fyi tumblr is fucking over people with custom domains

if you have a custom domain set, DO NOT UNTICK THE BUTTON on blog settings. you’re not allowed to add it back. (nope, that’s not mentioned anywhere on blog settings itself.) if you switch hosts and need to update nameservers, congrats! you’re fucked

custom domains were a feature that’s been available over a decade, but they’ve been unceremoniously removed. the idea of “legacy” domains is a joke

this is doubly egregious because they absolutely could be selling domains for people that don’t have one, while still allowing those of us that already had a domain to keep using ours. they also don’t even allow you to pay to use your own. so if someone bought a domain specifically to use on tumblr, if they accidentally untick the button then poof! they’re fucked because they can’t re-buy their own domain from tumblr 

it’s honestly pathetic how much of a transparent cash grab this is at worst, and how badly implemented this was at best. this is what happens when you accept incompetency as a modus operandi bc “lol quirky hellsite”

i highly, HIGHLY recommend not investing in this feature due to that incompetency and lack of transparency

AIRPORT CLUES. 🕵️‍♀️ ( i’m labeling it as this instead of actual cpn cause most of these are speculation & imagination. lol. but some of these may be relevant at some point. who knows. )

I personally think these bits don’t hold that much weight, but who am I to judge? I’ve been here for years and there are things that I ignored but turned into big cpns— days, months or years later. so i will just archive it here for safe keeping. lol.

What XZ is doing in Shanghai is still not known. It’s still melons that he will go to film overseas or will he stay in SH to do work cause most of his days are him shooting LOCH. Whatever it is, XZ and his team wants people to know that he is in Shanghai. We know that XZ can go incognito if he wants too, so the fact that he goes out dressed in Tod’s ( coat, shows and bag ) says something. He wants to be seen. He even shared a selfie.

So anyway… let’s start with his jeans…

The way he is wearing wide legged pants, similar to what WYB did during IQIYI scream night. That’s actually the first thing I noticed. 👀👀👀

I read somewhere that this is apparently something trendy nowadays so maybe it’s not just them. But it is nice seeing them wearing something of the same style days from each other. Tho XZ also wore something kinda similar in his GUCCI horseshoe campaign ; maybe it could be inspired from that too?

I see some folks says that some 🍤🍤🍤 were apparently bashing WYB for wearing that kind of jeans @ IQIYI but then XZ shows up in public with the same style. I also don’t see any wardrobe account tagging the jeans. why tho. does no one really know? What if it’s Chanel? LOL! I doubt it.

There is conversation about the difference between their clothes going to the airport. WYB was wearing very light clothing and XZ was bundled up. It’s like him following WYB’s reminder that the weather is cooling down and YBo saying to wear more clothes.

He was also holding a new phone, iphone 15 pro but he is still using a phone case with a card pocket ( this is a very famous cpn. I feel like at this point, most bxgs should know what the cpn is around this phone case ). And this too, idk what is the significance but in case. He’s such an apple fanboy 😂😂😂

I didn’t expect him to share it lol. You can say that maybe—

1. He wants to share a selfie to fans cause his airport video and him going to SH went on weibo hot search.

A key thing here is it was taken much earlier than it was posted. Which is not really suspicious if you think about it. Not everyone posts selfies in real time. However, it’s a common CPN among turtles that most of the time what we get are leftovers. Meaning they take it for personal use or send it to each other. So this was allegedly taken along with other selfies to report to WYB. This is kinda believable knowing that they were both in BJ together but now XZ has to leave.

My favorite tho is how this selfie kinda echoes WYB’s. You can’t see his face. Thank you for letting us see his eyes tho 🥹🥹🥹

Tagging @syscurse with this cause they seem to have more awareness of the final fusion "discourse" and I dont have a thesis statement or any real argument here beyond just casual discussion nor do I know if Im "strawmanning" cause I havent actually seen much of it since M&M's final fusion backlash (+ Im not trying to argue, just share thoughts)

But the common line of "Final Fusion isnt even worth it / isnt even good because you can always resplit" and what not is honestly fucked up and problematic to say in regards to a healing method but on a personal level didnt so much have anything to compare it to in order to highlight it

But as someone who has been working with OCD longer than DID and final fusion, its kind of like saying "Trying to resist / be free from doing your compulsions isn't even worth it because you can always get new compulsions or relapse, even if you free yourself from all the ones you have now, its not like itll stay that way"

Cause - and Im not sure how many chronic long term OCD folks are out there - but for cases like mine where its "high functioning" (ie constant but due to how its done it doesnt impact my day to day as much as it should) and long long long deeply rooted and untreated, a valid settling place for healing is to just integrate and adjust the compulsions to be less intrusive and focus on navigating obsessions and intrusive thoughts better

For some it might just not be worth the time and effort to actually fully stop all the compulsions entirely because - in our case - there are too many, its too deeply rooted in trauma and other disorders, and so reinforced that to do so would be a SHIT ton of work whereas usually we actually are pretty functioning

So if we were to put the community aspect the DID community has onto the OCD "community" then one could say there is "full remission" and "functional OCD" as recovery goals.

And as someone whose happily settled in functional OCD and currently really isnt seeking out full remission (as that would probably be after final fusion) its completely valid to say "Im happy with this level".

Much like DID and splitting though, the OCD brain even after healing is still a brain physically wired in an OCD way and inevitably you are always going to be prone to developing obsessions and compulsions. Does that mean working on freeing yourself from the ones you currently have is pointless? ABSOLUTELY NOT.

Even if you have two weeks, two months, two years, twenty years, forty years and then "relapse" or whatever it is and end up gaining new obsessions / compulsions or splitting a new alter, obtaining that period of ideal and desired healing is an amazing thing.

Healing has ups and downs and works like a tide for almost every disorder and every version of healing. Its not a special thing about DID or final fusion, heck the claim could be made with functional multiplicity and dissociative symptoms and barriers coming back

Idk man, Im mostly rambling thoughts but TLDR healing is a rollercoaster, sometimes its a Disneyland ride sometimes its Six Flags, but there are ups and downs regardless of the disorder and version of healing for an individual and I really think its a bit of a negative nancy and a thought coming from a place of not understanding later stages of healing from people not quite there yet

Okay, yes. Here's how I see it

Ace had been considered a delinquent since he was young, he bounced through foster homes full of people who thought they could "fix him" but it didn't take much time for him to be deemed "a problem child". As soon as he was old enough, he was registered in the system with vandalism and petty theft. It was always penalized with fines and social services. Coincidentally the time that he spent in the social services made him grow a sense for the injustice with which the common folk were treated with and the corruption in the government. And also coincidentally, it was while helping, perhaps in illegal ways or not, that he had his reunion with he long presumedly dead brother - Sabo. It was awkward as they almost got caught red-handed and Sabo didn't recognize him at first, but after they avoided the authorities, Ace tried his damnedest to jog Sabo's memory and eventually it worked. That's how Ace started helping a nonprofit (and non-public) organism they called the revolutionary army from time to time.

He never did anything too big or grand, but while doing what he could, he was spotted by a police officer that hated him more than most - Akainu. He was afraid that the police officer would report him, as most would, but things turned for the worse when he was ambushed and almost killed by him while he was trying to find out what the revolutionary army knew and who was their leader. He never had justice in mind, he wanted to know if they were aware of the government's deeds that Akainu helped cover up. Ace was thankfully saved after Whitebeard (his adoptive father) and others from his family worried that he had gone radio silent - they spread out through the city in search of him. (Ace often disappeared for days sometimes weeks, but he never ignored his family if they were trying to get ahold of him, he would always send them pictures of how he somehow ended up in the desert, or in japan, or just a quick excited message about him meeting Luffy at a hotdog eating competition or something)

Akainu found out that Ace's family is searching for him, so he shot him, hoping he would die on the spot (he didn't). First to run there was Luffy, he tried to tackle him, fight thw gun off of him and he would have managed to hit him enough times to tackle him to the floor (having the advantage of the element of surprise), but Akainu grabbed a knife he had on him and slashed at his chest enough times to make Luffy get dizzy with the loss of blood and pass out. When Whitebeard found them, Akainu had forsaken both weapons and tried taking them back as to both defend himself and not leave evidence. But he was too slow and Whitebeard started mauling Akainu. He heard his son groaning in pain, realizing they weren't dead and his grief was too heavy to bear, letting the policeman run away in favour of calling an ambulance and mourning his sons who were barely holding on. None of them thought that any of them would survive, but they did.

Many lawsuits, lying witnesses and fake evidence later, it was ruled as self defense in favor of Ace, but there were other repercussions since he was a previously convicted man and had a record with the law (idk how the judicial system works well enough to say what it would be but pretend that I described it well enough ig)

MAJOR tw for SA

If I had Tim come out as an SA survivor during SAAM (April), would that... idk, like,

Be supported? I know it's, a tough topic to handle, and rarely do writers handle it well, but I myself am an SA survivor, and I think it's a special part of Tim's story that I refuse to downplay or minimize (even with the seeming innocuousness of his assaults) (another note: I refuse to demonize the ladies who have enacted assault on him, but likewise I also refuse to pretend that it didn't happen), but I feel like a lot of fandom tends to minimalize it bc they don't seem to know much about SA (particularly, I see a lot of jokes made about Tim's experiences (yes plural) that don't seem to be treated properly by canon or fans, and I think I, as an SA victim, could do it justice).

That said, I feel like I'd be the only one talking about it on the dash, and it might be either too much for some folks (absolutely valid), or it might seem like others don't feel that it's their place to get involved (also a valid feeling!)

But for me, at least, me personally, I think that raising awareness is more important than anything else, and so even if someone doesn't handle it 10,000% above and beyond perfecter than perfect, I still think it would be valuable to have Tim interact with others who hear his story. So.

Idk. There's many, many months in advance that I have to mull this over, so there isn't a rush, but what do y'all think? Anyone who sees this post is welcome to interact. Serious answer though, probably it's just a crush, because not only did it end the misery I put my readers through (it's a slow, slow, slow burn, folks), but I think it's the only one of my fics that ends with a proposal (I think. I've written 40 of them, you can't expect me to remember them all, can you?)

Yep, every time @mrsbsmooth reads one of my unfinished drafts and gets mad that it's not finished yet /j

What's a wip you want to finish but doubt you ever will?

Technically this is not applicable - I have every intention of finishing my 3 active WIPs (Whiskey & Wildflowers, Amelia Can't Win, and Luc & Hen's Sexcellent Kinkventure), and I prefer not to start new chaptered fics until I finish other ones (which often means my fics are in the idea stage for literally years before I even start writing them).

That said, I have a few chaptered fic ideas in various stages of production that I'm not sure I'll end up writing. idk if those count as WIPs (one of them is half-outlined and I've jotted down a few paragraphs, but I have to rework it)

What are your writing strengths?

Honestly, I'm not entirely sure. I've been told I'm good at pacing, and I've been told I'm good at angst - but what strengths make me good at those things are, I don't really know.

Oh, wait. Spelling, grammar, and punctuation. I rock at those.

What are your writing weaknesses?

Dialogue, for one. My biggest struggle in all of my fics (and what I find extremely daunting when starting something new) is dialogue. I never know what my characters should talk about when it's not distinctly plot-related, especially group scenes. Some people are so good at writing fresh dialogue that just breathes so much life into the characters and displays their personality and keeps the reader engaged, and that's something I'd love to do better (both in fics and in real life, tbh - I'm a wallflower)

Secondly, character development. I've literally written over 500k words for one of my OCs, yet I hardly know who she is outside of the villa. I know her struggles and much of her backstory, but I don't know what her hobbies are, what gets her up in the morning, what she likes to eat, what she listens to, etc. I think this also plays a part in my dialogue struggles - it's hard to write characters if I don't know them

Third, and related to number two, is character arcs/relationship arcs. Sure, I can come up with a storyline and write it in such a way that it's enjoyable. But what makes a story extra compelling is the character arcs, watching the characters grow and learn things about themselves and seeing how that meshes with another character and their flaws/strengths and it all comes together like puzzle pieces. I'm not good at that, but I want to be

tl;dr - my biggest weakness is that I'm not Emily Henry

Thoughts on dialogue in another language?

My favourite love interests are Swedish and Portuguese 🤣 and yes, I love having them slip into their native tongues every once in awhile, or use terms of endearments, etc. I try to be as accurate as possible and give the readers a glossary (though sometimes I'm lazy with that), but it's also usually just little things that you can kind of tell what they're saying from the context

PET PEEVES & DEALBREAKERS:

ignoring my rules and asking to ship with me when your character's name is not in my ship list (yes, this includes OCs. if OCs aren't mentioned it's very likely because my muse has a very specific romantic inclination and chemistry won't trump that the muse is already leaning toward someone/other people by default. should be obvious but I literally recently on another blog had someone completely ignore that muse's ship list and still send me an anon to ask to ship with me (and the whole thing was indicative that they only wanted to write with me to ship and didn't really see my muse as their own muse but just as another tool in the shed). my ship list tends to be very tiny for any muse and I prefer it that way anyway because it wards off the idea that people are only writing with me to ship. I love shipping with certain pairs, but I don't write explicitly for that and am much more comfortable with the idea that people aren't following me to ship with me/going into things assuming they will be able to convince me into it when they would have presumably read my rules and know their character is not on that list. again, as in my rules, one-sided your-muse-likes-mine is totally fine - just don't get mad when it remains one-sided because you were warned. if your muse is on the list (for any of my muses), yes, it means I'm open to discussing it/writing it./being receptive of it.

disrespecting other writers plain for everyone to see on their dashboards. this includes saying vague shit like "there are no good (character name) muses out there". that is very much not the same as "there are no writers for this character/I can't find any of this character". that's a very intentional dig at certain character writers and implies they're not good enough for you because nobody writes that character the way you want them to (versus simply expressing a desire to write with a certain character but not finding anyone who writes them).

using my muse as a blank slate who is just a base directly off the game you probably played if you're here. if any of you have paid attention to my threads with a specific Flynn (hi Natty!), you are probably aware my muse is heavily influenced by canon side material. that stuff is a core part of my muse. my muse is not just a rip taken right out of game-only canon. the more I write, the more formed he becomes as his own individual muse. if you cannot respect that and will consider it "ooc" for my muse not to be a blank slate direct rip from canon every time I write with a new muse, that's a hard dealbreaker. (on that above note, for any Flynn writers who are unfamiliar with the canon side material that Flynn is a primary part of (i.e. very directly relative to things that affect my muse), I do not hold that against you and am completely willing to work things out with you! that shit is hard to find and is JP media only. there's a slew of side content for Vesperia that the west never got so I know many if not most people won't even know a lot of it exists)

PLOTS OR MEMES: I do both, but I'm more likely to be able to work out plots with characters either in my muse's canon(s) or muses from other Tales games ("canons" is things such as canon side material, Tales gachas Yuri is in, etc). if I don't know your character well (canon or OC), memes tend to work better. I find it difficult to plot specific things out when I don't know a particular series well or at all. that said, I'll write with people who know my character and are okay with using one of his verses even if I don't know your character/series. I love memes for writing, but I will definitely struggle to actually plot if I don't know the franchise. I also love randomly sent memes just for the sake of writing things!

LONG REPLIES OR SHORT REPLIES: long. short for me is like three paragraphs and I just physically can't find myself doing less. things like one-liners might pop up in dash commentary and such, but for actual threads, I write long replies because that's what comes to me. sometimes motivation really hits me with muses my muse feels close to and you might end up with a ten+ paragraph reply, so uhhh... sorry about that in advance (and my paragraphs can get bulky so doubly sorry in advance!). typically this stuff happens in more emotion-driven threads though.

BEST TIME TO WRITE: NIGHT! NIGHT! NIGHT! I'm a night owl in general, but my writing energy tends to go yeehaw on me at night.

Primarily Marvel nowadays, specifically Doctor Strange (MCU)! But I've also consistently written for Danny Phantom, and also delved into Pokemon, Teen Titans, TMNT, Warriors Cats and Twilight back in the day... its a lot lol.

Golden Gate's Heroes - a Venom and Ant-Man/MCU crossover from before NWH/Venom 2. It has 2,238 kudos as of posting!

Probably has to be Stars Will Light the Way, tbh. Most of my fics are fairly "happy" tbh but so many are oneshots and anthologies, that this seems like the best pick.

Uhhhh.... hmmm.... its hard to say. I am very much a multishipper - I'll ship one guy with quite a few other characters if the dynamic could even conceivably work. But I also tend to prefer gen-fic or found family fics too...? But um. Uh. All-time favorite ship is probably Eddie/Venom. I will not elaborate further.

15. What’s the WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?

Gosh ok it's this Blue Beetle fic, with Jaime from the Young Justice cartoon swapping places with Jaime from the movie. I just... idk how I want to end it so it's been sitting on my laptop, mostly untouched since like. September or October of 2023. Whoops...

Idk lol, um... getting into the heads of the characters I write?? I've been told that I can capture certain characters really well, at least.  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I procrastinate on writing sometimes, and i'm terrible at planning fics out fully before i start them... so if I don't write scenes and ideas down, they're gone, and then I don't know what to write for my fic, and then the fic never gets finished 🙃

Eh, depends on the language - I took enough Spanish to be able to pull it off, I think, and I also have a few coworkers who speak Spanish fluently who will make sure I'm doing it right if/when I use it. Other than that, I'm not sure if I trust Google Translate enough to write dialogue in any other language...

Omg... apparently... it was a crossover between Danny Phantom and Warriors (the books about the cats)... I figured it would be Danny Phantom but that. That is hilarious to me. I really was a Warriors Cats kid....

It's gotta be Stars Will Light the Way. Idk man, it just... it may not be as popular as Golden Gate's Heroes, but it's currently the longest fic I've ever written and published and FINISHED, and im so proud of that. The fact that even 400+ people liked it enough to give it a kudos... I wrote that fic for me, so to know others liked it too means the world to me.

WHAT IS YOUR OTP FOR YOUR CHARACTER(S)?

I don't have very many active ships going on for Rex at a time So I don't have much of a pool to choose from for the title of one-true yet. I try to adore all my character interactions equally.

HOW LARGE DOES THE AGE GAP HAVE TO BE TO MAKE IT UNCOMFORTABLE?

I write mainverse Rex as being somewhere variably into his twenties, maybe mid-to-late most of the time, only shipping with other adults. At some point I think I set it for myself that after a 5+ year gap I tend to feel iffy, especially if Rex is implied to be the older one in the proposed ship. If Rex is actually the younger one in the ship I might be a little more lenient given his own age range. Have not had to deal with this yet though, most flirting/shipping isn't too far off.

HOW FAR DO STEAMY MOMENTS HAVE TO GO BEFORE THEY ARE CONSIDERED NSFW?

So I haven't written NSFW in ages, bad experiences in the past. But probably when descriptions of arousal or foreplay are extended/detailed. Not that shorter, snappier responses can't lead into that but when the bulk of the thread is concentrated on that, it's harder to segue into other stuff and ought to be carried over to sideblogs/readmores/etc.

ARE YOU SELECTIVE WHEN SHIPPING?

Yeah. I've gotten a lot more selective nowadays. Shoutout to everyone who specifies shipping with chemistry, who want to avoid being reduced to insta-NSFW fodder or an accessory for someone else's character plot/jokes/etc again. Folks deserve better.

WHO ARE OTHER CHARACTERS YOU SHIP YOUR CHARACTER WITH?

At the moment I for sure ended up shipping with @regensia's Perona from One Piece, and Rex has been pretty close with her other OC Armand. There's been some plotting bits with other muns/flirting between muses but still tentative (mostly with @beatgod's various ocs).

I personally have a half-joking (now half-serious) oc x canon ship for Rex with Bridgette Hashima from Close Enough that started out as them being a dysfunctional version of Lois Lane and Superman but ended up being really sweet once I compared as much as contrasted. Idk I just like to think that as much as they bicker, they'd also treat each other as equals, flaws on the table and seeing the best in each other.

DOES ONE HAVE TO ASK TO SHIP WITH YOU?

Yeah, this goes with the selectivity. Characters can express interest but if you want to take that a step further maybe let's get on the same wavelength?

I'm not even opposed to trying toxic ships and other arrangements if it's done with some awareness on both of our parts as RPers. I'm saying this as someone who's had stuff sprung on them before. Like one time after I agreed to a ship the other person threw in a pregnancy out of nowhere not long afterwards. Never plotted it, much less agreed our characters were at a point where they were even sleeping together.

ARE YOU SHIP OBSESSED OR SHIP MORE-OR-LESS?

Ship more-or-less. I got into RP to write about action-adventures/mysteries/etc. and the people who go on them together, or oppose one another.

If there happens to be a ship along the way? Great! And I can only hope it enhances storyline stuff, whether it's a healthy relationship or a toxic one or whatever.

Ask after we've had some interactions between the characters for a while. Then we might try at plotting, figure out what kind of relationship it's going to be for the characters, how their respective lives might mesh.

Enthusiasm is always appreciated! But if I feel like something isn't working or should stop, please respect that and I'll try to do the same.

It also helps as a general RP thing not to gloss over character dialogue/actions/lore/etc., or to exclusively view it a certain way (ex. the most common one I think is jokes. But like at every turn).

I'm contemplating what to do for Hancock's jewelry and bouncing ideas in my head for the two new Oh Sweet Child requests.

I'm thinking something like a choker but it's a snake that gently bites the end of its tail. I've long had a motif that folks connected to the RA have a pearl somewhere in their jewelry so maybe the eyes?

Perhaps some scales are gemstones depending on what kinda snake I do though keeping it mostly gold would match with her usual tastes ngl.

Considered a hanging chain from the fangs to a teardrop ruby that is meant to hang between or just under her breasts. I forget if there's a specific name for this but it's usually only done to compliment a plunge neckline or draw the eye to the breasts in general for women--I've never seen this in men's jewelry fashion unless you count dog tags or a ring that is meant to hide under a shirt when desired. Maaayybe 'drops' of rubies down the chain as a sexy intrigue piece that also hunts at how damn dangerous this woman is to get close to.

Okay, so thoughts for Whitebeard's platonic end

I'm not entirely sure on what I'll have for his. Maybe reader has a bad dream (cliche I know lol) and ends up talking to him in a little heart to heart.

Oh! Or maybe reader sneaks out when everyone has passed tf out during a party to try and either escape or get fresh air without being hounded. Idk. Depends on when this takes place cause at the end of Sweet Child they've pretty well resigned to sticking around.

Anyway, party walk, the reader thinks everyone is asleep but as it turns out, Whitebeard tends to be a very light sleeper when on deck and it leads to a soft conversation.

I've tried very hard to not have too much detail in reader's past so it's not specific to anyone--no mention of family or friends--but I have mentioned some vague nothings about "shit choices" implying the marine enlisting wasn't entirely by choice. I didn't have any specific plans for that or secret btw, I just needed something to give the reader a reason to not fold immediately into Whitebeard's crew.

Anyway, I thought it'd be sweet if part of this heart to heart is a conversation about wanting to have a choice in a world that very much doesn't really let you have that. Not knowing what they want to do with their life because they haven't had the ability to put much stock into the future--which is ultimately why they're so passive about their fate despite having a desire to leave.

Which naturally leads to Whitebeard talking about the different reasons he "adopts" his children. The one relevant to the reader is protection and a desire to see them flourish. He didn't seem them out but he knew when they arrived that he wanted them to be apart of his family.

Maybe he suggests they start writing about the many dangerous animals they seem to have a natural ability to charm. At the very least, it gives them an excuse to go after them and well... It's hardly the most dangerous hobby any of his children have picked up Whitebeard adopts feral pirates almost daily he feels kinship at how much reader loves things that could and would rip them to shreds.

And finally Izo.

Izo gives me the most trouble because as far as I'm aware of he's a fan of his guns and he likes cross dressing--if only just in cosmetics and performing traditional Japanese activities that are usually reserved for women like dancing.

I'd need to double check that last part honestly but that's where I'm at right now for understanding his character.

And he hasn't really shown up so I don't have any real basis for his stance on the reader--nor do I have any direction for the request. But I feel like he'd admire the reader not caving into the crew quickly given that it shows they do have dedication and standards.

But I'm pretty lost in bonding for either romantic or platonic senses. At least without getting into conversations about gender which would be difficult to dance around without assigning the reader a specific gender outright.

I know from comments most assume the reader is female and in rather hoping that's because the readers are mostly female as opposed to me missing glaring red "THIS IS NOT A MAN" flags... Which would make me sad cause y'all it's really hard to write some of this stuff without committing to a sex or gender 🥲

But! The point is that from the sounds of it so far, at the very least the reader doesn't typically do any of the cosmetics associated with feminine presenting fashion. So I'd need to be very careful in phrasing to avoid breaking this without talking about "well I'm a dude and dudes don't usually wear lipstick where I'm from" or "I was never a girly girl growing up" cause of the obvious reasons (at least I hope it's obvious).

I'm just not sure what kind of common ground they'd bond over so there's a strong chance it'll be a bit before Izo's comes out, unfortunately.

Perhaps a conversation about duty? And growing last what you'd previously assumed would be your entire life??? That'd be interesting and a unique point only the marine!reader could come from given the drastic difference from marine to full on pirate.

so, if i were in control, it would definitely be a television show, with three seasons and nine episodes (three chapters per episode) in each. and the casting - poc for the seam and actual teenagers for katniss, peeta, gale... i'm deleting nothing and no one.

/also, in my hypothetical universe, i'm inviting literally everyone who worked on dark netflix, cause if they can make a tv show about time travel to somehow make perfect sense than i need them and i trust them/

now, to actually answer the question, it would have to be an everlark-related scene since i'm an everlark trash okay (and their love story is so crucial to the main narrative that you'd have to rewrite the book if you removed it, so showing how and why it's so special is important!)

It's difficult to choose only one because their love is idk, like so consistent? it's always there in some form, and even the small moments that may appear insignificant to others are still so necessary. anyway from thg it would be the cave scene in it's entirety idc i need it all, from cf stay with me - always (i'm sorry but where is katniss being in love with peeta's eyelashes?) and from mj, it'd be katniss's dream about that moment (i want all the dreams and flashbacks, especially the ones with her dad - he's so essential to her and so alive in her heart, and i want to see him).

/you can stop reading here cause i just can't stop and technically i an cheating cause this scene was in the movies but it.was.so.bad. and much much shorter than it was in the books/

the bread scene.it was like what? two minutes long? believe me, i understand the time constraint and my maybe unrealistic expectations, but it is so detailed and vivid in the books that if you haven't read them you get absolutely nothing from it in the movies. nothing.

and i want to see every single thing. i want to see katniss and prim in school, finding out that their father is dead. i want to see her mother's succumb to depression and how it affects her children. then i want to see them struggling and katniss attempting to hold it all together but falling cause she is only eleven years old! things continue to deteriorate as time passes, to the point that they are on the verge of dying.

then as her last choice katniss goes into town and knocks on people's doors, begging them to buy her and prim's old clothes, and no one does anything (then we could also see that folks who live in town have a different appearance than she does and are better off, and we can see and feel the class/racial divide in d12, and how, despite the fact that they are all oppressed, people of color still suffer more - so when peeta helps her we are actually surprised that a ”rich” white boy actually cares and notices).

and again, we can see how near she is to death - how skinny, tiny, fragile, and young she looks. she's hungry and desperate. she's searching through the bakery's trash when peeta's mother sees her, yells at her, and is just plain cruel. then behind, we see peeta and how healthy he looks compared to katniss. but he gets a determined look in his eyes cause he understands what's going on and that he just needs to help her.

then katniss, tired, and crying, and scared, falls underneath the apple tree and gives up. then we hear a crack, a hit and see that peeta's mom has hit him because he burned the bread and that she is also cruel to her own child. but while that's just another day for him katniss look at the scene shocked because her parents never did that (are we even aware how rare that is!) and then he is throwing the bread and we see her confused look like - you gave this to me? on purpose?

then she's running away in the rain and she get's home and makes prim, her and her mom(!) eat together like a family for the first time since her dad died.

the next day at school, katniss is staring at peeta, wanting to thank him, but he's surrounded by friends, he's a merchant, and he has a black eye because of her, and how do you even properly thank someone for not only saving your life but also the lives of your sister and mother? so she averts her gaze, embarrassed, but now peeta is the one staring, and then he sees her picking that dandelion. then her and prim are picking them and making a salad, things are slowly starting to change for the better and that's where it stops. that is the end of the bread scene.

i know it's too much, i get it, but this moment needs to be done right if we are to completely understand everything about katniss and peeta, and i want it all.

Idk if anyone even cares but here's my thoughts on the Gen 9 starters!

First off: they’re all really lovely designs, yes even Quaxly. Kudos to the artists! I’m in love with these beans!

Fuecoco: I’m a huge fan of 'mons that are creatures disguised as objects. Applin definitely comes to mind with this guy, and that’s my only complaint- why is the Fire-type 'mon based off an apple?

If you could go back to school, would you? I'm in school! I actually had to drop out for several long years due to chronic illness. I had to move to find a school willing to provide accommodations, but I got started again with online classes almost three years ago. Now, I'm finally (finally!!), wrapping up my last subject for upper secondary school, which qualifies me for higher education. I literally sent in my application for art school last night<3 Everything is terrifying but also exciting but also terrifying but also there's no other way but forward, so.

can you parallel park? nope, I can't drive.

a job you had that would surprise people? Have not had any jobs.

do you think aliens are real? Well yes. the universe is infinitely big, I do believe some form of life exists out there, whether single-cell organisms or a more intelligent species. Do I think they came over here and built the pyramids? no. no i do not.

can you drive a manual car? still can't drive...

what's your guilty pleasure? i don't know, do i have one? I like lots of things people might find cringe, like, 80's love ballads or early one direction songs, but I wouldn't say there's anything I think of as a guilty pleasure.

tattoos? can look really cool on other people, though they're not necessarily something I'm inherently attracted to. also, they are not meant for me. I'm too indescisive, too afraid of making a mistake, and too aware of how changeable I am. I hope I keep growing and changing for the rest of my life, and I don't wanna put marks on my body that define me as someone I've moved away from, if that makes sense.

that being said, there are some tattoo artists i follow on instagram whose work i really like. People who do the loveliest watercolour work, people with insane colors, people with gorgeous, folk art-style. If I had to get a tatto, I would go to one of them, and let them dream up something wonderful.

I think spotify usually tells me it's some type of folk indie pop rock-thing, but it's easier to answer the reverse: I don't really listen to opera, screamo/heavy metal or dubstep/edm. Aside from that? I love gathering artists and songs of all different styles from all over the world in all different languages. I'm eclectic at heart.

do you like puzzles? yes, although it's a struggle to do physical puzzles as I can't seem to find a spot with good lighting. But I've done lots of digital puzzles and they're fun.

any phobias? my fear of insects has gotten progressivley worse. specifically the crawling ones. especially if they have lots of legs, and are fast. ughhhh. does it classify as a phobia? idk.

favourite childhood sport? the words 'childhood' and 'sport' in combination are rarely associated with enjoyment for me. idk. we played a game similar to baseball sometimes, that would probably have to be the one but... I've never really been a sports-person...

do you talk to yourself? Hm. rarely out loud, but often in my head.

what movie(s) do you adore? the first lotr movie = ultimate comfort movie. Mamma mia, pretty woman, notting hill, wild child = fond childhood memories w/ my mom. Billy Elliot and the way back are two movies I've watched several times and really really enjoyed, like they just stand out in my mind. Divines, which I stumbled across on netflix, is possibly my fave. If I were to rec someone one movie, it would be that one. I just think it's good. I vibe with it.

Hi betts! I hope you’re doing alright and that your semester is wrapping up smoothly. I have a question about genre, I guess? I’ll preface this with the fact that I am not a writer or lit person, but just an enthusiastic reader. But as I’ve been on Tumblr and TikTok (in this case BookTok), I’ve noticed that it’s a lot of the same kinds of books that people get obsessed over. Largely, SFF written by women and often in “new adult.” I’m thinking of V. E. Schwab, Leigh Bardugo, etc. I’ve read a number of these books and enjoyed some of them quite a lot, but they’ve never captivated me the way they do some. That’s fine, people have different tastes. But after being served yet another TikTok about this same category of book, I kinda realized that for some reason they just don’t feel that adult to me. Which is weird because they typically deal with very adult themes. Some are super sexual or violent and the like, but the way they’re written doesn’t feel mature to me. Even The Poppy Wars, which is very adult, falls into this category for me (I did enjoy this one, though). I’ve tried to interrogate this for bias, especially since I know a lot of people like them because they are written by women, (mostly) feature more diversity, and have large female audiences. But then I think about which books did feel adult, but fall in similar genres: N. K. Jesimin and Ursula Le Guin come to mind (even her youth fiction feels more adult to me). So I guess I’m curious what you feel makes a writing style more mature versus simply the content? Why is it that SFF, while often depicting adult events, doesn’t come across as mature? I guess my frustration is that it’s one of my favorite genres, but the recommendations I’m getting across many folks just...isn’t the SFF I want. How does one distinguish between these? Idk if I’ve expressed this well and I definitely am not trying to judge people. I’m just looking for a certain atmosphere in my reading that I find rarely.

i’m so excited i have an answer to this. so first i want to say, i experience this also and it’s why i struggle to get through a lot of books. it’s why i love the secret history but couldn’t get twenty pages into if we were villains, even though everyone told me they had a lot in common. even if the description of a book is compelling and the story is very much to my taste, and even if the writing is totally competent, i’ve found that sometimes there’s just something lacking that makes me set a book down and never pick it back up. 

i was thrilled to find there’s term for this: the implied author.

the implied author was coined by wayne c. booth in his book the rhetoric of fiction which, while dense, is a really fantastic read (if you’ve been keeping up with my newsletter you know how feral i am for this book). as a blanket definition, the implied author is the space that exists between the narrator and the writer. when you read something, you can’t make any factual conclusions about the writer (the author is dead and all that), but the narration often tips you off to the idea that the consciousness behind the writing is wiser and knows more than the narrator. 

that’s a very condensed version of booth’s definition, which takes up like 40 pages. here forward are some conclusions i’ve drawn based on it. 

when the space between the narrator and implied author is narrow, some of us as readers tend to get bored pretty quickly. it’s what you’re referring to as maturity. however, when that space is wide, when it’s clear that the implied author is much, much bigger than the narration, that’s when i’m willing to sink my teeth into something. the wider that distance, the more i’m happy to ignore things like syntactical clumsiness or poor grammar. i would follow a good implied author into hell. 

for example, i could write a story from the point of view of a violent abuser. if you were to read it, you wouldn’t be able to say for certain that i, the writer, was not a violent abuser also. but you would be able to tell via the implied author whether or not there is an awareness of the abuse, whether it’s being written with intentionality. not morality, mind you, but artistic purpose. 

the implied author has an idiosyncratic relationship to the reader. sometimes depending on the complexity of the work and the critical reading skills of the reader, the presence of the implied author can be invisible. this is the catalyst, imo, to a significant amount of the present morality discourse. many (if not all) purity officers and antis don’t have the reading skills to be able to see the implied author, or that the moral trespasses that occur in fiction are written intentionally and for a purpose. they believe that anything depicted in fiction is advocating for or promoting that which it’s depicting. 

lolita is kind of the ultimate classic example of the inability of some readers to see the implied author. nabokov even has a fictional preface from the pov of a scholar doing research, flat-out telling us that humbert is a bad guy and Do Not Trust Him. and yet, lolita has been misinterpreted and vilified for decades now.

in that same vein, the implied author is the reason that some stories put a bad taste in our mouths. it’s how we reach the conclusion that a story is racist or sexist or homophobic outside the literal depictions of racism, sexism, and homophobia. how can you witness racism taking place in a story and know that it’s speaking to the experience of racism and not advocating for racism? that’s the presence of the implied author. sometimes, though, you can’t tell. sometimes a writer tries to speak to the experience of something and fails at making clear their own awareness. or sometimes, they’re just not aware at all. 

in fanfiction, the implied author takes place, in part, in the tags. i remember stumbling upon a fic written by a purity officer which depicted an extremely unhealthy, non-negotiated power dynamic. and none of it was tagged. i had no evidence the author was aware that they were even writing something “problematic.” obviously i support their right to depict whatever kind of relationship they want for whatever reason they want, but i did find it a bit off-putting, that this person who was a known harasser in fandom had no seeming understanding that they were writing the very kind of fic they were rallying against.

but, you know, my hands aren’t clean either. until the MFA, i was a very poor reader. for example, in 2010 i read the hunger games for the first time. in 2020 i re-read the series on my kindle, where all my annotations from 2010 had been saved, and so i got to see all my glaring misinterpretations of the text. every time katniss has to get dolled up in the capitol and made beautiful, i left a note like “ugh,” because i thought all depictions of performative femininity were Bad. even though thg is a YA book and i was an honors student in college, i was still unable to see that katniss’s beautifying was commentary on consumerism. i was oblivious to collins’ implied author, the presence in the book that is shaking you by the shoulders and going, THIS IS WHAT’S WRONG WITH SOCIETY. 

but sometimes, like in your case, the opposite situation occurs: you the reader are wider than the implied author, and so some books have little to offer you in terms of depth or insight into the human experience. i don’t mean that to sound pretentious or anything; what i mean is, we all read at different skill levels and for different reasons, and we all get different things out of the stories we read. we’re all at different places in our reading lives, and we all have room to grow.

i hope i explained this clearly enough! hopefully one day i’ll be able to write a formal essay on this, because booth wrote about it in the 60s and a lot has happened in fiction since then.
