Okay, fun question time. One of the various multimedia elements of the LotR Road Trip AU story is that I am planning on making playlists for each member of the Fellowship, the idea being that they're supposed to be snapshots into everyone's music libraries for when they have the aux cord in the car.
My music taste is pretty all over the place, which helps with a project like this, but I can't claim it's as broad as I would like when trying to represent the music tastes of nine different people. So I would love to solicit some ideas from people--genres, artists, even specific songs. You name it.
Here's generally the vibes I've been curating so far, though I'm not entirely married to all of them:
Frodo -- Indie, acoustic, folk? Probably some instrumentals. Chill beats to carry a cursed artifact to.
Sam -- Generally pretty upbeat. For sure some really traditional folk influences but also like. Folk rock. Should be an extremely feel-good playlist.
Merry -- Nerd music, to put it simply. Folk and filk, as well as some of the found-filk folks out there like Hank Green, probably.
Pippin -- Pop music! He's here to have a good time. Would especially love some input from the Gen Z crowd here since my pop knowledge is a little dated for the youngest member of the Fellowship. What Chappell Roan song would be his favorite.
Boromir -- He is puzzling me. I am keeping in mind that he should have some like. Elder millennial vibes. Currently have Green Day, etc on there but I'm trying to decide if that works.
Aragorn -- Dad rock, plus some modern rock. Think about your dad's road trip playlist (I know mine has several) and you're getting the right picture.
Legolas -- Pop and some indie/acoustic songs. Also a little musical theater. I'll be honest I'm making his eclectic on purpose. Definitely a little cheesy, aro/ace jams encouraged.
Gimli -- Metal, industrial, classical. There is no bigger Trans-Siberian Orchestra fan. Possibly also some labor songs, though I'm thinking more like metal/rock covers.
Gandalf -- Prog rock and other wizard music. I am doing something very dumb and silly and putting classic rock songs with meta references to LotR on his (ex: Led Zeppelin's Misty Mountain Hop), but other suggestions are good too.
Please feel free to totally contradict some of these vibes though. Ideally some of these playlists with be a little more all over the place than I would usually lean towards, since the idea is to represent someone's music taste, not make a true character playlist.
So! Help me out here. What do you all think each Fellowship member would listen to?

marauders era faceclaims/fancasts but it's all musicians from the 60s-80s because i am insane. let's go
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
first up is kate bush as lily! this felt so obvious. even though she's not a ginger and her eyes are hazel (i think?) instead of green, there's something so sweet and warm about her that makes her a perfect lily to me. and omg the pics of her as a child are sooo ridiculously cute.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
next up is andy partridge (my beloved) as james. he is in fact blond but i think the glasses are a wonderful coincidence. and he has a great face for james, very british-looking. honorable mention to steve albini who was my original pick but wasn't quite right (not very british-looking, does have black hair tho) – just wanted to mention that because i really only wanted to include him in this post to piss him off
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
young chris cornell is literally scary accurate for sirius like his face might as well be directly lifted from my BRAIN. i was really hoping to find a 70s musician for him (these pics are from the late 80s) just for consistency among the marauders, but this was too good not to use
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
next is alex chilton as remus. the pic on the left was when he was literally 17, while the middle one (and presumably the right one?) are when he's older. i might just be picking him because he reminds me of andrew garfield, who i don't even like as a fancast for remus, but he's infiltrated my subconscious nonetheless. also look at his little peace signs, isn't he so cute and silly and quirky? ok moving on
Tumblr media Tumblr media
i'll be honest i struggled with peter but i think i'm pretty happy with greg lake here. the hair is a little dated (these pics are probably from the late 60s?) but i like his big round face. and come on i needed SOMEONE from a prog rock band in this post. it just feels right for it to be peter
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
alright i really struggled with snape so i'm including a few options and i really want to hear which one people like the best. personally i think the best fit is unfortunately young marilyn manson (first two pics). i was originally going to go with todd rundgren (next two) because of the long face, long hair, bad teeth... why are you booing me i'm right. i like that todd is a 70s guy because it feels more consistent with the other characters, but marilyn's got the goth factor... overall i think they're both DECENT, but i'm not sure if either one has quite the right nose. what do you guys think?
also shoutout to my many rejected snape picks, including steve peregrin took from t rex (not bad but not amazing, i debated including pics but this post is already long enough), rozz williams (too cool-looking), roger waters (meh), and frank zappa (PERFECT nose, but no good pictures without the giant mustache and the rest of his face isn't very snapey to me).
wow ok i can't believe i did this. this is so incredibly stupid but it also took me weeks to do, so i would love to hear what people think of my picks. you're welcome or i'm sorry or whatever

@eucyon Oh my god tumblr ate your ask I’m so lucky I screenshotted. So mad I have to type again . Thank you so much for dis question it’s so fun and made me really think to be honest ^__^ ILYSMMMM this is long but it’s too fun
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is Lynx’s most popular album, Conspiracy Theories. I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to have a pic of lynx as the cover even if it’s silly. I really like rabbit imagery in music anyways though so I think it’s nice. I was inspired by Alice In Chains album covers and also fleshwater’s ‘we’re not here to be loved’. I tried to find a way to make it more 'gritty' but I couldn’t unfortunately 😭 I like how the title looks, like they just got a label maker and smacked it on..heheh
I imagine that this album is about relationship anxiety, betrayal, resentment, anti social tendencies, infidelity, and aliens. Probably not little green men, maybe more like the thing kind of fleshy imagery. Definitely appealing to atlas and scotch in different ways. Tool’s Undertow is a good example (off the top of my head..) of the sound I’m thinking of, so… prog? Or at least heavily inspired. I’m bad with genres heheh
im currently trying to either become okay with roadkill's name, or decide on a new one.. so im not making any album covers for them yet lol but i will post when i do..
I think roadkill would take a lot of inspo from their fave band so their style is probably heavily influenced by Lynx. Scotch adds a lot of sampling, distortion, whatever..idk I don’t make music.. and atlas is a big fan of slow tempo and bass. think its important to note that atlas doesnt play bass like a bassist in this album, he plays it more like a guitarist. kind of. hope that makes sense. I’ve always been really torn about roadkill’s genre, it’s been everywhere and tends to change. scotch and atlas’ styles would be vastly different if they were solo, so I think that’s why i am so indecisive . I think I just have to keep reminding myself that they’re in a band together, so styles would be mixed.
A part of me is like.. I think roadkill’s first album would be reminiscent of faith no more’s ‘the real thing’, or even some of Primus' stuff in some sense, plus similarities to Lynx and influences of industrial. i know thats a lot of random descriptions. I kinda think of (here’s a goofy genre for ya) sludge metal bands’ instrumental style, not necessarily vocal style... its hard to describe a band that doesnt exist. LMFAO
right now im thinking about 'the pot' by tool as a close example of roadkill.. im having a hard time finding artists that match scotch's vocal range even remotely. also doesnt help that the bands im basing this off of like tool and FNM dont exactly...fit into genres very neatly. roadkill and lynx wouldnt either. HAH. i just know it wouldnt be that high quality but definitely obvious theres a lot of passion in it. i mean this is just an album made by guys who dontknow what theyre doing. like at all. lol
Roadkill’s sound changes quite a bit their next album when seraph is involved. It becomes a lot more ummmm I guess palatable to more people? I don’t exactly know what I mean by that. Ok. LOL. I’ll think about it.. but this is around when Scotch realizes he wants this to be his job. Having Seraph helps A LOT with building a more dedicated and bigger audience, since they’re the one most willing to make changes. Plus they’re in art school, I feel like they’d have connections. So I guess roadkill would sell out in a way.
if you asked me this question a year ago i would have had a completely different answer. i wouldve probably said roadkill is pop punk or garage rock or something. i have trouble fitting scotch and atlas into a genre together. it fits scotch just fine and i think he would enjoy it, but its not roadkill.. also ive been thinking of stylizing roadkill as rdkill.. lmk wat u think.. im unsure about the name is generalHAHA. i know this is a lot so dont feel pressured to reply to everything LMAO im just thinking out loud. and drawing connections between genres that completely do not make sense. peace and LOVE<3

Pinned post, because, why the fuck not...
My name is Yuuichi, my gender and age does not matter (beyond Adult in the 18 - 24 age range), we are a system but just call us all Yuuichi it does not matter, I like to draw and have fun, and computers and cartoons, and 1980s Japanese new wave and prog, I just say whatever here really. Be warned a lot of posting about Kiyoshi from Hanazuki. If you don't want to see that don't follow or block the tag "#Yuuichi's Kiyoshiposting Extravaganza". And don't give me unsolicited critique on my work, my art is solely for me and it isn't my deal if you don't understand it, there's much more art that suits your taste all over the internet, let me have my little house of weirdness if you have a problem with it leave! And beyond Tumblr I am not on social media at all so I don't understand a lot of meme references and stuff, so sorry if you say a meme to me and I don't get it
Also, if you are the type of person who wants to moralize at me for being a grownup with a crush on a baby show character please kindly fuck off, I am an autistic C/S/A survivor who does not experience any kind of attraction to real people (with the singular exception being a Japanese musician who gained popularity in the 80s). I like Kiyoshi in such a way because he reminds me of a plushie doll and he makes me feel comfy and safe not for any kind of disgusting reason so before you come up in here prepared to say horrendous shit just remember I have been both C/S/A'd and exclusively attracted to cartoon characters and plushies as far back as I can remember. If it makes you uncomfortable the block button is there for a reason use it instead of accusing a complete stranger of one of the most horrific crimes ever. I have never had anyone like this on my Tumblr before but I have had people ask me weird questions about my interest in Kiyoshi elsewhere so I just put this here
I don't have a DNI really anyone can interact as long as they are not rude or bigoted... (Actually ETA because I didn't know if I should put this here but I decide to just in case: If you in any way identify with or as Yuuichi Mizuoka from Re:Kinder please block me. Nothing personal I just don't like seeing people saying they are or "kinning" me) but if you are one of those people who engages in "discourse" online I would really rather you not engage much with our work... I am on here to have fun mainly, and beyond that, I think a lot of the stuff people get worked up over online is super dumb, like why do you care about whatever tf "flag discourse" is or "he/him lesbians" (He/him lesbians you ladies are awesome just saying people who get into e-slapfights over it are silly)... as long as you ain't hurting nobody we're chill. Also if you believe in "narcissistic abuse", I have NPD, and am fairly open about that fact, so maybe reconsider if you want to engage with us... but that doesn't bother me you can still interact I will just think you're holding dumb beliefs.
If I soft/block you (and you do not ID with/as me) it is because your profile makes you look like a rude person I never soft/block people otherwise I just really don't like mean people to be on my profile sorry
As well if you are reading this before you interact with us I would like you to know that we are genuinely kind of insane.. it isn't the place to go into details but on top of autism we have severe mental issues and are non-human therefore we struggle with communicating with people and process things much differently from normal people. So please be cognizant of the fact that you are interacting with a bunch of non-human crazies when you interact with us thank you, we never mean to intentionally upset or hurt anyone on here we're just weird and low-empathy and struggle to understand human morals
Also if you want to draw any of my OCs in whatever (worksafe) scenario you don't have to even ask. As long as you tag me once it's done.

OH, DISMEMBERMENT PLAN...
what an insane band name, when I first started listening to them, I had no idea what "to dismember" meant, I only looked up the dictionary definition after seeing people's reactions such as "????????" and "the WHAT plan????!!!!", when they had been recommended the band. It happens. I feel it belongs to the experience of people who aren't native speakers of English, yet they've grown up surrounded by music in the language. Music comes first, lyrics second, meaning... third??
I still have a clear memory of ten-year-old me memorizing all the lyrics to my favorite Linkin Park songs. While I recognized some of the words I was singing along to, I wasn't able to decipher their meanings and wasn't even trying to. That band was my first real obsession. Hyperfixation, perhaps. They were the music I would play when I was given access to youtube on the family computer. Turns out I didn't get to grow up to be the person who gets the aux. In my teenage years I went through so many more music phases, a journey I'd love to discover in better detail across many more posts in the future. There was my metal phase with a milion subphases within it (since there is probably more subgenres than bands), then a prog and alt rock phase, then in the summer of 2019 a friend introduced me — 16 year old, coming to terms with their newly discovered queer identity — to car seat headrest, which swept me like an ocean wave and irreversibly changed my music taste and also me as a person.
The world of indie music opened itself to me, so many new artists, bands, but more importantly specific albums by those artists, dc snuff film/waste yrself, the glow pt. 2, itaots, souvlaki... all the classics, but none of them had a hold on me as strong as Twin Fantasy by CSH, Come In by Weatherday, Funeral by Arcade Fire, YWNKW by Sweet Trip, and – well, my Elliott Smith obsession was yet to come but we can count XO in there too. But in the midst of all these albums, you could find Emergency & I, a record that I enjoyed when I first listened to it, I didn't really think much of it, but I really felt the need to return to it. And then again and again, I best enjoyed the fun, most standard songs, What Do You Want Me To Say and Gyroscope, I loved hearing the small weird details in them, the time signatures, the mindblowing drumming... the album didn't mean a lot to me at first. I was still 17 when I first heard it, I needed to grow into it.
A year later I got into a long distance relationship, I started university, I moved from my small town to a big city. And it sucked, I wasn't really able to make any friends, I couldn't handle the pressure of schoolwork, my depression got much worse, my adhd meds weren't really doing anything, at some point I stopped leaving my dorm room and I ended up sinking into a deep metaphorical pit and eventually dropping out after four months. Fun stuff. The reason why I am mentioning all this is that there is a strong correlation between my music journey and my life journey. And Emergency & I is the college age young adult album. There is so much loneliness packed into it but it's not exactly sad or depressing. This album can be kind of laid back, or extremely anxious, it can be very nihilistic and dystopian, it can be very fun or it can completely rip your heart out, it can make you think "yeah I do know these people", it can be very silly and the next second it throws the most poetic and beautiful words at you that fill your heart and head with an abundance of images and feelings. And it gets better the more you grow into it and the more you relate to it, and even if you don't relate to everything, the songwriting and storytelling is so perfect and emotionally intense that it will rip its claws into you and never let you go.
In the last year and a half I've managed to get myself into a much better place in terms of mental health and academic success. I started studying again, this time a subject I love (languages), I found some amazing friends, the long distance relationship has turned into a less distance relationship and we see each other relatively often and things are going great and I finally realized that Emergency & I is the best album ever made. Because even when everything is going great, maintaining all those parts of my life is not easy at all and this album knows it too well. Okay, maybe it is not the best album ever made, but it is the best album for me. At this stage of my life.
But do I claim that after over three years, I understand the meaning of this album perfectly? Not really. Well, I bet not even Travis Morrison does, because how could he have predicted the intensity of the feelings I go through each time I listen to the album, or the impossible to fill void that appears inside of my chest after the final track ends, making me long for more of those feelings but also making me sad becuase there is nothing else quite like E&I...
And, you know, maybe I was wrong and the song meaning does not come third. Maybe the first time you listen to a song, it already means something to you. Maybe that is why I was drawn back to the album. Each time I listen to it I am a different person. And the songs mean different things. Of course I understand more of the song lyrics the more I read them and listen to them and analyze them but words can only go so far in terms of meaning. The band created the songs with certain ideas in their heads but those ideas have been transformed so many times, from their minds through their instruments, on paper, to the recordings, the masters, and then to the ears and minds of thousands of people, through different mediums, through different means of discovery. Songs mean different things to you when a friend recommends them to you or when you find them on your own, even before you listen to them. And I am not even mentioning live performances where your body vibrates with the music and the room and the songs are changed ever so slightly each time. Nobody experiences music the same way.
And I could talk for hours about what exactly the album means to me but I cannot and also do not want to fit all of it in one post. I want to dedicate a separate post to each of the songs on this album, which is one of the things my blog is going to be about, but I don't want to limit myself to being only a dismemberment plan fan, I want to document my music journey here, both by looking into the past and sharing my current favorites (for example get ready for a ton of weatherday posting this year). This post is just me speaking random sentences into the void, to prepare everyone for all of my future long posts, which are also going to be me ranting into the void, hoping things will end up making at least some sense to at least one of you (assuming somebody will read this, but I know this place is full of nerds just as obsessed with things as me (or even more, actually) so my chances aren't a complete zero).
tldr listen to dismemberment plan, it might change your life. I am not conscious enough to proofread. goodnight <3

Are there any other characters of note in Vinyl Hell :0?
hm, it depends on your definition of 'of note'- most of the characters disappear in and out but i'll talk about the more plot-instigator ones - and you can probably tell i am somewhat struggling with the mid-plot
idk if you saw allay's ask a few minutes ago um . the smart patrol are a group of 3 kids (like 10) who basically mistake the jester for a villain they fight and try to, well, fight him. they end up hitting his face and he gets knocked out and then they get bored and leave. this starts his transformation into a doll.. (they're from a devo song called smart patrol / mr dna)
when the jester is halfway between 'human' and doll, he meets seireeni (she's the devo song puppet boy). she basically tries to convince him to hang around with her and perform for crowds- and also realizes he isn't from the new wave world and tells him. she's silly but i haven't decided how yet
Farris is actually going to be important i promise . she's based on the great curve, a talking heads song from Remain In Light, a song about / with a theme of spirituality and divinity. i dont really know how to sum it up and i honestly just suggest listening to it . in contrast to most of the characters she is aware of the 'looping' nature of the musical world, and mostly views it as a freeing positive thing. this awareness will be important i just Don't Know How Yet also due to being from remain in light she is Gittens's sister
Okay this one require a bit of explanation. because i forgit to say it before.
the jester isn't a human guy. he's from the prog rock dimension. he's that yellow jester mentioned in like, 3 lines of in the court of the crimson king yayyyy. he doesn't remember this At First but, well... he will eventually encounter characters (i have not decided What Song Yet) who are going to be from king crimson songs- NEW WAVE ERA. yeah they dabbled in new wave at one point. YAY
i think that's all . i hope these make sense :-]D

I didn’t vote for Homura (I like that silly cat) however I AM transgender can I get band recommendations besides Blind Guardian? (I already listen to and love them. <|:) )
symphony x is really good! especially their stuff from the early 2000s! v: the new mythology suite is a great concept album by them about the story of atlantis that is wonderful to listen to in one sitting. it’s a symphonic prog metal album that uses a LOT of classical elements.
the final track to their odyssey album is also really good, and is 25 minutes long, so it’s a great time killer
ghost reveries by opeth also remains one of my favourite albums of all time! i generally don’t like growling and death metal, but the way this album paces itself and tactfully mixes out the death metal with softer prog rock makes it incredible to listen to
at the gates of oblivion by the dark moor really fucks too! it’s got a really pretty style of symphonic power metal that uses a lot of like. brighter sounding instruments? listening to it makes me think of stars :)
excerpts from a future past by hällas is a prog rock album that i like a lot! especially the first track, the astral seer, is one of my favourite wizard songs to listen to

My first EP is honestly not what I would recommend to people interested in my music but I kind of feel like making a post explaining the songs because as rough and weird as it is I do hold a fondness for them.
You have to understand that at the time Lady Charles was a way of blowing off steam and it wasn't till I crossed paths with Kevin Barnes at the exact right moment (story for later) that I started taking the project more serious. So this record is just a collection of emotions I felt I had to get out done in a really simple, demo-y way.
First off is Free Speech
This was the era of the alt right and I was getting sick of the obvious double standards. You can get beat up for burning a flag but the same people will defend their right to rag on minorities.
So originally I was going to sing "Canada sucks x3/it's a nation of cucks/USA sucks x3, it's a nation of cucks" etc. Because it was really stupid but might offend people and them I could explain that free speech was the point. But in the end my better senses won out and I made it a sort of manifesto for breaking down societal boundaries.
Musically it's got a cold, computerised sound that I don't think is really that appealing now (I liked the DIY ethos) but the actual music cycles through punk to video gamey to rock to soul which I am proud of.
This is maybe my fave of the album.
As background I had long been friends with this bedroom pop artist who I collabed with and who played in one of my bands. He started dating someone kinda toxic tbh and they went deep down a certain online rabbit hole that basically separated them from everyone they knew.
I really thought this guy had an amazing musical talent but he vanished from all our lives in a flash of untreated mental illness and flailing abuse. Even though I was upset at unfair treatment I received I missed the version of him that seemed long dead and so I wrote about the experience.
As I do sometimes when writing about other musicians, I wrote the song in his style, hence the twisty chords and cobbled together aesthetic. Sadly he never made more music and I don't know what happened since.
This is the moment I really came into my own vocally. I had been seeing a new teacher and she figured out immediately that my hearing issues were affecting my singing and taught me to compensate. It was the first time I was able to sing softly and accurately and it became the blueprint for my singing style.
MGMT's "When You're Small" was definitely an influence here.
Continuing the theme of exorcising demons, this one is a veiled song about misogyny in the music scene.
I had been a dancer (yes) for a band with a guy who really mistreated a female bandmate after kicking me out. I wrote some really savage satirical lyrics about him and hid them in plain sight in this short and silly interlude. This one got a weird amount of regular plays in Russia so spasibo bolshoi to the one Russian person who reps this one.
My least streamed song - I get it tbh!
It's very ugly. Cold computerised rhythm in a lilting 13/8 with my "old" manic, pitchy singing voice and sarcastic stabs of free jazz.
The lyrics are a self-deprecating rant about a shitty house venue I lived in where ableism, probably mercury fumes from the factory downstairs, and late nights combined in the worst way. I wouldn't have put this much cynicism in one EP if I knew that people would actually listen to Lady Charles 😂. I just needed the emotional release.
Honestly though I kind of think this is underrated. If I did it with a full band and better singing it could be a really abrasive but impressive bit of prog-punk. In a way it's the Apocalypse Girls beta release - that one is also chaotic and in an extreme time signature but it's a lot more developed.
And "All the girls in black boots/Talk about/knifeplay" is a very good representation of Montreal in 2017.
Breaking up the misery comes this dark instrumental.
Basically I envision it as some lost movie soundtrack from the 80s, drifting from an old VHS. There are shades of Nino Rota and Ryuichi Sakamoto in the pentatonic melody.
Then it breaks suddenly into 2000's electro jazz inspired by the Polish group Contemporary Noise Quintet.
My sax playing isn't very good technically in particular my intonation, but my instincts from guitar allow me to improvise in a fairly structured way which kind of makes it sound cool IMO. I always liked players who weren't amazing but soloed with a lot of emotion - like David Bowie or Kurt Cobain on guitar. I take a sax solo on my new album so maybe this is becoming a tradition.
The other highlight IMO.
This is a fairly abstract song about addiction and other copes and how they really tie into mental health which really ties into an unhealthy society.
"You can escape your demons/but you can't escape the world that breeds them"
It's musically a mix of Pinkerton era Weezer, 808s and Heartbreaks Kanye West, Across the Multiverse Dent May and 70s Eno with maybe a bit of Heat by DB and Cherry Peel of Montreal.
Like Bedroom Dynasty, I do a thing I like where the acoustic guitar acts as the percussive rhythm and I layer synths and electric guitars over - it feels very personal because it is just the instruments I play with no programming or outside help. I had purchased an arch top guitar from 1957 that had quite a dark tone and it inspired me to play a lot of acoustic around this time. Those old American archtop guitars aren't actually fancy or high end for the time but they sure are beautiful IMO.
Thanks, hope this type of content isn't too boring, it's just really fun coming here from Insta and being able to actually chronicle the stories behind my music and share the songs a bit instead of just making reels into the void.
I did everything on this EP myself by the way which is a blessing and a curse - my upcoming new album is still largely me multitracking myself but I took more care and there's key outside collaboration and I think you'll find the sound a lot more developed and complex.

Hello! I saw that you are doing Måneskin match-ups, and I would love one if you are still doing them!
I’m currently studying English and Art History at university, and I love reading anything I can get my hands on - I hope to be *that* professor that has an office of wall to wall books. I have shoulder-length brown hair, brown eyes, and I’m really short, only 5’0 - though being a Capricorn and five feet tall means that I’m often too ambitious and too sarcastic for my size. I love watching cheesy classic horror films, drinking really strong coffee, and browsing the aisles of bookstores, record shops, and art museums (while telling silly trivia facts about the artists to anyone who will listen).
I grew up in a musical household, with an older brother in a punk band and a younger one who played prog, so I learned the fine art of rock music at a young age…I play piano and guitar, and I sing as well, so combining a love of music with my love for reading means that I am somewhat of a romantic who is often unlucky in love; I grew up in a bilingual home, so at least I can sing about it in Spanish, too. 😂
So, that’s me! Hope you are doing well, and thank you! ☺️💓
¡damiano!

he’d always ask you to help him with his songs. you often write lyrcis together, sometimes you help him with the melody, etc. those songs you made together would be his favorites and he would always say (on his interviews, concert, idk) how there wouldn’t be for his most beautiful songs if there wasn’t for you.
imagine you are watching some slasher movie from the early 2000s and commenting all the time how stupid the character are. whenever you watch a horror, you’d place bets on who is the first to die. any time there are jump scares, he’d try to scare you, no matter that he knows he won’t success, as you know to expect it. though, you once scared him way too well, so you called it truce.
going to libraries together :’) you’d play a game to pick books for each other and whatever you pick, the other one needs to read. that led to some quite interesting reads, but when you are serious and really try to pick a good book, you would manage to find a one that the other person really likes (and than you could discuss it or something).
with both of you being capricorns, you completely understand each other’s ambitiousness. you’d support each other throughout. you know you can aways count on him and vice versa.
wish you a great day love❣️

(for the ask) Ace Rimmer?
oh fuck yeah
favorite thing about them
A bit cliche, but his general heroism! I really admire his selflessness and bravery. He puts other people before himself and, while an exaggerated swashbuckling hero for sure, he really is doing his best to help people and the universes he visits. Also I like how he doles out nicknames.
least favorite thing about them
Short life spans. :( If I remember correctly, most Aces don’t last, what, ten years after they start the gig. Plus, they can’t go back to their home dimensions, which sucks. It makes me sad and I don’t wike it.
Also he seems like the kind of dude that everything he says is flirting and everything you say he interprets as flirting, which would be kind of fun at first but in the long run would get aggravating. Sometimes I just wanna say something witty, I don’t want people thinking I’m hitting on them when I’m not. Luckily (? or not?) visits from Ace seem to be pretty brief, so I don’t think he’d have enough time to get on my nerves.
favorite line
Tie between Say what you like about me, but I won’t hear a word against Skipper here,” and “My god, it’s me, only much more handsome!” I think these lines are very emblematic of that aforementioned selflessness and also I find his self-deprecating (but not self-loathing! It’s a fine line to walk) charming. I’m charmed. These lines always have me like “Fuck I like this dude”. Also kin on the Skipper line, I too won’t have any slander against my boy!!!
Tumblr media
brOTP
Ace and me. I wanna hang out with Ace so bad. New spin off series pitch: a doctor who style show where he picks up various companions and goes adventuring with them and the first main companion is me. I would also, however, be willing to just steal the Wildfire, I think I could talk Fiona into liking me.
In terms of show characters uhhh He has almost all his screen time with Lister and they were clearly instant buds (and not just because Lister is predisposed to be fond of Rimmers wink wonk) so my instinct is Lister and Ace but I also think him and Cat play off each other really well so Cat and Ace.
OTP
To the shock of everyone who follows this blog, Ace/A Lister. Not necessarily our Lister, I think they’d be a fling at best, but I love love love the idea of Listers and Rimmers falling in love across universes.  I just like to think that Ace found a Lister out there (that probably didn’t have anything better to do if we’re being honest) that he can pick up and that they adventure together and also maybe they don’t get killed quite so quickly. Maybe because it makes my heart hurt to think of Aces being ultimately alone.
nOTP
Ace/His original Spanners. Dude’s a lot of things, but a homewrecker is not one of them. I think he would respect Kristine and Spanners too much to interfere in that kind of thing, especially when it seemed like a really solid relationship.
random headcanon
He’s great with kids! Not just when he’s rescuing them or whatever but just general kids love being around him because like he wears aviators! he has a shiny flight suit! He’s basically a real life super hero! He talks funny! How cool is that! Also Jim and Bexley from his universe DEFINITELY called him “Uncle Ace” and having to leave the kids he basically considered his nephews behind was one of the rougher parts of going to a new dimension. Also, interacting well with kids was something he actually knew how to do prior to becoming a spacefarer, it was just a natural talent (and him probably wondering what his dad would do in this situation and doing the exact opposite.)
unpopular opinion
I don’t like his haaaiiiirrr. It’s VERY fitting to his character and honestly it’s not that I actively dislike the look (it certainly doesn’t set off my fight or flight response like SOME haircuts, let me tell you. [Looking at you manbun+ specific styles of beards and also waxed handlebar mustaches. I call these looks portland/physics major chic and I hate them. I also just kind of generally dislike most facial hair? Anyway veering off topic]) but I am biased against it for being straight hair. I love Rimmer’s somewhat unmanageable curls (as a curly haired person, most curls are at least somewhat unmanageable and I love them) and having those curls be a little floppy and looser and longer and relaxed would’ve been EXCELLENT and I was ROBBED grant naylor straightening a character’s hair when they’re like the better version of themselves is the COWARDS and TRAITORS MOVE. Also I would’ve been down for a prog rog show pony hairstyle but I can’t always get what I want. It still could’ve been floofy and full and luscious but it SHOULD’VE HAD CURLS NO I WILL NOT BACK DOWN ON THIS YES I AM BIASED.
song i associate with them
I got a list babey!
“Take my breath away” by Berlin because it’s obviously what was being spoofed in the Ace Rimmer theme by Howard Goodall (which is fantastic by the way)
“Electric Lady” by Janelle Monae and Solange which is more about like the feel of the song than anything but also…when Aces are holograms…they’re electric people so…
“Here I go again” by Whitesnake and “Hundred Million Miles From Home” by Styx. Similar themes of being constantly on the road and isolated but also kind of in a kickass way. Kickass loneliness. That’s an Ace mood.
and for our Rimmer as Ace specifically:
“Uptight Downtown” by La Roux, because uhhh it’s a bop and also deals with like..change and stuff. I’m very eloquent.
favorite picture of them
It’s so hard to pick! He’s a very photogenic and also very silly character so there’s a lot of excellent pictures. So I’m gonna be self-indulgent and pick the pic that’s my icon!
Tumblr media
Side note about icons: I find it very funny that like 90% of Red Dwarf specific side blogs have some form of Rimmer as their icon.

Metallion Magazine n°112
I bought this magazine solely because I saw Devin Townsend name on the cover. And I spent an hour translating from French to English his little interview about his newest album: Empath.
@atchela, I think you could be interested!
                                            Devin Townsend
                                                  Live Free
Devin Townsend has for most of his time worked in total independance, in order to never restrain his inspiration. It was wondering when he would kick in the anthill again and fire his pals of the Devin Townsend Project. Well, it’s done, after ten years of loyal service ! Now, here comes Empath, one of the craziest albums of the maestro!
How would you introduce Empath ?
It depicts my midlife crisis. It summarizes perfectly all the styles I approached during my career. It is extremely diversified and emotional, going from rock to extreme metal through jazz and musicals, it reflects a whole load of colours. I hope it will warm the hearts of the fans because it’s an anti-depression album. I needed to compose in this way, having been victim of severe depressions myself.
Can it be compared to Infinity (1998) ?
When I composed Infinity, I was far younger. The album was made in pain. I was litteraly obsessed by the writing, and psychologically, I was not doing well. At the time, I was sure that music came from my “inner self”. With Empath, the diversity is similar, but the spirit is different because the music does not really come from me. It is inspired by the nature of my environment.
Empath is also the beginning of a new era since the members of the Devin Townsend Project have not been invited. Do you think this opus wouldn’t have been possible with them?
Yes, I think so. If I had kept the same line-up, I wouldn’t have could fully express myself. Devin Townsend Project was a band of progressive hard rock, which limited me... Empath was clearly not compatible with the idea of the band. After years spent with those guys, the relations have evolved. They became my friends. At first, I thought I could afford to be guiding and say them: “You must play it that way!”. But towards the end, I saw clearly that I could not impose my vision of music to them, I had to extract myself from here.
Was the moment of separation sad?
Yes, very sad! You know, the problem was not only artistic, it was also financial. For the band to function, we had to produce between fifteen thousands and twenty thousands of dollars by month.
My music is selling well but it is not so much. In order to maintain the salary of everyone, I had to release two discs a year and spend my life on the roads, far from mines. In the end, I was trapped in a gear preventing me from doing any pause. The pressure was immense! I ended up giving up everything, not without giving to each member of the band three months worth of salary so they could have time to flip.
Once the split was official, it was not question of making compromises anymore. Things had to be done in the best way.
If I wanted an orchestra, a choir or I don’t know what, it had to be this way.
You still kept Anneke from this period. She seems like you right-hand woman, participating to most of your projects...
She was not a member of the Devin Townsend Project, or at least not a salarian. She was there as a guest, always having the kindness to help me when I needed. It may be why our collaboration goes on.
Do you remember the first time you heard her sing?
Oh yes! I was in a friend’s car and we were listening to Mandylion (1995) by The Gathering. I was instantly spellbound, but our meeting happened only twenty years later.
You have another famous guest on the album, Steve Vai. How did you end up collaborating with him once again?
Steve made a solo on the final part of the track “Singularity”. I must admit that at first, I had thought of Vernon Reid from Living Colour, who is one of my friends, but he did not have time to help me.
So Vernon contacted Steve, who called me and said: “If you want a solo, you will have it!”.
A few years ago, you expressed some bitterness towards Terry Bozzio who participated like you to the album Sex and Religion (1993) from Steve Vai. Terry did not like you and took you for a novice. With time, did you try reconnect with him?
No! And I must admit that I have been too critical with him. Maybe I should not have...
Indeed, he was not particularly friendly, but I think I overreacted. I only have good things to say about his battery skills. That being said, I don’t really want to see him again.
Will Empath be playable on stage?
It will have to be. I intend to play all of it by 2020. To build this project, I already know I will have to call the three drummers who played on the album, Morgan Agren (for the free jazz ambiances and improvisations), Anup Sastry (for the progressive parts) and Samus Paulicelli for everything metal. To this will be added the choir, the orchestra, two keyboarders, three guitarists, a bassist and a percussionist, but it will take time.
For the moment, I am starting a tour alone with my accoustic guitar.
Your project seems to be on the same level as The Retinal Circus (2013)...
It is far more ambitious! From a financial point of view, I will only be able to set up this king of show in a few cities. I will have to think of a less ambitious formula with “lighter” rearrangements, probably one metal oriented show and another one more prog’.
“Detox” seems to be the only title from Strapping Young Lad that you accept, playing it during The Retinal Circus. Do you still reject the band?
During the last ten years, I admit I did everything to expulse Strapping Young Lad from my mind. But Empath changed my relation with metal, that I learned to reappreciate, I am not afraid or ashamed anymore to confess that metal is full well a part of my personnality.
In “Detox”, you scream this phrase on loop: “Hey you Mo’!”. What does that mean?
“Mo” is the abreviation of Moron, a typical Canadian expression meaning: idiot, silly, retarded.
And to avoid people misunderstanding, it’s me that I qualify of imbecile in this track! (Smiles)

Reviews 021: Earthboogie / Psychemagik / Stubb
Earthboogie’s Mr Mystery EP was one of my favorite 12”s last year and I am greatly anticipating their full length due out later this year. In the meantime, Leng have newly released the Silken Moon single featuring Nina Miranda alongside some fire remixes by Felix Dickinson and Ali Kuru. We also have the latest set of essential edits from the Psychemagik crew, hitting vibes of bonged out garage rock as well as moonlit balearic prog. Finally, there is this new and slightly mysterious project called Stubb from Ben Davis of Paper Recordings. The Jane Weaver(!) led “We Are Launching” is a psychedelic downtempo classic in the making, and “Boring Days” is a bouncy dubby summertime anthem.
Earthboogie - Silken Moon feat. Nina Miranda (Leng, 2018) We start with the original mix of “Silken Moon”, which itself is a deft re-imagining of Nina Miranda’s “Silken Horse”. Claps and joyous group vocals start the journey, eventually joined by funky psychedelic guitar riffing and shakers locked into a looping rhythm. The track nearly explodes with the introduction of a huge square wave bassline and classic house organs, but the beat doesn’t arrive, and the song remains restrained and hypnotic, with syncopated violins and flute trills firing off. When the beat finally enters full stop, we are riding on a chilled break towards an exotic sunset. Felix Dickinson continues his streak of killer remixes, here morphing “Silken Moon” into a jacking acid track with sweaty rave atmospherics. Many of the elements of the original are present, the flutes, strings, synths, and vocals, only Felix chops them and refracts them prismatically…dark colors bathing the mix. The single ends with Ali Kuru’s remix of “Human Call” and again we land in jacking acid territory. Walls of white noise whoosh through the mix and shimmering layers of percussive effects move over a storming beat, with everything eventually dominated by scratchy old skool siren sounds, harsh and hypnotic.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Psychemagik - The Trip EP (Psychemagik, 2018) “The Trip” is an edit/rework of The King’s Horse track of the same name, originally released in 1969. Psychemagik take this fairly standard, if obscure, garage power-trio number and expand it into a burning psychedelic epic. The track starts off like a demo, as the guitar, bass, and drums locked into a mighty lofi chug. The hands of the editors are visible in the spacey synthesizers and additional hand percussion. Eventually the rocking beat is bolstered by a healthy kick and cymbals, structuring the bluesy psych riffing into a raw disco stormer. There is stale bong smoke in the air, and the vocals echo out into the haze, singing of sex, drugs, and fantasy. “Sister of the Moon” comes in on a marching funk beat with wah pianos, liquid slide soloing, and electrifying leads. Angelic vocals take the groove towards a beachy lounge direction…salt in the air, sun reflecting off the sand, longing and timeless balearica. The disco horns and strings fire in counterpoint and orchestral builds lead to sea-swept climaxes with forlorn theremin sounding solos, and harps glistening like starlight.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Stubb - We Are Launching (Paper Recordings / Paper Wave, 2018) “We Are Launching” introduces an atmosphere of rattling percussion, chiming cymbals, shakers, and sad blues riffing. Big bass notes enter and psych goddess Jane Weaver’s glorious vocals rain down over the mix, heart-aching and beautiful, and eventually a laid back downtempo break enters. The cymbals and chimes continue to ring out in the mix, adding faraway new age textures alongside spacey synth arpeggiations, mesmerizing fx, and liquid space guitar. This dreamy slab of balearic pop is backed by “Boring Days” featuring Mike Lindsay of Tunng. The bouncy beat, led by snaps and synths, is not unlike a doped out “La Macarena”. Lindsay’s deep stoney vocals are hypnotically monotone and the lyrics are catchy, fun, and kind of silly. The spacey bounce is further emphasized by cosmic sequencing with psychedelic filtering and higher pitched sunny vocal harmonies floating in the background. And the song climaxes with crunchy synth riffs as the vocal hypnotism hits overdrive, even featuring classy sunset acoustic guitar soloing. Its a totally ear-worm vibe and will be stuck in your head for days. There is also an instrumental mix of “Boring Days”, functioning more like a dub and not unlike E Ruscha V’s recent work…sun shining, traveling the cosmos on rays of hope.

Flirting For The Entitled - Ch 2
I really do have NO CHILL. I couldn’t stop thinking about this silly little Christmas time prompt and what might have happened next. I am not actively working on this, but I’ll write little snippets as ideas come to me.
I’m thinking less a coherent plot and more slices of life. They may get posted out of chronological order if I think of something but I’ll try to re-label the chapters chronologically if that happens.
Ideas or prompts for this would always be welcome!

Back To School
Nathaniel abruptly slammed his sketchbook shut with a loud groan, his head falling forward and eyes shutting.
He just couldn't draw.
This had never happened to him. He'd had art blocks before obviously, but usually he would just change the drawing or doodle silly little pieces instead of anything important until it passed. He tended to get over it quickly enough that it was never an issue. But since the party a couple of weeks ago, sketching had gotten harder and harder to concentrate on and now even the most childish scribblings doodled in the margins of his notebook were—at best—abstract nonsense.
He kept his eyes closed, hugging the sketchpad to his lap tightly as the cool January air chilled him and he began to rock back and forth lightly to the music coming from his earbuds in an attempt to warm up.
He'd tried yet again to fit in a quick sketch, this time before the first day of school after New Year and so he'd arrived an extra ten minutes before he normally would have. Finding an empty bench had proved easier this way and he'd decided to just let his hand lead him across the paper in a sort of instinctual trust exercise. He'd thought the generic face he created had been a somewhat positive step away from his art block and had happily continued to draw without thinking, adding a few wisps of hair across the brow before adding a ponytail to make it a girl of some sort. The head had looked too bare so he had added a simple Alice band, detailing it more heavily when it appeared too subtle. Before he'd realised the head piece had turned into a pair of shades and he'd changed the mouth to show off a slight smirk.
That was when he'd slammed the book shut. Because while the picture wasn't yet Chloé, it was definitely on its way to becoming her and he couldn't deny it no matter how hard he tried.
Despite what she seemed to want he didn't like her that way so Nathaniel wasn't worried that her face might keep cropping up in his drawings because of some kind of hidden crush on her. But he had to admit that the shock of what she'd confessed to him at his party had sunken into his bones now and he couldn't avoid the weight of the knowledge on him every day. His mind kept drifting back to thoughts of her regularly as he tried to puzzle out if there was a moment he could pin down when she started liking him.
He'd cast his mind back constantly, first to the days preceding her little confession, then the weeks leading up to it and he'd discovered that she had indeed been really nice to him - in her own way, of course. Though he was seriously struggling to find anything that gave a sharp contrast between the then and now. Her behaviour seemed to have gradually morphed from mean to cheeky to coquettish in such a smooth transition that he was now pressed to find much difference between her insults and her teases other than her tone. For instance, she had regularly given him nicknames, most notably calling him Red but also throwing in any reference to the colour of his hair she could (Solo cup, Tomato, Stop sign, Clifford, the list went on). He had never really liked them but they hadn't been as bad as some of her past behaviour so he had built up a tolerance to them, assuming they were just low-grade insults. But lately they had seemed much more affectionate ways of getting his attention instead.
But what had messed him up the most, he decided, was the realisation that she had been flirting with him the whole time. A smirky smile here, a light brush against his arm there. The compliments he'd mistaken for insults were delivered just a bit too coyly to be anything as simple as praise for his drawing ability or interest in how well he was pulling off his outfit.
He groaned again as hindsight made him realise that one had been a particularly obvious innuendo which he'd completely missed at the time and his face burned in embarrassment at the memory of her little eyebrow raise when he'd failed to react.
He jumped suddenly when he felt a tap on his shoulder and he looked up to see the girl herself, standing in front of him in her warm winter coat and – he gulped – smiling sweetly at him. He quickly removed one of his earbuds to hear her.
“God, just how loud do you have that stuff Netflix?” she asked once she could see he was free to listen, “I must have said your name three times before I gave in and shook you.”
“Uh huh,” he said, an eyebrow raising sceptically, “How did you know I wasn't just tuning out those dumb nicknames and holding out till you used my actual name?”
“Oh please,” she said waving a gloved hand dismissively, “I have to use them all till I find my favourite. Although I think 'Red' is winning to be honest.”
She sat down beside him and before he automatically moved his leg away from her, Nathaniel reminded his self-preservation instincts strongly that he had promised to give her a chance at being his friend. He was not going to shrink away in fear of her saying something hurtful when she seemed to be trying so hard.
“So, what are you listening to anyway?” she asked tapping at the lose earbud which now dangled limply from the other, blaring away into the crisp air.
“Oh,” he said as he picked up the wire to ease the extra weight on his other ear, “It's a prog-rock band. I like a lot of their stuff but it's, uh a bit weird if you're not used to it.” Hesitantly, he offered her the other earbud. “Wanna see what you think?” he asked.
Chloé's eyes and smile widened and he swore the blue of her irises brightened as she looked at him. She gently took the offered wire from him, her clothed fingers brushing his bare ones as she did. She blushed heavily but didn't shy away like some girls might have and Nath suddenly felt his insides squirm uncomfortably.
He forced himself to refocus as he watched her reaction to the music playing in her ear. He couldn't hold back the snicker that escaped as she frowned and turned back towards him with a confused pout.
“What the hell?” she asked, puzzled, “What language is this? It's not French and I grew up around Daddy using English often enough to know it's not that either.”
“It's a language the band made up just for their music,” he told her, “Told you Magma are a bit strange.”
His laughter halted as her face turned suddenly devious and she leaned in towards him till he found himself leaning back in order to keep a comfortable amount of personal space between them.
“Magma?” she asked slyly, relenting in her invasion of his personal bubble and sitting upright again slowly as she watched him right himself as well.
“Uh, yeah?” he asked, brushing his hair out of his face in a nervous gesture to distract himself from how close she had gotten.
“As in red and hot? With a fiery interior hidden under a shy mountain?” she asked almost too innocently, the corner of her mouth tilted up to belay that she knew exactly what she was implying.
“Uh, um...” he said eloquently.
“I think I've found a new niiiiicknaaaame,” she sing-songed, her head bopping left and right.
“So, Lava boy, let me hear your favourite track before class starts already.”
Nathaniel fumbled for the controls on his phone while simultaneously fighting down the flush of pink dusting across his cheeks and darkening with every second. He had just started the song he liked best when Chloé rested her head against his shoulder to listen. He jumped a little and his phone flew out of his hand. He grappled with it comically for a second as he desperately tried to get a good hold of it before it finally hit the courtyard floor, pulling the buds from their ears as it went.
He groaned as Chloé moved to let him pick it up, eyeing the nasty crack in the screen as he did so. He ran his finger across the raised line and wondered if it would affect the functions or just be an eyesore for the next year until his parents let him have a new model.
“That was my fault, wasn't it?” she asked with a tremor to her voice.
“Nah,” he said, “you didn't do anything wrong. Don't worry about it.”
“But, I... surprised you,” she said, sounding guilty, “If you're free after school I'll take you to the person daddy has fix my phone when I drop it. They can usually fix a small crack like that in a couple of hours and I'll pay for it since it was my fault? I'll even buy you a coffee to make up for it?”
“Um, okay. Thanks,” he said blinking back at her genuine look of remorse.
“Great!” she squealed as her face broke out in a victorious smirk. She jumped up from the bench and moved backwards a few steps away from him as he watched with bewilderment. Her sudden movement and squeal had attracted a few onlookers from the courtyard and his eyes flickered around to make brief contact with some of his classmates. Amongst the small crowd he spotted Ivan, Mylène and Juleka who all regarded Chloé with barely hidden suspicion and Adrien and Nino who simply looked confused. He glanced back up at Chloé as her gaze completed the same circuit of people watching them before she narrowed her eyes seductively at him and winked.
“Then it's a date!” she announced loudly before turning on her heel and heading for the stairs to head to class.
There was a moment of complete, utter silence as everyone processed the blonde's words before turning in unison to stare at the red-headed, red-faced boy sitting wide-eyed and stunned on the bench before them.
So... Chloé had just sort-of asked him on a date. And he had unknowingly agreed. Which was sort-of terrifying, but not in the way he expected it to be. Which in of itself was vaguely terrifying too. And on top of that, she'd made sure everyone had known about it. Chloé Bourgeois wasn't trying to hide the fact that she liked him.
“Come on,” a gruff voice said.
Nath felt a hand rest on his shoulder and looked up with dazed eyes at Ivan.
“What?”
“It's time for class,” the larger boy told him, “You can freak out after roll call when no one can see you behind me. But right now, you're going to be late.”
“Right...” he said, still not in full control of his mental facilities but allowing his friend to guide him towards the stairs and the classroom.
Now if he could just make it past Chloé's desk without collapsing he could at least tally up one win for the morning.
Buy Me A Coffee?
Thomas Astruc has pointed out that the emblem on Nath’s t-shirt is based on the band Magma’s symbol so I glanced at their Wikipedia page and discovered they have their own language for their music. I thought it appropriate that Nathaniel like their music.
