be to make the town a cozy forested area due to the main labyrinth being changed from a cave to a kind of layered forest.
These are early versions of the sprites. Here's a few more screenshots of the game project from later on in its development.

As you can see, Meowza went by a different name during this stage of development. You were also able to see the name of the items you were wearing, but that wasn't very interesting.
Farming was planned as well, but was ultimately scrapped due to not fitting within the new gameplay loop. This screenshot was taken during testing of the cancelled farming feature.

Lots of stuff happened during the full development of this game project before it was shelved. The project was in a state of constant development hell, so I moved on to other game projects.
It would be cool to bring this old game project back! I just have to see if I can move it to a better game engine and get things running smoothly.

Oh, it will take time before the full thing is ready for sale. 😅
There will be a public version on Itchio but not before my Patreons get to play it.
I'll be restarting my Patreon in September and that's when Patreons will get to play it.
I don't know Renpy (Currently too busy to learn it) So I'm using a Dev to help me code it and design the UI and this thing is expensive as hell. 😅 (Thank goodness for my 9-5)
I'm planning to do a Kickstarter to see if it will be worth continuing because I won't be able to keep covering all the expenses of coding, artwork, and bug fix.
So keep in mind that the free version will only be content that is part of that choice script demo.
But overall, if everything goes well and I get the fund to finish it, it will be released on Steam, Itchios, and mobile that will use landscape mode. 💕

Do you have any recommendation for games with yandere/s where player's pronouns are he or they?
I did actually make a list that covers MLM/Custom Pronouns list here, but let me think if I can find a couple more. More and more VNs are allowing players to choose their own pronouns or are written in a way where it's gender neutral.
Killing Kiss - mobile game about people in the city of Gray and you date mafia members. You play as a thief named Ryu, and one of the guys is a yandere (in his ending).
Froot Basket Dark Chocolate - the prequel to Froot Basket Valentine that gives the POV of the yandere. You can choose the player's pronouns, and though they have a more masculine body type. Future Recommendation.
Picture Perfect Romance - the mc isn't given a gender but they have a more masculine appearance (from what I can tell). It's a bit abstract on what's going on though. Future Recommendation.
Hashihime of the Old Book Town - I actually debated a really REALLY long time if there was a yandere in this, but I finally can confirm there's one in here. It's a very good BL game set in the Meiji Era about time travel and the artwork is beautiful. I might write a recommendation on my website blog for this one.
Heart Fragments - very well made game about mutants, though the male yandere in this one is more clingy. You can present as more feminine or masculine, choose the voice/ pronouns and a lot more.
Yandere Love: Chains of Fate - has a gender neutral version now, though personally I wasn't the biggest fan of the game, I can't deny the artwork at least is very beautiful.
囲 Kakoi BL - I do actually want to play this one but I can't get the patch to work. It is a full game and is fully translated. It's r18 as well with a subby yandere.
Here you are, a handful of games. I think of them are more on the masculine side, but as I said, most itchio games nowadays have a system set that allows you to choose pronouns, so hopefully that's helpful.

Honor Bound Public Update: Chapter 4
Chapter 4 of Honor Bound is up and playable for everyone. The demo is now around 173,000 words!
Things you can expect from this chapter:
a change of scene as you take a trip to the capital with Korzha
partying and politicking with military and non-military types alike

some cameos for those with sharp eyes
the nicest restaurants you've ever been to
If your previous saves don't work or you want to get straight to the new bits, you can skip to a chapter of your choice and tailor your playthrough once you've answered or randomised the events of the previous games.

For plot reasons, Chronotopia actually has quite a weird structure so let's talk about that (and routes), shall we? 🙂

After the common route (the demo), there's a turning point where Kionna has to find a way to escape her father. Each strategy corresponds to a different route with a different theme. There are 2 available at the beginning but more will unlock as you progress in the story 📖.

So in total, there are: 💀 1 sudden bad ending (A) 📚 5 different story routes (B1, B2, C1, C2, D) ❤️ 3 love interest short routes (E, EE, F)
Besides, settings can be very different between routes!

For example, the B1 route takes place in the countryside. It follows Perrault’s version more or less closely with Kionna fleeing in the middle of the night while wearing the dreadful skin & getting adopted by a family of farmers 👨‍🌾.

In particular, you can befriend a young girl called Fleur 💐. Be careful though: despite her slender look, she has quite the strong character & is very resourceful at that. You’d better not underestimate her! 😉

First, a big thanks to everyone who has followed us on this Dungeon Year Design Journal journey. As of this writing, the free digital version has been downloaded 2,700 times and people are starting to post pictures of their journals printed off in their three ring binder. It is so exciting to see what you’re all making - keep them coming!
We are excited to announce that we will launch a crowdfunding campaign on January 3rd, 2023 to get the journals printed!
And today we finalized the details to offer the journals worldwide.
The digital version will remain free, but we wanted to get physical journals in the hands of those who want them. They will be wire-o bound so they lay flat. Inside is 70lb uncoated paper for a solid feel that won’t let ink or colors bleed through to the other side.
We are keeping the campaign low risk, so no stretch goals, but we are offering two journal formats: The full-sized journal and a condensed weekly journal.
We will make an announcement here when the campaign launches, but we also recommend signing up on the campaign page to make sure you get all the updates we post there.

What’s next after the Journal?
The Dungeon Year Design Journal is our first steps into crowdfunding, but it was also a surprise project for us. We have two other projects in the works as we speak:
In February, we are partnering with Milk Toast Studio to launch a crowdfunding campaign as part of Zine Month to make letterpressed GMless player aid cards. A high-quality pack of 12 cards that helps players drive the story in GMless games such as Wanderhome, Sleepaway, and even Banda’s Grove. We are finalizing the artwork for the cards now and can’t wait to start showing off more details.
Then, we are still working on getting final touches on Banda’s Grove complete, including building a legacy campaign book that can sit in the middle of your table. This supplement can house all the details of your adventures in the Grove all in one place that everyone contributes to - a living legacy of the adventures you have together. We are targeting a launch in April/May.
With Banda’s Grove, we are also doing our own Dungeon Year project! A Mega Grove: A massive convergence of campgrounds from across the universe. 52 planar fragments, each with 7 unique details: encounters, NPCs, buildings, creatures, and more. We will release the Mega Grove slowly over time for free. If you’d like to help us make the Mega Grove, or just watch its creation first hand, join our discord server where we’ll work with the community to bring it to life.
