on today's episode of "pieces I put way too much work into realistically!". Since it's unlikely we'll get a quinceñera for Luz at this stage of the show, I wanted to draw a cute scene of it, which slowly turned into posing and lighting practice

Deciding how Doll would act in this little AU thing is proving a touch troublesome See, her motives aren't exactly clear at the moment

TLDR: It's tricky to figure out where Doll's thoughts are at this point. So, I'll try my best to keep her in character. Episode 7 and 8 might reveal stuff that'll make AU her out of character, and I'll just have to live with that

overly long character rambling below:

Like, from episode 3 we know she's willing to kill a bunch of her peers in order to set up a revenge trap. She tried to kill Uzi, and was fully prepared to try again even after being beaten. So she is very open to killing, even if the person has proven capable of beating her.

But, upon finding out Uzi also has the solver, she decides against it and claims she'll try to help Uzi if she finds out what's going on. And back in 2 we see her risk having her powers revealed to keep Lizzy from opening the door. Was that her trying to protect herself or Lizzy? Maybe a little of both. But, after the revenge plan goes south. Rather than kill Lizzy, she tosses her into the bleachers. So she won't kill those she's close to (even after Lizzy tried to warn V, mind you) or those she can empathize/sympathize with (a girl she's bullied for years, but also happens to be infected with the solver)

Currently, Doll wants answers about what happened to her parents in the labs and the solver, similar to the main group. Despite that shared goal, Doll makes it clear she does not want to work with the Uzi, N, and V on this. But at the same time, she was prepared to go down into the lab with a disassembly drone and a human. Which she changes her mind about after Tessa shoots at her, and the main trio show up.

She had the key bug, she got to the elevator before them, she could have just called the elevator and went down before the main group got there. But instead, she sets a trap to kill them. Why though? Why try to kill them, and why now?

Was the grudge against V so strong that she was willing to get all of them killed just to get to V?

Did Tessa tell her something, and now she can't leave Uzi and N alive despite sparing them? Because at the end of 5 she seemed ready to just take the bug and leave them to their own devices. (Though, she could also have just weighed her options and decided it wasn't worth trying to kill any of them, but I digress). And even at that point, she seems to have some respect for Uzi. Like, at least a sliver of it, based on what she says to Khan. Likely based on Uzi choosing to protect her friends over continuing to fight her for the key bug.

And that's without even getting into how much she knows about what's going on. How much did Tessa tell her? She had to say something in order to convince Doll to help get the key, but how much of her hand was Tessa willing to show?

Does Doll know the Earth was destroyed? Does she know who CYN was? Does she know that the disassembly drones used to be workers? Does she know Nori's probably behind the core melt down? Does she know that Tessa plans to kill all infected drones? And if she does, does she agree with doing that and has just accept her fate, or was she just playing along to get Tessa to help her find answers?

I could continue to ramble on, but this post is long enough. Needless to say, I'm excited for 7 and 8

and if any Doll fans out there have some theories or head canons, I'd love to hear them

Your brain functioning on pure panic and an odd sense of attraction to this man, you answered too honestly, "Sexy."

His giggling stopped and immediately you winced. What. Others in the crowd made horrified, over dramatic gasps at your admission. A criminal like him?! The indecency! Riddler was giggling again in a hurry. You could see a flush creep up his cheeks and ears.

"What is that, pretty?" He holds a hand to his ear before clutching his gut in laughter, "Oh, sweet thing... I won't make you repeat yourself." He whistles, grabbing a pocket knife to cut your bindings.

He pulls you up and to him, one hand on your arm and the other hovering over your face. Loud humming.

A click of his tongue, "I suppose I'll just have to allow you to go- For now. A fine specimen like yourself shouldn't be trapped amongst the common species, after all." He seems to trace your bottom lip with his fingers. Looking for some sign from you.

When you give the smallest nod, he's twirling you into his arms into a grand kiss. Honestly, it's might be one of the best you've had in your life. Passionate and you feel like you could float off your feet. He spins you back on your feet and takes something off a nearby table.

One of his henchmen is guiding you out the building on his orders. The whole thing is such a whirlwind, you hardly even noticed the small card Edward Nygma put in your hand as you left. His phone number and a heart with a question mark inside. "Call me."

• Even fresh out of a terrible situation, Simeon (outwardly) keeps it together a little too well. He's afraid of looking needy or high-maintenance, especially when he's barely been in your home for long enough to prove that he's worth keeping around. Thus, he does his best to be as compliant and non-troublesome as possible. You get a quiet, polite angel with a permanent, serene smile and seemingly no concern for what had happened to him before. And yet, that good behavior won't last forever...

• The reality is that Simeon is very, very scared of you. No matter how relaxed he acts, he's terrified of incurring punishment again. All he can think is that if he does, this so-far pleasant home will end up just as bad as the last one. He's an angel, and angels are known to be well-behaved. He can't just start acting nervous and difficult because of a few unfortunate things in his past. So even though he's stressing himself sick on the inside, Simeon does everything he can to not show it. He doesn't want to worry (or worse, annoy) you with his flaws or ruin your kindness.

• Really, the best thing you can do for him is just be patient. A calm, minimally stressful environment will slowly chip away at his fears, and spending peaceful time near you is all it takes for him to start to form a bond. Simeon doesn't exactly trust easily by now, but soon enough, he'll be able to tell that you're serious about being kind to him— and after that, it's just a matter of having enough time and accommodation to let himself relax.

Overall Review: it was an ideal lecture! if a person like this teaches the class, the class will be enjoyable but now that the evaluation standards are tight and strict, he's suitable as a major professor… it would be better to take classes from more laid back one when it comes to liberal arts but honestly it was more fun that I expected

My take on the parents "redemption"

It ain't a redemption.

At least not the Buckley's one, which most talked one.

I mean, we literally got an interview saying they won't be around and that this fact will be on Buck's mind to consider. The ending was merely them repeating their pattern behavior "Spoil when he get's hurt" at the end of the episode.

Even if Buck forgave them, I don't see the problem, specially if he did it for himself. For his own piece of mind, that is supposed to be the literal point of his arc in this season. To find himself at ease as he started to look for after talking with Bobby.

If to reach that peace of mind he has to forgive his shit parents and let that anger and frustration go out of his shoulders, be it. Not all the problems are equal, nor will they have the same solution. Sometimes forgiving is the most efficient and easy solution sometimes cutting ties it's the better. There is no pattern to follow. I think Buck's decision is for his own good, and that is completely valid for the point of the episode. That was him learning that his value is not linked on how people around see him, that he is enough. It not only a coincidence that the writers used the actual paternal figure Buck seeks guidance and admires to make him realize that. It should be very clear the difference set between Bobby and Buck's biological parents.

What is different from the situation with Chimney's father. The one thing really is troublesome.

Mr. Han couldn't even voice his feelings to his son, he couldn't communicate, his wife had to do it because the man is just too proud to open up. There was not a move to progress from his part in this relationship and yet he was given the chance the redeem. (Doesn't mean he will), this didn't fix the problems it just happened to give a chance they can be discussed, however as I said, it's undeserving in my opinion considering the move came from Chimney and not from Mr. Han.

Anyway my two cents here is that the Buckleys will prove again they didn't change, meaning the scene in the end was just a conclusion that Buck accepted thing as it is, meanwhile Idk what to expect from Mr. Han and Chimney relationshi, and that is what really bothers me.

She thought he'd look much better if he wore his size proudly. Being large wasn't always a bad thing. Being intimidating was often a very useful thing. Hello, tumblr. Imma write a story :)

This is my first time writing a story, I hope you like it. It is multi part, this is part 1. The story is called "You're Not Alone In The Shadows" and it's an original by me. All characters and artwork is also by me. Enjoy :)

You're Not Alone In The Shadows - Part 1:

Axel isn't scary. He just wasn't born that way. He doesn't really want to be, either. But he's a monster. What else is he going to be?

He's not supposed to be a "he", he's supposed to an "it". "It" is supposed to cause chaos and fear, pain and suffering, sometimes even death. That's how it works in the Shadows. It's quite unfair, Axel thinks.

Which is one of the reasons Axel is still awake in the middle of the day, crying in his resting chambers, once again.

"What am I supposed to do, Mei? Mum's gonna take me in to Void in a few days, and I have nothing," Axel says. Void is the innermost region of the Shadows, the farthest into the darkness monsters can go. Void is where the Cryptids live, and where Axel will have to attempt to get one as his sponsor.

And Mei is his pet harvestman. She came to the Shadows from the Light because the humans are afraid of her. She isn't even a monster, and she can scare people just by existing.

Mei crawls onto his shoulder. She's one of his only comforts.

Axel goes completely silent for a moment, listening hard to hear if his mum is sleeping, before pulling his phone out from under his bed. If it ever knew he had one, it would never let him out of its sight again. He bought it off a Penumbrian Creature on the street. It's illegal to have, but it has musics on it. Musics are strange. It's just noise, but it feels nice. Humans make beautiful things.

He puts on a music, his favourite one, and tries to relax. It proves very difficult. In just a few days, he will have to convince a Cryptid that he can be scary so that they will sponsor him to go to the human world. It's not what he wants, but if he can't get sponsored, he will end up a Creature, like that Penumbrian he bought the phone from. He doesn't want to end up like that, but that seems to be where his life is going.

Monsters have ranks in the Shadows. A Cryptid is a monster who is scary and well known enough in the Light that humans have given it a name, such as the Boogeyman or Nessie. Then there are Demons, monsters who are scary but not well known enough for a human-given name. Hellions are more troublesome than scary, but they still go into the Light, and they can at least cause the fear that is expected of monsters through causing pain.

Creatures are not scary, and they can't cause fear, and they rarely go to the Light. Monsters of all other ranks hate Creatures. Most Creatures can't make enough to live, and die of starvation. Some are killed by other monsters for fun. It's very rare they are able to get by even on the streets, nevermind able to get a place to live.

Monsters need the fear of others. It's currency. Axel's mum is just a Hellion, it barely makes enough fear to keep itself and a young monster alive and well. It won't be able to fund Axel anymore once he's not young.

The problem is, you can't move up in rank unless you go to the Light, and you can't go into the Light unless you are higher in rank. That's why, once you aren't young anymore, you need to get a sponsor.

It's stressful, and it's difficult to relax, but the music makes it a little easier. Axel just has to remember to put the phone away before he falls asleep.

A couple of hours later, he turns the phone off and hides it back under the bed, lays down, and goes to sleep.

Everyone experiences nightmare's but some are worse than others.

Lisa would definitely baby you until you're comfortable again.

By babying I mean rubbing your head, giving you light kisses, and stuff like that.

She'd also make you some tea if you're in the mood for that.

Once you're calmed down she'd wipe the remaining tears and if you hadn't fallen asleep by then would read you a book or if you're not up for that simply cuddle you.

Overall I'd say 9/10.

I say 9/10 cause for the rest of the night there's a chance she won't let you go which can prove to be troublesome.

Happily ever after (Yandere Overblot Vil x reader)

I just want to post my poetry about them at this point.

The graceful little prefect as you were titled in his head. Looks were above average in his honest opinion. Your hair would gleam in the sunlight one day as you sat by the base of the tree, and your eyes have a docile look in them that'd make your innocence more apparent. Rook was with you during that time which was when he first saw you up close, before any of this mess with the VDC arose.

When he finally caught the attention of both students, Rook was the first one to speak up.

"Ah, Roi du Poison were you in need of my services?"

"Pardon me to interrupt but I need to borrow my vice dorm head for some important matters."

"Ah, it's fine Vil-senpai. See you later then." With that the two were off to Pomeifore and Vil couldn't help but wonder.

"Rook what were you and the Ramshackle prefect conversing about just now?" He only asked because he knew Rook would occasionally behave in a way that would bring trouble and with that prefect with him more than likely it would.

"Curious? Mademoiselle Trickster and I were discussing the art of poetry of which she partakes in! Isn't it wonderful to write your feelings down with such passion it truly is magnifique!" After that Vil stopped listening and confided himself to his own thoughts.

'Poetry?'

That contradicted all of his thoughts on the prefect. He had caught word around the school about the prefect who hanged with two troublesome first years and always would be caught up in trouble. To hear him say poetry of all things definitely changed his mind a fraction about her overall personality. Not to mention her visage while she sat there in depth with whatever she was writing was one that someone would think brought out of a painting.

When the VDC training camp started he noticed more of her small quirks. She was neat and tidy, even if the whole dorm wasn't clean the used areas were. She was polite asking to help set the table or clean dishes with him. They didn't talk much but he noticed all of them. He definitely misjudged the prefect. She was a nice person. He understood why Epel got along with them. She wasn't a particularly bad influence on him.

There was something that annoyed him though.

The sparkles that would appear in your eyes. Just yesterday you complimented Jamil on his voice not only that but everyone else too. Except him.

He heard you talking once about Epel and what he did was wrong and wasn't right in your eyes. Yet you know nothing about what he's been through!

Just once he would have loved to see his effort noticed by her!

Is that too much to ask?!

He's always made out to be the villain in the stories!

He's never heard you compliment him before not only that but those poems. Rook told him that you write them for people your fond of and say them to that person.

Why hasn't he gotten one yet? Is he not good enough?!

All those sorts of thoughts kept piling up in his head. That is until his prayers were finally answered.

She heard him asking his phone the same question yet again.

"Mira, mira who is the fairest one of them all?"

With the same response he was about a second from crushing the phone in his hands. His anger growing from the lack of acknowledgement of his own hard work for the world to see. That's when she spoke up.

"Villains and heroes are fantasy.

This is reality.

And from what I see, the fairest one of all is beautiful blonde in front of me." It was a short poem, but one that spoke a thousand words despite its simplicity.

He turned to see her determination in her eyes. The spark in them did ignite something in his heart.

"It's not finished yet but I thought you might need to hear it now." She said it with such sincerity it caught him off guard a bit.

Why would she do that for him?

He couldn't answer the question himself but it did strengthen his resolve to over come the challenge and become the fairest. Because he had realized on that very day that he fell in love with you. Maybe he hadn't realized those words were to stop him from going on with the silly goal he yearned for.

The VDC was supposed to be his chance. If he could best him then he could prove himself worthy then he could confess and all would be well when you said yes. That comment on Neige's commercial didn't slip passed his ears. He had to prove he was better and winning would do just that.

But when his plans fell apart and you stood against him with a look of what was slight disappointment, and betrayal mixed into one, he couldn't help but to let his mind fall apart from losing one of the things he had tried so hard to gain.

Neige surpassed him again. He was tired of it, sick of it. And the outcome of it was showing her his most ugliest side, well that just won't do will it?

He'll just have to make you see how lovely he can be for you, how beautiful he is and that will be all of what you see.

Increasing the cloud of smoke within the coliseum more of his former team and managers coughed, trying their best not to inhail the smoke that would bring them their untimely demise. It didn't matter to him those who saw his ugly side needed to die and not tell anyone else.

That's when he swept her away, off her feet into where the backstage room was located. Just like a hero was supposed to. With a wave of his hand the purple smoke disappeared within the area and went back outside to the stage. Her coughs died down and Vil smirked down at the beautiful sight before him of someone he longed for.

"What's wrong my darling doll?" He had a smirk on his face seeing his efforts not be wasted for once felt overwhelmingly good to him.

"I'm sorry you have to suffer like this," he floated toward, her coughing fit was slowly going away and she gazed at him backing away from him in fear.

He noticed this of course what didn't he notice about her.

"Glancing at this ugly side you see before you, it's okay I understand. But don't worry, such a beautiful flower will never have its petals plucked again, for I will make sure of it. You won't have to remember seeing such an ugly side of again." Gently grasping her chin and touched the crown placed on his head aa he started to speak.

"To the first who looks into the wearer's eyes will fall in love until they die." Within the seconds he finished his chant her gaze was no longer of fear.

Nothing but admiration and adoration was visible in her eyes. It was perfect to Vil. Placing a gentle kiss on her lips which she returned eagerly. He had a gentle smile on his face a complete contrast to his current form reeking an aura of darkness and pure evil.

"You won't even remember seeing me, cause now all you'll see is my beauty and mine alone, my darling doll." Seems being a villain was far more worth it than he had actually made it out to be. The results of it were better than trying to play nice. He finally got his happily ever after.

You daughter get called the korean equivalent to the n-word.

It was just another day in Angel's school life, you know the average day of being hit on by her male peers because they've quote 'never been with a black girl before.' And her female class mates either feeling 'threatened' by her or just not liking her, and getting asked stupid questions such as 'do you shower? Can I touch your hair? Are you mixed?'

It was lunch hour when it happend. Y/n was sitting with her small groups of friends when Choi Jiji approached her with a troublesome grin that accompanied her round face.

"Hi! Angel hows your day?" She asked with a tone that Angel could tell was bullshit.

"What do you want Jiji.."  Angel rolled her eyes.

"Nothing, nothing! I just heard... that yoongi's son, ugh! What was his name?" She said playing dumb.

"You mean Jiyoung..?"

"Ahh! Yes! Him Jinyoung. Well I just wanted to let you know, he's mine. "

"Ooookayyy..... I'm supposed to care because?" Angel said adjusting her earring, unbothered.

"Well I just wanted to let you know... he doesn't date.." choi looked her up and down as if sizing her up before continuing her statement. "...깜둥이."

Angel arched her brow before standing up to the girl. "Excuse me! You wanna run that by me again?!"

Students both young and old began to look at the scene that played out in front of them.

Jiji stepped back shocked that someone had finally stood up to her, but still she held her ground.  "깜.둥.이."

One of Angel's friends stood up "listen Jiji the entire school knows you just pick on people because you're insecure! But there's no reason to pick on someone because of their race korean or mixed, black or white!"

"Thanks Sojin but she caught me on a bad day." Angel said before grabbing Jiji by her hair and pulling her on the ground, the two girls swinging some hits landing others completely missing. Their fight was cut short when teachers grabbed hold of the two and pulled them apart.

"You fucking bitch!" Jiji yelled.

"Two words.. suck a cock!"

Schools office.

"..... that's what happends Mrs. and Mr. Yoon. Your daughter.. Angel was heard telling Jiji to.. quote "suck a cock." As she was pulled off of Jiji. Here at Seoul School of Arts and Performances, we do not condone this behavior."

Jeonghan looked at y/n who was quite upset. He said what they were both thinking. "Well.. what are they going to do about the girl that called my child that name? Which by the way Angel that was three words."

Angel rolled her eyes earning a slap on the thigh from her mother. "Don't roll your eyes at you father. And Jeonghan don't encourage this behavior!"

"I wasnt!" He sneered looking at Angel winking.

Y/n cocked her head to the side waiting for answers.

"Well because her parents are one of the many investors in our school she-"

"Won't be expelled." Y/n said as she walked out clearly pissed off.

"Yeobo, wait." Jeonghan pressed.

"No! This school clearly cares more about money and representation than the safety and comfort of their students, so no I won't wait! Angel let's go." Y/n said sternly.

Angel slowly go up from her seat Jeonghan quickly followed after his wife and daughter.

"Jeonghan." The headmaster called out stopping Jeonghan in his tracks.

"Don't.. the public with hear about this."

He slamed the door shut as he entered the hall speed walking as to catch up to his wife and child catching y/n mid-sentence.

"..I can't believe you fought that girl! You know damn well that we blacks have a bad reputation because of white media and you further proved that shit to you fellow class mates.." y/n wispered looking at Angel then to Jeonghan.

Jeonghan waited until y/n turned the corner then wrapped his arms around his daughter. "Did you win tho?"

Promoting a giggle from Angel. "Yes appa.."

"I will beat you the fuck up, no cap..." they both said making popping sounds with their lips and lightly stomping their foot on the hard ground.

"That why your my Angel. Ignore your mom.. she's just upset, we both are and you should be upset as well.." he said.

Angel looked up at him "I know. I know what she meant to but.. Jiji had it coming. If it wasn't gonna be me it was gonna be someone else.."

Jeomghan pulled her into a hug. "Its alright. I'm on your side."

"Ugh! I know you are, now get off me your damaging my street cred."

Why do you think Genos isn't weak? I agree that he can fight monsters but he won't stand a chance against strong monsters. He has been with Saitama for the longest time but he never learned anything. His naivety is the reason why he is weak, he is still consumed by the "normative awareness". His reaction to Amai Mask's transformation is a proof of that. His mindset never grew. He respects Saitama but does not understand him, which is why he is weak.

Please let me apologise in advance. First, this is long. Second, I do have a lot of thoughts.

Yeah, But

There isn’t a character in this series where the fanbase disagrees with the writer so deeply as this guy.  When interviewed, ONE insouciantly said ‘Genos is rather strong, even for a Class S hero,’ and fans went, ‘huh? You could have fooled us!’  It’s not without cause.  No matter how well his fights go, ONE always makes sure that we can append an asterix to it, that we can go yeah, but*

Right from the get go, every victory is downplayed. He thrashed Armored Gorilla, but we had no idea how strong Armored Gorilla was. Not for many, many chapters, until a much-shrunken, unarmored Armored Gorilla killed a tiger-level monster with one punch.   He clears a city and defeats two troublesome demon-level monsters in a matter of minutes? Yeah, but look at the state of his arms and oh! see, see, he just got flattened by that other monster!  Bang needs to save Garou from his clutches?  Yeah, but what if Garou was well?  He’s turning monster after monster into Cubist expressions without getting a speck of blood on him? Yeah, but it’s not like we can see what’s going on – the camera pans everywhere else.  He does the unbelievable against Elder Centipede?  We start going wow, followed quickly by – yeah but the monster regenerated, he’s fated to always lose.  He destroys G-5 without effort?  Oh My GAWD!  The Honour of Atomic Samurai [1] Has Been Besmirched!  (me: huh how does that follow? No, don’t explain – I do understand. Because Genos is seen as weak, if he does what another character couldn’t, then it’s seen as a disgrace to the other character, not an achievement for him.)

battle without honour – if he beat Garou, then he’s a bully, if he didn’t, then he’s a wimp

Of course, the converse is also true. If Genos is having a bad time, the camera lingers in 4K with extra slow-mo. And if the action switches, like when he went from struggling against G-4 to working out how to shut the robot’s lasers down and pull it into punching range, the camera pans away, returning only to feast on the grisly aftermath.

The final clincher is Genos himself, who never reacts with the slightest sense of celebration or triumph no matter how well a fight goes.  His lack of joy in fights is something that ONE has emphasised to Murata.   Being able to celebrate with characters is half the joy of watching them fight.

by contrast, hell yeah, Metal Bat! The story leaves no room for doubt that Metal Bat’s to be found awesome. And he is!  :)

The reason I go into all this is that I get it: Genos is presented to us in a way that gives us cause to doubt his strength.  In that, he’s like the opposite of Saitama, who is presented to us so we can have no doubt as to his strength, but to the internal audience in a way that keeps raising doubts in their minds.

But Genos is strong. He’s physically very strong, very fast, and versatile.  And he’s far less fragile than he is popularly made out to be. There is no reason he shouldn’t be able to take on very strong monsters, subject to match up (like almost every other hero [2]). However, ONE will make damn sure that Genos does not get to appreciate how much more powerful he has grown. What’s it going to be? What’s it going to take this time to knock down Demon Cyborg? Are several cadre going to attack him at the same time? Or will the super-insane monster that looks like the lovechild of Smaug, better-looking Sauruman and a hydra perched at the top of the mile high tower do him in first?  What’s going to *keep* him down? Place your bets, folk: the outcome is sure to be gruesome.

Which actually brings me directly to addressing your assertion: “…but he won’t stand a chance against strong monsters.“  Because it presupposes that Genos MUST be weak, any monster he defeats can’t possibly be strong.  A more honest rephrasing would be ‘I’m not prepared to accept that any monster that Genos could defeat is strong.’

No mental growth? Really?

That’s the physical part.  Let’s go onto mentality.  Annoyingly, I have to treat the manga and webcomic as separate entities at this point.  If you like the detail, I’ve written an extensive side-by-side comparison essay: link. You can skip it for this answer. :)

You know what would have made me think Genos weak?  If Saitama’s fears for what might be happening to him the morning he caught up with Garou had come true:

Before Elder Centipede showed up, Genos had told Garou that he’d finally begun to understand what Saitama had been saying to him about strengthening his spirit.  And then ONE put that to the test when he put Genos in the worst pinch the latter had ever been in: chopped in half and about to be devoured by a monster, with the only heroes watching those who’d proved impotent [3] to do anything to the monster.  Instead of giving up the way he had against Mosquito Girl, Genos dug deep and not only saved himself, but counter-attacked and burned the monster from stem to stern.  That is excellent: there is no place for a character who cannot find self-efficacy in a pinch.  

Without doubt, Genos has further to go, but in the manga it is wilful blindness to claim that he hasn’t developed mentally.

Now, let’s move onto the webcomic.

Even though ONE has done far less with his character in the webcomic than he has in the manga, Genos is back and fighting when most of his classmates are still rolling on the ground, unable to come to terms with losing. There is a real strength to getting up again and moving forward. 

It’s not that Genos doesn’t have any doubts: he does.  From his crushing realisation that he had made a mistake in giving up his human body to asking if he can really become stronger by changing his parts, Genos is very aware of a sense of stagnation and appears very worried by something.  But still, he’s not giving up and he’s not stopped looking to make progress.

even as Saitama despairs of being able to help, he cannot fault Genos for his determination

Still, why cheer for a loser?

There’s a real cognitive dissonance in fans who praise to the high heavens and write as inspirational Saitama’s words to keep trying and moving forward, no matter what, and yet are happy to mock Genos for doing exactly that.

There’s no honour for you if you laugh at characters taking Saitama’s advice

It’s amazing.  Does anyone imagine that before Saitama became too strong, he never failed? Really?  Saitama himself will disagree with that!  Sometimes success looks like reaching the summit of a mountain, but often, it’s only visible in the rearview mirror.  We saw it took Saitama a long time to finally accept that yup, he was just the strongest.

Something I came to realise a while back, people say they love seeing struggle, but real fights don’t sell well in mass media (yes, I have more extensive thoughts on this, here). We like the struggle, but we want the assurance that the underdog has something in their favour that will guarantee that we’re backing a winner.  At one level, we know we’re just watching *how* Garou is going to succeed… at least until Saitama body-checks him to great dramatic effect.

Goodness knows that everything is arranged against Genos and success. I’m sure you’ll have no trouble recounting most of them:

His lack of a biological body to train up.

His dependence on a mechanical body with its set in stone limitations.

His dependence on the cleverness and resources of others.

His lack of innate talent or heritage (and if he had any, they’ve long since been binned).

His stubborn persistence on a pathway we’re sure cannot possibly succeed.

His mentality, which is getting better, but isn’t there yet.

His persistent psychological problems that put him at high risk of turning into a monster instead.

The unresolved mysteries surrounding him, which make lots of fans think there’s a devastating revelation at hand from which he cannot recover.

And oh, he’s not the most likeable or relatable character out there. It shouldn’t be a factor, but it totally is.

And yet, Genos hasn’t stopped moving forward.  No idea how far he’ll get, but so far, Genos has not set himself a limit to the number of times he’s willing to get himself up and try again.  Not only that, he’s raised his sights higher, not lower.

For that and more, I’m not only happy to call Genos strong, but I’m willing to follow along with him however far or short his journey ends up being.

The risk of heartbreak is worth the excitement of seeing a real fighter working out his uncertain destiny.

no one can accuse him of lacking ambition. Gambatte!

Asides

[1] I know there’s a meme going round about Atomic Samurai being weak, but it’s as much in jest as the one about King being strong.  Anyone believing Atomic weak has piss-holes for eyes.

[2] There’s a reason Phoenixman highlights four heroes in particular – Blast, Tatsumaki, Metal Knight and King (Saitama).  They’re the heroes who are so strong that they’ve broken out of the tyranny of match up.  Everyone else has something they can’t deal with.

[3] You’re calling two old men impotent? Have you no shame?! In general, no, I haven’t much shame.  In this specific instance, it is entirely warranted.
