I think it's an allegory for MTG and people like her

for the record, i'm not trying to be like. purposely hateful or anything, i'm just so deeply disappointed with her. this last year has been a mess and she's repeatedly acted in ways that, at the very least, rub me in the wrong way and at their worst have disgusted me and made me lose so much respect for/faith in her. miss americana has become a piece of performance art rather than any sort of meaningful activism.

she made a very public display of dating/hooking up with a bigot and basically said "fuck you, i do what i want" in response to valid criticism and then tried to smooth it over by working with one of the women he'd called slurs. almost every time she spoke this year, whether in an interview or through tree, she reinforced my worry that she views herself as untouchable and that any sort of negativity or criticism directed toward her should be discounted because she's an "underdog" and a woman, despite the fact that there are very real issues with her words and actions. and don't get me started on everything with football guy and his trump-loving ass.

she is absolutely allowed to do, say, date, fuck, etc. anyone and anything she wants. she can write songs about all of it. she can do damage control and pr and control the narrative however she chooses. she can run smear campaigns and drag names through the mud while maintaining she's the perpetual victim when she's arguably the one with the most power in any given situation. i can appreciate that fame presents a set of challenges that i will never experience or fully comprehend.

but i'm also allowed to have my opinions on it, especially when so much of it is so heavily publicized. there is so much we will never know and there is also so much we do know that we never should have. pretty much since eras was announced, she's become so deeply oversaturated and it went from being cool to see so much hype and getting a new album and new re-recordings to feeling like everything is about money and breaking records. it's become a machine, a content factory, and so many decisions feel rushed, incomplete, and incongruent. it doesn't feel like there's been real thought about the material itself and instead it's become about aesthetics and sensationalism.

i think that's why i'm so frustrated right now and it's highly likely that these albums will grow on me or at least some of the songs. i've been listening to the 12 songs i liked on repeat since i finished my initial run through each album and i already like them even more. but i wish that it could truly just be about the music for me. that's what's always been most meaningful to me about taylor is her lyricism and the stories she tells through her songs. but knowing everything i know and having seen everything i've seen over the past year, it's tainted my perception of the albums and the songs on them.

i think that taylor has a lot of growing to do as a person. i've heard people say that sometimes celebrities are frozen at the age they became famous and i think that really shows in taylor's case. the irony of a song being titled "so high school" was certainly not lost on me. a lot of her phrasing feels very juvenile, just as her treatment of joe and everything surrounding the end of their relationship has been. i never really had feelings about him one way or another, and as i mentioned above, there's a lot we'll never know about what happened between them. but she's been pushing her victim narrative so hard and the only thing i've seen from joe is his support of palestine. actions speak a lot louder than words. it changed so drastically from the initial news of their breakup being amicable to turning him into yet another villain. i have no doubt in my mind that taylor has been treated very poorly by a lot of the men in her life, and joe is likely not an exception. but i'm to the point where i have to take everything she says with a heaping tablespoon of salt.

at the end of the day, taylor's music is her own and i understand why she's said that she wants her work to be about the music and not about the men. i can see how it would feel invalidating to have her songs picked apart and attributed to the men they're written about. and i'm not even trying to do that here. but i can't recall a time when she's been so public about her relationships? in the past, it's felt a lot more like speculation, but jesus, between ratty and tk this past year, we've just been inundated with so much that unless i was an extremely casual fan that managed to escape her face on every news show, billboard, and social media website, i can't fathom not knowing what she's singing about on these albums. she can't have it both ways.

i still have all the music that came before ttpd, and like i said, with subsequent listens, ttpd will probably grow on me a bit, but idk man, i'm over it. and i think it's important to be willing and able to criticize or at the very least analyze your favorite media, whether it's music or tv or film or literature or whatever else. your favorite thing probably sucks in one way or another and pretending it doesn't doesn't make you a better person than someone who acknowledges it. these are complex, extremely nuanced things i take issue with and when it comes down to it, i will never know taylor personally and be able to talk to her about these things and get her point of view and her thoughts. that leaves me to say my piece, which is what this post is.

quick ttpd thoughts

ok so. i did listen to a leak so I had time to sit with the OG album for a while. I have not yet listened to all the Anthology tracks, but this not-doing of something is part of my album reaction. Bear with me.

First of all: I am insanely impressed with Taylor for being this raw and messy on record. More distinguished haters have said that this album once again feels like self-mythologizing, but I personally do not agree. User dancefloors had an excellent take on this: the album is emotional and messy to a degree where you feel like you should not be listening to it. At least that's how I felt.

However, that also has a downside. I find many of the lyrics, especially on the standard edition, to be unpolished or downright cringe. This rambl-y first draft type of writing might work for other artists, but I never feel like it works for Taylor. The second line of Fortnight is so awful that I was CONVINCED the leak I heard was AI, and people have talked at length about the tattooed Golden Retriever. Girl. Almost every song had an insane clunker or two hidden in it. This is not helped by what I personally (!) perceive to be a bit of a rehashing of imagery and themes that have been prominent in songwriting trends for the past few years. Killing the woman you are jealous of, Cassandra, religious imagery .... Don't get me wrong, I think the call for "originality" at al costs can be detrimental to art, but frequently with this album i felt as if lines were haparzadly chosen to fit a certain "aesthetic" that didn't mesh well with the rest of the song. Like. Nothing about "my husband's cheating. I wanna kill him." communicates any deeper emotion. (Compared to e.g. Samia's "I hope you marry the girl from your hometown and I'll fucking kill her and I'll fucking freak out.")

The introductory poem is one of the worst things i have ever read.

The thing is. I don't always do well with new releases, they are overwhelming, etc., but I listened to the first four tracks and was like "how can anybody think this is good". Which IS a hater take, and there is much I do enjoy about the album, and I am happy others like it.But with the already present repetition PLUS 15 Tracks .... it is a bit too much. I could go on and on about the repetition of words and themes that feels a bit trite (smalltown stuff, "starry-eyed", "precocious"), but I don't wanna. I wish there had been more editing, and I think I have talked at length before about how I do not like this new era of just putting out everything.

Alas. I did not click with this album and there are very few tracks i want to go back to. So Long, London is a favorite because of the concise lyrics and beautiful production, I can bop to Down Bad, but daddy I love him is fun imagery-wise, Clara/Sam/Sophia/Marcus is sad and also. A Lot., So High School, and I dig "You're not Dylan Thomas, I'm not Patti Smith, this ain't the Chelsea Hotel, we're modern idiots". The 2am tracks need more attention, but I already like Looking Into Windows (?) much more than a lot of other tracks - generally, I enjoy the more genuinely sad Joe tracks about the slow demise of a relationship much more than the fast paced high strung ones.

My Marauders era analysis of The Black Dog

Marauders fans are so excited about Taylor Swift having a song named The Black Dog. And yeah it’s cool cause Sirius is a black dog and Taylor’s Mskingbean89.

But I’m here to ruin your fun.

The Black Dog is about Nobleflower after Narcissa’s engagement to Lucius.

Here goes nothing:

Narcissa knows that Alice is hurting, and that it's all her fault. And while she chose to go through with the engagement, she's still mourning not just the physical intimacy, but the emotional intimacy she shared with Alice.

I just don't understand how you don't miss me In the Black Dog When Someone plays 'the starting line' and you jump up, but she's too young to know this song that was intertwined in the magic fabric of our dreaming

It baffles Narcissa how Alice can seem to move on so quickly from what was a life-altering love for Narcissa.

This speaks for itself. It feels wrong to call Alice a habit, but she was. And she was so much more. But it was easy for Narcissa to love her. It was as easy and natural as breathing. Now that she's had to give up that habit, everything else feels wrong without Alice in her life. It's a near indescribable pain.

Here it's confirmed what we've known, Narcissa is heartbroken after losing the love of her life. And while she was quick to get engaged to Lucius, she knows it will never come anywhere close to what she felt for Alice. She'll never feel that way, that safe, with anyone ever again. And while she felt she did the right thing by following her parents' wishes (the best laid plans) it wasn't the right thing for her.

Alice would often joke about how Narcissa needed some great man from a great pureblood family to complete her. So she began to jokingly "take car" of Narcissa, but that eventually evolved into a loving, devoted relationship until Narcissa believed she didn't need to marry. So it was a rude awakening to both her and Alice when Lucius proposed.

After spending so much time with her own thoughts, in her own depression, Narcissa begins to take on a scorned (some might say brainwashed) view of the relationship. She starts to blame Alice for it all. But despite the pain she knew she would face, she still entered into that relationship with Alice. And she begins to wish she never did, but those thoughts mix with the lasting feeling of love she felt.

Six weeks of breathing clean air i still miss the smoke

Even though everyone tells her its better for her to be with Lucius, she still misses the love of her life

Narcissa's not stupid. She knows that Alice blames her for it all burning down. And she knows Alice will only shit-talk Cissa among her close friends.

Narcissa is at such a dark spot in her depression here. Everything reminds her of Alice and she just can't take it

And hire a priest to come and exorcise my demons even if i die screaming And i hope you hear it

While in that deep, dark depression, Narcissa contemplates hiring a priest to get rid of her inner 'demons' that she's battling. But the idea that she might die screaming heavily insinuates that those demons - the memories with Alice - are too much to leave behind; they're so deeply ingrained in her that they make up the fabric of her being. Narcissa hoping Alice hears it is a pivotal moment in the song. She wants Alice to hear the pain that would be caused if those memories were to be ripped from her

And I hope it's shitty in The Black Dog When someone plays 'The Starting Line ' and you jump up, but she's too young to know this song That was intertwined in the tragic fabric of our dreaming cause tail between your legs your leavin'

This mirrors the first chorus, except it’s more angry. Narcissa hopes Alice doesn’t just miss her, but is miserable in those moments that remind her of what she had.

Beth has been acting strange for the past two months. I can't figure out why she has been acting weird, and I've asked, but she won't tell me what's wrong. I'm getting worried. 

 

Last month, she got me tickets to the era's tour. The tickets are for today, and she has been nervous all day, but when I ask what's wrong, she says nothing. I don't know what to think. 

 

But I need to get ready to go. 

 

 

We go and get in the car . When get there, Beth is acting weirder. I'm starting to get worried. "Beth, are you okay?" She looks at me with her beautiful smile and eyes and says, "I'm good." 

 

I just go with it. We get in and sit down. She comes out on the stage and starts to sing. 

 

We are halfway through the concert when Love Story starts playing.

a/n; this one was so fun to write!

It was a typical Tuesday night, with you casually dancing around your room and singing into your hairbrush to the music your best friend's- James -girlfriend doesn't like.

Until you pass by your window and notice James in his room. He had to have just gotten home from rugby, and he was on the phone. With a quick adjustment of your glasses, You can immediately tell he's stressed out by whoever he was talking to, and you knew he probably needed some comfort. So you ran to grab your notebook and sharpie, scribbling down on the paper;

"You Ok?"

and held it up to the window to catch his eye once he hung up. As he did so, he turned to face the window when he saw your paper, and he rushed to grab his, scribbling down;

"Tired of Drama"

He held up. You nodded, picking up your sharpie again to write; "Sorry );". You blushed profusely as he beamed at you, leaving you to look back down at your paper and scribble something else, just to see he had shut his curtains.

"I love you."

At school, you watched him and his girlfriend, Maddie interact. Maddie was everything you weren't. She wore short skirts, and You wore tee-shirts. She was cheer captain and you were on the bleachers. Even with their relationship, you always dreamt of the day when he would wake up and find what he was looking for, was there the whole time, You.

You guys often hung out together, much to Maddie's dismay. He was different around her, always trying to be cool and win her over. Yet pushing out the James you knew, the sweet dork who could ramble on for hours about rugby and sports and Spiderman.

You both sat peacefully on the bench, though his facial expression was a puzzling one.

"What's wrong?" You snickered at his face, "Hmm? Oh, nothing really, just noticed you weren't wearing your glasses." He shrugged, flashing a small smile. "I've been wearing contacts more lately." You admitted, not shamefully might I add. "I like you better with glasses." He nudged you playfully. "Yeah, right." You nudged back. James checked his watch, and a slight reluctant expression appeared. "Shit, I was supposed to meet Maddie for dinner tonight but I totally forgot." He let his face dip into his palms, "Doesn't she ditch you all the time?" You asked bluntly, You were clearly not a fan of this Maddie chick. "Guess so." He sighed, probably feeling like a total flake. "Do you really think she feels bad?" You tried to get through to him, "I bet she never feels like a flake." You snarled, letting your feelings get the better of you. "Look, she's still my girlfriend, Y/n. I get you don't like her but you have to support my decisions!" He snapped, not realizing how harsh he was being. "I get that, James. but you change yourself when you're around her, you act so differently and it makes me sick to watch you do that!" You stood up from your seat. "And if you don't see that she's using you for her own benefit, then I can't help you." You walked off, pissed. You guys had fought before, but it hadn't been over a girl he was dating.

James sat there and reflected for a minute, "You dickhead..." He muttered to himself, throwing his face into his hands once again. That moment was filled with huge emotions towards you, emotions he never really thought of clearly with you. Anger, Happiness, Love. He quickly stood up, and ran back to his house.

You dropped onto your bed in a wet sob, clutching onto the teddy bear that James had bought you for Christmas when he was just starting his first job. You felt guilt, deep painful guilt, you really didn't mean to snap at him, but you did.

James paced around his room before grabbing his notebook and pen, scratching down the same three words you had time after time again.

"I LOVE YOU."

He noticed your blinds were closed, so he took it upon himself to throw pebbles at your window.

You noticed a loud ding! sound on your window as you got up to investigate, pulling open your blinds and squinting at the words on his paper.

"What?" You wrote.

He tapped at the paper violently, waving it around gently, as you picked up your already opened notebook, which read;

"I love you"

"Have you ever thought, just maybe? you belong with me?"

okay, I'm gonna start this off by saying this whole thing hinges on whether or not the show is gonna keep mirroring Buck and Eddie's personal journeys and this is mostly about Buck, I have no idea what they're gonna do with Eddie lol. First of all, @aziraaphales made this set back when the finale aired about the similarities between Buck and Taylor and Buck and Natalia and that illustrates it beautifully, the whole she came back, they seem happy, are they really? and that's a point against Natalia lasting in my opinion. But the thing is, I think Bucktalia also mirrors Eddiana, and that's when things start to get interesting in my brand of insanity. You have Buck treating Natalia's hand, you have Eddie treating Ana's, Ana and Natalia being reduced to their jobs, the first date in broad daylight in a cafe of some sort, a second date at home being interrupted by the rest of their lives (if you push a bit and think about Kameron's pregnancy, both dates are interrupted by their children even if the baby isn't Buck's on the ways that matter), you have the picture-perfect ending at home after a near-death experience, so the parallels are there too. And that means one important parallel, Buck holding on for the wrong reasons the same way Eddie did, which could doom that relationship further, but also leave Buck spiraling. Because if we're comparing personal journeys, Buck is in a state that's a mix of season 4 Eddie trying to be happy through the trauma and outside looking in/fear-o-fobia Eddie. I think we can even directly parallel some stuff, like, I truly believe the cemetery is the way Buck would handle the outside looking in kitchen talk if that went the other way around.

But the thing is, Buck needs to deal with the shit that happened to him before getting together with Eddie so I'm choosing to look at these as fuel for my Buck Breakdown beliefs. Unlike Eddie, Buck actually died, so that changes the dynamic a little bit, there's also the way that Buck doesn't care about his own life enough to break over dying, but while Eddie's PTSD has many triggers, the thing that actually breaks him is the knowledge that he didn't save the people he thought he saved. So my grand theory here is something happening to Maddie, Bobby, or Christopher that makes Buck lose it. I don't really think they would do something to Chris, but using him would have a similar effect if it wasn't for the fact that it would also break Eddie. Eddie himself doesn't count in this situation unless is both Eddie and Chris, because Buck would be forced to keep it together if something happened to Eddie for Chris' sake. Or maybe if they like, killed off the Buckley parents and forced Buck to deal with that grief. But Maddie or Bobby, dangerous situation, close call, hospital stay, honestly, something that would leave them in enough danger to trigger Buck, low-key don't think you need much to trigger that man. But trigger, Buck losing it, Eddie talking Buck down (how would Eddie find out Buck is losing it? I don't know, plot convenience, I like the idea of divorced-era Buddie and Eddie storming the loft because he's tired of Buck's bullshit and finding him, or maybe someone from dispatch calls Eddie because there's been a call from Buck's address, I don't know, they can get creative there), Buck working towards working his own shit out. But we're in this weird season 4/season 5b mix, right? How do we end s4? Near-death experience that calls back to a previous trauma, big revelation, aborted love confession.

One thing I refuse to compromise on is the fact that Eddie had his oh! moment during the shooting (it's my truth I am not letting it go) so you can probably see where I'm going here, right? A Buck in a better mind space almost dying by chance, getting saved by Eddie, and realizing something. You see the vision? Current vision goes back and forth between equipment malfunctioning, Buck falling, and Eddie being the only one close enough to get to him, this usually goes around a cliff, a bridge, and Buck falling into water (I know the truck bombing is not technically equipment malfunction but equipment did try to kill him, and water is Buck's worst enemy lol), or Buck and Eddie stopping to help someone, and shit going to hell, this vision usually goes with Buck and Eddie seeing a car crash of some sort, again someone drove off a cliff or off a bridge, they go to help, Buck gets trapped in the car, Eddie needs to save him (trapped under a vehicle, water) or just straight up having them drive of a bridge.
