Atsushi and Pain

wanted to talk about the 55 minutes pain paragraph so here we are

In fiction, there's always been the trend of finding loopholes to prevent fatal injuries from actually being fatal. Characters magically able to live in situations where they definitely should be dead or sometimes even just brought back to life. Bsd unsurprisingly is no exception, from basically the third chapter and onward Atsushi is constantly taking blows that he only manages to live through because of the "healing" aspect of his ability. Even to the point of losing limbs.

Because of this I find often large injuries in fiction are something you easily become desensitized to, which is why this moment the the 55 minutes light novel is so notable to me. Usually something like two bullet wounds (the injuries Atsushi has in the scene) seems simple and almost standard. He is shown getting worse injuries all of the time. So to read that casually and then to be hit in the face with four paragraphs on Atsushi's relationship with pain and for it to be described to the audience that pain is not something he has gotten used to but instead a constant agonizing experience that he has learned to endure throughout the span of years gives the scene so much more meaning. To have pain be described as something Atsushi has learned to perceive as integral to his very identity and existence shifted my entire view on Atsushi character and in all honesty I think of "Atsushi hated pain." everytime that he gets hurt in the main manga.

(Also specification of Atsushi negating his wounds not healing or recovering them was actually monumental to me personally)

College au atsushi but he is spotted by his classmates doing detective work, either the most typical of cases or him doing the most batshit crazy things.

Classmates: *chilling in a Cafe hanging out or studying*

Atsushi: *suddenly absolutely obliterates the glass window and cracks the concrete because he was hit by an ability user*

Classmate 1: A..are you okay?— wait... Atsushi?!

Classmate 2: Are you okay dude?

Atsushi: *bleeding from the multiple shards of glass stabbing him* Im alrighr thank you, wait, huh..?? Why are you all here?? All of you should evacuate this place, it's not safe.

Classmate 1: You are not okay, look at that amount of blood??

Atsushi: Oh, this? Don't worry I heal pretty fast, now go

Classmate 2: A-alright if you say so..

Classmate 1: That was actually pretty hot

The next day the whole classroom was buzzing because of what classmate 1 and 2 saw, cue a confused Atsushi and the multiple chocolates and letters on his seat.

Somewhere in the Port Mafia akutagawa sneezes profusely (It's his jealousy radar going off)

akutagawa: Is it because you are a cat?

atsushi: what?

akutagawa: That you like shiny things.

atsushi: what no- it's a song lyrics like... it's i like shiny things-

akutagawa: Because you are a cat.

atsushi: -but i'd marry you with paper rings- I AM NOT A CAT

akutagawa: The smarter choice would be to pay for rings with my money. If all you can afford are paper rings.

atsushi: it's a SONG. i'm not marrying you !

akutagawa, nodding: Because you want an actual ring

atsushi: what? no i dont care about that? there are plenty of other reasons i wouldnt marry you. and this is a song!

akutagawa: Are the reasons that I can afford an actual ring and you can only afford paper ones?

atsushi: THE REASON IS THAT WE'RE ENEMIES!

akutagawa: Ah.

rashomon, twirling around atsushi's ring finger, suddenly

akutagawa: Perhaps you want to marry with neither a paper ring nor an actual ring?

atsushi, confused but blushing: ... I don't get you at all

akutagawa, confused: You started this conversation, though?
