"The problem with trying to be historically accurate, is that history doesn't care"
So much of the time we think of historical cultures as being very uniform, but people have always been weird, and our expectations of past behaviour don't always match the reality!

Sam Pepys, to the surprise of no one
Real answer if you DARE question for the mutuals and followers: Who is your most embarrassing historical crush?
I mean a historical figure who is embarrassing chiefly because of their actions and beliefs, not because they're not conventionally attractive. (Although being conventionally unattractive can play a role in this, I admit).

Does anyone else spend an inordinate amount of time thinking how the Trojans are legendary for their protective barrier getting penetrated in the stupidest way possible, and now they're the namesake for one of the largest condom companies in the world?
Or is that just me?

the problems about being in the silm fandom…
nobody’s in the silm fandom.
…at least, people I’ve met in real life. There’s an amazing community here on tumblr with a good amount of (super talented!!) people in it, but so far I’ve barely met a single one in real life.
Which makes about sense, considering most people, especially considering that I’m in an academia environment with other young people that think of lotr more of an “old-timey,” “stuffy,” and “another one of those old classic boring books our teachers make us read,” and sure, yeah it’s sort of justified for them to think that, but it just makes me go ARRRGH YOU JAIL CROW OF MANDOS
I’ve met a fair amount of people who’ve at least watched the movies or read some of the og trilogy and the hobbit (yay!)…but haven’t read Tolkien’s other books, such as the silm (nay!).
…THE PROBLEM WITH THIS THOUGH is that I, being an avid Tolkien nerd, get beyond excited to hear them say “oh I’ve watched the movies and they were pretty good :)” and dump a butt ton of lore on them.

so who's here up for the hc that aziracrow went to a victorian wedding as a couple in the 1810s bc crowley was presenting fem at the time (she was curious abt the dresses) and women couldn't go without chaperone to parties like that (crowley could've easily miracled everyone there to let her in alone but she wanted to pretend for a few hours that she was aziraphale's so she made some excuses abt performing too many miracles lately and aziraphale was more than happy to go anyway) so crowley invited aziraphale and was screaming internally the whole time (aziraphale was just enjoying the wedding, completely oblivious.)

"The Cipher was the Song": The Musgrave Ritual and Nemo Holmes
Tumblr media
In reading the script for The Final Problem I inevitably returned to the puzzle of the fake gravestones and whether the code works.
Tumblr media
Clearly, if this was going to be worked out, it would've been done long ago by someone much cleverer than me, a new fan with a dodgy brain, but hey ho...
So here we have the numbers:
Tumblr media
And the song:
Tumblr media
BUT, it doesn't quite work from the numbers we're given. After the numbers on the third gravestone, we're missing:
28, 1, 2, 3, and 8 = 281238
Corresponding with the words:
LOST WITHOUT YOUR LOVE SAVE
This post by @ explains the theory that most makes sense and immediately became my head canon: the cipher does work, if there is a fifth fake gravestone. And we know that there is. Sherlock's. If we take his date of death as 2/8/12 and his age as 38, it works.
The shooting script somewhat supports this- notice how "NEMO HOLMES" is given its own line as though it's a separate piece of code.
However, where would this "date of death" come from? Did Sherlock fake his death on the 2nd of August, 2012?
John's first blog entry following Sherlocks's death is 6th June and I don't know what year it was actually posted, and The Reichenbach Fall first aired on the 5th of January 2012. Even if we go all American with the date, and why would we, we still have the Fall occuring after the episode was broadcast in reality and not even slightly lining up with John's blog.
But... it's television. The writers very much seem to have forgotten that the "real" online blogs existed in season four and they have given us contradictory information prior to this too; in The Empty Hearse Mary says "finally, the famous blog" as if she's never seen it before, but in "blogland" she's bloody commented on it! And as for the episode release date, we know that A Scandal in Belgravia too place over several months, release dates mean nothing. But to my mind it IS weird that it would ever have happened in world after in real life.
But again... it's not real. Slip-ups happen.
It's entirely possible that the entire thing with the unworkable cipher was just a mistake, and I know that.
But, are there any other possibilities? Does NEMO HOLMES somehow equate to 281238 or LOST WITHOUT YOUR LOVE SAVE in some other undiscovered way?
Again, if it did, someone cleverer would've already cracked it. But...
After some brief googling I can tell you that the Odyssey, which we get 'Nemo' from, was written in the 7th or 8th century BC and the surname Holmes was first recorded in about 1300 AD. I can also tell you that you can buy a chair called Nemo 28 Stone and that an artist called Nemo had a song called 'The Code' in the 2024 Eurovision Song Contest. That's where I'll leave it!
And, I'm really not sure that any of it would work 'in-world'. Eurus' god-like powers of deduction allow her to predict terrorist attacks from Twitter, sure, but do they enable her to predict a faked suicide over three decades in advance? Would this even be what was meant, or would it be intended as a nice little easter egg from the writers? Is nothing meant to be real? Or was it just a standard slip-up?
I solemnly swear that show I ever become trapped in a lift with Steven Moffat or Mark Gatiss, I will absolutely ask.
For now, the headcanon continues!

work related question does anyone have any fun anime for likely 12-14 year olds that to their ulta-conservative conspiracy theory parents would have no objectionable content whatsoever that's not like . pokemon. i live in the most conservative area in michigan btw /hj
#gu6chan's musings#tl;dr so idk if i ever mentioned on this blog but i live in a very small town (less than 900 people in the TOWNSHIP which is like#...3? different towns? maybe 4)#i digress#and since i work in a public position its like#i've been trying to organise more community events this summer ESPECIALLY among the youth#and was like 'we can try appealing to hobbies; i think' and listed a couple suggestions like this and that#so i was talking to my higher ups about it and they were like 'OH! youre super into anime right'#and i was like 'uh... sure???' bc i hadn't seen ANYTHING in a hot second and am still stuck in 2008 so i dont know any new series#but they knew i was a bit of a nerd and weren't as acquainted being older so i can't blame them!! lol#anyways long story short there's been an anime club they've been trying to kickstart for like the last... 3 years?#for the local middleschool/highschool except they haven't been able to find any way to get the word accross#and i was like neato; cool; i'd love to help with that!! and told them i'd make a poster for it real quick (still haven't. work is tomorrow#so they gave me the login to crunchyroll (my first time using it) and were like 'go find some anime that kids might like!!! :)'#and i was like '...WOAH.' and told them it'd take a second bc this area is VERY conservative and there's a bit of cultural dissonance when#it comes to 'kid-appropriate' between japan and the US; particularly with nudity lmao#and a lot of even what's popular among kids (Chainsaw man; Jujutsu Kaisen i think?) wouldn't fly but ouaahahhgh#it still has to be entertaining to them and not feel like it's being 'dumbed down' i have a couple ideas like sailor moon; uhh....#cardcaptor sakura?#but those are mostly shoujo anime which is good!! But i'd also like to include some shounen-type stuff as well for balance ofc#and that's where the problem arises 😭 i'd also love to take a look at older anime since i'm still figuring out what the 'goal' of the club#is besides just having a place for kids to interact and make friends with each other like#do i want it to be based in looking at the history of anime as an art form and its evolution? should it be like a book club and more focuse#on discussing character arcs and writing? or maybe even linguistically based since I did mention wanting to help inspire kids to take up#different languages!! and i know a lot would love to learn japanese#but yeah a lot to figure out 😭 i might be cooked chat

Okay, so the bank robbery episode of Daredevil Born Again.....I feel like that was the first bad episode I've seen so far in the series. I know people are upset because Foggy is dead, but y'all have got to remember that if you yell at Marvel loud enough they will bring a character back in some form or another. And that's because they care about what their fans have to say and also because comic books were not always a multi-billion dollar industry. Marvel almost went bankrupt in the 90s, remember?
The only reason why they didn't is because the former chairman of Marvel Comics Ike Perlmutter sold off film rights of Marvel properties. That's how Fox ended up with X-Men, Hulk ended up with Universal, and Sony got Spiderman. Fox did not invent X-Men. Look it the fuck up -- please, I am begging you. Cause every time some idiot says Fox invented X-Men even though there are behind the scenes interviews with STAN FUCKING LEE on the DVDs -- the creator of the X-Men and one of the moguls of the Marvelverse itself -- I die a little inside.
Marvel and DC -- cause they do this too by the way -- had no choice but to resurrect dead characters way back in the 1960s before the MCU had been even thought of. Because people stop buying books when their favorite characters die, and you cannot print the books without a roof over your fucking head. It's not so much a capitalistic ploy as much as it is a way to AVOID HOMELESSNESS. Because making comics like any career in the arts doesn't pay well, and comic book writers and artists get very little respect for their work because of asshole art snobs and book snobs who think comics are beneath them.
So I'm not upset that Foggy Nelson is dead because I know that he will be back. We will see him in a dream sequence or in a flashback or some random cameo somewhere, but he will be back. That being said, the bank robbery episode felt completely out of place in the Born Again series. It's meant to be a pointless filler fluff episode and that's exactly what it is in the worst way possible. There's very little tying it back to the central plot of Mayor Fisk and the serial killer Muse.
And I can't help but wonder if that episode was salvaged from the original script that got scrapped and rewritten. Cause, from my understanding, that original script was a water downed and more family friendly version of Daredevil. That's basically what that was.
I also don't love how they are making Kamala Khan and the female superheroes the new face of family friendly Marvel. Like that's insulting and misogynistic on multiple levels because it implies that women and girls not only don't like action and gore but that we are also incapable of watching it. So thank you, Moms 4 Liberty and helicopter parents everywhere, for perpetuating that stereotype.

I forgot that people outside of Tumblr don't actively keep the Ides of March on their calendar bc I was talking to my uncle who was visiting from out of state, and he was all, "oOoh it was pie day yesterday!" and I said, "Yes! And today is the 2,000 some odd year anniversary of the assassination of Julius Caesar! Happy Ides of March!!!"
He did NOT find that fact fun.

Can law school chill out for five seconds I wanna write fanfic...
Anyway, its real interesting switching between fics for my two main fandoms, Demon Slayer and Xenoblade Chronicles. I tend to write from Tanjirō or Shulk's pov and while Tanjirō likes to inner monologue Shulk says inner monologue? hold my beer. Bro does not stop thinking and overthinking about everything. I love him but he's making me write stuff that has science/engineer vibes. He's making hypotheses and contemplating weapons designs and subsequently extending scenes far more than originally planned.
It's fun and frustrating at the same time. I enjoy getting into a different mindset ngl and rereading my own work and feeling a difference between the POVs.

idk how to explain it but even tho i love "prologue" very very much and think it's a great book i don't think i would recommend it to anyone unless they're, like, very interested in russian hist of 1855-1863 or something. i am not really sure the first part would be that interesting if you're not a history nerd of some sort. or a communist maybe
