on that neon j 1010 family dynamic thing post tags- I THINK I WOULD GO CRAZY IF THEY WEREN'T ALSO SOLDIERS? I don't read a ton of fic but it's important to me that like. They're family in the way that being immediately willing to die for someone makes you family. 1010 are his """"sons"""" by technicality at best, because he LITERALLY made them to some degree- He has a ""father"" style role because if they need to be taught how to navigate the world in any kind of newfound awareness (if you do this) that's his job, or because he is directly responsible for their behavior by the public-

I dunno all of these things just live in my brain all the time rent free so like. The idea of boiling them down to any kind of nuclear or normal family doesn't even register- He calls them "Troops," and I can even see him in a more casual setting saying "Boys" (it is a boyband), but that dynamic of being soldiers in the same war (literal or metaphorical) and of being a team, or perhaps a powerful unit that functions at maximum capacity at all times because they need to HAVE that kind of potency in their dynamics to perform at 110%- that's so important to me

Listen to me I am going to grab and shake you around a bit (/positive) for a minute here hang on.

Bear with me as I dig up all the things I've said about this so far and this could be significantly more but I am dragging at least this up.

If they became sentient enough to question whether the things they sing about in their songs is something they've ever actually experienced, it makes sense that they'd look back at each other and question if what they have is that kind of "love." And of course, it isn't—they don't share the things they lie about in lyrics to make the fans swoon. And even if they tried, in application, it would feel... different from what they lie about even if the actions are the same. There's something missing in that that they aren't fully grasping and they assume it must be love. They don't love the Captain and they don't love each other because they don't want to seduce the Captain (it'd be violating so many things to even attempt that with someone that isn't their rank in the first place, if we bring the military aspect into this) and it feels... not the same to seduce each other. It doesn't work cleanly. They know there's something missing that they aren't grasping. Maybe they even look for this concept within each other and find there's something but it isn't quite that because all they know is pretend. ... If you asked them, they're certainly not siblings because they can't be, but they're also not lovers because they have something missing.

They're not siblings. But they have the concept of a brotherhood with each other and it's complicated but it's human. They became the people that they are now in relation to one another, in each other's gravity, they've been all intertwined since they began to conceive the concept of being unique.

The relationship they all have with their Captain is mutually straightforward—he commands, they obey, and he allows them room to relax and he actually tries to speak and bond with them—but with each other? Not so much.

So, sure. Let's call them... bandmates. Sailors. Soldiers. That's what their occupations are and their relationship to each other on paper, technically.

They may still have enough of the military aspect drilled into them that 'brothers in arms' feels comfortable despite the fact that they aren't at war anymore. They might shorten that to 'brothers,' in the sense they were if they were more of unit than a boyband.

At least that's a lot less difficult for them to say.

#sometimes i like it better if 1010 never call neon 'dad' because he's... he never can be their father. by definition. #he takes care of them but that's out of necessity. they work for him in a different way now but not much has changed. #they feel different for him now than they do the concept of just that man at war. #but even that is complicated.

#the relationship they all have with each other is so much more complicated than that. #they can't be siblings because they've never known what siblings are #and they can't be lovers because they've never known what love is outside of what they write for the fans and they don't do that.

#so. where do they go from here? #what else is there? #calling them family just feels like it isn't enough but I don't have a term for that and neither do they.

About the reason why they still call each other brothers, even if they don't remember anything of their former lives.

Because back then, even if it was programmed into them, they were brothers. They died for each other, they killed for each other, they lived for each other. They would spill blood for blood, trade life for life, if they could.

Now... they're. Different. They don't remember anything from back then, Neon made sure of that, but they still hold each other to that same regard, and it means something now that they're able to feel that bond they all have.

They're brothers now, not because they woke up together, but because they would still die for each other, still live for each other. They just don't cause harm, not anymore.

But they're able to say it to each other and mean it now.

Thinking about them naturally being able to form a different-but-similar bond with Neon, that he's their Captain but he also seems to fulfil other roles for them, too, so other titles also apply.

But them having complex relationships with one another is a concept that I love.

They're sailors. They protect each other. They kill for each other. They die for each other. They live for each other, even if they don't have to anymore and even if they're dispensable.

They have a hierarchy. They're all individuals outside of one another. They're all exactly the same. The only thing "unique" is a few colors and hairstyles, and that can change.

But they're also a... a boyband. Like, a BTS-esque boyband. A boyband that sings and dances and cannot stop talking about how sexy they and each other are, apparently.

Bonus funny thing that would also no longer be funny if you just assume they are only exactly like family and nothing else:

If they ever do QnA's, the number of questions they'd be asked that are outright laughable. Let alone some of the more questionable letters they might get. Imagine fandom antics but they can just send mail to the idols. Imagine if they're asked questions that make them have to troubleshoot through everything they are and are not allowed to say with each other and with Neon for good measure.

Will Neon J ever get over Martha? Will they ever meet again?

Neon will never fully get over Martha, he will always hold some kind of love for her in his heart, even after all the shit she did to him and if he did find out the shitty things she did to 1010. He is not hoping to get back with her, but he won't deny that he still loves her and she will almost always be in the back of his mind when/if he starts dating again.

As for meeting, yes they will. Martha will one day bring a fully grown Aria to Neon so that he can meet Aria's child. It was Aria who wanted to meet him again because she still sees him as her real dad since he raised her til she was 9. She just never had the knowledge of where he was or if he was still alive.

Once she has her child Martha lets slip that Neon is still alive and her and him still talk through letters. After explaining who Neon is now (he had a different name before becoming a cyborg) Aria wants to meet him so he can meet his grand-kid and so she can connect with 1010 and have them meet their nephew/niece (still deciding the kid's gender).

And instead of being normal about it, Martha decided to just SHOW UP unannounced, totally freaking out Purl and causing a slight shit-show to happen. But Neon does end up getting to see Aria again and meet his grand-kid with lots of happy static crying as he finally got to meet his daughter again after about 20 years.

Martha and Neon have a real conversation face-to-face as most of 1010 stay with Aria and the baby (Purl dipped basically the second they saw Martha). They talk a bit and Martha ends up telling stuff about his parents since she went to stay with them to get away from an abusive partner she had after the divorce.

They won't ever get together again, they won't even try it. They both care for each other still, but they just don't love each other the same as when they were younger. But I will say, that this would be very good closure for Neon that would allow him to fully and finally date again without any regret or guilt eating at him.

It would also give Martha a chance to apologize to 1010 for her actions to them. She knows she will never be able to make it up to them, but she does apologize and tries to at least make amends as best as she could.

I don't see Martha becoming a big part of Neon and 1010's life, but they would definitely be there for Aria and the baby as much as possible. She would go back to her own home with Martha, but they would all visit each other on special holidays.

Neon might even visit his parents as Martha and Aria live close to them, but only because 1010 would want to see them and find out about their own heritage. It would not be because Neon wants to. Heck, Neon would try to discourage them from wanting to go for fear of what his parents might think of 1010 and how they identify. Though Aria and Martha let him know that they changed, he doesn't believe them.

So a question, how do you feel about djss?

I like him a lot ^o^! I think he has the BEST character design in the entire game, and his VA does so much to bring him to life.

I think I've said this before, but DJSS is the *reason* I decided to buy NSR over Mad Rat Dead (besides my music preference). I just really had to meet him, and I was not disappointed when I did.

He's the first character I ever drew from the game because I basically fell in love with him at first sight.

The only real "negatives" I have to say about him is that I don't find him sympathetic at all. I just don't buy into sad boi DJSS propaganda. He is an asshole, was an asshole, and will probably always be an asshole.

But, I don't think he needs to be sympathetic to be likeable. I love that he's just an unrepentant prick from beginning to end, but that does mean that outside his aesthetics, I don't have anything nice to say about him. However, him being such a big prick means that it's very fun to bully him, so he's great for comics when I need something bad to happen to somebody >:3c.

So in short, I love him a lot, and do not take my lack of posting about him as meaning otherwise.

Let's talk about DJ Subatomic Supernova...

Ah yes one of the most eccentric, funniest, and coolest designed bosses. DJSS is the very first boss you fight and acts as a sort of test after the lights up audition tutorial. He is very interesting and his personality is through the roof, so let's get started shall we?

"What have you done today? Simpletons!"

DJSS has an ego, you could say it's planet sized (ba-dum tss). Anyways, even though he has an ego he is one of the most loved characters in NSR. I can see why, he has a huge personality and a really cool theme going on with it being based on space.

Unlike other NSR artists we do know he had two jobs before becoming an artist, a university professor and an astrophysicist, which explains his vast knowledge of space. He knows a lot about space and uses his knowledge in really funny ways. One example is this quote: "You remind me of......Pluto! Once thought to be a planet of the solar system but no longer is."

I love love love his personality and the fact that his head is basically a black hole. I always thought that his head breaking symbolized his ego getting shattered. Seeing that he thinks even if NSR is defeated, his music will last after the fall of NSR.

I could go on and on but I'm gonna save it for later.

His boss fight is very fun.

You start out with him at his turn table and you hitting disco balls to damage him. This is very interesting as you move around him, with DJSS being in the center. He's the center of the solar system in his fight.

Second phase he gets bigger and now it looks like you are in a solar system as the disco balls are now planets. He has more attacks, such as being able to throw comets at you and still being able to move the planets like he's turning a record. His head becomes more shattered as the fight goes on.

Third phase he makes himself even larger and not he has noodle arms. Not only does he still have his planets and comets but now he also has a laser. While this phase isn't harder you do have to worry about a lot of things at once.

Once you get through those three phases you then have to reach him. His head will then crack fully and a black hole will appear, you have to run to DJSS while dodging music notes along the way. This is fairly easy to get through as you have enough time to dodge the music notes.

I feel his battle, or phases rather, correlate with his ego/personality. If you ever pay close attention to his head it starts to slowly crack, like his ego is gradually crumbling. He gradually grows in size to assert he is in control of what's around him, like someone with some huge ego.

His music genre is Disco Stellarum House, for those who don't know what that is, it's a genre of edm but the inspiration could come from disco house. Disco house is an edm genre that mixes the funky tunes of disco with the electronic sounds of house music. You can clearly hear this in his theme. His theme is an absolute bop when it comes on, you can't help but to dance to it.

He is also self-centered with him depicting himself as the center of the universe, but I went over that earlier. I wanna talk about the record cover when B2J defeats him.

They are literally using his head like a basketball. They are dunking his head in a basketball hoop. THAT'S HILARIOUS AND SO FUNNY, just imagine you've been defeated by these "plutonians" and they're using your head as a basket all. Pure, funny, and hilarious to think about.

Dj Subatomic Supernova is a very fun character and has a lot of appeal to him. This may be why people love him so much.

So let me ask you all a question.

"Hi-Fi RUSH did everything No Straight Roads was trying to do but better." In terms of gameplay and polish? Definitely. But personally, NSR's art, characters, and music made much bigger impressions on me than HFR. I cannot remember a single standout original track from HFR that isn't a cover (not saying it doesn't have any bangers; the music is good— but all the rock tracks kinda blend together after a while), while NSR's music stands out immediately. Mayday and Zuke are also way more entertaining MCs than Chai. Fight me.

(For the record, I love both games. I'm just annoyed at HFR fans putting NSR down to make their game look better when it also has flaws.)

☆ DJSS falling in love headcanons ☆ DJSS X Reader

This is a pretty long read whoopsie ;;

☆ DJSS is a rather complicated case, on one hand you could say he's expressive but that is moreso a facade than anything. his grandiose behaviour is something he does to further the narrative that he's trying to push. That this DJ SUBATOMIC SUPERNOVA is beyond anything the world could imagine, he's above such trivial things that are befitting lowly humans such as you all. So something such as emotions? and feelings for others? should be below him would it not? He's someone who doesn’t handle intimate feelings very well. It’s difficult for him to come to terms with having feelings for someone else let alone platonic emotions, both from fear of rejection and the notion of that he'd never be good enough or worth anyone's true effort and time. He's used to having people at arms length never letting them get close enough to see the man behind the veil.

☆ Any past attempts at close relations have always ended up in failure due to his personality and façade, he struggles with understanding peoples emotions and the ways others think. He may be attentive and observant of the people around him but he's not very receptive to their attempts of so called friendly relations, everything must be logical, calculated and fit the design he has planned perfectly, these fortuitous attempts through him off balance.

Everything must be either transactional in his head. Give or take and he's the one mostly doing the taking.

NSR is just a stepping stone for the grander plans in life, you may think he's friend with the fellow charters but I few it more complicated than that.

What does it mean to like someone if they provide nothing for you to gain? It's illogical and an anomaly

☆ He can't perceive the notion of liking someone just because. At first he doesn't even register it's crush, you're just a stray planet in his orbit. Just a minuscule dot in the ever-growing galaxy, nothing of worth. Next to nothing when compared to him. But you stay, you continue to orbit him. You spin on an axis that is unfamiliar and foreign to his core that for some reason he catches himself looking at.

You were unplanned, unwanted and a nuisance that wouldn't go away.

His body couldn't ignore the gravitational pull that always found him, drawing closer to you whether in word or body. ☆ Although he’s a seemingly emotionless man in regards to matters that are not within his interest on the outside and rather talented in hiding his true feelings, he’s the type of person to become flustered by small things such as the way you laugh or smile at him, despite how brazen and bold some of his actions and words are. Though spotting those subtle differences is hard, but if you look close enough you can see the way that his orb changes shades. The ways that the sparkles shift to glow just a tad brighter, the cosmic clouds entrapped within him shifting as the waves brew into a storm of emotion that even he couldn't predict.

The plantery rings on his jacket spin a little faster, and if you really catch him off guard? You can see glimpse of a aura / halo hidden deep within the confines of his hoody. Spinning and rotating just a tad. You're drawing things out of him that he had pushed down for centuries, an unprecedented shift in his reality. You were an anomaly that has sent ripples throughout his very existence and now he's feeling the waves of the aftermath that is now changing the protectory of his life.

Seriously, he’d wrap an arm around you without a second thought if he's boasting about himself and wanting you to back within his brilliance n shine. But the moment you ask him to go somewhere like lunch or someplace else. He's just riddled with questions and doesn't seem to understand why you'd want him Anxiety dripping down his back, he'd psyche himself out of it trying to ignore the way his orb displays a myriad of shades that toooottally weren't there before. ☆ So when DJSS actually realizes this is a crush: he can be a little bit distant. Honestly though, I can see him being either one of two ways: Confident but he amps up his façade like crazy that he thinks he can prove his worth by showboating his glory or as previously mentioned. He would definitely want to cultivate his relationship with you before bringing it to the next level as a result of both of these possibilities but it's entirely dependent on how you react on how things go from there. Will you be the time to reach forward if he's cold and distant to slowly chip away at the ice barricade his heart? Will you be able to dismiss the grand act he puts own and venture into the vast depths to find what lurks beneath.

There's someone there wanting to be love, he doesn't realize it yet until he feels the ice of the great unknown nipping at his neck bringing with it the dread of loneliness that has forever plagued his existence.

All of this would be like second nature to him, but once he realizes exactly why he feels the way he does, he would distance himself a little bit to recollect and organize these new emotions. He's not prepared for this change, he can't seem to categorize or make sense of anything you've done to him. ☆ If you two do miraculously end up together, DJSS wouldn't do one of those big grand confession he thinks they're rather ridiculous for something like him. He's THE DJ Subatomic Supernova, he's not going to waste his time on some silly confession. He’ll eventually gather his thoughts and get his shit together and ask you on a date. If you say no, he's mentally prepared for this anyway. He'll just try and cease all the changes you've made to him effective immediately and try to push down and suffocate his emotions

Like he normally does ☆ He wouldn't gush about you like others do about their partners, He's not that kind of guy. But it won't stop him from certainly talking about you a lot. It doesn’t take long for others to catch onto just how much he likes to brag about you. So much so, that people often have to tell him to shut up. He's annoyed so many of his staff members about this already

You think his gloating about himself was bad?

He's upping the ante and gloating about YOU TOO. ☆ Totally the jealous type of lover, he wants to be the only one that gets to touch you that way. To hold you? To kiss you? To look upon you fondly with just enough sweetness that you blush. That's for him and his eyes only. It bothers him if someone is pestering you or trying to flirt. If someone talks about you too fondly for too long it really gets under his skin

You'll often find his orb growing darker by the second, you know he's not the type to hide his dislike of someone ☆ BIG HAIRY GUY! You think after everything I've said he'd hate being touched? Nope! He's touched starved and wants nothing more to be held and cuddled, once those walls are down and he learns to trust his feelings and you there's no stopping him from keeping his hands off you one way or the other. You can find him coiling his arms around you entangling you completely as he elongates his limbs to ensnare you completely. It's either draped on your shoulder, holding your hand or around your waist When he demands affection there’s no getting around it until he gets what he wants

Call him selfish and jealous, but you're his and he'll do anything to make that obvious to anyone around him ☆ The way to his heart? Cook for him, He's not the best in the kitchen mediocre at best, some of his attempts end up in disaster. Cooking is not logical, so many factors and things he needs to account for that can change on a dime and he hates that. So he avoids cooking as much as possible which means he either skips meals or substitutes for rather lacking options.

It shows him that you care and that you pay attention to him in ways that others do not, seriously it means a lot to him even if he has trouble showing that to you. Sometimes even you make him lose the words to say, which is surprising . .. given him.

I think DK West could have been Mayday's brother instead of Zuke's

I get that the point of May's arc is the revolution and Zuke's is fixing mistakes he did in the past, but honestly I think we would have been fine with Eve in Zuke's past, and West in May's. That way we would have also had much more insight into her past like Zuke, instead of Zuke havinng a mountain of backstory compared to May yknow?

Not to say I dislike Zuke and West's shared history, I do love it a lot, but idk I feel that if they had to cut out a lot of May's lore they could have sacrificed a bit of Zuke's for her

The Fall Series: Part III

Porthos watches the line of your shoulders, the straightness of your spine as you sit on your horse. It’s a quiet ride back to the garrison and he notices that there’s a slight bend to the normally straight and elegant lines of your posture. You were confused by the severe reaction to the dried forget-me-nots, the demands that you accompany them back to the garrison until the culprit had been caught. So far, no one’s given you a reasonable explanation for the return to Paris. 

But you did it. You packed bags, locked up the only place you had called home, and mounted your horse with the resignation of a soldier going to war. They all expected tears, protests, weeping and wailing and gnashing of teeth, but you didn’t deliver in any of those reactions. It was impressive to say the least. And if that impressed Porthos, your arrival at the garrison was even more spectacular. You follow them all to Treville’s office but when Athos tells you it’s best for you to wait downstairs, you make your stand. 

“I will not wait while evidence concerning my grandfather’s murder is being discussed.” 

Athos shows Treville the dried flowers and the Captain nods solemnly. “This is not going to be a pleasant conversation and is going to take a lot of explanation.” 

Your response is to close the office door and fold your hands in front of you. “Then I guess you better start explaining.”  

The suspect is a female assassin, Milady DeWinter. She has a tangled past with Athos but that was all the information that was delivered in your presence. Porthos makes a note that you’re not interested in the details which is surprising. Most women, in his experience, loved gossip but not you. You just continue to be an enigma, one he wants to figure out eventually. 

“So my understanding is we have the culprit,” you summarize, “but not the reason.” 

“We believe Milady is an agent for the Cardinal,” Treville says. “Did Claude have any dealings with the Cardinal? The Red Guard? Anyone from the King’s court?” 

You shake your head. “None that I knew about. When he left Paris, he cut all ties with the palace. He didn’t want that kind of attention out at the village. The only Musketeers that continued to visit were you and General DeFoe a couple times. The Red Guard wouldn’t have dared to step foot on our property.” 

Both you and Treville duck your heads to hide a small smile. There was a story behind that statement and Porthos makes a mental note to ask you about it later on tonight. But the shared moment of levity only lasts for just that before seriousness returns to the group. You take your leather gloves off your hands and fiddle with them, a sign that you’re lost in thought and slightly nervous, Porthos is realizing. 

“Captain,” you hesitate briefly before barrelling ahead with your question. “Did my grandfather ever tell you who my father was?” 

Treville sighs and shakes his head. “No, he never told me. The only thing I knew about the matter was that he was someone Claude wanted your mother to stay far, far away from. You as well.” 

“But he never gave any hints as to whom it could have been? A Musketeer? A Red Guard? A farmer? Anything?” 

“He was hellbent on keeping it a secret and told no one as far as I know.” Treville leans forward on his desk. “What are you thinking?” 

“If this woman is an agent for the Cardinal, then the directive would have come from the Cardinal himself. What could he have possibly wanted with my grandfather’s death if they had no interactions with each other?” 

“You’re thinking the Cardinal knows who your father is?” Athos asks. 

You shrug and D’Artagnan speaks up. “Or he is her father.” 

Aramis tuts. “Oh come now, the poor girl’s been through enough. Let’s not put that thought out there.” 

You’re still twisting the broken-in leather of your gloves. “I, uh, I have letters that my mother wrote before she died. I also have her journals. When she talks about the love of her life, she refers to him as ‘A.’” 

It’s as if all the air has been sucked out of the room. You pick up on the change in the atmosphere but don’t understand why. Porthos realizes everyone else is too shellshocked by the possibility so he’s the one that connects the dots for you. 

“The Cardinal’s first name is Armand.” 

It takes you a moment to register the significance but when you do, your hands still. “Oh my god. I didn’t really think there would be any credibility to that hypothesis. But, if I am his…daughter, why kill my grandfather?” 

Treville sits back in his chair. “To bring you to Paris. He would know that would be the only logical path for you to take. The village would freeze you out, forcing the forge to close. No marriage prospects. He would know from church records that I was listed as your godfather and would find a place for you in Paris.”  

“Why now though?” 

Athos sighs. “The poisoning at the Countessa’s trial.”

“So what,” Porthos asks, “he’s trying to make amends? Isn’t it a bit late for that?” 

Aramis rubs the back of his neck. “Near death experiences tend to alter how you view certain…life choices. He could be trying to find some absolution before death arrives with certainty.” 

“This is only conjecture,” you say. “How do we find any confirmation of this?” 

Athos chuckles. “We have to present her at court. Watch his response to her appearance.” 

“She needs a position or a title to be presented,” D’Artagnan says. “What’s going to be the reason?” 

Treville smiles. “Whenever I appoint someone at the garrison, I need to present them at court for the King’s approval. It’s all for show, just an old piece of tradition. It wouldn’t be the first time I’ve presented the new armorer’s apprentice.” 

“Would be the first time the apprentice was a woman though,” Porthos counters. 

You nod with a firm sense of resolve. “Either way, it’ll get me in there. He doesn’t have to accept the appointment.” 

“Meanwhile,” Treville turns to Athos, “try to find out if Milady DeWinter knows anything about why Claude was the target.” He turns back to you. “Now, what can you make in three days to present as a gift to the King and Queen for your presentation?” 

You smile with more ease than you’ve had these last two days. “I have a few ideas. I’ll be ready.”

;NSR DJSS - General Headcanons

I got an ask asking for DJSS' love languages (don't worry! working on it!) but then it hit me that I don't think enough about DJSS to talk about love languages right away, so I'm getting this out of my system to try and fleshen out the way I write him!

The most healthy and solid friendship DJSS has is with Eve.

Eve's post is still fresh on my mind, so it got me thinking about how DJSS and Eve are very similar - like, two sides of the same coin, or two opposites in the same spectrum. But before I get carried away, let's talk about DJSS.

Out of all megastars within NSR, DJSS is very clearly the one with the least amount of connections to other characters, at least in the way he's presented in-game. Like, all of them are connected to NSR and Tatiana because they work for her, that's obvious - but the Sayu Gang have each other, Yinu has her parents, Neon J has 1010, Eve and DK West both have Zuke and Tatiana/NSR respectively. Tatiana has Kliff, the Goolings and Mayday.

DJSS is just. There?

Maybe it's because he's the tutorial boss, but very similarly to Eve, themes of loneliness and not being appreciated enough or understood are prominent in his background. The casettes literally show him spiraling from an underappreciated but very passionate teacher to a very influential but egocentric megastar.

There's just something about how DJSS and Eve share loneliness as a theme. And how both of them also fully embody their work, becoming a personification of their craft and passions so that their self-worth and identity is DIRECTLY tied to how said passions are received and perceived. To others, music and art are simply an extension of themselves, an important part of their lives, not the whole of it. But DJSS and Eve? You can't separate them from their work. Again, the Sayu Gang are a bunch of teens bonding over a shared interest. Yinu is a megastar BECAUSE of her family, not by CHOICE, she plays the piano FOR her deceased father. Neon J is, first and foremost, a war veteran and protector of Vinyl City before he is a musician, even if dancing and music are his passions.

There is also something to be said about how their respective journeys are opposites of each other yet end the same way. They've gotten what they've wanted, but they're stagnant and unfulfilled.

We see DJSS starting as a starry-eyed teacher, thanking the THREE students AND A JANITOR who came to his lessons because he's grateful for anyone who will listen to him. He's using his passion and work to teach others and expand their minds and whatever other cool one-liners he says in his videos and cutscenes. This directly mirrors Eve, who starts as a self-loathing, deeply insecure artist who uses art as a way to cope and vent. (If you read my Eve post, throwback to the duality theme - outside and inside. DJSS is channeling his work to the world, to the outside. He's looking for people who understand him. Nadia is channeling her work to herself, to the inside. She's looking to understand herself.)

The middle part of their whole journey shows a moment of introspection and healing for both of them.

DJSS reconnects with his love for music and the reason he even became a teacher in the first place - not out of love for teaching (which is another point I wanna talk about later in this post) but for a genuine love and intrigue for the universe. After years of trying to get anyone to listen, he finally remembers how it feels to look up at the sky. He finds a way to merge both music and space as a means to further his goal.

Eve heals because she believes she's found someone who can complete her, someone who isn't herself but who can understand and see her just as good. She doesn't hide her pink side, she doesn't hide her face with her hair, she is shown to be very, very lively, excited and intense. This is the moment she realizes she can be understood and loved, all the things she saw as impossible before meeting Zuke. Her art reflects this, she can now focus on something other than hating herself.

(It's very important to me that we remember her heart piece with Zuke is made out of recycled bottles. Both DJSS and Eve were shown to have this thing for helping others - DJSS through teaching and Eve through art.)

And then, their last collectible shows them at their worst.

DJSS has finally managed to be influential enough to have thousands of people actually pay attention to what he's saying. And he explicitly says that, even though he's gotten this far, he feels empty. And he feels empty because all of his work will disappear, because he will be forgotten in a few generations. And we see how music has replaced his love for the universe, it's a subtle shift in which DJSS goes from wanting to learn and teach others about something he's deeply passionate about from wanting his music and hard work to live on forever through space.

There's a metaphor somewhere in there about DJSS' legacy being not his work as a teacher, astrophycisist or even a pillar of the EDM movement - but a few of his songs. Attached to an NSR satellite. Going through the empty void of space.

And then there's Nadia, all alone again. Because she's gotten so comfortable with the idea of being understood, that she expected Zuke to see everything the same way she did, and therefore setting his hair on fire wouldn't be that big of an issue. And this is her worst fear, but it doesn't hurt as much as she thought it would - because she's expected this to happen at some point, even when she was at her happiest with Zuke.

I want to draw a line between this moment and the way their loneliness permeates in their words and actions - DJSS who has tried for years to reach out to like-minded people, finally has an audience that respects him, he still feels unfulfilled and empty. And he further distances himself from everything by setting his sights and his legacy on THE COLD VACUUM OF SPACE. Eve, who has always believed she would end up alone, IS NOW ALONE AND ABANDONED (from her perspective anyways, since it would be unfair to say Zuke was a horrible monster for leaving a relationship this complex) and yet she doubles down on finding someone like her.

DJSS states that no one is able to think like him, no one within NSR shares his ambition nor vision - he's resigned. Eve states that she will bring everyone to her level one way or another - she's desperate. Two sides of the same coin. Two extreme opposites in the same spectrum.

It all boils down to believing that somewhere out there, whether in Vinyl City or the universe, there's someone who can really appreciate them.

The two conceal a sense of inferiority, the difference being that Eve's comes from a place of pure, genuine hatred for herself (if her work can't be understood, she can't be understood. if her work can't be appreciated, she can't be appreciated) and DJSS' comes from a place of blind confidence in his own potential and ideas (if his work cannot be understood, it's because no one has the ability to understand it. if his work cannot be appreciated, it's because no one is sensible enough to appreciate it).

There is also something about how, at their worst and/or when they feel threatened, they seem to switch?

This is most notable in Eve's boss fight, in which she acts condescending and dismissive to both Mayday and Zuke - saying all the things she knows will hurt just for the sake of hurting Zuke. She establishes her superiority over those who can't understand her, similar to how DJSS treats B2J initially. And in DJSS' case, hints of this reversal can be heard in his casettes, already explained above. He somewhat resembles Eve during her final section, a resigned and numb acceptance to being alone.

I think these two would be friends because they would be able to recognize their similarities - not openly address them, mind you, that's too much for either of them to handle - but enough to just chill with each other. There is an underlying feeling of understanding between them, even if all they do is hang out to do superficial things, gossip or rant about work.

And I like to think they're both fine with this arrangement, because sometimes people need relationships that aren't mentally or emotionally exhausting or intense! Sometimes you just need a buddy who shares a similar trauma that neither of you will address and who wants to go bitch about Stacy from HR! It's an unlikely friendship that surprises everyone, but once they stop to think about it, it just makes sense for them to click - at least with the façades they present to the world.

No matter how hard he tries to rebrand, DJSS knows that he'll always be a teacher at heart. Not necessarily a good one, but a teacher anyway.

TOOK ME FUCKING YEARS TO GET TO THIS POINT BUT ANYWAY.

I really like that one post I saw through the NSR tag about how DJSS makes sense as the tutorial boss because he used to be a teacher, we can assume that there was a time in his life where he loved to teach and shape the minds of the future generations. It's a little meta connection that makes sense to me!

And I like to think that this is something that DJSS can't ever get rid of - the need to just teach. It can come across as DJSS not being able to shut his mouth when it comes to telling people why they're wrong and why he's right, but at the end of the day, he's still trying to clarify misconceptions and teach others new things. It just happens through layers and layers of his condescending attitude.

Of course, this also doesn't apply to just teaching, it applies to learning as well.

DJSS strikes me as someone curious and very driven, instead of asking others why, he sets out to find out answers himself - either because it's easier and faster, because he has something to prove, because of he's so full of autism and hyperfixates easily or whatever other reasoning you like the most.

I like the idea of a DJSS who knows his worth and knows he shouldn't bother trying to argue with people who clearly don't care about facts, logic and research, let alone putting the effort to learn or have an open mind - those simpletons who aren't worth his time - but still struggles with keeping his mouth shut.

During his boss fight, he immediately dismisses B2J because they're small fry, they're not even here for him, they're here for inconsequential reasons that he doesn't have time for. Why should he even entertain them? AND THEN HE DOES. HE GETS RILED UP AND JUST GOES ON TO TALK ABOUT HIS ENDEAVORS AND GOALS ANYWAY.

He REALLY reads as a guy who makes the funniest of jokes and can't help but explain them anyway - and he gets away with it most of the time.

Very organized, detail-oriented person, loves routine and to plan things beforehand. DJSS cannot stand spontaneous decisions and has a hard time adapting to sudden changes.

Sometimes it might be easy to forget that DJSS is most likely the smartest member of NSR as a whole, specifically because of the way he acts and presents himself typically - even if he makes a point of constantly reminding others of his intellect and academic achievements. But! Nothing escapes DJSS' keen vision.

Out of other members of NSR, Tatiana trusts DJSS the most to keep up with his responsibilities as charter and many other projects benefitial for the company, like the rocket launch! He's proven time and time again that he's more than competent to be left to his own devices. Even if he doesn't care much for the other megastars, he still shows up on time for meetings and speaks his mind on things that need addressing (that he considers worth addressing, at least), never pulling his punches when offering his opinion.

Literally that kind of annoying coworker that loves to nitpick and someone you don't get along with but who makes the best points and arguments ever.

I like to think this is reflected in his position in Vinyl City - he's the furthest away from the NSR Tower, because he requires little to no supersion at all. He's also closest to the heart of Vinyl City: Festival Plaza and the Grand Qwasa, maybe because he can absolutely take care of any problems that might arise with it.

Even if he's extremely dismissive, DJSS does remember the people he works with - mostly based on their skills and how useful they are, just so he can know who to send away and who to keep around. He doesn't remember your name, but he remembers that you're competent enough to do a quick check on his turntables or other equipment. That sort of thing.

DJSS likes when things go his way, the way he expects things to be, the way he planned them out to be. He thinks of every possible outcome and prepares for it, without going overboard as to hinder his progress. So he can live with someone on his team messing up the rocket launch procedure - because that was already something he expected that would happen, even if he throws a little fit about it. But he can't deal with suddenly being told that someone else will handle the rocket launch entirely - because that's just not a possibility in his mind.

I can see DJSS being a fan of to-do lists or spreadsheets to stay on top of his game. He doesn't need them, he remembers everything he needs to, but hey, it's a fun flex!

I also just remembered one of the interactable things in Cast Tech - a drone that Zuke comments on, saying:

 "It must have crashed from all the conflicting signals. DJ Subatomic Supernova really likes the idea of blasting his signal into space..."

Which makes me think that yes, DJSS is great at solving things, he's careful and meticulous, doing anything to ensure his success in whatever he sets out to do - but his tunnel vision makes him careless enough to overlook some of the most obvious things in the world. Like how blasting his own signal might disrupt every other drone in the city or mess with other machines.

And this whole point is totally not me subtly trying to write DJSS in a way that compliments the way I perceive Neon J because I think the ship is fun and their dynamic is even funnier, absoluTELY NOT LETS MOVE ON

Cast Tech is the most academic district in Vinyl City. Basically paradise for nerds.

The same way Eve supports the arts in Dream Fever by having a lot of galleries and art studios, it makes sense that DJSS would support academic endeavors by having schools and other academic institutions, funding people's research and etc. It's another little thing that ties in with his background as a teacher.

In-game, Cast Tech is basically a short main road with two or three paths that lead to small areas. It's very lackluster compared to the rest of districts and I blame that on the way the game is structured, showing the boss first and then the district - plus the fact that DJSS is the tutorial boss so by proxy, he gets less content. But it's serviceable enough for the main plot in the game, which is to show us that NSR can be superficial, shallow and careless company.

And I'd like to argue that, maybe, the area Mayday and Zuke go through within Cast Tech, is not meant to be representative of the entire district. It feels more like an area meant for tourists or general NSR propaganda that ended up flopping massively because people weren't that interested?

DJSS is a megastar, sure, but he's not shown being that much of a public figure outside of advertisement. Compare him to any other member - Sayu and 1010's popularity rely on their fanbase, because they're public figures. Eve is an artist, we also see her dabble in all types of art, not just music, even fashion! Yinu is a literal child, but she's still in advertisements for healthy food and drinks.

Did you notice how Cast Tech and Club Planetarium are the only places that lack NPCs? Unique NPCs to be more exact, like Celine in Dream Fever, Mia in Festival Plaza, Yiruk in Metro Division, etc. People who most likely live there?

Once again, DJSS is an outlier. It makes sense to me that, even though this area has a statue of him and a store selling products based on him, literally just revolving around him, playing his advertisements and etc it's not... That important overall within his district. Even the Planetarium where he hosts concerts has a bunch of small stores outside, nothing grand. Even though it's HIS district, he's NOT the focus, ironically.

I would love to get into details about how the actual district works and what goes around, but I dropped out of my bachelor's degree and I don't know enough about science to get super in-depth about it! So anyone who DOES know or wants to develop this more, feel free!

Oh Sayu, my beloved <3

The Best Virtual Idol and The Reason I bought this game in the first place!

Her music and style of battle was the most fun and dancy! I still vibe to it to this day-

Sooo many references to Internet Culture and Digital Art fills my heart with warmth and gives me determination just like her song itself as well!

Funny Useless Fact: She is the only boss I've beaten on Rank B on my first blind playthrough!

2. DK West

He's OUR MAN, He's THE BEST!

My second favorite and at the same time the hardest for me to beat.

I personally didn't adore RAP genre at first and never seen anyone preform it as an actual entertaining battle until he showed up...

3. Yinu

Oh, sweet child...

I love Yinu and her theme lots even if I'm not that big of a fan of Classical Music. And her backstory...Gosh! It made me cry a lot.

And I'm still feel ashamed of breaking the piano ;;-;;

Love the pace of how music goes with the fight and it feels even better when you get into actual rhythm. There were issues that gladly wore off thanks to practice and fighting this boss over and over.

Tho those slamming cords haunt me whenever I listen to the song off-battle-

Funny Useless Fact: I didn't like her Mother at first but when I read more about her and relationship with Yinu my opinion completely changed. And this is why I would nominate No Straight Roads for The Best Storytelling and Character Design.

4. EVE

Two-faced, tall woman.

Used to be one of my favorites but due to some circumstances I can't look at her the same way I used to but I still adore her as a boss!

I honestly love her style of the fight and music that changes depending on who you play.

Tho fighting her is literally like eating a lemon but eventually you kinda just accept your fate and roll with weird artistic antics happening around you.

And EVE herself as a character is so fascinating. Like this is the moment where I started to see that these aren't just bosses, they are actually characters that tie this little but complex story together bit by bit. And this is why I would nominate No Straight Roads for The Best Storytelling and Character Design AGAIN!

Funny Useless Fact: EVE was supposed to be a next character to have a complete and detailed art of but due to my forgetfulness, difficulties with her design (and many other things) - it was never finished but I hope to get that dusty sketch out of WIP folder someday.

5. Tatiana

The Bitch. The Boss.

I don't really like her music and rhythm but I can forgive that since it is kind of fitting for conflict between her and the BBJ.

She tries to hide her true image throughout the story and the fight but ultimately crumbles cause escaping from the past isn't the best option to improve.

I love her design and personality and I wish there were more villains like her. Strict, simple, stoic and yet well-written.

Funny Useless Fact: I've never drawn Tatiana until NSR announced their release on Steam with addition of Fanat Graffiti Contest that I certainly didn't want to miss out on. It was difficult but I did it and ngl, I am still proud of the results.

6. DJ Subatomic Supernova & 1010/Neon J

I can't really say anything much about both of them. Sorry, guys...

Their designs and personalities are fun and well-made but due to one of them being the first you fight as "tutorial" and the other appears only at the end of a fight. (1010 band doesn't count as an actual boss to me more like a part of it) They didn't struck me much as the others did...

I will say this thou: their backstories are interesting. One is an academy astrology teacher with a goal of achieving the stars and other is a war veteran who just wanted everyone to live in peace and he himself despite everything never stopped his passion for doll-making and making people happy.

Just simply, beautiful...

Hi sweetheart! It warms my heart so much to hear that you love it, thank you so much😭

I work on each design a lot and I’m very very very excited to share some more info about them!

For now, I’ve posted only three designs and I don’t want to spoiler other members of the crew just yet, but I’ll update this post or make extra for each of the next characters that will be introduced !

I have to state one important thing:

All the genres that the characters are presenting were popular or were even created either in the early or late 70s

Julie and Frank are representing the late 70s genres, but it’s a much more important fact for Frank

He became a NSR charter way earlier than Julie. Furthermore, Frank was one of the judges on Julie’s first NSR audition

If we’ll make parallels with our world’s music history, the fact that his genre appeared in the moment when it probably wouldn’t exist in the exact kind of way Frank presented it, is the exact reason why he refreshed peoples view on music so much

The gray strands of hair, white contours in his design and the yellow butterfly are a huge tribute to Andy Warhol, who was the founder of the group "The velvet underground". This group partly belongs to the New Wave direction, but it mainly inspired me with the philosophy and the viewpoint on art that Andy Warhol had

That’s the first version of his design, I didn‘t change it much but still it didn‘t feel right and i was very upset about that:

The one, THE ONLY, WITH WHOM I HAD NO IDEA WHAT TO DO BECAUSE I HAD TOO MUCH IDEAS… I was very concerned about saving details from Julie’s original design because I wanted to keep the charm of the canonical character

Julie’s design has some details that are inspired by Donna Summer, who gave a start to the genre Julie performs.

The main thing is that without the jacket her top quite literally blooms like a flower, the jacket just hold it while she’s rollerskating

She takes off the jacket when she’s wandering or playing around her "castle"

I can’t help but also show the first drafts of her design. The skirt is my favourite even after I’ve made the final decision different bc the way how fluffy it is would be a little unpractical 😭

Aaand the last, but not the least is Wally!

Honestly, his design is not as complex as the others. Mainly his design is based of disco fashion trends in the 70s that were portrayed in magazines or movies, and it doesn’t say much about his character. It shouldn’t though, as even in Welcome home there isn’t much information about him, but still he makes an impression of a kind, even comforting person. But when he’ll appear in the story of this AU for the second time, I’ll probably make his design more complex (Not saying he’ll be completely redesigned, but I’ll definitely think of other options of how he would look)

Oh! And also the red jacket he is wearing is the only jacket of his that isn’t stained with paint. He wears this particular one only on special events or auditions, because his friends made it for him and he will actually be freaking out if anything happens with this jacket

while I was overanalyzing the Infinite Hole ending, I accidentally thought of another Lovebug headcanon + potential scenario :D

(This is Lovebug!Stanley now btw)

Imagine this. Imagine the Lovebug Virus having boundaries coded in. Like, at first, it'll be everything at once — affectionate, gift-giving, flirty, yk, literally everything — but as time moves on, the virus will begin to "learn" and block out certain parts of its code (aka, it'll turn off some of its features. Like, physical affection, for example).

Now imagine this in an AU where The Narrator completely fell head-over-heels for Stanley.

But get this — he's ashamed of it. Not because of some internal h_m_ph_bia, but because he feels horrible for the amount of times he's had to go against Stanley when it comes to the myriad of endings. Why would Stanley love him back, he wondered. How could Stanley feel the same way?

So he painfully accepts that Stanley will never feel the same way.

Now imagine LB!Stanley being touchy and affectionate.

Imagine him saying "I love you."

But it's the virus that's making him say that.

It's the virus that's making him love The Narrator.

And he knows. The Narrator knows and he hates it.

He hates how the virus just gives him hope when he knows his feelings will never be reciprocated.

And in the end, he demands for the virus to stop giving him hope.

He demands for the virus to stop loving him.

..and it counts as a boundary.

It counts as a boundary. The virus can make itself stop loving The Narrator.

But in the cost of eliminating Stanley's own love for him.

🌤️Share your favorite mechanic from a game you’re working on.

So @ostrichmonkey-games and I have been working on [a yet unnamed space pirates! game], which we're designing in the more narrative OSR space (discussing my understanding of OSR/NSR/etc is a whole other thing but anyway). Suffice to say we're having a lot of fun working out the machinery of emergent narratives! I wanted to create a way for the space pirates to be able to assert some control over how the exploration procedure, or basically how the crew travels the void tides. But I wanted to keep to the grungy-spooky-cool vibes Josh and I were aiming for. Also, I wanted to draw inspiration from one of Josh's cool little tool kits: Distant, Cold, and Beautiful.

We still need to playtest this a bunch but I'm happy with what I've wrangled together and Josh helped me work out the details. I had a lot of fun running a few simple tests between us too!

I'll run us through some excerpts, if you'll indulge me!

Ritual of Desire

When you wish to do more than follow the whims of the tides and instead wish to make demands of the Void instead, it is then time to perform the Ritual of Desire

The Ritual of Desire directly interacts with your crew position, one of the building components of your space pirate. So let's take a look at the Black Terror described as:

You may die with the Void filling your veins and pouring from your eyes, but until then your hair grows long and black with the Void and your voice will break any heart.

The leading space pirate has to spend a Whisper of the Void, and all pirates must sacrifice one Hit to the ritual. This grants a starting 1d20 to the ritual. Here are the Whispers from the Black Terror section:

A drunken story spun between two old hags

A blackened skull small enough to fit in the palm

A vision of a tentacled star beast consuming a station

Additional dice depends on what the Black Terror offers to the Ritual of Desire (different crew positions grant different dice, for different narrative costs):

1d12 - Burn away a love that keeps you steady

3d6 - Receive a fear deserved and compelling

So every space pirate makes the makes their offer for the dice for the ritual. So what do you do with all that dice once you've collected them? You cast them and seek out any of the following patterns:

The Twin Daggers of Levi - A pair of dice that show the same number (Reroll any of the Exploration die once, taking any result)

The Footsteps of Drowned Jack - Two sequential numbers (Mark a second location on the map)

The Three Sisters of Dreams Past - Three dice that show the same number (Move the results of the Exploration Die by one level)

The Four Star Crossed Lovers - Anything more than four dice showing the same number (Increase the tier of the results)

The Sea Wolf Howl - At least three dice of sequential numbers (Change the results of the Exploration Die to another type within the same tier)

The Path of Prophecy - At least four dice of sequential numbers  (portal to the desire or something similar)

The God-Siblings of Chaos - If no patterns appear at all, declare exactly where you want to go. You will receive a request from the God-Siblings, and it must be fulfilled before the end of the next session. Once fulfilled, your ship and crew will be taken directly to your heart’s desire. Shirk the responsibility, and the Star-Killers will hunt you down.

And laaaaastly, I wanted to somehow incorporate the idea of younger and older stars too from Distant, Cold, and Beautiful.

The stars know when they are being watched, the ancient skies will look back and observe in turn, drawn to the bright light of hubris. Should the hungry stars be moved to entangle their light with yours, prepare yourself.

If any of the final Ritual Die is a 1-9: The younger of the stars observe you and send out a Whisper of the Void.

If any of the final Ritual Die is a 10-15: The older of the stars wish to interact with you directly, the crew will soon meet a Void Stranger.

If any of the final Ritual Die is a 16-20: The hungry stars turn their baleful eyes on you. The Keeper unlocks a Sinister Unscene.

Basically I wanted to mimic the feeling of casting runes, charm casting, and similar ideas. I also wanted to experiment with blurring the lines between play and procedure, meta and narrative. But! Most important! it's all for fun, and rolling different dice is always fun.

and now in response to your reblog of my fatui kuni drabble, yes. fucking yes. sorry excuse my language BUT. I GET IT. dearest when i tell you it's something i think about a lot — that drabble is actually what i wrote back when i was taking a walk near the seashore about i believe two weeks ago! but that aside, walks around snezhnaya with scara are like everything to me. like imagine him accompanying you to town or along the outskirts — very and i mean very attentively listens to you musings about everything and nothing because he doesn't have much to offer in comparison to what he wholeheartedly believes to be heaven in your eyes as you talk about very simple things ( i shall cut my rambling there because i have a whole series for fatui kuni that is primarily themed around that concept hehe ).

no but this bitch had me on a chokehold for SO LONG, that i ended up writing not only lore but many, many other things as well from the small to the big deadass ended up being a presentation because i have arranged a design sheet and even chose a fucking theme for him. but king deserves it so (⁠~⁠￣⁠³⁠￣⁠)⁠~

there is so much i could say right now, so much i can express but bloody hell i like, can't because i have successfully melted into a puddle out of sheer joy :')

Him being a silent listener is so so cute and real because you think he doesn't listen but then he brings up something random you said weeks ago and your heart just goes boom. (I propose to you now, you and Wanderer visiting Mondstadt/ Dragonspine and walking along the snowy path there too! Wanderer just has so much overflowing memories of the two of you doing the same thing in Snezhnaya, but you don't remember :( but at least he has a second chance with you to make new memories)
