In honor of the @rw-ship-showdown I wanted to write about Artihunter as someone who jokingly slapped them together pre-downpour and still thinks they are actually very compelling. Just not in the super soft love wins kinda way (Although I get why people like that more) And the only way I know how to do that is talking too much so heres a far too long slug essay-

Obviously the slugcats don't offer a ton of characterization but theres not nothing to work with. Their stories, whether by their roles in it or the overarching themes do provide a backbone to work with. Even gameplay itself can provide a bit. (for some more than others) Hunter, to me, is ultimately a story about selflessness. The goal is to revive Moon, which is very much an act of kindness from both Hunter and NSH. But the weight of that action is much more significant for Hunter- Hunter is deeply sick. They're on the clock, and for all their skill in combat none of that will ultimately help them to survive longer than their body can hold out. Moon is a close friend of NSH but that means little Hunter- Hunter really gets next to nothing out of helping them, and ultimately pays quiet a bit spending their limited time alive fighting to deliver that neuron so that someone else can live.

To spend ones limited days on helping another, in a game that very much stresses the unwavering cruelty of the world and nature- is pretty notable. (And you could even say that Hunter being the Hardmode of Rain World adds another layer to this)

And then we have Artificer. A storyline that very much stands out to people as more… villainous (so to speak) than the other slugcats. Artificer's story covers a lot of things. Trauma, violence, revenge, etc. Revenge is a bit of a selfish desire- That need to see someone hurt as they have hurt you. A punishment that ultimately does not fix whatever harm was done- but feels good to see because you were hurt and now those responsible share that pain.

Artificer's actions are founded in that need for revenge, their pups killed for overstepping boundaries they didn't know existed. Is it not fair for them to be angry at that, to punish the scavengers for their violence with their own? Why should the scavengers ever be forgiven when they and their pups were not? And that's how you get that loop- Harm for harm over and over.

The original action has been lost in a spiral of violence for violence. And here stands Artificer- their very spirit scarred. Not just because they sought revenge, but because they never ceased trying to scratch that itch for violence as an answer. Artificer only has two paths for their story- killing the scavenger king (Someone who, really, has little to do with the original 'crime' of the scavengers, but represents an important individual to them- as did the slugpups to Artificer), locking themselves as karma one for good and spending the rest of their life chasing creatures that no longer even fight back in a warped sense of closure- or to dissolve themselves in the acids of the void sea because they're too far gone to find any real peace.

They can't meaningfully recover from that state, not alone, twisting in on themselves. Even if they halt their actions, they've been using violence as a feeble defense against their own pain- violence that no longer has any real direction or basis. Artificer gets no real closure from killing the scavenger king. All they can do is continue the cycle, or try to scrub it away. No real peace in a prison of their own making. So you have a creature, who even with a strict timer on their life- a body that will crumble to disease, spends its last bit of time on saving another. And another who was so caught up in the pain of loss that were eaten alive by their own anger, poisoned their own soul on such a deep level even self-proclaimed gods have no solution for them. What peace can they offer each other? For Hunter, its only a fleeting moment of happiness- of selfish love, before their own body fails them. A bit of indulgence in something for themself. For Artificer, its a single, comforting thread to ground them again, something tangible to protect and care about again. But thats a thread that will ultimately be snapped under the cruel indifference of the world. Hunters timer will tick down regardless of if it takes another with it. Its a tragedy- its doomed to end badly. Whatever good it offers to either of them to find each other will only provide the fleeting comfort of a band-aid that will be ripped away too early. But all that can be worth indulging in anyway, if only for the moment. It doesn't change the ending, but the ending was never going to be happy. Its can so yuri

Barty is provocative as fuck and James is easy to rile up. Usually, it just leads to James storming off with Barty laughing. One time, James was having his own problems, and Barty came by and started a fight. James said the most offensive personal thing ever that got Barty so mad, he got personal too. Then they both are just yelling at each other, and everyone is kind of scared to pull them apart. Eventually James just tells him to fuck off and Barty does, for the first time, storm off.

The way the Brigadier acts in the episode towarda 2 versus how he acts towards 3 is so. Oh my god.

With 2, he's obviously so fed up with that little man's (affectionate) shenanigans and is constantly following him around as if he's obligated to keep him out of danger.

With 3, however, the moment he sees him hes like "oh hello you're very pretty :) I MEAN yes it's good to see you too".

Not to mention how 3 literally stopped 'nspecting the weird alien artifact (i forgot its fucking name eventhough I just finished the ep), which is a thing ALL doctors love to do, JUST to talk to the brigadier is insanely gay and i hate them both (affectionate).

I know several people who like LOVE seasons 5-7 (11th doctors run) and think the storylines and moffats writing are brilliant and I don't get it!!! what am I missing??? why does literally every single episode have the exact same stakes: Rory/Amy/the doctor is dead. forever. so dead. but wait!!! what if they aren't!!! why do so many of the explanations for why they're not actually dead feel so rushed like they were added at the last minute!! why does every single queer character act kind of weird and awkward about being queer!! why does the doctor casually say that women are inferior when no one's around!!! what the fuck!! hello!!!

I've been contemplating where i think succession is going, in this, its final season. Seeing Roman and Gerri's tenuous relationship grow sour, and watching the relationship between Shiv and Tom transform into something we have never seen before, i have lost all confidence i once had that TomGreg would at least be acknowledged as a thing that exists. I think that Roman and Gerri had such an interesting dynamic, and i genuinely believe that love was possible, if it didnt already exist. Roman obviously has mommy and daddy issues, and you can say its unhealthy or weird, but Gerri was the person that he showed the most of his true self to, and Gerri wasn't repulsed by it, but enthralled, intrigued, they matched each others energies perfectly. But now that's been taken away from him, most heartbreakingly so, on the day after his father passed away, where he has to act like he doesnt care about her anymore, but inside, desperate to cling to her for comfort, but alas, no comfort was to be had. So, we've had this relationship of sorts, built up, and in one fell swoop its been destroyed, and treated as if it never happened, back to business as usual.

Which brings me to TomGreg. These two characters have been glued to each other since season one, and now all of a sudden we're supposed to ignore all the not-so-heterosexual conversations and gestures between them? Tom and Shiv are now having a more Tom and Greg type relationship, Tom's able to be openly hostile and upset towards Shiv when he feels that way, rather than hiding it away within himself, or taking it out on Greg. He's able to stand up for himself and what he wants, he's able to offer support to her if she wants it, but when she declines he has the confidence to not worry about it after the fact. He is able to care for her still, but she's not his entire world, he's not relying on her for emotional support or financial gain, its almost like they are back to when they first met and fell in love. Meanwhile she is purposefully trying to make him jealous, and willingly comes to him for emotional support, rather than ignoring him, she's hostile towards him, but in the way a kid lashes out when they are frustrated and dont know how to tell their crush that they like them. All this points to a possible reconnection between the two, and a healthier relationship than it once was, and that would be fine, if Tom and Greg hadnt had the relationship that they've had up to this point. You dont get to set up this dynamic between two weirdos, stuck in a world of apathy, make it seem like they are the only two people in the show that get each other, and have each others backs, and reach for in need of comfort, and then turn them into the disgusting brothers, and pop a baby up in Shiv, kill her father and then fix the marriage, because lets be honest here, if she wasnt pregnant, and especially not pregnant at such a scary, stressful and sad time of her life, there would be no chance that this marriage could be seen as anything close to salvageable. So if that is how this story ends up going, its gotta be seen as bad writing, im sorry, especially the pregnancy aspect, its always such a cop out, like, "oops, she wanted a divorce but now shes trapped in a toxic relationship!" no, im tired of this kind of story. I think we have had enough in this show to actually call the relationship of Tom and Greg canon already, but one of the main reason i want it on screen is for representation. There are plenty of lgbtq romances with teens or young people, and with shows like The Last of Us and Severance, we get representation for older gay couples, and that's beautiful, and i love it, but its not enough, how many mainstream shows or movies have you seen where a middle aged man and younger man fall in love, and its not abusive, its healthy, and its actual love? and how many of those romances are between a man that is bisexual even? its not that common at all, so the idea of a canon romance between two characters that millions of people have grown to know and love, one being a closeted younger man, and the other, an older bisexual man, that just feels really special to me, and i'd be sad if it didn't happen. Of course my desires for Tom and Greg's relationship to become realized are not entirely selfless, i also love the characters and think they both can be happiest with each other at this point in their lives, and since we wont ever see these characters again, i'd like to know they are going to be okay by the time those credits roll for the last time.

I've kinda seen some pushback to the idea of representation in media and I don't necessarily think it's bad to point out actual rights are more important than Disney's thousandth first gay character that's fine, but I've had a LOT of people comment on my works about asexual characters and tell me what I wrote changed their life-and it's always that phrase- because they now have the language to describe what they feel. I've had people who ARENT ace or aro comment that what I wrote finally made a concept they didn't understand make sense, or that the way I explained things was interesting and enlightening and I'm kind of a mediocre writer who hasn't written anything in ages.

Like idk, if reading something from a writer who is fucking around and only somewhat talented can genuinely impact someone because they've not seen anything like them reflected back at them in life or media I don't think pushing for representation in media is as "needless" as some people seem to think and caring about that doesn't mean you don't care about more "important" (although if you think seeing people like you in media ISNT important it's because you already have that representation or are privileged enough to not care if you do, in which case maybe pipe down) stuff. Hell, I even got a Facebook message ages ago from someone who found a comment I left in an ace group about QPR's and what they meant to me and how I perceived them and the person no joke said what I wrote two years before they even found it changed their life forever because they finally knew what kind of relationship they actually wanted.

So like sure, of course there's always bigger fish to fry them diversity in media (you know, like diversity in real life lol) but I don't think it's as frivolous as some people are beginning to act like it is. At least not if you're an aspec person it's not, I STILL don't see ace characters almost ever and I'll bet my whole everything if I asked a writer of a show why they'd tell me that EVERYONE has to be in a sexual relationship and characters that aren't won't sell and are boring- I say this because in film school I had a teacher TELL ME every character needed to basically be sex obsessed and when I pointed out a GREAT MANY CHARACTERS are not revolved around sex (Supernatural stars two brothers, I pointed out) and when she asked if I had love interests I was like ??? That doesn't matter- using my aforementioned supernatural example almost all their love interests die or get mind wiped because at the end of the day that's not what the story was about. So actually I think writers who act like that teacher need like 50 reality checks, and representation in stories isn't unimportant and also support indie writers you'll probably find more funky shit there then Disney anyway lmao.

And also even the asexual characters I DO see in media don't remind me at all of myself even if I appreciate the effort, but they never feel real or genuine and their sexuality doesn't get a lot of exploration so 🤷🏻‍♀️ I actually could use more media focused on characters that I can genuinely see my sexuality reflected in in a meaningful and narratively impactful way because I've got nothing.
