Linux has recently started to become much more mainstream with non technical youtubers switching over to it and have been talking about their experiences in doing so. Among these are:

There's a lot of reasons for it, but the short one is that this october, microsoft will cease mainstream Security patches for windows 10. As a note, this is the shortest support cycle they've ever offered (windows 7 was supported until 2020), and these security patches are installed silently in the background without prompting you, even for a restart, in windows 10. This leaves users with three options:

1. Stick with windows 10, despite the lack of security. - this is a terrible idea, as developers usually stop caring for backwards compatibility with recent updates, and these security patches are often the only thing stopping you from being hacked without any interaction on your end. You'd be surprised by the amount of compromising info you actually have on your computer, and how many times one of those silent security patches saved you from being screwed over.

2. Upgrade to windows 11 - this is a fairly unappealing option for a lot of people largely because windows 11 is... pretty annoying. The new features that are exciting and worth using are extremely buggy and broken. Several existing features have been removed, and the majority of new features are things like AI, crypto and advertising which are constantly pushed on you. Using windows 11 requires you to re-learn a lot of fundamental ideas within previous versions, at which point... many realise that option 3 is more appealing.

3. Switching OS - okay. I am an OG mac hater... but these days, even I can see that OSX is more appealing than using windows is now, because it's just, you know, an operating system. That said, some of windows 11's new features like virtual desktops and tiling are worth using...

Linux' biggest selling point is its customizability. The idea that your system can include as many cool features as you want, and as few annoying unfinished features as you want. Naturally it's also both been getting easier to use, and more capable.

Now that's not to say it's quite as easy to work with as other systems. Switching to linux is a bit like switching to mac, but with none of the guard rails, and if every major mac release was still recieving updates that spiralled off in their own directions. It can be pretty confusing to start with for sure. But it is certainly getting better.

Linux mint continues to be one of the best starting points for newcomers, and for gaming, linux has gotten really easy to work with. But. For other usecases, it can be a bit of a pain still. Specifically, photo editing is probably one of its weakspots, either requiring you to install a beta version of GIMP with multiple plugins, or to run through the grand riddle of figuring out how to install either photoshop or affinity using wine. It can also be tricky to work with more uncommon hardware (though there is a great app called input-remapper that has saved my ass so many times)

And of course sometimes you just encounter something that you need to fix or install and trying to fix it becomes a living nightmare because it feels like you're the first person in the history of the universe to encounter this issue. Tbh, that happens with every system, but especially when you're new to linux, it feels like the esoteric bug gods are targetting you specifically.

The reason is because, starting in macOS Catalina 10.15, which was releasing in 2019, Apple discontinued support for 32-bit apps, entirely.

Starting in macOS High Sierra 10.13 and lasting through macOS Mojave 10.14, Apple would stop you from running 32-bit apps with a warning pop-up claiming the app won’t be supported in future versions. There’s usually an option to bypass this popup on the popup, itself, or by right clicking and selecting “Open” instead of just double clicking.

You can also go even further back if you have an even old Mac, but these operating systems are extremely outdated, and therefore are not very secure to use on a daily driver. Apple tends to only support old macOS versions for two years after a new version is released. After that, the bug and security fixes stop.

Any machine made after 2019 comes with Catalina or higher installed by default and cannot run 32-bit apps. Intel machines can use Bootcamp to Install Windows 10 and run Windows x86 versions of the games, but Apple Silicon Macs are mostly SOL. You’re best luck is trying VMware Fusion or UTM and setting up a Windows 11 ARM virtual machine, but that can be difficult for not-so-advanced users. Virtual Machines also tend to have a fraction of the power of your entire system, so you may encounter performance issues, even on simpler, older games. They also introduce potential compatibility issues, since Virtual Machines aren’t perfect, and neither is ARM Windows’s x86 emulation.

The Sims 3 is also a victim of Apple’s premature 32-bit cancellation. The original version of The Sims 3 sold on discs no longer works and installs. EA rewrote the entirety of The Sims 3 as a 64-bit game on Mac, but the only way to install it is via digital download on Origin (or the EA App whenever that comes out on Mac.) HOWEVER, a lot of mods are permanently broken on the 1.70 update that made the game 64-bit for Macs. All other versions of the game only go up to 1.69 on Origin and 1.67 on disc. Those versions are also 32-bit, only. Windows never got an 64-bit rework like the Mac. As a result, a lot of modders are no longer working on The Sims 3 because of its age, or they don’t care about the 1.70 players because of how few use it.

Also, the 64-bit & Metal version is extremely broken in many ways and has been for over four years. EA released the re-work with many game-breaking bugs and still, to this day, refuses to patch them out.

I use VMware Workstation Player to run a Windows XP virtual machine on my Windows 10 laptop, and Kid Pix Studio Deluxe runs on XP.

VMware offer a free version for personal use (download here) and it runs as a program on your computer. The copy of XP is an ISO from archive.org (download here), and the copy of Kid Pix Studio is a zipped ISO from myabandonware.com (download here) and will need to be unzipped before you try to install. This is the one with the extra programs like Moopies and Stampinator, but to be 100% honest I literally just use it to do the rainbow bouncy lines in the main program, because they are the good kind of sensory overload that works as a mute button for my noisy brain.

How you actually do it:

Once you have installed VMware Workstation Player, click "Create a New Virtual Machine". Select "Installer disk image file (iso)" and click the "Browse" button to find the ISO of XP. You need to use the serial number that was on the archive.org download page, and you can just copy-paste it. It should do most of the install itself, and took about 20 minutes for me, including a couple of in-program reboots and some horribly distorted startup noises the first time.

Also, XP has a native resolution of 800x600 pixels which will be tiny on most modern monitors: you can up it to 2018x1536 by right clicking on the desktop and going to "Properties" and then the "Settings" tab, but it still might not fill the your screen.

To install Kid Pix, run the virtual machine and select the dropdown menu in VMware that says "Player" then "Removable Devices" then "CD/DVD (IDE)" then "Settings". In the "Connection" box on the right, select "Use ISO image file" and click the "Browse" button. This will take you to the file explorer of your actual computer, and you can select the unzipped ISO for Kid Pix. Click "Okay", and then go back through the "Player" then "Removable Devices" then "CD/DVD (IDE)" menus, but this time click "Connect". The Broderbund installer should start up; click through the installer (select "Cancel" when it asks you to register) and you will have Kid Pix in your start menu. Drag and drop to desktop to make a shortcut, but also, when you exit VMware you can just select "Suspend" and never actually quit Kid Pix since that is probably all you will use that particular virtual machine for. I then went back and disconnected the CD/DVD drive, but this might not be necessary.

Files will save to the virtual machine, and there is probably some easier way to access them from your actual computer, but I usually just plug in a USB while the VM is running, copy them to the USB, shut down the VM and then copy from the USB to the actual computer.

All this is, obviously, much more of a faff than just using the emulated version online, but it does have all the extra toys.

If you went to your favorite pizza place and tried to order mushrooms and pepperoni and the waiter told you, 'I'm sorry but you can't order those two toppings together. You have to pick one or the other,' you'd be pretty mad, right?

Forgive the analogy, I just ate pizza.

The Mac versus PC debate has gotten so ridiculous that even normal, sane people who wouldn't care one way or another are now hurling insults and tsk-tsking at family members and co-workers who have either fallen into the fruity Mac OS camp or the stodgy Windows world.

You know what? (Expletive) all that. I say, have the best of both worlds.

Over the weekend, I installed Windows 7 RC, a free, preview version of Microsoft's forthcoming operating system, the successor to Windows Vista. Best of all, it works perfectly well on newer Macs sporting Intel processors. My Macbook, which is two years old, runs it like a champ as a Boot Camp partition. I never thought I'd say this about a Windows operating system again after refusing to upgrade from Windows XP, but from what I've seen so far, Windows 7 is... really good. Fast, pretty and without a single crash so far (knock on wood).

A step-by-step guide to installing Windows 7, after the jump.

Here's how to install it on your Mac in a few simple steps:

Make sure you have plenty of hard drive space, at least 40 or 50 gigabytes on your Mac. You're going to lose about 15-25, at least, to run Windows 7, so leave yourself plenty of space for Mac OS, too.

Go to this Microsoft page and sign up for the Windows 7 Release Candidate Customer Preview Program. It's a mouthful, but it works. Microsoft will send you a unique activation code you'll need later. Print it out or write that code down.

Download the 32-bit version of Windows 7. It's a big download, more than two gigabytes, so you'll be waiting a little while.

Burn the .iso file to a DVD to create a Windows 7 install disk. You can do this easily with OS X's Disk Utility. (More detailed instructions here).

Open up Boot Camp Utility. This will walk you through the process of creating a partition on your hard drive for Windows 7. Print out the manual if you want to (it does contain some good, useful info, but it's about 26 pages). Then use the DVD you burned to install Windows 7. Your machine will reboot several times as it installs.

You'll be asked, once Windows is installed, to enter your activation code.

You have Windows 7! As soon as you're in the Windows desktop, insert your Mac OS install disk (either the one that came with your Mac or a Leopard OS disk if you've upgraded) and install the Mac drivers that are on that disk. This will enable sound, your iSight camera and other hardware from your machine.

Don't like it? When you're back in OS X (see below), you can use Boot Camp Utility to delete the Windows partition and reclaim your hard drive space.

That's it. You have a working copy of Windows 7, which will continue to function normally until March 1, 2010.

If you want to switch back to OS X, you'll need to go into Control Panel and look for Boot Camp in order to tell the machine to restart in Mac mode. Once you're back in OS X, you'll have to do the same thing (in System Preferences) to go back to Windows 7. Software like Parallels and VMWare Fusion allows you to run Windows programs while in Mac OS, too. Both can run Windows 7.
