Bro from the start they are LITERALLY glued to each other as if beeing separated is not an option. You don’t understand, they have been holding each other for the last three or more chapters. Yeah I know they are covering one another BUT Rin never touches anyone this much in a game and Isagi, my boy Isagi, you are no better than him.

I threw the bllk characters into the Hunger Games simulator for a bit of fun and the simulator accidentally created the most random rarepair I’ve ever seen: Hiori x Kaiser.

These two started their tragic love tale on the first night. Kaiser convinced Hiori to snuggle with him… the next day though, something must’ve happened. That treacherous Kaiser must’ve been tricking Hiori because Kunigami was tending to Hiori’s wounds and Kaiser was having his shit stolen by Isagi (good for Isagi). Nothing happened for a little while — Hiori killed Anri, Kaiser did whatever Kaiser does — BUT THEN on night 3… Kaiser invited Hiori into his shelter! Was it another trick? Was Hiori naive for trusting the man who’d stabbed him in the back once before? Whatever it was though, it wasn’t malicious this time. Perhaps Kaiser was longing for the presence of another after Ness had died on day 2?

The two must’ve ended up staying together after this. Hiori practiced some archery and the two of them survived a pack of wolf mutts together. But, this was still the Hunger Games. Only one of them would survive in the end. Hiori cried himself to sleep while Kaiser looked at the night sky. What could possibly have been on Hiori’s mind? I’ll tell you what: TRAGEDY! He knew he couldn’t stay with Kaiser and was thinking forwards to the day when he might have to kill him.

The cornucopia was replenished with food and supplies. Kaiser and Hiori went together but were confronted by Kira. They fought. Hiori remembered his dilemma from the previous night. He thought back to that time when Kaiser betrayed him on night 1. This was the Hunger Games. Only one would survive. And so, he ran. He fled the scene, taking everything he needed while Kira mercilessly slaughtered Kaiser once and for all. The tragic love between Kaiser and Hiori died with him. Did Hiori ever truly love Kaiser? Or was this all payback for that initial betrayal?

Hiori went on to win the game! The simulator might be random but this is the funniest shit it’s spat out at me in a while.

What is said above is exactly what happened if we take in the case of Hiori—he suddenly feels so changed you know. He was always shown as like a soft boy, but if we take a look at him after Ubers match, then we can clearly see how much free he seems.

So, it makes perfect sense to say that those chains and cuffs represent a thing which is holding back a player from achieving his true state—the concept of 'originality'.

And I want to add him again too:

One thing that even I overlooked was how Anri even got a hold of Ego in the first place.

If we were to glance at the very first chapter of the Manga, then we have this panel:

Sometimes, during translation, meanings/words might change and I can't read Japanese, but if we were to accept that she did say coach, then the question still remains: How she got a hold of him?

Okay, suppose she used to be his fan or she randomly bumped into him or a series of event just made her meet him, but then another question arises: Why she wants Japan to win the World Cup so badly?

You know, we don't give her the credit, but she is the most mysterious character to be honest—we literally know nothing about her. I understand that there is nothing wrong in wanting your country to win in something, but the amount of efforts she is putting into achieving the dream of hers is commendable.

I just adore that Goddess. She is the backbone of Blue Lock. I love her so much.

Hey!! I loved your Rinsagi metas and posts. FINALLY someone in the fandom who doesn't infantilize Isagi and sees canon him. Yes Isagi is nice but not like.. nanase level friendly and nice. And Rin, so many people reduce him to this one-dimensional character who's issues people treat like a joke. When that's not the case? Bachira at least knows his prblms, Rin has no idea at all. It's a lot like Post WC kunigami which draws...interesting parallels esp when you look at pre WC kunigami and at how Rin seems a lot happier before the fight. I saw someone make that comparison.

Also, any opinions on the Itoshi parents? We've only seen half their faces and nothing from them abt their kids's relationship. I mean, it kinda bothers me how we've seen the views of Isagi, Bachira, Chigiri, even Hiori's parents when he's not a main character, Yet we got no input from the Itoshis. Do they just not notice? Are they a bit neglectful esp since they let a 13 yr old Sae go to another country alone? Do they let their kids do whatever they want including fighting for a year? Who knows? I'll love to know your thoughts tho.

Isagi stans, please rise up and help characterise him properly lmao

Rant about my issues with the general fandom characterisation about Isagi. Sorry anon if this isn't what you wanted, I have a lot of Thoughts and Salt where Isagi is concerned, and I am Fandom Old who is growing incredibly sad with how divisive current fandom is over a whole host of things. Skip to Itoshi if you don't wanna read about Isagi + fandom musings. Skip to parents if you wanna read about my thoughts on the family dynamics.

Isagi is, for better or worse, the stock shonen MC. He's enough of a regular guy for the target readers, which are teenage boys, to identify with. As he's the MC, the story overall serves to validate and support him, so long as he fits the themes the author is working on, which for Blue Lock, is the concept of being the best at what you're doing, while also bringing out the best in others, and then working together successfully to achieve goals (i.e. the World Cup).

But, Kaneshiro-sensei's also a strategic writer. Isagi, because he's such a bland self-insert for the most part, combined with how he has a very weird form of Power of Heart, has wound up being an especially attractive character for those who like harem, or reverse-harem series. Which then, for better or worse, brings all the fujoshi fangirls around (the curse of so many attractive characters). But most especially the fujoshi fangirls who are a fan of all x MC ships. I am emphasizing all x MC here, because east Asian/gen Asian fandom, have grown incredibly restrictive and rigid about top x bottom dynamics, which is a whole host of other things and issues to talk about.

Look up any popular shonen jump title, you'll find that these shippers generally have the same tastes, and move around the same fandom circles. You'll usually find them shipping all x MC ships, from Izuku to Tanjirou to Yuuji to Naruto etc. Overall, how they characterise them never deviates all that much. It's the nice, 'innocent', naive, guy who is a bit of a pushover, and who has all the other hot characters wanting to get in their pants. That's where Isagi falls into as well, for these shippers. The more thorny and less 'nice guy' parts of his characterisation gets sanded down, though YMMV whether this is a skill issue by fandom or simply a cultural readership interpretation difference altogether.

On the Itoshi bros:

Yep, Rin has a lot of repression issues. I wouldn't go so far as to say that Rin has no idea at all about his issues (how else would he pick out Bachira's loneliness so quickly lol, also there's some hints from official guidebook), but he definitely lacks self-awareness. I also agree that he and Nagi seem to be on different areas at the spectrum of depression (Nagi being apathetic, Rin being hostile).

If there's anything to parallel Rin and Kunigami, I'd say that it's the 'loss of a dream' and 'loss of companions'. In the manga proper, Rin does seem happier before the fight with Sae, like how Kunigami looked happier pre-WC. However, the light novel shows that Rin was already repressing both himself and his style of football to imitate Sae long before then due to external pressures by his teammates and coach, and even more severely than Isagi, who also didn't have much of a relationship with his own teammates from Ichinan.

If Sae had tried to explain more than that one line about 'the world being vast', they wouldn't have such a strained relationship right now, honestly. While I don't think that Rin would have fully understood what Sae was trying to say because he lacked the experience and perspective, I do think he would have been more supportive, which would have been better overall, for the both of them. They were both idiots that night, lmao, though I do view Sae as having been punished by the narrative when he pushed his dream onto Rin.

About the Itoshi parents:

We know that Rin and Sae presumably used to share a room and a double bed as kids (albeit a fairly spacious one, from the looks of it), which makes me think that they're more likely to be middle class than upper class. Young Rin also accompanied Sae to his soccer practice games, rather than going off for other classes like say, art, which implies that his parents might not have been able to afford it. Sae also walked home with Rin, which further implies that they're parents are busy, though its more of a norm in JP. Possibly a double income household, to fund Sae, and later, Rin's coaching fees and time with the youth football squad. Also a household that seems to have no qualms about Sae, and later, Rin's rudeness and hostility, although they may tone it down around their parents. Sae must have picked his attitude up from somewhere.

I'm reluctant to call the Itoshi parents sending Sae to Madrid at 13 as intentionally neglectful, because there are cultural nuances there. I think the best parallel I can draw is parents from less-developed nations sending their children overseas from an early age to secure eventual permanent residency and establish a life in a more developed nation. Sometimes, home just isn’t good enough. And this is one of Blue Lock’s main story themes: that Japan’s football, as it is, isn’t good enough. They have neither the organizational structure, infrastructure, nor support to get the World Cup that Sae, Anri and possibly Ego, covets.

Sae's dream, and talent, is in football. He's been scouted by perhaps the most successful team in the Blue Lock world, with a world-class program for youths, and has been given the best chance possible, for any kid in his shoes, to fulfill his dream to be the best striker in the world. He's being sponsored, and he also left with a manager who would presumably, help take care of him whilst he was there. Sae isn't going there like say, Ashito from Aoi Ashi, who needed to go through a trial to even be considered for acceptance into the youth squad. He's going there as the equivalent of a golden scholarship student scouted for a potential future work placement, with the likely backing of the JFA.

What alternatives could his parents offer him if he stayed in Japan? His own speech to Sendou pre-blue lock vs U20 match encapsulates what could have been for him (Sendou is very much a foil to Sae, especially now that we know they're both redheads lmao). Being the best in Japan, a middle-of-the-road striker in the world, retiring with an average, albeit decent life. Sae's too egoistic, too talented, too greedy to be content with a life like that. I wouldn't be surprised if Sae had also begged his parents hard to let him go, since it's pretty much all he wanted as a kid.

That's without even taking into account the other problems his parents would face if they immigrated with Sae. How to take care of Rin and his education there, for starters. Rent and housing, finding jobs in Madrid where they likely can't speak the language, and face discrimination.

I think we don't get their parents faces because Rin and Sae's story, and their relationship with their parents, are simply emotionally distant. I don't think they have much parental control over Rin or Sae either.  Sae's been more or less looking after himself/being taken care of by Real Madrid + his manager in Spain since 13, and Rin has been strongly implied to be in much the same shoes since Sae left, to a lesser extent. I doubt they know the more minute details about Rin and Sae’s school life and team experience, both within and out of Japan. I even doubt that they know that Rin and Sae had a fight, honestly, though I can also see them being the kind of parents who will let their kids sort things out between themselves.

Overall: Itoshi parents takes care of them physically (buys them material things, makes sure they have a home to stay in, have a physical caretaker in their place), but emotionally? Rin and Sae seem to be pretty much left on their own. No wonder their relationship with each other broke down, and what little relationships they have with others seem like such a convoluted mess.

Bachisagi:

They are SO married it's literally unreal. They're even more obvious than nagireo and nagireo have a whole spinoff manga to be unapologetically gay and in love in. I'm so amused at how the author keeps waxing poetics about how they are made to be each other's perfect "partner" with increasingly not platonic framing. It's great. Bachisagi shippers are the only ones who keep eating here and I love that for us.

On a more serious note, I am really fond of this ship! I've mentioned before that I see parallels between them and the rin&sae and nagireo dynamics, and at some point I will get off my ass and compile a post on it because there is really so much to say. But even beyond meta, I like them as a ship because there's so much good old tension between them. At the very beginning I wanted to ship it but it bothered me how Bachira was constantly checking for Isagi's approval before doing anything, and then the author came in a clutch with that backstory and was like "did you know bachira has been soul-crushingly lonely all his life until Isagi came around and was put on a bit of a pedestal as a result?" and then BAM they get split up and it's angsty and horrible and it makes them confront their codependency but, wait for it !! they grow from it!! We love to see that. Look, I love good ol' pining and even codependency when done in a certain way, but I can't deny that bachisagi using their time apart to better themselves and be stronger for when they'll compete with / fight alongside each other is a great narrative choice. If you allow me to draw a parallel with nagireo, it's what Nagi thought he was doing when he joined Isagi in the 3v3, except Nagi's communication skills are godawful and his intentions backfired. But Bachira and Isagi get it right, and are so much stronger for it. We love to see that. I love pairings that draw strength from each other while still remaining self-sufficient individuals so it's no surprise I ship this. It's not super high on my ship list because at times it's too healthy and pink confetti and fluff for my personal taste, but I love them a lot anyway. It's crazy to me that they just met a few months ago and still clicked this hard (another parallel to ngreo lmao), but that's just more fodder for the "soulmates" angle.

Ryusae:

I say this ship is the worst in the most affectionate way possible :'D I still can't believe some of their lines are canon dhshjsjsjd I'll be real, I can't take these two seriously at all, but that's mostly my reaction to Shidou in general. They're both deranged in very similar ways, so it's no wonder they clicked. Shidou is one of those characters I would love to read about, but I'm terrified of touching fanon and possibly see what I consider his most interesting faucets of characterization sandpapered away for the sake of making romance plots work. He... Is not a fave of mine but he's interesting to be sure, and so is Sae. They're both extremely bad at expressing their emotions in a way that doesn't put others off and come across as selfish, and I think developing their bond romantically could be an interesting challenge. But since Shidou is... Well, Shidou, I think a lot of their ff will be full of nsfw and dirty flirting, which is not my thing. So that too has put me off from really getting into the ship.

That said, one of my favourite authors has written for them, so I can see myself being converted to this pairing in the future. They managed to make me a Rin enjoyer when Rin just made me roll my eyes so I absolutely trust their magic skills lmao

Hiorin:

I didn't know this ship was a thing until literally yesterday, when I found this post about them. I don't ship them quite yet, but this is another case where I can see myself caving in if the right author sells it well to me.

I too noticed the scene the post mentions, where Rin accepts Hiori's help and doesn't lash out at his concern like usual, and I found it cute. Rin's walls are sky high so it surprised me too. Plus Hiori could definitely use a friend to vent to who wouldn't judge, and I don't think any of the other boys would quite get his family situation, not how Rin might. So basically the premises for a cool dynamic are already there, and I've shipped characters who never met before based on my guess of their potential chemistry before, so. I can totally get behind this. Rn I see them as friends, but I haven't gone out to hunt for fics about them yet

Little spoilers to blue lock chapter 251

Do this guys forget that they are broadcasted to tha whole freaking world, because the things they are saying are questionable. Like bro, Hiori LITERALLY calls Rin and Isagi „lovebirds”??? We all know that, but boy you didn’t have to say it like that…(also the „prima donnas” omg)

A comprehensive not-PowerPoint presentation on why I ship hiorin even though they’ve only interacted twice… and that’s being liberal with the word “interact”

Do bear in mind that Hiorin as a ship is quite largely based in headcanon. While shippers like myself use canon as a basis to scrape whatever details we can about Hiori and Rin, their (brief) interactions and their personalities, canon material is more of an anchor from which several generally accepted headcanons have sprouted which we all kinda sorta abide by, although different people might have slightly different interpretations. This is just my interpretation. Also, this did sort of start as a crackship for me but then I started actually thinking about it and, uh, I don’t think it’s a crackship anymore when I’ve written nearly 50k words of fanfic for it on my AO3…

For starters, I began shipping Hiorin based on one singular interaction. It also happens to be the only one of two times where they properly talk to each other at all. This interaction (below) comes from the U-20 match, right after Rin has been roundhouse kicked in the face by Shidou. It was a moment that surprised me because despite spending the match getting progressively more and more aggressive to everyone else, Rin here isn’t aggressive towards Hiori. He lets Hiori help him up and they even manage to engage in a very brief but mutual conversation.

Now sure, Hiori is just being nice here and Rin is probably a bit stunned. They haven’t interacted since this moment in the manga and likely won’t again in any real capacity. Still, it was this interaction that got me trying to imagine what it might look like if they could be closer — mostly in the context of Rin actually being able to make a proper friend. He does seem to have a certain level of tolerance for Hiori that he doesn’t for the rest of Blue Lock (which I’ll explain later), plus Hiori is probably the only one patient, kind AND calm enough to be capable of being Rin’s friend without Rin despising it. Other kind characters like Nanase and Bachira are in my opinion too bubbly and talkative in canon for Rin’s more broody personality (although I do love a good sunshine x storm-cloud ship don’t get me wrong). Meanwhile, Hiori is equally as kind but calmer. More quiet. He’s also not got a drive to try and defeat Rin or devour him, which I think Rin would appreciate given he hates people who do try to go against him like Isagi and Shidou.

The only other substantial interaction we have for hiorin comes from the Third Selection tryouts match in which they’re placed on the same team. I’ve already made a post about it so go to that here for the relevant screenshots from the manga. I will copy over the conclusions from the post though. From this match I inferred that:

Hiori can keep up with Rin like it’s a regular day (speaking to Hiori’s adaptability)

This, for Rin, translates to “Hiori is reliable”

Rin can trust Hiori to definitely get the ball to where it needs to be if they cooperate, even though they’ve never played together before (and they didn’t even discuss a plan beforehand but were able to immediately link up without issue — see again Hiori being adaptable)

Rin doesn’t look down on Hiori the way he does with Isagi or Shidou, probably because he doesn’t see Hiori as a threat or insulting

This concludes all of their interactions in the manga. From here, me and other shippers use these small conclusions from canon as well as canon-adjacent information from things like the Egoist Bible Character Book to build a hypothetical situation in which they ARE able to start talking to each other more often and build a bond. Most of the fics about this pairing that take place in the canon universe will deal with overcoming the hurdle of ‘getting them to actually interact’. For us shippers, after that hurdle has been cleared it’s rather smooth sailing to imagine a relationship forming for a lot of reasons.

To begin, the obvious thing to focus on is their similar backstories. More specifically, the emotional responses they have to their backstories and how it could be a source of understanding between them (spoilers for the manga up to chapter 206). The resentment Rin holds towards Sae is incredibly similar to the resentment Hiori holds towards his parents. Both have canonically been shown wanting to hurt/kill their family members due to how these family members treated them, as well as the feelings of false love associated with these family members being a big part of why Rin and Hiori want to hurt them. Rin feels betrayed by Sae because he thinks Sae pretended to love him and care about him in their childhood to further his own ambition only to throw it all away like it was meaningless, meanwhile Hiori feels that his parents don’t actually love him and only want him to be the best because they never could be. This similarity is something that us shippers tend to use as way for Hiori to be able to understand Rin in a way that other characters can’t, as well as a way for Rin to be able to actually articulate his emotions surrounding Sae to someone who is able to understand him to a certain degree and won’t think he’s being “too edgy” or “over-reacting”. We can count in Hiori to not be judgemental of Rin.

Beyond their families though, the two of them just have similar interests and personalities. Rin likes horror games (Egoist Bible) and Hiori is a gamer. They’re both quiet, more reserved and Hiori’s ideal type in a romantic partner is someone who will leave him alone a lot (Blue Lock wiki). They’re ‘no-nonsense’ people who prefer to be blunt and to the point. It might seem a bit superficial but considering they basically never interact, it’s rather a lot to go on.

Overall, the completely made up dynamic that has been created by us shippers after taking all of this information into account goes something like this:

Rin doesn’t find Hiori as annoying or threatening as the rest of Blue Lock because Hiori is adaptable, no-nonsense and doesn’t try to come for Rin’s position as number 1

Hiori has an understanding of Rin’s trauma because he himself experienced something incredibly similar

They get over the ‘start talking’ hurdle and begin to realise that they actually have similar interests and can hold a conversation for longer than 2 seconds

The relationship builds from there, with Hiori being the ‘exception’ in Rin’s life and Rin being a safety where Hiori can talk about his true feelings without having to filter himself or be kind

In terms of other headcanons, these are a couple that I’ve seen floating around:

Neither of them like PDA very much. You might see them holding hands if you’re lucky

They play co-op together a lot, especially co-op horror games

They don’t pry into each other’s business. If one of them wants to talk about something, they will

It isn’t a depressing relationship though, mostly because Hiori is a light in Rin’s life and Rin feels like he can be more ‘the old him’ around Hiori (see: Rin’s light novel)

They both like striped clothing (see: Rin’s casual design and Hiori’s onesie, coaster design and child design)

And with that, I have finally finished my overly long, overly indulgent explanation into why I and others ship hiorin. I'd be in mostly fluff fanfics with a few angsty ones, Takumi in mostly hurt/comfort, Satoshi mainly angst and Arisu 99% fluff

My friend once said I'd go well with Hiori and yes I see it. Also maybe Kuon?? Both queerplatonicalny of course (don't tell Claire about the Kuon part they will kill me for saying this.)

For Takumi, it'd be Barou. They have the potential and I think about them a lot😔 also if Takumi was canon there'd be Sae x Takumi shippers which I think is funny

For Satoshi, it'd be Kaiser. Enemies to lovers.

What made you ship it?

I came across 2 posts on tumblr that completely changed my life (this one and this one). @hiorintruther (I let myself tag you because you are the person who unknowingly recruited me to the Hiorin shippers group) portrayed this ship so brilliantly that I couldn't help but fall under the spell of Hiori and Rin together, and I started binge reading Hiorin fics. Thanks to you I descover the Hiorin's truth, so thank you ♡

What are your favorite things about the ship?

They are simply made for each other. Hiori is the only person Rin hasn't approached in an aggressive or passive-aggressive manner. Hiori didn't hesitate and gently approached and helped Rin. Their first official interaction is absolutely perfect. Rin had never made such a silent understanding with anyone else. Especially since they share a similar trauma related to family members. Thanks to this, they can understand themselves on a completely different, higher level. I could go on and on about what I love about this ship, but these posts, which I linked in question 1, have it all. So in short, neither Rin nor Hiori could have formed such a bond with any other person.

Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship?

Maybe that's naive of me. Hiorin is a rare pair, but I believe it can grow much more. So what if they have almost no interactions? Sakusa and Atsumu from Haikyuu! also had very few panels together compared to the entire series, but Sakuatsu is one of the most popular Haikyuu ships and is also in the top 100 ao3 ships (it is also my favorite ship in general). So I think that Hiorin can stop being a rare pairing and become more popular.

I reckon Rin wants to try and find a horror game so scary that Hiori freaks out… unfortunately for him Hiori doesn’t find horror games very scary

Rin back-hugs Hiori, wraps his legs around Hiori’s waist and rests his chin on Hiori’s shoulder, just silently watching while Hiori plays RPGs

They backseat-game each other SO much

Hiori actually knows how to trash talk better than Rin ever will (okay, the bar isn’t very high admittedly), he just chooses to keep this talent at bay most of the because he knows he’d be too powerful otherwise (/hj)

However, if Rin is (embarrassingly) struggling in a game and getting made fun of in voice chat, Hiori steals the headset and spews the most obscene spiel of curses and insults in his signature kansai dialect. When the game is over, he immediately goes back to his usual self as if nothing happened

When they’re watching horror movies together, they’ll sometimes absent-mindedly feed one another snacks

They sometimes make fun of the horror movies they watch if the movies are bad, pointing out all of the tropes and predicting how the movies will end

Neither of them are big on PDA at all… or going out together in the first place for that matter

They prefer to be indoors whenever showing any level of affection

Neither of them are big kissers. Hugs are good enough most of the time but the occasional peck on the lips is welcomed (am I also perhaps feeding you my ace/arospec Rin agenda? Maybe…)

Rin can be averse to hugs sometimes too… but Hiori has this one onesie that’s particularly fluffy and makes him very huggable

Hiori usually lets Rin initiate intimacy because while they’re both pretty reserved about it, Rin is more so

Hiori likes the fact that Rin gives him a lot of time to himself (this is literally his type guys the egoist Bible says so)

Rin is abhorred by Hiori’s diet of mostly convenience store food and insists on making a proper meal schedule (EDIT: Hiori’s diet is shit as an act of rebellion against his parents, who controlled his diet from a young age to an insane degree. Rin doesn’t control it nearly as much, he just wants to make sure Hiori doesn’t end up with a fibre and calcium deficiency).

When Hiori gets back pain from gaming all day and night, Rin teaches him some yoga exercises to help ease things

And my personal favourite hc:

Rin used to hate the colour cyan because his eyes are such a similar colour (teal) but Hiori makes him hate it a little less every day

Time for me to crawl back into the shadows and concoct even more rarepair hcs for these two because they have my whole heart and I get them all to myself muahahahahhahaha 😈
