Word count: 808 words
Kinda ooc, but enjoy anyways 😁💖
“I like you too.”
Kai never thought he’d ever hear those 4 words ever in his entire life. Especially from someone like Cole.
It felt like yesterday that they first actually met. Kai knew a lot of people in high school, constantly circling around groups with new friends every second. The only person he never got around, however, is the black-haired guy who sat on the left seat in front of him during Math. The lone wolf tends to blast his headphones with loud music, moving away from any kind of social interactions. His bulky exterior and quiet nature gives off an ‘intimidating’ aura, which makes it much harder for anyone to approach. The teachers didn't pay much attention to him, as he constantly got above average scores, compared to Kai's up-and-down average scores in certain classes. Despite the guy’s ‘too cool for school’ persona, that didn’t stop Kai to at least be a little curious about it.
The Secret Ninja Force has only recruited a couple of teens that showed potential to protect Ninjago from the evil Lord Garmadon, who attacked the city daily. It made Kai wonder what part of him chasing a local man for a loaf of bread with roller skates showed potential to something honorable like a ninja, but it's still a cool opportunity nonetheless. It was a bit rough for the first few days of settlement, first time meeting each other and all. Especially learning the fact that they’re teaming up with Lloyd Montgomery Garmadon, the most hated kid in Ninjago, to fight his own father who has been terrorizing Ninjago since before day one. They all come around eventually, understanding that Lloyd is just a normal teen like them, just with a bit of teen angst and massive daddy issues. You can’t not feel bad for him and his mom, at the very least.
Sticking around with Lloyd Garmadon got its perks, one of them being avoided like the plague. Kai is doing fine on his own activities, but it took him a while to realize that his sports team are talking about him behind his back.
It doesn’t really matter, because all Kai needs are his new masked friends he fought alongside with, one of them is… well…
His name is Cole, Cole Brookstone. Despite the bulky exterior, the brunet comes to realize the soft and relaxed look the guy kept on his face. His eyes, gentle and his voice, incredibly soothing. The brunet didn't find him 'intimidating' like what the people at school say. In fact, he finds him… kinda cute actually, which is a totally platonic thing Kai has to say about his fellow ninja-mate.
Hanging out with Cole is always the highlight on any given day. They’re always paired up during missions defending the city, spending even more time chatting through the communicators on the Fire and Quake Mech. The two even joked about building a 'Fire Stone mech', that is able to support the both of them.
Before he even realized it, Kai's smile started to get more lopsided whenever he locked eyes with Cole during class. His hand is always itching to comb his gelled hair neatly whenever Cole comes around between classes, smirking whenever he sees him. The way his spirit lifts up whenever he hangs out with Cole after classes. He is constantly thinking about all the ways he could get Cole to notice him. Maybe he’ll show off his reputable skills on the ice rink, and in that way, he could get Cole to skate with him!
It doesn’t matter what anybody says, as long as his eyes are on him. It really can't be helped.
Kai loved every little thing there is about him.
The way he took off his headphones to listen whenever he or their friends had something to say with full attention.
The way he tied his hair up messily during their missions and hot days to avoid his adorable face getting too sweaty.
The way he smiled sweetly whenever they hangout, the kind you rarely see when others are around as if it's only for him to see.
The way he made him feel loved and cared about, more than anyone in the whole world.
Kai's down, really bad.
…and Cole felt the same way.
Kai doesn't know what to do. His heart is pounding so fast that he couldn’t keep up, almost falling in the process. Luckily Cole’s hands are there to hold him, intertwining with his scarred hands. That sweet, rare smile unable to leave his face, accompanied by the redness on his cheeks.
“So, um, this weekend, do you wanna… hang out, maybe?” Kai asked. His thumb glided over Cole’s big hands, appreciating each curve. It feels really calming. “Just the two of us.”
Cole lets out a soft, satisfied sigh.
“Yeah, I’m free.”

The most common argument you'll hear against self diagnosis is that people will fake being [X] for attention. But every disabled person, physical or otherwise, knows this could only work in online spaces - the world was not made for us, and brandishing your disability as a badge of honor that gives you ~special privileges~ is such a funny idea.
Like, honey - that doesn't happen. No one gets anything from being disabled. Maybe extra accommodations if you're lucky - but nothing else. And the internet isn't as important as you seem to think - eventually it just feels hollow.
Ask disabled people how often they had to fight to get diagnosed so their medical needs could be met and their complaints would be heard. Doctors are just hardwired to delay this as much as possible.
I knew I was autistic since late 2018 - I got an official diagnosis 4 months ago. Knowing yourself and how you can make your own life easier is a lifesaver.
And this isn't even going into how many *cons* there are to a professional diagnosis, like being met with disdain at best and denied services at worst.
I don't care if a 16 year old who self diagnosed after taking 1 online quiz about autism is wrong. And honestly I think it's weird people treat this 'issue' with so much hatred.
