hey so i'm gonna talk about pro-shippers because i feel like none of you have critical thinking skills.
please, if you are going to read this, read to the end because there are multiple parts to my argument.
SOMETHING IMPORTANT: i don't think it is okay to doxx, harass, or send death threats to people on the internet! if you send death threats to people, you are awful! if you go out of your way to harass people when they tell you to leave them alone, you are awful! if someone says something you don't like, talk with them like a normal fucking person jesus christ! if you repeatedly harass a pro-shipper, you are not helping them get any better!
firstly, in terms of "problematic" stuff in mainstream media, most component people can recognize when a piece of media is commenting on something with the use of a relationship/something problematic as a metaphor. just because something exists on-screen doesn't necessarily mean the message of the media endorses it. this is why you never (hopefully) see anyone getting upset about murder in movies. the piece of media is not saying murder is good. it is using it to make a commentary/characterize someone/etc.
now that we have set that precedent, we can move on to pro-shipping in fandom spaces. pro-shipping in fandom spaces if often fundamentally different between than the more general category of just "relationships in media." in fandom spaces, the tendency when creating art, writing fics, posting headcannons, etc. is for the purpose of personal/audience enjoyment. this is why pro-shipping is more often problematic within fandoms. if a person did want to create/add to problematic ships for a purpose other than getting off to it, that would be a different story! thats fine!
unfortunately, however, many pro-shippers do not proship for the literary merit/symbolism/characterization etc. many of them do it because they find the idea of parent-child or sibling-sibling relationships attractive. this is where the problem is. they symbol itself is not the problem, its the message/purpose of the work/art/headcannon itself.
i hear a lot of people talking about how pro-shipping is often a coping mechanism for dealing with trauma a person has experienced. my response to that? KEEP IT TO YOURSELF AND GO TO THERAPY!!!! if you are having to resort to jacking off to fictional incest to cope, then clearly you need the help of a professional to work through your issues! if you cannot for whatever reason, still keep it to yourself!
it is well understood that people are influenced by the opinions of people around them/what they see and interact with. putting out bullshit on the internet that portrays problematic relationships as desirable can one, create a pedophile safe space, and two, unintentionally (or maybe even intentionally!) expose children to these types of relationships and make it seem normal in their brains, which could cause them to not speak up about it if something bad does actually happen to them! even if a person shouldn't be in a space, they are! it doesn't harm you to not post the porn you wrote of that one kid and his dad from south park. and that only talks about adult only spaces, i have seen a shit ton of pro-shippers on tiktok, a platform marketed towards minors.
ANOTHER SIDE NOTE (i have a lot to say and am terrible at organizing my thoughts srry) is that a lot of times pro-shippers infiltrate general fandom hashtags. a child who is scrolling though a bluey hashtag on tiktok should not have any risk of running into someone on the internet describing how bluey's dad would r4p3 her!
you may think that because you are only talking about fictional characters and "its a coping mechanism" its okay, but it is most certainly not! not all coping mechanisms are healthy and what you post on the internet most CERTAINLY has a real effect on people. this is basic media literacy and critical thinking, guys. stop posting child/sibling smut headcannons on the internet! it is absolutely vile!
with all of that being said, (i said this at the beginning but i am going to say it again) i still dont think it is okay to doxx, harass, or send death threats to people on the internet! if you send death threats to people, you are awful! if you go out of your way to harass people when they tell you to leave them alone, you are awful! if someone says something you dont like, talk with them like a normal fucking person jesus christ! if you repeatedly harass a pro-shipper, you are not helping them get any better!
(im gonna put a bunch of proshipper hashtags at the bottom of this to reach the targeted demographic, i am NOT a proshipper, i am NOT an "anti anti" and i do NOT believe proshippers are valid, again, this is just for reach just to be clear)

My dad just messaged me going "seeing all this 'Save OFMD' stuff made me realise some things never change" and attached a load of pictures he'd dug up from fifteen years ago of me in my 'Save Ianto Jones' fan campaign era.
As much as it made me laugh, it also made me think about something that I've not talked about before: the fact that this is what introduced me to campaigning.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I was a very lost queer (undiagnosed autistic) kid, bullied and lonely and keenly aware that there were a lot of bad things happening in the world, but I had no idea how to begin to even try to change things, or even any awareness that there was anything I could do to change anything.
And then my favourite show killed off my favourite character, and I suddenly accidentally found myself swept up in the mobilisation (without even realising that that was what was happening) of the fan community around me. It's where I learned about the idea of campaigning as, y'know, a thing that I could do. It introduced me to the concept that I could actively try and do things to make a change I wanted to see in the world.
And now that's my actual literal real world adult job. This is what I do in my 9-to-5. Some of the skills I learned and developed at seventeen (and the lessons from the fuck-ups - oh boy there were many of those because I was seventeen) trying to get the BBC to un-dead my favourite bisexual welshman are skills that I now use every day to actually create change (such as writing persuasive emails to influence a specific target).
And I've also used them outside of the 9-5 in the smaller grassroots campaigns I've been involved with. For example, the skills I learned from a fan campaign when I was a teenager helped me play a small part in stopping the deportation of young autistic man, and potentially saved his life.
There's a HUGE amount of crossover/symbiosis between fan campaigns and 'real world' campaigning. A huge number of people involved in these fan campaigns are already involved in organising (or at the very least supporting/donating) for 'real world' issues. And, if they're not, then a fan campaign may well be their introduction to campaigning - a 'wow ok so I can actually do this' moment that inspires them to start pushing for change on other issues too.
It's fantastic if someone goes 'hey, I managed to call Netflix about picking up Our Flag Means Death, which has made me realise maybe I can also cope with picking up the phone to call my political representatives about [insert other issue here]' - and if the strategies they put in place to help them do the Netflix phone call also help them do the political phone calls as well, then that's absolutely brilliant.
The same with getting experience/confidence writing emails, or learning how to create and push a hashtag on social media, or realising the power of taking mass actions (like signing a petition). It even goes so far as inspiring people to follow up a fan campaign donation with an additional donation to a good cause, and helping direct them to some good charities/initiatives to donate to (because sometimes knowing which are the right ones to send your money too is very hard). These are all skills and experiences that can help build both confidence and understanding of how to get involved with campaigning for change, and these are absolutely transferrable to an infinite number of causes.
It's about people feeling empowered to take action: feeling like they can do it, that it's tangible to them as something they can do, and giving them the tools to do it. The endgame in real world advocacy and campaigning is getting stuff done: petitions signed, phone calls made, emails sent, donations collected, rallies attended.
And no one (outside of the internet moral purity police) cares if your journey getting there started with a fan campaign.

Week 12: Crowd Sourcing in Times of Crisis
During a crisis, crowdsourcing is using a large number of people's knowledge, skills, and resources to solve urgent problems, typically through online platforms. In the event of a catastrophe, whether it be a natural disaster, a public health emergency, or a humanitarian crisis, this approach uses the brainpower of many individuals to collect and share current information, organise available resources, and aid affected communities.
Accurate and timely information is crucial for effective reaction and decision-making in times of crisis. With crowdsourcing, everyone can use social media, smartphone apps, or specialised platforms to report events, transmit updates, or offer first-hand opinions. Ushahidi and other social media hashtags allow anyone affected by natural disasters like hurricanes and earthquakes to report the damage, ask for help, and share location-specific information. In the event of an emergency, the real-time data can be invaluable in helping rescuers assess the situation and direct resources to the hardest hit areas. “One can easily identify the location, damages, severity of any disaster. Also there is a mechanism though which one can post the news on any social media.” (Mondal et al. 2017)
Quick distribution of necessities like food, medicine, and cash can be facilitated through crowdsourcing. Facebook Fundraisers, GoFundMe, and Kickstarter are just a few of the platforms that organisations and individuals can use to quickly collect money for relief efforts. Also, by matching skills and availability with needs, crowdsourcing makes it easier to organise volunteers. Masks for All and similar initiatives saw individuals all around the globe making and distributing masks to vulnerable populations and healthcare workers during the COVID-19 pandemic. Thanks to everyone working together online, this was a reality.
Creative and adaptable problem-solving skills are essential in times of crisis. In order to solve complex problems, crowdsourcing encourages a diverse group of people to share their knowledge, expertise, and ideas. In the event of a public health emergency, academics and medical experts can collaborate on therapy development and improvement utilising platforms like Foldit and OpenAI. In addition, online competitions and hackathons can be organised to bring people together to solve technical problems; for example, making contact tracking apps or resource management platforms.
In times of disaster, crowdsourcing can provide much-needed psychological and emotional support in addition to practical information and resources. Support groups and online communities provide a safe space for people to talk to one another, share advice, and lift each other up emotionally. “Social media are capable of revealing some aspects of the mental and emotional state of a nation”(Alexander 2013). Support networks on platforms like Reddit, Facebook Groups, and niche forums can be invaluable in helping people cope with the emotional and mental challenges that crisis situations inevitably bring.
In a nutshell, crowdsourcing is a way for people to pool their resources, share current knowledge, find solutions to problems, and help their communities during times of need. This strategy enhances the effectiveness and efficiency of disaster response efforts by utilising the diverse knowledge and perspectives of a broad group of individuals. As a result, more lives are saved and communities are rebuilt.

One barista who works at a Starbucks in Kentucky informed U.S. meals publication Eater this week that round 1 / 4 of the drinks she makes have some type of customization, including that prospects usually didn’t take into account that employees hadn’t really heard of so-called “secret menu” objects earlier than. “A buyer ordered a blended latte with strawberry chilly foam by a secret menu title, and after I handed it out, they mentioned, ‘That’s not what it seems like’ and confirmed it to me on their telephone,” she mentioned. “It brings me to a screeching halt, attempting to determine what they need, make it, really making it, and extra occasions than not, remaking it, each as a result of I tousled someplace or as a result of the particular person despatched it again—both as a result of it didn’t appear like the images they’d or as a result of they didn’t just like the style.” One other Starbucks barista, who has labored at shops in New York and Ohio, informed Eater round two-thirds of the drinks he has to make are “a hack drink or a TikTok drink.” “I’ve begun to unironically dread seeing youthful prospects come into the shop,” he mentioned, noting that the variety of specialty drinks being ordered had elevated over the previous yr and have been turning into more and more complicated. On the finish of September, a stressed-out Starbucks worker’s TikTok video urging prospects to cease attempting to recreation the system went viral. “Simply get a Pumpkin Spice Latte,” he mentioned, explaining that menu “hacks” are creating robust working circumstances for the espresso chain’s baristas. Final week, one other barista’s TikTok video racked up greater than 4.2 million views, with the girl revealing she and her colleagues had canceled an order as a result of a buyer bought a 5-cent bag on the Starbucks app after which positioned their total order within the “additional request” part in a bid to drastically scale back the worth of their drink.   Nevertheless, some baristas are on board with the rising menu hack development, sharing their very own content material on-line that suggestions espresso followers off on open up extra or cheaper menu choices. The thing is, I never accepted the fact that Dean and Cas died the way they did.. For me, season 15 went on till episode 18 and that was the basically season finale. Supernatural never really ended, it's like I just stopped watching it like I did a few years ago. And I'm hoping probably at some point they'll put something out again and I'll watch it and it'll be the happy ending we're looking for.

Chapter Thirteen: Marvolo
Tumblr media
His eyes were burning; smarting and itching so much that he wanted to tear them out of his head.
Tom was about to cry.
He was not going to cry, and especially not in the middle of the hallway, empty or not. The last time he allowed tears to sting his eyes like this, he was nearly dead.
So, he tilted his head up, screwed up his face, and focused on his anger instead.
Abraxas's voice. Mudblood.
Mudblood scum. That's what you are; you can't deny it anymore.
Tom let out a shriek, flinging his bag down against the floor. The thin, cheap fabric ripped easily, sending all his books tumbling out.
He snatched up one of them — it was a library book — Tom didn't care — and grabbed the first few pages in a quivering fist, crumpling them under his rage. He screamed, ripped them clean from the binding, felt a bit better, and did it again.
Rip, tear, scream. Repeat. Rip, tear, scream. Repeat.
He heard a soft plip, and stopped, surprised that a tear had fallen.
Now, the page was wet. A single droplet of water was spreading, bleeding out across the paper.
Germany invades Czechslovakia. Tom Riddle discovers the secret of his birth.
