I think @tumblemutantninjaturtles's idea of a collaborative fan iteration / AU of TMNT is pretty cool, and given that Splinter's only requirement in the species submission form is "mammal"...

Why not take the Rise approach, and try something different?

I would like to propose: Red Panda Splinter

He'd be adorable. But also fierce. And I just think that would be a neat combination for him.

(I have so many thoughts about species, so more below the cut)

I could also see Splinter as a squirrel, which would have the same sorta cute-but-fierce vibe. But he'd still be a rodent then, which is a bit closer to tradition.

I like the idea of Leo as a sea turtle for some reason. Maybe partially because I think he'd like swimming, and partially just because of the blue.

I like the idea of Raph as some type of tortoise (I can already imagine the others getting annoyed by Donnie's "technically, Raph is a tortoise" when someone refers to them as turtles) but I go back and forth on the Galapagos giant tortoise, which is the largest tortoise in the world... or a speckled Padloper tortoise, which is the smallest. But like, he's still physically the strongest because he worked out a ton to make up for the size difference!

I like Donnie as a snapping turtle or a wood turtle, since they're both considered to be very intelligent, and Mikey as a painted turtle, both for the cool markings and because they're considered to be very friendly.

So many possibilities...
