“That is freaky.” Travis says with a shocked expression after Vic showed him the picture she took of Maya and Mia.

Vic laughs as she leans over the beanery counter with Sean Beckett and Robert Sullivan next to her eating their lunches. Jack is also there on his break at Vic’s insistence getting a water bottle from the fridge. She showed the male firefighters and dispatcher the picture and they also agreed with Vic about Mia Knight looking so much like Maya who is also in the beanery drinking a protein shake with an amused face.

“We don’t look that much alike.” Maya repeats to the men who look at her baffled, “We don’t! If you look up close, she has a few more wrinkles than me, her face is sharper and her lips are thinner.”

“Also, she doesn’t have the butt chin.” Jack points out causing Maya to scoff.

“It’s a cleft chin call it that please and it’s one of the many differences between us that I can see and you all can’t. Even my wife can see it.”

Andy chuckles entering the beanery with a smile, “Well she loves you and she’s your wife so it’s her job to make sure you know you’re the only you there is in the world.”

Jack grins at his girlfriend, “So you would be the same if you met a guy who looked like me on the job?”

Andy grins at Jack, “I don’t think I would, nobody has that goofy smile and dopey eyes like you Gibson.”

Jack smiles at that, “You like my goofy smile and dopey eyes.”

Andy smiles, “Yes I do and I know nobody else can pull it off like you.”

Vic groans at the constant flirting between the recently rekindled couple, “We get it you two are in love please save it for after I leave so I don’t barf.”

Travis asks, “What does Maya 2.0 do? Does she run into fires or make everyone feel body shame?”

Andy turns away from Jack to continue the conversation, “She’s a runner she ran track.” Travis shrugs as he figured, “But she’s not a first responder she’s a lobbyist. In short, she’s a political genius who uses suave and charm to get her way.”

“Oh Bishop is right then they're not the same.” Beckett quips causing Sullivan and Travis to chuckle, “I once saw a guy at the grocery store who I swear looked just like me, those things can happen it doesn’t mean their a clone or a twin.”

“I think you’re talking about doppelgangers.”

Vic raises an eyebrow at Travis’s term, “Like The Vampire Diaries?”

Travis grins, “No it’s not a supernatural thing.”

“It seems pretty supernatural to me.” Andy chips in.

“It’s not, doppelgangers are biologically unrelated doubles, we see it all the time in celebrities and historical figures it can happen to us common folks.” He looks at Maya who looks unconvinced, “Your doppelganger as it turns out is a lobbyist from Los Angeles married to a physics nerd with three kids. Isn’t it kind of fun knowing what your double does in her average day as you live yours?”

Maya sighs, “…Assuming she is my doppelganger which she isn’t I guess it was kind of interesting.”

“I wonder what my doppelganger is doing right now?” Vic wonders in amusement, “I bet she’s a graphic designer who delivers fresh water to people in Africa and breaking gorgeous hearts left and right, that’s the dream I have.”

Andy joins in, “Mine is probably a special ops leader with mad sniping skills and badass tattoo’s she does herself up and down her arms.”

“My not related twin is at one of his million-dollar mansions he bought with his parent’s infinity pool.” Jack says with Andy grinning, “He’s probably floating in his large pool, drinking a pina colada out of a coconut and scouring the internet for antiques he’s impulsively buying.”

“Mine is probably straight.” Travis jokes, “With a 300-pound wife and 14 kids.”

Vic smiles at the image, “Now I would pay to see that.” The team chuckles with Vic while Maya grins enjoying the last days she and the team have together before Vic moves.

Four Hours Later

After successfully completing the C-Section Carina and Andrew watch from the nurse’s station into Mia’s room where they can see her lying in bed with her youngest son Phoenix. Her oldest Henry is standing by her side while Spencer holds their baby boy in his arms next to her. Amber is inside monitoring her and smiling at the baby in his arms but not getting distracted from her duties. Amber looks at the brother sister duo through the window and nods her head indicating things are good so far to their relief.

“I will give you two this, you gave that woman a day she will never forget.” Carina quips to Andrew who grins, “So whose idea was it to bring my wife here to meet my patient?”

“It was both of ours, I called, and Amber gave us visual, it was a team effort.”

“And what was the goal?”

“Well, the goal was to show you we were not insane and that you were wrong in saying she looks nothing like Maya. I mean come on you saw those two in the same room, can you honestly say there is nothing freaky going on here?”

Carina sighs and looks at Mia for a moment before shaking her head, “No I don’t see it.”

Andrew groans annoyed, “You are just being stubborn, how can you not see it?”

Carina smiles and explains, “Andrea there is no one like Maya Kathleen DeLuca-Bishop, no one.” Carina says in a loving way regarding her wife, “Can you say there is one person out there who is like Amber Stevie DeLuca?”

Andrew looks back at his wife through the window and sees her charting Mia’s vitals not noticing his gazing. He smirks knowing there is nobody as beautiful, smart, tough and opinionated as the woman he loves. There is no one out there who can spend the day scolding residents when they deserve it and still come home and shower their daughter with the love Amber never had growing up. It still boggles him that someone like her could fall for someone like him and still not see the effect she has on him after all these years.

He turns to Carina with a smile, “Fair enough.”

Carina nods, “Exactly so your plan failed. I’m always right and your always wrong.”

Andrew shakes his head annoyed at the smug grin Carina has, “There’s always next time.”

“You can’t change fate bambino.” Carina tells Andrew in pride and walks away from him confidently and he chuckles at her.

One reason why I think Mila Finelli's mafia books do work for me better than most other (Italian--I did really love Kresley's series) mafia romance novels I've read is that the characters do feel DISTINCT and so do the relationship dynamics.

In a lot of these somewhat darker, more erotic reads, you do get the sense that any of the characters could be switched out for one another. The heroes are always the same types of alphas, the heroines are always the same types of a) virgins or b) defiant rebels who may also still be virgins, and what really sets the books apart are a few bananas scenes here and there, and some distinct sex scenes.

And while I definitely think there are distinct sexual dynamics and kinks at play with each couple (Fausto/Frankie are obviously daddy kink-central, Enzo and Gia are.... generalized freaks with some heavier BDSM by way of CNC vibes, Giulio and Alessio also have some D/s vibes but with a more competitive edge and are very into each other's violence, and Giacomo/Emma are obviously a breeding kink/softer touch vibe) they're also just super different people.

I guess the closest couples would be Fausto and Frankie and Enzo and Gia, but even then... Fausto is a dick, but he's more rational, more doting (see: daddy), and though Frankie is absolutely defiant and strong, I actually think that though she and Fausto have more of a traditional partnership in terms of gender than Enzo and Gia (which also could be because Frankie wants a billion kids and yes she has her MBA but she's very much a wife and mom first, whereas Gia is more about her career, which keeps them from being too similar). Enzo and Gia are more into the defined D/s shit sexually, but you get the sense that she has more control in the relationship and that, at the end of the day, he is very much... her bitch. Enzo and Gia have a very similar age gap to Fausto and Frankie, but Fausto and Frankie have more of a care-focused DD/lg relationship, whereas Enzo and Gia thrive on the friction of her giving as good as she gets.

And Alessio and Giulio, aside from the obvious of being the only queer relationship in the series, are very much coded as D/s as well... But not as inflexibly as the previous two couples. Aside from them switching it up in the bedroom a little, there's also a lot of space for Alessio to take care of Giulio. Like, Giulio kinda doesn't know shit about what he's doing lol, whereas Alessio is hypercompetent (which also makes sense, as Fausto for sure spoiled Giulio and Alessio has been in essentially a different class his entire life). So while Giulio is more sexually dominant, Alessio is really the stronger, steadier, and more threatening partner otherwise. And again, they both really get off on watching each other do what they do best, which is: crime.

I do think Giacomo and Emma have the softest relationship in the series--but it's not so much because she's this kind of babe in the woods virgin (and I will say, I did love that Frankie and Gia were NOT lol) but because Giacomo is just a much more tender guy. Like, yes, Fausto and Enzo both also had loved ones, but I think that because they'd both been running their shit longer than Giacomo had before he met Emma, they had these very set roles. Fausto and Enzo come off as more brutal, and honestly more crazy (like, Enzo is THE CRAZIEST for sure, but Fausto is a fucking nutball). Giacomo seems like a dude who's good at killing people and doing mafia stuff, but it's really like? His day job. It's not his life and it doesn't feel like his culture, even, which makes sense because he was on the fringes of the types of levels Fausto and Enzo have always been in, because his father and brother kept him separate from it. Even Giulio is more connected to that space than Giacomo, because he was groomed to take over for years.

I think it would be very easy to rely on these great sex scenes and wacky plots she writes, but the thing that does make it clear that Mila has the chops (.... and it also makes it clear that she's very experienced, lol, and someone who has had to write series with very individualized characters for professional editors in the past........) is that the characters are very DIFFERENT. Like, Frankie and Gia may both have their partners' balls in their pockets, but you see Frankie do a wheedling kind of little girl pouting thing to get her way with Fausto because she knows he looooves it, whereas Gia is like LISTEN UP ASSHOLE with Enzo (and it makes the relationship the best because nobody else can do that with him, Enzo and Gia are the greatest, thanks for coming to my Ted Talk). Giacomo is willing to let Emma go in a way that Fausto, Enzo, and honestly I would say Giulio too after working out some things, really aren't okay with. He's probably the best guy out of the series, on a moral level, while also being a scary murder man.

(Except for maybe Alessio? Because Alessio is also a scary murder man, but he literally just does it for the cash or to protect Giulio. It's PURE BUSINESS.)

I find the distinctiveness of the characters really cool, especially when I reread the books, and that is probably why I've had a hard time finding a series that really clicks for me in the same way within the sort of Italian mafia genre.

(That, and: so much of the other books center on Italian-American mafia stuff and that shit DOES NOT HAVE THE SAUCE the way Mila's Italy-set books do. Like, be real here, the Italian-American mafia has not been raking in this kind of cash for DECADES.)

What to expect: I’m currently drafting my first novel, so I’m a bit of a rookie to the writing ropes. My learning process is being documented through the blog—this time three months ago, I didn’t know what a comp title or a conlang was! I especially love worldbuilding and character development, and I’m always down for ask days and tag games (even though it takes me forever to answer, since college is kicking my ass). Don’t feel limited to ask days- I always welcome random asks, messages, and chatting! Moodboards, aesthetics, and character playlists are some of my favorite things. I’m slowly branching into writing nsfw content. 

I’m a high fantasy writer—I like the freedom of creating a new world and not being constrained by the rules of ours. That said, I’m also a history major, and that bleeds through into my writing a lot (my main WIP is Ancient Rome inspired!). I love writing about love, and most of the time I’m a sucker for a happy ending. The romantic subplots of my series are my pride and joy.

In terms of reading, I love fantasy, historical fiction, fairytale and myth retellings, and anything in a royal setting! I’m open to almost anything, though!

Now, onto the WIP!

My main WIP is an adult fantasy series called City of Marble.

+ Ancient Rome inspired fantasy world, with some Italian Renaissance influences

+ Soft magic systems, court politics, and traveling around a beautiful fantasy world

+ I love my very smart characters who are also incredibly dumb. I’ve got at least five of them.

+ I am weak for in-universe writings of any kind. I’m slowly planning epigraphs for every chapter.

The main CoM trilogy focuses on my MC, Novellia, and starts with The Traitor’s Heir.

Even in the less violent North, aristocrats don’t want the taint of associating with sorcerers. If Livia learned her secret, it could be her end.

🔥 Rhapsody of Fire!! 🔥

Italian symphonic power metal, their albums tell stories and they have several sagas now. I'd recommend "Legendary Years" as a mix of re-recordings of older songs.

Their current saga is fantastic. In order it goes "The Eighth Mountain," "Glory for Salvation," and the final album comes out at the end of this month.

Kreel, the protagonist, is an amazing character and his story really helped me process a lot of Big Emotions. He is an extremely emotional, sensitive, flawed character who chugs Respect Women juice and I love him. He is also a cursed undead wizard with a sword and time magic.

If you like Christopher Lee he also did bits of narration for some of their songs before he passed. And an incredible accompaniment to "Magic of the Wizard's Dream" 😭

Also? Giacomo Voli (current vocalist) confirmed nonbinary queer and super nice. I met him in person when I saw them live. He gave me a hug and I told him how Kreel's story helped me accept me embrace my identity (trans masc, neurodivergent)

He was very compassionate about the state of trans rights in America and his fancy perfume stayed on my shirt for two days. 🥺

I've spent my late teens and my whole twenties in fandom spaces, and it really helped me build my observing and critical thinking skills.

So it's really fun for me to read classic literature (and generally old pieces) again as an adult, free from interpretations imposed by school, and discovering that a lot of those authors and pieces were gay and neurodivergent as fuck.

And not only the most obvious and explicit, like The portrait of Dorian Grey, which is so very obviously gay that not even school could shield it. Or like Emily Dickinson.

But more like... Sherlock Holmes? The sherlock in love with *HIS* Watson (Doyle's words, not mine)?

Romeo and Juliet? Yeah, we all know about Mercutio.

Dracula? So. Gay.

Anne of Green Gables? Autistic girlie. Probably also a maladaptive daydreamer.

Any times pirates are involved? Gaaaaaaaayyy!

And you know what? Italian schools are particularly worried with not letting the gayTM get into kids minds, so we study a very curated and supposedly straight list of authors, but joke's on them cause...

The divine comedy? Dante and Virgil's relationship is AT LEAST suspect... Yeah yeah, he can rant about Beatrice all he wants. I read what I read.

Gabriele D'annunzio? Obsessed with sex and probably queer.

No but I think what makes Giacomo an emotionally effective muse for me is that, he really is just a teenager. He's queer and ND without fully knowing. He stays up late watching and making stupid videos with his friends, playing video games and eating bad food. He had a favorite machine at the arcade and wastes his very little pocket money on it. He has opinions on pop culture and memes.

He has big, fantastic dreams about a famous musician, proudly watches his small following on Bandcamp, and probably is the type of guy that personally responds to comments on his music. He's just a dude. He's a relatable teenager, going through it™️, and he could be so normal and well off, but, his parents and the education system failed him. And he does bad things in order to get by. It's sad because it's relatable and realistic to what happens in the world. And it's preventable.
