Whumpee stared at the tarot deck, spread out face-down across the table. “I prefer to call it gambling.”

“Gambling has its rewards.”

“And what are my odds like? Which are your good cards? And…” They swallowed. “What happens if I pick something like Death?”

“You’ll just have to use your imagination. Come on, choose. Don’t make me select one for you.”

Whumpee nudged one of the cards with a shaking finger. “That one?”

“Turn it over, then.”

Whumpee took a deep breath. Turned it over. Suddenly found their throat too dry to swallow.

“Ah, the Hanged Man. One of the most intriguing cards in the Major Arcana.”

“I don’t know—I don’t know what you mean by that. I don’t know what it means.”

“It means fun for me.” Whumper swept the other cards into a rough pile. “The only question is…”

Their breath tickled Whumpee’s ear.

Whumpee had sat next to Whumper all night for the past week. By day three, Whumpee wasn't sure where reality and dreams began and ended. All they could remember were hands, cheers or jeers, drinks, and drugs.

"Do it. If you pass out again I'll tie you to the balcony."

Whumpee obeyed. They stumbled down the stairs. Up the stairs. They floated around the tables, pushed and pulled without being able to think. They became one with the air in the room; feeling like they were no longer alive, but somehow still clinging to life.

They stared down at the green felt of the table, one arm in Whumper's as they stopped a sliding card from the dealer and turned it over.

Whumpee looked around at the blurring lights and the mass of people that moved through the casino, falling on the individual faces that surrounded their table before settling on one.

Their blood ran cold; and the face stared at them. Icy blue eyes. Their lips curled up in a smile.

"S-sir," Whumpee turned their head and whispered.

Whumper leaned their head in.

"I-I think they are staring at m-me."

Whumper looked at where Whumpee was gesturing, and they smiled. Turning their head to Whumpee and gently touching their hand that was grasping Whumper's arm firmly.

"Of course they are," Whumper replied, glancing back at the table as the dealer pushed out a few more cards, "because of last night."

Whumpee's arm tightened around Whumper's.

Whumper understood and a chuckle escaped their lips.

"You don't remember, hm?"

"I-" Whumpee swallowed the growing lump in their throat, "I don't know w-what you mean..."

"The fact you're uneasy at the sight of them confirms my suspicions," Whumper grabbed their drink and took a sip as the walls began to crash down around Whumpee; decreasing their vision to a pin-point, directly upon the other's face.

"Don't worry, pet," Whumper tapped Whumpee's hand again before pressing their lips to their ear, "I'll make sure they pay with their life."

“I don't know what you mean,” Hiccup said, evasively.

 “Hiccup, stop your crap,” Snotlout replied. He shook his head, and crossed his arms.

 “Snotlout, you must be mistaken. I do not have a gambling problem! Just ask Astrid!” Hiccup exclaimed.

 Snotlout frowned at Hiccup.

 Fishlegs had told Snotlout that he had spotted Hiccup going into a local casino. And had seen scratch-off tickets lying around Hiccup’s house. And Fishlegs wouldn’t lie. Fishlegs wouldn’t spread rumors like that. Why would Fishlegs say something like that if it wasn’t true?

 It was simply impossible for Fishlegs to be lying about something like that, especially about Hiccup.

 So, it had to be true.

 And Hiccup was gaslighting him.

   Hiccup handed Astrid a stack of scratch-off tickets, lottery tickets, and other gambling-adjacent paraphernalia.

 “I want you to take these and have Stormfly burn them until they’re ashes,” Hiccup said.

 “You know, you also have a dragon,” Astrid rightfully pointed out.

 “I don’t want Toothless to know about this. Snotlout’s been opening his mouth about what he thinks is going on and the last thing I want is for Toothless to bolster Snotlout’s claims,” Hiccup replied. “He might find one and give it to Snotlout or something.”

 Astrid frowned. She couldn’t help but think how paranoid this was. This was overly elaborate.

 And he was worried that Toothless would somehow betray him. Toothless.

 Her heart ached at that thought.

 That should have been unthinkable.

 She took the items anyway.

   Snotlout practically growled when he exclaimed, “Why are you lying to me?!” at Astrid.

 Astrid had just stated that Snotlout was clearly wrong, that Hiccup did not have a gambling problem, that Snotlout was a muttonhead for even thinking that.

 The gaslighting was starting to really piss him off, too. Especially since it was clear that Astrid was complicit.

“Do I look alright?” asked Whumpee, stumbling over to the couch and steading themself on the arm.

Whumper nodded, his eyes watching Whumpee’s hands and arms to keep tension. “You look fine to me.”

“I feel weird,” Whumpee muttered to themself.

“Here, have another drink,” said Whumper, holding out the third bottle of the night to Whumpee. “I’ll grab you something to eat, your sugar is probably low, that’s all.”

Whumpee took the bottle and flumped down onto the sofa, watching the ceiling dance as they sipped from it. Maybe they were just drunk, but they weren’t usually a lightweight.

As the ceiling continued to dance like the fireflies outside, Whumpee tried to think. Think anything. But their mind felt full of treacle, hard and slow effort to work their way through.

Whumper returned, chocolate bar in hand and broke off a square before sitting on the edge of the sofa next to Whumpee’s legs.

“There’s really not something right with me,” Whumpee mumbled as they took the square of chocolate from Whumper.

Whumper smiled and shook his head. “I don’t know what you mean.”

the funniest meltdown ive ever had was in college when i got so overstimulated that i could Not speak, including over text. one of my friends was trying to talk me through it but i was solely using emojis because they were easier than trying to come up with words so he started using primarily emojis as well just to make things feel balanced. this was not the Most effective strategy... until. he tried to ask me "you okay?" but the way he chose to do that was by sending "👉🏼👌🏼❓" and i was so shocked by suddenly being asked if i was dtf that i was like WHAT???? WHAT DID YOU JUST SAY TO ME?????????? and thus was verbal again

like... it's so clear they've never stood in the middle of an art museum and felt like crying, looking at a piece that somehow cuts into your marrow even though the artist and you are separated by space and time. they've never looked at a poem - once, twice, three times - just because the words feel like a fired gun, something too-close, clanging behind your eyes. they've never gotten to the end of the movie and had to arrive, blinking, back into their body, laughing a little because they were holding their breath without realizing.

... how do i explain to you - you can make AI that does a perfect job of imitating me. you could disseminate it through the entire world and make so much money, using my works and my ideas and my everything.

i don't know there's a word for it. in high school, we become aware that the way we feel about our artform is a cliche - it's like breathing. over and over, artists all feel the same thing. "i write because i need to" and "my music is how i speak" and "i make art because it's either that or i stop existing." it is such a common experience, the violence and immediacy we mean behind it is like breathing to me - comes out like a useless understatement. it's a cliche because we all feel it, not because the experience isn't actually persistent. so many of us have this ... fluttering urgency behind our ribs.

i'm not doing it for the money. for a star on the ground in some city i've never visited. i am doing it because when i was seven i started taking notebooks with me on walks. i am doing it because in second grade i wrote a poem and stood up in front of my whole class to read it out while i shook with nerves. i am doing it because i spent high school scribbling all my feelings down. i am doing it for the 16 year old me and the 18 year old me and the today-me, how we can never put the pen down. you can take me down to a subatomic layer, eviscerate me - and never find the source of it; it is of me. when i was 19 i named this blog inkskinned because i was dramatic and lonely and it felt like the only thing that was actually permanently-true about me was that this is what is inside of me, that the words come up over everything, coat everything, bloom their little twilight arias into every nook and corner and alley

"we're gonna replace you". that is okay. you think that i am writing to fill a space. that someone said JOB OPENING: Writer Needed, and i wrote to answer. you think one raindrop replaces another, and i think they're both just falling. you think art has a place, that is simply arrives on walls when it is needed, that is only ever on demand, perfect, easily requested. you see "audience spending" and "marketability" and "multi-line merch opportunity"

and i see a kid drowning. i am writing to make her a boat. i am writing because what used to be a river raft has long become a fully-rigged ship. i am writing because you can fucking rip this out of my cold dead clammy hands and i will still come back as a ghost and i will still be penning poems about it.

it isn't even love. the word we use the most i think is "passion". devotion, obsession, necessity. my favorite little fact about the magic of artists - "abracadabra" means i create as i speak. we make because it sluices out of us. because we look down and our hands are somehow already busy. because it was the first thing we knew and it is our backbone and heartbreak and everything. because we have given up well-paying jobs and a "real life" and the approval of our parents. we create because - the cliche again. it's like breathing. we create because we must.

A boom cracked through the air like thunder, and Ereshkigal could only assume Imatar had flown off at a speed that created a vacuum in the air. She paused to divine the magics of the others, and sensed Melusine’s was still nearby, meaning the Passionate Wind had gone off on their own. Was it their own idea or Melusine’s? From experience, she would say the latter.

Ereshkigal hesitated, then reached out once more to detect the flicker of Agni’s power. And once again there was an emptiness that threatened to consume her.

She should go back. Check on Melusine, who was likely having a breakdown. But she kept walking towards the town they passed on the flight in, admonishing herself for not having Imatar drop her off closer. It was going to be midnight by the time she got there, and small places like that tended to button up early.

She inhaled, held it, exhaled. Her breath shook and she shoved all thought away.

One step in front of the other until she came to a dirt road, just a couple of wheel ruts in the dirt. Though she wasn’t tired, she sat down, her fingers playing with the grass. Her mind was empty, even her emotions seemed outside of her. Her fingers slid back and forth across the blades, back and forth. Dry like paper, they tickled her palms.

The Knights had been granted three boons: immortality, agelessness, and physical resilience, and what remained of the magic they sold their souls they could use as they saw fit. Her memories of the first days after waking were muddy, and back then she had not had the ability to use divination on her own mind to allow her to recall anything at will. Resilience, immortality, and agelessness were branded forever on her body, and right now the pain from that bargain stung sharply.
