ok so stupid beginners independent journo/writer questions... go if i have an idea for a pice i wanna pitch to some magazines, how do i like go about that? do i just sketch out my ideas for it or can i like already write it? and if the latter how well pre-edited does it already need to be? and ! is there anything important i should keep in mind when writing pitch emails? i have no idea how to do any of this but i have some stuff i wanna publish elsewhere and collect some bylines and where i think a different audience than the one on my website blog would be cool.

Would you ever release signed copies of Don't Shoot the Messenger?

the short answer is: yes, i'd love to do signed copies of 'Don't Shoot the Messenger'!

the long answer is: logistics are hard lol. in order for me to hav copies to sign, i'd hav to order author copies from amazon (paying for them in advance personally), sign them, and then mail them to ppl myself. this is definitely doable, but the mechanism for selling since it wouldn't b through amazon itself and actually collecting payment/mailing info would hav to be worked out.

a vague plan that i hav in mind now would be either to just do a limited run where people can essentially pre-order paperbacks via not amazon for lik a month that they were available and then i'd know how much to get and sign etc. i dont hav a patreon so i think i would try to do it through kofi where if u pay a set amount and say its for a signed copy i would then be able to send a signed book to u, after i messaged back for your address to mail it. this would obviously only work small scale but would likely more than suffice for now.

or if i decide to add a hardcover version, i could offer signed hardcovers as a promotion for a similar limited time and via a similar process as above. i'll probably do a poll at some point to see if anyone would even want a hardcover. same for dale

when will i hav the time to look deeper into all this and put it in action? no idea. life's been extremely busy, but its definitely been on my radar and i will try to make it happen in the next coming years.

i suppose if i ever did some sort of in-person book/author event after Dale is out, i might be able to offer signed books in person, but that'd likely b hard to reach for most ppl lol

until then, only one person has a signed copy - one of my beta readers who i thanked in my acknowledgements for being so wonderfully supportive!

Hi! In case it's of interest, my copy of the zine went to a town established in 1668 and is bordered by Canada, separated only by a shipping channel. Our closest movie theater is literally in Canada, haha. Just thought you'd be interested to know that your zine made it so far north in the USA it's practically Canada, to a place thats older than the USA. Idk if this will be interesting but I wanted to share!

hello :) first of all you really don't have to answer or acknowledge this since it'll maybe stir this whole thing up even more, but i guess i just wanted to talk about this with someone who feels as passionate about it as i do. there's this very famous writer in the TLOU fandom and the way they portray ellie's character and especially her trauma just IRKS me so bad. it's so obvious they have no idea how PSTD works. at first i was like, ok, don't like don't read, i truly get it and agree, but when you write about such a sensitive topic i feel like you have to take responsability? the don't like it don't read it rule doesn't apply here since A LOT of people are reading your works and there's a possibility that their knowledge of PSTD will be flawed bc of the way YOU wrote it. and ellie's character... like, how much can you change a character's personality before it's another whole person? i just don't understand the point. again, no need to reply! just wanted to talk about this w/ someone (a writer, no less) who gets it

I'm glad you felt safe enough to send this ask, and I 100% understand where you are coming from. I won't go into the drama because Ellis made his post and I was only watching it from the sidelines because he is my friend; this is done for him so it's done for me.

I do wanna say something on the matter of "don't like don't read" and author responsibility because as everyone who follows me probably knows at this point, I care about accurately writing PTSD and trauma (and any other conditions for that matter), and I have made several posts about it before. This is not about one person, this is about a trend I have see both in this fandom and in other ones, so once again, as always, if you start feeling defensive ask yourself why and have a good look at that.

I want to make something very very clear: people critizing a person's portrayal of a character's trauma and PTSD is NOT about headcanons. It is not about creative freedom. It is not about character interpretation. It never has been and it never will be. It is about accurately portraying actual medical conditions in a way that is both respectful and does not contribute to ableism and stigma.

If your portrayal misses the mark, people critizicing it are not criticzing your headcanons. They are telling you that something you wrote is legitimately offensive and harms actual, real people with that condition. There is exactly one correct response to that and it's apologizing, correcting your mistakes and/or taking the work down if you cannot do so for some reason (too deeply enmeshed with the story, you cannot write it properly, etc.). Saying "don't like don't read" and ignoring it doesn't suddenly make your work not offensive, it just makes YOU a bigot who does not care that they are hurting people.

"Don't like don't read" is about fics that do not meet your personal taste or deal with topics you cannot handle. It does not apply to offensive, harmful content. Would you say the same if someone published an outright transphobic or racist fanfic? Would you say "don't like don't read" and allow them to continue to post outright bigotry without repercussions? And if your answer to this is no, as I hope it is, why is it different when it comes to ableism? Why do you think mental disorders and conditions are somehow less worthy of being portrayed correctly? Why is ableism "less bad" to you?

And anon, you bring up a great point, as an author you not only have a responsibility to make sure that your portrayal isn't hurting people who have it but that it also doesn't contribute to negative stereotypes and furthers the stigma. If a person who does not have PTSD reads it and comes out the other side with an even more flawed view of it, you failed. You failed as an author and as an ally to disabled people.

Write Ellie however you want, but once you get to a certain point at least tag it as "out of character" so people can avoid it. It's not a bad thing to write ooc characters, if you are having fun - go for it! Just tag it as such so people can avoid it. Wrongly portrayed PTSD does not fall under headcanons though, it's a problem and you need to fix it. You need to do more research than one google search. Having a friend with PTSD is also not enough, you need the full picture, you need to understand how PTSD works and why people's symptoms are the way they are.

I have CPTSD, I have enough trauma for several lifetimes, I have several other diagnosed conditions and I'm on heavy psych medications and I still do my research. I draw from my own experienced a lot but I also have years of research under my belt and I still do more. Because I care. I care about my writing and my stories, I care about the characters and the people who see themselves in them, I care about my readers and everyone else who will be (hopefully positively) affected by the education I can provide via my writing. I care and that means putting in the work isn't a chore, I do it willingly and with enthusiasm.

If someone tells me I fucked something up - thank you, I will change it, apologize, and learn from it. That is the only correct response and I hope people will start doing so instead of twisting words and hiding behind "don't like don't read" because it has never been about interpretation and never will be.

Teto x Teto is uncontroversial because selfcest (shipping a character with themself) isn't real or abusive; it doesn't hurt the characters themselves and it doesn't hurt people in real life. It's different from "incest", which is bad because of abuse and power dynamics and all kinds of problems, because selfcest is literally the idea of "shipping yourself with yourself". In other words, it's almost like "repackaged self-love", because it's you. It's literally you. It's not a different person-- it's you, and I don't really see a problem with loving yourself. I think more people should love themself, so I find all the Teto x Teto art I find on Twitter rather cute. People were shipping the different versions of Pokemon Miku with each other too, and I found that cute too. It's totally fine if it's not your thing, but instead of having me explain why it's uncontroversial and harmless fun, I'm curious what makes it controversial? Selfcest can't even really happen in real life, so this is also one of the few things that are truly confined to fiction and thus have no way of normalizing something "problematic", unlike promoting something like incest.

To get into it further, I've been seeing fanart of people shipping "Liar Dancer" Teto with "Ultra" Teto. In a way, that's selfshipping/selfcest too because they're both Teto, but they're Teto's from different songs and could thus be seen as "AU" Teto's. I have no idea why people ship them tbh but it's like shipping yourself with an AU you. Both of them are you but both "you"s are also different enough to make it into a two-person relationship (instead of a one-person one) in case you think it's better like that. Idk. I'm reminded of all the Sans x Sans shipping... Like, I just checked AO3 randomly and there are almost 10k works tagged with that pairing...

I know appealing to the masses isn't a moral argument, so that's not why I'm bringing that up. I'm just bringing up a famous "selfshipping" example because it really highlights the pure fiction/fun/entertainment of it: people made all the AU Sans Undertale charas by themselves and shipped them with each other and made fanfiction/fanart for fun. AU Sans such as "edgy Sans" or "swap Sans" don't even exist in the original canon, but people made them for fun. In the same way, Teto's existence as a voice synthesizer allows for interpretation (her creators literally encourage it), so I didn't have to make two Teto's, one UTAU and one SynthV. You can also treat Teto as one person, who started in UTAU but then moved on/switched to SynthV. In fact, in some ideas I have, I do want to treat them as the "same person" who grew up/changed her style, so yeah: this is 100% fiction. 1000% fiction.

I like separating them as different charas 'cuz I saw other people do it and I adore the idea (since they're Teto's from different software and I do separate them in my head, personality-wise), but they're still Teto (the same girl) in the end. I know this is 100% in response to my latest fanart I made for fun, but I need to emphasize that I could address any concerns you have with the Teto x Teto love by literally reimagining them as the same chara instead of different ones. Since you see how literally fictional/manufactured/fabricated it is (since this is just a fun way I like to imagine them and it's not canon at all, plus I clarify that I don't ship anything problematic), then I hope you see how harmless it is and how it's purely for entertainment value.

I write a lot 'cuz I don't know from which angle you're coming at me with, but the whole "sisters" thing is also a made-up thing I like for fun. I put quotes because if I ever like Teto x Teto stuff, then I don't imagine them as sisters-- I hope that's obvious... Teto x Teto stuff isn't like shipping sisters: it's like shipping yourself with yourself/loving yourself. (A different version of yourself.) That's the main thing that differentiates it from weird stuff like incest, so I hope that part's been properly conveyed; I'll say it as many times as it needs to be said...

I'm a small blog and I like things that don't hurt anyone and that I think are cute, so when I saw an ask like this, I got really surprised. I can't tell if you're asking me in good faith or if you're actually mad at me and take issue with me liking something that's 100% fiction. I know weirdos use that line to justify liking actual harmful stuff that normalizes harmful ideas, but selfshipping is actually one of the least "able to happen in real life" things out there, so I really hope you're not out to get me and I'm just being cautiously defensive for the sake of it. 😭 The closest thing to selfshipping happening irl is someone literally cloning me and we're born at the same time in the same environments and everything, but the moment the other "me" grows up, it's hard to argue if they're actually "me" because we're distinct individuals with distinct thoughts, memories, experiences, etc., even if you try to control for all of that. The second closest thing to selfcest happening irl is a portal opening up irl and another me stepping into my current world, but just because I like Teto x Teto selfshipping doesn't mean I have to like it all the time/for myself too. 😅 Just like with everything, I have standards that I like to apply when it comes to what I like in fiction and what I like in real life, so there really isn't a real life equivalent that explains why Teto x Teto might be controversial... I suspect it's the whole "related by blood" (as they're the same person) and "incest" comparison, but it's literally different.

Selfshipping is one of the purest "I'm doing what I want and not hurting anyone" ideas, so I'm surprised you asked about that instead of claiming that Miku x Teto is proship (it's not; I imagine them as similar ages).

I wrote some stuff about how I imagine SynthV Teto and UTAU Teto and how they're wholesome and cute and I prefer Miku x Teto anyway so it's more like they like the same person, but I dunno how much you care about my headcanons and when I hit CTRL + Z, that paragraph kinda got deleted, so whoops.

I'm not into spreading negativity or discourse, so if you engage with me in good faith, then I'll do the same, but all in all, if you don't like it, that's totally fine and valid. I like it though, and that's fine and valid too. If you have beef with me for liking it, I hope you just block or avoid me because I hate feeling like I have to walk on eggshells around someone and I've already explained why what I like is uncontroversial, so please don't try to "moralize" me away from something that I like for fun and that brings me joy. I'm not the only Teto x Teto liker so idk if you've sent this ask to other people too; I genuinely hope you're not harassing people over their ship tastes (esp if it's something as small/fake as selfshipping), but if this is a genuine question, then I hope my answer helps explain it!

I've always adopted an "as long as this isn't hurting anyone" mentality, and selfshipping is like one of the purest things ever, like self-love. Again, I'm a Mktt lover all the way, but if any part of my response sounds defensive, then it's because I'm already on-guard about people possibly trashing my interests 'cuz they think I like weird stuff when I literally don't. (Mktt's existence alone.)

Sorry I wasn't being clear when I said "mirror terf"--it's not a thing anyone says. I meant it as an allusion to, like, "mirror-verse" style stories. As in, terfs think transfems are men and hate both men and penises, and the two banners together felt like it could be someone who would think transfems are men but loves men and penises. It wasn't my best writing choice, so I hope that clarifies what I meant

Same asker as before, and you know what? I think I've just let terfs get too under my skin. The banners say that you love men and love cock and one can assume the combination of the two, and that doesn't say anything about men without cocks or an inherent man-ness of penis. Sorry for the trouble.

thank you for clarifying, i really appreciate it ! that does clear up the stuff i was confused about. one of the many other anons suggested the addition of a trans related banner, which is increasingly sounding like a reasonable way to at least imply that a cissexist reading is incorrect. like, i don't really like the concept of other trans people reading one of my posts and getting the knee-jerk reaction of 'this feels like a terf but to the left' or something, and thank you for bringing it to my attention that you were, because that matters to me. so if seeing the trans symbols makes it more clear that im talking about all men (regardless of what they're packing) and not people who don't identify as men, then that would be a good solution to me, if it also sounds good to you and any other trans people, especially if they were originally put off by the banners.
