Delay The Inevitable (TBB One-Shot)

Inspired by @nahoney22's and @moonstrider9904's comments (as well as my own) to this post from @sharazadee. A companion scene/ Crosshair POV of the last scene of episode 3x04.

The moment the Imperial freighter jumps out of Hyperspace, Crosshair feels anxiety creeping up on him, making his heart race. His gaze lands on the Marauder, settled on Ryloth's moon, and his throat goes dry. Despite his doubts, he must admit Omega was right about Hunter and Wrecker showing up.

Another point for the kid.

He underestimated her intelligence and resourcefulness, but she has proven him wrong. Crosshair now sees why Hunter and the others took up with her so fast. No matter how hard he tried to resist, she’s grown on him. During those five months they were imprisoned on Tantiss together, her relentless optimism became a constant annoyance. He didn’t want her to talk to him. He wanted her to leave him alone, but she never did. She kept coming back at every chance she got.

She refused to give up, mounting a relentless siege on his impregnable defenses until they eventually crumbled. He has reached a point where he is going against all his instincts and following her since they escaped. Protecting her. The sole impulse that kept him going during the last rotation. She’s proven that he’s not as heartless as he wants others to believe.

Omega leaves the pilot's seat as the ship lands, not waiting for the engines to fully stop. Crosshair’s cautionary words die on his lips as she darts out of the cockpit, disappearing into the lift before he can react. With a tired sigh, he looks out the viewport and watches as she stands still in the pool of light, her silhouette bathed in a warm glow. From the Marauder's open hatch on the opposite side, a hulking figure comes into view.

“Now, there’s a sight!”

The sound of Wrecker's booming voice reaches Crosshair's ears, filled with clear relief, while Omega's excited cries for him ring out with pure joy. A lump clenches his stomach, a sickening mix of envy and dread, as he watches them running towards each other. Wrecker embraces Omega, a gesture that Crosshair secretly yearns for, knowing it's something he'll never experience again.

Then Hunter emerges from the Marauder, and Omega runs to hug him. Crosshair turns his head away, his jaw clenched as he battles a whirlwind of conflicting emotions. Crosshair slumps against the seat and, with a furrowed brow, he rakes a hand across his bald head, deciding his next move.

Now that the kid is safe, he should make a swift getaway to evade the Empire. He should take the ship, but hesitates. He knows that his previous squad will not give him a warm reception. After everything he did, why would they? Is he considering returning to them when they turned their backs on him? How could they run away together when there’s no trust among them?

But he has nowhere safe to go. With the Empire hot on his heels, going alone is a dead sentence for him.

A sudden whine and a wet bump startles him out of his churning thoughts. Batcher, the hound, presses her cold nose against his hand.

"Go with Omega," he says, his voice dripping with disdain as he points towards the exit.

Like her owner, the animal cannot grasp his not-so-subtle cues that her presence is unwelcomed. With a pleading whimper, she nips at the sleeve of his shirt, tugging on it with careful determination.

“No, stop! What are you doing?”

As Batcher whined once more, she yanked on his sleeve, the fabric tearing and nearly causing him to fall off the chair, leaving no doubt about her intentions. With a sigh of resignation, Crosshair relents and gives in.

“Ugh, fine! I’m going, but you stay here.”

Crosshair narrows his eyes in irritation at her smug expression, cheerful bounce, and wide smile with her tongue sticking out. As he steps out of the lift, his irritation fades away and is replaced by a weighty sense of dread.

This won’t end well, but he’s not a coward. He can’t delay the inevitable. With each step down the ship's stairs, Crosshair felt the heaviness on his shoulders of uncertainty, fear, and regret. He braces himself for the reactions of Hunter and Wrecker when they lay eyes on him. The intense heat of their anger and distrust travels like a scorching wave between the two islands of light, striking him with deadly precision.

Crosshair inhales deeply, preparing himself for the impending judgement. There’s nothing else he can do.

My Bad Batch Season 3 Predictions

Ok listen. I am NOT a critical thinker or predictor when it comes to my comfort media, and this show falls into that category, BUT in honor of Bad Batch Eve I thought it'd be fun to try my hand at making some theories anyway just so that if any of them happen I can brag that I predicted it. So let's try this out.

Thing I think will happen by the end of the series:

Phee dies

Cody shows up + Cody dies

Pabu is destroyed(I saw someone say they thought the Zillo Beast would be the one to destroy it and tbh I agree)

Wolffe comes back. He sighs dramatically about something. Perhaps even incorporating an eye roll. And if we're REALLY lucky, he'll even cross his arms.

CX-2 is Tech

DARTH VADER APPEARANCE

Things I WANT to happen by the end of the series:

Quinlan shows up(I will accept a name drop but NOTHING LESS. Give me his FACE or give me his NAME. No vague references)

Things I think will happen in the finale specifically:

Crosshair, Echo, Wrecker, Hunter all die

Omega lives

Those three itty bitty clones(Mox, etc.) go with Rex

Cid pulls a Lando and tries to make up for her betrayal

Howzer dies and i die too

Crosshair momentarily overcomes his hand trembling to make a heroic and epic shot that saves someone's life(Rex/Wolffe/Gregor?). The music swells dramatically. The sun comes out. Omega wipes a tear from her eye. He will immediately die after this.

CX-2(Tech?) kills one of the bad batch

Then Omega/someone will be in danger and CX-2(Tech??) will overcome his reprogramming or whatever to save her life. He will also immediately die after this.

I haven't decided if I think Batcher will live and stay with Omega(symbolic of the rest of TBB still being with Omega metaphorically despite their deaths) or will die before the rest of them in a sooner episode(foreshadowing that they're all going to fkcing die)

I unfortunately don't think Hemlock will die. I have never hoped to be wrong about something as much as I hope to be wrong about this.

Tech + Crosshair - Exile

I'm going the extra mile to color code the lyrics to showcase their different thoughts and mindsets

Crosshair Tech Both

Okay so obviously we're going to ignore the fact that this song is about a breakup so take several of these lyrics with a grain of salt.

(And a lot of these might not nessesarily be Crosshair and tech but are more relevent to the batch as a whole, I hope you don't mind.)

I can see you standing, honey With his arms around your body Laughin', but the joke's not funny at all

I can see you starin', honey Like he's just your understudy Like you'd get your knuckles bloody for me

I see this as how in Aftermath the entire batch has an immediate click with Omega, except for Crosshair, and it almost adds this feel that Omega is replacing Crosshair in the batch. The symbolism of Omega sleeping in the gunners mount really showcases this, although Crosshair doesn't even know about that.

That last line in orange also stands out because in Aftermath theres a very stark difference in Crosshair in that he's no longer defending his brothers from the regs. He doesn't fight in the cafeteria until theres a direct offense against him(the loss of his lunch), whereas in TCW S7 we see he'll instantly defend his brothers when they're picked on. He's no longer that person and I bet it's noticable to his brothers, especially Tech, who we know from "He's always been severe and unyielding" is very attentive to Crosshair's personality.

And when the Batch escape Kamino, leaving Crosshair behind, he's angry, and feels betrayed. I want to bring up that Crosshair rationalized his allegiance to the empire by planning to get his brothers back where they would all join the Empire together. He never stopped caring for them, even if it was in a twisted way, but he thinks that they stopped caring for him, as they left him behind, but came back for Crosshair. He feels like he's the only one carrying the love they once shared. He's standing alone with that love in the hall. He can't go back into the room of the past relationship they had, but he's been locked out of the room his brothers have now gone into.

Second, third, and hundredth chances Balancin' on breaking branches Those eyes add insult to injury

Tech, as well as the rest of the Batch, continuously give Crosshair chances to come back to them, and even when Crosshair refuses, Tech doesn't give up on him. When Tech finds out that Crosshair was imprisoned he's the first to declare Crosshair is still their brother. Offering Crosshair another chance, even if Crosshair himself doesn't actually know about it. Then Tech states that they don't leave their own behind, which, isn't exactly true because they did leave Crosshair behind. Tech is trying to hold on to the promises their entire squad has made, to balance on that branch, but the fact that they've already broken that promise twice is breaking those branches, and Tech is determined not to break that promise a third time now.

I think I've seen this film before And I didn't like the ending You're not my homeland anymore So what am I defending now?

Each time they meet again in S1, it never ends well. Crosshair and The Batch both try to reach out to each other but to no avail, and it never ends well.

Their family used to be each other, but they don't even have that now. And yet they continue to defend each other. Crosshair is ready to have the four of his brothers join him in the Empire, to defend them to Rampart and convince him to let them stay. And when all of his brothers are mad at Crosshair, Tech is the one who explains his actions.

And to that you might say "But wait, Tech wasn't defending Crosshair in that moment?"

No. He wasn't. But Crosshair thought he was.

Crosshair thought Tech was defending him, but Tech shoots him down. Tech wasn't defending him because they no longer have the relationship we saw in TCW where they defend each other no matter what. That bond between them has now been broken.

You were my town Now I'm in exile, seein' you out I think I've seen this film before So I'm leavin' out the side door

The lyrics repeat "Now I'm in exile, seein you out" implying that it's not one of them exiling the other, they're both exiling the other. They're in exile, but they're also sending the other into their own exile. Crosshair might have turned on them, but they abandoned him. They're equally to blame here.

Okay so, I'm gonna be honest I'm really proud of this part, I think this might be my best analysis, if not the one I did for Hunter. Hi! so i um read your “happily ever after” for the delta squad and i was wondering if you could do that for tbb and the bois? you’re such a good writer <3333

I haven't challenged myself to write individual headcanons in a while, and this sounded like the perfect prompt to do it with! Who doesn't want these precious boys to live happily ever after in their own special ways? 🥰 psst, I also threw in Gregor and Howzer as a little treat 🤭

Cody would actually fancy himself as some sort of a political advisor or ambassador. He imagines the clones will need some representation after the war, a place in the galaxy, and to have their voices heard. He could picture himself stepping up to that challenge and being happy with it. It would sure beat having to sit around with nothing to do...

Rex also wants to be involved with supporting his clone brothers, but he has a much more domestic picture in mind. A partner, for starters. Someone to share life with who can be his best friend. And a house, any size, any location, with a door that's constantly opening for any weary or lost brother who needs a place to crash.

Wolffe has a very specific image in his mind. It may sound silly, but he wants to find a settlement somewhere for all of his brothers to live in. Like a little clone village, where they each play a part in keeping things humming. They can bring in partners if they'd like, procreate, that sort of thing... but for the most part it'd just be them, all living together until the end of their days.

Fox just wants a nap. A true, honest to goodness nap. Uninterrupted, no guilt or piling to-dos in the meantime. Free to fall asleep at his own pace and wake up naturally. Cushy pillows and all. If he got just one good sleep in, he'd be content with literally anything in his life. Heck, he'll dig holes in Tattooine forever. Just please give him this one little thing.

Fives absolutely wants kids. A whole brood of them. He can hold any kind of job, live anywhere in the galaxy, so long as he gets to be called dad. He'll embrace the dad jokes, read all the parenting books, tear up at every milestone. And if the fates allow, perhaps he'll live long enough to even be called a grandad, too.

Jesse would want to stay in the army as long as he can. He can't imagine what else he could do with his life outside of it. He'd be one of those clones crashing on Rex's sofa, needing his brother's help to get back on his feet and find meaning in his life. Eventually it would come as a handyman, keeping his hands busy with repairs in homes or ships, and of course flirting with the owners.

Kix would say he never wants to see another cut or broken bone again, but realistically, he would go out of his mind if he wasn't needed in that way. He wouldn't be able to help himself from volunteering at a hospital, or just starting his own medical practice in order to do things right. He'd especially love teaching his medical knowledge to an apprentice.

Tup wants a farm full of animals and crops. He currently knows little to nothing about how to run a farm, or how to keep things alive, but for him, happiness will be in the discovery. He'll start small, with a window ledge garden and a tooka in Coruscant. Over time, as he saves up enough money for some real land, he'll learn all the ins and outs of irrigation, breeding, and then like.

Hardcase wants to travel and experience all he can. Skydiving, snorkeling, white water rafting, pottery... you name it. His bucket list will grow as he goes; he'll cross one item off only to add two more ideas on. The galaxy is just so vast and full of so much. He knows he has a short life to live, so he intends to utilize every second of it doing something outrageously fun.

Dogma wants to remain a soldier, but not during an active war. He'd rather use his knowledge and skills to help keep the peace. He likes the feeling of being needed, of providing protection to others, but he knows wartime takes its tolls, so being a peacekeeper is a good compromise in his mind.

Echo would want to help his brothers, from a therapy standpoint. He believes there can be purpose for the clones outside of war, but that it will take a lifetime of support, encouragement, and restructuring to get them there. Whatever ear he can lend or advice he can impart to help as many clones find their happy ending, you can bet he'll do it.

Hunter pictures himself in a peaceful cabin in the woods. Living off the grid, hunting for his own food, building his own furniture, just really embracing that holistic, hippy lifestyle. He'd also prefer if the rest of the Batch was around, too. He really can't stand the thought of being alone, and while he does want a partner and kids, he'd be lying if he said his brothers weren't part of the picture also.

Wrecker wants to travel, specifically to discover and try as much food as possible. How is he affording this fantasy? Who cares. It's his dream, leave him alone. Yes, he wants the feeling of a full belly every day, but exploring different flavors and cuisines and how to prepare food is genuinely exciting to him. Maybe he'll even get a food vlog going along the way.

Crosshair isn't really concerned with whatever "happily ever after" means. So long as he can be useful, do the things he was created to do. If the war ended and he couldn't be a soldier, he'd become some kind of bounty hunter or gun for hire. True happiness would only come if he also had a partner by his side. He won't know that, though, until it happens.

Tech doesn't think about the future. Or happiness. He will go along with whatever options are available to him, so long as he gets to be himself. The easiest, and most logical in his opinion, choice is to keep the Batch together, utilizing their talents for the betterment of the galaxy. But perhaps pod racing wouldn't be such a bad gig, either.

Gregor would be happy as a teacher or coach. Anything where he could mentor the youth of whatever community he finds himself in. It wouldn't even matter much to him what he was teaching; he'd find a way to become an expert in it just to uphold his duty of education. Though physical activity, of course, ends up being his forte.

Howzer truly wants to fall in love and be married. "Happily ever after" for him looks like two old souls, holding hands as they rock on a porch swing and gaze off into the sunset. He knows relationships are work, but he's had some good examples to look up to so far in his life, so he's determined to put in the effort with the right person.

The Bad Batch x Reader - Mourn You

In battle you were mortally wounded and drew your last breath...

Warnings should be obvious: Death (a lot) / Sorrow / Hurt / Angst /Depression / Mental Breakdown Nothing sweet and fluffy here. If you want your heart to break, keep reading.

Hunter

He saw the fatal shot hit you, right in the chest, as you went down. His heart beats incredibly fast and hard. The last opponent is finally on the ground and Hunter can rush to your side. The closer he gets, the clearer it becomes to him that you are not moving. He knows even before he feels for your pulse that he won't find one.

His heart clenches in his chest. He swollows hard, trying to not lose it right here and now. There are still enemies nearby somewhere. He calls for help. It hasn't really sunken in yet, he only knows he wont leave your body here, he can't. As soon as he is back with the others, when they come to get the two of you and he sees the looks on their faces, that's the moment he finally realizes, that's the moment when it sinks in and it feels like lead filling his bones, tearing him down. He can barely stand upright, but somehow he does. His thoughts go heywire, he wants revenge. Hunter will be bitter for a long time, hard to be around for anyone and more determined than ever before, to take down Separatists. The only reason he at least tries to stay sane and reasonable is Omega.

Echo

He's already lost so much in this war and as he sees you fall, his heart skips a beat, he feels like falling as he hurries to your side. Feeling your pulse and not finding it he starts to panic and hyperventilate. He can't lose you! Echo is shaking as he calls for help, shaking and crying, feeling disengaged with reality.

When the others arrive he is still holding you in his arms, crying over your dead body, cradles you like a baby. His brothers have a hard time taking you out of his arms, he curses, and screams at them, trying to fight them off. He is very emotional, losing you is the last drop, after all he's been through, this one more thing he can't take.

Echo starts to distant himself from everyone, most likely not to recover from this loss.

Wrecker

Wrecker has a hard time realizing you are gone. He brings back your lifeless body and the others are trying to comfort him, but he is no where near understanding that you really are gone. Denial is his companion for a long time. Waking up in the morning and expecting you to be next to him in bed is a regular thing, one that breaks his heart, again and again every morning. Some nights he doesn't sleep at all, afraid to wake up just to be heartbroken again.

It takes a long time for him to get better. But he tries to go on, because he thinks that's what you wanted for him. He is slowly coming back to who he was before, but he still never is the same happy giant anymore, but he tries, for you. He'll always hold you in loving memory.

Tech

Your tragic end seals his as well. The moment he sees you fall his brain goes into overdrive, thinking of everything he knows that could save your life. He thinks after all, what is his exeptional mind worth if he can't save you? He is willing to try everything.

Tech hurries to your side, he's trying every trick he knows about, cardiac massgae, mouth-to-mouth ventilation, adrenaline shots... he's desperate and fully focused on you, trying so hard to bring you back, slowly but surely losing hope, starting to panic. What else could he do?

He is not aware of a few left over enemies approaching him. When his brothers arrive, they sadly have to pick up two dead bodies, not just one.

Crosshair

He sees you fall, shoots down rows of enemies with his rifle, fast and precise as always. When he reaches you and realizes that he has lost you, he feels rage, he is incredibly angry. He refuses to be sad, anger is so much easier to deal with. He tries to suppress the feeling of loss, he can't allow it, he knows it will eat him up.

You were such an important part of his life, he can't stop thinking about you lying on the ground, lifeless. He clings to his anger like it's a lifeboat in a storm.

But anger also makes him headless. In one of the future missions, he will have gotten in over his head, will no longer be able to control his anger, will only want revenge and make mistakes that will ultimately cost him his life.

Episode 8 Thoughts on That Scene

Spoilers for TBB

I just wanna touch on something from this episode that touches on some things I've seen people say that I don't necessarily agree with.

(This is not me hating on their opinions btw, I just have different thoughts).

Up until this point, I've seen a few people saying that the only reason Echo stayed with the Batch this long was because of Omega. Now don't get me wrong, it's definitely a massive part of that decision, but I don't agree with the idea that it's the only reason.

I think something we all need to understand is that Echo's choice to join Rex isn't an easy one, just like the choice to join the Batch wasn't. Echo deeply cares about all of his brothers and it took a lot for him to make the choice to walk away from that. I think a good example of this is at the beginning of the episode when Echo says that without the Batch he would still be trapped on Skako Minor. He looks over at them at this point and I think part of it is him thinking about just how much he owes these people. They saved his life. He can't just leave them behind when they have helped him so much.

And I don't want to make it sound like Echo only stayed out of guilt. Like I said earlier, he still cares about his brothers. But it definitely played a hand in his decision. There's probably a part of him that feels bad about leaving, but ultimately he has to make the decision that is best for himself.

And I also think that that's an interesting thing for Echo. He has always been about helping other people, and yes, his decision to join Rex is heavily based on the fact that he wants to help others, but this decision is also for him. It's where he feels like he needs to be.

And clearly he's spoken to the Batch about this as well. He didn't just drop it on all of them last minute. At some point he told them he was going to stay with Rex and they were all supportive of that. They understand that this is what Echo needs in the same way they understood his need to leave the 501st. I think leaving becomes slightly easier for Echo when he knows that the guys don't resent him for it. He has their support and that makes it easier because they don't make it seem like he owes them for anything. I think it's also why Echo left the 501st in the first place. Because Rex let him know that he respected his decision. It's that support that takes out the guilt element. He knows that his brothers will respect his choice.

And back to the point that I touched on at the beginning, it isn't an easy decision. He doesn't want to leave his brothers behind but it's a case of doing what he believes is best. It's evident in his facial expressions that he's going to miss them. He will always be there for his brothers when he needs them and he will always love them.

Something that stood out to me was when he said "it was where I was needed" in response to Omega asking why he stayed with the Batch. Was. Past tense. Echo goes where he believes he needs to go. Does this mean he thinks he doesn't have a place with the squad anymore? No. He even tells Omega he'll be back. But there are other people who need him right now. That chapter of his life is closed but he will return. As much as it hurts, I totally respect Echo's decision to stay with Rex and so do the Batch. He loves his brother's deeply but right now their goals don't overlap. They'll meet again when the time is right.

I am slightly intrigued by what Hunter said though. "Remember what I said." At first I thought this might be something to do with a conversation that he had with Echo that we didn't see, and that may still be the case. But I saw someone on Twitter (I'm sorry, I don't remember who it was) comparing that scene to TCW season 7. "If you feel like you don't fit in with them, find us." I don't know if that's the line Hunter was referring to, but it's possible? Echo made the choice to stay with Rex because that feels like the place where he belongs right now. But Hunter's letting him know that if he gets to the point where he feels like that isn't the right place for him anymore, he can always come back to the squad.

Now I don't know if that is what he's talking about, or if he did say something else to Echo, but I think it's another thing that has made Echo feel more comfortable with that decision. He hasn't lost his connection to the Batch. They will always be willing to let him back. They won't hate him for the choice he made.

Echo is still their brother.

And ultimately that's the little push Echo needed. He stayed with them because he cares about Omega. He stayed with them because he cares about his brothers. He stayed with them because that was where his place was.

But as soon as that changed, he felt a level of guilt about considering leaving. He didn't want to just walk away when he owes them so much. But the moment they reassure him that they respect his choice, that's when he goes. Because they don't hate him. They never will. He's their brother and they want what's best for him in the same way he wants what's best for them. And when he feels the time is right to return, they'll welcome him back with open arms.

Ultimately, Echo's decision is a complex one. It was never just as simple as staying for Omega. He wanted to stay for all of them.

But right now, this is the right choice for Echo.

Howzer + Aurelia Ch. 12

Howzer stole our hearts when he appeared in TBB, and I wanted to write a bit of a backstory for him. It begins with his newbie days during TCW and stretches to where we last see him in TBB. Enjoy his character arc and some heartwarming romance, action, adventure, yearning, angst, and growth.

"That was a good run today, boys. Clean up and prepare for tomorrow; we're going to take their supply station. Dimissed," Sprint said with a loud, clear voice.

Howzer pulled his helmet off along with the rest of the troops around him, breaking formation and scattering to their individual plans. He fell into step next to Sprint as they walked toward the barracks. "Is it true that Syndulla and his team will be there tomorrow too?" he asked.

"Not sure," Sprint shrugged, "That's above my pay grade. But I'd guess he'll be with the Jedi and Captain Keeli's squad, so probably not." He looked stately with his new teal green pauldron which matched the paint he had decorated his armor with. Howzer had initially made fun of it but gave up once he realized he wasn't going to get a rise out of his friend.

"Hmm. I'd like to work for him," Howzer continued, "Now there's someone who gets stuff done."

"Yeah, there are mixed opinions of him," Sprint answered. "Some say he's too radical, others say he does what's needed. Who knows. Maybe we'll get to see for ourselves someday."

"Maybe," Howzer agreed. "You coming to the cantina tonight? These Twi'leks are spicy when it's a full moon..."

Sprint shook his head with a small smile, waiting for the day that Howzer wouldn't feel the need to always have something like that to say. With a nod, they parted ways for the evening.

"Left flank! Move in!" came the orders, and Howzer gripped his DC-17 tightly. They charged into the ravine, taking cover behind the rocks amid the chaos of flying laser bolts and taking turns shooting at the approaching droids.

"Aerial team, in position?"

"Yes sir!"

"Go."

Shots rained down on the Separatist army from all directions as a squad of troopers popped out of their hiding places along the ridges of the ravine. Fueled by the element of surprise and the resulting disorder, Howzer and his brothers ran in, mowing down the rows of metal with surprising ease. Almost... too easy.

"Droidekas!" Sprint announced, "Fall back!"

The troopers ran back to the cover of the rocks as the droids rolled into position, expanding their ray shields and beginning to fire.

"Grenades!"

A few blasts flashed on and around the droids, but they remained impervious to damage.

"You've got to roll them slowly!" Sprint yelled in the comm, "Second wave!"

But before they could toss the remaining grenades, a deafening roar was heard as a herd of large creatures descended from behind the droid army. A vicious array of Twi'lek warriors charged in on their blurrg mounts, wiping out droids left and right with spears and blasters.

"It's Syndulla!" exclaimed the clone next to Howzer, as they peeked over their rock. He marveled at the ferocity and efficiency of the team as they tore through the ranks.

"Let's finish them off!" Howzer cheered.

"Stay in formation," Sprint ordered.

But Howzer was filled with adrenaline. This was his chance to make an impression on Cham Syndulla, the legendary "Hammer of Ryloth". It was his chance to take one step closer to his aspirations. He broke free from his rock cover, charging in to face the remaining battle droids. He dropped two of them with two shots, yelling in victory, and ran across a clearing to finish off a few more. What he didn't see was the commando droid flipping over his head, landing behind him and targeting him with its blaster.

"Howzer!" Sprint yelled, watching the situation unfold, "Behind!" He raised his own blaster, running forward into the clearing and peppering the droid with a few shots. Yet somehow it still stood, pivoting in a complete 180 and firing toward Sprint. He dove sideways, narrowly missing a bolt to the chest, and flung an EMP toward the commando.

Then everything happened simultaneously: the commando droid sizzled in a bright flash of blue as Howzer charged at it, unaware of the Twi'lek mount leaping over the rock behind it toward the remaining droideka. The commando droid dropped, leaving Howzer facing the blurrg, and he dodged at the last minute. But he was not quite fast enough -- a swinging Twi'lek spear met the side of his face with a sickening sound, and his head snapped sideways, followed by his body. His fall was broken by a jagged rock, catching his chin on the way down, and he landed in a crumped heap as everything faded to black.

Howzer woke up in the medical wing, face wrapped almost entirely in white gauze. He heard the steady beep of machines and squinted, attempting to see clearly with one of his eyes partially covered. A medical droid hovered near a trooper in the next bed, and Howzer sat up more fully to look around, immediately regretting the movement as it caused a stabbing pain in his head.

"Hello CT-2420," said the medical droid, flying over to run a scan over his face. "You have sustained significant trauma to the parietal and temporal areas of your skull, as well as a series of lacerations to your cheek. It is uncertain whether or not your brain function has been impaired."

"It was impaired from the start," Sprint said suddenly, pulling back the curtain and coming to stand next to the bed. He smiled, placing a hand on Howzer's shoulder, who rolled more slowly this time to focus on him with his uncovered eye. The teal splashes on white armor were a welcome sight.

"Whh hmmfn?" the sound was as much of a surprise to Howzer as it was a comical sight to Sprint, who chuckled at the muffled attempts at speech through the immobilizing gauze wrapped around Howzer's cheeks, chin, and head.

"You disobeyed orders, that's what. Nearly got me shot and earned yourself a nice smack to the face. I'd put you on leave, but it seems you've received a consequence already."

"Mff" was the only reply, as Howzer lifted a hand to his head.

"You wanted to show off for Syndulla," Sprint accused, crossing his arms. "Howzer, I'm serious. I know you have big dreams, but you're never going to be a captain if you don't get a hold of yourself."

Howzer remained silent, eyes dropping to the foot of his bed. Sprint gave him one last pat on the shoulder, "You've got it in you, brother. Being a good leader isn't about bravado, it's about doing the right thing. Sometimes that includes heroic actions, like those of General Di and Captain Keeli... Maker rest their souls... But more often, it's about considering the whole picture and not just yourself. Now rest up."

"Hmmph."

Want to add to the Hunter discourse that I don't consider this bad writing. It’s fine to be frustrated by Hunter—that’s kind of part of the point of the arc. I love Hunter, he’s one of my favorite clones, and in my meta posts on TBB I’ve more than once commented on his micro focus on his familial circle only, while Echo represents caring for a bigger picture as well. And how Hunter seems very locked down emotionally.

Echo isn’t either/or about what he cares for. Echo cares a lot about his brothers too, it’s that Echo has embraced caring for a greater good along with that. Hunter is trying to stay locked down so hard, and if you watch him closely, this has been going on a while. He feels deeply, and consciously tries to keep his feelings in check, to think and act like a soldier, to keep it together to keep his family safe. And he does care about more than just that. (Which I'll get back to later in this post)

Quick review, first they lost Crosshair, and Hunter cared. He always cared. They got some hope of getting Crosshair back so they go to save Crosshair, and because of that mission, Tech dies. So now they’ve lost Tech, trying to save Crosshair, and suddenly Hunter is ready to give up and go live on Pabu. He wants to quit fighting. Because as far as they know Tech is dead*--from Hunter's pov Tech is dead, gone, not coming back. Then the empire captures Omega, and that galvanizes Hunter again, because she’s captured and alive.

*Tech Lives truther. Hemlock used Tech's goggles to taunt Hunter. We haven't seen the body. There are support towers for that tram system, Tech could have slowed his fall. That's my story I'm sticking with it.

It’s not that he no longer wants to save Crosshair. He does. But losing Tech yanked the ground out from under him, again, very hard. He needed yet another immediate, rescueable crisis in front of him to get him moving again--which is saving Omega. It's not that he cares about Omega and not Crosshair.

Hunter's been mourning Crosshair, and showed that if there is a chance to get him back, he'll take it. He took it, and it cost him another brother. Add it up.

Look at Wrecker and how openly expressive he is. Wrecker doesn’t self-regulate much. He feels and he shows how he feels, he groans and stomps and slumps his shoulders and if he's sad or happy you hear about it. Wrecker looked so defeated in the season finale, it was heartbreaking to see. Yet Wrecker, who isn’t hiding his feelings, doesn't seem nearly as defeated as Hunter, who tries to keep it all together at all times and regulates his emotionally expression carefully.

It’s a character arc. And TBB is slowly unpacking, and doing a character study, on Hunter.

Hunter needs to express the pain he’s in. He needs to let that out, but the current circumstances, with crisis piled on crisis and losing more of his family, doesn't seem like the time yet. The arc isn't finished.

His caring about his immediate family unit is admirable. It’s also a way to hide. Do the missions to make the money so that family unit can survive, period. Save family, don’t think about all the families in the galaxy who are in pain. If they incidentally harm the interests of the bad guys, fine. But Hunter doesn’t think outside his own bubble.

It’s because he cares. If he lets in how much it hurts losing loved ones, if he starts thinking too much about what the empire is doing to so many families, to so many people. It’ll be unbearable.

It's fine to be frustrated, but it’s not bad writing. It’s the character’s arc. It’s Hunter.

Okay this is the one that took me the longest to figure out so I want to get it done sooner rather than later before I lose the ideas in my brain. So, without further ado

Wrecker - New Years Day

Wrecker is maybe not the smartest of the batch, but he's the most emotionally intelligent of them.

But I stay when you're lost, and I'm scared, and you're turning away

Wrecker is always there to comfort Omega. After his chip activates he wastes no time before apologizing to her, as hard of a conversation as it is.

You squeeze my hand three times in the back of the taxi I can tell that it's gonna be a long road

Honestly idk why but this lyric reminds me of the scene where he sits next to omega screaming that they're going to die before switching to reasuring her that they're going to be fine. But it also makes me think of how hem sticks by Hunter in Season 3, that while Echo is still helping, he's gone while Wrecker chooses to stay with Hunter so he isn't alone.

Wreckers very loyal to his family, and he stands by them no matter what. Even when Crosshair betrays them, Wrecker is first to suggest that Crosshair could have turned on the empire. In Kamino Lost he tells Crosshair that they would have taken him back without hesitation. He'll be there for his family no matter what happens, no matter what they do.

Please don't ever become a stranger (hold on to the memories, they will hold on to you) Whose laugh I could recognize anywhere (hold on to the memories, they will hold on to you)

Wrecker is the only one of the Batch who outwardly expresses that he misses Crosshair. He holds on to the hope that Crosshair will return and he seems to be the most shaken by Tech's death, excluding Omega. After Eriadu we find him sitting at the bar, reminiscing with Cid on how much he loved Tech.

This one's a bit shorter because I felt like a lot of it was more straightforward in comparison to Hunter and Tech's. Anyways I hope you enjoy, and comment who you want me to do next. <3

The Bad Batch x Reader - At The Beach

Warning: Partly Suggestive

Hunter

Hunter is an outdoorsman, he loves the sea and the beach, the smell and the sound of the water, the sand under his bare feet.

He has taken precautions, when you go with him to the beach he has drinks and fruit with him, he himself is not really sensitive to the sun, but because of you he actually thought of a parasol just in case.

Most of the time though he is lying around relaxing, preferably with you snuggled up to him. He is used to pure stress, that here is an absolutely welcome time out, which he enjoys only too gladly with you. He feeds you fruits, smiles a lot, is generally very affectionate and much more relaxed than you usually know him, even if he always seems like a calm reasonable guy, this tension of the leader is nevertheless always there, just not here and today on this beach.

He is free of any tension, at least for now. You may have spent the beginning of the day with the others on the beach, but he'll be looking for a secluded corner of the beach with you after a few hours, maybe a lagoon where he'll be all alone with you. Hunter, by the way, is a darn good kisser and he loves to make out, so you might just miss the beautiful sunset.

Echo

Echo is quite withdrawn on the sunny beach. No wonder, since the Citadel he has incredibly pale and sensitive skin, he is always in the shade and thickly creamed, usually he still wears a shirt to be completely safe. Topless or maybe even completely naked like Hunter does sometimes, you won't see him on the beach.

But he likes to go there with you, it's time you both can spend carefree, cuddling, kissing, talking or just silently enjoying each other's presence. Echo likes the beach, it is lively and peaceful at the same time. He loves to admire the sunset with you and sometimes, if you have time and enough energy, the sunrise the next morning.

Wrecker

The boy is so full of energy, he will animate you to swim, play beach volleyball or water polo. He will play and cuddle with you in the water, playfully exchanging little caresses when you are both in the sea.

But he is also very attentive, he makes sure that you are not too long in the sun, he always has an eye on you when you are in the water, no matter how well you can swim. Basically he is attentive, lively and caring, on the beach too.

He also surprises you with a giant ice cream cone with all your favorite flavors and maybe a little over the top garnish.

The times you can spend on the beach are among the most beautiful for him, every memory is burned into his mind and when you see him smile enraptured sometimes, you can assume that he remembers you walking along the beach with a wide happy smile on your face that he loves so much.

Tech

Believe it or not, he is a fantastic swimmer and diver. Part of his workout is mainly related to his back, as he is very tall and slim and has his problems with it. Swimming has always been a very important part of his training, just because of that.

He swims fast, has incredible endurance, and can stay underwater for surprisingly long periods of time without any problems.

Tech loves to dive with you for pearls or generally go exploring underwater. Don't worry if you're unsure, Tech knows what he's doing, he looks out for you and takes your wishes and possible fears into consideration.

The sun does get to him though, unlike most of his brothers his skin is a bit lighter and more sensitive, but he also makes sure to stay in the shade and use sunscreen on the beach himself.

Tech likes to spend time with you on the beach, but not in silence, he loves to tell you about the sea and its inhabitants. You can lean against him and he will tell you all the things he knows while the sun is setting in the sea.

Crosshair

Well, you probably realized it before, but Crosshair won't miss the opportunity to seduce you on the beach. We are talking about our beloved grumpy sniper after all.

He's the type who likes to sit back in the shade with a drink in his hand and let his fingers dance over your bare skin while enjoying the peace and quiet and your closeness.

He's also a good swimmer, almost like Tech, but when he's with you on the beach, he's unlikely to go in the water unless you do. He loves to see you in beach and swimwear, he finds that absolutely gorgeous.

That smirk on his lips is unmistakable, he thinks you're great, thinks you're hot and that's no secret, he shows you that quite openly. Maybe it's the pina coladas or the sun, but on the beach he is somehow especially affectionate.

Be prepared that you will hardly get his hands as well as his lips from your body.

Amongst other things you wouldn't be working with the batch anymore, but aside from that, he heard sinister things about those who embraced the dark side.

Hunter is staring at you. He can't believe what you just said.

"You know I don't want to say goodbye", he says with a low voice "Don't do this"

He will be torn. Hunter doesn't want you to leave and become something dark, something sinister. He'll beg you to stay, even if it's really hard for him, he won't be tempted to come with you. If you walk down that road, you walk it alone. He's not deserting his brother and his duty for you, especially not like this.

It'll hurt like hell, he will take a lot of time to heal. Losing you is really hard for him, but no matter what you do or say, he will stand his ground.

Echo

Echo's heart sinks. He feels like you just pulled the ground from right under his feet and he starts to fall, with no end in sight.

"You don't mean that", he says meekly.

"Why would I not? If you're not with me, you're against me"

Echo's eyes widen.

"What are you talking about? It's me, Echo. I'm your friend, I love you"

"Then why would you stop following me?"

He's torn. He Loves you deeply, but he has duties, he has his brothers. And yet he can't let go of you.

"Where would we go?", he asks quietly.

"To a place where we are free of any boundaries. We could be together and make our own decisions"

Echo is tempted and to much into you to deny. He's coming with you, but he will always try and hope to get you back to the light side. He won't watch you do bad or wrong things without comment. But he stays with you. At least for a while. If you got to far though, he'll leave with a broken heart.

Wrecker

The sweet giant is heartbroken, but he knows the way you are going is one he can't and won't go.

"I've risen above such things. I won't let any of you hold me back, not even you"

He's hurt, very much so. Tech doesn't really know what to say or do.

Tech will be down for weeks. He'll be coiling up like a fetus in his bunk for a long time and talk to no one. He feels left and broken. You broke his heart and it's not healing any time soon.

Hi! After rereading Rough Awakening (which is amazing btw) I hope you'll have someday the time to continue it (no pressure!) Since you also are a SW Rebels fan I'm interested in your opinion with regards to the parallels between SW Rebels - The Honourable Ones and especially the last two episodes of TBB season 1. Do you think they could be used to predict Crosshair's journey because of the heavy analogy between the used tropes? Thank you and stay safe!

First, YES, I definitely will continue Rough Awakening! 100% certain. When? Um, that's what I'm not so sure about. I write like one (1) sentence when I open the document every so often, and other ideas on my head pester until I write them down and force me to push aside my old ones. You know, typical shining new idea syndrome. So it'll take a while 😅 Next chapter is halfway done. There's hope, tho! I'm hyped after watching the season 2 trailer so that should motivate me to continue 😆 And don't be shy to pressure me. Gently and kindly but hold me accountable. Please, I beg you. That's what I need.

Second, oh dear nonnie, you have no idea how much I love your question! I remember the first time I watched the TBB finale and how much I screamed in that scene. The Deja vu to The Honorable Ones (which is my fave ep from Rebels) and the parallels are too strong to ignore. I believe that yes, it's a possible sign that Crosshair will get his redemption eventually. Those parallels are what have me if not happy, at least not mad, at the writers for making Crosshair go back to the Empire. 

If I'm honest, I like the idea of him staying Imperial a bit longer more and more as time passes. Because despite the fandom's desire to have Cross back with his brothers, it makes sense story-wise that he's not. I know it sounds like a sacrilege, but hear me out! There's a difference between Kallus' and Crosshair's mental and emotional states at that point. Bahryn for Kallus, it was the moment he hit rock bottom; he had no other way to go but up after that. Kallus realized how insignificant he was to the Empire, it was the last straw, the last in a series of moments during all season 2 that led to that realization. If you rewatch Rebels' late season 1 and all season 2 you can notice those things (that at the moment seemed like nothing) that made a dent in Kallus' loyalty to the Empire. Had he not those previous moments, I think the story would've been very different. Zeb pushed Kallus over the edge but Kallus was already on the brink, even if he didn't admit it to himself. But Crosshair… 

Crosshair is not nearly there yet. He's (rightfully) hurt because his brothers never came for him (although I understand why they didn't). He feels betrayed by them, so he gives his loyalty to those who gave him the illusion of being loyal to him. He doesn't see that he's deep in a -pardon my French- shit pit. He's deep in it but not at the bottom yet. So he's in such a precarious situation right now. I'm so eager to see how his deteriorating relationship with Rampart is going to go, and how things will go with ES-02 because neither she nor Rampart trusts him anymore (I'm sure of this despite Rampart praising Cross in the season 2 trailer). Now, it's when he's going to see how true Hunter's words are, that he's nothing but a number to them. How long will Crosshair take to actually see, to admit that to himself? I don't know. Probably more than I'd like to and he'll do horrible things in the meantime, unfortunately.

Although after watching the trailers for season 2 I have my fingers crossed 🤞for some of Cody's doubts to rub on him next season. I mean, we could say that Cody is one of the few if not the only Reg clone Cross respects. There's a tiny possibility for Cross to see that even the freaking Marshall Commander of the army starts questioning the Empire's motivation and ultimate goals. Do I believe that it will change Crosshair's mind 180 degrees right on the spot? Nope. Not even close. But it might plant the seed for future consideration. It'll be another of those necessary moments in Crosshair's journey. I'm hoping that he eventually will see it and reach out to his brothers. 

I might add that Wrecker was right on calling Crosshair out for not contacting them after his "chip removal" (you know my position on the chip status since you've read my fic), as much as Crosshair was in roasting Hunter for abandoning him. I don't want to hear arguments about Crosshair couldn't do contact them because he'd been found out. I say that's BS. Because if it's true that the chip is gone and he was capable of coming up with all that scheme of bringing the rest of the batch to Kamino and into the training room on the pretenses of capturing them when he intended to bring them into the fold, to protect them, to save them (because it's in plain sight that he desperately wanted to be reunited with them), he very well could have sent a tiny little encrypted message to them instead of doing all that theatrics. Because regarding IQ, intelligence, cleverness, and all its synonymous, after Tech, Crosshair.  Nobody can convince me otherwise. This is probably a moot point since the chip is still in (watching the longer trailer at the SW celebration confirmed it for me) but I digress.

What I'm trying to say is that, beyond his rightful emotional pain for being abandoned, Crosshair is a very intelligent person with the capacity to see the truth of things, and it's my sincere hope he's on a rocky road to redemption (my only caveat is that it does not end with his death. I hate that trope. Especially when we have Kallus' example. It's possible and 100% satisfactory to have a redemption arc that ends in a happily ever after). Of course, that hope is a cautious one at best because, despite his intelligence, Crosshair's very stubborn, and also we're talking about clones and Star Wars here, so I know how it is. 

TL; DR. Yes, I think the parallel to The Honorable Ones is a strong sign of Crosshair's redemption arc. I can't wait to see it. It's going to be so angsty and heartbreaking but so good.
