I never talked about this on the 8th, I kinda just reblogged my one post about Dracula digging facial hair, but rereading Three Letters by BlueCatWriter reminded me of this internal connection I made in my head that I never saw anyone else bring up. Maybe they didn't bring it up because it's stupid, but I'm depressed, so I need something.
EDIT: fuckin bluecat wrote another fic where Dracula is being a pervert about the beard and now I'm even more depressed joiegrp
Anyway anyway anyone know about Peter the Great? The first emperor of Russia. He's regarded as "great" for looking at Western Europe and saying "... we should do that". One of the funniest Westernization routes he took was forcing the nobles to shave their beards because it was seen as very Slavic to have big bushy beards while men in the West shaved. Men who refused to shave were either physically forced to or made to pay a tax to keep their facial hair.
Now, Romania was not under the Russian Empire, it was split into Moldavia, Transylvania, and Wallachia, which were independently run for a time. And Romania is not a Slavic country by any means, it is more closely related to its Latin counterparts than to its Slavic counterparts. So, to be clear, I am not trying to make a comparison that is Slavic culture vs Western culture, because it wouldn't make sense.
It's a shaky comparison with my shaky outsider knowledge, BUT! Like Peter policed the nobles' appearances to strip them of their culture and replace it with Westernism, Dracula, by refusing Jonathan the ability to shave, strips him of his culture and replaces it with his own ideals about a man's appearance.
Attitudes towards facial hair are always fluctuating, but particularly after the Crimean War, I believe shaving grew more popular in England when soldiers who had to shave for hygiene reasons returned from the war. In general, if you were to have a beard, it was prudent for it to be more than just a little stubble (men growing moustaches would fill in their moustaches with makeup or wear a fake until they grew in completely) and you simply must keep it well-maintained! Like a little garden hedge on your face. Otherwise, you look like an unkempt slob.
So, apart from clean-shaven-ness being deemed more Western, it's simply a matter of pride for any man to style his facial hair or lack thereof however he pleases as a means of self-expression and personal hygiene. Dracula denies Jonathan that vehicle of self-expression and forces him into a state of dysphoria.
Tsk tsk all because he's into bearded men.

Presenting the Great Western Railway 85xx Stone Circle class. This engine came from a discussion with a friend about a 'what if' next step for Great Western Express Locomotives had nationalization not occured. It's not a Cathedral, but a further design. Some history on these giants.
8500 Ring of Brodgar was the prototype, and would be purchased by a private owner before being officially being withdrawn from service. Upon her owner's death in 1982, she was donated to the National Collection.
8501 Mitchel's Fold was the first production 85xx. She would be rescued from Barry's Scrapyard in 1973 by a preservation group dedicated to saving and restoring her. While the group would go on to save other engines after her restoration, she remains their pride and joy.
8502 Avebury was included in the purchase of the Kingsbridge Branchline from British Railways by the Kingsbridge Preservation Group. She would serve as the line's main attraction until the late seventies, when she was withdrawn from service for overhaul. It wouldn't be until 1998 that she would return to service. Since then she has spent the majority of her time in service, although she is currently awaiting overhaul.
8503 Callanish Stones would be purchased directly from British Rails by the Great Western Society.
8504 Castleriggs Stones would be wrecked in 1965 on an embankment. British Rails determined it would cost more to recover the stricken engine then she was worth in scrap, so the engine was left abandoned. In 1968 the Severn Valley Railway Society approached BR for permission to recover the engine. After negotiations they were given a 24 hour window to bring Castleriggs Stones back to the rails. In the waning hours of May 13th, 1969, Wrexham Cathedral pulled her newly righted cousin back onto the rails. She was found to be in shockingly good condition, having been mostly sheltered from the weather by the embankment. She would steam for the first time in 12 years in 1977.
8005 Boscawen-Un was purchased for testing by the London North Eastern Railway. Upon Nationalization she remained with the Eastern Region. When Gywneth Amari purchased the former Great Central line in 1966, 8005 was allocated to the line, and transfered to her ownership. It is hard to say which angers Great Western purists more, that she is in LNER Apple Green, or that is historically accurate.
8006 Nine Ladies would the last withdrawn from service. The workers at Swindon hid her on unused sidings, moving her evertime she was discovered, until BR just gave up and donated her to the Dart Valley railway in late 1969 just to be rid of her. Donated her as in dumping her in their yard with ownership papers left in the cab.
8007 Merry Maidens was allocated to the Midland region in 1962, and was painted in their maroon livery. Less than a year later she was scheduled for immediate withdrawl, the first of the class to be withdrawn, only for the engine to disappear. In 1973 she would be found by volunteers on the Coleford Preservation Railway in an abandoned shed during an expansion project, hidden by her old crew

30(already answered)
31) also already answered bur 3 facts are repeatable. 1. When I was a a kid my leg faced too far inward. The elementary school had funds for physical therapy but they over-corrected and then the funds ran out so now my right legs faces too far out in my natural stance and walk. 2. When I was 9 I was 5'9ft tall. Looking at my school photos where they made me stand with the teacher in school photos im almost a whole foot taller than the rest of my classmates. 3. I kind of stole one of those Herb growers that use solar light to grow herbs in the kitchen. My mom had it sitting in it's box for 3 years and I took it and zip tied it to my beds headboard. I've been using it to fight the winter depression and I think it's working quite well.
35. Favorite subject was art. I do love art still but looking back I kind of hated text based assignments. Having the teacher tell you yours was the most interesting to read. Having the teach use your essay in an example of a good job. And then getting it back and you got graded a c+ for grammar mistakes. Like I understand for English and language classes but it felt bad that even if you were excelling you couldn't get a decent grade for the little things as a young kid. Art was something I felt didn't hold me back in that way.

when teachers complain about students being passed on to the next grade when they’re obviously behind on grade level by two+ years/grades, why do parents automatically point their fingers at their teachers lmao?? yes students missed up to 1.5-2 years in face-to-face learning due to the pandemic and the remote learning policies depending on their location so now that they’re back for in-person learning like we’re just doing our job and teaching them to the best of our abilities, but due to the curriculum and the policies in place (depending on where you live obvs), we have no choice but to pass them on. teachers make attempts to bring attention to a student’s attendance and grades to their parents but if the parents can’t follow up on the emails we send, the phone calls we make, the voicemails we leave and the parent-teacher conferences requests we send, then that sends a clear message that you don’t care about your kids education beyond the bare fucking minimum.
we get it, parents are busy and have jobs and other priorities and every parent and student has a different story. but if your kid is 12 y/o and is in the 7th grade and is reading/writing at a 4th grade level, is incapable of reading a 200 page novel and goes straight to tiktok or to their ps5 immediately after school, then we are not the problem!!!
