Would it be hasty to call M. Night Shyamalan's "Split" genuine hate speech?

It features a tragic villain w/ DID who falls victim to their own disorder and starts kidnapping & assaulting young women specifically to appease their trauma, which checks the "paints a marginalized group as ontologically evil" AND "depicts marginalized group that's overwhelmingly victimized by themselves and others as instead predators" boxes (with particular focus on how its the disorder itself creating the danger, not just the personal behavior of the sufferer)

It then goes on to faithfully recount flagrant misinformation about DID as if it were serious medical truth, mostly in order to underline how crazy & dangerous people w/ the disorder are, which checks the exact boxes you think it does.

Further, it depicts even extremely knowledgeable & competent healthcare professionals trying to help as likely victims of the (supposed) inherent danger to others DID makes someone. Which checks the "they can't be helped" box in red ink.

Then, 1/2 the initial motivation for this virulence is just to let some random white guy (James McAvoy in this case) show off his acting chops. Which is, more than anything, just tacky & insulting to the general audience.

It also is textually transphobic, given the way people react to McAvoy's character expressing the complexities of his gender (e.g. by wearing a dress and being a british(?) woman) with bemused terror. Full-throated "man in a dress" shit there.

So, yeah, hatespeech right? I'm not saying it's exactly "The Birth of Nations" or anything but like it thinks me and people like me are crazed lunatics that society is far too soft on, to disastrous results. Just sayin.

listen there really was just something about how in the book, snow’s 3-page descent from hesitant lover boy to deluded psychopath happens entirely in his mind. lucy gray gives him no indication whatsoever that she suspects him, that she’s going to leave or betray him. he’s just sitting quietly in the cabin waiting for her to return when that seed of calculated suspicion, which he has needed to survive the capitol, takes a hold of him and chokes the life out of any goodness left inside him. it really drives home your terror as a reader that “oh my god did he kill her? did she escape? what happened to her? why would he even think that?” in a way that when the movie had to adjust for visualization it lost some of that holy shit this guy has lost it emphasis.

some of you people are so obsessed with having an acceptable group to ‘punch up’ at that you would rather pretend a marginalized group are Basically The Oppressors™ than listen to their valid criticisms about the fact that ‘punching up’ very rarely hits the intended target, and the majority of the actual damage of that act is suffered by fellow marginalized people in your own community. there is a significant difference between venting frustrations about privileged groups and just outright attacking anyone who (you assume) experiences that axis of privilege regardless of - and in many cases outright denying - their actual lived experiences. it goes far beyond just ‘venting frustrations’ when what you’re really doing is trying to find a moral justification to bully people you don’t like, and when your own desire for catharsis and moral superiority leads to ignoring the voices of the vulnerable people you hurt. you’re not ‘punching up’ - you just like punching people for the sake of punching.

anyway in the past week the irish government has voted down two motions which would have condemned the genocide in gaza.

i need everyone to stop lionising ireland as if its not also a european government with strong ties to the us. american weapons pass through shannon airport and will continue to, because yesterday the motion to stop that was voted down 83 to 50.

other governments have done much more but somehow people still act as though ireland is the ultimate palestinian ally and exempt from criticism on its handling of palestine bc it was once colonised, even though that past experience clearly isnt being taken into account by the irish government when creating policy.

i live here i know there’s a lot of public support and sympathy for palestine, which is great, but that isnt reflected in government, and i think ireland should be treated like other countries whose governments have done nothing.
