i am sick to death of fourth wall breaks that are funny. i want fourth wall breaks that make me want to cry.

give me hamlet looking up during his monologue to see the audience and plead with them for help. give me orpheus, on the road back up from the underworld begging us to make sure eurydice is there, to tell him she is safe. give me orpheus turning when the audience stays silent.

give me someone, bloody and full of tears monologuing to the camera when the narrative has wound itself so tight that they can't escape it anymore.

i want the tragedy to be the performance. i want the tragedy to be, truly, in the eyes of the beholder.

Time to make my vol11 post so that I can read the other bookclubposts! This one will be MUCH shorter than my vol10 review. Chapters 1-3 below the cut!

Chapter 1:

EXCUSE ME I thought we had just established that we had FINALLY gotten over this old man and now we have to see his face one more time?? The audacity

Aaah I love Zazie as a character! Their concept is really cool, and it's pretty easy to kinda overlook it in your first read through, because I remember that it was Stampede where I understood that OH Zazie ist one of the worms! Of the native inhabitant species of the planets! Makes you remember that this is, after all, a Scifi Manga. (In a way).

Also hehe Elendira and her murderous side is so funny.

Snork mimimi snork mimimi God knows he needs the rest after all. I wonder if he dreams, and what he'd dream about in this night.

The fact that even Livio is shocked to hear that Vash was willingly making himself vulnerable in Livio's presence...really shows how much of a good guy he is I think! And the fact that Vash was trusting Livio enough to do that is something I really really like...regardless of how he might feel towards Livio now. I don't think he hates him. It's complicated and at first was a bit hostile-sounding, rightfully so, maybe, but Wolfwood gave his life to bring him back, and Vash trusts Wolfwood, so, logically he trusts Livio, too.

Ouch, not saying his name because that might still hurt too much... I'm a little confused why Vash blushes here? Is he embarassed because he's sounding so naive? Or maybe it's less blushing and more being close to tears? Could be that.

Chapter 2:

Even though Nightow is sometimes a bit, well...chaotic with his worldbuilding, I still feel like he's doing a great job. Because he's really good at getting the overall feeling across, the atmosphere, and making the world feel lively, so that we know there's stuff happening around our main characters. This might also mainly be because the stuff happening heavily influences our protagonists and the story. But it's also because it's well put into words and pictures!

Have I told you that ponytail Milly in a jacket and jeans is my favourite Milly flavour? I have now! She's so sweet and strong and huggable. Also these two are girlfriends.

And directly after that we get a trigun humour scene, where even those two scratch the 4th wall in disbelief :DD I love the duality of this manga, we have sooo many dark and tough scenes, but in between, at the right moments, we get a bit of fun to have a breather. But really, this happening just after both of them stare into the distance, reminiscing about old times, is peak humour.

Haha I didn't get this on my first, possibly two, read throughs at all: the mechanical parts of the ark are breaking apart, while it's transforming into this even bigger ship, an amalgamation of all the plants...there's this trace of a female body at the bottom, wow. Body horror! Looks pretty badass though.

Chapter 3:

Saving this for the only reason that it's all 3 of them together and it's therefor a precious panel

Ouch. (It's good that he's mentioned though and not just "oh well character is dead bye" We'll get to see this more, but really, until the very end, Wolfwood will not be forgotten and will stay a part of the story) And the look of Livio when he's mentioned! We know that boy must be overcome with guild and shame. Brad comes in to help him, though he says later in the chapter he didn't do it for him, but still, a tiny part of Brad, the one that believes in Vash, is willing to believe in Livio for him, and has already accepted Livio as a companion! I'm sure of that.

The most cruel thing through all of this is how we don't get to see any reaction from Vash. Because we really don't need to. Simply showing his grayed out back is SO telling already...again, some things are best left to imagination, like his expression. I imagine that's not always easy to follow as an artist, at least I LOVE to draw the hurt, the pain and all strong emotions in my characters, so I would really have to force myself to not do that.

Oh my god Milly :'( She's trying to go along with that story (a story that fools nobody), to not ruin the mood or well make a big topic out of it in this situation I guess, but she's just so open with her emotions, she just can't : (( Milly and Wolfwood also were such great characters with a nice dynamic (most of which we got to know at the Dragon's Den), how lovely it would have been to see more. Especially since they are both pretty different in ways, but also so similiar in ways! Both care deeply for family and both are protectors! Wolfwood could have probably learned a lot from Milly, like asking for help and such things.

If I had to choose a fetish it would be about Nightow's hand drawings. Maybe call it an art fetish. Cause damn he makes hands look so...substantial! Real! It's not even that they are super accurate anatomical wise (all joints are there and where they belong, but I think sometimes some lengths of the bones look a bit off?) but..I think it's the little details like scratches and such stuff that makes them not look so hospital-clean. Uhm know what I mean? I'm gonna stop talking now.

Livio, you're looking like a cockatoo!

Someone in the bookclub already pointed out this scene and I just want to add, there's now way Livio DIDN'T cry his eyes out after this

FINALLY someone closer to Vash says this to him. I really like Marlon for this (and that flashback drinking scene is great) because someone needs to drum this into Vash's head...good thing Marlon always speaks his mind!

I also love this right after, but I wanted to put the Dark Horse translation (right side) next to the Overhaul on the left! The Overhaul makes a bit more sense to me, at least sounds more sensible, but for some reason, the Dark Horse translation kinda stuck with me! This "Please, let me be! You'll get me all confused!" I really felt that, and I always thought this was a great way of showing the mess of emotions Vash must be feeling! The left one makes it a bit more clearer that Vash doesn't really know how to ask for help and NOT try to shoulder everything on his own. The Vash on the right...he feels a bit more like he's just so overwhelmed with everything that's been going on, Wolfwood's death, and now someone telling him he's allowed to get help, to ask for it...it's just too much at the moment and he doesn't know how to process that now. I like both, but I love the vulnerability the right translation gives off.

Before anything, I must say I know very little of whats currently happening with the lore (im a philza watcher lol) sooo yeah i’ll give my opinion with that context. I would say that my favourite character is q!phil but mainly bc I’m more close to just philza’s content in general and I mainly watch his POV, idk he’s such a silly anarchist 4th wall breaker. But q!Etoiles is also like one of the funniest people I’ve ever seen, idk why but there’s just something about him that breaks me. Also q!Missa is so sweet even tho he’s been missing for like 3 months but I love his wetcat cringefail husband energy.

(Also thats on me I have slight favouritism in pissa’s platonic marriage-)

And about the eggs, I think Richas and Tallulah have to be my favourites. Richas is just so based and he always makes me laugh and Tallulah is the cutest thing ever, and so traumatized, god the little drama queen has gone through so much-

I can’t really decide on one of each because they’re all just awesome tbh. Everyone has their quirks and stories and lore. And we also have to take on accounting that I haven’t been seeing other people’s pov’s apart for sometimes Fit’s?? (Btw maybe like an hour ago I was watching his stream and everything just crashed and he ended stream so L i guess). That’s a bit on me so I’ll try to catch up with other people too lol.

Trick question i relate to all the Eds for different reasons!! But for real I guess in the dynamic of the three together I am absolutely Ed.

E: If you wrote a sequel to [insert fic], what would it be about?

Hmmm I don’t know! I feel like my fics are all little separate contained packages. Maybe not so much sequels but snippets from the same general timeline. I don’t want to spoil how LMS ends but of course I have ideas about the events following its conclusion.

F: Share a snippet from one of your favorite dialogue scenes you've written and explain why you're proud of it.

Okay here is another because I’m bad at picking favorites… from Ch 4 of LMS.

Clapping her hands together, the enthused employee responded, “My goodness! Isn’t that funny! Three friends with the same name. Why, you could write a story book about something like that.”

“Eh, probably more like a TV show,” Eddy replied, running a hand through his hair to make sure it wasn’t out of place from Ed’s ruffling.

“What would it be about?” The woman inquired.

Eddy placed Sparky’s name tag over his right thumb, flicked it until it flipped a few times, and snatched it midair on the descent.

“Beats me. It’s kind of a weak premise. Sounds like it needs a plot.”

I enjoyed the irony of the characters in-universe not being aware they are characters from a kids cartoon. It’s just fun for me to play with that, and prod at the common criticism that the show didn’t have a plot lol. It had a plot but it was often simple. The imagery of Eddy flipping the tag was meant to allude to the main plot driver for most of the show: getting quarters for jaw breakers.

Lol I also appreciated you shouting out the Eddy line from this bit of dialogue from The Ed Must Go On. I also felt proud of myself for getting Eddy’s stubborn-as-an-ass voice right haha and I can’t resist writing Edd and Eddy bickering:

“You know. It’s your way or the highway.”

“Well I can’t help that you were pulling the fabric too taut. Your seam is going to be cockled.”

G: Do you write your story from start to finish, or do you write the scenes out of order?

I guess more the latter. I often get specific dialogue or scenes in my head and work a plot around that. Sometimes if there are multiple scenes I’ll cobble them together in an order that makes some logical sense. With a more complicated multi chapter fic I have general outlines of events, locations, timelines too that I’m working with.

I: Do you have a guilty pleasure in fic (reading or writing)?

Honestly my answer to F this time around reminded me I’m such a sucker for 4th wall breaks and references back to events from the show. I integrate them a lot, hopefully not entirely overdoing it (I’m definitely overdoing it). Um also big fan of physical comedy - how could I not be, eene is the best with slapstick!

K: What's the angstiest idea you've ever come up with?

Oh jeez… it’s a fair question but I’m so cringe. In my old fic Ready I heavily insinuate that Eddy was physically and sexually abused by his bro.

This is an AU where all the game characters (John, You, Maison) become self aware.

You is my OC because idk what You looks like in the game lol

I made this so I can organize my thoughts and plan things like fanfics, animatics and stuff hehe

This gets updated a lot bc I change my mind frequently lmao I don't really take this seriously it's just a funny thing I made for one of my fave games!

maybe in this Canon Divergence AU whatever shit, John is aware of their fan base and that's why they work so hard to get to You in the game. because You is like the bridge between his world and his fans world.

does Doe really love You? or is she in love with the physical real beings controlling You that makes him feel less alone (the players)

I feel like they'll have a platonic friendship outside of the game, because Doe is more interested in The Player themself. I also wanna see what John's personality is like aside from being in love

Relationships:

Doe must want to get out of his "reality": people think she is a common pest, and his house is so messed up bc he probably has no one looking after them :( Maybe they want a way to escape her reality and thats why they r so in love with the Players???

You is just a placeholder character for the Player, and they can be mind controlled. Aside from that, they have their own personality, their own life, and dreams. You will go by they/she ig or any pronouns tbh bc they r supposed to be a stand-in for anyone playing the game

You has this barbie aesthetic and blue theme to complement Doe's emo aesthetic and red theme because THAT'S SO FUCKING FUN TO DRAW EEEEEEEEEEEEEK

maybe in the YES ending, You is actually the one controlling your actions, gaining sentience for the first time, and fuckin around saying random shit to freak you out lol

The timeloops in this AU are controlled by the Player. they happen everytime you start a new game. because that's really what happens: You is put in the same situation every single day because we keep replaying the game!!

maybe the reason this game looks like it takes place in the 2000s (You's phone) is because it's forever stuck in a timeloop even though our world is advancing

Since Purple RPG exists in the John Doe universe, and we play as randall (I think idk I haven't played the game yet), does that mean there are multiple people The Player can control? As in... Multiple "You"s? Then who is the person we are playing as in John Doe and House Hunted? Dundundunnnn

While Doe and You plan to escape, Maison can't because his true body is bound to Uncanny Valley (he is literally a house) so he tries to get the Player to come to him instead

Doe can definitely tell the difference between You and The Player controlling You. You is way more impulsive, clever and joking, while The Player controlling You acts more robotic in their body language and has limited responses, usually "YES" or "NO"

John Doe will still be clingy, because she never really had a friend before, not counting the eyebirds he feeds

Their friendship dynamic might be "Idiot & Idiot in Progress", "I'm Gonna do Evil & Don't Forget your Knife" or maybe even "I Love Him, He's Different & BITCH NO YOU DON'T"

I definitely think you're right about how Eclipse showed up in the dream, how Sun's mind may be trying to get him to move forwards from old Eclipse, it's also interesting that with Eclipse, unlike the others afterwards, Eclipse just walks out, if this were to happen in reality, the endpoint of development could be Eclipse learning to pave his own way without the twins occupying his mind, and the twins(Sun especially, who was the most traumatized, and Moon's right, Sun doesn't have to forgive him, but they can all still move forward) doing the same...The others...Are a lot more absurd Sun is still visibly shaken and scared of Bloodmoon, as one might expect, though it was funny that Bloodmoon sorta broke the 4th wall acknowledging the real them would probably never apologize, could the whole "maybe one day you'll see us as family" thing is in reference to Sun saying "I would've loved to have another brother" to his hallucination a while back? The Catnap one was...Weird, could Sun either still feel salty about Catnap showing up trying to live there, or conversely feel bad about absolutely going off at them? Ruin's was probably wish-fulfillment, since so far there's been no dice for actually restoring the destroyed dimensions(maaaybe Solar could be brought back in some way but so far nothing on reversing that), also could it be that Moon was functioning as a sort of moderator for Sun's emotions, since he told both Bloodmoon and Ruin, two people who Sun currently has very heightened emotions about, to leave as a way to de-escalate? Sun having no tolerance for the Creator is on-brand, and of course the whole buying Fazbear thing seems crystal clear, I think the point where the dream started going off the rails is when the Creator said he wanted to be their dad again, which is something I don't think anybody wants Then everything nosedives with KC, Sun says that they "moved past" everything but who knows if that's fully true, it's interesting that Moon dips out here, it could be that Moon leaving was the indication that the whole dream/nightmare was about to spiral out of control, with Sun's mind pulling out everybody who he's had negative interactions with in the past, if Moon hadn't woke him up would he have seen other people? I am surprised Old Moon didn't show up or was even mentioned Got a bit carried away with the analysis there, who knows if any of this makes sense What do you think?

(me seeying a long ask _ happy sounds_) oh ye ye! I feel in Sun's very organic mind- he knows he must let go, and maybe deep down he wished Eclipse to change- I mean. solar is an eclipse! Sun knows how bad Eclipse had it- but if Moon did change.. why not Eclipse? simple.. this one? is mean to be the copy of that simple minded personality.. and we saw how much this does affect Eclipse he is- while Sun is dreaming-totally having a internal crisis over what - who he is- is he himself? does he keep playing the act? does he finally break free of the chain of trauma? Mystic Messenger (Deep Route)

So as I had mentioned in my previous post on Mystic Messenger, I was obsessed with this game in high school. More specifically thought I was in love with Yoosung, Seven, and Jumin. As you can imagine, this means I loved the Deep Routes, because that’s where two of the three of my favorites were. I recently finished and here’s what I thought.

Jumin’s Route

I loved Jumin and I was so excited to play his route again. Especially now that we are closer in age, I was just so excited to play this again.

I love that Jumin is a cat dad, I personally am a huge cat lover, so him loving cats makes me so happy! On top of that I am also a sucker for routes where the MC warms up the guy everyone else thinks is “cold” or “emotionless”. Jumin is also one of if not the most possessive character in this game, and what can I say, other than I love that.

I remembered a lot about Jumin’s route because it left such a strong impression on me as a teen. So I wasn’t really shocked by anything plot related. However, content wise I was shocked. Just because I don’t think I really remembered just what all was said in this route. I really think Jumin’s route must have changed my brain chemistry or something, because this had so many tropes that I love. The possessiveness, and references to locking MC up, and him calling her Princess and such, it was too much (in a good way).

It’s hard for me to be objective because I love Jumin, I think he’s actually so funny in just about every route, and he’s just so hard for me not to obsess over. With that said I obviously loved playing his route, it made me so happy. The only thing that sucks was the Glam Choi storyline was a little annoying, but it was interesting so I wouldn’t say that’s a bad thing.

Jumin’s voice actor is amazing. I loved how he portrayed him. I think having to play a very stoic character can be hard, and especially with Jumin’s arc, I think the voice actor did phenomenal. All around this route is amazing. I’m very tempted to get that bad ending, if you know what I mean. So I might do that in the future 😅.

707’s Route

I’m pretty sure everyone loves Seven, I could be wrong, but from what I’ve seen we are all obsessed with him. He’s just such a fun and interesting character, even from the prologue. He’s so quirky and different it makes it hard for you to not love him, plus he can sometimes break the 4th wall in other routes or give you hints about the other characters.

I remember loving his route, and that his is the “true route”. Which I think I mentioned in my Collar x Malice review I don’t tend to like true routes. However, seven is an exception to that. He’s just such a fun and unique character, and his story has so much depth to it.

I honestly forgot so many details from this route! I just remembered that I loved Seven, his route is pretty sad, and a bunch of the spoiler stuff. But the little details were definitely lost. So replaying was a little shocking because I honestly forgot a lot of the sad backstory stuff in this route. Plus the ending is very long and sad before you get the happy ending.

With all that said, I still really liked this route. His voice actor also did an amazing job, especially given the wide range of things he had to do, I was super impressed.

I think this is a great version of a good true ending, although since I last played there are now two new route out, so I don’t know if Seven’s is still the true ending. But I think it was really well done overall. It really is hard to not love Seven, and I think that’s why he’s probably the fandom’s favorite.

Overall Thoughts

There’s not too much for me to say because I’ve played these before, and I love them so much it’s hard for me to critique them. I think these are definitely more heavy than the previous three, and they definitely have parts that can be hard to play. But they are absolutely amazing. I think the Deep Routes will always hold a special place in my heart.

So where does this leave me? Well there are only two routes left and I’ve never played either. I honestly don’t know to much about the Another Stories, I’ve heard that it’s in a slightly different reality from the first five routes, which makes sense. I’m honestly very excited for Ray’s Route, because I was definitely a sucker for Unknown back in High School (I accidentally got his Christmas DLC ending when I didn’t even know it was a thing because I kept flirting with Unknown 😅) so I definitely think I’ll like his. V on the other hand I’m kind of dreading. I never really liked V all that much, it’s not that I hated him, he’s just not my type. But after replying as an adult it is starting to teeter onto I don’t like V at all. Some of the stuff he does is so bad, and also his relationship with Rika is so toxic. I’ve also heard that V and MC don’t even get a kiss, so really I have no hopes for V’s Route. But I’ll probably play them both just so I know I’ve done everything. Hopefully Another Story review will be out before December! So you’ll just have to wait until then if you want to know my thoughts on it.

Being a fan of more obscure characters often means that you have to scour through issues for any appearance, and sometimes their appearance winds up being wildly out of character because the writer didn’t bother to do any research for D-list mutant #27.

Which brings me to Spiderman/Deadpool #11, with an completely inexplicable and badly written appearance by the (dead?) Hellion Tarot.

Barely recognizable in her new bad-girl get-up, with her normally red hair apparently died black and pink.  (I actually kinda like her new outfit, aside from all the unnecessary cut-outs.)  Also, she is now distracting people with her tarot card manifestations in order to steal.  Just as a reminder, here is what Tarot was like in her Hellion days, getting rejected by Doug Ramsey:

Doug, you fool!  Tarot was one of the nicest Hellions.  She was one of the team members that, had circumstances not placed her with the White Queen, could have been a New Mutant and eventually an X-Man.  (In fairness, I actually think all the Hellions were potentially redeemable except Empath.)

But in this comic, she is written as ha ha funny French woman who uses her powers to rob people, and literally tries to kill Spiderman.

  Tarot also is supposed to be dead when this comic came out.  In fairness, Tarot’s status as alive or dead has been somewhat confusing.  She first died with her fellow Hellions in a completely gratuitous shock value mass slaughter Sentinel attack.  Much later, she showed up with King Bedlam’s New Hellions, having been somehow resurrected by him, in a way that’s never fully explained.  After King Bedlam lost his powers in M-Day, Tarot must have died again, because she shows up in Necrosha as one of the temporarily resurrected Hellions brought back by Selene.  They are all apparently destroyed again at the end of that story.  (The poor Hellions never get to catch a break.)

So, why is she alive again, drawn off-model and acting completely out of character?  Why, because of a writer that didn’t bother to do any research, and an editor apparently asleep at the wheel, that’s why! 

In fairness, the writer of this issue was apparently Penn Jilette (Penn and Teller guest star in the issue), and I wouldn’t expect him to be up-to-date on every obscure Marvel mutant (that was the editor’s job, which they failed).  In further fairness, Spiderman/Deadpool is a very silly, 4th-wall-breaking series, and this issue leans especially hard into the silliness.  And hey, Tarot might now be completely jaded and cynical with all her deaths and resurrections, and apparently splitting off from King Bedlam.  Maybe she’s gotten nastier as a result.

With all those caveats, though, fuck this bullshit:

My girl Tarot has been put through the ringer being dead then alive then dead again.  All the Hellions, after their gratuitous and unnecessary deaths, have only been pulled out of mothballs when the writers need angst for Emma Frost or James Proudstar or the New Mutants.  Even on Krakoa, where they are all finally resurrected for good this time, they are just cameos and accessories for other people’s stories.  (They really only pop up in Zeb Wells Hellions series, to show that Empath is a piece of shit.  Although Roulette and Catseye do get to beat him up at the Hellfire Gala, that’s a win there.) 

So I’m rather annoyed to see this French caricature that bears no resemblance at all to the Tarot I know pop up in a stupid Deadpool comic as a throwaway villain. 

Especially since there’s another Hellion that would have fit the story much better:

Who’s the blonde?  Why it’s Roulette, Tarot’s team-mate who was one of the nastier Hellions.  Not as nasty as Empath, but definitely a mean-girl type who didn’t shy away from dirty tricks.  I could definitely imagine Roulette using her powers to rob people.

Oh, and did I mention Roulette has luck-based powers?  And she was born in Atlantic City, famous for it’s casinos?

And this Deadpool story......takes place.....in Las Vegas.

This story would have worked so much better with Roulette as the throwaway villain who just wants to cheat people and steal (but then I guess they wouldn’t have been able to make as many French jokes, because those are all super funny, right?).  Roulette was also dead at the time, but that didn’t stop the writers from using Tarot, it shouldn’t stop them from using Jenny.  It would have been great, I wouldn’t have even needed an explanation for her resurrection.

Thank you, this has been my unnecessarily long salt post about a minor character being ooc in a single issue of a comic.  Because nothing makes me hate a comics writer more than them badly writing one of my favorites.

I love everything about it - the comedy, the 4th-wall breaks, the lawyer aspect (I love lawyer shows, can't wait for more) - it's just so enjoyable and just fun (tho the mcu has me very confused about the timeline which caused me to pause and Google a bit and I'm still confused lol - make it clearer guys, I like to know irrelevant stuff!! 😂)

Soul Keith:  YES! THAT'S AMAZING!

Keith: Now, that’s cool.

Edison: Nope. I knew this since your BIO is in this paper I’m holding.

Soul Keith:  HOW IS THAT NOT COOL?

Moisty: Huh. I’ll tell my bio anyways.

Edison: Alright then, besides, the Imitator is knocked down for 2 hours so yeah, go ahead.

Moisty: Moisty is a 14-year old humanoid teenager that wears a black beanie with a mask. She also wears a blank white t-shirt. Along with that, she wears a skirt with black shorts underneath. She wears black sneakers that look like arrows in the back. When she either takes off her mask or hat, her demon is revealed. She keeps it on for a reason. Only reason why is because she doesn’t want people to see her true form. Moisty also has an inkling skeleton on the outside so she can keep her identity hidden. If her identity is revealed in public, everyone will run away and try to kill her. Moisty is also one of those special inklings. Unlike the inklings and octolings she knows, Moisty is the only one who can swim in her town. Her favorite foods are pizza, cheeseburger, boneless chicken, french fries, pancakes, bacon, sausage, and an awesome surprise of mac n’ cheese.

Edison: That was really not an interesting bio.

Soul Keith:  Umm… Why? We know. I think.

Moisty: How was that not interesting? I told everything about myself… Almost.

Soul Keith:  ALMOST? You could have written an essay about that!

Edison: Really, it’s just, why? Why keep your identity secret? Lucy unleashes her demon form anywhere, you have to write an essay about yourself.

Tales of Innocence Playthrough Thoughts Pt. 1

New game, let's gooooo!

Under the cut like usual!

So first things first, I'll be using the names from the translation I'm playing instead of the commonly used versions (Luca instead of Ruca, Iria instead of Illia, etc.) just for my own convenience.

Anyway, I really love this game so far even though it just started! I played a little bit beforehand but I'll kick this off where I just picked up today.

I really really like Iria, she's so funny and strong willed. Can't exactly say I trust her though since there seems to be some implications that she might not be the person she says she is. Though even she might not be aware of it. We'll have to wait and see!

Luca... my pathetic little son. I care about him very much. I've already posted my thoughts before so mot much to add. It's still so funny that he was once a ten foot tall powerful demon or whatever and is now this wimpy little guy

Spada... I just met him but I'm already feeling bad for soft little Luca and his two rude, rough pals lol. Also he used to be a sword, which is strange... I wonder how it must feel having lived as a sword but now having mobility, opposable thumbs, and free will.

Speaking of which, why does this dude talk to his sword like it's his beloved wife? Lol

I agree with what Spada says after the flashback. It IS weird to talk to your sword (even when the sword somehow talks back.)

Also the whole rehabilitation program is pretty messed up. I'm interested in finding out more about the Fallen and the state of their world. Additionally I want to know what Mathias is really up to with her little cult type thing. Sounds too good to be true...

And Coda is.... well, he's Coda. I read somewhere that his verbal tic is meant to be "I say" (I'm assuming similar to Adecor from ToV) but here it is translated as "You know?" It makes no difference, I just thought it was interesting. I too say "you know?" too often and enjoy eating food, I think I can get along with him. Chitose gives me bad vibes... or is that just because I am falsely trusting Iria? Can either of them be trusted? Though it is funny seeing Iria stomp around and get all heated about her though. The party dynamic is very strange. It's this precious little dude who is so scared and has been bullied his whole life and his two companions are constantly picking on him too and threatening to maim him if he doesn't help them or tougher up. But... they are also apparently his trusted sword and (what I assume to be) his lover from his past life (both of which the three have memories of) and on top of that they are also like his friends now. A very interesting dynamic that I haven't seen much before. I hope they can all learn to get along. I really like choosing classes and running around the battle field to pick up gald and items as they drop. It's a very nostalgic feeling akin to other DS JRPGs. I won't complain about it at all! The 4th wall breaking to explain mechanics doesn't seem to be as prevalent in other Tales games, especially not to the extent it is in this one (such as Luca informing Iria that there is a friendship status bar and her telling him how weird it is and that it's an invasion of her privacy before Coda comes over to tell him how it works). I've certainly seen it in other games, it's just a bit unfamiliar seeing it in this one, especially with how frequent and drawn out the conversations are. When will Hasta appear...? I will wait patiently. Aaaaaand I think that's it for now! It seems like it's not a very popular game (which makes sense considering it was never localized) but it would be cool to chat with people who have played it or maybe this will inspire some other people to try it out too ^^

You feel uncomfortable about Scepter 4 year-end track, is it because you're Reisaru shipper and in that track Fushimi ditched Munakata to chase Misaki? You know that the track was made by Yellow, one of official GoRa's members, right? The track is, sadly for you, canon.

Fushimi ditched Munakata? Oho, I support it fully. Like hell, sometimes on Drama CDs or short stories (especially Gakuen K) Fushimi is so tolerant with Munakata's shenanigans and made me want to scream "just kick him and run away Fushimi!" (Case point : Munakata fishing trip, Munakata got handcuffed, Munakata's King Game, Fushimi became Santa Claus). And for me, the fact that Fushimi can refuse Munakata and willing to do so without any fear or hesitation is the cute and healthy point of Reisaru. He already coldly rejected Munakata many times you know, like when he refused to accompany Munakata on his hobby because it reminded him of the time when he was roped by Totsuka into various activities, he refused to play cheese with Munakata, he refused to see autumn falling leaves together with Munakata on their day off, etc. So yeah, the fact that Fushimi ditched Munakata to chase Misaki didn't bother me at all.

So what made me feel uncomfortable for this track? Just one word, Timeline. The explanation is a bit meta-y so if you don't want read my rambling, the short answer is there's discrepancy with the main canon timeline, and while it's not impossible, the implication made me uncomfortable. Again, not impossible but hella uncomfortable for me. For full explanation....

See, for me, since most of K Drama CDs are mostly gag tracks, the ones that I treat as canon are Drama CDs that I think can be slotted in canon timeline. Drama CDs like Crow's Repayment, Snow White, and Izumo's Room are definitely not canon because there's no way those were happened on main timeline situation. Drama CDs like Everything Sank Except Me and That Guy and Munakata Fish The World is obviously placed after ROK (since Munakata got weakened like he can't pull a tire and Sarumi's improved relationship). Other drama like Munakata-kun's Strap, Elevator, or For Justice can easily be slotted in pre-anime or even post season 1. Window Shopping, Figure Direction, and Private Hero are obviously pre-anime by the casual appearance or mention of Mikoto and Totsuka. There are Drama CD that used as blatant promotion of K Project, like Guys Meeting in The Shower and it's Girl Version counterpart which completely break the fourth-wall by "Hey we are bunch of K boys in K world let's we dip in hot water and talk" which is definitely not gonna happen in canon.

So what category is YEP (Year End Party) Drama CD? It's logical enough to happen on canon. It didn't break any fourth wall. If we assumed that YEP Drama CD is truly happened on canon, on what period it's happened? It's definitely on pre-ROK, and by the casual mention of Mikoto, can it happen on pre-Season 1?

The answer is no. Why? Because unlike other Drama CD who has no mention of time as our foothold, YEP Drama CD has two hints about the specific time it happened. First, it's about year-end party, so the drama CD was happened on the end of December. Second, by the mention of ABCDEFGH as a squad that was expected to come by Munakata, it means that Scepter 4 Special Ops Squad was already formed, since before it ABCD were leaders of 1st-4th platoons and EFGH were ordinary swordsmen of 4th platoon. Is it impossible for them to have casual gathering together? No. Is it impossible for them to get grouped together on formal gathering with their boss? Yes. Because based on Scepter 4 structure, they were not a group yet, they were not even on the same platoon. Like, if EFGH was invited, how about the rest of 1st-3rd platoons? How about the 5th platoon leader and members? (Poor 5th platoon, they didn't get any screen time except a brief mention on Season 1 episode 8). And before Special Squad was formed, Fushimi is just an ordinary rank on Intelligent Division, so why did he come to gathering for Scepter 4 bosses and leaders of Swordsmen platoons, with bunch of troublemakers from 4th platoon? (I mean, yeah he is Munakata's favorite and the King's private soldier, but that was not.... an official title). The Drama CD with the mentioned casts was not logical to happen if Fushimi and ABCDEFGH was not yet grouped under a special group, which is currently named Special Ops Squad.

Now when we established that YEP drama CD happened on late December, before ROK and after Special Ops squad was formed, let's look at the detailed timeline of K :

Special Ops squad was formed on Side Blue, detailed time was on 1st May 2012. Fushimi particularly joined Special Ops Squad and became the third-in-command on 6th June 2012. So the mentioned casts (Special Ops Squad) plus Awashima and Fushimi were expected to have Year End Party together with Munakata, it certainly happened on late December 2012. And what happened on December 2012? Apocalypse well quite almost close to that. On 7th December 2012 Totsuka was dead, and 12 days after, on 19th December 2012 Mikoto was dead, killed by (a very unwilling) Munakata. So if YEP drama CD happened on 23-31 December 2012, more or less a week after the end of Season 1 and Mikoto's death, then...

-Scepter 4 ditched Munakata even thought they were aware that more or less a week before their King killed his friend. If the rest of squad didn't know about Mikorei's relationship, then at least Awashima knew how hard mental blow that was received by Munakata on K Season 1. Yet she still ditched Munakata. I don't know what happened on previous YEP, but would the ever loyal Awashima ditched her King when she knew that Munakata was very possibly on his sad and hurtful period?

-Fushimi taunted Yata with mentioning Mikoto just more or less a week after Mikoto's death. Sure we knew that Fushimi could taunt Yata even after Mikoto's death, but (I hope) he didn't specifically search for Yata and taunt him with how Homra and Mikoto is suck just after Mikoto's death. On canon, after Mikoto's death Fushimi avoided the hell of Yata and Homra, on Missing King Yata called him first, and on ROK, their meeting was coincidental.

-I love Scepter 4 as a whole, and I particularly love Munakata and Fushimi on the same degree. But my love for each of them is a little different. I love both of them to be happy of course, but if Fushimi got flooded with angst, I will feel "oh yeah Fushimi angst, mmm delicious, give me more" but if I stumbled upon Munakata angst I will feel "noooo don't be sad, I don't want him to be sad, please someone fix it!" Yeah sorry Fushimi XD. And that is the reason why I can't enjoy Mikorei after Mikoto's death, because watching Munakata's constant brooding over Mikoto's death is damn uncomfortable for me and I can't even feel sad along with him for Mikoto's death (I don't hate Mikoto, but I am indifferent about him). So yeah, hearing how Munakata sounded genuinely upset when Scepter 4 members ditched him, when Fushimi ditched him, when I heard Munakata's lament that he was alone on the end of video, when more or less a week before he killed his friend, I can't enjoy it. I can't laugh for Munakata's misery, I feel uncomfortable as hell instead.

Please note, just I said, the track is not impossible to be canon. Is it possible for Awashima and the rest of Scepter 4 members to be annoyed enough by Munakata to ditch him even though not long ago Munakata killed his friend and almost died in the process? Yes. Is it possible for Fushimi to taunt Yata with Mikoto after Mikoto’s death? Yes. Is it possible for Munakata to be left alone in a bar? Yes. BUT, as Fushimi, Munakata, Awashima, and overall Scepter 4 fans, that kind of portrayal makes me uncomfortable so much, especially since I valued Scepter 4′s bond so much and don’t care (or you can say quite disliked) about Sarumi’s taunting and fighting, also Munakata angsting over Mikoto. Also if the lack of Yata’s anger and depressed over Mikoto’s death means that the Drama CD happened before Season 1 a.k.a December 2011 (Fushimi joined Scepter 4 on October 2010, so December 2010 would be his first YEP and he shouldn’t know about previous party), then as Scepter 4 nerds I need explanation why only ABCDEFGH, Fushimi, and Awashima that was expected to come when they were not on the same squad before and Fushimi even just an ordinary member of Intelligence Division that rarely associate with Swordsmen Squad as Hidaka pointed out. Compare that to another Scepter 4 annual event like Flower Gazing that included Zenjou, Yayoi, and even we can assumed that there are other Scepter 4 member joined on flower gazing on other places. Also, Flower Gazing as annual event is already mentioned 4 times but there's no mention of Scepter 4 year-end party except on that Drama CD.

Speaking about portrayal, I also don’t like some of jokes on that track. Namely when Munakata said that he installed surveillance camera on Scepter 4 dorm, Awashima’s dorm to be exact. I knew that Munakata is an S and can quite ignore the concept of privacy and personal space, but as a boss and a man, just like Fushimi said, that action is a crime. And not the funny one. Awashima should and must protest for that, no matter how loyal she is to Munakata. And Fushimi as the main advocate of privacy and personal space should not accept that kind of behavior from Munakata and didn’t let Munakata be with just a simple protest. Honestly, if I have a boss who pulled that stint of me, no matter how amazing he is, I will lose my respect on him. And I respect the hell outta Munakata. I will not say that the track is mischarasterized Munakata, since as you said Kabei Yukako (Yellow) is the writer and she wrote an amazing Munakata in LSW and Sand Castle story, but maybe she played with fandom jokes “tyrant Munakata” a little bit too hard.  So yeah, I prefer if that track, especially that particular aspect, is not canon. 

Not that I hate the whole track of course. I like some trivia about Scepter 4, especially the ones that was confirmed canon on other materials like Awashima loves plushies and Benzai has younger sister. I also like when Fushimi can baffle Munakata with his card trick. But still, Scepter 4 YEP Drama CD is uncomfortable for me. 

Also track like Megane of Blue is also written by Gora Orange, it didn’t break the fourth wall or seemed happened on alternate universe, but you don’t actually believe that in canon Munakata truly became crazy if he lost his glasses right? Especially since we already got 2 glasses-less Munakata and he turned out just fine (three if you count Optician Drama CD, which is canon since it was mentioned on Countdown). On drama CD, script writers often exaggerate characters to create a joke, either Gora or non Gora.

The best part of living in a big city, far away from home, surrounded by opportunity, is that no one knows you. The worst part of living in a big city, far away from home, surrounded by opportunity, is that no one knows you. This was particularly difficult for you, working as a private detective and trying to find cases that either wouldn’t put you in mortal danger or wasn’t commissioned by some cheapskate of a client - suffice to say, you spent most of your time skulking around the $2 taco truck across from your cramped, dinghy, semi-attic style living space (no one could even mistakenly call it an apartment). 

The heating had been acting funny over the past few days, which meant that you had been forced to travel to the second hand goods shop on the other side of the city to buy a second comforter for yourself. All so that you wouldn’t freeze before the godforsaken winter had even set in. And despite all that effort, the vent above your head had made the most incredibly outrageous noise and completely stopped working. That’s right. You were currently down from 20% heating to 20 F. 

“Hey!” There was no way your frustrated shouts were going unheard by the landlady. She was just unbelievably petty, never really having forgiven you for the time one of your potential clients had brought along a stray dog which had chased her scraggly looking cat for 20 blocks before you had finally caught up with them and managed to bring the terrified creature back home. 

“Mrs. Griffith! I know you can hear me!” You pulled on the nearest article of warmth - your decade old hoodie, complete with chili oil stains and a decently large hole under your armpit. 

“I need you to call the maintenance guy!” Why you couldn’t do this yourself, you never really understood. It’s not like you hadn’t tried to get a hold of the middle-aged guy’s number when he had dropped by to fix the faucet - he did all the odd jobs in the building - but clearly, the old lady had already warmed him up to the fact that you were no good. Not only did he refuse to give you his contact number, he never once picked up the phone when you managed to use your stellar detective skills to scrounge up his contact details from somewhere. You were starting to wonder if pettiness was a personality trait after the age of 55. 

“The heating is broken!” you yelled, voice starting to crack. That stupid cat had somehow made its way down the four flights of stairs between your room and the landlady’s floor, and was now attempting to scratch the screen of your laptop. Your only decent possession and the sole reason you were able to survive in these despicable conditions.

“Get away from that, you useless creature!” If you didn’t know any better, you would’ve sworn that the cat just threw you a smug look, taunting you because there was no way you could possibly do anything to your landlady’s pet. You were no real threat. 

“Whiskers? Where did you go?” Of course it was the single mention of her cat and not your 20 minutes of incessant yelling that brought her out of her apartment. “Don’t stray now, you never know what filth you could run into.”

You cursed under your breath. 

“Mrs. Griffith, the heating is broken. Could you please give maintenance a call?” You knew the old bat had heard you this time. You could see her shadow along the wall outside her apartment. “Or you could give me their number? That way I-”

“No need for that.” Of course there was no way she was going to give away any kind of control. “Never used to have so many problems in the building. You sure you didn’t break it yourself?”

“Why would I do that?” What possible reason could there be for you to sabotage your own living conditions…

“Who knows…” Even though you couldn’t see her face, you were pretty certain she was giving you a particularly dirty look.

“So you’ll give them a call?” Honestly, a small affirmation from her would have been enough to get you back into your place. 

But the events that transpired somehow culminated into the cat knocking over the bowl of food on the railing, followed by an almighty ruckus, and the very smelly remains of day-old fish stew landing gracefully on your head.

“Ah, look what you’ve done! You scared poor Whiskers!” 

The urge to throw the plastic bowl with all your force and smack the old lady right in the face was very strong. But you resisted. If nothing, but for the sake of your survival through winter.

“Is this a bad time?”

You whirled around to greet the owner of the voice which had somehow decided to catch you at the worst possible moment - cold, smelly, and frustrated, wearing a ratty sweatshirt, with bits of fish clinging to your hair.

The last couple of years spent spying on cheating spouses and absconding scammers must have trained your reflexes better than you had imagined. There was no other way to explain why you didn’t drop your laptop in shock when your eyes landed on the very tall, very broad frame of the country’s current acting heartthrob.

“K-kim Seokjin?”

He winked at you, as easy as breathing. “I want you to find someone for me.”
