I’m subscribed to Extra History (”always have a plan...”) over on YouTube. Highly recommended as a quick-reference source for all sorts of people, times and places.
That quote, from the series on Bismarck (”Bismarck had a plan; Bismarck ALWAYS had a plan!”) is an example of how their witty presentations can stick in the mind, even one as cluttered with irrelevancies as mine.
Watch the ones on the First Crusade - ”Why let (insert sensible behaviour here) get in the way of a good Crusade?” - and The South Sea Bubble - ”It was Walpole...” - for more ear-worm-like examples. :->
They also do a series called “So You Haven’t Read...”, and that screencap is from one I caught just the other day: “SYHR: The Sandman”.
@neil-gaiman, have you seen it? :-D

Hoping it doesn't happen where you live is not a plan.

Chenford + "break up with him"
Advanced warning - trigger alert - active shooter one shot. Very different than the lighthearted tone I usually take… no major character deaths.
Tamara was in the library when the first shot rang out. She was listening to a play list Lucy made her of 1990s song mash ups like Pony and Toxic. Lucy was hoping to expand Tamara’s musical knowledge- lucky for her, Tamara found the mash ups to be perfect study music…something about untangling one song into two original songs made concepts “stick in her brain more cleanly.”
She was reviewing her “great psychiatrist” flash cards, while singing along to Britney “your toxic, I’m slipping under” - thank you Karl Jung! When she heard a “pop! Pop! along with a horrific scream that did not match the music. Now concerned, she removed one of her AirPods and listened more intently. “You cannot keep him from me! “ pop pop pop ! Holy shit!
Because she lived with and counted cops as her family, Lucy and Tim had done a walk through of each of the buildings Tamara spent time in on campus, finding nooks and crannies she could hide in, if the exit routes closest to her became compromised. They created an action plan for her to get out, call 9-1-1 and text Lucy and Tim. She had to text both of them for the Calvary to come running. Never had Tamara been more grateful for them than in this moment.
She took off her boots and out on the running shoes she kept in her bag, grabbed her phone and left everything else there. Tamara sent Lucy and Tim : 🔫 📚 🆘 (shooter, library, people are hurt send help). She then fell to the floor and looked for the feet of fellow students. Luckily, she didn’t see anyone, so she crawled towards the emergency exit. While in motion - she heard a voice she recognized say “ Liza! Don’t do this, please. I don’t want to die!“
Tamara crab-crawled over to the balcony overlooking the atrium/lobby, where she saw a dark haired girl holding a gun pointing at a blonde haired girl with blood running down her arm, and a brown haired boy at their feet. “Then you shouldn’t have told me to break up with him.” Tamara screamed, and the dark hair girl paused, switched to a different gun and started wildly shooting in the direction of Tamara’s voice. The change allowing the blonde to run towards the doors.
Tamara felt a few bullets fly by her as she ran to the exit and headed down and out of the building and over to one of the ambulances where she promptly collapsed.
Across town, Tim and Lucy were nearing the end of a boring shift making plans for dinner and a movie at his place when Lucy, then Tim got Tamara’s text. Lucy looked down and grabbed Tim’s arm, and said in a panicked voice, “check your phone Tim”. Tim noted the change in tone, and picked up his phone and said, “oh shit. Call it in”- then pulled a U-turn, flipped on the sirens and sped towards Tamara’s campus. Lucy called central saying “this is 7-Adam- 100, report of active shooter at CULA- main library. One shooter, multiple weapons, multiple students inside. I repeat, one shooter confirmed. Send backup, R As, SWAT and airship.”
In the 15 minutes it took Tim and Lucy to speed across town, Lucy had considered all possible outcomes and prayed Tamara would be by the ambulances when they got there. She started panicking until, Tim grabbed her hand and rubbed her knuckles to calm her, while explaining how Tim would make contact with whomever is in charge and Lucy would scan the ambulances. Tim knew Lucy would need to confirm her friend was breathing before she could do anything else.
By the time they got to campus, the situation was under control and Liza was in custody, whisked away to a hospital clinging to life. Tim stayed with Grey to get a handle on what happened, while Lucy sped over to the ambulances where she found Tamara and a blonde girl hugging and crying while an EMT was wrapping Tamara’s arm in a bandage. Lucy swooped in and grabbed both women in a bear hug. “Oh thank god. Thank god. I thought I lost you.” Before Tamara could explain what happened, Sergeant Bradford, picked her up and lifted her into his arms, squeezing her close and crying. “Don’t scare me like that again. I can’t lose you.”
When Tim had a grip on his emotions, he put Tamara down on the ground and she chuckled. “Colette - these are my “police parents.” Meet Dadford and Lucy. We wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for them. And they wouldn’t be in love if not for me!” Colette stood up and thanked both Tim and Lucy, saying that after they had done the walkthrough with Tamara, the next day she and Tamara mapped out a plan as well to do whatever possible to keep the other from harm. Miraculously it worked, as both young women were alive.
Epilogue: as part of the *community policing* initiative Officer Nolan presented to city council, a class on Situational Awareness for young people was created and taught by Lucy, Tamara and Collette. To better prepare the general public to survive an active shooter situation.
Lastly, as part of her “healing process” when Tim and Lucy were fawning all over her, she told them to kiss already and get to a point where they could be a family for real. She teased them relentlessly until they did.

Easy to write, but hard to end.
Seriously though, if there are places you frequent on a regular basis, protect yourself. Learn the floor plan, know where the exits are, and have an escape plan or place to hide in the back of your mind should you be in the same position.
I’m from Colorado - home of Columbine, the movie theater shooting, multiple planned parenthood shootings, and the grocery store shooting in Boulder near my mom’s house. I am no longer in Colorado, but I still activate my situational awareness whenever I leave home. Because we unfortunately just never know what could happen.
