A Eulogy for my Playstation 4 Pro
Tumblr media
So since I was a brain genius who decided to transfer all my fundraiser money to my bank account on a weekend, let's have a little eulogy for my poor Playstation 4 Pro.
I bought it in 2017 after a hellish move from Colorado to Nevada. We'd lived in Colorado for 26 years, and rented the same house for 24 of those years. I literally grew up in that house. Then our landlords got greedy (as all landlords eventually do), almost tripled our rent, and we had to move.
One of the last things I did before I packed up my computer was release The Definitive Way to Play Sonic Adventure on Youtube. That video was a modest success, but it had a secondary effect where a no-commentary gameplay video I'd uploaded for the fangame Sonic Utopia got picked up by the algorithm as a result, and that video suddenly took off like wildfire. I found myself sitting on a pair of videos that were about to pull in close to a combined 3 million views. It was the most I'd had a video blow up in a very long time.
I was now flush with a few thousand dollars of cash that I could do whatever I wanted with. That was great, as I got to help cover some moving expenses. I gave my Mom some money, I paid one of the deposits on our new apartment, paid to fix some stuff that got broken in the move, I bought myself a new desk, new computer chair, some storage shelves, a new bed frame, and still had about $700 left to spare. So I bought a PS4 Pro and a small handful of games (The Nathan Drake Collection, Yakuza Kiwami, The Last of Us Remastered, and Parappa the Rapper Remastered, I think). It was the first true next-generation console I'd bought in 11 years -- I'd had a Wii U, but that doesn't count.
Within that first year, I'd already run into my first problem with that Playstation 4. Back in the Xbox 360 era, I had a moment in my life where I was a psychopath that was running a media server off my PC. Every morning I'd wake up, download everything my Youtube subs had posted the day before, along with whatever GiantBomb had uploaded that day, and threw it up on the media server. The 360 could see the server, and those downloads would basically become my background noise for the day. I watched the entire GiantBomb Persona 4 Endurance Run that way: on the 360, through my media server. For context, these were the days before there was any way to watch Youtube on a television. There was no app. Youtube was just a website. So the Media Server was what I had to do to see Youtube on another screen.
In the move out to Nevada, I'd bought a cheap 32GB USB thumbdrive from the back-to-school section at Wal-mart and filled it full of movies and videos and stuff. With the PS4 set up, I plugged that thumbdrive in and tried out the PS4's media player capabilities, hoping it worked like the Xbox 360.
It did... for about 45 minutes. In the middle of watching Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Movie the media player suddenly crashed and refused to see the USB thumbdrive anymore. I reached down to pull it out only to find it was almost too hot to touch. I might have actually dropped the thumbdrive because it shocked me just how hot it was. I have never felt a piece of electronics be that hot before.
For the rest of that day, that USB port was dead. Nothing you plugged into it would be recognized. Eventually, it finally started working with controllers, but it never accepted any other thumbdrives, ever.
After about three years, I started to notice recordings were starting to get a little weird. Clips I'd record of my Fortnite matches would have huge 2-3 second chunks go missing, or the encoding would corrupt and smear. But then it went away, so I figured maybe it was just a problem with the game and not the console. It'd come back every now and then, maybe once a year, but it only ever happened with Fortnite, and only occasionally.
About a year and a half ago, I started to notice something else weird. Unless there was a specific game I needed to play for work stuff (like Sonic Frontiers or whatever), my PS4 was mostly just a Fortnite machine, and mainly because the PC version of Fortnite is a disaster.
But for months I'd left a disc in my PS4's disc drive. I think it was probably Balan Wonderworld or something, and as I booted up Fortnite for my daily founder's mission rewards, I noticed a sound. I'd been hearing it on and off for a while, but now I was finally paying attention to it. I realized: the console was sitting there scanning the disc, over and over and over, like it couldn't read it. I'd hear the disc motor spin up, the soft click-click-click as the read head scanned for data. It'd spin down, spin up, click-click-click, whirrrrrr, click-click, spin down, spin up, etc. Over and over. It'd do this for a good 30-45 seconds, then finally settle down and identify the disc.
The first time I noticed this, I ejected the Balan disc and put in something else; I think it was Dreams. PS4 read the disc instantly. I shrugged, figured maybe the Balan disc was just cursed and didn't think anything of it.
About a week later, I caught it doing it with the disc for Dreams. And then Sonic Frontiers. Then Sonic Superstars. Pretty much any disc I'd put in there. As the months wore on, it started taking multiple minutes for it to identify the disc.
A few weeks before it died, I ended up taking the disc out and basically resigning myself to only putting a disc in if I was going to play it, and removing that disc the moment I was done, because that scanning process seemed like it was making the problem worse.
A few months before it died, I got a full hardware crash on the console. The error code it gave me pointed to a hardware failure, but a google revealed that it was a generic error code that could mean literally anything. Right around this time, the video corruption in my Fortnite recordings came back around. I had a feeling it was the HDD.
Thus began the saga of trying to replace my PS4's HDD. I knew it could take SSDs, so I did some research, saved up $100, and bought a 2TB SSD that was compatible with the console. Followed Sony's official instructions on replacing the HDD, and...
It didn't work.
I vowed to get my money back and order a different HDD, but prices went up and realizing the other mounting problems with this machine (including the fried USB port), and my general mood overall, I just kept the money and figured I'd ride or die until the machine breathed its last.
8 months later... it refused to boot up at all.
Rest in piece, king. The only other console I've ever had straight up die on me like this was my Xbox 360, and if I'm being honest, I kind of smothered that poor boy a little bit hoping to get a sturdier console back from the repair center.
(I did not, but that's a story for another day.)

Backlog Reviews 2024: Bionicle the Game
Tumblr media
Platform: GameCube
January 12th, 2024-February 28th, 2024(incomplete)
So…This is a fucking disappointment.
Now, Bionicle is literally a franchise that has defined my life. I love the lore, my iconography when it isn't an ass is a Kanohi Hau, and I have many of the toys. Heck, I even have a storyboard from the second movie!
Tumblr media
However, I never had a console that could run this back when it was new, I never gave the PC version a go, and even after we got our Wii with backwards compatability, it was YEARS before I got it Gamecube ready.
But I always had a curiousity with it, since it was advertised in the Bionicle: Mask of Light VHS I grew up with. It looked, frankly, amazing to kid me, and I REALLY wanted to play that level with Tahu Nuva surfing on lava. Always loved that scene in the movie, and Tahu Nuva was my first Bionicle, so makes sense.
Tumblr media
So this year, 21 years since it was released, I finally sat down and played it, and…
Most of it is just OKAY…With a cheat.
Basically, this game's only form of attack is a sort of weird energy blast that takes forever to charge. In fact, when testing the rom, I played Tahu's stage legit, and I just felt silly jumping all over the place and shooting off a blast when the thing finally filled enough to shoot. So, for my own sanity, I grabbed a cheat that gives me infinite energy, which made everything WAY more managable.
Tumblr media
Though this does expose the game's weak shield gimmick as not all that helpful, since most enemies barely hit you, and your health points regenerate fairly quickly after you defeat them, so why not cut the shield and just give us infinite blasts? It's way more fun that way.
Moreover, the game also has a "Nuva blast" technique that is so finicky that you'll probably not find yourself able to do it consistently even once you figure it out. It's like, hold down the shield button to charge up energy, then press another button(Y, in my case)right as you let go for a small shockwave effect. Yeah, only really useful when they force it on you.
Though another big hinderance may be that this game was not at ALL optimized for the Gamecube controller. I'm of the opinion that the Gamecube controller isn't right for ALL games, but it's the best option for all the games it works in. And the fairly simple controls of this game SHOULD work out, but literally the only good button is A as the jump button. B is shield, X is the shoot button, and Y is for special attacks and actions. L and R are used as secondary camera rotation buttons(that barely even worked for me, and I don't think that was a controller problem), and Z seems to be unused.
Tumblr media
And this layout is a nightmare!
X in particular should be reserved only for actions that you don't need to do as much, it should not be the MAIN firing button, especially if you need to use Shield and Shoot TOGETHER, as it seems it wants you to do.
My layout would keep jump as A, but make B the Shoot Button, put Shield on the shoulder buttons(you only need the stick for the limited camera in this game), and keep Y as special. Just my opinion.
Though Idk how much it would help the sluggish movement and turning speeds of this game. It was DREADFUL getting anywhere in this game! I actually started playing my next game, Batman Arkham Asylum, in the middle of this, and the difference in control fluidity was staggering. Felt like an N64 game.
This could've been a frame rate problem, though. I noticed that the PS2 footage I occasionally checked out was a lot smoother than mine, so I think they just didn't want to optimize anything for GC. Also had a recurring glitch where the music would just cut out at random points in the level. Not sure what was up with that.
Tumblr media
As for the story…
What story?
Things just HAPPEN in this game with no rhyme or reason! First the Bohrok attack for two levels, then we're fighting the Kal, then we're fighting Rahkshi! Sonic Mania had more of a cohesive narrative than this, and Sonic Mania doesn't have a damn narrative!
youtube
And honestly, I could put up with all of this for most of the game! I was just happy to be experiencing a new-to-me piece of Bionicle media! I love Bionicle so much that I was willing to put up with a bit of bullshit!
But then came the Tahu Nuva level. The one I had been looking forward to for a good chunk of my life. Finally, I could experience lava surfing with Tahu like I always wanted to! I had this experience with the Toy Story 3 video game back in the day where I would just sit down in the Woody's Round-up mini-game and just ride Bullseye around town until I got tired, or the game crashed(it was on Wii). But still, the experience of getting to embody that part of one of my heroes was unforgettable.
And this level is completely broken.
Half of the things you're meant to shoot don't let you target them, shit keeps on getting in your way with no way to avoid them, and the Rahkshi will just randomly decide to be completely out of your firing range at certain points. The shot will fire, they will seem in range, but it never hits. And naturally, the defeat cutscene is unskippable.
Tumblr media
Yeah.
So, I finally had to just give up. My heart was broken. I'm sad about this. So long, I'd wanted to do this…Guess I'll be waiting a while longer.
3/10
Next up is the one I've already started: Batman Arkham Asylum on PC. See ya then!

Tell us about your top five favourite video games! ❤️
Oh thank you so much for this ask, friend! I'm super excited to answer :D I will list them from fifth to first!
5th: This spot goes to Mario Party 8! I have a lot of fond memories of this game. Where I grew up, it was a very popular one for families to have for the Wii, and it was something we could play in large groups. It's silly and funny and there's not a lot you have to do to understand what's going on. The reason this isn't higher on my list is just simply because, in my opinion, it's only really fun when you play with others. Playing alone or just vs the computer is not really fun at all.
4th: Sims 4 is in fourth place. I really enjoy this game because it's pretty versatile in terms of how you can play it. You can use it simply to build homes (which is mostly what I'm doing right now; building and decorating is so much fun!), play out storylines that come with the base game and/or expansion packs (apparently there's quite a bit of actual lore, which is something I only learned a few months ago!) or even make your own crazy story-lines (currently: I have a family of vampires with one human member who desperately wants to be turned, an Elder vampire who just wants to raise a good vampire family, a young adult vampire who thrives being a vampire and is trying to seduce Vladislaus Straud, and a third young adult vampire who is desperate to be as human as possible and loves all things about humanity...and then I have another "family" where one woman was jealous of another's beauty so she tricked her into staying in a tower and I'm currently playing through as her, only able to befriend the people her captor invites over, and trying to convince one of them to "join" the family so she can get them to free her and run away with her and start a new family in a cozy magic cottage somewhere...). Possibilities are really endless, and that's what I love about it. But, the game is rough on my PC, and it sometimes lags or has issues where it doesn't load properly, or something doesn't register right, so sometimes I have to exit out and restart or try again a different day. It also can't seem to decide if it wants me to use keyboard controls or mouse controls. Some days right clicking rotates objects. Some days right clicking moves my screen. It is a Frustration.
3rd: Third place goes to Danganronpa! I really enjoy this series. As of now, I have played the first two games and part of Ultra Despair Girls. The mysteries are very fun, the storyline is interesting, and I think all the character designs are so unique and dynamic! I have a few favourite characters who won my heart fairly instantly, and I really love replaying chapters where they are more present in the story-line. I love all the art fandom has made for it, and I love the fanfics too! Free time events give more information and insight about the characters and the storyline even after the gameplay is finished, and that makes me really happy. After all, I am a sucker for character development and backstory.
2nd: Skyrim is in second place!! I used to play this game a bit more faithfully when I lived with my parents and had access to my brother's xbox. And a tv. I do not currently have a tv, as you know, friend, and I do all my gaming at the current time on my laptop and/or my phone. Anyway; Skyrim. It makes me really really happy. I love the fact that I can become a Vampire Lord, or a Werewolf, I can be the Arch-Mage of the College of Winterhold, I can learn to be a bard, I can join the Theives' Guild, I can join the Dark Brotherhood, I choose which side I'm on in a civil war, I can adopt children, and have many houses...and those are all Side Quests (except the civil war, which can be done as a side quest or as part of the main story depending on how you play, if I recall correctly). Like, those aren't even the main quest. I never finished the main quest because I was too busy off doing side quests for rewards so I could buy pretty clothes and fun toys for my two children and then I would spend time with them and play tag and hide and seek like a good dad (I played as a male Dunmer). I genuinely miss this game, and trust me it will be the first one I purchase when I have a TV and Xbox of my own.
1st: First place goes to....Twisted Wonderland! Right now, that is the game I play the most, and it is the one I'm most focused on. I love the story and the characters. There's an interesting plot going on, and I am eager to know what happens next. The events and side stories are very entertaining (though I haven't been able to play as many events as I would've liked because I had a rough past year) and provide a deeper look at a lot of characters! I love Character Development!!!!!!! And I enjoy how different characters end up interacting with each other in the events, it fleshes out the world a bit and keeps the houses/dorms from feeling too divided or closed off. Like, it helps provide that sense of over-arching storytelling, rather than allowing each dorm's story to feel disjointed and not connected to the others. I really enjoy that. On top of all of that, there are fun rhythm games and minigames, battles you can fight daily, and other little cool features that I really enjoy and that allow me to "play" the game daily without feeling like I have to devote a whole bunch of time to it if I have a busier day ahead of me. I also really love the official art; it's all so pretty and wonderful. They really did a great job with the character art and the art for the different cards.
Thanks again for the ask, friend! It was fun to answer!

Nintendo pee pee
I got Mario Galaxy 2 in maybe 2010? and it's easily my favourite Wii game. we didn't have the first one, so my brother and i grew up with 2 and we were absolutely in love with it.
the level design, gameplay, colourful graphics and music all meshed together perfectly to create a game we would never get sick of. the controls were super responsive, and i think one of the best uses of the Wiimote's functionality since Wii Sports.
i remember the school holidays and weekends when he and i would try to wake up earlier than each other so we could be the first to play it, those were really good times.
in 2017 i found a copy of Galaxy 1 on the shelf at EB Games and i immediately bought it because i'd never seen it in stores before, and when i played it i was just like "this is just Galaxy 2 but without Yoshi", which pissed you off because you always felt like Galaxy 2 was a weak dlc (wrong opinion btw). having grown up for so long with the sequel gave me a really strange frame of reference for what to expect from Galaxy 1 because i ended up feeling like 1 was the sequel instead, and a slightly weaker one at that.
both are excellent games, but Galaxy 2 will always be my pick. i miss playing the Wii, I brought it with me when i moved out but i need a new power cord for it because i left it at home so my brother could play his Wii
ask me about a console and i'll tell you about a game on it i like!

I feel like Nintendo makes their hardware soley so they can make games. It explains a whole fuck of a lot. Like their stance on emulation, what’s the top games played in emulation that are exclusive to the console? Nintendo.
Why did they make the Wii U? Because they believed the Wii could keep going if it was mildly upgraded. Why the second screen? Honestly it feels like they thought ‘Oh hey that’ll open the door to potential for developers!’ Without actually really making sure it could be genuinely effective or fun or worth much. Otherwise, A second screen??? Our Developers can have a field day wit- Starfox comes out
Why is the Switch Portable? Because they still wanted a console with innovation, but realized soley focusing on making their consoles “only control this way” was terrible compared to focusing on making their consoles “Only Play, this way” Which even then they failed slightly at by swapping the buttons around incompetently. Look me in the eyes, and tell me when you press the B button, you don’t imagine the A button.
It explains why the Wii U was underpowered, that shit was INSANE to them having literally never made a game utilizing that kind’ve power. It also explains why they ported a ton of (honestly just outdated) games. They never made the console with the developers in mind at other companies. Only themselves. So port away, making a game is impossible because we’re weaker than the PSfuckin3, so just port COD over hundreds of times while we pump out Hyrule Warriors, Mario Kart, and attempt to roll out BOTW before giving up and focusing on the switch version more.
It explains why the Wii lasted so long, Why the Wii U was compatible with Wii hardware and software, why it was fuckin titled that: The company genuinely thought their developers could still utilize the Wii’s capabilities that by then were as close to VR as anyone would get. Of course bring technical innovation along, our developers can use it!
Now, that’s respectable, that’s fine, I’m not criticizing it as I’m not remotely able to, but for sure, Nintendo makes Hardware so they can make Software.
IMO, 10 years from now, Nintendo may just say fuck it and stop making consoles all together. Look Me In The Eyes, And Tell Me any of their consoles have had anywhere near the same value to you as all their competition.
You put the Wii in your closet in 2011, your gamecube was sold because your Wii could play the games, you don’t have an Snes or NES because you have emulation or Nintendo version of. You sold the WIi U because HAHAHAH, and the switch, depending on who you are, is either sitting next to your TV collecting dust in the living room, or you bring it with you everywhere and use it for an hour or 2. Of course there’s variants but for the most part, you bought it, played a few games thought it was semi impressive, quickly grew bored because every game on there is elsewhere and better so why buy them on switch, and moved on.
Meanwhile, Mario, Zelda, fucking name em, they’re still relevant and probably better than ever. The consoles are an obstacle to nintendo, and always have been. They aren’t competing, they aren’t trying to do anything but what they want.
And I can genuinely respect that. I just wish Nintendo could give their philosophy on such a concept between software and hardware. Because to me it looks like their software came first, hardware second, and unfortunately, they’ve needed to swap them around for a long time now.

Can I request a fluffy Joe Mazzello x fem. reader oneshot where Joe surprises reader and proposes and it’s all sweet and romantic?
Forever and Ever (A Joe Mazzello Fluff!)
Warnings: Language
Tumblr media
You know when you meet someone and they waste no time in pushing every single button you have no matter how many times you shout: FUCKING STOP! Well that was Joe for me.
We’d know each other since we were kids and my God did he never cease to annoy me. ‘Course it didn’t help that our parents insisted on us becoming friends and even went as far as to arrange play dates. When we were fourteen he and his family came over. He was scheduled to film a movie and would be gone for a couple of months so our parents thought it best to squeeze in some time for us to hang before saying goodbye.
I was in my room playing on my Nintendo 64 when Joe walked in. “Hey.”
I peered over at him for a second. “Hey.” I was playing Mario Kart and once my current race was finished I held out my second controller. “Wanna race me?”
“Wanting to lose are we?”
“Big talk for a guy who can’t even beat a water level on Super Mario,” I teased.
“Y/N it’s a water level no one can fucking beat that,” he pointed out.
“Alright I’ll give you that,” I said flipping through the different race tracks.
“Tell me you’re not looking for Rainbow Road,” he whined.
“Okay I won’t,” I said finally landing on the infamous track o death.
“Wow okay sadist,” he said. “Remind me again why I’m marrying you?”
“Who the fuck said anything about us getting married?”
“Ouch,” he gasped. “You say that as if it would be a terrible idea.”
“Um, call me crazy but you actually have to be dating before you get married and last I checked we aren’t dating.”
“Yet,” he added.
“Awfully sure of yourself aren’t you?”
He smirked. “When it comes to us? You bet.”
He then drove his cart to the edge of the track squeezing passed me and knocking me off kilter.
“HEY NO CHEATING!”
“You’re the one that picked this bullshit track,” he said.
I got my cart back on track and sped up to catch up to him. When I did I nudged him to the side.
“OH NOW WHO’S CHEATING?!”
“You started it!” He then shoved his hand on my controller trying to stop me from getting to far. “Joe move it!” He didn’t though…. “JOEY!”
He knocked us both back onto my bed. “You fucking proud of yourself Mazzello?”
He rolled on top of me and smiled. “Definitely.” He then leaned in and brought his lips to mine. I froze, releasing my controller.
His lips were warm and sent a feeling coursing through that I’d never felt before… it’s like there was an ache within me and it could only be soothed by him. I kissed back bringing my arms up onto his back and curling my legs around him. After a while Joe pulled back breathless.
“I’m definitely marrying you one day,” he said.
“You’re supposed to say I love you,” I pointed out.
He pecked me on the lips. “I love you too.”
Years passed and Joe and I continued to grow and our feelings for each other became deeper and deeper over time.
One day during his off time from acting we were both sitting on the couch playing video games (because lord knows we never out grew our addiction). We were playing Mario Kart on the Wii U and this time we avoided the rainbow road like the plague (it’s gone up in bullshit levels since the 90’s).
“Okay if I win you’re on dish duty for a month,” I said.
“And if I win you gotta do whatever I want,” Joe said.
“What the fuck kind of a prize is that? Can’t you just ask for a months worth of sex like normal guys?”
“Who says sex won’t be a part of it?”
I rolled my eyes and sent my cart flying down the track.
“What the fuck? Have you been practicing?”
“Gotta do something fun in my off time,” I said. A while later I crossed the finish line not a foot or so behind Joe. “Dammit!”
Joe cheered and hooted.
“Alright what do you want? Lap dance, blow job..?”
“I actually had something else in mind. Though if you say yes then we will have forever for sexy stuff.”
I raised an eyebrow at him. “Say yes to..?” He then pulled out a small box from his pocket. He lifted the lid revealing a small ring with a beautiful diamond in the middle. I gasped and tears sprung from my eyes.
“Y/N I love you forever and ever. You give me strength and hope, and are insanely good in bed…” I smacked him on the shoulder. He laughed. “And you are the most beautiful, smart, and fucking amazing woman I know...so please, pretty please with a raptor on top, marry me?”
“YES, YES, A MILLION FUCKING TIMES YES!” We kissed hard and he slipped the ring on. I crawled onto his lip and snuggled into him. “I love you so fucking much Joey.”
“I love you too, Y/N Mazzello,” he said before carrying me to our bedroom.

ೃ  my nav  →  my mha writing masterlist  → my katsuki bakugo x reader smau
ೃ  please do reblog if you enjoyed!! it really helps writers and content creators on tumblr!  if you want to be a part of my mha taglist. send me an ask!  ♡
Tumblr media
You like to save things. Silly things. Ribbons. Polaroids taken during the summer. Old candy wrappers to put behind your phone case. Most especially love letters. Of all the things you save, your love letters are some of your most prized possessions. you keep your letters in a white hatbox your mother bought from a vintage store downtown that sells all kind of things.
They aren’t love letters that someone else wrote for you; You think that you don’t have those. Because you think that no one has fallen in love with you. No being on this vast earth has had their heart beat 120 times a minute walking past you. In contrast to your ever so wandering eyes. These letters are ones you’ve written using your hand and heart. These are times you’ve written a letter expressing endearment-whether shallow or deep, each one towards a different person.
When you write, you hold nothing back. you write like he’ll never read it. Because he never will. Every secret thought, every careful observation, everything you’ve saved up inside yourself, You put it all in the letter. When you’re done, you seal it, address it, and then you put it in your hatbox.
They’re not love letters in the strictest sense of the word. These letters are for when you don’t want to be in love anymore. When you’re tired of falling for him. They’re for bidding goodbye. Because after you write your letter, you are no longer consumed by your all consuming love. it doesn’t keep you up at night anymore, it doesn’t remind you of him every time you sing along to love songs, it doesn’t make you think of how he wants his breakfast cooked, it doesn’t plague your mind like the homework and tasks you’ve ended up missing...
it gives you peace and closure.
that’s truly the meaning of the letters.
they’re supposed to set you free.
but do they really?
Tumblr media
You open up your hatbox, looking for the letter that you wrote to Katsuki all those years ago.
Once you had found it, you take it out, as the letter was still neatly kept, and wrapped tightly with a light coral bow. You absently smile when you notice the little stickers of the sanrio character badtzbadtzmaru (a character that reminded you so much of him) and pastel red polco stickers attached to the sides. you place the letter on your desk, contemplating on whether or not you should be reading it as you first reminisce why you fell in love with him in the first place.
the two of you were childhood friends.
It was a cliché at it’s finest, but your whole family was a little in love with him despite his rather pompous and airy attitude. he was the cheeky yet adorable only son of your next-door neighbors who came over after classes to play just dance, or smash bros on the wii with you. during the summer, the two of you would play, camp outside of your houses, go out on picnics and go stargazing at night, and he’d always try his best to cheer you up whenever you were feeling down. there was always a grumpy and gruff tone to his voice when he’s trying to be soft and nice yet, there was always genuine love behind those words.
but, most importantly, he made you feel special. and not in the way that you felt like he was your responsibility but because despite his attitude, constant brags and whatnot, doubled with his other “friends” constantly hyping him up, further inflating his ego...
You were his reminder to stay on the the ground.
You were there for him to open up to you, to share his struggles and insecurities and to just bare his heart to you. his quirk was powerful and so was his personality, but, his heart only became as strong as his physical capabilities because of you.
But... what happened?
The second year of Middle School happened.
Katsuki became a shell of a person he once was.
He still retained his explosive personality but due to the grueling peer pressure that the Middle School hierarchy brings upon you, he became an asshole who could care less about others, began to bully a seaweed-haired kid your age who just moved in next door, and started to always put himself on a pedestal.
He was like an Icarus who was flying too close to the sun... and so the two of you drifted apart.
Just like that.
Then, he moved away that same year, due to the demanding jobs and occupation of his parents.
Gone without even having a chance to say your proper goodbyes to him.
With a heavy sigh, you finally began to read the contents of the letter you wrote for him when he left. As soon as you realized your crush on him was more than just within the confines of puppy love; you brought out a pen and some crafted paper, and wrote to your heart’s content.
Tumblr media
Dear Katsuki Bakugo,
Remember that scene in Lilo and Stitch where Lilo prays for someone to be her friend, asking for the “nicest angel you have.” and Stitch comes crashing down from the sky into her backyard?
That is the best way to describe how you came into my life.
When I was a little kid, I only noticed the most bizarre features and facets to your personality. The way you scrunch your nose, your facial expressions like that of a gremlin, your cool quirk, and your loud personality... but as I grew older, I noticed a lot of more things.
I noticed how spiky yet soft your hair was, your passionate crimson eyes that are so full of confidence yet burdened with responsibility, your quirk that became more than just explosions with how you would tell me the science behind it, the way you would talk to me and soften your very loud voice, and how you would even let me win a video game even though you hated losing.
I’ve learned to look at you in a different light because I’ve fallen in love with you.
You were like a tiny spark ever since I met you. Effervescent, bright, always appearing, and always beaming. Like a crackle of lightning. You shined bright for others in your own little ways. Constantly growing and glowing brighter like the feelings I had for you.
Ever since, your presence in my life was like a burst of beautiful fireworks popping inside my heart whenever I would think about you.
However... even though we both started as no one but just little kids, holding hands, and trying to traverse this maze called life...
and now you’re all; your worth will rise, the more I fall.
I realized that you didn’t need me anymore.
Like these mementos we have stored, all these these memories we share.
once were things —
now nothing anymore.
We promised each other with our pinkies intertwined that we would embark on this adventure to become heroes together.
yet, what happened?
Katsuki, Suki, Suki-kun...
If the boy I used to love and cherish with all my heart would come back again... then I wish things could come back again to the way they once were.
May it be in another day, another year, another time, or even another universe...
Please come back as the sparkle of light in my life again.
                                                                                                                          Sincerely,
 (Y/N)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“(Y/N)!” The soft voice of your mother echoes around the house. “Katsuki-kun and his parents just moved back next door? Why don’t you say hi?”
“H-how?” You whisper to yourself, peeking through the window and seeing some moving boxes present in Katsuki’s old room. A familiar spiky-haired boy peaks through the window, noticing your wide-eyed gaze at him.
His eyebrows furrow, tilting his head slightly at the sight of seeing you.
These were the same crimson eyes, same hair, same old gremlin yet handsome face you’ve wanted to see again for such a long time.
This was it. It’s him.
“(Y/N)?”
“Katsuki-kun?”

something that makes me feel such. an Emotion. is thinking about the One small piece of long term nostalgia that i do have with Sonic the Hedgehog
I only became a “real” Sonic fan after I watched the movie two years ago. Before that point, between 10-13, I’d occasionally check out Sonic stuff and consider that it could be something I could attach myself to, but I never fixated on it, so I carried on with my life. I didn’t immediately cling onto the Sonic franchise after the movie (though I did love the film a lot!) and experienced the same limbo I felt in my previous attempts to understand everything about this Thing. It took maybe 2 weeks of just NON STOP EXPOSURE to as much content as possible until I was plowing through the IDW comics with genuine concern for the cast during the Metal Virus saga, and I found a character I hyperfocused on and gained a better understanding of the lore, dynamics, and story from, Knuckles! :]
It’s not like I’ve only had Sonic in my life between 14 and now though! As a younger kid I was just never exposed to all the usual stuff that got people hooked onto it around my age, like the games, Sonic X or even fan content online. I was one of THOSE kids who watched a handful of Sonic Underground and knew the cast through the Olympic game crossovers. That isn’t to say I think I’m a FAKE FAN because I got into this a little later into my childhood than others, but I just think it’s interesting that my past kind of stopped me from feeling like it was something I could ever enjoy with the childlike wonder and enthusiasm it was intended to evoke, kind of like how some (including myself) feel like Pokémon is something you can’t get attached to if you never grew up enjoying it as a child.
But I have one batch of Sonic memories that feel a little more universal. When I was 6, me and my brother got a Wii handed down to us from an older cousin. It came with a bunch of games, both discs and pre-installed through the Shop channel, and one of those games was Sonic 2. I was pretty bad at the 2D Mario games my brother was SCARILY good at for a young kid (he literally 100% speedran the game on at least four save files), but when I found This game and tried my hand at it, I took pride into the fact that I was better at Sonic. I loved the animations, the characters (Tails definitely contributed to my love for orange cat/fox characters), and facing off with my brother at those weird 3D looking sphere-hallway stages.
Thing is: I was not good at Sonic 2 at all. I would get through Emerald Hill Zone and just barely through Chemical Plant Act 1, and that was it. Couldn’t get passed that point no matter how hard I tried. Maybe the drowning spooked me, or I just didn’t discover how to use all the controls. It was something that taunted me for the rest of my childhood, and even when I was 12-13 and getting back into video games did it still stump me. I haven’t tried my hand at it again in a long time, but tbh I think it’s something I’ll struggle at forever by this point lol
So basically the one powerful piece of Sonic nostalgia that tugs on my heart and makes me feel fuzzy the way that all the other stuff I experienced as a small child was jamming to the Chemical Plant Zone instrumental. Over and over again. And I mean, it’s a BOP, but it’s interesting that it’s the *one* Sonic thing that makes me feel like this. It made playing Chemical Plant in Mania something very surreal. And I completely doubt it’ll happen but. If I were to hear that instrumental in the new movie. I think I’d actually cry. And I can’t believe that I have at least One Sonic Thing that can make me feel the same way that those who grew up with Everything in the franchise at their fingertips would at the hands of the current STH2 hype. It’s strange, but really, really special. aooueuuegghh

Aria wondered how long she’d go away for if she committed a septuple homicide.
The idea had taken root in the back of her mind several months ago, what with Chenle’s unfortunate habit of rolling while asleep and kicking her off (a) a couch, (b) a bed, and on one miraculous occasion, even a table.
Don’t ask how he managed to get his leg up that high - not even Aria knows. All she remembers is sitting on the edge of the table, perfectly content and minding her own business, before there was a foot being unceremoniously shoved into her back, and then she was on the floor.
The tiles are rather unforgiving, she discovered, when you face plant into them with no chance of stopping yourself from doing so, because you were pre-occupied with trying to not spill hot coffee over yourself and your companion, who had just veritably kicked her out of her sitting position moments beforehand.
Aria ended up with a bruised cheek, for her attempts, and Chenle still wouldn’t admit that he’d done it - claiming that she must have just fallen off herself. If she didn’t know any better, Aria would claim that Chenle had done it while he was awake, just out of spite.
He has resided at the bottom of her “Rescue In Case Of Fire” list ever since.
Donghyuck let out a great whoop of victory from his position in the middle of the living room floor, as his character - Baby Yoshi, in the tall booster seat car that he insisted didn’t give him an advantage, but Aria could swear that thing had a smaller turning circle than the rest of them - crossed the finish line, a large gold 1st coming to hang over Yoshi’s head.
He sat back in his seat, looking altogether too smug for someone who had just cheated his way into a victory. His remote dangling from the wrist-strap that Jeno insisted they all used for the WII remotes (there was an incident, Aria knows, with one of the remotes and a now-broken vase), Donghyuck’s little half smirk had never been more infuriating to Aria.
She had been leading the race for the better part of two laps, racing around Shy Guy Beach with a banana trailing behind Toad’s little cart in reserve. The finish line had been within her sights, and she was already beginning to settle back into the cushions, prepared to royally gloat her way through the rest of the evening before the unimaginable happened.
Renjun, steadily clinging onto 4th place but encroaching on Jeno’s 3rd, gave a cry of excitement. There was a whooshing sound -
And then Toad exploded in a cloud of blue.
Spinning out of control, Aria fumbled with the buttons uselessly, knowing there was nothing she could do to salvage her position but trying fruitlessly anyway.
She sat back, stunned and betrayed, as Donghyuck brushed past her and crossed the finish line smoothly - avoiding the loose banana peel that Toad had lost during his spin-out. The dust of the beach was kicked up by Yoshi’s booster kart wheels, and Aria found herself cursing the animators as Toad literally coughed in the cloud.
Was there much more in the world that could humiliate her so?
Perhaps that thought in itself, had been the tipping point of Aria’s spectacular downfall.
With her mouth dropped open, she watched as Renjun and Jeno passed - neck and neck - Jisung bringing up the tail end before Toad finally got himself under control again and pushed himself off into motion again. His kart was slow - slower than she wanted it to be, but they were moving and picking up speed.
He barely made it two feet.
A green shell crashed into the back of Aria’s cart, Toad flipping forward and stopping again, waving his hands around in protest. Mark flashed a cheeky grin at Aria from where he was perched on the edge of the coffee table in the centre of the room, zooming past Toad with Daisy snatching 5th place from beneath Aria’s nose.
She let out an aggrieved shout, dropping her controller in her dismay. “Mark!”
He couldn’t even have afforded her the dignity of being taken out by a red shell? No! He had to use the green ones, the ones you can actually escape if you have the speed and space to do so.
“Sorry,” He apologized, looking distinctly un-sorry.
Mark moved down the “Fire Save” list to just above Chenle.
With her controller on the floor, slid somewhere in between the throw pillows that had been kicked off by Chenle an hour earlier, Aria was forced to sit back and watch as Chenle chased Peach over the finish line, Bowser letting out a commiserating roar as he secured 7th place after Jaemin who took 6th with Princess Peach at the helm.
The race ended, 7 out of 8 players having crossed the finish line and one remaining stationary - 2.3 seconds away from the finish line.
With the sweet dulcet sounds of too-peppy Mario Kart music that was really beginning to give Aria a headache playing through the speakers; pandemonium broke out.
“You cheat!”
“It wasn’t me! That was hyung!” An incriminating finger was pointed at Renjun, who in turn threw a betrayed hand to his chest. “Sung! I thought we had a pact!”
“A pact?!” Aria’s voice grew in both volume and pitch. “So it’s true!” She spun to face the others, all who had been tossing the blame back and forth, while rolling about in fits of laughter. “You’ve all been plotting against me!”
“Never!”
“NO!”
“How could you accuse us of such a heinous crime?”
Their protests were heavily undermined by the fact that they were all holding their sides in pain from laughing too hard, and each of them wore a face-splitting grin. Aria narrowed her eyes at them all, glaring.
“Come on, noona!” Chenle goaded, straightening up momentarily only to flop back down onto Aria, bringing her into the impromptu cuddle pile that the others were forming on the floor.
She landed with an oof, and was going to apologize before realizing that it was, in fact, landed on Donghyuck. She only felt slightly bad for the elbow that landed in his stomach, then.
“You promised us dinner.” Donghyuck wheezed out, clutching at his ribs.
Scrap that. Aria didn’t feel bad at all.
“Wh-”
“’Loser buys dinner.’ I believe those were your words, Riri.” Jaemin grinned at her from his horizontal position stretched out over both Mark and Jeno.
Aria sighed a long suffering sigh, pinching the bridge off her nose. Muttering underneath her breath, she began attempting to extract her arm from Chenle’s vicious grip, before she was stopped by Renjun’s hand on her wrist.
“Or,” He began, and honestly Aria should have known better than to trust the mischievous twinkle in his eye but goddamnit she only had so much in her bank account at the moment. “We could go best out of three, and loser gets dinner tonight and tomorrow.”
Her credit score begged her to take the deal. She could feel her credit card crying out for her to accept, and to form an alliance with one of the conniving devils that she calls groupmates.
Aria wondered, again, how long was the jail time for multiple homicides.
Not long at all, if she didn’t get caught, she supposed.

A/N: someone requested this in a comment and I can’t remember who it was but here it is!!
Warnings: anxiety, mentions of abuse,
Steve Rogers daughter with fire powers headcanon
-
You had been made as an experiment.
Made in HYDRA. They’d given you fire powers to battle with
You had spent most of your childhood there
You had never known your father as a young childhood
Although you’d always had Bucky as a father figure
Whether he was under control or not, he never harmed you
Once Steve had found you one day in a base (after TWS) he had two different feelings
Part of him was happy he had a daughter
The other side of his brain was telling him to push you away so he didn’t mess up as a dad but he knew that wouldn’t help
And anyway, Bucky would personally beat him up if he even considered giving you up
Before long he found out you had powers
He didn’t find out straight away as you didn’t like using the fire
It was quite funny really, you were afraid of yourself and what you could do
But before long Loki, himself had helped you gain control and be comfortable with it
After that it turned into a game
The team knew you could do damage with it; you could light up the whole of New York if you wanted to
So it was safe to say they were on edge when you got angry
One time Sam had stolen your camera and erased all of its footage and your eyes started to glow red
Everyone was stood back in the furthest corner of the room, afraid you would set them aflame
All except Bucky
He knew you wouldn’t hurt anyone, he’d known you since a baby and everything you did was to try to help people. No matter whether they’ve caused you pain or not
So he knelt in front of you, his hand reached out close to yours as if asking for permission to touch you
And to everyone’s surprise, instead of killing someone, you burst into tears, reaching forward and bringing the soldier into a hug.
Sam felt bad after that for making you upset
Something else that scared the team was when you casually clicked your fingers, alighting a fire and then putting it out again, just casually.
They had a reason to be scared though.
Many times (on accident of course) you had lit people on fire by them just making you jump
It was a natural reaction.
You’d never been to school before so to say it was a relief when your dad said you could be homeschooled online was an understatement
It wasn’t that you didn’t know anything
No.
Tony and Bruce were there to teach you when you grew up in the tower
It was that other children were at schools and you thought they wouldn’t take kindly to someone who could turn them into a human torch with one click of a finger
The more you grew older the closer you grew to your father
He was there for you when you started to become distant from the hate you were receiving online
He was there when you struggled with training and started to give up on yourself
He was there when you had to stay in the towers hospital for two months after you’d accidentally burned yourself through your skin, nearly reaching the bone
He wasn’t, however there when Peter accidentally pushed you off the roof
You were very thankful that day that Tony’s suites were always on standby
Bucky and your dad were furious
Wanda had to literally put a protective bubble around the teenager to stop them both from launching at him
You were sure that they wouldn’t even think about actually doing it if they weren’t drunk on anger
The back of their minds was nagging them to think about what would’ve happened if the suite didn’t catch you.
If you weren’t here with them right now.
Neither of them wanted to even entertain the idea in their heads
Without failure, Fridays were the best days to be at the tower
Thor and Loki came back from Asgard to play board games with you
Peter spent the night there so everyone could play Wii after
And Sam brought over some of his homemade pancakes for everyone
You all ate them after the takeout though
Everybody always ended up in an abundance of blankets on the sofa though without even realising
Your dad loved to have Thursday dinners with just the two of you
Sometimes letting you alight the stove with your fire powers
You both tried to be as honest as you could with each other
Although sharing emotions wasn’t exactly your strong point
Especially when it came to being scared
One night the power had gone off, meaning most of the tower was technically useless
It also didn’t help when 30 minutes later it started thundering
Apparently, Thor couldn’t do anything about it
So there you were, alone in your bedroom shaking like a baby, as the thunder sounded from outside
You probably wouldn’t have been found if your dad hadn’t have come in to ask you to use your powers to cook the chicken on the stove as the power was out
But when he did, he instantly rushed over
Dropping the packet and kneeling in front of you
Tears stained your cheeks as he gently wiped them away with the pad of his thumb
He, or any other member of the team, didn’t know about your fear of thunder and lightning, so it was a surprise to him but he tried to mask it by being calm for you
“it’s okay, you’re safe doll”
Once you’d calmed down, he returned the food downstairs and instead grabbed some movies to drown out the noise from outside and some ice cream
You both watched Harry Potter films for the next couple hours, eating until the storm would blow over
Halfway through, Clint had come looking for the two of you
He didn’t expect to see you both wrapped up in blankets and snoring softly with Sirius Blacks voice sounding in the background
Nobody was better than you at monopoly
If there was a game (which was unlikely as they all knew what the outcome would be) then you would easily win
It also caused a lot of drama in the compound
“HOW DARE YOU!”
“WE ARE FAMILY. YOU CAN’T JUST PUT ME IN JAIL”
“ACTUALLY, I THINK I JUST DID.”
One time Thor actually threatened to bring thunder down on the tower if he didn’t get his house
That certainly shut you up
“Why are you guys so damn loud?” You asked with a groan
“Language (Y/N)” Bucky scolded making Steve narrow his eyes at him
“One time man”
When you first went on a mission, you were forced to go with your uncle Bucky and dad
They didn’t let you out of their sight the whole time
Which you supposed was fair enough since you were known to be accident prone
“(Y/N) stay behind Buck” your dad ordered in his captain voice as you all readied to bust into an experiment room
They were one of the most protective pair in the universe
But they were proud of how you grew up and handled being enhanced
Everyone was.

It's funny how I'm actually putting effort on this. I'm putting actual effort on a shitpost.
Anyways I said I'd write a bad sonic creepypasta so here it is. Here's the catch: I like how its turning out so imma make it a 2-pary story. This is the first part. It doesn't have any scary shit but it has the basics for a shitty creepypasta: someone gets a old pirated/unreleased/defective game and tries them out despite getting warned that bad shit might happen.
Again I'm not a fluent English speaker so expect some grammar error and stuff like that ._.,
So ladies, gentlemen and non-bis, I present to you-
Sonic: Battle of Metal and Blood (Part 1)
Synopsis: Teen gets nostalgic mid-quarentine and starts playing old Sonic games. She asks for some cheat codes and shit happens.
So for context; I'm a 17 year old girl stuck home because of quarantine.
It had been 4 or 5 months since the virus sent everyone home. Students were playing Animal Crossing and DOOM all day to fill in the summer hours since no one could go outside. I never liked going to the beach so I was never really bothered by it.
Like many people, I found myself going back in time to easier phases of my life. I was rewatching old cartoon shows from my childhood, getting into MCR and P!ATD and just living in pure nostalgia. I also started getting into gaming again, even going to the point of setting up my Wii again just to play Epic Mickey, but I didn't exactly grow up with the Wii. I was more of a Playstation kid, so much that me and my bro got a Playstation 2 from our cousin when he eventually bought the 3rd one for himself.
My cousin was older than us; I remember him being 16 or 17 when I was like 12, so he was kind of our gaming hero. If there was a level in Crash Bandicoot we couldn't beat, we'd call my cousin and he'd do it in 15 minutes. He knew all the cheat codes, all the secret levels and extra content for the games he had; he was like a genius to me and my lil bro, so when he gave us his old Playstation 2 and games me and my sibling knew we were in for a treat.
We got this Sonic Gems Collection for the Playstation 2 from him. It's like a port of various older Sonic games like Sonic CD, Sonic The Fighters, Sonic R and so on. I grew up playing that game, especially Sonic The Fighters since I wasn't very good at the racing games.
I still had a working controller and a lot of free time so I asked my bro for help setting up the console. The thing was so dusty I was actually scared it wasn't going to work. We clicked the power button and the light on the console turned on. Me and my brother held our breaths as we put the DVD in the console and crossed our fingers. As the screen lit up with the SEGA logo and music started playing, I just hugged him and cheered. He set up the console in my room so I could play without having to go to his room (he was the one keeping all the electronic stuff) and told me to have fun.
I didn't even know where to start. There was so much I wanted to play now that I actually knew what I was doing. I thought about starting with my favourite one out of the bunch: Sonic CD. I'm a sucker for the retro 2D pixel games so that was a must. It was better than what I remembered; the music was so catchy and the art style was vibrant and it stood out from a lot of games nowadays that go for a washed out "hyper realistic" look.
As I kept playing, I eventually reached the level where Amy tags along with Sonic for a while before Metal Sonic bursts through a wall and kidnaps her. Oh yeah, Metal Sonic was a thing. I remembered him from Sonic R and Sonic The Fighters - and the fact he was in the fucking cover art of the DVD case. I absolutely loved the fucker in the games though. He had a cool design, and the idea of the villain being a copy of the hero gone wrong was so interesting to me at the time.
I ended up passing the level and even making it to Stardust Speedway. I was sweating since I'd never come this far at any game. My bro was there cheering me as I tried not falling on spikes or getting hit by Metal Sonic's attacks. I ended up making it till the end on top, but it was kinda sad seeing Metal crash face-first against the door like that.
I was done with that for a while, so I went ahead and played Sonic R and Sonic The Fighters for nostalgia. Again, the fucker was there, either as a boss or as an unlockable character. I ended up noticing how there were a bunch of games missing. There were empty grayed slots with question marks instead of the game titles. I couldn't understand if the game was broken or if there was something I was supposed to do, so I called my cousin in hope he would somewhat tell me what to do. He ended up explaining how the game made you complete all the other games to unlock new ones. I thought that was kinda stupid so I asked him if he had any cheat codes or something to make the whole thing available. He told me he was going to dig up his old stuff and ring me again if he found anything.
A few hours later, he sent me a message telling me he'd found something that should work. He told me he did have a cheat code but he thought it was best if I didn't do it. Here's the transcript from his message.
"There's something that might work but it's kinda weird. I got this memory card from a friend of mine and he said this should unlock all the hidden contents within the disc, but when I tried it some weird shit started happening. Most of the sonic games were unplayable no matter how many times I restarted the console or cleaned the disc. There should be an extra game slot but that's just a glitch. Something about the system trying to make up storage for the extra code. Just don't click on anything that looks like a glitch and you should be golden"
Well that was a bit discouraging, but we agreed to meet that afternoon so he could give me the memory card.
When I got home and plugged the cartridge into the slot on the console, I was kinda scared. What if the thing exploded or something? I gave it a try and the thing actually worked! As I clicked on the games section, everything was there! There were some vectorman games but I didn't know who that was at the time so I didn't really care about them. What I was more interested in was the museum. There were a bunch of unlockable promotional art and illustrations there that I never got to see as a kid, so you could imagine how joyful I was when I saw the museum section filled with pages upon pages of illustrations and renderings of the games. Some of them weren't even on the Gems Collection like some screenshots of Sonic Heroes.
I went back on the game menu and was surprised to see another game entry below all the vectorman ones. It was called "Sonic: Battle of Metal and Blood". What the hell was this? It surely wasn't in the cover art and a quick google search turned up nothing. Was it a glitch? It couldn't be; it looked too clean and intentionally made to be a glitch, not to mention that whole game titles don't just appear out of thin air. Game or not, something was programmed in there. I concluded it was probably someone's fan project that was in the memory card my cousin gave me. Why hadn't he mentioned it though?
I was too curious to turn down a mystery like this one, so I got up first to make a cup of coffee since it was already getting late. As I returned from the kitchen, I remembered to look at the synopsis of the game. I can't remember exactly what it said but it was something along the lines of:
"In this sequel to the famous Sonic CD, step in the shoes of Sonic's friends as they face their biggest challenge yet. Control Amy Rose and Miles "Tails" Prower and fight against the metallic faker himself, Metal Sonic, and stop him before he puts his plan to become the only Sonic in action"
Woah, that sounded exciting; I wasted no time. I got all cozy, kept my cup of coffee next to me
And pressed START.
To be continued in part 2

Way back when, I posted an image of an OC, who fairly recently got a full name (she only had a surname back then.) So, with Eliza’s name finally figured out, I realised I hadn’t actually given my overview of the game that spawned her; Champions of Vestroia.
Time to lose my mind, I guess.
Some fore-knowledge before we get into this.
I am, by all means, a legacy bakugan fan, not a reboot fan. I’ve only seen one double episode (the become-smaller-child episode, which was cute, and Outer Demons, which has a super good premise, but the execution is. something.) By all accounts, CoV is essentially my introduction to the world of the reboot, and I’ll come to this later.
I played both the first game (Bakugan Battle Brawlers, specifically the Wii edition), and the... third game (Defenders of the Core, shortened to DOTC, also for the Wii. The second game, for anyone curious, is Battle Trainer, a DS exclusive.) This will come up later, of course, but I want to point out these two as they’re basically my control group for the quality here (not for the battles though; different battle system and all.)
I am incredibly stay-at-home. A lot of people I know irl I don’t have contact with, and most of them don’t live in my city. This is only important when it comes to the protagonist and literally no one else in the game, but I thought I’d mention it anyway.
So the game begins with the character creator. This is pretty standard stuff, honestly. My one issue with it is just-- this is probably my fashion sense speaking, but the fashion in the game is very... for lack of a better term, naff. There aren’t many options that look good, personally speaking. This is ignoring the issues where the protagonist loses their name, mid conversation, or is referred to as if I chose the male option instead of the female option. These issues are likely just oversights, by all accounts, but talk about jarring.
The first time you see your character is where 3. comes in. The protagonist, no matter what you chose (I have two save files, in case there was a difference. There isn’t), will always be a football/soccer player. Are you one of many, many people who isn’t sporty, who is trying to play as themselves? Sorry, your character is sporty, and you can’t do anything about it.
In the legacy games, this was never really a problem; your character was never seen doing anything other than brawling and interacting with other characters. Whether they played sports, or stayed indoors and wrote fanfic, the game let you decide on that for your character, by not having them do either of those things: your character only battled, or snuck around in DOTC’s case.
Once you stop playing football, you get to run to your best friends, and I guarantee you, you won’t immediately guess who they are unless you somehow already knew.
I mentioned BBB and DOTC being my control group on quality. Bringing the character creator back into this, the NPCs are laughable in quality. Any character who has the same model as you (older child. There are only two other model types: adult, and younger child) will look like a remixed version of your character. Had it not been for some characters having special eye shapes, you could practically cosplay any character in the game, because they were made the same way you made your character.
This includes your two best friends.
You could easily make the same character (minus clothes) as one of your best friend characters, without knowing it until you saw them.
While, yes, BBB and DOTC had the characters from the legacy anime in them, the fact that your best friends are nigh indistinguishable from any other character in the area, because you could easily make any of them in the character creator, isn’t... great.
Speaking of that. Characterisation is questionable, to say the least. Whatever bakugan you have in your first slot will answer to you the same as any other bakugan you have in your first slot. If you started off with Howlkor in the front of your party, and you replaced him with, say, Barbetra, Barbetra will act the exact same as Howlkor did, and it’s really something.
There’s only (?) Armoured Alliance bakugan in the game, other than Dragonoid, Pegatrix, Trox, Hydorous, Nillious, and the afforementioned Howlkor. That’s a small roster, by all accounts, so having varied dialogue depending on the bakugan would make sense.
The characterisation of the other characters is also a little funky in places. Your best friends don’t brawl, and I honestly forgot about them for a portion of the game. The tournament brawlers are practically as faceless as the villain minions, and the villains- oh the villains...
Preston. I don’t like Preston, at all. He’s a villain from the moment you see him, and the whole “try to find Preston” section in Helena Heights makes me want to punch someone. When you fight him in the Parasol HQ, his dad being the CEO, it’s fairly clear that Preston is little more than a tool for him. Sometime later, you fight Preston again, this time as the final tournament’s final battle, and he’s laughably weak compared to the other challengers. Remember, this kid fights you with Leonidas.
You’d think Leo would be good, but I’ll get into the butchering that happened to my death dragon later.
Anyhow, he fights you, assuming his dad will enjoy him defeating you. With the power of you’re the player character, you beat him, he hands all of his bakugan to you, and gives up on brawling for good. Kinda.
The next time you see him... hoo boy. In Old Town, on the way to defeat dear detestable dad, you come across Preston. He offers you help, and when player character is understandably suspicious, Preston complains that... one of his toys was taken away because you beat him, and now he wants Revenge On Dad.
I wish I was joking. His revenge, by helping you defeat his dad, isn’t because he’s obviously neglected by his dad (company taking priority over him, the CEO’s son), and then is used as a minion to try and get rid of you. It’s not out of bitter feelings because his dad doesn’t care about him, no, it’s because his dad took his ball away.
What’s worse is how player character reacts: “Oh! :) You’ve learned that bakugan aren’t just tools! :) Yes you can help me, despite the fact that you learning this sounds less than genuine and definitely not last minute! :)”
This is a level of stupidity I’ve only seen in DOTC Mira when Spectra tricks her into giving him Drago. He’s literally sulking and moping about over his ball, and then he sees the player character, immediately being manipulative so that player character can take down his dad for him.
Leonidas also forgives him, and has the same reaction as the player character.
Speaking of Leonidas! I think everyone’s been excited for Leonidas in general - we all love a shark headed death dragon, and we wanted one in the reboot for ages.
I refuse to call reboot Leonidas Leonidas. This is like the Shun Kazami debacle, but one I’m substantially more angry about.
Leonidas, in BBB, was untrusting of everything, wanted to throw down with everything in sight, had no fear of anything because “I don’t fear weak [humans]”, and literally came from hell. He eventually grew to trust you and others, to calm down and enjoy himself at his own pace, and was willing to have help from others, showing anyone around him that his origins aren’t the be all and end all about him.
Leonidas, in CoV, is immediately trusting of the first human who showed a hint of kindness, has a weakness to all attacks in the game, comes from Vestroia (not the Doom Dimension), and forgives the human who threw him away when he didn’t win the battle against you for him.
Ignoring the fact that Leonidas just doesn’t look good in CoV, I’d say he got bastardised. That’s not Leonidas, it’s just a dragon with the same name.
The main villain is the CEO of Parasol, an energy company that, assumedly, used to use solar power. Upon finding out that bakugan battles give off incredible levels of power, they turned to using bakugan, forced to battle, to generate power. These guys literally dug into someone’s house to try and get Leonidas. They’re evil.
On the topic of the battling for power generation; this has a decay effect on Vestroia, as it happens, as battling energy would usually go back into Vestroia, which would be recycled and reused.
The CEO doesn’t bend the knee to you until you break him, which is undoubtedly nice for a villain; I was honestly expecting him to give up, but he doesn’t. You beat him into a corner.
But as my introduction to the world of BP, through CoV, is lackluster at best. Obviously the game is meant for those who have seen the reboot, and don’t mind being completely disconnected from the story, because CoV is self contained, and Dan only shows up to be the tutorial giver (as a jpg, no less).
From what the game tells me about the setting; bakugan are often exploited by adults, bakugan do not like adults because of this, but can’t tell when a human child is manipulating them, unless another child removes them from that situation (the lack of agency here is somehow worse than in the legacy series, who knew).
Despite bakugan being around for 18 years in the setting, no one seems to be aware that they’re living beings, other than the main charcter, as if BP humans are equivalent to Legacy’s Vestals. I was already aware of Vestroia and Earth sharing a location in space, but the fact that drilling deep enough causes bakugan to appear on Earth seems... really weird? Schrödinger’s Bakugan Summoning Pit, but they exist on every digging site possible. Bonus points to all bakugan being able to speak, and they do speak a lot, but only to the player and whoever is around the player in a cutscene.
I’m missing a lot of things, such as battle items being the worst sometimes, I’m aware, but at this point I’m tired of rambling, so let me end off in a comparison.
CoV has, in my opinion, the same replayability levels as Pokemon Shield; I couldn’t replay either game to the end, and I wouldn’t recommend either to anyone unless they were desperate for a new game to play, and had nothing else to chose.

I love the modern AU headcanons! I'd love to read the series :)
I’ve been holding onto this message just so I could answer it with installment #4 of Sasuke in a Modern AU (see part 1 / Part 2 / Part 3 )
Obligatory notes: A few of these are more general personality quirks that would be included in OTS (read about that here) but are also true for Modern AU’s. Also this set does contain some hints at JuuSasu so brace yourselves. Have a great day
Sasuke doesn’t hold liquor as well as Itachi does.  Don’t get me wrong he can drink, he just gets buzzed a lot easier than Itachi does.  that being said he’s avoided drinking a lot since That Wild Party in high school where he got really drunk (thanks to Itachi) because he felt super sick afterwards and decided it just wasn’t worth it.
He can’t grow facial hair at all.  He’s tried just to prove he could because Itachi can but it just doesn’t happen for him
He’s also really bad at any game that requires the use of a wii remote.  He usually does great at video games because he has excellent reflexes and hand-eye coordination but somehow the wii remote really messes with him.  Give him a classic video game controller--it doesn’t matter for what-- and he’ll probably kick your butt.
for this reason Shisui mainly stocks wii remotes
He has been described by Suigetsu as a “serious but weirdly goofy and sentimental personality”
He’s funny in a sort of understated way.  His humor is a little bit dry and ironic but he also laughs at the most basic comedy. (He’s easily amused but trying to be cool about it)
He doesn’t sunburn at all...but he doesn’t really tan either.  He’s just stuck in this tan-enough-to-not-be-as-white-as-his-white-friends-but-not-tan-enough-to-really-be-tan phase.
Juugo on the other hand has the gloriously bronzed body of a greek god
His natural BFF is Karin or Suigetso or both (depending on the AU)
BF type is Juugo
Why? because Juugo has the gloriously bronzed body of a greek god, he’s thoughtful, caring, funny, stubborn as hell, grounded, opinionated, will do what he puts his mind to, calm-but firm, and just really really great
Sasuke is very smart but also kind of...an idiot.  As mentioned before he’s totally gullible with Itachi even though he absolutely should know better by now.  Also he just...says the most obvious things like “if it’s gone, someone must’ve taken it”  like, yes.  yes of course.
Suigetsu definitely calls him out on this (even though he too is very much an idiot.  Just in a different way)
He is really smart though
He is not super domestic.  His homemaking skills include cooking lasagna and that’s about it.  It’s not that he’s not good at cooking --because he could figure out a recipe on his own and it would turn out ok--it’s more that he grew up with a mother and a brother who were very domestic so there was never a need for him to cook.
He can clean/do house chores though.  He does those pretty well
He’s not the most tidy.  He generally keeps his surroundings clean but he’s been known to leave wet towels in the bathroom or clothes on the floor after changing esp. if he’s thinking about something else.  He kind of gets distracted/super focused on something and forgets other stuff
That’s all I have for today, hope you enjoyed it! Feel free to message me anytime. peace

Exploring copy personalization via VR
Introduction
Hello, my name is Jen. Many of the current world are starting to take notice to the idea of Mario 64's personalization AI. Neither of these topics need introduction, You know what Super Mario 64 is and you know why you're here. I've been taking a recent interest into the study of how the game adapts over time to suit the player, and exactly how personal that personalization gets. I'm very familiar with the game, I know most of it's ins and outs, I've completed it multiple times on the original console.
And I can tell you yes, it is a fact.
Super Mario 64 is a personalized game. But it's not personalized in the way people think.
In most cases, I've found the personalization factor of the game is incredibly small, and it's more subtle than meets the eye. And it can only be achieved on original hardware (IE, the Nintendo 64, or an environment that perfectly simulates the Nintendo 64, on a composite monitor or TV), and, for our purposes it would ideally be with the original Japanese release (or as I call it, the J variant) rather than International (or as I call it, the ! variant). It doesn't make too much of a difference, but in the original release it's effects are more obvious, at least for English-speaking players or players with English as their first language.
For instance, an English-speaking player will have slightly negative or empty feelings throughout the game while playing the J Variant on original hardware, similar to those felt in Wet-Dry World in the international release. Likewise, non-English speaking players will feel the same negative aura playing an international copy. I haven't yet studied the relationship between the International and European copies or Japanese and European copies though, which could definitely be something to look into, these same emotional auras could very well carry over.
The reason it can only be achieved on original hardware is because personalization was outright removed from other releases of SM64. Starting with the Shindou release, all subsequent versions of Mario 64, such as the iQue and Wii Virtual Console release, as well as the Japanese, North American and European versions commonly circulated through emulation and rom websites, and consequently what most, if not all of SM64 Hacks, mods and ports are built off of, have personalization outright removed, or altered in such a way to be unnoticeable. I'm not sure if this would extend to SM64DS or not, but the games seems similar enough that cognative proccesses line up in a similar fashion. Something I have noticed in my research is that skeptics of the Personalization AI often come off the heels of having played Modern versions of SM64 rather than the original versions.
Although to what extent I can't be sure, it's entirely possible that playing these modified ports of SM64 could lead to differences in brain activity that affects the way personalization works, specifically to the extent that playing copies of SM64 without the original personalization factors intact leads to an 'immunity' of sorts to it. The learned responses from playing SM64 emulated rather than on it's original console are subtle, but they're enough to cause differences. Given the personalization AI in general stems from the subtle differences between players, it would only make sense these 'learned behaviors' would alter the game in such a way to give every player who plays on the original hardware after having played a modified port a shared experience, or at least with differences that are too subtle to be noticeable. This is what I'll call the "Surface SM64 Theory". So at least in my mind, copy personalization equates more to instilled emotions, feelings, and thought processes that are interpreted through subtle differences between inputs, than it does pure 'injection' (IE, new graphics, music, sound effects and textures being 'beta-ified'). Although injection is certainly a part of it, it's not grandiose, and the effects are rarely seen on video, if at all. Which brings me to why I'm here today.
I feel that, to experience copy personalization on a level that's intimate enough to not just be a ripple effect, and can be closely analyzed, the only solution is to give the personalization factor a more direct line into one's senses. And what's the best way to do that with tools that are already available to the common consumer? VR, along with some other tools.
By controlling the game as if I were Mario, rather than Mario being a proxy to player input, I can observe the game at a closer, more emotionally open level. With headphones I can experience the sounds at a closer level, and by being closer to the screen I can experience the game itself at a closer level. Makes sense, doesn't it?
Given the Surface SM64 Theory though, I should note that I have played other ports of SM64 though, and, like I said, know it's ins and outs quite well, I decided to break from the game for an extended period of time (about a month at the time of writing) before trying to conduct this experiment. Ideally we'd want someone who grew up with the original release and nothing else, or had never heard of the game at all, but, I'm not interested in using any human guinea pig except for myself. In this way I hope to approach the game with a fresh mindset, or at least a mindset fresh enough so that I could explore at least some of the personalization effects.
Before this break though, I got into contact with a few different mod authors (who, for the sake of privacy, won't disclose the names of, they didn't want much to do with this project to begin with. I think they thought I was crazy or something) who gave me the grace of helping me out. The VR setup in question uses a rom extracted straight from my copy Super Mario 64, which has been verified to be an original cart. This rom was extended, modified, then the new rom was flashed onto a player cart in a modified Nintendo 64, with the rom's mods adding support for a gyroscopic, first-person camera, environmentally accurate surround sound, and two VR controllers I can hold.
I hope that doing this hasn't tampered with too much of the personalization AI, I'm not sure what the authors did to the rom, and in retrospect I probably shouldn't have given them the benefit of the doubt just putting my safety into their hands when they obviously thought I was bananas and refused to let me share any information about them. But, I've gone about this the only way I knew how to, and I've poured too much time into this now to not do it. So, I guess this frontier will be one I explore blindly. So, over the course of however long it takes me to finish the game with 120 Stars and talk to Yoshi, I'll be logging my experiences.
The Experiment
8/7/2020 11:30AM - Stars Collected: 0
Getting used to the controls took quite a lot of time, although thankfully the gyroscopic camera seems to follow Mario as an object instead of his model's face, I can't imagine doing all those flips and turns with a gyroscopic camera.
Everything seems to be working ok so far though, nothing seems too out of the ordinary, of course I didn't really look outside very much before going in, but, we'll see where it goes from here.
8/7/2020 11:55AM - Stars Collected: 8 This may've been a bad idea. I feel fine. So far it's just been playing the game in close-up, with not a whole lot else going on. I'm still going to see it through to it's end, but I wouldn't be surprised if I don't report back on anything else for a while. It's just kind of going through the motions at this point. I have all of BoB's stars except for MwttS and the first secret slide star, I'm not going to even try to attempt the second one right now, I still need time to get used to this I think, and for some reason I've always struggled with that one in particular. I guess if there's one thing that feels off, it's that, ironically, everything ironically feels much more quiet, I don't know if it's me, but everything feels quieter. With quieter audio this game feels so much lonelier. Early 3D environments can seem so bland and barren without much context. I'm gonna go try to fight Bowser, hopefully this goes well.
8/7/2020 12:10 PM - Stars Collected: 8 I may have made a slight error in judgement. Bowser levels are not only harder than I though they'd be with the camera zoomed in so close, but fighting Bowser is nearly impossible. Even though the camera follows Mario as an object and not his model, that doesn't seem to translate to Bowser very well, because the camera spins. Oh boy, does it spin. It's making me motion sick trying to beat him. I usually don't even get motion sick, I've been playing video games all my life, and VR has never bothered me like this. Perhaps it's just the game though. In the meantime I think I won't bother with Bowser and I'll go do some other stars here in the Foyer, there's a lot to get done after all.
8/7/2020 12:46PM - Stars Collected: 15 I finally got the other slide star, after a bunch of tries. I've always struggled with that one in particular, but this time it was especially hard with the camera, you can't hardly see where you're going and making that blind jump is such a gamble. I was really happy to be done with it when I got there. And by really happy, I mean, seriously giddy. When I heard the twinkling and the star appeared I had this moment to myself where I just started giggling. It just felt so rewarding. Something about it just... got to me. I felt warm on the inside. I think I'm starting to like the game better this way, it's harder, but, it's rewarding. I almost wonder if doing it again would have the same effect. But, I don't have time for that, I have to go finish up WF and JRB
8/7/2020 1:12PM - Stars Collected: 17 Well, out of pure curiosity, I tried it. And it worked. Too well. I haven't been getting much done for the past 10 minutes. I've just been redoing the slide star. Why I'm stuck on it? I don't know. I have more progress to make, I know, but, something about it is just fun. But, really, that's what the game is about, isn't it? Having fun? Besides, I have all the time in the world to finish the game, surely a little indulgence can't hurt right? Maybe it just feels nice to have finally conquered that one star that frustrated me so much. Either way, I for sure am gonna go back and finish the foyer now. I'm wasting time.
8/7/2020 2:36PM - Stars Collected: 17 God damn it. Why am I so stuck on this one mission? It's a really unremarkable star in the long run of things, it's a footnote. It's just one star. It's just one star. Why is it so much fun? It's so stupid, I feel like an addict going back to it over and over again. But, there's such a rush that comes with it. It's like a rollercoaster, the thrill, the anticipation of it all. And it has such a nice payoff, collecting a star feels so nice in this game. Screw personalization, maybe I should just shoot for the record on this star, surely there's a glitchless record for it somewhere.
8/7/2020 3:01PM - Stars Collected: 17 Still no progress. Been having a good time though. I think I should take a break soon though, I caught myself drooling a little bit after getting the star again.
8/7/2020 3:25PM - Stars Collected: 17 Yeah I need to take a break soon. This is extremely captivating, but, I caught myself drooling on myself again, and, I think I'm freaking my housemates out by giggling so much. But, I can't help it! It's such a rush! This is the truest essence of a video game I've felt in so long, I'm starting to feel nostalgic. I've always liked the Slider music more than most, and there's so many questions clawing at my mind. Like, what are the pillars there for? Who put them there? Why are they tangible? I always did like them. I wonder if they were meant to be in other levels before getting removed.
8/7/2020 5:16PM - Stars Collected: 17 Ok, I guess the road ends here for now. Someone kicked me off. Probably better that way too. I was in the zone playing the star again but, apparently I must've gotten really into it, because, I didn't hear myself, but apparently I was laughing, a lot. Very loudly. Eventually I guess I pissed one of my roommates off, they came and took off the headset and told me to go take a shower and stop doing this. I don't really want to do that, I kinda just wanna keep researching, but... I'm not too upset about it though, I mean, after all I can always just come back to this later. I mean, if this one star has captivated me so much, what'll the rest of the game be like? I'll come back tomorrow.
8/8/2020 9:50AM - Stars Collected: 17 I had a dream last night. About the slide. I think I need another day to take a break from this, the more I think about it, the more it's starting to bother me. What was my deal there? Why did I start laughing. Why did I enjoy this so much? And why do I still have all these questions about it? It's just one star. I need to get to the rest of the game and stop thinking about this.
8/9/2020 5:30PM - Stars Collected: 17 I can't stop thinking about it. I need to do it again. Just one more time. Then I can do the rest of the game. But I need to put this to bed.
8/9/2020 5:45PM - Stars Collected: 17 It happened again. I did it once, and it turned into another time. And another, and another. I started laughing again. I can't help it. I don't even know it's happening. But it is. It is. And I love it. It makes me sad that it's annoying people, but I can't help it. It's just... so much fun. So much fun. So much. So much. So much.
8/9/2020 7:31PM I shouldn't even bother with the star count. I got down to 13 seconds and I lost it. I cant' believe it. It's amazing. I was so happy. 13 seconds oh my god, I don't even know what the record is but it's gotta be close!
8/9/2020 10:00PM It's too much fun. I stopped about 10 minutes ago but, I soiled myself playing the game. I was too into it, I must not have noticed. What's wrong with me? Why am i like this? i feel like i cant tell anyone about this, they wouldn't understand. they wouldn't get it. they would just tell me to stop. i cant stop. i can't its serious now. this is serious. i have to keep going i have to i have to. but i cant anymore i need to go to bed i need to stop i need to sotp i need
8/9/2020 10:20PM im starting to realize that... this is personalized. this must be what people mean as in, the game appeals to you itself. it's horrific, i hate it i hate thinking about it. i don't even know what the game's doing to make me think this. Why. how. why is it like this? And why do i keep coming back. I hate doing it. I can't stop doing it but I hate doing it. It's an addiction it's a virus it's eating away at me like a parasite. I need to go to bed.
8/10/2020 3:28AM i can't sleep
8/10/2020 4:00AM i couldn't help myself i had to go back to it. i had to play it. it's so fun. i know it's bad for me, but nobody gets it. not even you reading this gets it, you don't KNOW me. you dont' know how much this emans to me and what it's doing for me. It's my lfieblodd this is my purpsoe. thise is me.
8/11/2020 they took it from  e they took it from me
i tried t play it on an meulator just to get the ficx but it wasn't the same. it wasn[t the same. it wasn't the same. and I NEED it back. i need it back . it's been hours now withotu eme having it and it's hurting me. it's hruting me. i'm seeing it in my head, it's what i need to take hold of and use, but Ii cant have it they won[t let me they won't let me do it.
i think im starting to see things that arent there.
8/14/20 I want fun. someone, please, show me, somewhere. I need thid feeling to come back. i need fun.
i hope he’ll show me fun

A little bit of magic, a little bit of logic (and a whole lot of coincidence)
Summary: It’s not so bad growing up in Camp Jupiter. Sure, there’s little annoyances here and there: like, Octavian always glaring at him, him being stuck in the fifth cohort, his inability to learn Latin that well, his weird preferences for the Greek names over the Roman ones, and the most annoying of all, an itching, indescribable feeling that somebody is waiting for him. Somebody… which is ridiculous because he has nobody outside of Camp Jupiter.Or my self-indulgent AU where Connor grew up on Camp Jupiter while Travis is still on Camp Half Blood.

aaaaaaaaaaand chapter 5 is finally done.
Chapter 5: I have to say, I am a pretty great friend.
Written for Writer’s Month Day 22: Summer
Connor climbs onto the ship not so gracefully and rolls over the rail onto the deck, sliding the grappling hook onto his belt. He surveys his surroundings. By the ballistas, Percy and a blonde are beside an unconscious body. In the middle of the deck is Jason, unmoving, — oh gods. Is he dead?! No, wait. His chest is rising. Jason’s okay. Jason’s fine — and another girl, conscious and tending to Jason.
Nobody notices him yet despite his rather loud landing. If he hurries, he can bring this down without fighting a single —
“Go! Get us out of here!” Percy yells and the blonde nods, standing up with speed and turning around. She freezes though when she sees him.
Their eyes meet.
Her eyes widen. She mouths a name. ( His name). A blast of icy cold wind chills his core (someone) (someone is waiting for him), but he pushes that thought away.
Camp Jupiter first. Everything else second. Prove your worth and all of your problems will be solved.
Connor uses the only asset he has, his slightly above-average speed, and takes off for the helm. The blonde follows after him unfortunately.
He doesn’t want to fight.
(You can still back out)
But there’s no other choice. There’s no backing out.
He reaches the helm seconds before the girl will. At first glimpse, it’s obvious everything at the helm is handcrafted. The navigation system is… unorthodox. No traditional steering wheel. Just a variety of game controllers plus a dubstep keyboard and an aviation throttle all linked to several big screens.
The girl is nearly here. Make a decision, Connor. And make it fast.
He lunges for the aviation throttle, but before he could push forward the girl screams that name again.
Travis.
Travis…
That name… that name sounds so familiar, even as it tears a hole in his chest. Travis… Travis… Travis is… Travis is someone important… someone he treasures. But that’s ridiculous. He never met a person named Travis before at all (Liar. Think harder.)
No. Stop it. Camp Jupiter. You’re going to prove Octavian wrong, remember? Don’t you want to rub it in Octavian’s face? Don’t you want to rub it in all their faces about his success? Then stop listening to the voice and just do it, you loser.
Connor grits his teeth, grips the throttle, and pushes it forward. The ship angles downward slowly. Not exactly what he wants to do. How does he lower the ship? Ah, whatever. He doesn’t have to bring the ship down. As long as he keeps it in place until the eagles could get here.
The dubstep keyboard probably controls the ship’s cannons, oars, and mast. He stabs his dagger into the keyboard, flinching from the resulting sparks. The Wii remote he doesn’t have a clue as to what it does, but he jabs it with his dagger too. As for the monitors, he cuts the wires on the back and watches the screens turn black.
Looks like they made a stop at McDonald’s before coming here. The soda cup sitting on the dashboard is half full and from the transparent lid, he can tell it’s definitely not water. Great!
He’s about to reach for the cup when the girl pushes him aside with enough force to knock him to his back.
“Crap. Crap. Crap. You couldn’t have made this simpler could you, Leo?” the blonde curses as she spends a second to stare at the controls in confusion before she finally spotted the throttle. That second cost her. Connor sweeps his foot on the back of her knees, watching her lose balance and hit her head on the dashboard.
She glares at him and oh man, her glare?  It’s definitely enough to make him want to quiver in fear. But that’s something Octavian loves to poke fun at so he fires up whatever specks of courage he still has left and says, “You shouldn’t have attacked my home.”
“Your home?” Her eyebrows furrow. “Jason wasn’t lying. You’re really not Travis, are you?”
Connor clenches his eyes shut and wills the pain away with minimal success. Why does that name always do this? He doesn’t understand. His head… his whole body… it feels like he’s been shot and dunked in an ice bath. Fuck. He hates this. He hates everything right now.
“I’m not,” he starts to say, but the world spins dangerously. Don’t pass out again. Don’t pass out. Now’s not the time. “My name isn’t Travis. It’s Connor. I’m an only child.”
The girl hums. She probably doesn’t think he noticed her hand itching back up to the controls, but he sees it and he tackles her. Not that it did much. In seconds, he’s pinned on his back in a rear chokehold.
“Are you sure you’re an only child?” the girl grunts into his ears, tightening her hold. “We have someone who looks exactly like you back in my camp.”
“Sure you do,” Connor mutters and tries to roll around, failing spectacularly. But at least the girl is too occupied to reach the controls. If he can keep them this way for a while longer, then—
“Annabeth! We need to go!” Percy yells, running into view. “Terminus is firing up an attack and I don’t think this ship can withstand it.”
“Kinda busy, Percy,” the girl — Annabeth — yells back, “I’ll hold him down. You get us out of here. Pull the throttle all the way back.”
Connor sucks in a quick breath, pulls his grappling hook from his belt, stops himself from crying when Annabeth tightens her hold, and aims the hook at what he hopes is the dashboard. Annabeth attempts to snatch his weapon away. Or maybe she was trying to mess up his aim. Either way, the pressure on his throat lets up slightly and he elbows her hard in the side. She hisses in pain, pulling back more and Connor lets the back of his fist rocket back and hit her smack in the face.
As she curses and clenches her nose, Connor rolls back up to his feet and takes aim again, focusing on the dashboard and pressing the trigger. The hook shoots forward.
Amazingly enough, Percy notices the hook firing despite the barely noticeable gush of air released. He spins and swings Riptide down on the hook to knock it out of the way. But Connor kinda already knows Percy is that capable. He saw the guy fight.
The hook fell to the ground, right next to Percy’s shoes.
Did he feel any guilt when he retracts the hook, the hook snagging on the shoe, and watches the son of Poseidon fall flat on his face?
No. Not really. His favorite boba shop was blasted to pieces because of them. This is just penance.
Connor stands and dodges Annabeth’s lunge, tossing the gun on top of her head. He runs to the controls, leaping over Percy’s groaning body, and grabs the soda cup again. If he pours it over the controls, it should fry the mechanics, shouldn’t it? If it doesn’t… two versus one isn’t ideal but all he has to do is hold them here long enough for Terminus to attack then boom. Goodbye ship. Hello Justice.
“Connor.”
Now isn’t that a familiar voice? Connor bites his cheeks, but he doesn’t let go of the cup. Pour it.
“Connor, wait.”
“... why should I, Jason?” Connor says. Pour it. What are you doing?
Connor chances the second to glance up at Jason, standing with the help of a brunette and wearing an orange shirt. He’s not a friend. He let his Camp be attacked. He’s an enemy.
Even still...
“You’re hurt,” Connor states, watching blood trickle down Jason’s temple. “What happened? Did another brick get to you?”
Jason rolls his eyes as the brunette stares between them. “Yes, it was a brick just like two years ago. Funny, I know. Absolutely hilarious. We can laugh about this later but Connor, I need you to listen to me. Put down the cup.”
Connor raises it instead. “No.”
“Connor,” the brunette begins to say, voice calm. “Put down the cup. Let’s talk this out.”
For some reason, her voice just makes him all the more angrier.
“No.” He pops the lid.
“I know you’re angry,” Jason says, tone slightly hurried now, “I know you think if you stop us from leaving, they’ll accept you. But the truth is—”
“Angry is kind of an understatement, Jason,” Connor snaps.
Jason continues like he never talked. “Octavian and his lackeys were never going to accept you. You fought in the titan war. You defended it the same as any of us. That should have been enough. Doing this won’t change their opinion.”
(He’s right, you know.)
His vision swarms, hard blinking no longer working on curbing the nausea away. A hand grasps his shoulder and he knocks it aside. Somehow Jason stumbles to his side. More than anything in the world, Connor hates the concern on Jason’s face. It makes him feel incompetent. Worthless. Weak.
“I don’t care about being accepted. You attacked us. You need to face justice.” His voice breaks towards the end.
“It’s to save the world,” Jason states. His hand grips his wrist holding the cup.
(Let’s leave.)
“The… world? Come on. You’re exaggerating,” he snorts, but he could feel his resolve crumbling.
Jason shakes his head. “No, I’m not. This is to save the world.”
(Let’s go east)
The pounding in his head isn’t making understanding any of this easier. He blinks hard again, rubbing the heel of his hand over his eyes.
(And then you can finally find him.)
“The titans are rising.” (Leave)
Ah.
“Me, Piper, Leo, all of us. We are going to stop it.” (Go east)
It’s happening again.
“So please.” (Someone is waiting for you)
That dream. That woman with two kids in her arms. He can’t see their faces. He could never see their faces. But they’re important. He needs to see them again. He needs to find them. (East.)
“Connor? Hey? You okay? Are you still there?”
When Jason places a hand on his shoulder again, he doesn't bother knocking it aside. He looks down at the controls, not believing what he’s going to say next.
“It’s… really to save the world?” (Someone is in this world. Might as well let it be saved as you go east and find your—)
Jason nods and Connor’s chest tightens like a hand is squeezing over it.
“I really, really hate you,” Connor says, pouring the drink onto the deck and stepping back.
The three fates appear behind Jason, wrinkly, old faces judging him and judging him hard.
Yeah, yeah. My promise. I didn’t forget.
“Wipe that smile off your face, Jason.” Connor scowls, bumping his friend’s shoulder as he turns around and walks to the rail. “You destroyed my favorite boba shop. When this is all over, I’m making you buy me as many boba drinks I want forever.”
The stupid grin doesn’t drop from Jason’s face. “5 boba drinks a month. I can’t afford to spend hundreds of dollars for your boba addiction. Hey, Connor, where are you going?”
Connor didn’t answer as he stops by the rail. He can see Frank as a dragon distracting Terminus down below. He can see Hazel putting out the fires on the sails. He can see he’s thousands of feet above the ground. Everybody is just a dot. The giant eagles are finally here and racing towards the ship, but they’re probably not going make it.
“Connor?” Jason asks quizzically.
He steps atop the rail.
“Connor!?”
I can’t believe you gave up so easily .
“Connor, get dow—”
And jumps down back to Camp Jupiter.
Out of the four seasons, Connor has to say summer is his favorite. It’s warm. It’s bright. It’s full of life. Going out of camp with his friends and visiting the sea lions at Pier 39 is his favorite activity to do ever.
(And the summer atmosphere reminds him of someone. He likes summer too.)
Someone catches him as he’s falling, her cheerful voice telling him who saved his life. But Connor opens his eyes just a tad to double check, resting his head on the uncomfy armor.
“Thanks, Gwen,” he mumbles.
“You’re welcome, you idiot. Octavian was going to let you fall to your death, but I wasn’t about to let that happen.”
“Thanks.” It might have been better if he’d just fallen to his death though.
He listens to the eagles’ flap their wings, but they’re not going to reach the ship. Octavian’s cussing confirms Jason and the others are gone. He still opens his eyes though to see the tail end of the ship disappear into the clouds. The glares he gets from Octavian and the others are enough to make him squirm closer into Gwen’s arms.
“Don’t let them get to you,” she says to him with undeserved support. “They couldn’t even get on board the ship.”
“Gwen,” he murmurs, “I let them go.”
But she just says it's okay, smiling with her saccharine grin. “I kinda figured you will. Jason can make you do anything he wants. Don’t worry though. I’ll protect you from Octavian.”
Connor pouts. “No, he can’t.”
(Yes, he can.)
“Yes, he can,” Gwen says, her smile dropping in concern. “Connor, you should sleep. You look like you need it.”
(She's not wrong.)
Why don’t you just shut up?
But that annoying voice of his is right. And he hates it when that stupid voice is right. It makes it so much harder to question its validity.
