CHAPTER 21: IMPROVVISANDO
Music glossary: Improvvisando: with improvisation
Glossary: Wǎnshàng hǎo : Good evening Shīfù : Teacher/Master
(Mood music: Night of Beijing - Jia Peng Fang)
That evening
Marinette fidgeted with her napkin, occasionally sipping her now-lukewarm tea while sitting at the kitchen bar counter. Chat Noir sat on the stool beside her in silence, also nursing a half-emptied cup. She checked the clock for what seemed to be the hundredth time in the last few minutes.
“It’s about that time. I’ll head up to my room to let Ladybug inside. Will you get the door if your visitor arrives before she does?”
“Sure,” he replied, uneasy but compliant, doing his best to avoid staring at the black eye she’d received earlier that day.
Marinette set her cup in the sink and headed upstairs, leaving Chat alone with his thoughts.
He tried to keep his fast-beating heart in check, subconsciously clenching his jaw. It was finally happening. He was going to meet “him”: The Guardian of the Miraculous.
Following the events at school earlier that day, Adrien had walked Marinette to her house, where her family invited him to stay for a cup of tea until his “ride” arrived to pick him up. Of course, he’d eagerly accepted. It was nice to interact with the family as Adrien instead of just as Chat Noir.
After leaving, he hid away and transformed so he could sneak in through Marinette’s balcony as he usually did.
Upon transforming, however, he found a series of voice mails from Ladybug that she’d left during Adrien’s attempted abduction. Her voice was frantic. He could hear the urgency and distress in her tone, and a heavy blanket of guilt settled onto his shoulders as he listened.
The first message asked him to come to their school, that it was an emergency, to please call her back as soon as possible. He chewed on his lip, wanting nothing more than to hide away in a cave in shame.
The second one must have been left right after she’d rescued Adrien and left him at the school nurse; she’d called to let Chat know the incident had passed. Then she asked if he was okay, since she hadn’t heard back from him. He sighed. Typical Ladybug, always worrying and thinking about others first, even when she was having a rough time.
The last voicemail caused a trail of ice to trickle down his spine as he listened. Ladybug informed him that she had scheduled an impromptu meeting with the Guardian at the Dupain-Cheng’s house that evening, with Marinette’s permission, and that it was of utmost importance that he attend.
He shivered as goosebumps appeared on his arms and he swallowed hard. What was the purpose of this meeting? Was he in trouble for not showing up today during ‘Adrien’s’ kidnapping? And why meet here, at the Dupain home, instead of somewhere more private and away from civilians? What was the Guardian like? Would Chat get reprimanded and treated with disdain for having been their enemy for all these years, or would he be understanding and forgiving?
More importantly, would he have to disclose his identity to him, or to both him and Ladybug, to prove his loyalty? He winced at the mere thought of it. The last thing he wanted was for Ladybug to think less of him, or to pity him. Especially after the kidnapping attempt.
Additionally, if they were to learn that Hawkmoth was Gabriel Agreste, would they want to confront him head-on? Adrien didn’t feel ready for that, for several reasons.
First of all, would he be able to protect Ladybug, as he’d promised her? Hawkmoth had shown that he’d developed some sort of new power. Either that, or an entirely different person had become involved and was helping him. In any case, he didn’t know what exactly they were dealing with anymore.
Secondly, if the time came and he had to hurt or even kill his father, he didn’t know if he’d be able to do it. Yes, Gabriel was a monster and Adrien despised what he had become. But what if the damage was reversible and there was still a way to bring him back to normal? He just had to know, before doing something he might permanently regret.
The sudden ringing of the doorbell startled Chat out of his thoughts and he practically fell off his seat.
He ran to answer the front door, looking to make sure no one else was around. At the last second, he remembered to detransform and slip on the hood of his zip-up sweater (the one Marinette had gifted him), pulling a scarf over his nose and mouth so he wouldn’t be recognized if anyone outside were to catch a glimpse of him.
He looked out through the peephole, only to see the very top of someone’s head, balding with grey hair, and a little bit of their eyebrows.
Huh. Somehow Adrien thought the Guardian would be a bit… taller?
He turned the knob and the door opened, its squeaking hinges somehow louder than usual. Peeking out from the side like a scared tortoise, he checked to make sure the individual matched the description he was given, then stepped back to allow the door to swing open all the way. The older man stepped inside, closing it behind him.
“Hello,” Adrien said meekly, bowing his head slightly. “You must be…”
“Yes. I am Wang Fu,” he replied, bowing politely in greeting. “It is very good to see you again, Adrien Agreste.”
While Adrien’s face scarf efficiently concealed the way his jaw dropped when the elder man called him by name, there was no hiding the way his eyes grew to the size of dinner plates.
“W- what?!” he sputtered. “How did you—”
The man called Fu chuckled, stroking his beard. “It was a long time ago, but we’ve met before.”
Adrien lowered his scarf and frowned in concentration, falling silent for a few seconds. Then it dawned on him.
“YOU!!” he gaped. “I do remember you! It was my first day of lycée! You fell down in front of our school and I helped you up. It was you who put the cat miraculous in my bag that day, wasn’t it?”
“That is correct,” Fu confirmed.
“But why me? You could’ve picked anyone, so why did you choose someone like me?”
Fu’s smile faltered when he said this. Adrien had said “anyone”, but he could see that Fu knew what he’d actually meant. Why did you choose someone as broken as me?
The man folded his arms behind him, considering his answer. “Guardians are bestowed with several powers and abilities. One of them is to locate and select good candidates for the miraculous jewels. And so I was led to you.”
Chat grimaced in confusion. “So if you already knew it was me, why bother to ‘test’ me?”
“My powers as a guardian may lead me to a potential candidate, but ultimately the choice is still mine to make. It was a simple test, but it showed me what your first instinct would be if you saw someone in need. The answer I received was satisfactory. You were meant to be Ladybug’s Chat Noir.”
Adrien sighed, running a shaky hand through his hair. “Honestly, a couple of months ago I wouldn’t have known whether to hug you because I got to become Chat Noir, or whether to punch you because I had to become Chat Noir. But it’s because of you that I got to meet Ladybug, so I am grateful to you for that. It’s good to finally meet you. Officially.”
He extended his hand and Fu took it with a smile, giving it a firm shake.
Afterwards, Adrien’s gaze fell, brows scrunching together. “I can’t believe it. All this time, you knew. You could’ve told Ladybug who I was years ago. She could have figured out a way to take away my miraculous while I wasn’t transformed, like at school, and she would’ve had one less enemy to deal with. It would’ve––” he pursed his lips, expression full of shame, and he lifted his eyes to meet Fu’s once again, “–it would’ve made it easier for her. She would’ve suffered less if I’d been out of the picture. So why didn’t you?”
Fu’s countenance became somber, his eyes carrying years of pain and regret. He took a few moments to consider his words. “When I was a boy, barely a teenager, something terrible happened. Hundreds of innocent people died, and it was all because of me.”
Chat almost reeled back as if he’d been smacked across the face, puzzled about the sudden switch in topic. He remembered Ladybug briefly mentioning this a few months ago, on the night they danced together. He waited for Fu to elaborate.
“I was only trying to protect them,” the older man explained. “After I was orphaned as a child, the monks of the Guardian Temple took me in. They became my family. They were stern, but fair and kind. It was a tough childhood, but I was happy.” He sighed. “However, there were those who would try to steal the miraculous and use their power selfishly. It was an endless struggle. Many were lost over the years. I longed for peace. I wanted my family to be safe, I wanted us to be left alone. So I did what I thought would be a better route, an easier one; one with less hardship and bloodshed. You see, one day while I was supposed to be on guard duty, I sneaked away to where the miraculous box was kept. I put on both the ladybug and cat miraculouses and used them to make a wish: I wished that our enemies would disappear.”
The older man exhaled, squeezing his eyes shut, the memories of what came next clearly still haunting him. Adrien couldn’t help but hold his breath while he listened.
“It worked,” Fu resumed, voice quiet and slightly shaky. “But as you might have suspected, there is always a price to pay; a balance that must be maintained. Therefore, because of my wish, all the monks in our Guardian temple and the innocent people of the surrounding village were ripped away from me, along with our enemies. The wish was technically fulfilled, but I never suspected that the cost would be that high. I have had to live with that in my conscience for over a hundred years.”
He clasped his hands behind his back, appearing more vulnerable than Adrien would have ever expected. He continued, “Since that time, I have both seen and caused much death in my lifetime, protecting the miraculous box alone as the last Guardian. So, you see, if there was even one person I could save, I had to try. I wanted to trust in the miraculouses, like I should have decades ago, during my misguided attempt to control the outcome of a complicated situation.”
Adrien absently rubbed his arm, pondering Fu’s words. “Looking back,” he began, “I can see the reasoning behind a lot of Ladybug’s decisions and principles, now that I know your story.”
“Indeed. Ladybug is a remarkable young lady; I knew that even back then. When I would ask her if she was willing to risk her life for the sake of a stranger, she would say yes, every single time. If anyone can persevere for the greater good, it was her. Was it unfair of me? Probably. Have I asked too much from her? Absolutely. Have I made mistakes while trying to guide her? Yes. Many of them.” He put his hand on Adrien’s shoulder. “I wanted to save you that day by giving you the cat miraculous. But I never would have guessed that it would also doom you and force you into a role of servitude. I hope that you will forgive me for this.”
Adrien’s heart pained for Fu as he admitted his guilt. “You couldn’t have known it would’ve turned out that way. It wasn’t your fault,” he insisted.
Fu shrugged. “I try to tell myself that, but I can’t quite convince myself. The situation made sense once Ladybug told me about Hawkmoth.”
“You mean, when she told you that Hawkmoth was my father?” Adrien asked.
“Yes,” Fu replied. “I had my suspicions, because it would explain your motivations, but I had no proof, no way of finding out for sure. It made sense that Hawkmoth would be Gabriel Agreste. The butterfly miraculous requires its wielder to be creative and inventive, since it relies on their ability to convert the subject’s emotions into a source of power. And he had the motivation.”
Adrien hummed in agreement.
“Additionally, such a clever and talented individual getting ahold of the cat miraculous would be incredibly dangerous. I’d be lying if I said I had never considered taking your miraculous away. But even still, it was safer to let it all play out. I didn’t want to repeat past mistakes. And if Hawkmoth was Gabriel Agreste, your fate if you were to lose the cat miraculous would have been disastrous. Maybe it would have even alerted him about the presence of a Guardian in Paris. But now that we know the truth, we can plan accordingly.”
Adrien gulped. So Fu had considered taking his miraculous away before. “A-are you going to tell Ladybug who I am?”
Fu shook his head. “It is not up to me to decide when it will be right for there to be no more secrets between you two. I only know that it is not yet time.”
Adrien curiously tilted his head, brows furrowed in confusion. “How do you know that?”
As Fu started to answer, Adrien heard a doorknob twist open behind him and he quickly pulled his scarf back over his features.
The door opened and Ladybug’s voice exclaimed, “There you are! What are you two doing out here in the entryway?”
Adrien cleared his throat, then stammered, “R-right, pardon my manners. Please, come in.”
Fu walked past him, entering the living area. He took Ladybug’s hands between his, shaking them briefly, and said, “Wǎnshàng hǎo, Ladybug.”
With a small bow, Ladybug replied, “Wǎnshàng hǎo, shīfù. Thank you for coming at such short notice. Please, have a seat.”
Chat entered the room, having transformed now, and stepped forward to greet her.
He stopped short, realizing that he wasn’t quite sure how to greet her since last night’s development in their relationship, not to mention being very conscious of the Guardian watching them. He settled for a hug, which she returned, squeezing him tightly, and added a quick, discreet peck on his cheek. He smiled, feeling his face heat up.
Pleasantries aside and everyone seated, it was Ladybug who spoke first.
“Thank you both for being here. There’s a lot we need to talk about.”
----------
A transformed Wang Fu stood at the bedroom window, curtains drawn, chanting in a language that neither Ladybug nor Chat Noir understood, holding the last of several metallic talismans he’d blessed and scattered around the room. The pair kept their eyes on him, marveling at the efficiency and care that he put into each incantation. There was something sacred, even holy about this ritual. They could feel powerful magic emanating from his form, invisible bursts of energy swirling about the room, dancing all around them in a silent symphony.
Ladybug cast a furtive glance at her partner. He’d been quiet for a little while, after learning about his attempted akumatization the night before. Ladybug had told him that it was Marinette who let her know, and that Plagg was the one who had informed her.
She’d called Master Fu before going to school to let him know what happened last night, and he promised he would figure out a solution. He’d spent all day preparing these special talismans, which would ward off akumas and keep them from entering this room. But only this room. He wasn’t strong enough to cast such a potent, long-term spell over a larger area; especially not at his age.
Fu, or rather, Jade Turtle, was silent for a few moments after placing the last charm, a silver one with indecipherable symbols carved into it, then turned around to face the couple.
“The talismans are almost done being enchanted,” he said, pretty out of breath, beads of sweat present on his brow. “There is one more thing that needs to be done. But I think I’ll need your help for this, Ladybug.”
Ladybug stepped forward in response. “Sure, Master. What is it?”
“I would do it myself, but, well… let’s just say I’m not as young as I used to be.”
“Of course Master, anything you need. Just tell me what to do.”
Fu removed his bracelet, the turtle miraculous, and turned back to his civilian self, then handed the jewelry to her. His kwami, Wayzz, floated next to them awaiting instruction.
“If you could transform with my miraculous to finish the protection spell, I’d very much appreciate it. I’ll show you what to do when you’re ready.”
The young woman gaped at him, having never transformed into any hero other than Ladybug before.
“Oh! R-really?? S-sure! No problem...” She took the bracelet hesitantly, studying it like she’d never seen it before, then excused herself to the ensuite for privacy.
In the bathroom, Ladybug detransformed and removed her earrings, handing them to Tikki for safekeeping. She put on the emerald stone bracelet, staring at it as if it might try to crawl away from her if she wasn’t careful enough.
She squeezed her eyes shut in preparation. “Wayzz, shell on.”
Jade green light shone around the bathroom, and Marinette felt the magic of the turtle miraculous engulf her form. When it passed, she gulped and opened her eyes, lifting them to the mirror to catch a glimpse of her newly transformed self.
“Whoa.”
Tumblr media
The heroine stared at her reflection across the way. She ran her fingers over the various bits of fabric and armor, taking the time to appreciate the feel and texture. Somehow, she felt quite powerful. Tough. Solid. Almost like a sentient brick wall.
“Wow, Marinette! You look incredible!” Tikki whispered to her.
“Aww, thank you Tikki,” she replied. “It feels so different, but it’s also really cool.”
Sparing one last glance into the mirror, she finally emerged from the bathroom. Fu was seated at the desk chair across the room, taking a short breather. Chat was speaking to him in hushed tones, but turned around when he heard her re-enter the bedroom.
His jaw dropped and he gasped.
“Oh my God, you’re adorable!” Chat blurted out. He caught himself and turned tomato red, then stuttered, “Umm! S-sorry, I––”
Ladybug (Lady...turtle??) giggled, stepping forward to stand beside him once again. “Thanks,” she replied shyly, reaching up to tuck some hair behind her ear as she usually did when she was nervous, but her hand bumped into her suit’s hood instead. Not quite sure what to do with her hands, she folded them in front of her as she awaited further instruction.
Tikki flew in front of Master Fu, bowing her head in greeting. “It’s good to see you again, Master!”
“Likewise. I hope you are doing well,” he greeted back.
Tikki flew over to Chat Noir, to say hello to him as well. “Hello, Chat Noir! It’s nice to formally meet you,” she chirped happily.
Chat beamed and answered, “Tikki, right? It’s great to finally meet you too! I must admit, you look a little different than I thought you would.”
Tikki giggled. “Did you think I’d be more insect-like? Maybe with six legs and an exoskeleton?”
Chat shrugged timidly. “Well, I mean… Maybe…?” ‘Ladybug’ and Tikki looked at each other and snickered at his reply.
Fu smiled at their interactions fondly, recalling times spent with loved ones, allies no longer here. With a small grunt, he stood up to continue the protection ritual.
“This way, Ladybug. Chat Noir and Tikki, please stand over there; we’ll need a bit of space for this. You might feel a bit tired once this is finished, so be sure to get plenty of rest tonight,” he instructed.
Tikki perched on Chat’s shoulder as he moved towards the edge of the room. They spoke in hushed voices as Fu instructed Ladybug and had her repeat phrases from his notes.
While they waited, Chat turned to Tikki and whispered, “By the way, I wanted to thank you... for helping Ladybug and keeping safe all these years. She means a lot to me.”
If kwamis could blush, Chat was sure that’s what Tikki’s face showed at the moment. “It’s been a pleasure to be her kwami. She’s the best! I’m glad you’ve gotten to know her and see what a sweet person she is.”
Chat smiled, cheeks dusted pink. “I am too.”
------
Many minutes passed, and Ladybug and Fu finished casting the protection ward. Chat helped Fu gather his things as Ladybug excused herself to transform back to her regular hero self.
As she re-emerged from the bathroom, Chat handed her a glass of water and invited her to sit on the bed so she could catch her breath and gather back some of her energy. “Welcome back, Lily-bug,” he greeted her with a wink. Ladybug beamed at him, accepting the water and taking a seat next to him.
Fu stood beside them, having finished gathering his belongings in a satchel. As he gave Ladybug time to rest, he asked, “Do either of you have any questions about the protection ritual, or about anything else?”
Ladybug replied, “I actually do have some questions, sir.”
Fu nodded.
“Master... why did Hawkmoth attempt to akumatize Chat Noir last night? If he’s tried it before, why did he not succeed during other nights?” Ladybug’s questions came faster once she got started. “Since he tried to akumatized Chat, does that mean he knows where he lives now? Is Chat even safe here anymore? What about the Dupains? Are they gonna be okay? How much does Hawkmoth know?”
Chat looked at Fu expectantly, realizing that he, too, had those same questions.
Fu replied, “The owner of the butterfly miraculous sends out his butterflies in search of a specific strong emotion, but is not aware of their location until after the host accepts it. He is able to learn some vague details about why they are feeling that certain emotion. My guess is that he was able to locate him while he was having a nightmare. So, no. He does not know that Chat Noir lives here. His powers have limitations, just like you do with yours. He is more powerful since he is older and more experienced, but even he can’t overextend the capabilities of his miraculous.”
He paused, stroking his beard, and contemplated. Then he asked, “Did something happen last night to make your emotions different from what they normally are?”
Ladybug and Chat Noir looked at each other, blushing furiously, stammering as they attempted to answer without divulging too much unnecessary information.
Fu raised an eyebrow, then chuckled knowingly, raising his hands to stop them. “It’s okay, I don’t need to know the details.”
“Umm! I-it’s not what you think!”
“M-master, don’t misunderstand–”
“Y-you see–”
“What happened was…”
“My guess is–” Fu interrupted, “–That Hawkmoth sensed your great joy last night, and became enraged. He couldn’t stand the thought of you being happy because it would mean that he is in the wrong, and his pride won’t allow him to accept that.”
Chat and Ladybug fell silent, looking downcast, as the explanation both made sense yet was immensely disheartening.
“There’s something else, Master,” Ladybug spoke again. “Something happened at school today. Akumas, but they vanished without a trace. I mentioned it to you earlier today over the phone. Have you ever heard of such a thing?”
“Ah, yes. And all that remained was two white feathers?” Fu asked.
“That’s right. Could the akumas still be out there because they haven’t been purified?”
Fu shook his head. “Allow me to explain. Firstly, as Ladybug already knows, two of the miraculouses in my box went missing when the temple of the guardians was destroyed: the butterfly and the peacock. One of them fell into Hawkmoth’s hands sometime within the last few years. But after hearing about what happened at the school today, we can now confirm that Hawkmoth is currently in possession of not just one, but of both of them. Either that, or he has someone else working under him.”
“The Peacock… of course!” Ladybug gasped, voice filled with dread.
Chat looked at her, then back at Fu, waiting for him to elaborate.
“The Guardian’s Grimoire calls them ‘sentimonsters’, mystical beings created out of thin air using the peacock miraculous, which harnesses the power of emotions. They can be created and destroyed whenever the wielder desires. Usually they are simple creatures, designed to be helpers or perform smaller tasks. However, they can also be more sophisticated, even indistinguishable from other humans, although an enormous amount of energy is required to create these complex sentimonsters. One can even ‘borrow’ the appearance of an already existing person. In this case, Hawkmoth chose not to give the sentimonsters the ability to speak, so they couldn’t divulge their secrets, in the event that they were caught.”
Ladybug shuddered. “What the hell?! That is so creepy.”
“Indeed.” Fu looked over at Chat, who had remained pensive throughout this exchange. “Any thoughts, Chat Noir?”
Chat looked up at him, trying to figure out how to phrase what he wanted to say. “I… I think I remember seeing the peacock miraculous in my father’s safe once. I only caught a glimpse of it; I just thought it was some of my mom’s jewelry he kept as a memento. I had no idea it was a miraculous. Otherwise, I would’ve had Plagg help me break into the safe and taken it with me when I ran away from home. There are so many things my father never told me… I’m sorry I don’t know more.”
Ladybug reached out to hold his hand, giving it a small squeeze, which he returned.
“You’ve done more than you know, believe me,” Fu replied as he unconsciously squeezed his satchel, which contained the electronic tablet where his copy of the Grimoire was stored.
He stuck his hand in his pocket and stepped forward, handing Chat Noir a card with his cell phone number.
“Call me if you have any questions, either of you. Even if it’s the middle of the night. Wayzz will make sure I hear my phone if it rings; he’s a much lighter sleeper than I am.”
“Thank you, Master Fu,” replied Chat, smiling. “And thank you too, Wayzz.”
“Thanks, Wayzz. Thank you, Master.” said Ladybug.
“Also, I must remind you once again that your identities must remain a secret until things settle down. There are negative effects that could happen if you are revealed too soon, and I’m not sure what they could be; but it’s best not to find out.”
Ladybug frowned. “But when will that be, Master? It would be so much easier to be able to communicate without having to transform.”
Fu shrugged helplessly. “I’m afraid I don’t have an answer for that. We must allow things to continue to develop on their own. I'm sure we’ll know when the time is right.”
Ladybug let out a displeased sigh. Chat nodded, glancing away with a worried look in his eyes. Despite Ladybug’s eagerness (and despite his own curiosity), waiting suited him just fine for now.
After saying their goodbyes, Fu left the pair behind and let himself out with a final wave. The two heroes remained in the bedroom, contemplating what had been discussed.
After sitting in silence for a few moments, unsure of what to say next, a lightbulb seemed to light up inside Ladybug’s brain, and she began typing away into her yo-yo communicator. Chat watched curiously, wondering what she was up to.
Moments later, she hopped out of the bed to jot something down onto a sticky note from Chat’s desk, then walked back.
“Just because we can’t tell each other who we are doesn’t mean we shouldn’t be able to contact each other when we’re not transformed. Kwamis aren’t pagers, after all.”
“Pagers? What decade is this, anyway?” Chat razzed.
“Hush, you,” she mock scolded him, suppressing a smile. “ Anyway! Here’s my brand new, Chat Noir-exclusive email address,” she said, handing him the note with a wink.
Chat’s eyes lit up. “Wait, really??” He unfolded the paper as if it was a Christmas present, excited to read the contents. His eyes widened and he burst out laughing.
“ ‘[email protected]’ ?!”
“What, you don't think I’m great?” she teased, striking an exaggerated, Chat Noir-style pose.
Chat’s snickering only intensified and he nodded. “Oh, for sure! The greatest!” he agreed.
Ladybug smirked. “I made it just now,” she explained. “So you’re the only one who knows about it. We may not be able to hang out in person yet, but I’d still like to talk to you during the day. Plus, it’ll come in handy for emergencies.”
“Buginette you’re a genius!”
Ladybug giggled, feeling her face warm up despite herself. “M-maybe we can message each other when you have some free time? I mean… now that you don’t have to worry about getting akumatized in your own room anymore. Your bedroom’s pretty much the safest place in Paris now, thanks to Master Fu.”
“And thanks to you, as well, my dear ‘Lily-bug’,” Chat reached up to take her hand, gently pulling her down to sit next to him. “I feel much better already. And knowing I can talk to you anytime makes me feel even safer.”
She scooted closer, setting her head down on his shoulder. “Y-you know… you make me feel safe too, Kitty.”
Chat’s insides twisted into pleasant little knots, suddenly feeling rather warm. “Really?”
He felt her smile as her hand squeezed his arm, her other one sneaking across their laps to wrap her fingers around his own. “Yeah. I know we’ve only been allies for a short time, but I’ve already lost count of all the times you’ve saved me or sacrificed yourself to help others. Our partnership grows stronger every day, and I think Hawkmoth knows it. He knows we’re stronger together. And it’s only a matter of time until we can be together without these masks too, I just know it.”
He turned towards her, putting his fingers under her chin and lifting her head to have her look up at him. Their eyes met, her pupils dilating as they focused on his own, and he could see a bright blush blooming on her cheeks.
“Me too,” he whispered, as he brought their lips together.
She blissfully melted into him, letting out a small noise of contentment. She deepened the kiss, reaching behind his head to caress his hair with her slender fingers. Their kisses and breaths mingled together and they lost track of everything else around them.
A little while later, they faintly heard the grandfather clock striking the hour in the living room, then some noises as the Dupains shuffled upstairs from the bakery to get ready for bed.
Ladybug pulled back and they separated, his lips still tingling from her touch.
“I… I should probably get going soon,” she lamented with a small shrug. “It’s starting to get late.”
“Would you like me to walk you home? Or rather, to somewhere around your neighborhood?”
She shook her head. “That’s not necessary. Besides, I’m closer than you might think,” she added a bit cryptically.
“I wish you could stay,” he said softly, reaching up to tuck some hair behind her ear. He gave her nose a tiny smooch. “Just a teeeeensy bit more?” he begged, giving her the best kitten eyes he could muster.
Ladybug giggled shyly, cheeks still dusted with pink. She gave his own nose a peck, her lips soft and inviting. “Well… I guess I could stay just a little bit longer,” she said with a smirk.
“Purr- fect,” he said, capturing her lips once again.

Note:
Many of the events in the “Volpina” and “Collector” episodes happened in this AU, albeit heavily modified to suit the story. Adrien found the grimoire in his father’s safe, took it out to study it, and Lila stole it. Since Adrien didn’t act impressed about Lila knowing Ladybug, she didn’t magnify the lie and claim to be Ladybug’s best friend; therefore, Ladybug never showed up to call her out on her lie, and Lila was never akumatized.
However, Tikki did see the book in the dumpster and retrieved it, and Marinette showed it to Master Fu. After Gabriel discovered the book was missing and pulled Adrien out of school, Fu made a copy so that Marinette could return it to Gabriel, and Adrien was allowed to attend school again. Currently, Adrien has no idea that this is how Fu acquired his grimoire; he merely assumes that Fu has always had his own copy.
Of course, Marinette began to suspect that Gabriel might be Hawkmoth because he owned the grimoire. Gabriel akumatized himself into the Collector in order to avoid suspicion, and with Chat’s help, almost succeeded in obtaining the ladybug miraculous. Ultimately, Ladybug outsmarted him, got him to accidentally “collect” Chat, and succeeded in purifying his akuma. But by then, Gabriel had “proven” he was an innocent civilian and Ladybug dismissed his potential involvement as Hawkmoth.
----
P.S.  Another note: Certain things that are similar but not identical to canon have been in my outline since the beginning, so I apologize if they're a little confusing (such as the protection talismans being similar to Ladybug's akuma victims' lucky charms or the destruction/disappearance of the Guardian Temple)

Who the fuck put the Peeps in the microwave?: Lucifer. And no, it's not because he actually likes them or is curious about what would happen; he's seen plenty of Youtube videos enough to know exactly what happens. No . . . It's far more malicious . . . Generally speaking, you don't like the constant comparison of cats to the devil. But after getting to actually meet The Devil, you think that those believers might be on to something. Lucifer's whorey ways bleeds into his need for attention like red bleeds into white in the wash, and he's completely shameless about it. For example, if he feels like you may be focusing too much on work or, gasp, other people besides him, you run the risk of encountering a very . . . mischievous Luci. Not that he's not already a prankster, but he somehow becomes a bit more childish. Catlike in some respects. He puts your mugs up higher than what you can normally reach without having to climb on the countertop. He joins you at your kitchen table while you're reading over files for work and puts on his most angelic face, insisting he just wants to keep you company and will be as quiet as vermin in Dear Old Dad's house . . . then proceed to obnoxiously click a pen while pretending to solve a word problem, or eat cheese puffs obnoxiously loud. And then . . . the Peeps: The absolute prettyboy bastard used your microwave as a casualty of war, plopping the unplated, mutant-colored marshmallows directly on the glass and letting them go. To be fair, it technically didn't ruin anything. But at least he had your attention now -- because after fussing at him for making a mess, you were currently supervising him scrubbing not only the effected areas of the glass dish, but the rest of the microwave as well. Unfortunately, you can't say a lesson was really learned because now Luci knows that if he wants to get a rise out of you, what he needs is a bunch of candies from the bargain bin.
Who forgot to put the cat out before sex?: It's not that either of you forgot the cat was there -- it was that Lucifer wanted the bloody animal to give the both of you some privacy. And because Lucifer forgot the cat was there. He was simply too busy embracing you in a liplock and laying you down on the couch to notice the glaring eyes of the cat you had rescued from the shelter. Thankfully, you two didn't get very far before the lovingly-named Lucipurr released a meow, indicating that he had become flesh and bone in the few hours it had been since you'd last fed him. Suffice to say, after a startled Lucifer flung himself off of you and onto the floor, nearly breaking his ass on the coffee table (and the laughing fit that had induced on your end), the mood was killed. For the next fifteen minutes, that is. The next time he tried anything, Lucifer made sure that his efforts would be continued in the bedroom (but not before he did a complete check of every nook and cranny in there to make sure the furry bastard wasn't trying anything).
Who posts Vines/TikToks of the other doing embarrassing shit?: Lucifer absolutely lacks boundaries. The moment he discovered smartphones, social media, and all their potential, he was all in and recording as many videos of friends and coworkers as he could in as many awkward or unideal situations as they came. You felt bad for Dan being his constant target, but you were somewhat sure that Dan felt bad for you in a way: After all, you were dating the freaking guy and yet Lucifer had few qualms about posting a video of you, drunkenly singing karaoke in what was supposed to be a private room? Harsh.
Who breaks the most phones?: Lucifer does. He's not necessarily careless, but his part-time occupation does lead him to circumstances that tend to put his phone in danger. You, Chloe, Dan, literally everyone has told him to just leave his phone in the car if he's going to get it broken that often while on the job, but the dumbass never learns. Not that he really seems to care all that much: With his wealth, he can always buy a new one. Though, the only times he gets frustrated is when photos or videos don't quite make it to the transfer and things get lost along the way. Funny photos, suggestive videos, photos and videos of you . . . Photos and videos of you being funny or suggestive . . . Downright pornographic videos he had recorded of you -- Though don't worry: He's sure you'll be more than happy to help recreate the latter. He'd gladly help you . . .
Who dies first?: It should go without saying. It really should. But that doesn't make it hurt any less. Lucifer was always one to get caught up in his indulgences, after all: Somewhere along the way, he must've gotten too swept up in the thrill, the feeling of adoration. He tells himself this but it's really just denial. Closer to the truth is that it all really was just denial: He denied the idea that you would ever leave him, that you would ever die. Luci was never good with his own thoughts and feelings, but the way you made him feel was nearly enough to convince him that, in some way, you would just plain live forever. But of course, this was not the case: It didn't matter that you were fantastical enough to love and be loved by the Devil; you were still very much a human. Very much mortal. So susceptible to things like time and illness and injury. Lucifer was the King of Indulgences. It was extremely rare for him to experience regret. But when your time inevitably ran out, remorse filled him like smoke filled his lungs with every cigarette he ran through from the moment your funeral arrangements were decided. He could never regret knowing you, as much as part of him thought doing so would spare him this pain. He tried to think of how much better he might've been had he never met you, and it always felt like he was stuck in his own personal Hell Loop with everything going wrong over and over no matter how hard he tried to change it. He regretted that for as much time as he lived up with you, he felt like he didn't use nearly enough of that time to just . . . enjoy you. You in your mortality, your fleeting beauty and love that would nonetheless haunt him for however long he might go on for. So maybe . . . for eternity? This didn't feel like his own personal Hell Loop: This was his own personal Hell Loop. And until he learned to forgive himself, it would never end. So he'd be stuck here for maybe . . . eternity.
Which one I could see as being lactose intolerant: Neither. Unless they get brought down to mortal enough, Celestials generally don't suffer ailments, let alone from things like food allergies.
Who thinks they can do something really well even though they can't?: Lucifer . . . It's not that he's not smart. But by Dad, he is lacking in so much self-awareness that it can be maddening. He thinks he's pretty good at following Dr. Linda's advice (and, to an extent, he's progressing). But the fact of the matter is, he's incredibly troubling at best. Not nearly as bad as some patients, mind you, but when Linda admitted to you that one or two sessions of Lucifer completely misinterpreting her advice nearly drove her to consider adding a secret bar into her desk, you believed her and didn't blame her for one bit.
Who is more likely to get kicked out of bed?: Lucifer is a changed devil. But it's a very slow change. You're more than happy to understand and accept this, but that doesn't mean you have to let him and his issues walk all over you. Sometimes, the big dummy just says or does things without thinking -- or because he thought too hard and thought this was the best decision to avoid further strife. And you try to be patient with him about these tendencies, you really do. But that doesn’t erase your ability to be upset by these habits, or your right to be. And no amount of him buttering you up is going to be acceptable, even when he comes by your place, armed with a dish he so thoughtfully prepared for you. Nope, he can literally go to Hell with that (really, you’re sure the demons there would appreciate a nice beef wellington); you just need some space. Ironically, this may create a cycle wherein his need to make you happy again and have your attention on him drives him to constantly hover around you and attempt to win you over, which in turn just further frustrates you. It’ll likely keep going until you either snap or a loved one pulls Luci to the side and gives him a heads up that maybe he should respect your boundaries. After all, intention isn’t the problem here: It’s the actions taken. And as much as it hurts him knowing that he accidentally hurt you, he has to respect your need for time to cool off. He forces himself to go back to his place and tries to think less about how he feels and more about how you might feel, and try to work out ways to avoid similar incidents in the future. And even though the conclusions he comes to may not be perfect, you at least respect the effort -- particularly when he next sees you, no longer armed with snacks from your favorite bakery or bouquet-carrying teddy bears. Instead, all he has is an apology. It’s sheepish, and it feels foreign to someone who rarely experiences shame or regret, but you know his whole heart is in it even if he himself doesn’t understand entirely why that is. Which is good because that’s just part one of the process; part two involves him warming up that spot in your bed that’s reserved for him!
Who uses the computer the most?: You, absolutely. Lucifer's adorably but altogether completely crap when it comes to technology. Besides, he can easily find other things with which to amuse himself, and doing the paperwork is for other people anyway.
Thank you sooooo much for participating again!!! It really means a lot!!! ❤️ ❤️ ❤️

wine ( diluc ragnvindr )
synopsis: if there was ever a fate worse than death, you were sure it would be your own—to watch the man you’ve loved and longed for from afar slowly fall in love with someone else.  pairing: diluc ragnvindr x gn!reader  word count: 0.9k  warnings: cw for alcohol consumption  inspired by: “forever, forgotten” by @favoniuscodex and wine by clara benin
a/n: if you’re reading this, hello and thank you for reading my first-ever genshin impact imagine :) this was inspired by none other than the lovely favoniuscodex and their absolutely heartwrenching “forever, forgotten” scenarios, along with the song “wine” by clara benin—both of which i have linked above. once again, thank you so much, and i hope you enjoy reading :)
edit: wine now has a sequel which you can read here !
you don’t think you’ve ever seen his eyes twinkle this brightly in years.
and, even better—well, more like worse, but you weren’t about to let yourself admit that—was the way you could see the beginnings of a smile forming on his face, a smile that seemed to be verging on a little too wide to only be polite as he talked to her.
you thought diluc would have treated her like the rest of her fellow diplomats than jean had coerced him into receiving as guests: respectful, polite, with not a single sliver of disinterest or exasperation to be seen at having been roped into what clearly should’ve been the ordo favonius’s business—yet here he was, looking rather invested in whatever she’s been running her mouth off about for the past hour or so ever since the banquet the knights had held in honor of her delegation’s arrival to mondstadt had started.
you quickly quell the rising ache in your chest with a burning gulp of wine.
you hated it. that much you allowed yourself to admit. elaborating on what “it” exactly meant, though, was where you drew the line; because admitting meant losing, and losing meant accepting—like having to accept the fact that you hated the sight of her next to diluc.
“ah, fuck,” you utter under your breath. you’ve already said too much. you might as well just fess up to the rest while you’re at it. you take another scorching gulp of wine, feeling the bittersweet buzz grow more bitter than sweet as you watch diluc’s smile grow uncharacteristically wider as he continues conversing with her.
you hated the sight of her with him. you hated the way you clearly saw her fall in love with him at first sight as she sat with her fellow diplomats while diluc and jean welcomed her delegation to the city. you hated the way she clung to him, practically hanging onto his arm at each, every, and any opportunity she could. you hated the way she had no shame in flirting with him, growing ever bolder and pushier with her advances even as diluc graciously dodged each and every one of them with a respectful impartiality.
most of all, though—what you hated the most was the fact that her efforts seemed to actually be working.
from being courteous if not a little distant, you could see and practically feel diluc grow closer to her, both in proximity and in bond. you’d practically made the cat’s tail your watering hole these last couple of weeks solely because you couldn’t stand the sight her sitting at what was your usual spot, doing your usual activity of chatting with him for hours on end in between drinks and his bartending.
if you were both jealous and dumb enough you’d most definitely have accused her of attempting to usurp you—and while you were indeed jealous (a sour grin curls at your lips at your admission), you at least had half a mind to know she wasn’t doing anything of the sort at all; simply because you knew you weren’t even close to what she was now becoming to diluc.
because unlike her, you’ve never made his eyes twinkle. you’ve never made him smile as warm as the way he does at her now. you’ve never made him chuckle so easily like her while you’ve lost count of how many times you’ve tried and failed to even make him crack the smallest grin.
and, you bitterly conceded with one last gulp of your wine, you were sure he’d never think of you as anything else other than a friend, seeing as you know it’s been the way he’s always thought of you for years.
try as you might, you were just far too late to the game. when you’d first realized you’d fallen for diluc, you insisted on keeping things slow and steady, to not rush things and simply confess your feelings to him when you thought the right time would come… but it never came—or, at least, every time it came you’d always tell yourself the exact opposite and to do it at another time. in your determination not to lose him, to not let the man you’ve loved for as long as you can remember slip away from your grasp within mere moments of you uttering the three words you were paranoid would scare him away, you ended up losing him anyway, just as you feared.
and now, here you were, reaping the consequences of your actions (or lack thereof, to be more precise), watching yourself losing him to someone else right before your very eyes.
your lips twitch up into another sour, sour grin.
as if you ever had a chance to win, anyway.
you turn away from the scene the moment you begin to feel the wine catch up to you. you debate on turning around and taking a look at the relationship that’s been blossoming before your eyes this entire time—but at the last minute, you decide against it. you’ve hurt yourself enough thus far. to take one last look would be nothing short of a killing blow.
with short, quick steps that swiftly navigate through the crowd of diplomats and knights, you make your way towards the exit, but stop to look over at kaeya, standing and sipping away at his drink of choice.
“kaeya.”
kaeya turns towards you at the sound of your voice, a sly smirk already creeping up on his face as he does. “mm? yes?”
“do you mind doing me a favor?”
“why, sure. what is it?”
“tell diluc good luck.”
kaeya’s sly smirk instantly morphs into a look of confusion. “good luck? whatever for?”
you offer him a smile, a wink, and nothing more before you leave.

Alfie Solomons X Reader
Drabble
“You ever been?”
Her voice was softer than he’d expect, especially for someone who had been sulking for the past hour or so. She had successfully managed to sneak out of the party right before some old ladies started bugging her about her education and independence and she’d been standing outside for the past fifteen minutes.
It was stupid to talk to him.
She knew that, too well almost as she blew the smoke out of her painted lips. She had some wine in her system, to be fair to herself but that didn’t cloud her judgement like the event she was in had. There were too many faces, too many giggles and smiles thrown her way that she wasn’t willing to return. And she didn’t blame herself for it.
It was her hard-earned title after all.
All of the older ladies knew she wouldn’t settle, or be with a guy in a proper sense anyway. There were girls in the building she was leaning on who’d get married easily, they’d dazzle the men with their smiles and their proper manners. They, unlike her, listened to their mothers and acted proper.
“What?”
His voice wasn’t as she was expecting. It didn’t startle her, not per se and she’d seen him enough times from afar to get used to the bulky form. She wasn’t sure what he was doing in a small, conservative event but was quickly reminded of the ties he had with the jewish community.
Wasn’t he their god on earth?
The girl throwing the party was someone she had to know, someone she could later count on and there weren’t many people she wanted to be around to begin with. Her dress flew around her ankles, a darker shade of green than the girls had. He thought she looked like a child but the cigarette on her hand was enough to fool him to think that her delicate features were older than they actually were.
He had heard things.
In smaller communities, things got around quicker than some would like. Alfie knew she wasn’t jewish, it was obvious from the everything about her but he knew she was close to the community. Close enough to get invited to one of the very small events the younger ones were hosting.
He still didn’t know why he was there.
Sure, one of his oldest mates had invited him and he had made plans to appear but the older ladies got ahold of him and the next thing he knew, it had already been an hour of him roaming around the building. He wasn’t a fan of this kind of celebration to say the least, which was why he was standing on the outside of the building with her.
“In love.” she spoke, mocking the words that came out of her mouth.
Had he?
Maybe sometime before the war, he had loved a girl in some foolish hope he had found his very young self in. Not anymore, he thought. He didn’t see it possible for himself. He was corrupt, wasn’t he? The community accepted him with all the baggage he came with but he was more than sure none of the men would hand their daughter into his hands, willingly.
That’s why brothels existed.
Alfie looked at her then, a very young face in the shadows as her plump lives moved with the cigarette. She watched the smoke evaporate into the air and caught his eyes, with an intensity Alfie was sure only appeared in wild cat’s eyes but he didn’t budge. He wasn’t the type to do that.
Had she?
“Nah.” he said, watching her further and she let him. There was a weight to her Alfie didn’t see fit, she was too young to have that kind of heaviness to her.
He then wondered if she saw the war, sure she had but what she had been through. She probably lost someone, Alfie said to himself but then so had everyone. He knew not everyone took it the same as she looked into his eyes under the moonlight, no longer holding the small stick between her slim fingers.
“Good for you.” she said, a smile in her words. He had caught it, the joy, and didn’t know what to do with it or where to put it. Not quite.
She observed him for a while.
He seemed out of place, out of time perhaps and she pretended the blood she saw on his shoes was normal. It didn’t stand out anyway, only when she realized who he was and what he was doing in a party full of people she was sure he didn’t know because she didn’t know them either.
They were similar, she concluded.
She licked her lips one more before she got ready to go inside again, or so Alfie thought before she drew another cigarette from the box and lit it up. She held eye contact the entire time, in a way that told Alfie some things he didn’t need answered. His voice filled the entire street when he spoke, like his presence but this wild cat looking girl didn’t seem to care about who he was or about the blood on his shoes.
“Ain’t ya’ supposed to be fuckin’ inside, lass?” his words came out, more of a statement more than anything as he looked at her. She smiled this time, really smiled before speaking. He was amusing to say the least and the wine in her system enhanced that.
“I could ask you the same thing, Mister.” she spoke, mocking him almost but he couldn’t care less. The day had been long and he wanted to find his way home, even though he realized that he enjoyed her company more than the people inside the building combined.
“Solomons, lass. The name’s Solomons.” he said, giving her the doubt this time and speaking of his last name. She nodded, taking a drag from her cigarette before staring at her feet and wet shoes. She didn’t seem bothered.
“Sure, it is.” she nodded as she spoke, looking at the sky not too long after that. He found that her face was older than he’d initially thought but she was still young, too young to be there smoking at that hour.
Half an hour more, she said to herself and then he’d pick her up. She’d be out of there soon.
And while she waited, she observed the peculiar man.
“Ya’ don’t like the inside then?” he spoke, more of a statement once again and she looked up to meet his blue eyes. He looked older than he was, she was sure of it.
She shook her head at first and then hugged her coat tighter before she spoke. “Too many faces.”
Alfie shook his head at the response. What did this young little thing know about life? Well, maybe she knew enough not to be interested in it, he had gone to war and seen terrible things around the same age as he suspected she was.
And she was right.
Alfie didn’t have a problem with people per se, seeing as they didn’t even want to look at his face at times because of the fear he exuded. He didn’t mind, he concluded, if a young girl like her came to speak to her, he didn’t mind being feared at all. She looked at his face then and realized he wasn’t that unpleasant to look at, not at all if she was completely honest with herself.
With her tongue dancing over her lips, he watched her watch him. This was a game, neither of them were occupied and she was certainly a bit drunk for it but it didn’t matter at the end of the day because he had been the one to lean forward, invading her space and she did nothing to stop him.
Half an hour, that’s all it was.
She let him when he leaned forward, didn’t kick him in the shin or scream and certainly not when he gently cradled her skull in his large hands. She was sure this was a dream of some kind, the good ones that would keep her awake for longer than she’d want but she wanted to feel him.
And she soon realized that it wasn’t a dream after all.
When his lips met hers.
He wasn’t as needy as the other lads, she made that conclusion right away but waited as he planted his lips on her once more. The kiss was gentle, like a breeze in the spring and it made her wonder what kind of a person he really was. His hands were gentle with her, kind almost and so was his tongue as it danced with hers. She didn’t care for the shout that came from the inside, just the way his velvet lips felt against his.
And then she broke the kiss.
There was a smile on her lips when she did, a drunken triumph but he realized she wasn’t drunk, she was just treading like it around him. She chuckled when breaking the kiss, liking how the strange turn of events took her there. She had barely kissed anyone before, let alone kiss someone the way he had kissed her and it made her feel strange knowing her first real kiss had been outside her friend’s party, with a man no one wanted to speak to because he killed people for a living.
She looked into his eyes then, searching for the monster everyone told her was there in him but only saw a smug set of blue orbs that had just kissed her. Her smile faded soon after, realizing she had about ten minutes left before he came to pick her up.
“If you do this often, you’ll never fall in love.” she spoke, snickering as she took everything to the beginning of the conversation.
And to her surprise, he laughed with her.
Of course he didn’t do this often, this was the first time he’d kissed a strange young little thing outside of a party he didn’t want to be in. He had liked kissing her, would continue if she hadn’t broken the kiss but those were all a given and the real question was if Alfie would see her again.
Probably not, he thought. She hadn’t even given her a name.
“This ain’t common occurrence, lass, I fuckin’ assure you.” he said under his breath but she heard and nodded, not phased in the slightest as he looked down at her.
“Well, if it’s any consolation, your kiss wasn’t terrible so I’m sure you have a chance with the ladies.” she spoke, the words rolling off her tongue like second nature and he watched her, almost bewildered.
Alfie didn’t just have normal conversations, let alone conversations like this and especially with a woman her age.
But that didn’t seem to bother her.
“What’s your name, lass?” he spoke, a desperate attempt to learn her name so maybe he could find her again. He didn’t think he’d kiss her the way he had just now but he wanted to see her and that didn’t happen too often for him to just pass up the chance.
“Why do you ask?” she said, a smile on her pretty lips as he watched her.
Yeah, he really wanted to kiss her again.
She was smart, too. He’d give her that but the only thing he gave her at that moment was the huff of his chest as he looked down at her orbs. She was unusual, that was for sure but in a way that many wouldn’t appreciate which is why, he guessed, she was outside.
“Seein’ as we just fuckin’ kissed, yeah, I’d like to know the name of the fuckin’ lass I’ve been kissin’.” he spoke with a smile, like it was the most obvious thing and it made you chuckle as you looked up at him.
“But you kissed me, I didn’t ask for it so I don’t think it’s a fair exchange.” she spoke, poking at the bear which was something she should’ve never done. She knew that but did it anyway.
She took a step back and offered him a smile he didn’t return. He didn’t understand her, he realized and it bothered him that he didn’t. Alfie wasn’t good with people but he wanted to understand her, to know what had made her the way she was but she was walking away with a smile on her face that made him think that maybe it was too late.
“Lass..” he spoke, voice booming through the streets and made you turn around to see his face under the city lights.
“Yes?” she spoke, getting accustomed to what he was calling her since he didn’t know your name.
He was a fun one, she decided.
Before he could speak, she did. A smirk on her not-so-painted lips anymore as her soft voice filled the empty street. “Look, Mr. Solomons, I’m sure you’ll see me around if you were invited to this party..” her finger pointed to the inside of the building where the chatter and the drinks were.
“If you see me around, you have the permission to kiss me again.” she said, fidgety compared to how she’d been at the very beginning as he watched her leave.
He’d see her again, he knew but he wanted it to be soon.
It wasn’t like the burly gangster got to kiss pretty girls under the moonlight, and not girls like her.
And so he promised himself that he’d see her sooner than she’d anticipated.

A boyfriend sounds good, but…
Non idol! Jung Wooyoung x fem! Reader
3.1k words, Highly suggestive at best, making out, FLUFF, E2L vibes, College AU
Warnings: Mentions of STDs, making out. ( This is so self-indulgent it’s horrible lmao- also, not explicit at all.)
This piece of fiction does not reflect the actions of the real-life Jung Wooyoung. Not meant for minors.
Tumblr media
College was supposed to be late night parties and hurried submissions, overdosing on caffeine and woefully unedited essay compilations. College was supposed to be hellish hangovers and greasy weekend brunches in bed, helter-skelter running to part-time jobs and missing classes with snoozed alarms.
You got all of that, of course, but you also got one thing you didn’t ask for, in fact, wished beyond wishes that it wouldn’t happen but of course, your guardian angel was up to some mischief: You got yourself an archenemy.
Jung fucking Wooyoung.
It all started off small, of course; bumping into each other rather violently in the hallways on orientation day ended with your coffee on the floor. Minor detail- his phone had also dropped on the floor.
You apologized profusely- he seemed like an upperclassman with his leather jacket, slim but solid build, a head of double-toned hair and oh were those tattoos peeking out of his collar- no point in causing a ruckus on the first day. You even offered to pay for the damage.
And then he opened his mouth.
“Can’t you watch where you’re going?”
The sheer annoyance in his tone rubbed you the wrong way- obviously you had to respond, you weren’t the only one at fault-
“Sorry, but you weren’t watching where you were going either. So don’t tout the blame to me-”
“Oh, whatever, just keep your money. I can get it fixed myself.”
The audacity of this bi-
“Good for you then, because my offer is off the table now, pretty boy.”
A smirk curled up his lip- “You think I’m pretty?”
“About as pretty as a skunk, especially with that hair.”
You had to tamp down the urge to childishly stick your tongue out at his bemused, mildly annoyed expression before walking past him.
 Lamenting the loss of your morning coffee, you hurried your way to the orientation venue. At Least he was an upperclassman. Thankfully you wouldn’t have to deal with him-
“Did you see that hot guy in the leather jacket and that black-blonde hair ?”
Fuck’s sake.
“His name’s Jung Wooyoung and apparently all the upperclassmen already have an eye on him. He’s in our major so we really lucked out, hot guys-wise.”
Fuck’s sake.
Surely you could just avoid him and pretend he didn’t exist?
But no.
Jung fucking Wooyoung turned out to be the apple of the campus’ eye in a matter of 2 weeks. He was as new to the university as the rest of you and yet, managed to look more put together, cooler than the rest of you still struggling to figure out class numbers and professor names.
He was the upperclassmen darling- people drooled over him, wanted to befriend him, and invite him to all the big parties…
and fuck- even the teachers were already wrapped around his infuriating pinky finger. They allowed him to waltz into class 25 minutes late, smile his infuriating innocent smile and chill in the back row, scot fucking free.
A month in, he’d gotten into the Dance Club too-  cementing his legendary status in the university. It was unheard of, after all, for a freshman to get into the unattainable Dance Club in his first attempt.
You happened to visit one of the club’s performances one weekend and even you couldn’t ignore the sheer talent he radiated. It only infuriated you more to watch Wooyoung hog the stage’s spotlight with almost no effort- all perfect lines, sharp and clean movements…
It’s fine, you could still ignore his existence
But no.
Another thing about Jung Wooyoung- he found sick pleasure in annoying the living daylights out of you.
It was so juvenile, so high-school, so immature of him- sticking gum in your hair, snapping your bra strap, kicking the back of your chair, striking up nonsense debates with you in class…
And then he had the nerve to laugh in your face when you glared at him with hellfire in your eyes because you were too polite to lash out in front of a professor.
Of course, you exhibited no such restraint outside the classroom.
“You vs Woo” was a commonplace explanation for the commotions that blazed up in the campus courtyard every other day. You were like wolves, the way you snarled at each other, not hesitating to slash at each other with as many cutting words as you could find.
This went on for months, an entire semester marred by an enmity that seemed to stem from nothing- until one day, mister Jung Wooyoung really fucked up.
“WHERE THE FUCK ARE YOU? FACE ME, YOU COWARDLY WORM!” Your angry yelling and thudding on the door had Wooyoung’s roommates Yeosang and… Choi San? running to open the door to their shared dorm room.
You barged into Wooyoung’s room, unplugging the game he was playing. “What the fuck-”
“You dirty fucking bastard. You shameless shitstain of a fucking human being-”
Slap. Wooyoung reeled back. In all this time, you’d never actually hit out at him physically. It had always been words. Maybe this time he crossed a line?
“You told Changbin I had a fucking STD. THE GALL OF YOU-” You lashed out at him with every few words, pushing Wooyoung further back against the back wall of his room.
“How fucking dare you make assumptions about me like that. you lowlife scumbag.” You snarled in his face, now having him trapped between you and the wall.
You were smaller than him by quite a bit- it was almost amusing to see Wooyoung cowering in front of you, lowkey terrified of what you’d throw at him next.
“Okay okay, fuck, I’m sorry!” He burst out finally, cutting you right across your angry rant. “I didn’t mean it like that!! I swear, I didn’t even know you were the one he was talking about. And I only told him to be safe from STDs, not that anybody had one.”
“What makes you think I’ll believe you, Jung,” You screeched. “You’ve always been a dick in general to me. I wouldn’t put it past you to say something like that and lie to my face about it.”
You back away, almost disgusted at being so close to him, “Seriously, dude. Get fucked.” Flipping him off before leaving, you turn around to look at him still standing where you’d backed him up to, an evil glint in your eye.
“It will be so fucking unfortunate if somebody told the campus gossip blog you had erectile dysfunction and your hookups were all fake.”
\
Safe to say, Wooyoung never made digs at your sexual activity again.
Neither did he have much sexual activity of his own for a while. Not that there was much sexual activity in your case either.
Maybe it was that exact…starvation that led Wooyoung to behave the way he did.
What was juvenile teasing became more… flirtatious?
Oh gods, what the fucking fuck is going on-
Suddenly, it wasn’t gum in your hair, it was soft whispers against your ear, breath warm against your cheek
It wasn’t kicking the back of your chair, it was leaning in front of you to fistbump Lee Felix on the other side of you until you could smell his intoxicating chocolate-honey-sweat scent.
He’d taken to taking his leather jacket off and sitting through classes (he still turned up late for) in a muscle t shirt that showed off his toned arms-
All of his movements now seemed to be designed to tease the crawling under your skin you hadn’t been able to quench recently-
Not that you were a serial hookup kinda person, but you’d been fairly sexually active until semester exams and Wooyoung’s rumors had brought around quite a dry spell for you.
It was like every action of his sparked something wildfire hot in your head, tension stringing your senses into overdrive- were you imagining it?
Wooyoung was having some troubles with said crawling under-skin himself.
Since when did you wear skinny jeans like that to class? Did you always have such a pretty neck, just waiting to get marked up? Did you always have that sway to your hips when you walked out of class?
The forced abstinence was doing bad things to him.
It did rather amuse him, however, when he could see your breath catch a little from his murmurings in your ear, or squirm in your seat when he spoke to Felix before the professor arrived. It was the little things, truly.
You still fought like a cat and dog though- there was no way the two of you would ever let on that your scope of noticing each other had gone beyond annoyance and rivalry a while ago.
//
“Fuck no. I’m not doing this fucking project with you. It’s worth half the fucking grade and you’re a numbskull when it comes to this subject.”
“Like I want to deal with you anymore than I have to, sweetheart. You’re pretentious enough in class as it is.”
Fate really loved playing the cliche card with you- of course you got paired up with Wooyoung for one of your semester projects.
No, it definitely wasn’t the teacher that saw you two glaring more at each other more than the whiteboard and decided to take matters into her own hands.
Of fucking course the teacher refused to allow switching of partners or individual grading- it had to be a team effort or you’d both fail the subject. As a team. Yippee-ki fucking yay.
So you two ended up in the library at 11 p.m, two nights before your first check point review, having procrastinated the fuck out of working together until the last possible minute.
Amidst cursing at each other and cups of ramen and iced americano, the two of you found yourself stuck with each other and attempting to build the basis of an acceptable report to present.
Surprisingly enough, Wooyoung wasn’t entirely a lost cause when it came to the subject. He actually made sizable contributions to the report. He even got you some coffee on his break, despite the jibes and taunts you threw at him about going soft- you were the type to hold a grudge.
You were both wandering down the shelves in the library, looking for more references when Wooyoung decided to open his big mouth again.
“You do realize that shitty rumor you put out didn’t really mess with my prospects, right?” Wooyoung was so full of shit. “If anything, I’d be worried about you, sweetheart.”
There it was again. Sweetheart. Another of those taunting things that just riled you up in all the wrong(right) ways. It was like he knew everything you would go weak for and then shamelessly exploited them all.
“Unlike you, Wooyoung, I don’t need people to stroke my ego…or anything else. I can get myself going just fine.”
“If you did know how to stroke anybody’s anything, sweetheart, you wouldn’t have trouble getting some.”
Ohhh, so he wants to play some games!!! Okay then-
You reached out to flick at his ponytail, ever-so slightly enamoured by how well he pulled off the double-toned look.
“Like you know anything about how to please in bed, babe.”
It was unfair how much that nickname falling from your lips affected Wooyoung. Some…not very appropriate thoughts had already taken root in his brain and you running your mouth was not helping at all.
“Good enough for them to beg, sweetheart.”
A soft crow of laughter escaped you as you turned to fully face him, the both of you standing between the Greek Architecture and Geography sections.
“You sure you weren’t the one doing the begging?”
“Oh, really now?”
You really should’ve thought through what was leaving your mouth
Because now you were wedged between the shelves and Wooyoung’s (unfairly) toned body, his arms caging you in with that signature shit-eating grin on his face as he leaned closer to you-
The tension was almost atrocious now, suffocating you when it had only previously nudged at you. You could feel it settle under your skin, in your veins, fingers itching to reach out and pull him closer
But you kept your hands braced against the shelves- you would not give him the satisfaction of making the first move yourself…right?
Fuck, you really wanted to though-
It had be the late hour leaving you with lesser inhibitions than normal or possibly the pent up horny in your system or maybe the questionable direction your conversation was headed in
There was no other plausible reason for your arch nemesis’ lips to look that inviting
It must’ve been the way your attention flitted from his eyes to his lips that gave you away, a momentary lapse of self-control before you looked away, off to some point behind his shoulders-
And he smirk only widens
“You know, nobody really visits this corner of the library.”
“Your point?”
Both your voices were whispers now, your bodies close enough to touch but not quite, Wooyoung’s face a few inches away from yours and holding your gaze
(He had honey flecks in those dark eyes, 7 on one side and 4 on the other, like gold leaf in coffee)
“We could easily find out who begs for who…”
He still hadn’t touched you yet, his hands placed on the shelf on either side of you- you could move out from the space if you so wished-
Despite the tension between the both of you, it seemed like… like he was waiting for you to make the first move, voice your consent, act on it
How considerate, you thought to yourself as you let your sight wander to either side, checking for people
Surprising you found Jung Wooyoung’s one possible redeeming quality like this, mind hazy and barely restraining yourself from kissing the living daylights out of him-
Oh well, fuck it
A soft sound left Wooyoung as you curled your hand around the back of his neck and pulled his face to yours, lips meeting in a soft, hesitant kiss
How dare he be a good kisser too?
One hand reached up to cup your cheek and you instinctively tilted your head into the warmth of his palm as the kiss deepened
Unfair that he could take your breath away so effortlessly
There was nothing hesitant about the way Jung wooyoung kissed you back
Lips pressing more persistently against yours, teeth grazing your lower lip and pulling slightly before diving in again, hand now curled around the back of your neck
His other hand caressed your side and gripped your hips as he pressed you gently against the shelves, your arm slipping down to clutch at the front of his shirt as his body molded all too perfectly against yours
You could feel him everywhere
Everywhere
From the way his lips had begun to land messy kisses against your jaw and neck, the hand on your hip tightening and slipping under your shirt to clutch at soft skin, hips flush against yours
You couldn’t bring yourself to pull away from Wooyoung, your head spinning at the intoxicating feeling he brought with him
The sensation of his mouth against your neck was almost euphoric, your head lolling back against the books and leaving you to pull your lower lip between your teeth, an almost futile feeling bid to keep silent, you’re still in public
Somehow your hands wound up in his hair, pulling the double-toned strands as his head dipped lower, a quiet groan from Wooyoung your only pointer that he liked it
So this is why he was so sure of himself, your mind temporarily blanking when Wooyoung’s teeth pulled against the sensitive skin, biting and sucking gently
A choked, uneven sound escaped your mouth when he pushed you harder against the shelves, hand reaching lower to squeeze your butt-
A smirk lit up his eyes as he straightened up to look at the line of red- blue blooming across your neck, then at you, cheeks warm and still biting your lip, looking resolutely away from his gaze
“Weren’t we supposed to be working on the project?”
This little buzzkill.
//
You didn’t work on the project that night
You spent it in Wooyoung’s bedroom, getting railed within an inch of your life.
Not without the lack of the both of you being absolutely unable to keep your hands off each other on the way there
Between the library and his dorm, you pulled or got pulled into shady alleys and corners for ‘another taste’
“Never again.” You warned him when he dropped you off at your dorm, you looking windswept from the wind of course and his hoodie up because of the cold not because his neck was more purple than tan-
Lies.
Your daytime dynamic remained the same
But now with added benefits-
He got to corner you after class, feel you up until you were gasping his name and then leave you hanging
You got to make brazen moves under the table in the library whenever he got too snarky for his own good
He could ask nicely, you learnt. Broken groans and choked-up sounds would escape him when you ran your nails over his skin, soft and sharp and wanting and unyielding as you kissed your way down his body
Down his neck, over his chest, the hard planes of his stomach
He would plead for more when you sucked him off, bucking his hips closer to you everytime you slowed down or stopped
Find him at the right time, though and he could just as easily return the favour
He would tease you relentlessly, hands ghosting everywhere dangerous and then pulling away just to watch you squirm and make grabby hands at him, a frown marring your kiss- swollen lips
Leave conspicuous marks too high up on your neck for you to cover, dark enough for a day or two that even makeup left shadows
Spending a long, long time between your legs only to get up and start dressing, claiming to be late for class
Quickies were your religion at this point
Janitors closets locked and hand covering your mouth to muffle your moans before a dance competition, empty bedrooms in frat parties with one of you getting pushed onto the bed
It was an infernal coupon from hell : Find one archrival, get a fuck buddy free of cost!
Of course, there were side effects
“Did you just walk out of that empty classroom with Jung Wooyoung? After class hours?” “We were studying for the midterms!!”
“Uh.. Wooyoung, who was that leaving the dorm building? at 1 in the morning?” “uh yEAH WE WERE DOING THE PROJECT YEAH.”
Yeah, a boyfriend sounds nice but an archenemy you can make out with in secret sounds ravishingly pleasing-
When the boy in question is a certain young man with double toned hair with a penchant for leather jackets and out-of-line snark, you couldn’t agree more.
Tumblr media
Yes, this is a revamp and repost from my main account xD. Like I said, this was self indulgence to the peak 😩 I'm a tad whipped for snarky boy Jung Wooyoung 😀
Do lemme know what you think ^_^. xoxo, A💕

☠️ words: 1.8k [7 minutes, 15 seconds].

☠️ summary: since you were always his favorite customer, kirishima always knew how to treat you right.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“Well that’s no good, you’ve let some of my cum spill.” Kirishima frowns at the sight, looking between your spread legs and observing the said substance leaking from the aforementioned spot. “Have you been a bad kitten?” He asks with a small pout, his eyes giving you a look short of mock-disappointment. “Use your words.”
“Y-Yes, Kirishima-sama.” You address him by his title. Even with how much you tried to feign innocence, it wasn’t enough for him.
He sighs as he shakes his head, sitting up as he pats his lap for you to get on it. You outwardly pouted as you knew where he was going, pinning yourself up into his lap and hanging your head as you try to prepare yourself for his punishment. His hands ran over your untouched skin, relishing in the nice feeling of your rump under him. He spread your cheeks to watch what was hidden between it, holding in his hum of delight at the sight of his cum that stuffed both of your holes. He could feel his boner start to arise again, not hiding to cover it up or stop it from poking your side.
“Count.” Kirishima’s hand swung back before giving it a harsh slap, the sound of his rough hand hitting your skin. You swallowed as you tried to keep yourself from letting out any noise, your breath getting light.
“O-One.” As soon as the words left your mouth, his hand met with the fat of your cheek again. “Two.” He rubs your skin to give you a bit of a break, his thumbs admiring as your cheek starts to radiate a warm heat to heal the pain of his spanks. He muttered small praises to you as you managed to not resist his punishment, his hand moving between your legs and rubbing your slickened cunt. His heart skipped a beat at the feeling. Although you were only one of his customers, he couldn’t help but enjoy himself each time you came and paid him to take care of your needs.
He didn’t say anything as he inserted his middle finger into your cunt, feeling at how hot you were. He pumped his finger into you a few times before pulling it out and examining his now wet fingers. Kirishima wasted no time in using the same hand to spank your cheeks once again, your wanton and needy voice following along with it.
“Eight…. N-N…!” You tried to keep up, your hands clenching as the pain was getting to you but you couldn’t deny the hot pleasure that came with it. His hand came up to pull your hair back, giving you another one as you couldn’t finish the second to last current number of spanks he gave you. “Nine!” Your eyes bead with pleasure. You had no choice but to whimper the double-digit that followed after it, moaning as the humiliation of it all poked at your clit.
“You’re a little slut, aren’t you? Enjoying when your owner punishes you like this?” Kirishima leans closer to you so his words could resonate better than you. His hand moved to tease your lower lips once again, this time letting out a hum of approval at the wetness sinking in two fingers. He took great joy as your jaw dropped, your back arching as your hips begged for him to play with you more. His fingers moved in a rhythm that he deemed you earned, his fingers curled enough to massage your walls. Kirishima held great pride in the disobedience. He wasn’t shy in finding the spot to make you cringe in pleasure, abusing it as you tried hard not to squirm in his hold. It almost felt like he was going to grant you the reward of letting you cum on his fingers from complying to him until his “nice” nature subsided and he gave you another slap. Your breathing went ragged at the feeling, body shuddering as you tried hard not to give in to your body’s screaming desires. He let go of your hair and giving your scalp and massage, the dopamine from it causing you to almost purr out, making him chuckle.
“My pet…” Kirishima smiled. He pulled away to help you up, standing up so his body easily towers over yours. He held your cheek in his hand, his hand warm from the harsh treatment he gave you before. He gave you a look over as he weighed out his options. He carefully guided you to the velvety bed, the soft texture of it caressing your skin and giving you a small sense of comfort. He got between your legs in his half-naked glory, the way his body was ripped and the miscellaneous tattoos he’s earned over the years is always what he was your favourite when you visited. You sat up as you knew what to do, scooting close enough to shimmy his pants and get him undressed. You gave him a look nothing short but pitiful, your eyes begging to touch and kiss him before he decided to further on his earlier plans.
Your lips were desperate to kiss at his skin, your hands roaming and relishing the feeling of his muscular built under your palms. You looked up at him as you tried to “sway” your way back into his good graces. Although your efforts were much appreciated, it didn’t work. He tusked at your almost pathetic attempts, managing to stop you and lift your head so you could watch up at him. “I don’t think you’ve learned your lesson yet.” His large hand came up to cup your cheeks in a tight grip, his eyes squinting as he nodded his slowly at you as if to make you incapable of understanding his words for yourself. “Do you agree?” You couldn’t help but mindlessly agree, wanting to feel the heat of your bum on other parts of your body… more specifically-
Your breath got caught in your throat as you felt gravity tug at you. You weren’t prepared for Kirishima to push you back against the mattress, the force of it causing your body to bounce to level out the momentum. Before you could recover from the shocking feeling, he was already on top of you and spreading your legs to allow him to enter. You moaned as he slid his cock into you, the drippage from before helping many as well as the leftover creampie from a little over an hour ago. He brought your legs up, his hands gripping the back of your thighs in a style that expertly folded your body against itself, having no choice but to take his unrelenting thrusts. Naturally, you had to brace yourself, him offering no barrier for you to do so yourself.
Kirishima had no qualms in delivering his thrusts at such a harsh and fast speed, knowing that it would leave you wobbling tonight and have you aching tomorrow. Either you took him like you usually did, wanting to earn his approval once again. To explain how he acted towards you was almost intricate, the unspoken connection you two had when you met but left behind when you were done with your sessions was something one could question. He’s able to hold both your thighs together using the back of your legs, leaning down closer to your body so he could wrap his hand around your throat. He started to squeeze, testing your limit and cussing lowly under his breath when you affirmed it was enough when his hand was just so close to damaging you.
He never knew why or how you liked the pain so much but he never complained. As much as he liked treating you like the princess you were, he also couldn’t help but indulge fully each time you gave an opening to be used, “punished” was the formal term you two used. When you were obedient to follow his orders is when he thanked whoever is up there that someone as deviant as you chose him and only him every time. Just the thought of waiting unironically for you to come back always made his heart race, forbidding in the back of his head that you never would get into a relationship. Hell, let it fucking be him, he’d put a ring on you for-fucking-sure. He fucked you as if you were his, and both of you knew that he did and that’s what drew you in each time.
It was a game of cat and mouse, except the mouse liked to be caught while still being able to run each time. Which always made it… fun. If you looked close enough you wouldn’t be able to miss the longing gazes in both of you, the sexual tension between you two was unmatchable. Each time he fucked you with this much passion and vigor is when he had to remind you you were his. Your hands gripped his arm as your nails dug into his wrist, eyes rolling back as the low circulation of oxygen was starting to get to you, cunt squeezing him as you tried to warn him of the on-cumming orgasm that was about to arrive.
“C-Cum…~!” You choked out against his hand. He loosened his hold just a bit to let the lost blood rush back up to your head and re-circulate throughout your head. The pounding of it didn’t even hurt, the odd pleasure of it making you cum against his expecting length, your cunt happily taking his load as he emptied into you. You could feel his pelvis press up against your ass and tip poke at your cervix, the feeling of semen spilling into your womb was enough to make you tremble. “Eijiro!” You whimper out, head throwing back as he ground into you happily.
The sound of you calling his name made his heart bump, a hot blush coming across cheeks, different from the erotic one from before. He quickly composed himself as he slowly pulled out of you, keeping your thighs together, and watched as your cunt was in the same state it was before you had gotten your punishment. He gave your cheeks another few spanks, squeezing it afterward to feel radiate in heat. He snapped up to look up at you, drinking in the sight of your mouth agape and drool coming from the corner of your mouth and your eyes lidded. Your chest heaved as you came down from your high, eyes almost falling disappointed as you both realize your time is about to come up.
“Stick out your tongue for me.” Kirishima commands, your actions follow after just as you should. His last words are what makes your heart skip a beat, gladly accepting and bracing yourself as you could feel his tip poke at your back hole.
“Let’s not waste our last hour~”

So Strong as Gentleness; Or, Powers and Prejudice 2/?
Chapter 2: Immovable Object
For generations, the Bingleys had been the staunchest allies of the city’s superhumans, and the current generation had lived up to the family legacy. It was commonly conjectured that Charles Bingley himself numbered among the city’s masked superheroes--that he was the alter ego of the Storm King or the Nighthawk or the Blur--but it was just as commonly argued that this would unite too many blessings in a single man. Charles Bingley was good-looking and gentleman-like; he had a pleasant countenance and easy, unaffected manners. He united personal fortune with personal charm, and he had no need of superhuman talents to make him one of the city’s most extraordinary citizens.
It was with great astonishment that Jane noted his presence at Bingley Enterprise’s headquarters when she and Lizzie arrived at the recruitment event. The crowd was vast, but Mr. Bingley darted through with astonishing speed, shaking hands with everyone, delighted by the day and pleased by all in attendance. Though the strictures of the event required Jane to spend most of her time filling out forms and conducting interviews with middle management, she received a moment’s attention from the man himself. He approached her just as she was departing from an informational table, offered a handshake, and desired to know her opinion of the event, her occupational and educational history, her opinion of Netherfield, her favorite popular musicians, and if she had noticed the heavily laden refreshment table in the main lobby. Jane provided all the information desired and was surprised to find Charles Bingley genuinely interested in the answers. A few moments of conversation left her convinced that Charles Bingley was all that a young man ought to be--sensible, good-humored, lively. She had never seen such happy manners--so much ease, with such perfect good breeding.
It was not until she caught sight of Lizzie--reapproaching her after they’d been separated by the crowd--that Jane remembered their mother’s purpose in sending them to the event. But by this point, Mr. Bingley was already being pulled away from the conference.
In the course of the day, Mr. Bingley had gained a shadow--a tall, dark-haired young man who was as aloof and elegant as one expected the heir to a corporation to be. Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy was head of a Pemberley corporation, with fortune and fame for such that eclipsed the Bingley reputation. He rarely left the city of Pemberley, and Jane could not fathom why a Bingley event had drawn him away from his own business concerns.
It seemed that Mr. Darcy had similar questions for Bingley, because after Darcy had pulled him a few steps away, Jane overheard him scolding his friend. “You shouldn’t waste your time with this nonsense.”
“Nonsense? Darcy, you know as well as I do that vetting future hires is a prime security concern.”
“You are socializing when you’re needed elsewhere.”
“Caroline has it well in hand. If my help is needed, I can rush to the rescue, but until then, my time is as well spent here as anywhere. Bingley Enterprises is a powerful force for good in this city.”
“Not as powerful as some.”
“Don’t force me to modesty, Darcy. I know our organization is primitive compared to what you have in Pemberley, but our strategies are effective for Netherfield, and if you could just trust...”
It was at this point that the two men moved too far away from Jane for her to hear any more of their conversation. Turning to her sister, she asked, “What do you make of that, Lizzie?” Her sister had undoubtedly overheard the same conversation--perhaps was hearing it still, as her senses retained some of their animal acuteness even in human form.
“Is it not obvious?” Lizzie said with a laugh. “It appears our company is not exalted enough for the grand Mr. Darcy. In the heights of his villainy, he has deprived you of a charming conversational partner and destroyed your chances of personal happiness.”
Jane sighed. “Mother will be disappointed. I made no mention of--”
“This has nothing to do with our mother. I was speaking of your obvious infatuation with a certain philanthropist.”
Jane had, from a young age, trained herself out of all outward displays of emotion--a necessary habit when any physical outburst had the potential to tear down walls--and she was proud that she did not so much as blush in response to Lizzie’s insinuation. “He is very charming. But I do not think five minutes of conversation is enough for you to pin all my happiness upon him.” She watched the two men disappear further into the crowd. "Perhaps, if my application is accepted, we can renew our acquaintance, but I have have lost my chance today.”
In this, Jane soon found herself mistaken. As the event was ending and Jane and Lizzie were exiting through the revolving doors of Bingley Enterprise’s main lobby, she found their compartment suddenly shared by a third person, who was none other than Charles Bingley himself.
“Miss Bennet,” he said. “I am glad to have found you. I wished to apologize for my abrupt departure from our earlier conversation.”
Jane found herself stunned by more than the sunlight as they emerged onto the sidewalk outside. “No apology is necessary. I understand you have many other concerns.”
“That is no excuse for uncivility,” Bingley said, “Though Darcy would argue otherwise. He is always telling me to devote my time to more serious matters, but I say it is always worthwhile to be on friendly terms with our neighbors.”
Lizzie said, “It seems Mr. Darcy is uncommonly conceited.”
“No better man in the world!” Bingley said, rising to a good-hearted defense of his friend. “Only too apt to take the weight of the world on his shoulders and demand that I carry the same burden. I dare say he has a point, but one can better do good in the world by knowing the people within it.”
“A sensible philosophy,” Jane said.
“And apt to make you much more popular with us common citizens,” Lizzie said.
“No one is common,” Bingley said, “especially in Netherfield.”
Jane was struck by the fear that he was about to realize just how true that statement was. For Lizzie’s attention was suddenly riveted to the bank across the street, and her pupils had already turned to cat-like slits.
“What is it, Lizzie?” Jane asked, hoping by conversation to keep her sister tethered to her human form. Lizzie had gained a great amount of control over her transformations, but the jaguar was likely to emerge unbidden in moments of danger. Lizzie had never transformed in so large a crowd before, and Jane did not know, in the case of disaster, if the jaguar could distinguish threats from innocent bystanders.
“Something is happening,” Lizzie said. “At the bank. I think there might be--”
Her words were drowned out by the explosion. The facade of the bank erupted into flame, and debris was headed in their direction. Jane tried to position herself as a shield to Mr. Bingley and Lizzie, but the sudden movement left her off-balance and falling.
Before she could right herself--before she could even see the results of the explosion--Jane suddenly found herself standing in an alleyway two blocks distant from Netherfield Enterprises. Mr. Bingley was at her side, bent over to catch his breath, with the blue half-mask of the Blur half-pulled over his face.
“Mr. Bingley?”
The man turned away, shielding his face with his hand. “You weren’t supposed to see--I’m usually gone by now, but you--you’re heavier than you look.”
Most other girls, perhaps, would have been offended by such comments, but Jane was merely impressed that he had moved her at all. If she hadn’t been falling, he wouldn’t have managed it--she had been told that trying to move her from where she was standing was like running face-first into a steel girder.
“What’s happening?” she asked, helping Mr. Bingley to straighten his skewed mask. The daughters of Mrs. Bennet knew that there was nothing so important to the average hero than the secret of their identity.
“Heist of some kind,” Bingley said. “We thought there might be villain movement today, but didn’t think they’d strike so close to the Enterprises building.”
“We have to go back!” Jane shouted, dashing out of the alley. “Lizzie!” There was no doubt that the jaguar was loose, and Jane was best able to keep her sister in control of her humanity.
“Wait!” he shouted in alarm. “I can go back to help her, but you mustn’t endanger yourself.”
Jane continued another city block, unheeding. She could see the bank now, chaos erupting as crowds fled from the disaster. From the destroyed facade, some variety of spidery, villainous robot had emerged, tossing aside people and vehicles that hindered its attempts at escape.
“Miss Bennet, please!” Bingley was at her side, apparently attempting the same rescue he’d completed moments before, but unable to budge her an inch.
“Help them!” Jane said. “I’ll be fine!”
At that moment, the rampaging robot picked up a green sedan and tossed it over the crowd, directly toward Jane’s position. Jane lifted both arms and caught the car by its front bumper. She held it aloft until she was certain the sidewalk before her was clear of bystanders, then she set it lightly on the ground.
She turned around to see the Blur, Netherfield’s most famous speedster, standing motionless, his jaw slack.
“I see,” he said, gathering his composure. He stepped toward her. “I must apologize. It appears you were not in want of a rescue. But if I may ask, are you in possession of a good mask?”

You bustle around the cottage sweeping cat hair and dust, mixing the white of the chalk dust with the crimson blood of Grandmother’s sacrificial cat.
Your attempts to tidy the space is wasted as you’re only making it worse, but rather than focus on her words you prefer to clean.
She watches you from the seat at her table where you placed her. A cup of water gripped in her withered hand, still trembling slightly.
“Stop cleaning, girl!” Grandmother chides, watching you with annoyance as you stop amongst the mess on her floor and throw your hands out to your sides in a clear indication of not understanding.
“What would you have me do?” You ask her, voice tight with distress. “You tell me that my husband will fight to his death and I am supposed to what? Dance?”
“Just sit down.” She points at the seat across from her, her finger crooked and weak.
You drop the broom where you stand and plop yourself down on the indicated seat while ignoring the creak of the weathered wood. The old woman would resist new furnishings though you’d managed to sneak in a new bed and kitchenware.
“You killed your cat.” You tell her, as if she doesn’t know.
“Yes.” She agrees and lifts the small cup to her lips to take a drink.
“Why?”
“I had to see.” She explains. “Something was…was there.”
“When I found you outside Steve’s office?” You check, though you know her answer.
“Yes.” With a sigh she captures your gaze and does not release it. “I have sensed a darkness growing in the world. Something elusive. Hidden. It has kept its face secret, behind that of puppets. It uses others to do its bidding and until today I had no idea what that bidding was.
“He is gathering six relics. Stones. Rich in magic properties. Richer than any other relics I have ever come across. Each of them with powers more terrifying than the last.”
“What kind of powers?” You ask her, voice feeble and wispy.
“Powers to control time. Power to manipulate the mind and the very fabric of space and reality.” She warns. “Powers to rule the world…or wipe it from existence.”
Your heart grows cold, slipping into the pit of your stomach as you picture Steve in his armor standing before such massive power. What could your warrior husband do in the face of such might?
“Who is he?” You ask her, eager to put a face to the threat.
“I don’t know.” She says, looking down at the necklace that always rests around your neck. The locket that is Steve’s insignia, with his picture along with your parents. “I cannot see his face. I can only feel him. He is stronger than the king. Stronger than many of those who fight here. Together they may defeat him, but I did not see them together. I saw only your husband, the bodies of those you love surrounded him, and he fell too.”
You get up, unwilling to let her convince you despite you having already accepted her words. “I cannot listen to this.”
“You must, girl. You must take heed of what I tell you and prepare yourself for what is to come. Take your daughter and go as far away from here as possible but even that may not save you.” She adds as an afterthought. “I feel this evil plans for more than death. He has such a will.”
Turning to her you consider her thoughtful expression and the way she seems lost to her vision. She believes it with every fiber of her being and your own heart is swayed into panic as you throw yourself onto your knees at her feet.
Gripping the hand she has resting on her lap, you raise it to your breast and hold it there to where your heart is pounding.
“There must be something you can do. Something that will save him.” You reason, pleading for her to see reason as if she held the very fate of Steve within her old hands. “Won’t you try?”
“I cannot.” She shakes her head. “Such magics are forbidden. I am no dark witch.”
Her insistence is fractured, her own eyes betray her as she eyes you up and then turns away.
Her fondness is clear. You know that she loves you despite the way she speaks to you at times. She has fought hard for your happiness. If you would beg for her life, you think she might give it up.
“Is there no way? Nothing? Surely there is a chance to change things without resorting to dark magics? Please, Grandmother…” Before you know what’s happening, you’re crying.
Tears flow freely across your cheeks but your voice is strong in the only way that it can be when you’re pleading for your husband’s life.
“I cannot live in a world where my husband is not alive. Please…help me. Help me save him. There must be a way. There must be…please. We just had our daughter…” You lay your head in her lap, overcome with fear at this future she’s seen. “Please.”
Her silence is heavy. You can feel her thinking, can feel her mind searching for a way to give you what you want.
You have always loved this old woman but until today, you had not considered how much she might truly love you as one would a true granddaughter.
“Give me time.” She sighs.
“You’ll try?!” You gasp, your heart soaring.
With an elated sob you drop your head onto her lap and with gentle, feeble hands, she strokes the back of your head.
“I will think on it. I will try. I cannot make any promises.” She warns you, reaching under your chin to draw your gaze up. “What you ask for will not be easy. Is he worth it?”
You blink, confused by her question because in your mind there is absolutely no doubt.
“He’s worth more. He’s worth everything.” You nod. “I love him.”
Grandmother’s gaze withers and she releases you, nudging you away.
“Go. Be with your husband and child. Let me ponder.” She orders and slowly you rise.
You’re so stunned you have to keep a hand on the table as you rise to keep your knees buckling.
“When will you know?” You ask her, sniffling from the tears you shed.
“Go.” She orders again, staring at the hem of your dress. “And change your dress. You’re covered in blood.”
~~~~~~~~~~
Standing still, you hold tight to the lower left post of your bed as your corset is laced again.
The copper tub by the roaring fire in your bedroom sits lukewarm, full pink and wine-colored peony blooms floating within its oiled surface.
“Why was there blood on your dress?” Natasha wonders, tugging tight on your laces making you gasp.
“It’s not important.” You tell her, then think better of keeping her completely in the dark. “There was a dead cat on the way to Grandmother’s and I didn’t realize it until I came upon it.”
Fuck, was that believable? Does she trust you enough to accept your words without doubt?
“You’re keeping something from me.” She counters, frowning as she ties the corset closed.
Apparently not.
“I’m not.” You argue, but after her silence pierces your soul, you sigh. “I’m worried.”
“About Hydra?” She asks, supplying you with an appropriate alternative to the truth.
“Of course.” You grasp onto this straw and lean your stress onto this very real threat. “The last time I was within their vicinity someone tried to kill me and Maggie.”
“That won’t happen again.” Natasha assures you, moving towards you with a long ivory gown. The slightly yellowish tinge to the flowing fabric is pretty, though you note this in the back of your head. You’re too preoccupied with the threats looming overhead to notice how pretty the dress is. “I should have stayed with you.”
“It wasn’t your fault Nat. Pierce knew what he was doing. He’d been to father’s many times and he knew that I’d be in that part of the castle. He knew that you’d all be focused elsewhere. He was going to find a way to me one way or another.” You reason, but you know that if Peter or Nat had been there with you, there would have been a better chance of getting away with greater speed.
“I will never leave your side again.” Nat declares passionately but you huff a laugh and turn to look at her as she gathers up the skirt of your dress, hooking her arms through it to make ready for you to wear.
“Nat,” You smile. “I love you, and maybe you’re right and things would have been better if you or someone else had been by my side that night. But you cannot be beside me always. You’re a wife now. And even if you cannot be a mother naturally, there are many other ways to have children.”
Nat drops her arms, watching you with a concerned and furrowed brow. She’s clearly focused on you and not herself. You want to remedy that quickly. You love her, how can you allow her to only ever let you be her concern?
“You two must have discussed it?” You prompt, knowing that Bucky would not give up on giving Nat what she most desperately desires. “I know you want to be a mother. You love children.”
She seems to realize that you are not about to let this drop, so she sighs, relaxing a bit.
“I have thought about it.” She nods. “And yes, I do love children but I’m not sure if it’s right for me with the life that Bucky and I lead.”
Your heart aches suddenly, a renewal of Grandmother’s words reminding you that your daughter could lose her father. She so damn right about that.
“I don’t blame you.” You nod, sitting yourself on the end of the bed. “This life that all of you have chosen is one most unwelcome to the traditional family. But it is possible. Father and Mother have Morgana, Lord and Lady Lang have their daughter. Steve and I now have Margaret.
“It may not be ideal, certainly. But possible.” You offer in encouragement.
You don’t want her to give up. You want her to be happy.
Nat looks down at your stocking covered feet and nods.
“You don’t have to. Of course, it is entirely your choice and Bucky’s. I’m not trying to say that you should have children. But if you should you choose to have them, it is possible to live both lives.” You really hope that you’re not putting any pressure on her to raise a child when she might not want to.
Natasha’s inability to have children naturally should not be a hindrance on her desire to be a mother if she should decide to try. There are thousands of children in orphanages across the Kingdoms that would benefit greatly from a loving home that you know Bucky and Nat would provide effortlessly.
At the end of the day however, you know it is their choice.
“I appreciate your support.” Nat admits, gathering your skirts again and then holding them open for you to put your head through. “Truly. It means so much to me that you think I could do a good job. As a mother.”
You stand and stick your head through the dress and begin to pull your arms through the large puffed sleeves as Natasha straightens your skirt.
The neckline is ruffled, heart shaped, and low. The sleeves are also ruffled, small cinches that wrap around your arm mid-bicep leaving your shoulders and neckline exposed. Nat turns you and quickly laces up the back of the dress. She pulls it tight so that there is no chance of it slipping down.
“Isn’t this a little-?”
“You look beautiful.” Natasha smiles, fixing a long pink sash around your waist that she ties into a long loose bow above the curve of your bum. “Shall I braid your hair again?”
Natasha’s hands work fast, her fingers nimble and familiar with your hair’s texture and flow. The skirt is so long and flowing that you wonder if something special has been planned for you to attend as you feel that despite the somewhat casual look of the dress, it also doubles as pretty in that formal sense.
Your fingers find the embroidered pink and white peonies on the bodice that decorate your breast.
“Am I seeing someone special today?” You ask.
“No.” Natasha smiles. “Just us. Lunch is being served in the garden for you, Margaret, and Steve. Bucky and I shall be nearby. Peter will be close too. No one special.”
You huff a laugh as she lists all of the most precious people in your life. “So, only those special to me then?”
Nat chuckles and finishing tying off your hair.
“Lunch is for you, Steve, and Maggie. Steve expressed a wish to spend some quiet time alone with the two of you. He knows he’s been busy the past few weeks racing about chasing leads on this new Hydra weapon. He wants to make it up to you and I know he’d appreciate you in this dress.”
Her explanation makes sense but you’re successfully distracted from the dress by the mention of Hydra.
“How was the search?” You suddenly wonder, remembering Steve’s orders for her and Bucky.
“We’ve spread the word and will go out again tonight to search. I’ll tell you if anyone is found.”
“I’d like to know what’s happening with this.” You turn to her, adjusting within her grip as she reaches down to fuss with your dress. “I need to know, Nat. I can’t be kept in the dark again.”
Natasha drops her hands, placing them on her hips as she considers the look in your eyes.
“You’re not saying something.” She realizes. “What’s troubling you?”
“Nothing.” You say quickly, a shrug thrown her way just to brush off the concern. “I just don’t want any surprises. Not like before. This threat seems insignificant but what if there’s more to this mysterious weapon? I want to know what you’re all walking into.”
“Steve has promised to keep you appraised.” Nat promises you. “I will hold him to his word.”
Slowly, as the truth of her words shines through her eyes, a small smile stretches your lips.
“Thanks, Nat.”
~~~~~~~~~~
As you approach your renovated pavilion, peony blossoms blooming all around in varying shades of pink, you adjust Maggie in your arms.
You’re careful with your own dress. Double-checking the top of your bodice to make sure for the tenth time that you are covered after feeding your daughter. Nat made sure it was tight again but you’re fretting is ceaseless as a mother now.
The corset you’re wearing made especially for you since you are nursing, makes it easy for you to feed her without much fuss. Steve seems to favor it too though you’ve told him to be gentle and he’s avoided enjoying your breasts while you’re focused on raising your little one.
Aside from a loving caress and gentle butterfly kisses when the two of you make love, he’s avoided touching them.
Reaching the stairs, you fix your daughter’s dress—changed to match yours with endless ruffles but the same peony embroidery pattern on her little chest and pink sash around her little waist.
Steve rises quickly, rushing towards you with his arms extended.
Maggie coos excitedly, her little high-pitched squeaks and goos nearly make you swoon as she kicks her little legs excitedly. She’s not exactly screaming yet, but her noises are long and eager.
“There’s my princess.” Steve says proudly, his eyes flooding with love as he takes her into his large arms and kisses her chubby cheek.
He turns her to sit with her little back pressed against his chest and smiles at you while your own eyes are glued to your daughter.
“And my beautiful Queen.” He gushes, pulling your attention away from Maggie as he leans down slowly until he meets your lips with a long slow peck. “How are you?”
His voice is soft and deep. “I’m very well.”
It’s almost a lie.
In this moment, here with Steve and Maggie, you are most definitely well. You’re happy and you wouldn’t want to be anywhere else.
Your heart still weighs a ton with Grandmother’s news.
For a terrible moment as Steve walks away from you to sit down with Maggie on his lap, you remember her words and your knees almost buckle.
With him focused on the little one, you manage to sit yourself down before he can notice.
Rapid footsteps climb the stairs behind you. You turn to find Peter moving in to stand beside you both. He smiles excitedly as he watches Maggie. He, like everyone else in the castle, is head over heels for her.
No one draws a smile quicker than Maggie, even from the gentry that had so readily spread rumors about you.
This makes you happy. Your daughter accepted.
“Cook will be out with your meals shortly, your Majesties.” He informs you both.
“Won’t you join us?” You ask him, but Peter meets Steve’s eyes for a moment then reaches up to scratch behind his head, his cheeks flushing pink.
Clearly Steve had made it clear that he wanted to spend time with you and Maggie alone to more than just Nat. However, there’s something else in that rosy tint in Peter’s cheeks.
“I…I’m actually meeting Morgana in the libraries to help her with her studies. I will cancel with her if you wish me to stay?” He offers, though you see the disappointment in his eyes.
“No.” You hurry to assure him. “No, we’re fine. I just wanted to be sure you ate.”
“Thank you, your Majesty. I believe Cook is sending sandwiches to the library for us.” Peter bows and with an excitement in his step you watch him until he’s out of sight.
“They make a good match.” You smile, turning to take a sip of water from the silver goblet before you.
“Who?” Steve asks, confused. He bounces his leg to keep Maggie occupied while allowing her to hold his finger in her tight tiny fist. She drags it to her mouth and bites it with her gums, yet Steve doesn’t seem to notice.
“Peter and Morgana.”
“Peter and your sister?” Steve asks in shock. “But…she’s so young.”
“She’s fifteen, going on sixteen.” You remind him. “If they are engaged this year that will still leave them with two years of courtship before they’re married. That is the custom in Malibia.
She’ll be eighteen by then and Peter will be twenty-four. Some people would say those are two ages perfect for marrying.”
Despite the pleasant picture you paint, Steve’s frown only grows.
“What?” You chuckle, reaching into your skirts to find the pocket where you’d placed a few small towels for Maggie’s constant drooling.
You offer Steve the towel but he’s still frowning? No…he’s pouting! You get up and move around to wipe her chin before placing the towel in Steve’s hand.
“Why are you pouting?”
“I’m not pouting.” Steve grumbles.
It makes you laugh again. “Steve…”
“Maggie will not be getting engaged until she’s at least twenty.” He suddenly declares. “I’ll lock her up in the West tower until she’s that age and only then will I allow her to entertain the idea of a suitor.”
“Are you worried that you’ll only have her for sixteen years?” You chuckle, watching the worry in his eyes as he cradles Maggie closer, stroking her rounded cheeks with gentle thumbs.
“She’s mine right now.” Steve laments, looking down at her as she continues to chew on his finger. “I don’t want to part with her. I’ve waited so long for her for some boy to come take her from me.”
“Oh, my darling.” You chuckle but this time with full sympathy for his heartbreak. “We will have lots of time with her. And even after she marries, she will always be our daughter.”
Steve’s eyes are glued to her little face and he completely doesn’t notice Cook come up to serve your meal. A few roast chickens with potatoes and carrots.
You eat in silence but quickly. Enjoying the sight of him growing more and more enamored with your daughter. Steve doesn’t seem to notice the time slip by as he distracts her with the towel you’d handed him.
She chatters about nothing in her baby speak, drawing smiles and chuckles from your husband.
Finally, you eat your last carrot and slide your chair back.
“I’m sorry.” You tell him, rising to your feet knowing you have no reason to be sorry. He’s so in love with her. Luckily, you’ve still managed to eat fast enough that the food is still warm for him. “I should hire a maid to watch her when we eat.”
It’s true that you’ll eventually need to hire someone to take care of her when you must deal with kingdom affairs too. You’re so reluctant to let someone else care for her. Just as Steve claims her passionately, you feel just as he does. She’s yours.
“Not yet.” Steve counters, letting you take her from him. He adjusts in his chair, wipes his hand then proceeds to eat, stealing glances at both of you as you move towards the benches that line the inner edge of the pavilion.
Everything is so perfect. So lovely.
You’re almost content in this moment, with your little girl in your arms and Steve sharing a meal with you. You’re very nearly happy until you look at him and like a raging storm Grandmother’s words destroy your fragile peace once more.
Steve is going to die.
He turns to you and smiles. He smiles at Maggie. He confesses his love for you both with it pouring from his eyes and while your heart aches, you vow to do anything to stop this new threat from taking him away.
~~~~~~~~~~
“Come to bed.” Steve pleads.
You glance at him through your looking glass, a hazy image because of the distance from your small table to the bed. The silver is in need of polishing or perhaps replacing. You don’t dare speak this thought aloud though.
Knowing Steve, he’d simply buy you a wall full of mirrors and you can’t have that.
Even blurry he’s a vision, an absolute fucking sight to behold with your daughter at the center of your bed his fingers tickling her tummy as she kicks her little legs excitedly. Her little hands absentmindedly stroking his arm.
He’s on his side, shirtless. His lower body hidden beneath the sheets of your bed as he lays naked underneath.
Despite that delectable fact, your eyes are glued to his gentle smile as he takes his hand and gently strokes the length of Maggie’s little nose. He’s noticed how that lulls her to sleep and does it to her every night to send her off when he’s not busy in meetings.
You finish tending to your hair, braiding it back once again to keep out of the way for your little one. When you turn in your seat to look at them, you find Maggie’s movements slowed. Her eyes are closing, little rosebud lips left open slightly.
She’s already fed and content. Your happy baby, so protected and cherished.
Despite his attentions to your daughter that you’ve spent the last ten minutes watching, when you look at him you find Steve’s eyes on you.
“Come to bed.” He urges you, a small twinkle of desire hidden in the tranquility of these moments he spends with Maggie but stares at you.
“Are you trying for a second?” You ask him, teasing as you rise and move to the bed. You know that look well by now.
Steve’s expression suddenly shift, concern etched across his face.
“Am I rushing you?” He asks, reaching for you as you kneel on the bed and gather your nightdress up so as not to trip on it. “I don’t want to hurt you.”
He’s thinking of this morning, already having had you in his den.
Since you’d given birth, he’s been so careful with you. Even when you’d assured him you were ready to be intimate with him again, he’d hesitated. Worried about hurting you or rushing your body into doing things you should not be doing.
Your smile only grows, a small chuckle escaping your lips as you settle in on Maggie’s right. She doesn’t even stir. Steve’s hand remains around your forearm, fingers gently caressing your skin.
“Why do you laugh?” He asks, his mouth perking at the corners despite his worry.
“You are not like any man I’ve ever met or heard of.” You confess. “Some of the women in Bright Rise, when they still spoke with me, would tell me about their husbands. They were like you were at the beginning of our marriage. Worse, as they took without care for their wives’ wishes. Some of them were always pregnant now that I think about it. Always trailed by a line of toddlers and children.
“The men didn’t care about their wives’ bodies or how their need to satiate their hungers affected the other.” You shake your head. “Some of the women even confessed to me that they took on lovers to find the enjoyment in fucking again.”
“Something you would have been forced to do had I continued in my foolish ways.” Steve suggests, unphased by your still somewhat rural tongue.
“Maybe…in the future. It would have taken me years of neglect to get to that point.” You nod, “Even with Thor, his touch was…unwelcome. He didn’t force me, but I did not feel right accepting his affections. I’m married. Even unhappy that wasn’t something I took lightly.”
Steve’s hand moves up to the top of your arm then slowly he drags it down to your wrist.
“Were you always this considerate? I mean, before me?” You wonder, looking deep into his storm blue eyes. “Say with Margaret? Or, perhaps the other women you were with before we married?”
Steve turns, laying himself on his back.
He releases your arm and gently strokes the length of his chest, fingers dancing across the tuft of blonde hair that rails all the way down below where the blanket ends at his waist. His other hand he shoves underneath his head as he thinks.
You wait patiently for him to be ready to speak. You’ve never asked him about his habits with other women in bed.
He steals several quick looks your way which tells you he’s nervous about answering you. Wary, in case it should prompt a fight. You can see the moment he decides to give in. His lips part a little, they stutter, then he speaks.
“Margaret was strong.” He states plainly, as if that explains it all.
You wait.
“Not that you aren’t!” He rushes to say, sitting up as gently as he can to keep from waking your daughter.
Maggie still stirs and whimpers. You place your hand on her chest and soothe her until she stills again.
“Can you put her in her bed?” You begin to sit up too, ready to do it yourself but Steve is faster, rushing so that you won’t have to.
“Of course! I’ll get her.” He gently scoops her up into his arms then quickly moves around to your side of the bed as you follow them with your eyes, turning your body as they go.
Gently he places her in her crib and tucks her in, shushing and soothing her as she complains then goes silent once more.
She isn’t too close, but you can still see her from your spot on the bed. Steve double checks by looking at you to see if you can still see her.
When he’s satisfied that you can, he moves back to you, crawling over you and stopping to give the tip of your nose a kiss as he goes before plopping himself down on his side once again. This time he reaches for you, grabby hands tracing the shape of your curves as he pulls you a little closer.
“What I meant, is that Margaret was willful. She knew what she wanted, and she made certain that everyone else knew so too.” He clears his throat, suddenly nervous again. “In bed, she was just as certain of herself.
“Even though I made the first move, she was the one who took charge in our physical relationship. I knew that if something were to go wrong or if she was tired or too ill to be with me intimately, she would tell me.”
You listen without judgement and try to keep your face clear of all emotions other than the love you have for him. Even through this conversation, your heart pounds with dread as it repeats Grandmother’s words over and over, reminding you that every moment with Steve is precious.
“I never had to worry about Margaret’s body because she never had to compromise it for me. I did worry for her, but not in the same way.” Steve says, probably thinking about the risks that Margaret would have taken as part of the Avengers.
“And the other women?” You wonder.
“There weren’t many.” Steve assures you, looking down at your chest in embarrassment. “Only two.”
“You were grieving Margaret.” You nod, understanding. “That doesn’t mean you aren’t a man.”
Steve is silent for a moment, resting his head in his hand as he uses his elbow to prop himself up. With his other hand he traces nervous circles in the blanket between you.
“They were visiting ladies. Ladies who, like Margaret, knew what they wanted.” Steve sighs the lunges softly towards you, pushing you onto your back so suddenly it makes you gasp and then laugh.
As he settles his body halfway over yours, he smiles down at you.
His hands caress the sides of your face before he trails one hand along your sides, grabbing you with intent. You can feel the desire in his touch.
“Court ladies are all playing a game. It’s a language they speak that you don’t know.” Steve sighs heavily. “A set of rules that I’m glad you do not understand. You are nothing like them and I love you for it.”
“They had husbands?” You realize.
“Yes.” Steve nods. “Men who are too distracted by their own infidelities or too busy grasping at power to pay their wives any mind. With both of them it was only one night. It came and went so quickly I can barely remember them. I don’t even think I could tell you their names.”
His face grows solemn, sad as if remembering a painful memory that has since lost its sting but not the emotion of sorrow. “I didn’t enjoy myself. I was driven by lust, but I didn’t even…I made sure they were satisfied and left it at that.”
“Mm. You felt guilty.” You nod, understanding as you watch his full lips. The lower is so much bigger than the upper. You reach up and trace it, loving the soft plumpness of it.
“Does it not make you jealous?” He wonders, relaxing more of his weight onto you. “Does it not upset you?”
You meet his eyes again, a smile stretched across your face. You can see that he wants to know you’re jealous. He wants to know that you want him as much as he wants you.
So much progress…is this truly the man you married?
“Only as much as it would upset any wife to hear her beloved husband talk about his past adventures in fucking other women.”
Steve groans and buries his face into the side of your neck, wrapping his arms around you as you also wrap yours around his shoulders. You chuckle, caressing the back of his head.
“So, the concern is not normal?” You realize, feeling better but also worried that you’re not seeing the real Steve. That maybe he’s acting this way with you while acting a completely different way with everyone else.
Is this not who he is?
“No, the concern is normal.” Steve says, muffled against your skin, making you feel almost instantly better.
He pulls back to look down at you again.
“What I’m saying is that every woman that I have been with until you has never given me cause to be concerned. I didn’t hurt them the way I hurt you.” He frowns. “I didn’t take what they weren’t willing to give.”
You look away this time, the solemnity coming from you now. The shift of conversation making your heart ache. When you speak, your voice is quiet, subdued with the reminder of your wedding night.
“I wasn’t unwilling.” You correct him because you hadn’t been. Not that first night or any night after.
Your line was not one clearly drawn, certainly. You’d slept with him out of duty but that hadn’t meant you didn’t want to. He’s the most beautiful man you’d ever seen in your life. Of course, you’d wanted him.
You hadn’t told him no. You’d only told him to slow down. You know that for him, for Nat, for everyone who found out—that slow down had been enough. It should have been enough to stop him.
“You know what I mean.” Steve says, placing both his hands on the sides of your face to tilt your head back until you look at him. “I wounded you. I took something that was not mine to take.”
“But it was yours to take.” You correct him again, and he growls in his throat at you before shaking his head, the pain leaving his eyes to be replaced by admiration.
“I can still feel you, trembling and sobbing in my arms. I was disgusted with myself. I couldn’t believe that I could do that to anyone. And you were so…so kind and gentle. So eager to please and I took advantage of that.” Steve confesses. All of his thoughts spilling out of him like water. “I had turned this beautiful, sweet princess into a sobbing, fearful, and wounded creature. I was so consumed by my grief over Margaret and my anger at having to marry again when I wasn’t ready to do so that I wanted it over. In that moment, I didn’t care about the sweet woman beneath me.
“And even after I hurt you, when I came to see you, despite your fear your only concern was for the tears I shed.”
It takes a moment to find your voice, but you do. You swallow hard.
“I’d never seen a man cry.” You confess. “Much less a king.”
“I meant every tear.” Steve insists. “If I could take that night back, I would. If I could redo every night since, I would. I am concerned for you above anyone else, because in you I saw my darkest self and I never want to be that man for you again. I never want to hurt you.”
The two of you lapse into emotional but pleasant silence. Both hearts beating strongly against each other as his chest is pressed firmly against your own.
At last, you smile, a chuckle spilling from your lips as you reach up and tuck his hair behind his ear. It’s getting long again.
“Have you always made these long speeches? Or is that reserved for me as well?” You check, mostly just teasing.
Steve’s lips curl up, his eyes twinkling mischievously. “I make sure to give every pretty woman I see a lengthy speech. Whether they’re enjoyable is a different matter.”
You bite your lip, glaring at him but only in jest. Quickly he dips down to kiss your lips, letting it linger for a moment before he pulls back only a bit so that when he speaks, his lips are fluttering against your own.
“My declarations of love, however, are entirely yours alone.” He whispers. “Tell me to stop and I will obey, my Queen.”
His right hand moves down, searching until it finds the hem of your nightdress which he begins to tug up until he finds the top of your leg. He traces the dip of flesh there, tickling your skin in search of your already yearning core.
As his fingers make contact, you gasp into his slightly open mouth and it draws his attention back up to your face. He licks your lips, just a gentle flick of the tip of his tongue before he kisses you, sinking it into your depths where you meet his eager kiss with your own.
You moan quietly, a whimper of yearning as his fingers spread your folds and begin to explore you. The noises his hand makes absolutely sinful.
Eager for his touch, you bring your knees up. You spread your legs for him, and he pulls out of the kiss to slide down along your body. He does down, down, down until he’s settled between your legs.
He grabs one and throws it over his left shoulder, then the other over his right. He kisses your thighs, trailing his tongue in small circles before every gentle pucker. The anticipation curls your toes as he moves closer and closer to your cunt.
“Steve…” You whisper, aware of the baby asleep in her crib and your need to keep quiet so that she can sleep.
He dives in, his tongue making one long swipe of your dripping core.
You gasp, curling up towards him as your body is sent into shivers.
He grabs hold of your thighs roughly, pulling you hard against his face. Opening his mouth, he suckles on your clit, the gentle sound of his sucking filling your limbs with fire.
As much as you enjoy his mouth where it is, there’s an impatience that wages war within you.
After months of waiting to enjoy sleeping with him, now that you do, it makes you eager to have him within you.
“Steve, please…” You beg, reaching down and tugging on his hair.
He likes that, growling a little at the lusty whisper that is your plea.
Pressing kisses along the length of your body while he shoves your nightdress up higher and higher, he finally helps you pull it off before taking your breasts within his mouth.
His lips are soft against them, gentle in their suckling as he knows how painful you can find it now.
When you whimper from the soreness, he steals a quick look at you to make sure you aren’t in too much pain before he simply kisses them around the nipple.
You run your hand over his hair, a promise that someday he’ll be able to enjoy your breasts again. He reads your reassurance but dismisses it as he rushes to meet your lips in a demanding kiss.
Without warning he pushes into you. He stretches you, filling you up so pleasantly that you throw your head back but swallow the moan you’d normally release.
Fuck…Your mind supplies, nails raking along the scarred flesh of his shoulders.
“Fuck…” Steve groans into your ear, stopping once he’s buried within you. Great minds think alike, you guess.
“Don’t stop.” You beg and wrap your left arm around his shoulders while the other reaches down as far as it can to grab as much of his bum as possible and pull him close.
He starts slowly, letting you both relish in the silky way his cock slides out of you then back in.
“Kiss me.” You tell him, needing his mouth to silence the moans you feel bound to make.
He obliges, roughly meeting your lips with a frenzied and lustful kiss as he loses himself within you.
He doesn’t pound into you the way he did at the cottage. He knows he shouldn’t, so he doesn’t. Even though you want it, you’re grateful for his forethought and instead focus on the way he seems to know which angles to adjust so that his cock not only pierces you but presses against the most sensitive spots inside of you.
He moves faster, reaching down to massage your clit as he kisses his way down your neck.
The moment is sudden, and it surprises you when your body goes tense for a moment as your climax washes over you.
You pull Steve down against you, gripping him hard as you hold him tight while your body is overcome.
Steve continues to push into you. Faster as he realizes that you’ve reached your limit. He grunts as he picks up speed, tracing the shape of your back down to your ass where he takes hold of it, fingers digging into the muscle.
He pulls up a little, searching for your lips with his own, tongue delving into your mouth as you give him what he wants. Both of you moan into each other, muffled and needy until Steve’s body stutters and his heat spills into you over and over.
He thrusts with each burst of ecstasy that overtakes him. His groans grow lazy. His body loose. Your own is already numb and you go still beneath him as he trails lazy kisses along the misty skin of your neck and shoulders.
He sighs, laying his head against your clavicle where he relaxes on top of you, your hands gently stroking his back.
You steal a glance at Maggie in her crib, but she’s sound asleep. It relaxes you to know she’s unbothered and without meaning to, you and Steve both fall asleep.
~~~~~~~~~~
A loud thumping makes you twitch. It sounds distant but it startles you anyway.
In your arms, something large moves.
Your sleepy mind reminds you that it’s Steve and you sigh in your semi-sleep as your hands enjoy the feel of his hot body still resting on top of your own.
BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!
The thumping returns, this time louder and clearer.
A quiet whine to your right wakes you more quickly than the thumping and like you’ve been stunned with Thor’s lightning, you spring up from the bed, quickly sliding out from beneath Steve who also whines at your moving but peeks up at you as you rise.
“Whereyewgoin?” He asks, still mostly asleep.
“Go back to sleep.” You whisper to him from beside Maggie’s crib.
BOOM! BOOM-BOOM!
The thumping, which is actually a knocking on your door you realize, repeats.
Maggie whines again and you frown.
“Who’s there?” Steve asks towards the door, his voice more annoyed then upset.
“It’s Agatha, your Majesty.” One of the guards outside speaks.
“Don’t speak for me.” Grandmother’s voice grumbles.
“I’m sorry, your Majesty.” The guard says nervously, probably worried about the knocking, which means that was Grandmother and not the guard.
You look at Steve as Maggie begins to wake, her cries soft but rising as you continue to try and soothe her but now only halfheartedly.
Fear grips you, stealing you of your voice as you stare at your husband. Your little girl’s cries grow louder as she wakes but you’re frozen in place, terrified of what Grandmother could not wait until the morning to tell you.
“What, my flower?” Steve suddenly asks, sliding to the edge of the bed towards you.
“I…I should see what she wants.” You whisper, afraid to speak any louder despite your daughter already being awake.
“Go.” Steve urges you, grabbing your nightdress and moving towards you. He offers it to you as he reaches you. “I’ll put Maggie back to sleep.”
You take the nightdress with trembling hands. If Steve notices he doesn’t say so, but you don’t think he does as he’s already lifting Maggie from the crib, moving back towards the bed.
You dress in a hurry, then move to grab Steve’s robe as it’s closer and pull it over your body.
You’re tying it closed as the door opens upon your approach and find Grandmother pacing the hallway behind the two guards assigned to keep you and Maggie safe.
After what happened with Pierce, Steve is taking no chances.
“Grandmother?” You check, voice stronger but still just as terrified.
“We must speak.” She tells you, her voice strong and her eyes full of severity.
With a tentative nod you have her follow you into Steve’s den next door, shutting the door securely before you move into the room and offer her a seat in front of Steve’s desk.
“No.” She waves your offer off, pacing as you take a seat because your legs are weak again. “I have found a solution.”
“So quickly?” You gasp, hands balled into tight fists on your lap as you watch her pace.
“The sooner the better I would think in this situation. This is nothing like I have ever done before.” She admits. “It will take all of my power to do it.”
“It…will it hurt you?” You wonder, worried for her withered body.
“Probably not.” She shakes her head. “No way to know for sure. But it’s something I’m willing to die for.”
“What?” You gasp, suddenly terrified of losing her.
Finally, Grandmother stops her pacing and moves to stand before you.
“This threat is greater than I first thought.” She admits, slowly sitting herself down in the seat beside yours, turning it so that she can face you. “We cannot allow this power to grow. We can either stop it here, right now. Or we can let your husband stop it later. If we allow him to do it, it will take his life. There is no doubt in my mind of that. There will be others. He will not be the only to perish.
“Stopping this threat now is for everyone’s benefit and if I must pay with my life to save many others, I will do so willingly.” She declares.
“I can’t ask you to do that.” You shake your head, your emotions already raw.
“You’re not asking me, girl. I’m telling you that I must do it. I have already made my choice, now the only choice left to make is your own.” She fixes her gaze on you and you find you cannot look away.
“My own choice?”
“You asked me to save him. To ensure that he will live, a great sacrifice must be made. Separate from my own. I will provide the power, the strength for the incantation. Something else must be given for it to succeed.” Grandmother explains.
Your mind springs into action, thinking of the one thing you have of worth to give. Your life.
“So, I’ll…I’ll die?” You whisper, already in sorrow for leaving your husband and child.
“No.” Grandmother says. “No, I’m certain you will live.”
“Then what?”
“The price is impossible to know. It could be anything.” Grandmother gestures at you, looking you over from head to toe. “It could be your sight. Your ability to hear. Your voice. Your ability to walk. Whatever it is, it will be a great price to pay. Only you can choose to pay it but unless you do, I cannot go forward with the spell.”
“C-can I choose? Can I decide what it is that I sacrifice?” You hope, but what would you choose? What do you possibly have that could be worth your husband’s life?
“No. The magics will choose what to take. It will be equal to what it is you ask for, but only the magics can choose what that value is.” Grandmother explains.
This is impossible. This is unbelievable. This is torture.
You have to pay a price without knowing what it will be?
You know that your answer is yes. You’ll pay it. Whatever the price, you will give it willingly if it will save Steve’s life.
“I will pay it.” You nod. “Of course, I will. Yes.”
Grandmother takes your hand and squeezes it, a knowing look in her eyes. “I knew you would.”
She rises and you follow. Your hands feel weak but with the decision now made, you now it’s right and feel settled that you know this will soon be resolved.
Before the old woman can make it to the door, you reach out and grab her wrist, stopping her before she can leave.
“Grandmother…” You begin, waiting for her to turn.
She doesn’t. “Don’t get sentimental.” She says, voice strong though you’re sure that you can hear a small sadness in her tone.
“I want to thank you…for taking care of me. For loving me. I know that you could not always be there when I was young but you’re here now. Thank you.” You whisper, scared to speak louder in case you begin to cry. “I-I just wanted you to know. In case I cannot say it later or if you-”
You can’t even speak the words. She won’t die. She can’t.
With one withered hand, she reaches down and places it over your own. She gives you a squeeze, her hands trembling but reassuring.
“I don’t know when the spell will take effect. Go. Sleep soundly. Hold them close.” Grandmother advises then pushes your hand off her arm and disappears into the sleeping castle.
The very short walk back to your bedroom feels as if it takes forever. The guard make no comment as they open your door for you and you wander in, eyes searching for the loves of your life.
You find Steve snuggled up close to Maggie, his head pressed against the side of her own, his hand on her tummy and his eyes closed.
Maggie is not sleeping. She’s staring up at the ceiling with her little legs kicking gently as she coos and babbles her baby speak. One of her little hands is closed tightly around Steve’s finger, holding tight. As you move towards them, you notice how her hand doesn’t even close around his finger completely. She’s so small still. So fragile.
What if you can’t hold her after paying the price? What if you can’t hear her babble? What if you can’t see her little face or the way her eyes light up and her toothless smile spreads across her face as she spots you?
Just as she does now, she lets out a louder “Goo…” as she spots you and her legs go into a frenzy as she flails her limbs frantically.
You don’t want to cry but you feel the rush of sorrow overwhelm you. Quickly, before Steve can see, you drop onto the bed still wearing his robe and pull Maggie towards you. You hug her and turn her towards you, burying your face against her tiny chest.
Her little hands grab at you, whatever part of your head they can, and she pulls your ears, tugs your hair, scratches against your cheek but you don’t care. You inhale her scent, memorizing it just in case you lose the ability to smell.
After you’re sure you could never forget it, you tickle her sides until she’s giggling lightly, small bubbles and whines of amusement. It’s not a full laugh. She hasn’t done that for you yet. What if you never get to hear it?
You memorize this one anyway, put it away and lock it up within your heart where you know you will always be able to recall the pure sound of her innocence.
It takes every ounce of will power within you to stifle your desire to sob. Still, you manage it and when you’re certain you can face him, you pull back a bit to look at your daughter’s beautiful face.
She’s all Steve. You hardly recognize anything in her looks of you. She’s gorgeous. Pretty blonde hair, just like Steve’s only slightly darker in shade.
Her eyes are a piercing blue. Lighter than Steve’s but just as observant. She watches you, reaches out for your face where she places a small hand on your nose then slides it down to your lips which she casually grabs and releases before her eyes find her hand and she brings it to her mouth to taste.
You watch her for so long, you’re sure that it must nearly be morning, but the sky continues to be dark outside the windows of your room.
You sing to your little one. A quit lullaby that you hope she’ll remember if you can never speak to her again. You tell her you love her and sing some more.
She drifts off eventually, her little mouth open as she sleeps.
Finally, you turn your eyes on Steve, yearning to see him almost to an unnatural amount. You have never doubted it but in this moment as your eyes find him staring right back at you, you realize how much you truly love him. How much he’s changed your life.
Your world has grown since you met him. He’s changed you forever.
Will the sacrifice be your life? Will you be leaving them behind? Will you be wounding him again, just as Margaret had?
Even though Grandmother said it wouldn’t be, you can’t help but wonder and worry that you might very well be spending the last moments you’ll ever have with him and Maggie now.
What if you close your eyes and they should never open again?
At least she would have him. Maggie wouldn’t be alone. She would have her father. And he would have her.
If by some chance her father should also leave her behind, she’d have Nat and Bucky. She’d have Sam and Peter. She’d have the entire team to care for her. Father and Mother would probably try and take her to Malibia.
She would never need to worry about her meals or whether she could survive frigid winter temperatures. She would be protected and loved even if you aren’t around to make sure she is.
Steve blinks slowly. He’s sleepy but he’s trying to stay awake because you’re awake.
You’re not sure if he can tell that something is wrong, but you push yourself up towards him. You’re careful as you hover over Maggie, reaching to hook your hand behind his neck as he also pushes himself up and towards you.
You kiss him, slow and smooth until your heart begins to ache and your hand squeezes around his neck.
You kiss him with a bit more fervor and though he returns it, when you pull away, his brow is narrowed in confusion. Subtle concern.
“I love you.” You whisper to him, reaching down to trace the shape of his bottom lip with your thumb. You kiss him again. “I love you, forever.”
It’s a promise you have every intention of honoring. Will he love you even if you can’t talk? Will he love you if you can’t hear? Will he still love you if you are not the woman you are now?
You know that you can overcome anything. You can embrace a new way of living so long as it means that Steve and Maggie are safe. But will he see it that way? Will he love you for the woman you will become?
“You’re my entire world, Y/N.” He whispers back almost as if he can hear your thoughts and he wants to put you at ease.
His lips curl up at the corns softly as he blinks even slower than before as sleep begins to pull him under. “You and Maggie are my life.”
Your lip trembles as his eyes shut and do not open again, his head falling to his pillow.
“I love you…so…” He trails off, his words lost to dreams.
You stare at him and then Maggie. All night you stare at them, memorizing the way they breathe and smell. If you’re going to be changed forever, you’re going to remember this moment and cherish it until the day you die.
You will never forget it.
~~~~~~~~~~
1 Year & 3 Months Later
The sun is beaming. It’s strong. July is hot, even more so than normal. You groan as you look up to the sky and shield your eyes from the blinding light.
For a moment your mind goes hazy, full of fog. Something changes as it always does. Something shifts.
Something tugs at the corners of your mind. Something blurry and demanding. You get this way every single time you come here.
Every time you fill the wooden bucket, there’s a flash of something familiar.
You focus on the tug, allowing it to unearth the secret that eludes you.
There’s a quick flash that you don’t quite see. A golden hue. A storm blue circle.
Then your bucket overflows and the water splashes your feet, drenching your newly mended shoes.
They’re too small for your feet but it’s all you have.
“Damn.” You sigh, grunting as you lift the bucket and place it on the damp bank of the river.
Across the barren field, your little hut just at the opposite edge nestled into a grove of forest trees, Bright Rise begins to wake.
Another day, another scramble to find a way to keep your belly full.
“Time to check the traps.” You sigh, groaning as you lift the bucket and begin the trek back to your little hovel in the only village you’ve ever known.
The place you were born, but most definitely not home.
Your heart tells you that somewhere out there…somewhere else, your true home waits.
Sol x Female! Reader
Tumblr media
The weather had been pleasant and warm the day (Y/N) decided to pay her lover, Sol, a visit. No longer being able to look at his tired face, the girl decided enough was enough and was going to make him rest, for a couple of hours at least.
For a few of days, maybe even weeks, the two had little to no time to spend together. She couldn’t deny the fact that she missed their times together - baking cakes, playing with cat and getting on William’s last nerve.
Yet the lost time together wasn’t what she was the most worried about. It was the tons of paperwork that Sol seemed to be drowning in. And if that wasn’t enough, the gangs in the area had been causing trouble left and right, forcing Sol to intervene before something bad had happened.
(Y/N) was an understanding person and knew his work was important, it was all he had left from his parents after all. She didn’t want to pull him away from his work; however, the worry she felt was growing every day. Everyone needs a break from work at times, specially those who tended to overwork, which, unfortunately, Sol fit into that category.
With chocolate cake hidden inside a black bag, the young woman approached Ripeato, half-opening the entrance door before freezing in place. A soft object pressed against her calf, brushing itself on her with a gentle purr.
“Hey cat,” she whispered, bending over to greet the animal by brushing her fingers against it’s head. The black and white cat meowed at her, it’s blue eyes staring into hers.
“Sister-in-La — I mean, Big-Sister!” A sudden voice pulled her out of her thoughts. Quickly, as if in a rush, she abandoned the cat and closed the door to the shop, placing her hand against Babe’s mouth to stop him from giving away her presence.
“Shhh!” She quietened him before removing her hand from his face. “Hi Babe,” she spoke after making sure Sol wasn’t aware of her arrival. “Is Sol here?” She whispered,
Babe tilted his head lightly, confusion written all over his face, “Why are you whis- oh! Is this meant to be a surprise?” He looked inside the bag, smiling at the sight of the chocolate cake.
The girl breathed out a small laugh, nodding gently as an answer to his question, “Yes, Babe,” she confirmed.
"I'm guessing you want him to take a break? We've been trying to, but he won't listen. I hope he'll listen to you, Step-Sister," he huffed, his shoulders deflating slightly, "He's in his office... good luck...”
Placing a comforting hand on Babe’s shoulder, she made her way towards Sol’s office, where he had locked himself away for the past couple of days. At this point, all she wanted him to do was take a small break, maybe take a nap - anything but continue overworking himself.
She stopped in front of his door, taking her bottom lip between her teeth as she contemplated how to go about this. It’s not as if she was unwelcome in his office, no, Sol loved having her around, claiming that her presence calmed him. But there was also a chance he’d shoo her away and scold her for worrying about him.
Finally, after a few minutes of standing outside of his office like a lost puppy, she knocked on the wooden door. There was a long silence before a tired, almost inaudible, “Come in,” sounded from inside the room.
Quietly, she turned the door handle and entered the office, making sure not to make too much sound. Disturbing him wasn’t her intention, right away at least.
She felt a pang in her chest when her eyes settled on the black-haired. His figure was hunched over his desk, his hair dishevelled and jacket laying on the desk. He looked exhausted and she had no doubt that he felt even worse than he looked.
“Hi,” she whispered, afraid that her voice would scare him if she dared speak louder.
Her gentle voice gained Sol’s attention immediately, making him sit up straight and smile at her, almost convincing her that he was okay. Yet no matter how soft, sweet and convincing his smile was, his tired eyes betrayed him. “Hello, dear,” he spoke, his voice raspy from lack of speech and the exhaustion he was experiencing. “What brings you here?” He questioned, his brows knitting together.
With a swift movement, she closed the door behind her and approached Sol’s desk, placing the cake on a spare chair which stood in front of his desk. With no words leaving her mouth, she walked around the wooden workplace, only stopping when she was stood right behind him.
Her hands set on his shoulders, rubbing soft circled though his shirt before her fingers pressed into his sore muscles. A sigh of relief escaped Sol’s lips when he felt the knots in his muscles disappear slowly, the ache he was feeling subsiding ever so slightly.
“You’re overworking yourself,” she spoke quietly, continuing to massage his tense shoulders.
Sol licked his dry lips as he closed his eyes, “I’m almost finished,” he told her. The stacks of paper on his desk said otherwise, however.
“Sol,” she sighed out, her arms wrapping around his neck and she lowered herself, placing her head beside him. She placed a lovable kiss on his cheek, watching as a smile tugged at the corners of his lips before speaking, “You need to take a break.”
Sol let his head fall back onto her shoulder as he swallowed thickly, his hand reaching for hers to intertwine their fingers together. “I wish I could,” he sighed out, his eyes remaining closed, “I promise, as soon as I’m finished, we will-“
“Sol,” she cut him off before he could even finish his sentence. Gently, she shrugged his head off of her shoulder and walked in front of him, setting the papers aside to make some space for herself. With a small, almost unnoticeable scowl, she settled on the wooden desk and let her feet dangle freely before continuing to speak, “You need to take a break, Sol. This isn’t healthy.”
Sol huffed, his tired eyes staring into hers, “You know I hate when you worry for me,” he told her.
“How can I not worry when you’re overworking yourself?” She countered.
With the way she was positioned, (Y/N) could see how terribly he really looked. The dark circles beneath his eyes were purple, looking as if someone had punched him, his eyes were bloodshot and glossy, ready to take some rest from straining for so long. His hair was starting to get greasy from neglect. She could only guess how horribly his mental health was taking all the exertion.
The woman placed her hands on the armrests of his chair and pulled him towards her, setting his body between her legs. Then, out of nowhere, she placed her hand behind his head and laid him on her lap.
Too tired to protest, Sol accepted his fate. He laid still, enjoying the softness of the girl’s thighs, which were like pillows, slowly killing him to sleep as her fingers began to make their way through the strands of his hair. He hummed at the feeling, relaxing in her hold, no longer thinking about all the work he had left.
With a yawn, Sol wrapped his arms around her body, pulling her closer towards him. His hold on her was tight, as if he feared she would run away or disappear into thin air.
Continuing to play with his hair, she smiled, “You should get some sleep,” she told him, her only wish being to see him relax after so many painful hours of work.
Once again, Sol protested, shaking his head which was still in the girl’s lap, “No,” he argued, though his voice remained soft, “I need to finish this.”
A soft sigh got past the girl’s lips, her eyes closing at his stubbornness, “Sol, you need to learn how to accept help from others. Come on, even William knows he isn’t invincible and needs rest from time to time,” she said, her tone scolding, yet still soft and understanding.
Sol raised his head and looked up at the woman, “The sooner I fish my work, the sooner I can rest,” he reminded her, “And then you can continue spoiling me with affection as much as you’d like.”
“Or... you can do appropriate amount of work each day and rest during appropriate hours, so that I don’t have to make surprise visits in your office to spoil you with affection. Sounds better, doesn’t it?” she argued.
Sol rolled his eyes as he sat up straight, “What’s inside the bag?” He questioned in an attempt to change the subject and distract the girl.
“Ah!” She exclaimed and reached for the black bag, placing it beside her whilst Sol watched with curious eyes. “I almost forgot. William and I thought it would help with distracting you,” she sent him a small wink as she took out a plastic container from the bag and placed it on her lap.
Sol remained quiet, his stomach grumbling at the sight of the sweet dessert she had prepared for him. “You didn’t have to,” he told her. In reality, he wished they prepared the cake together instead, like they had done so many times before.
“I wanted to,” she replied as she opened the container and took out a fork from inside the bag. “You deserve a treat for all your hard work,” she quickly added.
She gathered some of the cake onto the fork and held it out for the man, his cheeks reddening upon realising she was going to feed him the dessert. As he moved forward, ready to open his mouth, she pulled the fork away from him.
“Only of you promise to take a break,” she told him. “Okay?”
Sol was ready to argue once again, but the pleading look in her worry-filled eyes told him not to. Instead, he nodded in agreement and watched as the girl’s face lit up with glee.
Happily, she poked his lip with the fork and watched him with a loving gaze. Locking eyes with her, Sol took the food into his mouth, never breaking eye contact as he let her feed him.
The sweet taste immediately filled his senses, as if waking him up from his drowsy state. He hummed as he chewed the cake, tasting the sweet chocolate on his tongue as (Y/N) gathered more cake on the utensil.
Upon swallowing, he smiled, “It’s fantastic,” he complimented, surprising him when her smile widened even more. Seeing her sweet smile was worth taking a break, he decided, as long as he got to see her smile.
“Thank you,” the girl replied before feeding him more of the sweet cake.
For the next few minutes, she continued feeding Sol the sweet dessert, watching as he devoured it as if it was the most delicious dish he had ever tasted. She wasn’t complaining, enjoying his positive reactions.
Eventually, she gathered the last bit of the chocolate cake onto the fork and lifted it towards him, eagerly waiting for him to take the last piece into his mouth. And without complaint, Sol are the last piece of the cake, the corner mouth pulling up into a smile.
As if I’m queue, she reached for another plastic container inside the bag, which held yet another slice of the cake. Sol smiled, more than happy to eat yet another slice of her delicious creation. However, before she managed to open it, his hand who’d wrapped around her wrist had stopped her. “Later,” he told her, taking the container and placing it on the desk as he stood up.
The girl jumped off the desk and followed in Sol’s lead as the two made their way towards the couch in the corner of the office. Gesturing to the sofa, (Y/N) slipped the shoes off her feet and laid down on the soft couch, watching as Sol copied her movements.
He climbed on beside her, using his arm to keep him up so that he could look into her eyes. “Thank you,” he spoke, “For caring about me,” he evaluated, his finger caressing the side of her face before he leaned forward.
His lips connected with hers, gently pushing against hers as a thank you for all the love she always made sure to give him - to keep reminding him that he was loved and that she’d always be there for him, no matter what.
She smiled into the kiss when the taste of the chocolate reached her tongue. She eventually pulled away, staring into his warm eyes as she placed one last pec against his lips before speaking, “get some sleep,” she urged him, to which he complied.
With a small nod, he set his head in the crook of her neck and draped his arm over her waist, a quiet, “I love you,” leaving his lips.
With a loving smile, she placed a kiss against his head and began toying with his hair once again, the strands sticking from in between her fingers. Once Sol’s breathing had slowed down and his form relaxed in her hold, she finally whispered, “I love you, too.”
They say young love is a rite of passage. They say it’s fresh and light, it’s wading in the shallows of a swiftly flowing river and letting the deliciously frigid water take you wherever it flows. They say young love comes easily.
But they don’t tell you youth is not a remedy for pain. They don’t tell you the cold of that water burns your skin, too — it leaves your fingertips numb and kisses your palms an angry red. They say “it’s just puppy love,” but they don’t tell you puppies grow into wolves.
+
You’re eighteen when you first meet Semi Eita, and he’s twenty-two. It’s not a highly significant age gap, but it’s noticeable enough.
“She’s a baby,” he says, eyes grey as the southern sea and just as unforgiving. Though he’s young, the weight of an iron giant rests on his slender shoulders.
“She’s talented, Semi,” says Akamine, tone wheedling. He fiddles with the lapels of his coat — it’s Italian, all cream silk and bronze buttons. “She’s capable.”
Twenty year old Akamine Keo is a trust-fund kid, born into the arms of an oil empire he’ll someday fall heir to. He’s charming, clever, and sweet, with distinctly expensive good looks, fine features and black hair like raven’s feathers. He also happens to be your boyfriend.
“That means nothing,” Semi says, peering into your face. An uncomfortable chill tickles the back of your neck as you fight the urge to look away. “There are toddlers who can shred Led Zeppelin, but they’re not musicians. They’re puppets controlled by overzealous tiger moms. They can’t take the heat of the real industry.”
“I can take the heat.” Your words bleed out heavy and sharp, a rough gash through the palpably thick tension. Fingernails leaving painful half-moons on your palms, you clench and unclench your fists down at your sides. “And I can sure as hell shred better than any toddler.”
For a split second, surprise flashes across Semi’s face, only to be quickly replaced by a wry smile. “Brave.”
You stare at him, lips sucked in and eyes narrowed as Akamine slings an arm over your shoulders and presses a kiss to your temples.
“See?” he says with a laugh. “She’s talented, capable, and brave.”
“Well,” says Semi, drawing the word out. He cocks his head, giving you one last hard once-over, before extending a hand for a firm shake. “We’ll see. I’ll give you two months. A trial.”
You accept this compromise, returning the shake. Semi’s still skeptical, you can tell, but you make a vow to yourself — you’re about to blow this sonuvabitch out of the water. As Akamine crows in delight, Semi’s eyes don’t leave yours.
Good luck, they seem to be saying. You’ll need it.
You smile, and he smiles back.
I won’t.
+
Semi’s a phenomenal bassist. When you’d first started dating Akamine and he’d just joined Semi’s band, he could scarcely shut up about it — “His name’s Semi Eita, and I swear he’s got magic in those fingers, babe.”
Well, Semi Eita’s about to be dethroned, because your fingers are magic, too.
For those two months, you’re the band’s lead guitarist, and you pass Semi’s test with flying colors. It takes a couple weeks to fall into step with the other guys — Semi on bass, Akamine on drums, and a quiet college kid called Yasuda on keys — but you’re a quick study, and soon you’re a cornerstone, expertly weaving searing arpeggios of dashed dreams and fiery hopes up and down the band’s underlying tunes.
(You should’ve seen it coming.)
You and Semi somehow become co-songwriters. He has a knack for melodies, and you have a knack for lyrics. Akamine doesn’t seem to mind the long hours you spend in Semi’s company, working in a whirlwind of messy notes and empty energy drink cans — he trusts you.
(Sometimes you feel like maybe he shouldn’t.)
“What do you think of this?” Semi says, idly twirling a pencil between his fingers. It’s 10pm on a Friday night, and you’re stretched out on his couch, inhaling chow mein from a greasy paper box. “For the second verse, I mean.”
“Lemme see,” you say around a mouthful of noodles, snatching the paper from his hand. You furrow your brow. “‘Tear me open like a scarlet letter, cruelly addressed ‘return to sender…’’ Jeez, Semi. Who hurt you?”
Semi scowls. “It’s a breakup song, isn’t it? It’s supposed to hurt.”
“You might consider being a little more… subtle,” you suggest, offering him a fortune cookie. He takes it and sets it aside.
“Heartbreak isn’t subtle,” he says, shooting you a look that speaks of throbbing phantom wounds. “It cuts deep. All the way down to the heart. Hence the name heartbreak.”
“Wow. I had no idea,” you say drily. You swing your legs over the couch and sit upright, snatching his pencil. “I just think we should tackle this with nuance, not just write another ‘eff you’ ballad.”
“This world can always use another ‘eff you’ ballad,” Semi says humorlessly, resting his chin in his hand.
You regard his suddenly silent demeanor as he stares, unseeing, out the window. It’s dark outside, and it’s a darkness that speaks less of peaceful sleep and more of emptiness.
You sigh, nudging him with your foot. “What was her name?”
“What?”
“Her name. This demon of a girl that hurt you so badly.”
For a moment, it seems he’s going to argue, to deny ever being afflicted with something so childish as lovesickness. Then he runs a defeated hand through his hair and shakes his head, laughing. “You’re too curious for your own good.”
You wait. There’s a brief, uncomfortable silence as Semi chews his lip.
“...Her name was Aiko,” he says finally, inspecting his nails with a faux nonchalance. “Smokin’ hot. Met her in music school three or so years ago, I think — she was a TA, a few years older than I was.”
“Older women, huh?” you tease. This is new territory — you’re dipping a toe into the forbidden arena of flirtation. A shadow of guilt creeps into the back of your mind as you think of Akamine, but the bright light of Semi’s crooked grin swiftly flushes it away.
“Yeah,” he says, leaning over to flick your leg. “I don’t date babies like you.”
“Maybe you should consider it,” you say, unthinking. Semi stares at you, eyebrow raised, and you flush, frantically backtracking. “Not me specifically. I’m just saying — well, I mean, ‘cause this Aiko chick was such a bad time and everything.”
“If you have a crush on me, just admit it,” Semi says. You’re sure it’s meant to come across jokingly, but the way he’s eyeing you twists your stomach into a pleasurable knot. Then he sighs, leaning back on his arms. “She was a great time, actually. It’s the ending that sucked ass.”
The question lingers at the tip of your tongue, hesitant like an ill-trained acrobat, but before it even attempts the leap, Semi answers.
“It burned.” He looks straight at you, and you can taste the bitterness in his words. “It burned, and not a day goes by that I can’t remember how awful it felt.”
+
That’s the first of the many secrets you trade with him.
Later that night, you tell Semi about your first kiss, about how the recipient smelled like Old Spice and tasted like chapstick, how he walked you to your front door and introduced himself to your mom. About how he took your virginity six months later, and how you soon realized there are some things in life you don’t get an exchange receipt for.
Semi tells you his favorite color is green, and that outer space scares him more than anything. (He doesn’t like thinking about life in other galaxies because he can hardly handle thinking about life right here.)
You tell him you like milk tea with 75% sweetness, and he promises he’ll take you to his favorite cafe sometime. (“Not a date,” he assures you, and you internally scold yourself for wishing it was one.)
He says he once accidentally kicked a stray cat while trying to find a volleyball he lost in the bushes near his house, and that’s why he considers himself a cat person now: as repentance. (He has a pet cat called Haru, and he shows you a picture — Haru is small and black with bright yellow eyes. You say he’s cute, but Semi corrects you: “Not cute. Fierce.”)
You say you used to wish life had a restart button, so you could turn back time and dance through each year without making a single mistake.
Semi says he still wishes that.
(Another thing they don’t tell you is how secrets are really currency. Secrets can’t help but pay for familiarity, and familiarity often leads to something more.)
+
It’s a couple weeks later when you have your first gig. It’s at a bar downtown, and Yasuda nabs fakes for you and Akamine, though you don’t plan on drinking. Not much, anyways.
(Speaking of Akamine, your relationship with him has grown strained over the past month. He’s stretched himself thin between the band and his business degree, and you — well, whenever your phone pings, you can’t stop hoping it’s from Semi.)
Five minutes before show time, Semi turns to you, eyes wide. “We don’t have a band name.”
“What?”
“We don’t have a band name.” He looks around, frantically trying to draw inspiration from something in the dimly lit bar. “Quick, think of something.”
So you think for a moment, chewing your inner cheek, before reaching out and tugging on Semi’s sleeve. “Paper.”
“Paper?”
“Paper.”
Paper is fragile, it’s thin, it’s easy to come by. But it’s also a world of potential on one sheet, a story waiting to be written.
When the bar owner walks onto the stage and introduces the band, you know you’ve made the right decision. And from the glittering smile Semi flashes you before nodding at Akamine to count you in, you know he thinks so too.
The show goes on without a hitch, and even though the bar is far from packed, you’re just as proud as you’d be playing in a stadium of screaming fans. The air smells of stale whiskey and fresh beginnings, and as your fingers dance up and down your Gibson’s fretboard, you hear colors — rich teal, smooth mahogany, creamy gold and silver brighter than the stars. Akamine keeps the rhythm like a war drum, and Semi, as always, is perfect. Yasuda, doubling as the main vocalist, sings until his voice gets wonderfully low and raspy, keyboard taking some of the heat as he grins back at you, mouthing how badly his throat hurts.
You’re sweaty when the set’s done, and Akamine buys you a drink, giving you a quick, half-hearted kiss and a tired smile.
Akamine’s always been kind to you.
“I gotta go,” he says, squeezing your hand. “Essay due tomorrow at ten.”
He looks so genuinely sorry to leave, you almost feel guilty.
+
You’re packing up your amps into the back of Semi’s van, alone in the parking lot save for the moon many miles above, hanging bright and full in a clear sky. The moon has seen all your most indulgent sins, and she’s going to see one more tonight.
“You did well.” Semi heaves the last of the equipment into his truck before turning to you, wiping his palms on his jeans. “Consider me impressed.”
“Why, thank you,” you say, giving him a mock bow. “So glad I’ve finally managed to impress the Semi Eita.”
He regards you for a moment, arms crossed. A small sigh escapes his lips. It’s both a sigh of resignation and one of anticipation.
Then, in one smooth motion, he steps close, reaches out, and pulls you close by the waist.
You stare up at him, all too aware of the heat radiating from his body. His skin is burning, and his cologne is different from Akamine’s — it’s not expensive, it’s not a multilayered, deep, woody scent. It’s cheap, the sort of cologne a struggling musician can afford, but it smells of home.
“Forgive me for what I’m about to do,” he whispers, sliding a hand up your jaw to cup your face. His hair glows silver and ghostly under the streetlamps.
“And what are you about to do?” Your voice is deadly quiet, and your chest feels a deathly cold despite Semi’s proximity, refusing to thaw as you await his answer.
“Kiss you absolutely senseless.”
Semi’s never been one to make empty promises, and right now is no exception. He presses his lips to yours and you immediately melt into his arms, suddenly craving him and only him. You’re not entirely sure how you’ve managed to avoid devouring him whole up until this point, because he kisses like Eros, full of pomegranate seeds and crimson blossoms, of days spent in clandestine bliss. He kisses like a man on death row, desperate and longing, hands squeezing your waist like your body is his only anchor to life itself.
Semi Eita wants to be a rockstar, but right now he’s just a boy kissing a girl he’s bound to fall deeply, inexplicably in love with.
When he finally breaks away, you’re breathless, staring up at him like you’ve just seen an angel. Your hands are still curled in the front of his shirt, you’re still standing on tiptoe, lips just inches from his.
“Semi…” You swallow hard. “Akamine’s a good guy… I can’t.”
Semi tenses his jaw, taking a finger to lift your chin. “Then why are you looking at me like that?”
Your voice is barely above a whisper. “Like what?”
“Like you’re hungry.”
He’s got you there.
You’re standing on a balance beam splitting two vastly different worlds. On one side there’s the known: Akamine and his bright, blue-eyed optimism, his willingness to shoulder burdens he shouldn’t have to. There’s his sweet touch and soft kisses, his firm words of reassurance and his sunny laughter shedding light on your hidden depths.
The known is comforting. It’s familiar.
But on the other side… there’s the unknown. There’s Semi Eita in all his scalded glory, his sharp tongue and headstrong determination. There’s his burning touch, his fingers leaving scorch marks on your cheek and his lips depositing glowing embers in your mouth, ready to ignite at a single inflammatory word. There’s his moonstone enigma, the shadow underlying his every sentence like smudged eyeliner.
The unknown is frightening, almost overwhelmingly so… but there’s something in you, something willful and terribly thirsty, that draws you to this unknown and the possibility of knowing it.
“Because I am.”
And you grab his face and pull it down to yours, impatient, frustrated by months of dancing around that painfully tangible attraction, that magnetism — finally, you allow yourself to fall, hurtling through a chasm of fallen stars and ancient suns, hanging on to nothing but Semi and his carefully guarded secrets.
You kiss him hard, pouring your soul into his mouth, all your youthful doubt and hope. You knot your fingers in his hair, and he pulls you into his chest, pressing your body so close it’s as if he wants to make it a part of himself.
And when you part for the second time, chest heaving, you know you’ve fallen completely, entirely, without a doubt.
where the road then takes me
Prompt: Law of Surprise Relationships: Geralt/Jaskier/Renfri, Geralt/Renfri, Geralt/Jaskier, Jaskier & Renfri Rating: T Warnings: None Summary: When Jaskier runs into a pack of wild dogs while searching for his lost hen, he's lucky that Geralt is nearby to save him. But he has nothing to repay the witcher with except the Law of Surprise, and who do they find upon returning to the farm, but Jaskier's sister, Renfri, back early from marauding?
For @witcher-rarepair-summer-bingo!
(ao3 link in reblog)
--
Jaskier, eighteen, had grand dreams.
They were little more than dreams, unfortunately, because seeing as how he and Renfri had grown up fending for themselves, stuck in a tiny village on the border of Creyden, he didn’t have much opportunity to go to school or learn to play the lute or anything, really, besides tending to the farm while Renfri got… freelance work elsewhere. That was all he cared to know about it—she would leave, and return home every couple of weeks with a decent bag of coin and blood-spattered clothes, which Jaskier would bitch about cleaning. She made enough for them to live, though not comfortably—Renfri had kept him fairly sheltered, but he knew that they were one of the poorer households in town.
Which was why Jaskier only dreamed of traveling the Continent, singing songs and weaving grand tales for the commonfolk. Instead, he was stuck here chasing down their old hen again, after the coop had blown down in the storm for the fourth time. Henrietta was a sneaky fucker, already gone by the time he woke up in the morning. He cursed but pulled on his boots and stumbled out into the cold morning air to look for her.
He cursed all the way to the edge of the forest, where she’d apparently disappeared into, judging by the tracks and the few scattered feathers he found. “Damned hen. Ought to just eat you and be done with it,” he muttered, pulling his cloak tighter around him before heading into the forest.
He followed her trail as the sun slowly rose, stopping when he heard barking in the distance. Fuck, he hoped that was the hunters’ dogs—he hadn’t thought to bring a knife to defend himself with. Whatever it was, he trudged onwards, because they couldn’t afford to lose a hen. Renfri would kill him if—when—she found out.
And then he heard it—familiar squawking, accompanied by those same barks, louder. He crept closer and saw exactly what he’d feared—a pack of wild dogs circled Henrietta, one of them darting in every so often to snap at her slashing claws. She was fending them off pretty handily, actually—Jaskier knew how vicious she could be firsthand.
But the dogs would no doubt attack in force soon, and then she’d have no chance. Without thinking, Jaskier picked up a rock and threw it at the nearest one, hitting it square in the nose. It recoiled and turned its attention away from Henrietta, which was exactly what he wanted.
Unfortunately, it turned its attention towards him, which was exactly what he didn’t want. “Oh, fuck,” he spat, and turned tail as the pack gave chase.
He dashed over tree roots and fallen logs, blind stupid terror coursing through his veins. He had no plan beyond don’t get caught—and he could only run for so long before tiring. He threw a glance backward and saw that they were gaining on him—and fast.
Not looking where was going, he was taken completely by surprise when he slammed into something hard, bouncing off it and landing with an oof on the mossy ground.
Dazed and still half-blind with fear, he didn’t even notice that he’d slammed into a person until they moved, stepping over him and taking on the dogs with an easy confidence, sword swinging with preternatural force.
Two swords, armor, incredible speed and fighting skills? As the man finished dispatching the last of the pack and turned around to reveal mutated cat eyes set in a heavily scarred face, Jaskier realized who the man was. He sucked in a sharp breath.
The witcher sheathed his sword, holding out a hand as if to calm Jaskier. “It’s alright,” he rumbled, voice full of gravel. “I’m not here to hurt you.”
Jaskier picked his jaw up from where it had dropped. “I know that,” he answered, getting to his feet and half-heartedly brushing the dirt off himself. “You’re a witcher.”
“I am. Usually fight more dangerous things than wild dogs, though. Also don’t usually see unaccompanied kids running around being chased by them.”
“I had to get their attention somehow. Henrietta was—wait, Henrietta!” Jaskier, remembered, abruptly spinning on his heel and dashing back to where the pack had cornered her.
“Wait!” the witcher called from behind him, but Jaskier paid him no heed.
He was gratified to see that while he’d been running for his life, Henrietta had seen fit to begin making herself a nest right in the same spot. “Oh, aren’t we cozy?” he grumbled, creeping closer in an attempt to grab her. He was almost upon her when the witcher ruined it, crashing through the underbrush behind him and sending her clucking away just as Jaskier pounced.
Jaskier sighed and turned to face the witcher, who at least had the good grace to look a little guilty. The guilt soon disappeared, though, when Jaskier rounded on him and began to lecture. “Now look what you’ve done. It’ll take me ages to catch her,” he complained, watching as the witcher’s eyes grew incredulous.
“You risked your life for that scrawny thing?” the witcher asked, amused disbelief coloring his tone.
“That scrawny thing is probably the most valuable thing we own, so yes,” Jaskier snapped. He couldn’t stand it when out-of-towners looked at him like that, like he was a stupid farm boy who knew little more than dirt and chickens. Which, to be fair, he didn’t, but it wasn’t as if he wanted it that way.
The witcher’s face cleared to something more akin to understanding—thank the gods it wasn’t pity. “Then I suppose I owe it to you to help catch her,” he said, and in the blink of an eye he’d snatched Henrietta up. Jaskier accepted her into his arms somewhat stunned.
“Thank you,” he eventually managed to stammer. The witcher said nothing in return, and they stood there for a long, awkward moment, before Jaskier realized he was probably waiting for something. “Oh! I don’t—I don’t have anything to pay you with…” he trailed off, recalling all the old adages, that witchers never worked for free. Fuck. Renfri wouldn’t be home for days if not weeks still, and the only coin he had he needed to save for the market day after tomorrow.
The witcher began to speak—what it was he was going to say, Jaskier didn’t know, but he interrupted as an idea struck him. “But I can offer you the Law of Surprise!” he suggested, recalling the ballads of children promised to witchmen. “We’ve a bitch due for pups soon—perhaps we’ll return home and you’ll find yourself with a companion to warm the long nights on the road!”
“Hmm,” the witcher replied, but it wasn’t a no, so he figured that it probably meant he wasn’t about to be forced into the witcher’s debt. Humming, he led the way back to the farmstead, the witcher a silent, hulking protector at his back.
Once they arrived, Jaskier was quick to secure Henrietta in the barn, where normally there would be pigs, but now, after sickness had taken their only sow, there was only dust and hay and the occasional mouse. He left Henrietta to her mouse hunting and led the witcher to the cottage, throwing open the door, excited to see what surprise he might find.
“Jaskier, why the fuck have you brought a witcher home?” asked Renfri, perched on the table and cleaning underneath her fingernails with one of her many knives.
Jaskier paled. “Renfri! You’re—you’re not meant to be home yet,” he choked out.
“What, you’re not happy to see me?” she drawled, eyebrows knitting together. Jaskier, helpless, threw a glance back at the witcher, who was wearing a thunderous expression. Shit.
“I—not in this case, no,” Jaskier said tersely. “Fuck.”
“Some welcome,” she said faux-calmly, hopping down off the table. Jaskier recognized the tenseness in her form that spoke of a predator preparing to pounce. Sure enough, she lunged a moment later, her knife held a half-inch away from the witcher’s throat. Jaskier yelped. “Did he hurt you, Julek?” she asked, not taking her eyes off the witcher’s face.
“No, nothing of the sort, now put that down,” Jaskier hissed, tugging ineffectually at her arm. “He saved me, in fact, and…”
“And?” Renfri asked lowly.
“…and I may have promised him the Law of Surprise in return,” Jaskier finished all in a rush, wincing. “I swear, Ren, if I’d known…”
“That’s the thing about surprises,” the witcher interjected. “But you needn’t worry. I have no plans to claim your—sister?” Jaskier nodded. “As I said before, I need no payment.”
Renfri lowered her knife, and Jaskier breathed a bit easier for it. Renfri was a formidable fighter, but Jaskier doubted even her strength against a witcher. If a fight had broken out, he’d have had to—well, not help, because he was rather useless in a fight, but it was the principle of the matter.
“I suppose I could do worse for myself,” Renfri mused, looking Geralt over critically.
“Wait you’re—Renfri, he said he wouldn’t claim you, you don’t have to.”
“And what if I want to?” Renfri answered. “He seems a decent sort. And not too hard on the eyes, either.”
The witcher, looking uncomfortable, stood there and said nothing.
Jaskier threw his hands up. “You’re insane. And you!” he said, turning to the witcher. “Are you agreeing to this?”
“The life of a witcher isn’t well suited to… companionship,” the witcher replied, face twisted. “Walking the Path is difficult.”
“And if I promise that I can handle myself?” Renfri asked, twirling her knife in one of the many tricks she was proud of. “I’m no stranger to the road. It’s Jaskier you’d have to watch out for.”
“I resent that,” Jaskier said mildly, mostly out of principle. But the prospect was too exciting to dwell on it for long—was Renfri truly proposing that they set out with a witcher? “Ren, do you mean it?”
“If your witcher is fine with it, then I don’t see why not,” she replied. “What do you say, witcher?”
“Geralt,” the witcher corrected her. “If we’re to travel together, you ought to at least know my name.”
“Geralt,” Jaskier repeated. It rolled off the tongue wonderfully. “Oh, this is so exciting! I’m going to write so many songs, just wait,” he gushed. “The Witcher and the Shrike—I can hear it now.”
Renfri pulled him out of his thoughts with a cuff to the shoulder. “Ow,” he said mildly. “Wait—you are planning on sharing, right?” he interjected. “Because, I mean, look at him.”
“Am I a toy to be shared among siblings?” Geralt asked, raising an eyebrow.
“Is that a no, you don’t want to sleep with both of us? Because I’ll respect that, I will, but also, not to objectify you or whatever, but dear gods please, I think my poor heart might break if I didn’t get to fuck you at least once.”
“Jaskier! Leave my Husband Surprise alone,” Renfri said, shoving him away. “Go get packed. Essentials only!”
“Alright, alright, I’m going,” Jaskier placated, raising his hands in surrender. “Don’t get up to anything while I’m gone, you lovebirds.”
As he left, Geralt turned to Renfri. “Is he always like this?”
“Yeah, he’s chronically stupid. Gets it from our father.”
“Remind me again why I agreed to this?”
“Don’t know, but it’s too late now. You’re stuck with us, witcher,” Renfri replied, looping an arm around Geralt’s.
Geralt made a show of sighing, but in truth, he wasn’t annoyed as all that. At least it would make life more interesting.
I would very much appreciate an analysis of the reasoning and song placements for you Macavity playlist whenever you get the opportunity.
- Signed, a big fat music nerd
Putting this guy under a cut cuz it'll be long! I'm just going brief with these but if there's one in particular you want a deeper look at I can def do that. Also I didn't proofread this before posting so i'm sorry for any typos ksjdbgksbdg
Dead Souls- It's a combination of the title and sound for this one. It kind of encapsulates that cool guy vibe that he was born with, that Tugger was born with too. Kind of slow, steady and strong. It covers his general essence, the sort of beat of his heart if you will, and then the lyrics speak to his loneliness as a child and the allure of giving into his worst impulses. He's just lost, looking for support which he unfortunately doesn't find.
How Soon Is Now?- Same idea here. He's left the tribe, he's on his own and every bit of positivity has disappeared. He's hopeless and tired of feeling "other" and not getting what he feels he deserves from those around him so focuses on building an empire instead, exploring crime and taking what he wants, because it won't be given to him. Essentially, he's tired of waiting and tired of trying to make things work at home. "I've already waited too long," if you catch my drift. And "I am human and I need to be loved," is self explanatory: All he wanted was to be accepted for who he was, and that wasn't happening, so he left.
Hungry Like The Wolf- He's hungry. He's hungry for power, for fame, and unbeknownst to him until he lays eyes on Demeter, love. He's ignored that bit for a while now and focused on taking things to fill the void instead, but when he meets her he's just blindsided with this desperation to have her. He's determined, and at this point he is quite a hunter. He knows how to read people, how to break them apart, to get what he wants. She doesn't make it easy. Honestly she makes it a little hard for him to think straight, and always does. He feels like a beast chasing after her, and luckily for him, he catches her.
Candyman- Demeter has fallen for his charms and for the bits of him that are still, whether he admits it or not, Jellicle. She's intrigued by him and has no idea of what she's going to endure by letting herself fall into his arms. And he has no intention of hurting her, never does, but to any bystander it's clear that he's dangerous, and that things won't end well. He can't help his nature, and she can't change it.
Don't Fear The Reaper- Whether he admits it or not, he's a reaper, and she starts to understand that, at least a little, but it doesn't bother her. They come to know each other better, shared their experiences and pain and believe they're a true match. They've been hurt and lonely and turn from strangers to "us against the world," or and naively think that they'll always be together. He hasn't fallen yet, but he will.
The Same Deep Water As You- He is at his core, really a sad figure. He thought Demeter would fill the void, and she does fill some of it, but not all, and in the quiet hours of the night between heists and fights and celebrations of his power, he crumbles in her arms and clings to her. But they're both starting to realize that maybe it's not for the best. Maybe they're not what each other really needs, and he hates that idea. It's her, or nothing, he thinks. He'll be damned if he lets her go.
The Killing Moon- This is really the shift. He's killed others now, and finds more joy in violence than anything, excepting Demeter's company. It's a kind of latent realization on Demeter's part of what she's gotten herself into, and how nothing she could have done would've let her avoid any of this. She's disgusted, and somewhat terrified, but knows that he won't let her go, and she still loves him despite it all. It's a cruel twist of fate. He's determined to keep her, reminiscing on their meeting and how he fell in love with her. Honestly the memory of it is sweeter than being with her now, and it's killing them both.
The Promise- She keeps distancing herself from him, and he keeps trying to get closer. He's given her so many promises, but at this point, they don't matter anymore. It's really upsetting, to see what they've become, and part of him knows it's his fault. He feels guilty for it, but he can't stop doing what he does, because he doesn't know how. Who is he without power, without bending others to heel? A scared, damaged tom, and that's worse than anything. He can't face his own reflection in the mirror, and that's his, and their, downfall.
Monsters- He's angry at her, she's angry at him, though they won't show it to each other. But he's not an idiot. He can see how her soft gazes have turned hard, how she doesn't lean into his touch anymore, and she watches him grow more violent day by day, until he well and truly is a monster. His frustration at her turns into frustration at everyone else, and finding new ways to be cruel to his enemies, and even his subordinates, is the only way he can redirect the pain it's causing him. But they're still hanging on by a thread. She's too scared to leave, and he's scared of her leaving. But there's no saving it, even if she cares about him and always will.
Vantablack- His romantic gestures used to delight her, comfort her, but now any attempt from him just makes her feel dread. It absolutely ruins him that she's not comfortable with him anymore, and when he tries to make things like they were, it's useless. He's let too much darkness consume him, and he can't hold on to her anymore. It makes him insanely angry, and he lashes out at others twice as hard as a result. He blames her for it all too, when she runs away, and leaves him all alone.
Not Just A Name- He really thought she was his match, that she was the one cat who understood him and wouldn't let him down. She made him believe that things could be good, that he could find happiness, but he didn't realize just how much of himself he would have to change for that to happen. He refused to change, couldn't bring himself to, and instead surrendered to his worst impulses, and now she's run from him. He wasn't who she thought he was, and she clearly didn't know him as well as he thought she did, and quite frankly, he's just hurt. (Even if it was all his fault, he doesn't see it that way.) "Made me someone I wasn't, it's not just a name." He didn't, and can't, meet her expectations, or be what she needs, and that might be the only thing he's ever experienced that really breaks his heart. And she won't ever give him another chance.
The Less I Know The Better- He tells himself he doesn't need her, that he doesn't want her back. He tells himself he couldn't care less if she rots out there on the streets without him, but really, he still cares. He still wants her. He's haunted by her absence, and wants nothing more than her at his side again. She really was the last tie to his humanity, his morality, and he's lost without her. He'll beg for her, if he has to. He needs her back, but she's moved on, and ironically, was pushed into his brother's arms.
Loner- He constantly flips between thinking of stealing Demeter back or burning everything to the ground. He steals and fights and commits crimes just because he can, just because there's nothing else to do, or feel, without her. He's entirely closed off. When she was there, one of his henchcats could sometimes ask him questions or have somewhat easy conversation with him, but nowadays that's an impossibility. He has completely put on a mask and only barks out orders, reprimands, or toys with others to pass the time. He's just this angry, lonely figure. He hardly feels like a person at this point. Without Demeter, he has no direction, and no connections.
Gimme Shelter- The more time passes, and the more he realizes he can't get Demeter back, the worse he gets. He's intentionally nefarious at this point, and hateful. He resents her too, even though he still loves her. If he ever gets his paws on her, he isn't sure if he'll caress her or choke her. It's a bitter, cruel world, he has remembered, and the only way to survive it is to be crueler than everyone else around you.
I'm So Afraid- He truly feels as if he's been alone his entire life, and loneliness is the root of his problems. He felt lonely and misunderstood as a child, driven away. He feels lonely without Demeter, without her love. Really, if he tried hard enough, he could come back from his darkness, maybe try to find a new life, repent for his mistakes, but he's too scared. He's afraid of losing himself, knows he already has, honestly, and there's nothing to do about it. Macavity is big and strong and clever and intelligent but underneath all that he's always just been terrified of emotions, of abandonment, and of himself, and whatever bits of him that are Jellicle, burried deep down, are disappointed, and it kills him. He hates that he still has those feelings, and wants to drown them, or lock them away forever. He'd rather feel emptiness than any of this anymore.
Lord Of This World- At this point his name is beyond infamous. No one remembers the more tender parts of him, and no one relates to him. He's been branded a villain, by everyone, and so assumes the role with a sick sense of pride. He knows he's not to blame for how he is, no matter what the others say, and won't let them judge him. He's in charge. He is a stronger, better leader than his old tribe could ever have, and this is his world. He bears that burden alone, but believes it was always his to bear, just like it was his burden to fall in love with Demeter and endure so much suffering for her kiss on his lips.
Double Dare- He invites his old tribe and in fact everyone around him to self reflect. They're not blameless, they're not better than him, and they're not as strong as him. They haven't survived what he has, haven't built something from nothing, haven't overcome his odds. He thinks everyone around him is weak, even Demeter, for not sticking by him He's angry at her for being with the Jellicles, and believes they've killed the stronger bits in her, the twinge of darkness that she also had, and allowed them to be miserable together. He won't be fooled, won't be changed, even at the cost of her, now. Either she'll be brave enough to come back to him, like he believes she should, because she was made for him, or he is truly the only brave cat in the world. And if that's the case? Then so be it.
-------
So yeah. This man is fucking delusional. Yes, he had a rough start to life, but it was his own arrogance and fear that prevented him from becoming a better person or adjusting. He turned to dark coping mechanisms instead, and ended up ruining the only positive relationship he's ever formed for the sake of remaining comfortable. If he wasn't so frightened of judgment and change, things could have gone very differently. But nope. Now he's hated by everyone, including the object of his affections, and he'll be sitting alone atop the cold throne he built for the rest of his life. He's really just driven by impulse and desire, despite his masterful approach to crime. It's an interesting juxtaposition. Someone so powerful and intelligent is really just constantly pushed and pulled by his emotions. He's one second from spiraling out of control at all times, and that's what makes him really dangerous more than anything.
Chapter 57
  Sorry for your loss.
Four words that Katie was already sick of hearing. Sorry. What did people have to be sorry for? It wasn’t like it was their fault. Still, she acknowledged the sympathy that came her way, completely automatically, almost emotionlessly. She barely registered the fact she had spoken to Fury and Hill, two people who had been dead five years ago, she didn’t have the energy to wish she could knock Ross’ head off his shoulders and had no idea how long she had walked what was left of the compound, maybe an hour or so? Who cared anyway? She simply did what people asked her to do to help out, whilst Steve hurried around organising everyone and barking orders.
Nevertheless, when the crowds of Emergency Services, Armed Forces and Support Staff that had flooded the Compound left, she suddenly felt alone and found herself in their compound apartment, which had miraculously survived bar from a smashed window in the living area. She glanced around before she headed to the bedroom and slumped heavily on the large bed, staring at the wall.
Just staring.
It was quiet, but her mind was anything but. Her brain was screaming all sorts of stuff at her, a jumble of words and sounds and visions, but she couldn’t really understand any of it.
She simply felt broken.
“Katie?”
A voice broke through her reverie and she looked up to see Steve in the doorway.
“Hey.” She gave him a soft smile. “Pepper just spoke to Happy, the kids are fine. All three are fast asleep. He’s going to wake them in a few hours and bring them back.” “No.” Katie shook her head. “I want him to bring them now.” “Honey its almost two am.” He said, and Katie frowned. Okay, so she’d been walking around a little longer than she thought, then. “Let them sleep. We can go, get cleaned up and…” “Plan how we tell them their Uncle is dead.” She swallowed, gazing back down at her hands.
Steve took a shaky breath. He felt beyond guilty. Guilty that he got to go home to his kids because of the fact that Tony didn’t. Steeling himself, he made his way to the bed, sat down next to his wife and wrapped his arm around her as she lay her head on his shoulder.
“What’s everyone doing?” She asked softly.
“Rhodey is in with Ross and President Ellis…” “Ellis is here?” She looked at him, frowning.
Steve nodded. “Rhodey’s giving him a brief on what’s happened. They’re gonna need to put an announcement out so…”
“Suppose it was probably a shock everyone re-appearing again.” She reasoned, quietly.  “What about everyone else?”
“Well Lang, Parker and Bruce already left.” Steve explained as his hand gently rubbed up and down her arm. “And there’s a chopper on the way to take Pepper home and a couple more following to take the rest of us to the Tower. The roads are completely jammed, apparently there’s impromptu parties taking place all over. Might be a while before we can get back through to Brooklyn.” The thought of partying seemed alien to Katie, but as she thought about it, it wasn’t surprising. People would be greeting lost loved ones, celebrating the fact the world has returned to normal.
For them anyway.
“Clint will want to go home.” Katie nodded. “He’ll be desperate to see Laura and the kids.” “We’ve got a jet on the way for him so he can go as soon as possible.” Steve soothed, dropping a kiss to her head.
If ever Katie was grateful for having a husband with Military organisational skills it was now. He’d literally thought of everything. She closed her eyes and nuzzled into him even more, seeking out comfort like a child, before Steve reached around and pulled her onto his lap, holding her close to him, as they sat in silence.
****
“I guess this is strange for you too, huh?” Steve said as they made their way into the Tower. “Yeah you could say that.” Sam shrugged, “One minute everyone was in Wakanda and then the next minute it was just us, and the jungle had changed.” He paused, scratching his head. “Then that Strange dude turns up and tells us it’s been five years and we needed to go fight one last time.”
“Has it really been that long?” Bucky asked and Steve nodded. “So now you’re older than me?” He grinned. Steve chuckled as Katie gave a small smile. “Shut up.”
They made their way into the elevator and FRIDAY greeted them, somewhat forlornly, as Katie asked for their floor. The elevator fell silent as it scooted upwards, pinging open. Katie stepped out first, followed by Wanda then the men.
“So, where do you want-“Bucky began but he stopped dead causing Sam to bump into him.
“What the hell, Frosty?” he spluttered, frowning as he followed Bucky’s eye line, his own eyes growing wide as he saw what Bucky was staring at. Wanda was also gazing, her mouth open, and Steve immediately knew what they were looking at- the large framed photo on the wall in the living room.
Even though their home was in Brooklyn this was still very much their apartment. Katie sometimes stayed if she had a big meeting, or on occasions they would crash here when they grabbed a rare night out in Manhattan.  And it was for that reason that the photos in the apartment had been updated over the past five years as their lives had moved on. The wall their friends were gazing at contained two prints. The first was one taken by Katie at the hospital when Jamie was hours old, the same photo also adorned the wall in the lounge at home and it showed Steve asleep in the chair by her hospital bed, hair unkempt, shirt crumbled, stubble on his chin as his baby son was clutched to his chest as they both slept. He remembered the moment like it was yesterday, one snapshot moment out of God knows how many, all of which the three people stood in front of him had missed.
The second was from last year, and showed Emmy with Alex as they sat on the sofa at home, both grinning at the camera.
“You…”  Sam gasped as Wanda and Bucky turned to them, mouth hanging open.
Steve nodded, “Yeh, err, did no one tell you?” He asked, rubbing his neck.
“No.” Bucky breathed.
“But then it never really cropped up in conversation, you know, on account of us being in the middle of a battle and all.” Sam said, a little sarcastically and Wanda thumped his arm before she turned to Katie.
“How old?” She asked softly.
“Emily is sixteen next week.” Katie said, looking at the photos smiling softly. “We adopted her after the snap, it’s a long story.”
She then looked at Steve who smiled, knowing she was allowing him the task of revealing their boy’s name to two of the men he was named after.
“And Jamie’s three.”  He turned to look at Bucky and Sam.
“Jamie?” Bucky asked thickly.
“Or to give him his full name James Anthony Samuel.”
Bucky and Sam exchanged a look, the pair of them floundering for words.
“Cap,” Sam swallowed, his eyes misting over. “Wow, I’m so happy for you guys.” “I can’t wait to meet them.” Wanda beamed.
“You might regret saying that.” Steve chuckled. “Emmy’s a sass bag and Jamie can be a handful. He’s only three but he’s stubborn, opinionated- don’t even say it.” He pointed at Bucky who had opened his mouth to comment, a grin spreading across his handsome face.
“They’re awesome.”  Katie spoke softly as her eyes moved round the apartment and fell on a photo of her and Tony taken at her wedding. Suddenly she couldn’t be there anymore. Excusing herself she headed into their bedroom where she flopped onto the bed, now feeling utterly overwhelmed, still struggling to make head or tail of her emotions. She should have been celebrating like everyone else in the streets was doing. Their friends and trillions of other people were saved, but she couldn’t because again, just like the other week when they had grieved for Natasha, there was one person who wasn’t coming back.
Her brother.
Taking a deep breath, she shed her boots before she stood up and peeled off her cat suit before she made her way straight into the en-suite.
She turned the shower on as hot as she could stand, an attempt to sooth the pain she now felt in every inch of her body. But whilst some of it was bruising from the multiple blows she had taken, some of it was coming from inside. The pain of losing her brother was physical, and hard. Closing her eyes she lay her head against the tiles, allowing the water to beat down on her, lost in her memories. “I got full marks on my English essay Tone!”  Her 10 year old self grinned up at him as he leaned against the car, looking as effortlessly cool as ever.
“Get you, you little brainbox!” He ruffled her hair. “That’s awesome, so awesome in fact I think we need to stop for pizza and a shit load of ice cream on the way home. Sound good?” “You’re the best!” She beamed as he took her pink back-pack off her and dropped it into the trunk as she climbed into the passenger seat of his BWM.
 “Oh no, you are not going out wearing that!” Tony stod up as she walked into the living room of the house. Sixteen year old Katie rolled her eyes.
“Tone its boiling hot outside, what you want me to wear? A pair of jeans and a fucking coat?” “Anything but that!” He scoffed, looking at the rather short denim skirt. “Young Lady, I can see what you had for breakfast!”
“Oh bite me, Tony.” She shot back, hearing the guffaw that Rhodey gave out from the sofa before she shot out of the front door to greet her boyfriend who had just pulled up the drive.
She was eighteen…, cruising along the cliff in Malibu, laughing, her hands on the steering wheel of her convertible bug, Tony in the passenger seat sipping an iced tea as the pair of them sang as loudly as they could to Drops of Jupiter- their song.
“Mr Rock and Roll over there, listen to you!” She laughed as the song finished and it changed to AC/DC ‘Thunder’.
“If you ever tell anyone about my love of Train I will kill you.” Tony looked at her over his sunglasses and she snorted, grinning.
“I’m so telling Pepper.”
“Err you know I can still pull my funding.” He glared “You can kiss goodbye to going to Oxford…”
And speaking of Oxford, at twenty-one, she was there, accepting her first class honours in English Literature and Mythology. As she smiled for the camera, she could see Tony stood up in the middle of the hall, whistling before he punched the air. “That’s my girl!” He yelled “Katie Maria Stark. That’s my girl! No I won’t sit down…what did you just say?” And he began arguing with the person behind him.
At twenty-six she was crying, tears of happiness as the ramp on the aircraft carrier opened to reveal her brother. His hair was longer, he looked thinner but he was alive. He was barely at the bottom before she flung herself at him, not caring that his arm was a sling.
“Hey Kiddo.” He said softly as she buried her face into his neck.
“You fucking asshole!” She sobbed, “Next time, you ride with Rhodey, you got that?”
“Trust me, there will be no next time.” He chuckled as she pulled back. “Afghanistan is a shit hole.”
A year later she was crying again, sobbing even, as Tony sat with his arms around her, gently shushing her as she sat up in her bed. “How could he do that to me Tony?” She sniffed, her tears dampening her brother’s t-shirt as he rubbed her back, laying his head against hers. “I thought he loved me…but…” “He isn’t worth your tears, Kiddo.” He sighed “Grant Ward doesn’t deserve them, or you. No one ever will, you got that? No one will ever be good enough for you.”
 And then she was walking up the aisle towards her future husband, her arm linked tightly around Tony’s. He pressed a kiss to her head.
“Remember, just because I’m giving you away doesn’t mean I won’t kick his ass if he ever hurts you.” Tony mumbled and she snorted, turning to look at him. “I love you to the stars and back, Katie, remember that…”
Like she could ever forget. Tony hadn’t been to everyone’s taste, hell, at times he hadn’t be hers, and they’d been estranged for two years. But Katie had never, not once, stopped loving the man who had brought her up as his own. Her brother and father all rolled into one.
She finished washing her hair and stepped out of the shower, the tears still not arriving. She began to wonder if there was something wrong with her. She’d cried more when Natasha died. She pulled on a towel robe that was hanging behind the door and began to dry her hair, squeezing the water out of the long strands.
“I remember when you used to do that for me.” She grinned, watching Tony as he sat with Morgan between his legs on the lounger round the pool at her Brooklyn home, rubbing the little girl’s wet hair ferociously with a pink beach towel, making the three year old cackle with laughter. I remember…but Morgan won’t.
And then the cry ripped from her chest, like someone had reached down her throat and pulled it from the very depths of her heart.
***** Steve made sure the guys were settled in a spare apartment a few floors down, the three of them opting to share, none of them particularly wanting to be alone.  Making his way back into theirs, he headed straight to the bedroom and heard Katie turn off the water to the shower. With a groan he stripped off the top half of his uniform, dropping the grubby item to the bed. His eyes were drawn to the silver star in the middle, and he ran his fingers over it, the material torn in places having seen better days, much like him.
With a deep breath he reached to pull off his compression shirt, but before he got chance, he heard a noise from the bathroom, a primal, raw, broken scream that chilled his every bone. Quick as flash he crossed the room and pushed open the door to the en-suite and found his wife slumped on her knees on the floor, screaming and crying uncontrollably.
“He’s gone! He’s gone, he’s gone!” Steve had known this was coming and it broke his heart that he could do nothing to help, nothing to take away the utter desperation and pain and anger his wife was feeling. Without hesitation he dropped to his knees and she turned to him, fisting her hands around his top as he pulled her close, one arm round her back, the other in her hair.
“Let it out,” his voice was croaky as he rocked her, gently stroking her hair as his cheek pressed against the top of her head, “I got you, sweetheart, I got you.” How long they stayed there for, with Katie screaming and crying over the soft sounds of his soothing, Steve had no idea, but eventually her sobs became sniffles as she regained some form of composure.
“Steve,” she managed to stutter as she pulled back to look at him, “Tony’s gone, he’s gone, why? Why did he have to do that? There had to be some other way!” “Oh, Doll.”  Steve’s voice cracked, his own heart ached with grief and sympathy and love as he dropped a kiss to her forehead, pulling her onto his lap as he sat back on the floor, making no attempts to move her. He buried his face into her hair, his own sobs catching in his throat.
“All my life Tony has been there.” She whispered gently as kissed her head. “Even when we were apart those years I knew that if I needed him, he would be there…but now…he’s gone and I don’t know what to do.”
“You do what you always do.” Steve whispered softly as he pulled back, cupping her face in his hands, wiping her tears with his thumbs. “You get up, you dust yourself off and you act like the amazing, strong, beautiful woman you are. My wife, my baby momma.”
“I don’t know if I can. Katie spluttered.
“Yes, you can. You’re the strongest person I know.” He implored her, sniffing a little.
“I don’t feel strong.”
“You won’t.” He shook his head. “Not yet. But I’m here. Okay? And we’ll do it together.”
Katie looked at him for a moment before she moved once more to bury her face into his t-shirt again, simply breathed him in. His warmth and familiar smell, even if he wasn’t as fresh as he could be after the exertion of battle, was a comfort, a balm to her broken soul.
Tony was gone, she knew that, but she wasn’t on her own. She’d never be on her own as long as she had Steve.
****
“Don’t be sad Momma.” Jamie whispered, as Katie’s tears tickled down her cheeks, her son on her lap. TO her right, Emmy sat on her father’s, despite her age meaning she was normally way past that stage, as she cried into his chest, his arms gently cradling her. “Uncle Nee isn’t on his own.” “What do you mean, baby?” Katie asked, sniffing as he played with a strand of her hair.
He looked at her with his baby blue eyes and shrugged, as if the answer was obvious. “Because he’s with Auntie Nat-Nat.”
“Yeah,” Katie stuttered, a soft sob escaping her. “You’re right. But I’m still sad, but you don’t need to be worried about that okay?” Jamie nodded, before he blinked and frowned. “I can kiss it better, like you kiss my ouches better.”
Katie smiled as he leaned up, connecting his lips to hers with a loud smacking noise.
“That’s it, you just made it all okay.” She smiled, wiping her eyes.
“When can we go home?” Emmy asked, sitting up slightly, her voice croaky.
“Soon, I promise.” Steve looked at her. “I think we’ll stay here for tonight, your mom and I both need a rest.”
Emmy nodded “I expect kicking alien butt for hours takes it out of you.” Steve snorted. “A little.” “You did it though. Everyone came back.” “Yeah, and on that note,” Katie picked up, “we have some people we’d like you to meet. That’s if you’re feeling up to it.” “Is it them? Bucky, Sam and Wanda?” Emmy asked, her wet brown eyes opening wide.
“Yeah.” Steve smiled. “And, if it’s ok with you, we thought we could all have breakfast together.”
“Pancakes?” Jamie asked hopefully and Katie nodded, dropping a kiss to his head.
“Pancakes” She affirmed.
“Now?”
“Do you ever think about anything but this?” Katie chuckled, prodding his tummy. He pondered for a second.
“Legos.” he said, nodding. “I think about my legos sometime.”
Emmy snorted and Steve let out a little laugh “Pancakes and legos eh, son?” he reached out and ruffled Jamie’s hair. “What more could a three year old want?”
****
Manhattan was in utter chaos and going out in public was the last thing Steve or Katie wanted for fear of being mobbed. However, the kitchens in the tower were well stocked and after sending Emmy to forage what she could, it was easy for Katie to whip up a batch of batter and throw some bacon into a pan.
She set Emmy to work chopping some fruit, and never one to miss out, she stood Jamie on a chair in front of her and gently guided his hand as he held the whisk to stir the batter.  Katie was literally grabbing the ladle to drop the first load into the pan, when the door to the apartment opened and Steve’s voice carried in to the kitchen.
“Hey guys?” Jamie squealed in excitement and Katie moved so he could get down. He shot out of the kitchen, barrelling into the lounge where he skidded to a halt by his dad and gazed up at the three strange adults in front of him.
The first thing that hit Bucky was just how like Steve the little boy was. Stocky, bright blue eyes and a shock of dark blonde hair.
“He looks like you.” He smiled, nodding to Steve as Katie stepped into the room with Emmy and smiled.
“Jamie, Emmy, this is Bucky, Sam and Wanda.” Steve introduced them all, as Emmy raised her hand shyly in greeting.
Meanwhile, Jamie simply gazed up at Bucky, his attention focussed directly on his metal arm and Bucky suddenly began to worry that it would scare him. He was attempting to move it out of view by standing side on, until Jamie stepped forward with all his usual boldness and pointed.
“Is that metal?” “Jamie.” Steve spoke, his tone soft. He couldn’t scald his son for being curious, but at the same time he had seen the apprehension in Bucky’s eyes. Apprehension that had now turned to amusement.
“Yeah it is.” Bucky chuckled, crouching down so he was eye level with his namesake. He held his left hand up, wiggling the fingers. “Wanna touch it?” Jamie reached out and placed his palm against Bucky’s prosthetic and grinned, “Cool,” before he looked up at Steve. “Can I have one?”
“Absolutely not.” Steve shook his head with a grin.
“You think that’s cool you should see my wings.” Sam crouched down next to Bucky, smiling at Jamie.
“You have wings?” The little boy’s eyes grew wide “I want…”
“No!”
“Fine I’ll just ask Santa.” Jamie shruggged and Sam let out a loud laugh.
“I like this kid!” he grinned, standing up.
“You can have him.” Steve winked, as Bucky stood up straight and grinned. “Saves us sending him to The Children’s Prison.” “Morgan told me there’s no such place.” Jamie looked at his Dad and Steve let out a sigh. The threat of the Child Prison was their biggest bargaining chip when he was being naughty. Especially as the naughty step wasn’t an option, because the first (and last) time they tried that they caught him climbing up the staircase and sliding down the bannister.
“I told you titch, it does.” Emmy gave a dramatic roll of her eyes. “I lived there before mom and dad adopted me. And all they give you to eat all day is slugs and slime…” Steve shared a look with Bucky and let out a loud laugh.
“Don’t.” Bucky shook his head with a grin.
“You gave Becca nightmares for days with that story!” Steve laughed as he recalled Bucky telling his sister about a hole in the ground where bad kids went. “She wouldn’t go near a manhole for months!”
“I can still feel the blow round the ears my Pa gave me.” Bucky automatically reached up to rub at the back of his head. The well natured chatter continued as they made their way into the kitchen. Steve went to brew the coffee as Sam, Wanda and Bucky took seats round the table with the kids. Occasionally he caught the odd snippet of their chat as Jamie told Bucky about his toys at home, informed Sam all about his friend at day-care, whilst Emmy was busy talking to Wanda about school and what she wanted to do in the future. But all the time Steve had one eye on his wife as she stood, silently, cooking enough pancakes to feed a small army.
Which, to be fair, was probably what they would need with two super soldiers and a hungry three year old to feed.
Moving over towards her, he slipped his arms around her waist and dropped a kiss to her cheek.
“You ok?” He asked, before he sighed “Sorry, stupid question.”
She chuckled and shook her head. “No it’s not stupid, I know what you meant. And honestly, no. I’m not. Not really. But I will be, in time. I hope.”
Steve dropped another kiss to her cheek and winced as a loud “GET A ROOM!” sounded across the kitchen and he turned to glare at his son. Bucky and Sam exchanged a gleeful look as Steve raised his hand and pointed at Emmy accusingly. “That was not me!” She scoffed, indignantly “It was Bucky that told him to say it.” “If this is the impression you have on my kids after all of fifteen minutes, James Buchanan Barnes, then I’m going to have to seriously consider letting you near them again.” Katie shook her head as she dropped the plate of pancakes into the middle of the table.
“Why did you just call him James?” Jamie asked, frowning
“Because my name is James too.” Bucky answered for Katie.
“No, it’s Bucky.”
“He only gets called James when he’s been bad, bit like you, pal.” Steve chuckled, placing Jamie’s plate of food in front of him. “Now eat that, and then you can show Buck your legos.”
“My legos are here?” Jamie said, grinning.
“Yeah they’re in your bag, we brought them from the compound.” Steve answered, dropping a kiss to his son’s head.
“What the hell is a Lego?” Bucky asked, his face contorted in confusion. The room feel silent as all eyes turned to the man who glanced around, suddenly feeling very self-conscious.  “What?” ****
Rhodey called later that morning to give them a heads up that the President would be addressing the nation later that afternoon, and to also inform Katie that they were talking about honouring both Tony and Natasha posthumously. Katie had merely snorted, not entirely sure what Tony would have said about any of that, until Rhodey made her laugh about the last time he had received an honour, getting stabbed with the pin by the Senator awarding it to him,  Senator Stern.
Who had turned out to be HYDRA.
True to his word, just as he had done five years ago, President Ellis’ address rang out across the nation at precisely three that afternoon, on every TV and Radio channel there was.
“I know there is much speculation surrounding the events of the last 24 hours, and it is for that reason I find myself addressing you all once more, with regards to the Decimation. Only this time I am happy to greet you all with much better news. Thanks to the brave actions of the Avengers and countless others who fought in a ferocious battle Upstate, the Vanished have been returned to us in the same state in which they left.
But it isn’t without cost.
Unfortunately, I have the very sad job of confirming to you all that the rumours are true. Tony Stark and Natasha Romanoff both lost their lives in the mission to bring everyone back. My sincere condolences and thoughts are with the rest of the Avengers, in particular the Rogers and Stark families, and I’m sure I speak for the entire world when I say we will be forever indebted to the two fallen heroes for their brave sacrifices which ensured that friends and families across the globe could be reunited.”
Katie glanced down at her hands as she took a deep breath, the tears falling into her lap as Steve’s arm curled round her shoulder, sniffing a little as his own eyes were once again misted over.
“I know you will all have many questions, some of you will be at a loss as to what to do, and unfortunately I don’t have all the answers, so it is for that reason, if I may, I’d like to address those who have been returned to us.
Over the past five years the world has become a very different place to the one you knew. People lost entire families, friends, husbands, wives, boyfriends, girlfriends. We had to rebuild, make sense of living without you. So I ask you , please be patient with us whilst we try once more to make sense of events, only this time they are a lot happier as you have all been returned to us. Don’t take it too personally if we seem a little, well, astounded.”
Ellis paused, wiping his eyes as he smiled, licking his lips.
“Thank you all, God Bless America, and God Bless the Avengers.”
****
That night fireworks exploded across the skies all over the country. The current occupants of the tower sat on the roof watching the symphony of colours and explosions as it light up the Manhattan sky-line, Jamie opting to sit on Bucky’s knee instead of his father’s, because of course Bucky was now his favourite person on the planet.
But Steve didn’t mind, well, not too much anyway.
The next few days passed them by in a bit of a blur. They moved back to the house in Brooklyn. Sam and Bucky came with them. However, surprisingly to Steve (but not to Katie) Wanda opted to head to Clint’s after the archer called and offered her a room. Steve’s time was divided between speaking to the UN, various people in the senate and government alongside Rhodey as they started to make plans to help those people who had returned because reversing the snap had raised a whole cacophony of different problems, just as Tony had predicted it would.
Some of the vanished had come back to find their wives or husbands had re-married. Others found themselves with no-one left as they’d passed away. Some found themselves homeless as new occupants had moved into their apartments which had been left vacant. Two of those people were Peter Parker and his Aunt May, who were now residing in the Tower until Katie could find them somewhere permanent.
And then there were the kids who had been adopted, suddenly finding themselves with two sets of parents.
Katie, on the other hand, had no time or energy for anything other than planning Tony’s funeral with Pepper, and a service of sorts for Natasha with Clint. Natasha’s was to take place first, a small ceremony at Clint’s farm where they would be planting a red maple tree in her honour. Tony’s, however, was slightly more tricky.
Her brother had, at one point, led a very public lifestyle and naturally (even if unfairly) he was attracting the most public interest. They’d been approached by President Ellis, who had asked if they would be open to a full, state public funeral. Katie had been horrified at first, until Pepper had snorted and reminded her that the Old Tony would have loved the attention and fuss.
But New Tony wouldn’t.
Which was why, in the end, they compromised and chose to celebrate the two sides to Tony’s huge personality.
For the Genius, Billionaire, Play-Boy, Philanthropist they would hold a service at St Patrick’s Cathedral and for the husband, father, brother, friend they would then hold a more intimate wake at the lake house, where his ashes would be scattered eventually.
It was draining, emotionally and physically, so it was no surprise to Steve that Katie was constantly tired and a little irritable and the Solider felt the harsh side of her tongue on more than one occasion. But he never bit back, he knew how she was feeling. He’d had to do it with his Ma. Instead he listened to her bounce ideas off him, helped with the organisation where he could, and simply comforted her, holding her close whilst she cried when she needed to.
A week post the return of the Vanished, people seemed to have reached a half-way point, so to speak, between what they had been like before the Snap and what they had become post. But what was noticeable to all of them was that they were persistently mobbed in the street, people wanting to thank them constantly.
Jamie found the whole thing hilarious, waving to people as he walked with his Father one morning to the play-ground. Steve, however, after half an hour had returned home because he couldn’t stand it anymore.
“It’s mad.” He shook his head with a sigh, flopping onto the sofa next to her. “I mean…”
“It’ll die down.” Katie yawned. “Just gonna take a while. People still don’t know what to do. Hell, half the time I don’t know what to do.” She took a deep breath, the back of her hand pressing to her mouth as a queasy feeling washed over her for the umpteenth time that day. “You still feeling crappy?” Steve asked, watching as Jamie sat on the rug with his trucks.
“A little.”
“You thrown up again?” “No.” She shook her head “I don’t feel sick anymore just a little funny, drained almost. I don’t think it’s anything serious. Probably just the stress of all the organising and stuff.”
But as she said the words something in her mind clicked and she sat bolt upright, Steve giving her a curious look.
“What’s wrong?”
“Bruce’s Snap.” She whispered. “The one where he brought everyone back.”
“What about it?”
“What if it brought everyone back?” “Well we know it did…” Steve frowned, not following her line of thought.
“No I mean,” Katie took his hand and placed it on her stomach, “everyone.”
It took Steve a second to cotton on, but when he did he blinked, looking into his wife’s eyes, a faint buzzing ringing in his ears.
“Shit.” He spluttered out.
“Language.” Jamie reprimanded him almost immediately, but both parents ignored him.
“I didn’t,” Steve swallowed, “I mean, I didn’t even consider that a possibility. Do you think it has?”
Katie took a deep breath. “I dunno, I mean the first snap took it away…”
They stayed still for a moment, simply looking at each other, both thinking the same. If one snap had taken their baby, the second snap could quite as easily have brought it back.
“I think I need to go to the store.” Katie muttered.
**** Less than an hour later husband and wife were stood in the bathroom looking down. Down at four different tests. Four different tests that all told them the same thing.
“I can’t believe it.” Steve whispered, his arms wrapping around his wife from behind as he stared down at the test in her hand.
“Me neither.” She whispered, turning to face him, tears in her eyes.
“I’m gonna be a daddy, again.” His hands fell to her hips, blue eyes shining as she gave him a smile, the tears falling down her face.
“And I’m gonna be fat again.” She spluttered, a watery laugh. There was a pause, before Steve’s face cracked into a huge grin and he pulled her to him. She wrapped her arms round his neck and he hugged her close, the pair of them laughing through their tears.
“I like you fat with my kid.” Steve pulled away, wiping the tears that were trickling down her face with his thumbs. She smiled and returned the gesture, brushing the back of her hand over his wet cheeks.
“I love you. So fucking much.” He whispered softly as he dropped a kiss to her lips.
“I love you too.” Her voice croaked before Steve pulled her close once more, his huge arms holding her tightly to him, as he breathed her in, his face pressing into her hair.
And for the first time in a week, Katie’s heart felt a little less broken.
doki doki todoroki
synopsis: where todoroki’s first love blindsides him and he feels like the whole class is leaving him out of the loop.
word count: 1.8k
genre: fluff, fluff, and more fluff
warnings: just todoroki being a clueless baby
a/n: hello! aaaa this is entirely self-indulgent, but it’s my first post! i saw “doki doki todoroki” float around here somewhere and then this happened hjsdhjdhj. anyway, hope you enjoy!
Tumblr media
He brushes it off the first time it happens, wrote it off as adrenaline from today’s sparring.
He brushes it off the second time. It was just a harmless scare after all, no shame in that.
He brushes it off the third time, the odd timing soon forgotten in favor of resuming his studies.
Todoroki doesn’t see the correlation for a while. How it was after seeing your exhilarated smile in the middle of a hard fight, after hearing you laugh once Mina startled him, after watching the triumphant smile on your face grow once he explained the problem to you.
He notices it the fourth, fifth, sixth time. Understandably, he’s confused. No amount of education or training would’ve prepared him for this. Nothing would’ve, other than hard-earned experience that he never got. Looking it up (as he found himself doing a lot these days the more he socialized) only earned him the definition of tachycardia and a grocery list of possible diagnoses ranging from anxiety to heart disease.
So much for the internet.
The ringing of the lunch bell pulled him out of his “research”, and he filed the thought away for later as he slipped his phone back into his pocket.
Later becomes three weeks.
Todoroki’s lost count at this point of how many times his heart suddenly went haywire, thudding against his ribs and sending blood rushing through his ears. How is world suddenly narrowed to just you whenever you spoke to him, and how he wanted to hear your voice again even though you had just stopped speaking. He finally drew the line once Midoriya pointed out his state of disarray at lunch.
“Todoroki-kun, are you sick? Your face is really red,” Midoriya had his chopsticks halfway to his mouth when he paused at the sight of Todoroki staring listlessly at his soba. Unbeknownst to him, Todoroki was too busy listening to you laugh at whatever Uraraka and Iida were talking about to focus on his soba. Hell, he couldn’t focus on anything lately and he had no idea why.
“Hm? Oh, yes, I’m fine.”
“Are you sure?”
“Yes.” No. He doesn’t voice this, and instead lets his Quirk pull the heat away from his cheeks for him as the air chills around him. Midoriya keeps watching him like he doesn’t believe him, but returns to his own lunch anyway.
“Hey, Todoroki, pfft- you have to listen to this. Iida just-” You don’t wait for his answer. You don’t have to. Todoroki finds himself hanging on to your every word anyway, smiling to himself (oh, the tiniest smile compared to yours. He doesn’t think anything will compare) as you struggle to recount your conversation without dissolving into giggles, Iida admonishing you for your loud laughter with an embarrassed flush.
Whatever this feeling is, he doesn’t mind, but he would like to know. He doesn’t notice Uraraka and Midoriya curiously watching the exchange, food forgotten. Nor does he notice Mina giggling with Hagakure as they nudged each other over the seats, dragging any of the class they could into their little whisper circle. The bell rings, and he already wishes you could’ve continued the story.
Later, you promise. He holds you to that.
Kaminari slings an arm over his shoulders in the locker room as they change into their hero costumes for afternoon classes, with Sero on his other side, and he stumbles from both shock and the added weight on him, his boot half-dangling from his foot.
“So, Todoroki-kun~” Kaminari’s lilting tone floating in from his right immediately sends his guard up, and he stared at him warily.
“How’s spring feeling for ya?” Sero continued from his left.
“…Isn’t it autumn right now?” Why were they talking about spring in the middle of October? Todoroki was too busy staring at Sero like he’d grown a second head to notice the collective silent groan ripple through the locker room.
“Oh my god, he really is clueless,” Kaminari whispers, Sero nodding along with a dumbstruck expression. He side-eyes them as he tugs his boot on the rest of the way, unamused. Clueless about what?
“Will he be okay?” It was Sero who spoke this time, completely ignoring the fact that they were having a conversation right over his head.
“I don’t know, man, he should be, right?”
“I’m literally right here. Did something happen?”
“A-Ah, nothing, nothing, just… checking up on you, you know?” As socially inept as he was, even he could recognize from a mile away that Kaminari was a terrible liar.
“…Why?” Okay, now he was really confused. He looked around the room to see if anyone could give him any hints, to no avail. Kirishima was too busy facepalming to notice his confusion, Ojiro was suddenly very interested in tying off his gi, and both Tokoyami and Bakugou were completely ignoring their antics. In a last attempt to figure out what the hell was even going on, he turned to Midoriya… who was trying to desperately look anywhere else other than at him. Something was up, and if Kaminari was involved, he didn’t have a good feeling about it.
“Y-You know, uh…” Kaminari was floundering for an answer, and sighed in relief once Iida came in to announce that they had five minutes to be ready. The pressure disappeared off his shoulders and Todoroki finished putting on the rest of his costume, the deep sense of unease tugging at the corner of his mind. There was something he wasn’t picking up on, and it felt like everyone but him knew.
He brushed it off to focus on class. Today was sparring day, after all, and Todoroki was partnered up with you. Maybe he’d see that smile again. The thought of it made fire lick at his fingers during the spar much quicker than usual.
He wasn’t disappointed, his heartbeat pounding in his ears even as the adrenaline fizzled out.
Tumblr media
Tomorrow morning finds him face-to-face with a grinning Mina and an overexcited Hagakure outside the classroom before class starts, along with the answers to his plight way sooner than he expected. They had called out to him and, before he knew it, he was cornered against the window with their too-wide smiles beaming up at him, hungry for the romance gossip they had been chasing after all year. Or, well, he was pretty sure Hagakure was smiling, at least. Mina, on the other hand, resembled the Cheshire Cat too closely for his liking.
“You like Y/N, don’t you, Todoroki-kun?”
“I don’t see why I shouldn’t?” To say he was confused was an understatement, but there’d been a lot of that lately so he just came to accept it. “Y/N is a good person with an impressive Quirk, so-”
“No, not like thaaat!” Mina wailed, and Todoroki blinked owlishly at the two girls as they both lamented the “densest pretty boy of UA”. Their words, not his. Did… did he say something wrong?
“Like what, then?”
“Ro-man-tic-al-ly!”
Todoroki bluescreened.
“Ro…man…?”
“Like, do you always end up looking at her whenever you’re in the same room?” Hagakure was practically vibrating from excitement, “Do you always want to listen to her or be near her? Or does your heart go ‘doki doki’ whenever you’re with her?!”
“Doki…doki?” Todoroki‘s brain, still rebooting from earlier, struggled to process the onslaught of information Hagakure was slamming him with. So far, however, all the answers he came up with were ‘Yes. Yes. A million times, yes’. “I… guess something’s been wrong with my heart lately? I looked it up and it said it was nothing to worry about, so-”
“Something’s not wrong, dummy! It’s love! And Y/N likes you back!” Mina exclaimed, and both her and Hagakure squealed as they celebrated finally having their first taste of high school romance, clasping hands and cheering.
“Doki doki Todoroki!” Hagakure cheered, Mina parroting her as they rode the high of their excitement. Meanwhile, Todoroki stared dumbly at the two girls in front of him, the dots slowly connecting in his mind. Everything was happening way too quick. And you liked him back? Wait, is that-
“Is that why Kaminari and Sero asked me how I was yesterday?”
“Ugh, that Kaminari~! He can’t even be subtle!” Todoroki could hear the pout in Hagakure’s voice, and Mina sighed and nodded in agreement. Well that answers that, at least. Now for the other million and one questions he had...
“So… what am I supposed to do now?”
“Confess!” Came Hagakure’s immediate response.
Well, that makes sense. Now that he has a grasp on what he’s feeling and he knows that you feel the same, it’s only logical that he should make them known.
“Okay, where is she?”
“In the classr-”
“Nuh-uh, hold it,” Mina stopped Todoroki from barging into the classroom, and he stared down at her, confusion mounting. Wasn’t she super excited just two seconds ago? What happened now?
“Minaaaa!” She ignored Hagakure’s impatient wail and poked him in the chest.
“You can’t just go in there and confess in the classroom in front of everybody!”
“…Why not?” He just had to tell you, so better sooner than later, right?
“Oh jeez, okay, um,” Mina pinched the bridge of her nose, trying to think of a way to explain this to easily the densest person she had the pleasure of knowing. And she knew Kaminari, for Christ’s sake, “It isn’t as romantic if you just go in there and blurt it out in front of everybody, and it puts her on the spot too, would you want that?”
No, you hated being put on the spot. He shook his head and Mina sighed in relief.
“Okay, so, what you’re gonna do is…”
Tumblr media
“Did you need to talk to me about something, Todoroki?”
Ah, there it was again. Could you hear his heart beating out of his chest from where you stood?
Classes had ended for the day and Mina had instructed him to confess after school at a specific spot (much to Hagakure’s chagrin, but she eventually agreed that it would be more romantic this way. Not like he knew what romantic looked like.) So, here he was, veering off your usual course from the dorms to this spot Mina had pointed out to him. It was where the trees broke just enough so the sunset could peek through the leaves. As inexperienced in, well, everything as he was, Todoroki had to admit Mina knew what she was talking about.
“Todoroki?”
The words he was told to recite sailed out the window the moment the time came, the light of the sunset casting you in a warm glow and God this wasn’t fair-
“…I like you.”
Oh, shit. Did he say that? Okay, yeah, he did. Oops.
He almost regrets it, but then he sees your lips bloom with a smile and the world goes quiet.
“I like you too, Todoroki.”
You crushed him in a hug and Todoroki wrapped his arms around you, smiling as he felt your own heart racing against his. His heart beating a mile a minute didn’t sound too bad anymore.
As long as it beat for you.
[Image Description: A screenshot of a reply from a user named @mickybloginb379 . The text written is, “Miya Twins as foxes and maybe Fox Kita too? Kita finding Shoyo first and repeatingly visiting which leads to the Twin’s getting curious, and circling around shoyo’s legs at the same time :)” End ID]
I got carried away OTL. This may have been influenced by me watching too much NatsuYuu
Hinata was not pleased with this situation.
Pressing his back to a a withering tree, his eyes darted around as a shiver passed through his body. The graveyard was quiet, although the tranquility that some found when cleaning the tombstones was evidently not present within Hinata.
A breeze broke the eerie stillness, sending a few leaves aloft, which then skittered across the ground whence gravity recalled them. Hinata whimpered a bit.
“I just need to clean up the grave and place and offering. Clean and offering. Clean and offering...”
“You can’t clean a grave from behind a tree.”
Hinata screamed, backing further against the tree, the bark digging into and scratching his skin through his shirt. “Wh-Who—Ghost?!”
From the white robes to the silver-and-black hair, the guess wasn’t unfounded.
“Nope.”
Hinata could’ve cried from relief.
“Are you lost?”
“N-no. I think....”
It was clear as day that the other was unamused by his momentary incapability, rolling his eyes and grasping Hinata’s wrist softly to tug him away from the tree. Hinata’s cheeks burned. Despite his mild mortification, he felt a wash of gratitude flood him.
Eventually, Hinata was stood before his father’s grave, and his palm was pressed snugly against the silver-black haired person’s. Their fingers loosened their clasp, but didn’t unwind fully, not until Hinata heard the jingle of bells and a breeze brush his side, his hand suddenly empty.
And then, with another gust and another jingle, the other returned, a broom and dustpan firmly in his grasp. “I’ll bring something to clean the headstone with. Sweep the ground, for now.”
Hinata really shouldn’t have been surprised that this person was supernatural, honestly. His features were far too serene and eyes too present for him have been just a normal person around his age, after all. Not that Hinata knows very many normal people.
The two of them cleaned quite efficiently, and the other, introducing himself as Kita Shinsuke, even brought incense for Hinata to light. Hinata offered him some of the food his mom had made as the offering for his father, but Kita said it wouldn’t be right to eat it if it wasn’t intended for him.
“Then if I make you something, will you eat it? I wanna thank you for your help! You really saved me today!”
“I’d be willing to eat what you make, although I won’t say I like it if it doesn’t taste good.”
Hinata smiled determinedly, “I’ll make the best lunch ever, I promise!”
Kita, despite his strong inclination of doubt, couldn’t help but smile back, albeit nearly unnoticably.
Kageyama was thankfully not home for the first five attempts at making Kita a lunch box, although he did bear witness to the latter half of them, which was still unfortunate. Hinata’s mother would have scolded him, but she and Natsu were too busy speculating about why he was making the lunch and occasionally strolling in to assist him.
“It’s done!” Hinata cried after the twelfth try. Kageyama dutifully kept his mouth shut, for once, eyeing Hinata’s hands and steering the redhead to the bathroom to clean up.
“Kita-san!!!!” Hinata called out to the cemetery, his bright aura dispelling the eeriness of the location. “Kita-saaaaan!!!”
“You shouldn’t shout in a place like this. It’s rude,” Kita murmured, his hand settling over Hinata’s mouth. “Will you behave?” The redhead nodded, and Kita slowly removed his palm. “So, what’d you need?”
Hinata proferred a box wrapped with a yellow cloth dotted with cats. “I brought you lunch, like I promised!”
Kita looked a little taken aback, and Hinata wondered if he was imagining the way Kita’s hair seemed to twitch. “You remembered?”
“It was only like, two days ago! How could I forget? Especially when Kita-san saved me from ghosts and stuff—”
“—That didn’t happen. There wasn’t a single ghost—”
“—it’d be ungrateful of me if I didn’t make good on my promise!”
Kita’s almost couldn’t handle watching Hinata break out into a grin. His eyes felt strained, like he was staring directly into the sun, and yet he couldn’t bring himself to look away. Softly, he let the corners of his lips push up, and he accepted the box gingerly.
“Let’s eat elsewhere,” he offered, urging Hinata to hold onto him by the shoulder. He jumped, one foot landing before the other onto a hill of long grass overlooking flower fields. A forest stood off to the right, and a single tree sat behind them, providing a bit of shade.
Hinata wasn’t quite prepared for the sudden transport, stumbling to his knees before gazing around in wonder.
Kita helped him up. “It’s pretty, isn’t it?”
“Yeah!”
Eventually the two of them settled to the ground, Hinata watching anxiously as Kita opened the lunchbox.
Kita paused, observing Hinata’s jitters. “It’s not poisoned, is it?”
He shook his head, Kita breathing a chuckle.
“It was a joke. Thank you for the meal.” His hands pressed together in a momentary prayer, and then he lifted a single octopus-hot-dog-weiner to his mouth. Hinata watched him intently, and Kita knew before it hit his tongue that Hinata put in a lot of effort when making the meal. Just that info made it delicious, but once he’d swallowed it, he eagerly sought more, trying some of the riceballs and vegetables on the sides. He saved the fruit for last.
“Is it good? Do you like it?”
Kita nodded serenely, offering an octodog to the redhead. Hinata immediately latched on and slid the octodog out from between the chop sticks. Kita had to avert his eyes, only to spot the bandages wrapping Hinata’s fingers and parts of his palms.
“You’re hurt.”
“Oh, yeah! I accidentally chopped my fingers, and burned them. I stopped hurting myself as much after the fourth try, though!”
“How many tries did you take?”
“Twelve!”
“Sounds like you wasted a lot of food,” Kita commented. At that, Hinata pulled a pouty smile on his face that was a bit too adorable to not gain amusement from, though Kita consoled him with a ruffle of his hair.
They descended into a comfortable quiet.
After ten minutes, which. Kita almost wished could have been eternity, Hinata tugged on his sleeve. “Will you let me make you lunch again?” He mumbled, looking up through his lashes.
“I smell food.”
“That’s just because you’re a damn glutton.”
“What was that? You wanna say that again you bastard?”
“If I’m a bastard then so are you!”
Fists flew, the sound of fighting accompanied by shouts and grunts. Kita stepped in just as Osamu bit Atsumu’s calf and Atsumu yanked his hair.
“Why is it that every time one of you speaks, it comes to this? Do you find amusement in wasting your minimal energy on healing injuries that could have been avoided?”
The twins’ ears flattened against their skulls, their big, dejected eyes ineffective against Kita’s bland disposition.
“Sorry.”
“Sorry.”
Kita breezed past them, starting up the electric kettle to prepare himself some tea.
Osamu and Atsumu perked up at once.
“Your steps are bouncier,” Atsumu piped, at the same time as Osamu commented, “You smell like food.” They then made eye contact with each other and pointed, simultaneously saying, “Oh hey, you’re right!”
The two small fox spirits proceeded to prod at him endlessly regarding his seemingly ‘good mood’, and the tiny smile he had as he batted them away seemed to only fuel their suspicions.
“Woah... Tsumu, he’s got more energy, too.”
“Yeah, it’s radiating!”
They likely absorbed some of the stray energy coming off him, growing a little taller. Instead of looking like toddlers, they now were the equivalent size of a six year-old human. It was almost strange to see them this way.
Kita didn’t let his confusion show on his face, though his tail swished slightly, enough to peek out of his robes. His ears also raised off the top of his head, finally, twitching as he considered where the extra energy came from.
Was it the lunch?
“Kita-san, what did you do? Did you eat someone?”
“No, I don’t do things that I don’t let you two do.”
The twins seemed to communicate with just eye-contact, and it was one of those rare occasions where Kita couldn’t quite decipher what they intended to do with the information they had.
Hinata always felt antsy during the moments Kita prayed--just between the “Thanks for the meal,” and the first bite he’d take of the food Hinata prepared for him. This time, Kita brought with him a small snack in exchange for Hinata’s.
“You’ve gotten better,” he commented after a swallow. He always wiped his mouth between bites instead of licking his lips, meticulously keeping the tissue folded in a particular manner. “I think the fried rice could use a bit more salt next time, though.”
“Ah, thank you! I’ll remember that!”
It felt like an escape to spend time with Kita, somewhere far away and unknown. Like a secret retreat, away from all of the other supernatural beings that he contracted, and away from the stress of school and tests and life. Hinata felt like he got more chipper than usual after their picnics.
Unbeknownst to Hinata, the same could be said about Kita. They’d only meet once or twice per week, and yet the silverette couldn’t always keep his smiles at bay even days after their lunches. Furthermore, the surges of extra energy from the meals helped him keep a better eye on his troublesome junior foxes, even allowing them to ‘age up’ when they’d latch onto him.
Speaking of those troublemakers...
“Did you hear that?” Hinata asked him, peering over at a spot in the long grass. “I think someone’s there.”
Kita sighed, brushing off his pants and preparing to grab his companions and send them home. However, before he could begin to walk over, Hinata was crouched in front of the patch where the twins hid, smiling at them disarmingly.
“Are you two lost?”
The silverette joined him with a hand on his shoulder.
“They’re not lost, don’t worry. They’re with me.”
Hinata grinned at them. “You’re Kita-san’s friends? Nice to meet you!”
Their eyes widened just a bit, tails swishing.
Kita knew it was inevitable that the twins would get interested, but he should’ve known that it was going to happen much sooner than he’d have ever hoped.
Days later, Hinata presented two extra boxes, one with a silver-blue wrapping and the other with a sunset-gold. “I’ve brought some for them, too. The little foxes.”
“Atsumu might not eat it,” Kita warned, “Although if Osamu eats first, then he’ll probably get hungry and give in.”
“Which one’s which?”
Kita’s eyes gleamed. “I’ll let you figure that out.”
The twins did not come to spy on them this time, but Kita dutifully brought the lunchboxes to their cabin once Hinata left. As expected, Osamu dug right in, and Atsumu held out as long as he could before giving into his competitive nature. The twins choked on the food in their efforts to finish eating before the other (Osamu won), but when they finished, their bodies were at the approximate age of 13.
Even more impressive than that, though, was that they remained older for a lot longer than they usually do with extra energy, reverting back gradually over the course of a few days rather than the standard overnight regression.
If Hinata’s cooking alone could produce such results, then what would a contract do? ...What would his blood do?
Kita closed his eyes and banished the thoughts before they could fully manifest.
• Part 10 of (?) •
• I really liked writing Kita. I feel like he’d actually really like Hinata, since Hinata’s always been really hardworking and puts in all this effort to be better. I think Hinata would really like that Kita’s attentive and a good listener, so he could ramble endlessly if he wanted and Kita would be content to listen. •
• Also, anybody curious as to why Osamu and Atsumu ‘age up’ and ‘revert’ to a younger state? •
•• Send Asks for more! Feel free to ask about characters and send Headcanons! Or if u wanna just talk Haikyuu/ships, I’m good with that too! :) and for other parts, search the “summoner au” tag on my blog and you’ll find em! ••
