My thoughts on the new Hifuu Album

Well, Taboo Japan Disentanglement just came out! after reading the story and listening to the tracks, I thought I'd share my thoughts on the album!

The tracks

I'm going to go through the album tracks in order and give my individual thoughts on them.

1 - Morning Comes on Tanabata Hill (Original)

This is surprisingly emotional for an opening track. The new drum set here is wonderful, and the piano is soothing and atmospheric. I do think the melody is kind of all over the place though, and it's a bit hard to follow. All in all, a really nice calming song.

2 - Tinkerbell of Inequality (Original)

I've been excited to listen to this one ever since the album got announced because of the interesting title, and HOLY SHIT THIS SONG IS AMAZING. The instrumentation is so weird but oh so good. The track is ominous but jazzy. The melody is catchy. It reminds me of GFC and CoSD, with it's apocalyptic futuristic vibe. This is easily the best track in the album. Solid.

3 - Does the Forbidden Door Lead to This World, or the World Beyond? (HSiFS arrangement)

Now we get to the arrangements. The song is sporting a new drum set and piano, and I can safely say that the instrumentation is a huge improvement to the original. To be frank, I'm not too much of a fan of HSiFS's instrumentation, now don't get me wrong, the songs are great, but they suffer a bit because the instruments ZUN uses are a bit lackluster. Here, that is not the case, this a great arrange. Something I do want to note, is that the BPM of the arranges seems to be lowered a bit from their original counterparts. Not a bad thing, but it's interesting to keep in mind as you keep listening.

4 - Smoking Dragon (UM arrangement)

HOOOOOOLYYYYYY SHIIIIIIIT. The key change. the new drumset. the new, climactic/triumphant atmosphere. The new section added in??? It's all so perfect, this does the original song justice. I love this so much. One of my favorite arranges in the whole album.

5 - Mugen Noh ~ Taboo Marionette (Original)

This song is calming, but sinister sounding as well. It hits a nice balance of calming and uneasy. The instrumentation, once again, is really good here. I do feel that the electric guitar a bit later in feels a bit out of place, but in general, the song creates a really good atmosphere, and it's definitely a standout track.

6 - Crazy Backup Dancers (HSiFS arrangement)

I don't really have much to say about this one, other than that it's a fairy good arrangement of the original song. ZUN added a new synth(?) into the mix, which gives it a distinct sound from the original. It's fun!

7 - Yorimashi Between Dreams and Reality ~ Necro-Fantasia (AoCF arrange)

ZUN. you can't keep getting away with this. This is peak. The song has a newly added intro of the Necrofantasia main theme before the song kicks in, and WOW does it create an atmosphere. The instrumentation is once again great and the key change (that just dissapears half-way through lmao) is also really cool. This is a great track.

8 - The Lonesome Path in Hitachi (Original)

A surprisingly upbeat track given the title. It's composed in swing rhythm, and because of that, it kinda reminds me of Let's Live in a Lovely Cemetery and Like the Brilliance of Fairies. Not that that's a bad thing, but it does make it sand out a bit less for me. Still a good track, though! Also ZUN chill out with those reverbs

9 - The Lamentations Known Only by Jizo (WBaWC arrange)

I like the new choir here, it makes it sound more dramatic. I am a bit disappointment that the flute kind of overshadows the Spooky Lead from the original, but it's not a bad arrangement at all. And man this drum set is really doing wonders rn

10 - The Concealed Four Seasons (HSiFS arrange)

WOW. TALK ABOUT A GREAT FINALE. This arrangement tweaks just enough without completely changing the vibe of the original song, and it's fantastic. About halfway through, there's a key change that makes it sort of feel like a phase 2 to the song, and it really completes the whole package. Fantastic.

11 - Apparitions Abound Even Outside of Night (Original)

Oh cool, what a nice, calming, uplifting trac- ZUN WHAT ARE YOU DOING. So the song starts off very calming and atmospheric, and then turns into digi-rock like a minute in. It's kind of jarring but I think it works, the song is still fantastic, and does a good job wrapping things up for the album, and the story. Speaking of which...

The story (spoiler warning)

Without going into too much detail, because I highly recommend you read the story on your own, the predictions of Merry and Renko being separated where not exactly wrong, although I think the story was a lot less heartbreaking than everyone thought it would've been. It serves as a nice drama and really shows how these characters relate to each other. Seeing Renko drop everything just to save Merry shows that even if they get on the wrong foot, they're still the Hifuu club, through and through.

In conclusion, this album is absolutely stellar. ZUN's instrumentation this time around is incredibly diverse, and I can tell he was having fun experimenting. The story is also well written, showcasing these two characters and their conflicting yet similar ideals. Please, go give this album a listen! It may have been 8 years since the last hifuu album, but it was definitely worth the wait.

You sit at one of the tables, exhausted after a night full of bowing and talking to, what feels like, everyone in the world. You regret wearing heels, having been on your feel for an ungodly amount of time. You could force your feet into pointe shoes and balance your entire body weight on them, but high heels are where you drew the line.

From your seat, you kept an eye out for Ae-Cha and Min-Jun who were both starstruck and talking to seniors from the company. They both respected the 2 drink limit you had put in place and were drinking water. You still watch them, the last thing you want is one of them mouthing off to a senior.

You feel someone sit down next to you. You turn and bow only to be met by Changbin. The boys had stayed huddled together most of the night, mingling as different subunits. You hadn't seen a single one break off on their own the entire time.

"Finally tired of the crowd, Changbin sunbaenim?" You ask, scooting your chair closer to his.

"Please stop with the formalities, nobody is around. Just be casual." He sighs, throwing his arm around your chair.

"Not taking that chance, sunbaenim."

The boys had gotten signed after last year's end of the year showcase. Sometime you forget that they're already signed. President Park is serious about his idol's education, especially if he scouts them from the university. One of the stipulations to signing with him if he chooses to sign a JYPU student is that they have to finish their degree before he fully throws them out into the world. They still get funding for their work and a stipend to help with living expenses. The stipend still isn't enough to help with the cost of living, which is why some of the boys have jobs on top of everything. Despite not being full artist with the company yet, They've already come out with 9 albums and are currently working on their 10th. Where they find the time? You have no idea.

"Having fun?" Changbin asks, leaning in closer to you. From the corner of your eyes you can see Hyunjin staring at the two of you. You quickly move your eyes elsewhere, settling on Felix and Chan who seem to have found Ae-Cha.

"Honestly? I hate events like this. Their only function is to flaunt how much money you have and brag about how successful you are. I wouldn't be here if I didn't have to." You sigh.

"Been to many galas, have we?" He chuckles.

"Yes, actually,"

"You have?" He stares at you, mouth agape. It's only natural, the only one who knows about your past is Felix.

"My parents own a big tech company back in Australia. You use some of their products, actually. So does the school. They would drag me to these things when they remembered that they had a daughter and wanted to appear like the perfect, nuclear family." You play with the hem of your dress, remembering how you hated these types of events. The fights you would have in protest. Nearly having a panic attack from the crowds and the overwhelming nature of it. Not having a panic attack because your brother was next to you the whole time, calming you down.

Hyeon

"Holy shit, you're an heiress." Changbin murmurs from your side. You quickly turn to him and see his phone open on the Wikipedia page about your parents' company.

"No I'm not," You quickly pull his phone out of his hand and close the page. The last thing you need is him scrolling down and finding the part about your brother. You get enough pity from Felix, Ae-Cha, and Min-Jun, you don't need it from him too.

"Well according to that Wikipedia page that you so rudely stole, you are." He tries to reach for his phone but you pull it out of his reach.

"I refuse any part of that company and they cut me off because of it so, no I'm not. Let's just change the subject, please." He tries to reach for his phone again. You quickly shove it into the pocket of the shorts under your dress.

He leans back, defeated, and scooches closer to you. You watch as your friends all socialize with other members of the company. Jisung and Minho are off at another table, talking quietly while Hyunjin and Jeongin chat with with Seungmin and another person next to them. Hyunjin laughs at something Seungmin said, laughing and clapping. He turns his head and makes eye contact with you briefly.

"Everyone is talking about you guys. And the songs you guys released this week. I get why you couldn't spend as much time with me recently." His mouth gets dangerously close your ear.

"Is it at least good? What they're saying I mean." You ask, trying to ignore the smell of alcohol from Changbin. He only had one drink, but whatever it was still lingered on him.

"It's all good. They're worried you guys are going to come and take their jobs. You're that much of a threat to them. And damn, if I knew you could rap and sing like that, I would have taken full advantage of your talent for my project."

"I didn't even know I could sing or rap like that. Jun knew somehow because of much he was micromanaging me in the studio. I nearly killed him." You laugh, because you can laugh at it now but it was hell when you were working on the songs. You're thankful that all three of you decided to write the lyrics to your solo songs and your parts in your newest group song separately. Everything else was hell.

"Your music isn't the only thing they're talking about."

"Oh?" You turn your head and quirk your eyebrows at him.

"They're also talking about how hot you look in this dress." He whispers low in your ear, sending chills down your spine.

The dress that you found while out with Hyunjin was to perfect. You and you, Cha, and Jun decided that you wanted to arrive to the gala looking like a group so you decided on black to fit with the overall theme of Cerberus. Your dress was black and adorn with some patches or dark red gemstones and had off the shoulder faux feather strap sleeves. It was long, stopping in the middle of your calves with a slit that went high on your thigh. Hyunjin is the one who found it in the clearance section at one of the stores you went to. He insisted that you get it, even offering to pay for it if it was still too expensive.

Hyunjin

Your eyes wonder on their own until they land on Hyunjin who was staring at you again. Guilt washes over you when he turns away as Changbin's soft lips attach to your neck, nipping at the soft skin, earning a low moan from you. His hand lands on the expose part of your thigh. You leave him be for a second before you remember where you two were.

You were starting to feel guilty and a little bit bad about yourself for hanging out with both Hyunjin and Changbin. You felt guilty for spending more time with one over the other. Especially with your relationship with Hyunjin being more sexual in nature while your relationship with Changbin wasn't as much. Sure, you two have fun, but you've never gone past 3rd base. The idea of actively having sex with two different men while not being in a relationship with either one of them made you start to hate yourself a bit. If you crossed that line with Changbin, you might start to hate yourself more, even if you wanted to.

"Changbin, not here." You whisper, removing his hand. He detaches himself and stares at you.

"What happened to 'sunbaenim?'" He smirks, amused by all of this.

"You told me to speak casually." You smirk back.

"I change my mind, speak formally. You can even call me oppa again."

"I'm nowhere near drunk enough for that."

His hand finds its way on your thigh again. You suck in a breathe when it travels up. He quickly pulls his phone out of your shorts' pocket and puts it in his before he gives you a quick kiss.

"Let's get out of here. I can think of a few other fun things we can do instead." His hand slides back down to your outer thigh, drawing small circles with his index finger.

"Like what?"

"I can't say that here. Someone might be listening." He hums.

"I can't just abandon Cha and Jun like that."

"There's a bathroom."

"How romantic,"

"Just trust me. I promise I can treat you better than Hyunjin can. Let me show you." His hand slowly starts inching up again. You know he'll stop if you tell him to. He always does, but this time you don't want him to.

"O-okay," You grab his hand and grasp it firmly. He has a devious look in his eyes that you've never seen before. He quickly stands up and leads you away from the table.

I feel an unbelievable amount of gratitude for the opportunity to have made this album. Writing this record allowed me to grow up in ways I needed to. It forced me to reflect and be accountable. It allowed me to walk away from versions of myself that I no longer recognized. It allowed me to let go.

There will never be enough words to describe the gift that is Y/n's love. Holy shit, you are now my new favorite person-

A lot of my special interests right now mainly center around Will Wood, ROTTMNT, and human behavior as a whole.

With Will Wood's music, whether he intends it to be or not, is just so profound and well made and really makes me happy. The symbolism, the seemingly needless, lengthy words, and the themes he explores overall are just ground-breaking to me and I could analyze his stuff for days on end with a burning passion. And the way his music (both old and new) sounds?? LIKE WHAT??

I swear, no two songs of his sound the same, and I mean it in the best way possible. The pacing, the instrumental choice, really everything just feels uniquely respective to its own song and I am drooling over it.

Will Wood is easily one of the best musicians I have ever had the pleasure of discovering. When I found his stuff, I hadn't had a musical hyperfixation in actual years, but boy did listening to the normal album change that.

Like I said, the lyrics, the sounds of the music, and (what I believe is) the continued theme of normalcy while each song still tells its own theme/story?? It's just perfection to me, really-

As for ROTTMNT? Don't even get me started!

The animation is lively, colorful, and has a delightful, anime-ish style to it that just makes the whole show eye candy to me. The boxy(?) movement in certain scenes, the shading (especially in the movie), and the character designs?? Omg the character designs-

I love how Rise broke what I feel was the "copy-and-paste" style of design for the turtles, unlike the previous series (I'm not saying other TMNT shows were bad, but good lord the designs (looking at you, 2012) were...awful-). Each design feels respective to its own character and the diversity in appearance really helps the turtle's personalities, fighting style, and expression shine through.

And the turtles themselves? I simply just adore what the show did with their personalities and how they gave them more depth and really humanized them. Especially with Raph and Donnie. Especially Raph and Donnie.

Raph always came off as just "the angry one," and there was seemingly no reason for why and there was nothing else to him, when I tried getting into older series, and at times, it made me dislike him as a character. But in Rise? They made him into a gentle giant with different likes, dislikes, interests, strength, weaknesses, and gave him reason to be angry in certain scenarios, rather than feeding us the usual "pissed off all the time" Raph. In Rise, he just comes off as a reasonably tired, realistic older brother that cares about his family and just wants the best for everyone, even if there are times he comes off in the wrong way.

And I could go off about Donnie for days

But to keep it as short as I can; Donnie is to die for in Rise. He is more than just the "tech guy." He is shown to indulge in different interests and hobbies, he has vulnerable moments, he's sarcastically witty and deadpan, just everything I could want in a character like him.

And the way they handled autistic representation with Donnie?

*chef's kiss* 11/10 👌

He comes off a realistic, neurodivergent person that isn't weakened by his condition, and is instead just accepted as he is and plays a vital role to the brother's chemistry, unlike in most shows where the autistic character feels like an inconvenience, a man-child, an un-empathetic asshole, and/or too indulged in their hyperfixation to be useful, or that's all there is to them as a person.

Rise just got so many things right and I adore the show for it!

And lastly; with human behavior? It's certainly not as strong as the last two fixations, but I still find it rather interesting.

Everything we have been taught since birth feels black and white, especially with people's intentions and emotions. But, I don't think that's the case at all (in 95% of cases). People each have their own thoughts, feelings, and reasonings for why they do x, y, z, and I may not know everything about it, but Jesus Christ, it intrigues me so much.

I just wanted to write down my meeting Oscar experience so I never forget it.

It took nearly two hours to get through the line and I was sooo nervous (Luna had to leave me in the line in order to save our panel seats, Angel that she is.). But the folks around me were so kind, as were the staff helping us out.

Oscar didn’t get to everyone in line, they cut it off four ppl behind me, so I was very lucky to have been seen in in the morning signing.

The whole time I’m going through the line, there’s a speaker somewhere nearby playing some of my favorite new wave, post punk, 90’s alternative tracks and I’m singing along and that’s calming me down because HOLY SHIT IM ABOUT TO MEET OSCAR?!?. The elderly funko pop collector behind me is good naturedly teasing me about being “in loooooove with Ooooscaaar” and making me laugh and blush and panic. So I finally get behind the wall and I see him irl and omfg u guys he’s just so precious and smiling and chatting with the ppl ahead of me and his ears are so cute and his grey is perfect and his hands are beautiful and I’m grinning like a fool. Finally it’s my turn and Oscar says “hello!” And extends his hand Very warm and friendly and I say “hiii Oscar” in a way that’s unable to conceal my absolute joy at holding his hand and then his eyes get a little softer and he puts his other hand on top of mine and says “helloooo” again like the way one might say hello to a giggling infant. And that’s when I get lost in his eyes and step towards him DESPITE THERE BEING A TABLE BETWEEN US and I bump the table into him. I’m apologizing and he laughs and says “it’s okay!” He straightens the table, And then he asks his handler “where’d you put my pen, you’re always taking my pens… thank you.” And he looks at the book I brought, it’s a Dune artwork book, opened to the Leto page and he says “this is great… I love your little Atreides pins too!” Gesturing to my lapels. I thank him, and as he’s writing my name- I ask him, “how is your day going so far?” He smiles and says it’s going really well and asks how is my day. I said that I was feeling nervous but the music was making me feel better and I realize the music has been coming from a portable speaker behind him, I asked him if this playlist that has been playing was his personal playlist and he nodded and said “yes” and I said “you have good taste” and since the playlist was Pixies heavy I asked if he saw the Pixies on the latest tour, then we talked a little bit about the Pixies latest album and their latest tour, he wanted to go to the NYC show but couldn’t make it, I told him I saw them in my hometown of SD and he asked me how the San Diego crowd was and you guys he has the cutest active-listening face. Even though he talked to like 300 people before me, he was really kind and made me feel like the only person in the room, like he’s genuinely such a nice person.

I got my book from him and I held his hand one more time, thanked him very enthusiastically and told him I loved him and his eyes did THE CRINKLES and he said “you are so sweet”
