I have a list of resources on my pinned post, but I don't really have a place for the simple miscellaneous tips and tricks, so here's this!

I didn't know most of these existed for probably far too long, so this post is mostly to spread awareness for new users or those who may not have heard of them before <3

I'll update this post if I learn of any other handy tricks. If you know any, let me know and I'll add it here :D

who is this girl?

as i approach 100 followers and soon become tumblr famous and known across the globe i think it's high time i made an introductory post. hiii ^_^ i'm deme!! or demeter. or dante. or jack. pick your poison from the tetrad

in my free time, when im not staring blankly at whatever assignment ive been tasked with doing (and that i am promptly not doing and that i am instead merely contemplating with growing dread), i like to create! i've been brushing up on my html and javascript in the past year or two, and i made a fully fledged choose-your-own-adventure last year on my birthday! what? you want to see it? erm. no. sorry. the site is scary i need to finish the rest of it you can wait til then

i enjoy long walks on the beach i mean writing and drawing! i'm working on like. three books right now? two are on the backburner. the third one is also on the backburner but i'm trying to reel it in like a bigass fish that is trying to pull me into the ocean depths. i also enjoy drawing from time to time but i would not say i'm particularly good at actually finishing pieces. i'm definitely better at finishing drawings than i am at finishing pieces of writing.

i've combined all three of these interests of coding, writing, and drawing, into my webcomic, finality! you can read it here. as of the time of writing, it's not very long, but i have most of it planned out. as of this september, i'll have been planning it out for a whole three years. scary!

HTML, RichText, and BB_Markup

Back in the day "RichText" or text that can be stylized like you would in Microsoft Word, or an E-Mail, wasn't often available in social media platforms.

And there's still some social media platforms who don't allow it at all.

This has multiple reasons, the processing is done in script at the browser level, and so there used to be performance reasons not to allow it. Or most of your users would experience a slow down just to view the text, why bother with it?

As browsers started getting more comfortable and fast enough to deliver HTML pages, with the markup allowed in HTML, HTML became the default. But as JavaScript grew in popularity, scope and use. HTML itself became a way for people to inject scripts directly into the page.

And instead of just, cleaning script tags and other injection vulnerabilities, websites took HTML away from users all together. This was a problem, in Part, directly influenced by the W3C {World-wide web consortium}, and big-browser (Microsoft, Netscape, and Mozilla, and later Google, Apple, and Opera) who all implemented HTML/CSS/JS differently.

Nobody knows why they did this, they just did. (Actually, there's a bunch of different reasons, but as you look deeper into the rabbit hole, the more absurd it gets.)

After that, forum and social media designers came up with *BB_Markup* I think BB means blackboard, but who knows for sure anymore.

BB was basically a shorthand HTML markup that used square-brackets instead of triangle-brackets, and at a server level, that markup got turned into *safe* HTML markup--to avoid user-level injection attacks.

We also get a bunch of other short hand that may or may not be used in certain platforms (like reddit) to this day. Wrapping text in asterisks to italicize a word, or tildes or the little wavey dash (~) which denote bolding under lining or strike through depending on what you're used to.

All sorts of things that some people who were netizens of the 90s and early-00s might still be in the habit of using.

Today, there's little reason for browsers to even allow <script> or script-referencing mark-up at that particular level anymore. Which would solve A LOT of early security issues. But they don't change it back because a lot of websites still use tricks like that, because that's what developers do.

Even though advertising still allows injection and browser-hijacking at a "user-level" just like in the olden days. Yep, if you host ads, there's a good chance you're allowing those ads to deliver malware to your users.

Looking at you YouTube and websites that say "Please stop using ad-block". They don't use them to prevent you from getting paid, they use them to stop you from injecting their device with malware.

You big dummys.

That's part of the reason why I'm an advocate of "ad-reform". Advertising companies are leveraging their ad-platforms for more than simply delivering ads.

There's a drive to put internet tools only in the hands of companies, taking net freedoms a lot of early-adopters take for granted, not like ad-block, more like not having to worry about malware being delivered to you while you're powerless to stop it.

I'm not even talking about internet surveillance, I'm talking about advertising companies delivering malware to office equipment. You know those hacks that seemingly target large databases everyday?

Paid Advertising.

Since a lot of, too many even, Internet users these days even know the basics of HTML/CSS/JS, they don't even get to see what it feels like to have the inspection tools be taken away from you so you can see how it is these websites are f* you.

I can't even [view source] on my phone anymore. *That's considered* a bigger security risk than ad-delivery hijacking *your* phone.

How much does ad delivery cost these days, and you can see, that's the price of delivering malware to the user. Not just advertising products.

So in my continuing saga of "the undercover assignment that might be a stealth vacation or possibly a weird internal psyop" the area of the resort under construction finally opened, which means I may lose my bet that this is about money laundering. Say "la vie," I guess, but it's actually really nice looking. Will definitely check it out in a couple of days when the initial crush dies down.

Actually, that could be the thing that makes me blow my cover - "resort town slacker local with rich parents" isn't usually hard to keep up, but I don't know how well I can fake incompetence when some college kid with a 2 week certification gives me the "safety training" this new attraction requires.

Anyway, no I continue to have no beach and/or snow bunnies, I'm on assignment, no matter how vague. Hope everyone's doing well, congratulations on the physical therapy milestone, Murphy!

The noisy city is blinding, the glaring glass strikes me down deaf, and through the deceptive, winding, disgusting streets that I’m finding, I feel the soot join with my breath.

Ah, but just let my thoughts wander to somewhere that’s peaceful and green. Of that place I’ll sit and ponder: before my youth I can squander, I just want some time to be clean.

Muses, lend me your skillful words, Erato and Thalia both; chirp in my ear like hummingbirds but only when my speech is slurred. Ideas my own are my oath.

I’ll follow where the blackbird flies past crumbling towers where upon the carcass of industry lies, and farther than the graying skies, to a small pond with a toad and swan.

A woman walks along the shore named Juniper, just like the tree that grows beside her cottage door, under she’d sit in years before with the same flowers growing free.

She stoops to pick a lily pale that had been crushed beneath some boot, brought it inside, while it was frail, she let it stay in from the gale to give it its own time to root.

She doted upon that flower, admired its beauty and charm. The lily felt her love shower, she checked on it every hour, and made sure it came to no harm.

When the lily started to yearn for Zephyrus’ gentle spring winds, its memory started to turn away from the things it had spurned to things that without it had thinned.

Juniper took it to the grass, softly calming its fear and pain. It felt its blooms were made of glass and worried the world would harass another worthless freak so vain.

She faltered a moment in fear, for this pause the country girl saw, she worried that if she drew near, maybe nature really would jeer, and the lily would full withdraw.

And maybe the world wouldn’t hate, but the lily’d still think it did. Fear would fully take hold, and great Anxiety would write its fate back into the house where it hid.

But to think that any world would was not be a thought borne of sense. Still even where Juniper stood, the lily was unsure it could become ever again this tense.

And Juniper passed no judgment. It’s no shame to go home and hide. The lily could stay, lament, until it was calm and content and ready to go back outside.

I don’t know what’s going to be by that pond with the swan and frog. I’ll learn when I’m finally free and led there by swift Mercury, but for now I’ll choke through the smog.

you’re so right for maybe shits just fucked up in the desert, couldn’t agree more. as intriguing as it is i think not explaining it makes the whole thing feel hazy and unreal in a way that fits the Danger Days world so well. shit IS just fucked up! in a similar vein, as much as I am curious about that poison backstory I agree it works better to keep it off-limits. he’d get mad at me genuinely made me laugh

knowing what to explain and what to leave to interpretation is such an essential part of good writing and such a hard balance to strike. some of it is down to taste--im glad you agree with the way i chose to do it!

Tag Game: Non-Sims Interests

Writing: Particularly worldbuilding & character development, with roleplaying being my favorite way to implement both of those. In fact, I originally got Sims 4 JUST as a method to have a handy character creator that allowed for LOTS of customization for my characters (because I was SICK of being unable to find decent face claims for my RP characters)...I just turned out to like way more than just CAS! I still spend most my time in CAS, obviously, but I definitely didn���t expect to enjoy it as much as I do.

Web Design/Photoshop: [insert ‘graphic design is my passion’ joke here] I started fiddling with Photoshop as a tiny babby, around age 13-15ish, because I wanted to make my own pretty customized profile pictures for my RP characters. This evolved into learning HTML/CSS to ALSO make my sites pretty on my own, as well. It’s still one of my favorite hobbies, and basically the only one I’d be okay monetizing for a possible self-employment option.

Nature & Animals: I grew up around dogs & cats, and even a horse when I was tiny. I have so much knowledge picked up through pure osmosis I SEVERELY underestimate how uncommon a lot of shit I know about animals (dogs in particular) actually is. I can’t live without an animal companion, and I enjoy just working with them as a whole. I also semi-recently discovered a love for gardening (within the last 4-5 years), which really sucks when it’s hotter than Satan’s asshole most of the year here, so my time outside is SEVERELY limited by my heat sensitivity.

Computer/Tech: Building my own PCs led me to have much more of an interest in the hardware side of things than I expected! I built my first PC around 7-8 years ago, and late last year I built my second one to replace to original one I’d built once it started to really show its age. My new one had me learning how to install a liquid cooling system, which took a bit to wrap myy head around how the HELL they fit into even large cases. I wish I had more opportunities to fiddle with hardware for computers outside of my own builds, but have no way to reliably do so, sadly.

Other Games: I have MANY other games I play & love, in case the abundance of fandom sims I have didn’t make it obvious enough. I play both FFXIV & GW2 as my online games, with XIV being more my ‘social fuck around’ game, and GW2 I...sort of? Do some kinda more serious content. I use that term loosely – I’ve only done a couple of the easiest CMs, and all the rest if just the normal version of raids/strikes, but that’s still much more ‘serious’ than how I treat my XIV game time. I used to play SWTOR as my main MMO, and while I still love it...I really can’t stand what they’ve turned it into. Outside of MMOs, my favorites are: Dragon Age series, Mass Effect series, Baldur’s Gate 3, Tyranny, Greedfall, Saints Row series, Stray, and favorite game of all time is, hands down, Okami.

An alternate re-telling of cannon/the live action events of MDZS which all sparks from Wei Wuxian being captured upon Jin Zixuan’s death and taken by Jiang Cheng to Lotus Pier.

In a panic, Lan WangJi rushes to Lotus Pier where he confesses his love to Wei Wuxian in the dungeons and Wei Wuxian reciprocates.

Tragedy strikes however as Wei Wuxian is sentenced to execution for his crimes despite Lan Wangji’s efforts. Their last moments together are shared in a dream where Wei Wuxian whispers the mysterious message for Lan WangJi to come find him.

Years later, Lan Wangji’s grieves by trying to collect Wei Wuxian’s scattered journals, tracking them down and piecing them together as a better way to understand them. But his search for the journals is tampered by an unknown figure who is tracking them down as well and sending Lan WangJi obscure message. Suddenly Lan WangJi believes that there may have been more to Wei Wuxian’s execution and Wei Wuxian’s final messages than he initially believed.

His search for the truth leads him to make alliances with cult members, enter dream realms, contend with moments from the past and possibly bargain with his very soul.
