Peridot and Unlearning (Internalized & Externalized) Homophobia

i.e., here's why peridot's redemption arc is partially (a metaphor?) about unlearning homophobia

the title sounds crazy but bear with me here.

let's start off with saying NO, fusion does not = romantic love. that's an age old discourse and it can be so easily solved by stating there are many different forms of love, and sometimes fusion is just for power (which is a form of love in-of itself, albeit fucked; the love for power or toxic love) HOWEVER, in many cases, such as Garnet's, it most certainly is about romantic love. so to keep it as brief as possible, thats what we have in mind in this post. it's gay love okay.

now, let's talk about the scene i just captioned. this is from the episode "too far," which is an episode about developing a crush and accidentally hurting them in the process of trying to impress them. (however you want to look at it, but thats how i interpret it) the fact it starts off with casual homophobia is important, coz it shows peridot still has a lot of prejudices despite recently becoming part of the team, which is full of gay people, undeniably.

peridot's redemption arc is partially about coming to terms with your sexuality, retraining your mind from internalized homophobia after being raised in such a homophobic society/household, and becoming proud of your sexuality / identity.

OBSERVE:

MORE EVIDENCE THAT PERIDOT'S REDEMPTION ARC IS COMING TO TERMS WITH BEING GAY / UNLEARNING HOMOPHOBIA:

being frustrated about joining a lesbian/gay gang

coming from a society where homosexuality is forbidden

telling off your mom by saying youre joining some rebel lesbians/gays to fight her oppressive society

wearing pride flags (stars) everywhere after coming out

looking up to experienced lesbians (Garnet)

the scissoring joke (from "too far." if you know you know)

furthermore, i thought it'd be fair to include peridot learning how to respect how people identify in other ways, such as names / how they prefer to be addressed. this, most of the time, goes hand-in-hand with homophobia.

peridot, narrating: "he also said he wanted me to stop calling him "the" steven." steven: "its just, steven!" peridot: "i told him i'd call him whatever i want!" [hiss] peridot: "he told me that was rude."

i should add she also eventually learns how to respect Garnet's whole deal in the same episode (log date 7 15 2) which was also a huge moment in her unlearning homophobia. which, btw if you dont know or dont remember, Garnet does by comparing herself to peridot's (assuming) gay ship between Percy and Pierre from Camp Pining Hearts, saying she was the optimized version of herself (the reason peridot "ships" them; theyre the best team logically according to her analysis ship chart)

anyways, now the biggest most obvious point is the fact that peridot actually is gay. i've referred to this episode a few times now, but thats becoz it really is a huge point in proving my 'thesis';

in the episode "too far," peridot is shown to get obsessed with impressing amethyst. peridot experiences something they havent yet up until this point: a crush. i mean, you can interpret it as you wish, but thats how i saw it. the butterflies, the obsession with making someone laugh, the fact peridot states amethyst is objectively the best gem of the crystal gems and emphasizes "damaging her standing with the best gem here" with their apology to amethyst after hurting her feelings.

Mission; scarlet stars fantasy au (working on finding a name)

-Prologue; kayl-

Notes before story; i dont write multi chapter fics often. And character behaviors might not be 100% accurate to those when the full game comes out(relying on the demo rn), but im having fun! Also, since its still small, MSS was originally created by my buddy, boris! As an instaronpa. Now its becoming a full on game and hes directing it, alongside one other persob and a team. Id give the demo a try! Its on itch.io(? I think thats what its called).

Promotion aside, ive never written a huge fantasy stoey before. Mostly vampires n dragons. Ive been having fun with this though! I get to write and design fantasy appearances for the characters. (Still fighting the urge to give bear-taur mezsha a bear nose...).

Also, while i created a few ocs for this au, Ivernake is not one. Hes from the original mss!! (Not in the demo tho).

Cordelia and casper are two of said ocs. Others that might show up are; atlas, caspian, athena(named after the greek god), and a few unnamed dragon ocs.

Also i hope i wrote this right im not great at writing in the perspective of characters who are meant to be the big bads of the story. And i hope the hunters are written at least okay. I have covid rn and i havent been able to do anything othwr than write and overthink and im overthinking rn lol. Im trying. Not beta read really.

“Captain!,” A heavily scarred man shouted, holding onto a net and heaving it onboard, “We got one of them fish beasts!”

Kayl walked down the stairs very slowly, gripping the hand rail and walking to the flailing mermaid cautiously. “Get some water, now. We need them alive.” He ordered as he squatted down in front of them.

The crewmate scrambled away to grab a bucket, leaving Kayl to talk to the so-called beast.

“Oi,” he started, “What’s your name.”

The mermaid met his gaze, yellow eyes glinting in fear as they trembled. “...Cordelia.”

The red-head glanced over his shoulder as the crewmate returned. The bucket had droplets of water dribbling down the side, causing the mermaid’s eyes to widen in desperation. She reached her hand out and caught a droplet in her palm, sighing with relief and struggling to catch more.

“Cordelia. I have a deal for you,” Kayl said roughly, knocking on the deck to get her attention, “if you tell me where to find harpies and avians, I’ll set you free.”

The bluenette mermaid looked hesitant for a few seconds before she nodded. “Okay. There’s a a flock of harpies north of here. You’ll know you’re close to them when you pass a large oak.”

Kayl nodded, grabbing the bucket from his crewmate and splashing some water onto Cordelia. “One more thing before i let you out of the net, do you know if any of those birdies is in contact with a mage?”

Cordelia wrinkled her nose at that, slapping her tail on the deck in frustration. “I don’t. Please, let me free now.”

Kayl stood up with a sigh, waving his head. “Well, i am a man of my word… Casper, undo the net and toss the fish overboard. There’s one more of these beasts that I must talk to.”

The creature had been on the ship for days, refusing to address the crewmates or the captain. They had been starved, dehydrated, even threatened. But they refused to speak. Kayl was sure it’d change today.

“Moth,” he said smoothly, briskly making his way to the cage, “are ya ready to speak? Name first. And then I’ll ask questions.”

The moth-creature looked up gloomily, their eyes sunken with exhaustion and hunger and thirst. “...Ivernake.”

“I’ve heard of ya. Famous boxer, i think? Must make loooots of money. I got a proposal for ya; if you give us a few thousand gold, we’ll let ya leave! Deal?” Kayl stuck his hand in the cage, cracking a grin.

Ivernake scoffed, smacking his hand away. “You aren’t getting anything from me. No matter what you and your scum crewmates do, i’m not gonna give you anything for my freedom if it risks others like myself being hurt. I’d rather die.”

The captain’s face became a sneer. “Then die you will.” He hissed, drawing the sword from his hip and planting it directly in the middle of the moth’s back.

Just as he drew his blade out and let the boxer fall to the ground, his crewmates broke into a riot. “CAPTAIN!”, one yelled. “SHE’S BACK!” Another screamed.

Kayl dove for cover before looking up. That purple-haired vulture had made a return, her arms full of bottles and her wings flapping furiously against the wind.

Drop, smash, drop, smash. It started with small yellow bursts, but then it grew larger. The ship began to sink, the cages began to slip around on the deck. His crewmates were wailing and abandoning ship.

It took a lot of effort for Kayl to stand up, but he managed. The last thing he saw before he slammed into the water was the lifeless, unforgiving, eyes of Ivernake.

He didn’t feel remorse, though. He felt angry. He couldn’t die now, he refused to. He swam against the tide and gasped for air, watching as his ship sank to the dark abyss– and a feeling of hatred engulfed his heart. He watched as the vulture dove down for one single cage, dragging it up in her talons and calling for help.

Three more avians flew in and lifted the cage with the lifeless body inside.

How many times had that same group come to sink his ship, how many times had he lost a crewmate and some good money? He couldn’t keep count. He was mad, and he certainly wanted those birds gone for good.

in re: what philippa is doing prior to the arc: just lil science missions. i wanna say shes done some triage before, so shes probably been in a warzone as a field medic by this point. i dont think shed be necessarily choosing short term missions for the sake of hearing news about her sister, i think shed do what shes assigned? (not really sure how it works tbH) and its more of an intuitive feeling just kinda eating at her. I DONT HAVE A NAME FOR THE SHIP(s), nothing too important or flashy. i dont think shed work on galaxy class or w/e the family ships are.

in re: time duration of things in general for the arc???: current influencers are like:::::::: its not enough time to where starfleet's concerned to go look for them in the DQ, but they havent contacted starfleet in a while (maybe the mission called for "comm silence") but regardless, it doesnt sit well with philippa. it also has to be enough time for amelia's ship to like, get out to the DQ for their mission, for things to go wrong, for her to take charge, for the ship to MAYBE??? be destroyed (hmmm put a pin here maybe theyll need the ship to transport crew……), for the crew to get separated/captured/enslaved/killed, for amelia to try and survive on her own, for her to get captured by the Kazon and eventually rise in status to command alongside Sessen,,,, develop their friendship,,,,, they seem a little friendship platonic with benefits to me,,, might change my mind on that idk. ANYWAY enough time for their Kazon sect to fall apart/be defeated, sessen to die, have a few months of amelia nomadically wandering the DQ again and be slightly pregnant (can be four months, can be less if u wanna heck w/ gestation) my brain wants to guess around a year???, just cuz i dont wanna waste too much time on this arc when i gotta shove philippa into command track and CAPTAIN. and it'd be like another year of philippa searching for her by the time theyre reunited.

Maje name for Amelia? not sure if id wanna do that or not, seems like something she'd adopt and then disinherit when she loses everything she built with the Kazon sect her and Sessen were in

Jace was the only one philippa confided in about leaving to go find her sister. given she's an experimental shuttle test pilot we were thinking she'd help Philippa steal a confidential secret spacecraft Starfleet's been making. :) Not super sure what all is quirky and secret and special about it rn but ITS SOMETHIN.

Not super sure what happens to the rest of Amelia’s starship crew? If any of them are found, how do they get home? PUTTING A PIN IN THAT ONE, i see a few possibilities but nothing super uuuuuh Solid haha. YEAH I DONT KNOW HOW EXACTLY IM GONNA GO ABOUT THE CREW,,,,, but i figure thats probably A GOAL TO HAVE. i figure for sure amelia's captain is dead and it put her in that command position and she didnt like it and everything went amuck under her leadership blah blah blah i was thinking like, maybe if philippa has this experimental spacecraft this whole time, maybe she ends up using that, giving it to the crew to get home at some point,,,, but IM NOT SURE, seems like things could get overpopulated rather quickly, i also figure a lot of them are dead,,,,,,,,,,,,, id have to think about what weird quirky dangerous things you could do with a classified starfleet ship. ANOTHER IDEA is that maybe Amelia's crew's starship is crashlanded somewhere, and like, its abandoned, but as Philippa and Ed find more crew members, they start getting more and more people to work on repairing the ship??? maybe they use the lil craft Philippa stole to get around, but most of them are on this crummy planet working on the ship while Philippa and Ed are out searching for more of them??? i dunno haha.

in re: how Ed meets up with Philippa out in the DQ: one idea id had was maybe theyd meet in an alien bazaar or something, Philippa getting into trouble because shes secretly carrying a starfleet comm badge to communicate and gets captured or something bc the locals hate Voyager, Ed gets her out and they escape together.

Amelia finding out she’s pregnant while she’s still with the Kazon and Sessen, just ‘cause I think they’d talk about raising baby by Kazon standards and tradition and talk about the importance of names. I think "Sessen" would have been the name Seska gave him when he was born and then he kept it rather than earning an adult name for himself, Amelia has a weird history with her name as well. She’s nervous about raising their son here, but buries those fears underneath the assurance that they’re together.

I was thinking that in the time after Amelia loses Sessen and escapes the other Kazon sects and everything that she'd kinda just drift from place to place trying to survive making ends meet doing weird jobs and trying to stay hidden. Philippa and Ed find Amelia temporarily living on a planet or in a cluster of asteroids as a space racer maybe? She’s like a little visibly preggers…

philippa midwifing for her sister as a field medic who hasnt delivered a baby but she like Kinda knows what shes doing

in re: Ed's thoughts about Suspiria dying::: i think Ed has a very unique perspective on life and death, going around studying other cultures' religions, i think both him and her would have an understanding and acceptance of things by the end of their time together. like suspiria's EFFECTIVELY the last of her kind; string theory ends with all of the Nacene "ascending" and Suspiria is presumed dead so shes not there the entire book. and LIKE, my idea with that is just that shes unknowingly searching for her people to no avail the whole time. :^) anyway Ed and Suspiria's WHOLE THING is finding weird little alien short term solutions to help keep Suspiria alive so she can return and replenish herself in the nacene realm Exosia,,, which unbeknownst to her is impossible now hohoho :3c I DIGRESS THOUGH ed's perspective on it likeeeeee i think he'd miss her but also be happy for her in a weird way that she was finally ready to move on from grasping onto life and all that. :^) dark kermit me wants to have her die protecting/saving Amelia's hypothetical baby boy but I DUNNOOOOOOOO hehe :3

Philippa and Amelia inevitably returning home to Starfleet with the remaining crew members of Amelia’s ship. Starfleet pardons Philippa for stealing a classified experimental shuttle (that Jace helped her steal) maybe Amelia (and Philippa?) is/are offered a promotion? Amelia ends up declining and resigning from Starfleet, maybe Philippa gets promoted to Lieutenant? Starfleet presumes it was more of Amelia’s doing in getting her crew home. :( Amelia corrects the error :)

i fucking LOVE this graphic novel. i found it at a thrift shop, signed by the author, which probably means whoever this belonged to was a kickstarter backer for the project. it tells the story of a young artist and his wife being revisited by an old friend just released from prison. a story about drug use, lost friendships, and how your own memory can lie to you, and by extension, lie to your loved ones. maybe the very last line of the novel inspired the name of my comic?

seconds is an amazing graphic novel by bryan lee o'malley, who might be better known for creating scott pilgrim. this is a contemporary fairy tale of the disastrous consequences you might face if you could literally undo anything that might happen to you during the day, and how katie, a restaurant manager learns to abuse that power to send her own world crashing down around her. find it, i know its for free online somewhere but if you buy it thats even better!!

moon moth started as a short story by jack vance (who in his own right created rules for an internal magic system within his stories now called "vancian magic") about a sci fi murder mystery on a utopian planet called Sirene, a planet so accustomed to luxury that crafting and artistic expression are the sole pastime. everyone always wears a mask on sirene, and the social order is complex to learn and navigate...all communication is done through musical accompaniment as well. how will ambassador edward thissel know who is friend or foe??

i met jeremy at an expo a few years ago and regularly visit him every year now whenever hes at a showcase or expo. putting watercolor illustrations to music, writing little creepy poems, fan art of all kinds of franchises, i just really vibe with his artwork.

on the me side: things have been good! everything has picked up and got better since the whole diary fiasco, despite what i thought! i even made up with the girl who i said some awful thngs about. she's a swiftie, so it's easy XD (also she is machete's gf's bestie). she told me she got eras tour tickets, im so happy for her! her lit exam was literally on speak now tv. legend. i'm glad we're not fighting anymore. i made new friends, kept some of the old ones. if i could go back... i dont think i would change a single thing :") our finals are over, we're officially out for the summer (prom was amazing) ive been really really happy, and i hope you are, too ❤

on the sad beautiful tragic love life of sythe side: well, maybe not so sad or tragic, because... *drum roll* i have a boyfriend now! he is neither machete boy, or cranberry hehe. he's perfect and i adore him :D let's call him eli, but he sends me good morning messages, and has adorable nicknames for me, and makes me feel amazing ✨

it seems like machete and i have just magically cleared stuff up between us? he certainly doesnt seem to harbour any resentment towards me, or anything. we talk rarely when cranberry's with us, sort of like a mediator ? (cranberry is the unfortunate and accidental middleman lol, literally) although we do most of the talking without cranberry, sort of ignoring cranberry being there. we even have a snapstreak going. i've made peace with [the idea of] his girlfriend (she turns up in his snaps but it doesnt bother me anymore!) ; i found her tiktok and spotify a while back (not that i was looking for it). she has a playlist for machete with a bunch of swiftie songs too haha. it's different from mine. i think mine got really crazy because its sort of a mix between him and some other people, too, plus some songs are just there because i like them lmao

cranberry also has a girlfriend too now, i'm friends with her, but we're not close. it was sort of rocky between us for a while, and some weird stuff and some not cool stuff happened, but we stayed friends :) if i'm being honest, she's not the first person i would ship with him, but if he's happy, i'm happy!

another friend i might have dated is still around haha. let's call him han solo, because thats who he reminds me of. he's also cranberry's best friend! (he and cranberry insisted i write a fanfic for them hehe it was hilarious and caused chaos but everything's good!) he probably knows about eli by now. my friend, let's call her luna, is the captain of the sythe x han ship, but eli exists, and she knows it. but, she'll always ship me and han, i guess. he's nice, too. we only became friends in the period after everything with mchete and cranberry, so i don't think you've ever heard of him? but we had a blast towards the end of the year. we might even go to school together next year? i don't particularly want to make major life decisions over a guy who isn't even my boyfriend, but if we do, i would be really happy :)

all in all, i suppose it is a lovely end to a chaotic but perfect year ❤ i hope everyone gets all the love they deserve and live up to their full potential! it's made me realize that life is full of ups and downs, highs and lows, heartbreaks and falling in love, but in the end, everything always works out! i don't believe in luck, just hard work 💪

This is. This is awful. Someone needs to fix this. What’s wrong with you people? You could have filled this website with one hundred Kazuma Asougi Gets Forcibly Absorbed Into The Greatest Family fics and you’re still asobaroing away? Unbelievable. Unbelievable.

🎢 Which of your fics would you call your wildest ride?

this is a cheap answer i know but ALL OF THEM??? or like. 70% of them, considering i had a short "writing challenges phase"

I havent written that much in general. With my first fic "Sam and Ponk flirt their way through self imposed exile " i was just trying to understand ponk's character more, really exploring his voice while imagining what recovery could look like. I wrote it in the summer between my BA and my MA, so i was kinda lost for what to do with my time, since i didnt really have time to get a job. I experienced people actually enjoying my writing and ??? a tiktoker i followed even recommended it to people? that was super wild

with "Local Las Nevada Slime Feels Greener than Usual Today, Will He Survive the Day? " i just... it was me finally going "okay, i know this ship is super small, maybe a little unporpular and hated, but goddamn it will i write something for them bc i LOVE THEM" and then being surprised that people actually liked it, again. i was really surprised and that set me up for my big quackcicle fic Long Night  was written after i saw this beautiful little art of sam and ponk. i wrote something that i hoped captured all the little lonely feelings the art summoned in me, and then took a leap of faith and told pils that hey, i wrote a fic for your art, sorry if thats cringe. and pils... drew me art . it still makes me want to cry lmao. that was the first time i have ever gotten art for my fics A Square Peg in the Round Hole of their Heart was my biggest hit i think is safe to say. to receive so many comments per chapter really blew me away :D I hope its not weird or self aggrandizing, but i get a big ol grin when quackcicle fans recognize my username. This fic became a little difficult for me to write, i learned a bit about my style with it, and although i kinda disliked the ending a bit in retrospect, i love this fic overall :) (plus got to meet some cool peeps!)

skipping ahead, Grian's Involuntary Holiday at Skullcrusher Mountain is defintely my most impactful fic to me personally because i made a good group of friends from it (belle stitchthesewords and aci atherix, to name a few). this fic has been a challenge similar to Square Peg, but its a good challenge. Ive also been less scared to take breaks and really take a moment to figure out how i want to end it, something i learned from my previous big fic. i completely didnt expect people to really like it (actually, if you look at the first few chapters, i got so few comments that i almost gave up lmao). Ive been exploring having an overarching plot, small little plot twists, and writing unreliable narrators. its been a fun and wild ride this got really long and a little off topic im so sorry. thank you for the ask though, friend!!!

My Experiment (Donnie x Reader chp5)

since im gonna disappear for a week im gonna write a mini chapter for advance the plot to where i want it and chp 6 is gonna be the finial i think. yippy !

As you and Donnie danced, you could feel the build up rising in you. You were so scared to kiss him. The dance was going well but lord, what if this kiss ruined y'all friend ship. You couldnt let happen. You didnt need to be his partner, being his friend was enough. When the kiss finally came, you tilted your head to the side, so he would kiss your cheek and not your lips. The was too much anyways. You turned red, but you couldnt tell if it was because of happiness or embarrassment. You left the room before anyone could say anything. Holding back tears, you didnt want to kiss Donnie because you had to, you wanted to do it because you wanted to.

Everyone just watched you leave. "Ok spill it, what was the point of this" Donnie said with a somewhat angry tone. April and Leo looked at eachother and looked away. He knew it, he knew they had planned something. "We didn't mean any harm, we just wanted to, speed the process along..??" Leo said with an anxious tone, trying not to piss his brother off more. What process? Just because he liked you doesnt mean you liked him. "Leo they dont like me like that, dont force it." Donnie said taking a deep breath and he left the room.

You were hiding from everyone. You were embarrassed, upset, confused, and just plain, stupid. God you shouldve just kissed him. Maybe you shouldve just said no to the kiss. Either way, you were filled with emotions. You didnt wanna talk, see, or just think about anything. You just wanted to be by yourself.

Its been a whole 3 days. And you havent left your corner. Execpt for a few times for the restroom, and food. And donnie has had enough. He missed you, your smile, your laugh, hell even dancing with you was the most fun thing ever to him. He was so worried about you that he hasnt even spent a second working on finding you a way home. He went to your entrance to your 'room' and called out your name. "what" you responded. "I need to talk to you, it's important." He said, it was so soft, yet strong. You poked your head out and came out. "What is it" you asked him. "Why?" He said "Why..? why what" "why did you turn your head, why did you run away, why havent you been out here with us, with me?" he said, he sounded so hurt. You had your reasons for locking and hiding yourself from the world, but the main reason, was him. "Because" you said quitely. "i couldn't have you kiss me infront of everyone, i wanted you too kiss me because thats what felt right to us, not because of some dumb dance! I wanted you to kiss me, because you liked me!" You poured your heart out to Donnie, while he just listened. You didnt know how he would react, or if your friendship would last this after this practical confession. All you knew was that you couldnt keep on rotting like this. "I dont know what going to happen after this but god damn it Donnie i really really like you!" You said semi-loudly and just like that, he kissed you. God, it was just, lovely. You slowly kissed him back. You didnt know how long the kiss lasted but you didnt care. once y'all finished your half makeout session, you both turned bright red, it just clicked that you two kissed. You didnt know if you guys should talk about whats next or not, or if this was just a one time thing, until Donnie spoked up, "I really really like you too"
