ok I'm not an expert but I'm not seeing much specific info going around here, and there's a lotta Palestine solidarity protests in the UK this weekend, so here is some (including UK-specific) protest info and resources (mostly pulled whole-cloth from Twitter)
policing is heavy at Palestine protests generally
Hamas is a proscribed org under UK law. that means "inviting support" for them or "wearing clothing or displaying articles" that implies you are a supporter is a criminal offence (if you're interested, here's the full list of criminal offences from gov.uk). Palestinian flags etc are ok*, but do not have something that could be mistaken for Hamas imagery. don't go out there looking for convictions pls.
*in spite of what Suella Braverman has implied, the London Muslim Community Forum has just confirmed that the Palestinian flag is not a proscribed flag and is not banned (apologies for quoting the "we advise the met police" group but I thought it was important to have that info explicitly)
don't talk to cops. that includes the police liasion officers in blue bibs.
particularly if you're concerned about your face ending up on social media etc, but also just good practice in general (both in terms of COVID and protest safety)—mask up. cover up tattoos etc.
have bustcards or contact details for protest legal support on you. Green and Black Cross can be contacted on 07946 541 511. write the number on your arm etc.
if you witness an arrest: check if there's a legal observer nearby and if so call them over; if not: if the arrestee doesn't have a bustcard, give them one, find out where they're being taken, and contact eg GBC or a protest support line
if you have the time and can help out, there will likely be arrestee support required after—GBC tend to post callouts on Twitter for this
other links
for particularly children and young people and their families being referred to PREVENT for pro-Palestine statements, contact PREVENTWatch and maybe also Palestine in School (newer initiative I think, I don't have an excessive amount of detail on them just FYI)
Liberty, Migrants Organise and Black Protest Legal Support have bustcards in different languages, including Arabic and Somali (also Liberty's website has lotsa useful info, including advice for disabled protesters, protesting and immigration status, and what to do if you're kettled)
GBC's thread on what to do if you see an arrest is useful, as are all their resources generally
if I've missed anything or made a mistake, lmk—as I said, I am very much not an expert. if you know people who are protesting, pass them the legal support line numbers; if you're attending, stay safe and be vigilant; and ofc carry water.

oh what about jin/azula. obv jin is most likely straight and definitely could do way better but she has in fact been shown to be so patient. and i think azula having a crush on a super normal girl could be so important
okay well @kyoshi-lesbians has in fact persuaded me already so yeah im here for it. mostly because jin is in fact completely fucking insane but also very normie passing and so they could be really funny together. like she would put up with so much shit from azula with a smile on her face but also she’d be so forward and confident and azula really needs someone who will help her navigate romance without judgement bc the poor girl is. so awkward. also i like that jin is working class and from the city azula literally occupied, bc then them being together signifies growth in more ways than one. obviously if at any point azula is like “yes i did perform the perfect silent coup on your city” she’d obviously have to follow it up with “but im a completely different person now and ive since dedicated my life to running a daycare for sky bison rescues & healing the sick and elderly.” but like. you know how it is

What does a game dev want on the holidays?
I say this with full sincerity. Three things I always want over the holidays are:
Time off with family
No showstopper bugs to be discovered during the holidays by the live team
For my job to be there and waiting for me when I come back in the new year
Tumblr media
Happy holidays, y'all.

I do genuinely enjoy pedantry and quibbling and disagreeing with fine-grained details of every sentence ever uttered as any good marxist does, the problem is that tumblr is a horrific platform to nurture that enjoyment on and turns all of us into grand dogmatists where any quibble is a sign of enemy infiltration

also not to get too deeply into a class debate because social class and classism manifests itself SO deeply into peoples lives in the UK in a very specific way that I personally am not aware of in many other countries. but george didn't grow up in an upper middle class family - they were comfortable, sure, and though he may be earning millions now chances are he doesn't see himself as having "moved up a class" because social mobility isn't really considered a thing here

Jack would have very affectionate friends and dean dosent know how intimacy works so the first time one of jacks friends just hugs him deans like “are you dating them?” Then one of jacks friends kisses him on the cheek and deans like “oh you have to be dating them then” and this just goes on with each friend he has and jack dosent correct dean because he thinks it’s funny :) Dean thinks his kid is a little whore however.

A trend of a manga series getting a popular seasonal adaptation, but in between seasons, the "anime only" fans start developing their own (Wrong) interpretations of canon, and get mad when the later seasons actually follow the original story, instead of following the weird fanon.
A few cases, a growing trend I think.
....
Pays to READ THE MANGA I guess.

The University of Chicago has been one of the top schools in the world for 100 years or more. Did you see the movie ‘Oppenheimer’? The parts with Enrico Fermi take place at UChicago (look up “Chicago Pile 1”.) In the film Fermi is the guy who takes bets on whether the bomb will destroy the world. He is known as ‘the architect of the nuclear age.’ There are an incredible number of Nobel prize winners who are/were University of Chicago alumni. It has produced more Nobel prize winners than almost any other university in the world (more than Oxford, more than Yale or Stanford or MIT.) Only Cambridge and Harvard have produced more. And there are the “Chicago schools” in various disciplines, which are influential styles or schools of thought that were developed at the University of Chicago (in particular in the fields of economics and sociology.. the latter of which is what Misha studied.) It’s a very prestigious school. Carl Sagan was an alumni, Bernie Sanders also. Barack Obama taught there. The list is long.
Woah, that's pretty cool. I mean I never doubted Misha was smart TM.

You have talked about certain things young designers can do that will set them up for failure, namely not studying in college, not prototyping ideas, and trying to burn themselves out by working to hard at the beginning and then slowing down later. What are other common early mistakes that will make a game developers job harder?
Tumblr media
One common mistake I see with young devs is that they invest too much of their identities into what they do for work. I can understand that quite well - for most of my early career, I did the same thing. I was the game dev. I worked on famous games that most people had played, or at least heard of. It's a really big ego boost when total strangers you meet know of your work and are impressed with your job. I would caution young devs to avoid this.
Tumblr media
One very hard lesson I learned over my career is that the industry is volatile. It's very easy to lose your job - the company financials start looking bad and there's layoffs. The game doesn't sell well and there's layoffs. The game is sunsetting so there's layoffs. When the vast majority of the costs in the industry are salaries, the vast majority of cost-cutting is how many workers to let go. We've seen a huge number of layoffs in 2023 and this year so far. I doubt we've seen the last of them. Job losses are commonplace in the industry, which is what makes the next part a really big deal.
Tumblr media
If a large part of my identity is based on my job, I'm suddenly forced to deal with a significantly changed identity when I don't have a job anymore. That's extremely difficult to deal with when the chips are down, because being jobless puts a lot more responsibilities on my shoulders for my survival - I need to be operating at my best. At the very least I need to project confidence and competence in order to find a new job. If I must go for an extended period without work (e.g. an economic recession), that gap in my sense of identity from being a game dev encourages depression and melancholy to occupy that space. Overall it's much more healthy to separate who I am from what I do so that I don't end up in this feast or famine situation, especially when I need stronger mental health levels to find a job than I do to keep a job.
