#in shadowhunters and the kiss in black sails.
Text
i have such strong memories related to black sails like. it was my mom's birthday. during a weekend. think 2018/2019. we went away for the weekend to this. place. idk what its called in english but yk rent a tiny house for like a few days. whatever. i can remember what it looked like. i sat on that couch watching black sails. my sister and i had to share a room and i managed to break the bed (not permanently) i had to sleep on & because even after fixing it i didnt trust it, i slept on the floor. it was on that floor that i watched s2 of black sails. it was on that floor that i saw that fucking scene that fundamentally changed me as a person. because. listen. black sails was one of the first shows id watched with a queer story. with not one but two major plot threads revolving around queer people's relationships. i remember sitting in the car in the dark as the rest of my family was ordering fries for us and i remember my mom going "hey look gay couple!" in a restaurant. it doesnt feel real. that entire weekend is a fever dream. i thought i was just watching a pirate show. the pirates were gay. the pirates were fucking gay bro. i cried over that show. i wept at the end of it. i had to play boardgames for my mom's birthday and pretend like i wasnt going insane because the pirates were gay and i was just. ough. i was 14 or 15 and i was barely out and i was new to being queer in any capacity and it was such an experience.

Somebody asked why I kind of take a dim view of the term “queerbaiting,” and it’s basically because I think it rests on a pretty dubious premise, which is that television shows are out there hustling for the cachet of queerness, particularly the cachet of a large mlm ship, but also unwilling to risk controversy by embracing queerness.  And my general observation is that there isn’t much benefit for a show to having an mlm ship, in terms of attracting media coverage or eyeballs or fandom investment.
Like, those shows exist!  They just don’t really become breakout hits, right?  The alleged mlm glamour never really provided a material boost, as far as I can tell, to Shadowhunters or The Magicians or Black Sails or Torchwood or Roswell New Mexico.  Sure, those shows had/have fans, but like -- to my eye, they’re not exactly hit shows.  An audience does exist that will turn up for most any show that promises to make cute boys kiss -- hi! me! -- but that audience is, observably, too small to turn a little show into a big show.  From a business point of view, I don’t see the benefit of chasing that niche market, knowing that they can’t do all that much for you.
It seems to me like the chain of causality flows the other way -- if a show is popular enough, if it gets enough advertising buzz, if it attracts a large enough audience, then a slice of that audience will reliably stake out shipper territory.  The Big Names often accused of queerbaiting are just, like, big shows in general -- Supernatural and Sherlock and Teen Wolf were well-liked anyway, and although they’re each unique case studies, I just look at them and the pattern I see overall is that a popular show generates shippers, whether or not the show even wants them, let alone encourages them.  And m/m shippers are an invasive species (I mean, with all love I say this, but we are), with the ability to really grab the mic and force a conversation, and I think what other people see as queerbaiting, I generally see as the creative team trying to navigate wanting to make as many fans happy at the same time as possible.  You really do not go into the entertainment business if you aren’t the kind of person who prefers it when your audience is pleased.  And it’s tough to keep a wing of your audience happy when you don’t intend, and never intended, to pony up for them, so you end up playing this weird game where you try to do more than nothing, but actually that kind of escalates the situation, and then also there’s a whole separate team from the creative folks who are in charge of marketing, and those two camps may not be on-message at all, or not on the same message, anyway. It’s Complicated, and from my position as armchair quarterback, I can usually notice where I think a misstep was made, but that’s a lot easier to see from the outside, when it ain’t my job at stake.
But in spite of the fact that these situations routinely get messy, I side-eye calling them queerbaiting, because “bait” suggests that creators and executives set out trying to capture this powerful demographic of people who can bestow favors and influence if they are sufficiently well lured-in by promises of queer content, and that’s not a demographic I believe is just out there roaming around in the wild, available to turn your show into a hit, and I don’t think tv executives believe that, either.  They run numbers for a living, and they can’t possibly have failed to notice that an explicitly queer show will basically never do as well as a show that -- isn’t that (the only example I can think of a really high profile show with a major role for mlm relationships is Glee, and Glee’s a pretty distinctive creature in a lot of ways), which means the payoff for adding explicit mlm content to your show is pretty minimal.  We are simply not the entertainment kingmakers we like to imagine we are, and I think the idea that we’re worth “queerbaiting” at all is an act of self-flattery that serves to disguise the hard reality that including mlm relationships anywhere near the center of your tv show is still a huge financial gamble, even in the Year of Gay Jesus 2020.

the most amazing thing about The Untamed is how it managed to utterly destroy whatever bar I had set for queer tv shows while being heavily censored by law
I mean how am I ever again supposed to be satisfied with anything ever again?
when I think about every fucking show made that was not subject to heavy censorship and how badly it has let me down, starting way back with BTVS and Tara, then The 100 and Lexa, then The Magicians and Quentin
Even canon queer relationships/characters (Shadowhunters, Roswell New Mexico, Wynonna Earp, Eyewitness, Black Sails, The Get Down, Elite, Stranger Things) we get, are never the main main story, are always an addition, an afterthought, and whatever romance there is, it’s never given as much weight or time as the hetero romance in the show
or god forbid the main character is actually queer, because you will get everything from suffering that is apparently (according to all show-runners ever) inherent to queerness and without which a story can’t be told, to a story that must be focused on something else (if our queers don’t suffer then their story must be completely overshadowed by the plot because what else can there be? after all, queers either suffer or have sex, and we can’t show the sex *screams into the void*)
and everyone always acts as if the queer community is asking for explicit sex between queer main characters and are unsatisfied with everything else, which just shows that even in the year of our lord 2020 people still think that queer relationships must be inherently sexual in nature which is just *shrieks*
meanwhile the best queer rep I’ve ever seen is a man who pines for his dead crush for 13 years, and once he is given a second chance to be with him, fights the entire world to keep him safe
there is not a single kiss, a single untoward touch, a single suggestion of a sexual relationship in this entire story which manages to be both fantasy/suspense/action/murder mystery/social commentary on everything from familial relationships to inherent evils of conformity to the true nature of evil
no plot overshadowing the relationship (but moving in tune with it, as it should), no hetero relationship being given more weight, plenty of suffering for every reason under the sun except the queerness of the characters
I just can never again be satisfied with the bits of Magnus and Alec’s relationship when I’m forced into an overshadowing pseudo-incest storyline at the same time because it doesn’t have to be this way
and the irony that a heavily censored story managed to be more queer than everything available in the Western “free and tolerant” society is both infuriating and mind-blowing and I think I’m gonna be angry about this for the rest of my natural life

I know there are lots of shows now with queer characters. Big ensemble shows like Sense 8. Shows with queer male leads like Black Sails (bless that show). Shows with beautiful relationships for important side characters, like Shadowhunters (honestly, there’s lots of these). There are sitcoms like Schitt’s Creek (bless that show too). There are movies about being gay like Love, Simon. There are Rainbow Rowell’s books Carry On and Wayward Son... they’re close and I love them, but it feels like more of a commentary on something (Harry Potter) than something in and of itself.
I’m just desperately craving a show or book or whatever--a big epic series--where the lead is queer and the romance is queer. Not a main hetero romance and there’s subtext with one of the main characters with a queer side character. Not a side queer romance. Not some random person who shows up in act 3 and is the only other gay person so he goes with the queer character, even though there’s been no build up at all. Not one kiss, one weird sex night. Not the queer character falling in love with a straight guy and it’s Tragic.
The main character is queer. The main love interest is queer. They fall in love and go on an adventure. The story is their story, not just one of many stories within the bigger story.

What should I watch next?
My latest television obsessions have been Roswell New Mexico (which ended up breaking my heart and making me extremely cranky) and Stranger Things (which I didn't get nearly as obsessed with and therefore enjoyed a lot more in the end).
What should I watch next? I tried watching Shadowhunters, but the, uh, acting style is just not to my taste, so I can really only watch gifsets. I also watched a few episodes of Black Sails, which is fantastic, but somehow didn't hook me (not enough humour?).
I'm considering:
Season 6b of Teen Wolf, which I never watched because I thought 6a was such a perfect sendoff and I was afraid I'd be let down
The past 3 seasons of The 100, which I stopped watching after two or three seasons for no reason at all, I think I just feel out of the habit during a hiatus.
The past few seasons of Nashville, because I love the music and they are great flawed characters and truly glorious visions (see note about The 100)
Shameless, because I think I only watched the first season
I'm looking for something with
a lot of humour
compelling ships (gay or straight, canon or fanon) without will-they-won't-they/queerbaiting that goes on so long that it just becomes insulting (e.g. I am not looking for something like Malex, Destiel or Queliot, no matter how much fun they were at the start). My current favourite ships are Harringrove, Jancy, Merthur and Gallavich.
some good kissing (none of this closed-mouth bullshit)
strong plot independent of the relationship drama
non-clichéd characters
a sci-fi/supernatural twist
minimal use of the idiot ball

welcome to new york
Catarina goes to New York for the first time. She reunites with Ragnor and Magnus there.
Content warning to some references to pregnancy due to Catarina's work (no actual pregnant characters) and to period typical (late 1600s, early 1700s) racism.
Gen | Words: 1222 | ao3
Catarina hadn't seen either Ragnor or Magnus for some time. Because she liked to know as many non-magic ways of doing medicine as she could, so she could make spells that did the same work and so she could teach mundanes, she'd stayed in Paris. There she learned their traditional midwifery, before moving down to Buganda kingdom in central Africa where she had heard of a practice that was saving the lives of mothers and babies- a way to safely take the baby from the womb called a cesarean section. She hoped to bring this into her practice elsewhere, and share it.
When Catarina got back to Europe, she found that Magnus and Ragnor had both gone to the Americas. Deciding she could help people just as well across the ocean as she could here, she set off. Sailing was awful, and Catarina found that she spent most of the trip taking care of both sailors and other passengers. She made it to New York nearly drained of magic, and shot off a fire message to the boys tell them that they would need to come to her.
Ragnor finally responded, Catarina found she was in the wrong America and that Magnus was nursing the loss of his mortal lover. There was also something about pirates, which was rather concerning. Knowing it would take some time for them to reach her, Catarina decided to set up practice for the mundanes in the growing city of New York. There wasn't much in the way of Institutes yet in the new world and Catarina felt she would probably be safe doing what she could for the locals with magic and potions, and not get harassed by shadowhunters.
Help was certainly needed. Catarina ended up healing broken bones, delivering babies, scaring away racists, teaching some little ones to read, and all sorts of other tasks that came her way. In return, she was given safe lodging with different families, plenty of food, and near-constant company. Both the free blacks and those trapped in slavery learned quickly that she was the one-stop shop for solving most problems.
Months later, Catarina was working on a potion to help a young girl with extremely painful periods in the kitchen of the current family that was hosting her, when a young woman came in. The baby Catarina had saved from fever was resting in her hip, which caused Catarina to smile. The woman's expression though turned Catarina's smile to a frown and she stood.
"Is there something wrong Abigail?" Catarina asked, moving quickly to stand by the other woman. "Is your mother okay?"
Abigail frowned more, then nodded. "Oh Miss Catarina, no one's taken ill that I know of. But I was sent to warn you."
"About what?" Catarina said, relaxing a little bit.
"There's a fancy looking white man looking for you," Abigail said, worrying her bottom lip.
Catarina relaxed completely. "This fancy man, did he say his name is Ragnor?"
Abigail nodded, "Yes."
"He's a friend," Catarina assured. "Was there anyone with him?”
“Another man, Magnus.”
Catarina grinned. “I'm almost finished up here, do you know where they are?"
"I can take you to them, I think Mrs. Thompson is giving them the runaround," Abigail said, seeming to relax with Catarina and now just looking curious. "He's a friend?"
"Old friends, they both are," Catarina moved to finish the medicine. Mixing the last ingredients, she added, "I've been expecting them, they were down in Peru."
"A long journey," Abigail agreed, bouncing her baby.
Catarina put the medicine in a vile, and put that in her pocket. "Alright, let's go."
Abigail didn't really need to lead Catarina to Mrs. Thompson's, but she could tell the young woman was still curious. Catarina was planning to stay prim and proper in the face of the people whose respect she had gained, but then she saw Magnus and Ragnor. She couldn't help her excitement, as she and Magnus ran into each other's arms, holding each other tight. When she pulled away, she saw Ragnor was watching with a fond smile, so she promptly launched herself at him next, making him have to catch her. He pressed her tight, and then Magnus hugged her back, leaving her squished between them. It reminded her of the time they had all crammed into a bed in deep winter to stay warm. Magnus had insisted on being in the middle, then.
When they finally broke apart, Catarina blinked quickly, and saw her friends were equally affected and trying not to appear it. They really had been apart for too long. Ragnor cleared his throat, and shot a look over at Mrs. Thompson and Abigail who were openly watching them, "You've certainly been busy."
"Catarina you're wonderful," Magnus said with a grin. It didn't fully make it to his eyes, and Catarina remembered what Ragnor said. Magnus was hurting, and they needed to do whatever they could to help him feel better.
But she couldn't stop smiling just to have them beside her again. "You know me, I don't know how not to be busy. How was Peru?"
"Magnus almost had us become pirates," Ragnor said, deadpan.
"I thought we were never to mention that to anyone!" Magnus tossed up his hands.
"Catarina was always going to find out, once you got some rum in you," Ragnor rolled his eyes before turning to her. "How was Buganda?"
"Wonderful, I learned so much!" Catarina smiled. "But I’m almost sad to report I didn't become a pirate."
"It's not worth it," Magnus leaned forward and whispered in her ear.
"Noted, honestly not my first job choice," she leaned right back, and he gave her another smile, maybe a little bit more real than the last. They just needed to keep Magnus smiling. "Well, why don't I give you both the tour of New York, and maybe I'll put you to work helping me with a few difficult cases."
Giving Magnus meaningful work to do, work that would help people would get him back on track. Probably better than whatever they had both been doing in Peru. As she turned and waved for them to follow, she paused in front of Mrs. Thompson.
"Thank you so much for looking out for me," Catarina said, pressing the old woman's hand between her own.
"I see it wasn't needed," Mrs. Thompson's expression said that Catarina probably had some explaining to do, but there was still a smile.
"No," Catarina said, and that was a promise. "Ragnor and Magnus will be helping me, and there is nothing to fear from them. You have my word."
Mrs. Thompson gave Ragnor a weary expression, but nodded. "If they're as good of folk as you, we're lucky."
"They are," Catarina promised. "The worst they'll be is if you give them some of your brew."
Mrs. Thompson chuckled at that. "You'll all have to come by to share a bottle."
"Alright," Catarina said, and pressed a kiss to the wrinkled cheek. Then she turned back to Ragnor and Magnus. "We'll start at the little apothecary I've put together."
Magnus offered his arm to her, and she took it, then they both turned expectantly to Ragnor. With a huff, Ragnor took Catarina's free arm and she began to give the boys a tour of her current home.

What are the important bisexual characters that you said helped you? I am having a hard time finding good bi representation in which they aren’t considered promiscuous or unstable
Hiya anon ! What a quality question, thank you ! Here’s another mini essay about bi rep lmao.  If there are some that I forgot please tell me ! And to everyone, tell me about the bi characters who made an impact on your life, I’d love to know !!!!
Okay so.
-  When I answered the anon and talked about the characters that helped me come to terms with my sexuality, I talked about two in particular. Jack Harkness from Torchwood is depicted as very promiscuous, and somewhat instable. He still meant a lot to me because a) him sleeping around was never that much of a problem, it was because he was from the future, where things were different, which I thought was refreshing and b) his instability was because of the weight of being an immortal hero. Also fanon!Dean Winchester from SPN, as an older, more macho, emotionally witholding, badass dude written as bi meant a lot to me, but he doesn’t really avoid that stereotype either. But at least they were heroes.  However, I can understand wanting bi characters that actually don’t fit that stereotype, because bi people irl aren’t all like that, even if there is nothing wrong per se about sleeping with a lot of different people, or having mental issues to struggle with. And that was a while ago and now we have more and more cool characters ! Such as :
- Rosa Diaz from Brooklyn Nine-Nine. One of the best portrayals of bisexuality on TV imho. She didn’t start out as bi, she was this tough, cool, scary but with a heart of gold cop who had a lot of other plotlines before. But then, since they saw that a lot of wlw got this vibe from her, were really into her, and the actress came out as bi herself, they decided to use this. So it was super organic, and the way they introduced the subject was true to Rosa herself ; she’s a super private person, she doesn’t like anybody knowing about her life (it’s actually a running joke and Rosa Diaz has been implied to not even be her real name). But then she is dating a woman, and struggles with her parents not understanding and her coworkers find out, help her and support her. Her gay captain is there for her in his typical stoic but hilarious way. They organize game night with her when her parents won’t anymore. We see her crushing on women and dating, but it is treated exactly as the other character’s love life, they never make a big deal out of it. She isn’t the token queer character. She says outright she is bisexual and there is a specific point about her mom not understanding it’s not a phase and thinking she’ll end up with a man anyway, which #relatable. The focus is on the team as found family. Also right now she’s dating a butch woman, which is awesome since they are so underrepresented on TV and I hope we see more of her. That show really is my comfort show, it’s still bloodly hilarious and it really transcends the format to say some really deep woke stuff too, but never in a way that feels on the nose. Everyone should watch it tbh.
- Korrasami ! Oh my god, I was so blown away when they got together. They’re two characters from the animated series Legend of Korra, they start out as rivals in love who have feelings for the same guy, but as they have to fight baddies together, they become bestest of friends, and both fall out of love with the guy. Then in season 3 and 4, their relationship becomes central to the show, as Asami stands by Korra through some really tough shit. Also, they’re both ultra badass and fight really well together. A lot of fans started reading their chemistry as romantic, but we’d never thought they’d actually go there. But the show ends with them walking into the ‘sunset’ (well, the spirit lands) together, holding hands. Now, it was never completely explicit on the show BUT they were dealing with a lot of censure from the networks and you have to be willingly obtuse not to read it as romantic. And after that the creators drew them on dates, and there is a comic series in which they are shown kissing, talking about their feelings, introducing each other to their families, etc. It made me feel so validated when it happened, and I just adore the whole ‘love triangle ditches the middle one and fall in gay love with each other’ trope. (is it a trope yet ? it should be.) It’s still a kids show at its core, but it has amazing depth and deals with some very deep shit. Korra starts off as a bit annoying but she has a really cool development, she’s a girl character we need more of - brave, dynamic but also brash and reckless and action driven in ways that are almost always exclusively shown for boys. And Asami is a more typical girly girl but she’s also a brilliant engineer and has a spine of steel and she’s also very slyly funny. They’re amazing. And the comics are super cute.
- Now there are a lot of characters who are bi/pan that I love, and are good characters in themselves, but their arcs do intersect in some ways with promiscuity and mental instability. I’m thinking about Even from Skam and all his remake variants, Magnus Bane from Shadowhunters, several characters from Black Sails, Sarah Lance and Constantine from Legends of Tomorrow, Eleanor Shellstrop from the Good Place, Bo from Lost Girl, Ilana from Broad City, Joe McMillan from Halt and Catch Fire, God/Chuck from Supernatural (lmaooooo), several characters on Penny Dreadful, or in a totally different category, Vilanelle from Killing Eve or Hannibal from the series (who are hella bad guys but it’s never linked to their sexuality, and are also incredibly compelling to watch.)
And even though these characters taken individually, I would argue, are good rep because they’re complex and layered and interesting and never one-dimensional (and watching them feels incredibly empowering at times)....it’s still a trend. I feel like when writing a character that is attracted to multiple genders, there is always this sort of...tangle of tropes that writers default to, unconsciously. Some negative and some positive. It used to be this trope of bis being villainous, instable, jealous, flaky, immature, perverted, manipulative, cheaters, amoral, greey, etc...and then it evolved into something of a reclaiming and subverting this trope. So now you feel like the Bi Character kind of has to be badass, glamorous, seductive, often superpowered or extraordinary in other ways.. And they also for multiple reasons (they’re immortal, they’re sensitive artist souls, they’re from the future, they’re psycho, they’re exccentric comic relief, they’re daring adventurers and pioneers) don’t care about social norms which allows them to sleep and fall in love with whomever. And so they tend to have those super busy romantic/sexual histories and very troubled backstories. In the past it was a bad thing, now it’s often presented as this positive, enlightened or at least fun and badass thing. They’re heroic, with big hearts, a tremendous lust for life and a cool rebellious attitude. They’re complex, dramatic, tortured. Which can be super cool, too.
But it would be nice to have more ‘normal’ bi characters. I mean, boring bisexuals need to see themselves represented too ! Our sexualities don’t give us super powers. At the same time, it is true that bisexual ppl have higher rates of mental illness, which deserves to be explored, but it would be nice if it was actually articulated and not just part of this trope.  But still. We need rep, I think, that is more grounded and varied. So I think that’s also why I read a lot of fanfic. (I was really into the idea of bi Steve Rogers for a long time, partly also because he’s both very mentally resilient, kinda boring in a good way, and very unexperienced in terms of sex/romance, which is pretty much the opposite of the trope)
- I think books, and YA in general, are a good place to find these ‘normal bis’ characters. I’m thinking in particular of Leah from Leah on the Offbeat by Becky Albertalli (from the same book series that gave us the ‘Love, Simon’ movie) which is a super sweet coming of age/romance story about a super normal teenager who just happens to be also into girls (esp her best friend) and is loud and funny and very lovable and has zero doubts about being bi. You also have Adam Parrish from the Raven Cycle, another one of my forever faves ; he has an abusive family so PTSD from that but it never feels tropey, and it’s completely detached from his sexuality. He has magic powers, too. But his character feels completely opposite to the trope. He’s hardworking, somewhat withholding, prickly (and sometimes awkward), ambitious, determined, down to earth, and has a beautiful love story with another boy. And also Jane, from Jane Unlimited by Kristin Cashore, also really cool ; she’s a nerdy, smart girl who is actually inspired by Jane Eyre who has cool adventures in a weird house where we can follow her on different paths depending on the choices she makes, several of which are love stories. And finally the main character from The Seven Husbands from Evelyn Hugo, kinda fits the trope yeahhh since she’s a super glam actress who well, has seven husbands but it’s a pretty clever deconstruction since it turns out (slight spoilers) that Evelyn is actually through most of her life faithful in heart to the same person and the rest is mostly out of necessity, and her story feels very real and raw and down to earth.
- I don’t go there yet but I really want to check out Crazy Ex-Girlfriend and Schitt’s Creek which I have read have very good bi rep. And I want to catch up on Orphan Black (Cosima and Delphine both don’t have exact labels but they’re multi-gender attracted and they’re this cool couple of scientists in a relationship that gets a happy ending). I will never forgive what they did to Lexa so I stopped watching but I do think that Clarke Griffin from The 100 is very good bi rep. Alexia from Skam France, meanwhile, is a bit of a boundary case for me because, even though she’s presented as the ‘weird one’ from the group, very colorful and liberated and exccentric, she’s still a very normal teen who’s happy and comfortable in her own skin, which is awesome.
- Disclaimer, I included characters in here that are also pan/omnisexual or don’t have a label but are attracted to several genders, for the purpose of this discussion i don’t think the difference is all that relevant at least to me (i mostly identify as bi for the sake of simplicity but tbh i could also fit under pan so i feel represented by all those characters). But I understand the importance of characters that state their identities more clearly and with pride.
- So in conclusion : there is nothing wrong with having a sexually active life or struggling mentally (even tho that one is not fun). And I do love all my badass casanova time travelling super powered bis.
But we need more bi characters that don’t fit that trope. We need bi characters in children’s shows, or that don’t have more than one relationship, or that don’t have a relationship at all, to break the tendency to always show bisexual ppl as overly sexual. We need bi characters in committed relationships to break this idea that bi characters are bound to cheat or can’t be satisified with only one person. We need bi characters that are mentally stable and successful and happy, to show that it’s possible. We need bi characters that are boring, bookish, nerdy, ordinary, clumsy, not particularly seductive, socially awkward, rule-sticklers, etc...to show that bi people are not all party animals, or doing it for attention, or to be wild, rebellious and socially progressive. It’s just a sexuality, it doesn’t say anything about your personality. Even though there are some correlations with MI or being bi might bring you in contact with more progressive ideas and to see life a bit differently, there is nothing automatic about it.
- In conclusion, reading testimonies from real people also helped me a lot. It’s a very dated but I got the book “ Bi Any Other Name: Bisexual People Speak Out “ when I was struggling with my own sexuality and it helped a lot, to read that even back then (1991) you had all sorts of regular ppl claiming to be bi and that it was not a phase or a fad or whatever.

hello! i just saw a post you reblogged about racism in femslash fandom. and i was wondering if you could give me some recommendation about tv shows with diverse lesbian chararcters??
Here’sthe post
I’m presuming by diverse you mean non-White? Thepost lists several shows already, including Queen Sugar (which I’ve seen andhighly recommend), Rosewood, The Fosters and NoTomorrow.
Others I’d recommend include:
RevolutionaryGirl Utena: A weird anime about duelling and so much more. Almost everycharacter is LGB+ and since it’s an anime almost all are Japanese. The maincharacters are a Japanese woman and an Indian Hindu woman who become a couple. However, major warnings for abuse (including rape) and incest. They’revery much shown to be wrong within the show but are examined in graphic detail. Here is a very helpful warnings guide(contains spoilers).
The‘Other’ Love Story: A webseries about two Indian girls falling in love. There are twelve episodes which go for approximately ten minutes each, so youcan binge the entire thing in about two hours. It also has a happy ending!
BlackMirror: ‘San Junipero’: With the sci-fi show Black Mirror, every episode is aseparate story, so you can watch any episode without needing to have seen anyothers. San Junipero centres around an f/f couple including a biracial Black/Whitebisexual woman and a White lesbian.
BrooklynNine-Nine: Police comedy show. In season 5, main character RosaDiaz comes out as bisexual. She’s Latina and her actressStephanie Beatriz is also bisexual (Beatriz is of Bolivian and Colombian descent). Her love interest is played by Gina Rodriguez, who is Puerto Rican American and attracted to multiple genders. The main cast also includes an AshkenaziJewish man as the protagonist, a Cuban American woman as his love interest, andtwo Black men, one of whom is gay and married. However, I can understand anyonenot wanting to watch the show due to the police themes - it’s absolutely cop propaganda.
TheLegend of Korra: A fantasy cartoon and the sequel to Avatar: The Last Airbender. All characters are Asian and/or Indigenous American. The protagonist is an Inuitbisexual woman and her love interest is a Japanese bisexual woman. Theirrelationship is made more explicit in the comic sequels, where the artist isIrene Koh, a Korean American bisexual woman. A couple of other characters havebeen revealed to be a bisexual woman and an unspecified WLW in the comics.
She-Ra and the Princesses of Power: Side characters Spinerella and Netossa are an f/f couple and Netossa is Black. It’s hoped that a few other characters, particularly the protagonist, will be canonically LGBTQ+ in future seasons.
SailorMoon: The classic magical girl anime and again, since it’s an anime almost allcharacters are Japanese. Season 3 introduces two new main characters, Harukaand Michiru (Uranus and Neptune), who are a butch/femme lesbian couple.
How toGet Away With Murder: I’m unsure if I’d really recommend this one anymore sinceI loved the first season and the first half of the second season, but I feelthe show’s really gone downhill since then. However, the protagonist Annaliseis a bisexual Black American woman and a fascinating character.
Black Sails: Show about pirates in the 1700s. One of the main characters is a biracial Black/White lesbian. The main cast also includes a White lesbian (her love interest), a White bisexual woman (another potential love interest) and the main protagonist is a White gay man. I was spoiled on who dies and who ends up together, so I’ll just say that one out of five LGBT characters dies but the others end up in happy relationships. Message me if you’d prefer to be spoiled as the bury your gays can certainly be harmful to viewers.
Easy: ‘Vegan Cinderella’ and ‘Lady Cha Cha’: As with Black Mirror, each episode of Easy is a standalone. These two are about an f/f couple, one of whom is biracial Black American/White. She’s played by Kiersey Clemons who is a WLW.
Dimension 404: ‘Bob’: As with Black Mirror, each episode is a standalone. In the episode Bob, the main character is a Taiwanese American woman married to a Black American woman. They have a child together.
Black Lightning: DC show about a Black American superhero family, including a lesbian daughter whose love interest is a Chinese American bisexual woman.
Sidetrack: A webseries about eight WLW, including a Japanese American bisexual girl, a Black American nonbinary lesbian, an Indian American lesbian, an unspecified Latine lesbian and a Muslim lesbian of unspecified ethnicity as well as three White lesbians. It does end on a slight cliffhanger and unfortunately there’s no season 2 :/
Shadowhunters: Aline Penhallow is a biracial Chinese British/White lesbian but she’s only appeared in one episode so far.
Some I plan to watch include:
One Dayat a Time: Comedy show about a Cuban American family. The teenage daughter is alesbian and her love interest is a White nonbinary lesbian. However, this is US military propaganda in the same way that B99 is cop propaganda.
AmericanGods: Based on the book of the same name by Neil Gaiman about gods in themodern world. The protagonist is a Black man and the main cast includesBilquis, a Black bisexual woman.
Brujos:12 episode webseries about LGBT Latine witches. The main characters are fourgay guys but there’s also some WLW characters.
BrownGirls: Webseries about two female friends, a Black American girl and aPakistani American and Muslim WLW.
Dyke Central: Webseries about WLWOC.
Couple-ish:Webseries about LGBT romance and friendship. One main character is a Black WLW.
195Lewis: Webseries about a Black f/f couple, one lesbian and one bisexual.
TheNewtown Girls: Webseries about four WLW, one of whom is Asian Australian.
Leslieville:Another webseries, but I couldn’t find much info about this one.
TheSlope: Webseries about an Iranian American bisexual woman (played by DesireeAkhavan who is also an Iranian American bisexual woman) and a White lesbian.
Entangled With You: Webseries about an f/f couple who I thinkare both Black American.
That’s My DJ: Webseries where the main character is an AsianCanadian lesbian.
Retail Rejects: A webseries about being a retail employee, with no straight main characters. A few of the leads are Asian Canadian.
Pot Luck: New Zealand’s first WLW webseries, with three maincharacters, one Maori and one Samoan.
The Peculiar Kind: Webseries about WLWOC.
That’s What She Said: Webseries about Asian American WLW.
Strangers: Webseries where the main character is a biracial Chinese American/White bisexual woman, as is her actress Zoe Chao.
CardcaptorSakura: Another magical girl anime. Protagonist Sakura is Japanese and bisexual, her male love interest is Chinese and bisexual, her best friend is a Japaneselesbian with a lesbian mother, and her brother is gay and in a relationship. Warning for m/f pedophilia with some of the side characters though.
Other f/fanime on my to-watch list include Sweet Blue Flowers, Maria Watches Over Us, ToMy Dearest Brother, Bloom Into You and Whispered Words.
SeonamGirls High School Investigators is a Korean show about five girls solvingmysteries. One episode involves a lesbian couple and featured the first f/fkiss on Korean TV.
Vida: Two Mexican American sisters mourn the death of their mother, who was a WLW and married to a woman. One of the sisters is a WLW too.
Others (I don’t know a huge amount about these so Ican’t say how good the representation is):
The Bold Type: Contemporary drama about three female friends who work for a magazine. One of the trio is a biracial Black/White bisexual woman and her love interest is an Iranian American Muslim lesbian. However, read this on how good the Black representation is.
Degrassi:Apparently has some WLWOC characters but there’s so much info about the show Igot confused quickly.
DoctorWho: In Season 10 the Doctor’s companion is Bill Potts, a Black Britishlesbian.
The GoodWife: A main character is an Indian American bisexual woman.
Grey’sAnatomy: Callie Torres is a Mexican American bisexual woman, a recurringcharacter in Season 2 and a main character in Seasons 3-12. Her actress Sara Ramirez is also bisexual.
Lucifer:The main cast includes Mazikeen, a bisexual Black woman. In addition, the maincharacter is a White bisexual man.
Master ofNone: A main character is a Black American lesbian, played by Lena Waithe whois also a Black American lesbian. Obvious warning for Aziz Ansari though.
Person ofInterest: Main cast includes an Iranian American WLW.
She’sGotta Have It: The main character is a Black bisexual woman.
StillStar Crossed: Romeo and Juliet retelling, about Rosaline and Benvolio afterRomeo and Juliet’s deaths. Rosaline and various other characters are Black.Unfortunately the show was cancelled after one season of seven episodes, butone of the main characters, Isabella, an Iranian woman, was confirmed to be a lesbian by heractress andwould’ve had a love interest if the show hadn’t been cancelled.
From Dusk Till Dawn: Main character Kisa is a Mexican American bisexual woman.
I’ve left off shows which kill off WLWOC or are blatantly racist in other ways (Pretty Little Liars, Orange is the New Black, Sense8, The Catch, Riverdale, Glee, True Blood, Scream Queens, The Magicians, Empire, Scream, The Handmaid’s Tale, Gotham) though I may have missed some.

malec (duh!) and 35......... no mpreg though lol
No chances of that, nonny hahahah
I hope you like what I did with the prompt. It’s fluffy fluff.
Also available on AO3.
Malec: 35: “About the baby… It’s yours.”
“Well, tell him the truth then,” Alec said, phone pressed against his ear. “Tell Simon that Magnus and I aren’t coming to movie night because his choices suck.”
“They don’t,” Isabelle answered from the other side of the line. “I know you like his mundie shows. You watched that one with the pirates all by yourself, locked in your office. Don’t try to deny it, I hacked into your tablet.”
“Black Sails is an exception and it wasn’t even Simon that suggested it. It was Maia.” Alec rolled his eyes and sighed loudly. “Let it go, Iz.”
Isabelle huffed, but she didn’t sound mad at all. “You just want to spend the night in bed with your boyfriend.”
It made Alec snort. “That is not a crime.”
“Send my best to Magnus, big bro.”
Alec smiled and pocketed his phone when Isabelle turned off the call. He looked over to Magnus, who was reading an ancient scroll, body spread over the bed. The piece of papyrus floated above him as Magnus studied the intricate ceremony he would perform in the morning for one of his clients.
As if feeling Alec’s eyes on him, Magnus looked over him. “That was fast. Only fifteen minutes to convince her we weren’t going. Did she take it well?”
“She sent you her best,” Alec said with a shrug.
“Sweet Isabelle,” Magnus said and smirked, sending the scroll floating to his bedside table. “Doesn’t she know I already have the best?”
Snorting again, Alec rolled his eyes and joined him on the bed. He sat near Magnus’ head and let his boyfriend use his lap as a pillow. “Right. I don’t think we can keep avoiding movie night, though. Jace will be texting be at any moment now. You know how he gets.”
Magnus nodded. “Inconvenient.”
“Restless,” Alec corrected him. “I don’t mind pretending that I don’t like the shows, but the lie is catching up. I can’t stand Fray talking about them all wrong. I’ll slip up one day.”
“It’s a miracle that you’ve been able to hold your tongue for so long.” Magnus chuckled. “But really, thank you. It’d break Samuel’s little heart if he knew I’m the one opposed to his taste in entertainment.”
Alec shrugged. “It’s not that bad. I like the show with the strong alcoholic detective.”
Sighing, Magnus pouted. “I guess that one is fine… I’ve just- seen it all a hundred times over. The TV shows are better, but the movies? I was there when the originals were coming out. So many remakes, recycles, homages. It tires me so. I’d rather spend the night with you than watch something I’ve seen before. Mundanes can be so predictable.”
Humming to himself, Alec played with Magnus’ hair. “Not all movies are predictable, though.”
“Even a broken clock is right twice a day. That doesn’t mean it’s working.” Magnus sighed dramatically. “The villain is the quiet person that never harmed anyone. Oh, I’m a normal teenager girl who’s in love with the wrong guy while my true love has been by my side all along. I’m a reluctant man who must face my worst fear in order to succeed. About the baby,” Magnus gasped and brought his hands to his belly, “it’s yours!”
Chuckling, Alec shook his head. “You say all that, but you love mundanes. You only think movies are boring now because you’ve seen all of them.”
Magnus didn’t even deny it. “I guess all the originality was given to the generation of shadowhunters and not the mundanes. I can’t say I’m sad about it, though.”
Alec rolled his eyes but then leaned down and kissed his boyfriend. Magnus kissed him back, hand going to the back of Alec’s neck, pulling him closer. It was a gentle gesture, a comfortable one. It mirrored the peacefulness of that moment.
When Alec pulled back, he smiled. Until he realized Magnus wasn’t smiling back. Instead, his eyes were narrowed and he regarded Alec suspiciously.
A cold drop of sweat lick Alec’s neck. He swallowed hard nervously. “W-what?”
“You stopped,” Magnus said, almost accusatorily. “You never stop unless… You want to watch your pirate show! That’s why you called your sister and canceled movie night!”
“There are only two episodes left to the season!” Alec defended himself. “Everything is converging and I need to if Flint… Come on, only two episodes! And you have your research anyway. I figured I could watch it while you read and then we could just sleep together. Just a quiet night and-”
“Oh, Alexander.” Magnus sighed, but there was a smile on his lips even so. “See what I mean? Not predictable at all.”
Alec smiled quietly and it broadened when Magnus moved his hand in a flourish, summoning the scroll back. They both moved and Alec grabbed his tablet from the backpack he kept near the bed. They settle on the bed and Alec pressed the play once he had his earplugs in place.
Midway through the first episode, Magnus leaned against his shoulders. That was when Alec knew; his plan had worked out perfectly.
He leaned back.

Fandom meme tagged by @nyx4 and @cleoselene xoxo which took me 90 years to finish but it’s HARD OKAY thinking is hard
A: Your current OTP. Jace/Alec from Shadowhunters. Apparently this makes me problematic but I don't care
B: A pairing you initially didn’t consider but someone changed your mind. This is hard because if I started watching a show because of someone they typically told me their ship ahead of time and then I was looking for it.  So I guess the closest I can come up with is that I lowkey ship Sephiroth/Genesis from Final Fantasy because of @nyx4 but I've never played the game
C: A pairing you wish you shipped, but just can't. Arthur/Merlin from Merlin.  Everyone always went so over the top with Merthur, and I shipped it for a few seconds but I never really liked Arthur so it was hard to care.
D: What was the first thing you ever contributed to a fandom? An X-Files fanfic uploaded to Gossamer titled, embarrassingly enough, "My Immortal" to which I attached my real name.  I was 14 or 15 and therefore very stupid. (I have since had this and another removed from the site, thankfully).  I also handed this fic into my English teacher to read.  Even more embarrassing.  The plot? Mulder loved Scully but he wanted to make sure that she loved him so he tried to make her jealous and when she did act jealous he was like "lol jk" and then I went into a lot of detail on a kiss they shared (THAT MY ENGLISH TEACHER READ) and then they got engaged and then they both got shot outside of Mulder's apartment for WHATEVER REASON and died.  Hence "My Immortal", because they'll be together in death.
E: Have you added anything stupid/cracky/hilarious to your fandom, if so, what? Yes, and I shall find the post I made on Livejournal so I can bring you direct to the source.  It was for Legend of the Seeker, and I got the idea to Photoshop a fake Facebook post based on an episode (I forgot where I got the idea, if I saw it in another fandom or what).  Anyway the result was this:
https://imgur.com/Zo5Bi6x
It spun of control and spawned an actual Facebook RP which is where I met the two people who tagged me in this and AIN'T LIFE REALLY CRAZY SOMETIMES???
F: What’s the longest you’ve ever been in a fandom? What fandom was it? The X-Files. I got into it when I was around 11 or 12 and was a pretty active member until I was 17 or 18. Which doesn't seem very long, but to be heavily into it, I feel it was. And then I came back around to it when the revival was announced, so it's been an on and off relationship.
G: What was your first fandom? The X-Files, probably, in terms of content-creating.  Maybe if I'm counting things like "I pretended I was Xena a lot and I would call my friend on the phone and we’d talk about Xena" then maybe Xena: Warrior Princess
H: Do you prefer real-life TV shows or animated TV shows? Real-life, hands down. I hate animation.
I: Has tumblr caused you to stop liking any fandoms, if so, which and why? Lol what -hasn't- Tumblr caused me to hate?  Tho...you know what...I've never said it on this hellsite for fear of reprisal, but I'm going to do it. Tumblr turned me off Sansa Stark back in season 2 or so.  There was so many posts where people were so aggressive about unfollowing and hating people who didn't like Sansa and it got so irritating I started to dislike Sansa by association. So congrats, Tumblr, you played yourself. Also, this site turned me off The Musketeers around season 3. So much Aramis hate, kind of soured me since I watched the show for Santiago Cabrera. And then that association soured me on Santiago, so. Thanks.
J: Name a fandom you didn’t care/think about until you saw it all over tumblr. I'm going to say Teen Wolf. It was all over the place when it was first airing and people either loved it or thought it was ridiculous so I started watching it finally and it was ridiculously great. But then they killed off Allison and ruined my life :)))))
K: How do you feel about the other people in your current fandom(s). I don't really know what my current fandoms are - I'm kind of really into Shadowhuters rn but not in a "making things" sort of way. Anyway, I have heard some very terrible things about this fandom so I am wary.
L: Your favorite fanartist/author gives you one request, what do you ask for? I don't read fanfic and I'm not into fanart so.
M: A person who got you into a fandom and what fandom they pulled you in to. @nyx4 again. Got me into watching Sons of Anarchy. I had tried previously and got about 10 minutes in and couldn't stand it but she said it got better so I powered through and then I was into it.
As for non-TV and movie stuff, @tsukinosusagis got me into a shitton of music and like he said a few days ago “Remember when Lights created our friendship??? ICONIC”
N: Your favorite fandom (for the people; not the thing you fangirl over). Legend of the Seeker on its Livejournal days, back in 2009 and 2010 were my favorite. Nothing on tumblr.hell is a good fandom. All of it should burn.
O: Choose a song at random, what ship does it remind you of? Lmao I'm really bad at this.  I suffer trying to pick songs for ships so idk
P: Invent a random AU for any fandom (we always need more ideas). SHADOWHUNTERS PIRATE AU. Also, it's not an AU, but I have a very elaborate setup in my head for an episode of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia where the gang is convinced the bar is haunted and the name of the ep is "Paddy's Pub: The Most Haunted Bar in Philadelphia"
Q: A ship you’ve abandoned and why. Cersei/Jaime because Jaime is a rapist. Also made me stop watching GOT because I was really mostly watching for Cersei and Jaime but I didn’t wanna see Jaime anymore so
R: A pairing you ship that you don’t think anyone else ships. Morgana/Lancelot from Merlin. I'm sure there's a lot in the actual Arthuriana stuff that people ship, but I'm just talking about the show. I was only able to find maybe 1 gifset and 2 fics about these two.  Granted, I only shipped them because SANTIAGO CABRERA AND KATIE MCGRATH so maybe nobody else cared.
S: What's a headcanon you have? I don't really have any of these.
T: What are your favorite male/male ships or female/female ships? Jace/Alec (Shadowhuters), Aramis/Porthos (The Musketeers), Red/Snow (Once Upon a Time), Rizzoli/Isles (Rizzoli & Isles), Eliot/Quentin (The Magicians), Penny/Quentin (The Magicians), Xena/Gabrielle (Xena), Mac/Dennis (It's Alway Sunny), Willow/Tara (BTVS)
U: What are your favorite male/female ships? Mulder/Scully (The X-Files), Cesare/Lucrezia (The Borgias), Richard/Nicci (Legend of the Seeker), Richard/Cara (Legend of the Seeker), Gemma/Tig (Sons of Anarchy), Mitchell/Annie (Being Human), Spike/Dru (BTVS), Jim/Pam (The Office), Jane/Michael (Jane the Virgin)
V: Do you have any 3-way ships? If so, what? Yeah, Darken Rahl/Cara/Dahlia from Legend of the Seeker. And it has to be a threeway, because any two of these characters together I don't ship but the 3 together? YES YES YES
W: 5 favorite characters from 5 different fandoms. Bo Dennis (Lost Girl) Ilithyia (Spartacus) Dana Scully (The X-Files) Quentin Coldwater (The Magicians) Gemma Teller (Sons of Anarchy)
X: 3 OTPs from 3 different fandoms. Why would ya ask me this question when you asked for my favorite ships above, bro?
But I guess
Mulder/Scully (The X-Files) Richard/Nicci (Legend of the Seeker) Jim/Pam (The Office)
Y: A fandom you’re in but have no ships from. Most of them - like even if I do have a ship, it's pretty lowkey?  A lot of the above are lowkey.  But I'll say Black Sails.
Z: What's a ship that you want to ship publicly, but everyone on tumblr hates it so you keep your mouth shut about it? Lol Jalec I guess? Like I'm saying it right now, but I'm not gonna go out there and go big with it because lots of annoying people out there.

Your turn: Rank all the sortings according to their sexiness.
Before getting to the combinations-
IMO, the sexiest secondaries are, in order: Lion > Rapid Fire Bird > Snake > Regular Bird > Bookkeeper Badger > Courtier Badger. Lion and Snake primaries are about as sexy to me (it's about internal primaries!! Maybe Lion a little more. Snake is more ~romantic than sexy idk); then Bird, then Badger. Now xD
I elaborated on the top 5 here so I won't be doing it again.
1. Snake Lion. Some of the sexiest members: Meg Masters (SPN), Dutch and Aneela (Killjoys), Cersei Lannister (GOT), Anne Bonny (Black Sails).
2. Double Snake. Selina Kyle (DCU), Bela Talbot (SPN), Nikita Mears (Nikita), Miranda Barlow (Black Sails), Kenna (Reign).
3. Lion Snake. Elizabeth Swann (POTC), Jasmine (Disney), Laila Rose (@nectargrapes's The Essence of The Equinox).
4. Lion Bird. Ruby (SPN), Jesse Flores (TSCC), Adelle Dewitt (Dollhouse), Lola (Reign).
5. Snake Bird. Max (Black Sails), Echo (The 100), Naomi (The Expanse), (dark!)Kaia Nieves (SPN).
6. Double Lion. We are DAMN sexy. Internal primary intensity, Lion secondary bullheadedness, capacity for improvisation, commitment to higher callings. What's not to like, idc xDD. Rosalee (Underground), Rikki (H20), Allison Argent (Teen Wolf), Kisa (FDTD).
7. Bird Lion. Again, Lion secondary? Sexy. And that free thinking/truth seeking nature of Birds combined with that can be *chef's kiss*. Raven Reyes (The 100), Harley Quinn (DC).
8. Double Bird. They are not higher because I can't think of almost any sexy Double Bird... but the one I can think of, Rowena MacLeod, is sexier than anyone has ever been, ever. Note that down. Rapid Fire Bird, of course.
9. Bird Snake. It's a combination that's given us many sexy people. Priya (Dollhouse), Darla (Buffyverse), Camille (Shadowhunters), Inej (SAB).
10. Lion Badger. The highest a Badger secondary can aspire in my ranking as long as it comes accompanied by a damn great Lion primary. Tahani (TGP), Madi (Black Sails), Fire (Seven Kingdoms series). HM to Castiel, who I'm not at all attracted to because he's very dude-shaped (I did feel THINGS when he wore a female vessel that one time though), but who is objectively sexier the more unhinged shit he does; see swallowing a bunch of souls and becoming God or manipulating an angel (while dripping blood over his open shirt ofc), stealing and swallowing his essence, then killing him -both these instances got called sexy IN CANON, because the characters of SPN are Like That.
11. Badger Lion. They get to avoid the down 5 (?) thanks to that sweet Lion secondary. Though tbh with some exceptions, like Paige (Charmed), Faith (Buffyverse) or Shaw (POI), I tend to see them more as cute and crush-worthy than sexy. Claire Novak (SPN), Idelle (Black Sails), Daisy Johnson (AOS).
12. Badger Snake. The Snake secondary can be REALLY sexy, and they have two of my foremost crushes among them: Emori (The 100), and maybe Lana Lang (Smallville). But the rest of them are on thin ice!
13. Snake Badger. Most of the ones I can think of are guys; I like Tiana, though (Disney). But I see them as more sweet and caring than sexy, yeah.
14. Bird Badger. I tend to think of them as too mellow, maybe unfairly. M'gann Morzz (Young Justice) could pull off sexy unhinged shit though, good for her. Billie the Reaper (Supernatural) is another good one.
15. Badger Bird. Idek these guys. Where are they? Poison Ivy is the hottest one by far, certainly.
16. Double Badger. Unfortunate sorting for me. Avasarala (The Expanse) and the Maroon Queen (Black Sails) can get it, so I guess it sometimes mixes well with hard power for me. Greer (Reign) was at her sexiest when she had that too (Kenna would agree).

[Ao3]
Part five of the BAMF Prince of Hell High Warlock series
Main Characters: Magnus Bane
Relationships: Magnus Bane/Alec Lightwood
Summary: Magnus looked up. “Oh, since you asked,” he said, and Alec turned around to hide a smile. “Your grip is too low.”
Jace blinked, twice in quick secession and actually brought one of his axes up to eye level to check his grip on it. After a second, he shook his head and lowered his weapon. With a smirk Alec knew too well, he said, “and I suppose you’re an expert on battle axes then?”
Magnus smiled.
Adrenaline was a hell of a drug, Alec thought as he ducked Jace’s swipe at his head. It would make an untrained fighter shaky and unsteady, but with the two of them…
Weapons flashed quickly through the air, colliding together with a loud clangs of metal, the blows vibrating up their arms. It brought a grin to Alec’s face.
He twisted out of the way of Jace’s upswing, shoving him the chest to make the axe whistling towards his head go wide. Alec kicked out, his boot meeting Jace’s knee, and he sent his already off-balanced brother tumbling to the ground.
A wolf whistle echoed through the courtyard. Magnus leant against the doorway, his ankles crossed, and an amused smile on his face. “Very nice,” he said.
Alec’s smile grew. “Hey,” he said, taking both his swords in his left hand as he headed over to Magnus. He caught Jace’s “thanks brother,” but ignored it in favor of pressing a soft kiss to Magnus’ lips.
“Sorry,” he said, “I’m sweaty.”
Magnus hummed. “I can see that,” he said. “It’s a good look for you.”
Jace groaned. “No flirting,” he said as he shoved himself to his feet and retrieved one of his axes. “We’re supposed to be training.”
Alec waved him off. “What are you doing here?” he asked Magnus instead. “I thought you had a client.”
“Oh I did,” Magnus said. “He called to cancel, something about the FBI. I wouldn’t worry about it. Since I was suddenly free, I thought I’d stop by.”
“Oh, well, if you wanted to wait for me to shower, we could go somewhere,” Alec said.
Jace sighed dramatically and twirled one of his battle axes with a fake pout on his face. “Sure, sure,” he said, “abandon me for your boyfriend, I’ll be fine.”
Alec was about to tell his brother, in no certain terms, to fuck off when Magnus patted him on the chest. “Go finish your training session, I don’t have anywhere to be. And, besides,” in a snap of his fingers and a flash of blue light, Magnus was holding a book about twice the size of Alec’s bicep that was definitely written in a language he could not understand. “I have some light reading to catch up on.”
Alec watched him make his way over to one of the stone benches in the courtyard until Jace cleared his throat loudly. He flipped his axe in the air and caught it with a pointedly raised eyebrow. Alec rolled his eyes, but switched the grip on his swords.
The flat of his blade hit Jace’s leg with a decisive thwap and Alec let out a little laugh as Jace sighed in frustration. In four boughts, he had gotten three winning hits to Jace’s one, and his little brother was starting to get a bit frustrated.
“Damn it,” Jace said, his lips twisted downward in something reminiscent of what Alec remembered of his truly epic childhood sulks.
A snort. Jace and Alec turned to look at Magnus, who turned a page in his book.
“You got something to say?” Jace asked, frowning.
Magnus looked up.
Gently, he closed his book and set it on the bench beside him, and stood, slowly. He slipped his slick black jacket over his shoulders and tossed it haphazardly on the bench.
“Expert is not an easy word to define,” Magnus said, as he reached a hand out. “But I certainly think you have some things to learn.”
When Jace didn’t offer them up, Magnus simply reached out and plucked both of the battle axes straight from his hands. As Jace stared at him, stunned, Magnus twirled both the axes in his hands and shook his head.
“This is excessive,” he said. “This is made entirely out of metal, is there any reason for that at all?” He didn’t wait for an answer. “Oh, and the leather grip, don’t even get me started.”
Jace finally found his voice. “What’s -- I mean, do you really have any room to complain about being excessive?”
Magnus shot him a disappointed look over the axe he was inspecting. Alec put a hand over his mouth to muffle his laughter. “It’s true I have an appreciation the finer things in life; like that coat -- it was $2000 -- and your brother, but when it comes to weapons, I prefer practical over… cool.”
Jace floundered and Alec tried to hide his faint blush, but Magnus just sighed in irritation. “Still,” he said, “I suppose they’ll have to do.”
He flipped one of the battle axes over in his hand, grasping the hated leather grip, and, with in rippling of muscles, threw it. It whistled inches past Jace’s head and embedded itself in a large clumping of vines crawling their way up the stone wall.
Alec and Jace both turned to stare at the axe. “You’re not going to use both?” Alec asked faintly. His own grip was more slack than he carried to admit around the hilts his duel swords.
There was a brief flash of blue light and a soft pop. Alec turned around to see Magnus had magically pried the leather grip off the battle axe, and had compensated with a pair of leather gloves. Alec distantly wondered if he could call that cheating.
“Oh, no,” Magnus said as he sliced the axe through the air. “I won’t need it.”
Jace shot Alec a look that definitely meant good fucking luck, bro and backed away. Alec took a deep breath and readied himself and he blades. Magnus shot him a smile that was definitely cheating, and took a stance himself.
Alec attacked first. It was a lot strike, slower than usual, and Magnus stepped out of the way easily. He shot Alec a massively unimpressed look. Alec smiled and attacked again.
A sweeping blow towards Magnus head, followed by a harder one directly to the chest. Magnus ducked and then, in the blink of an eye, he was standing inside Alec’s guard. Before he could stop it, Alec’s sword guard crashed down on Magnus’ raised wrist. A flash of orange light, the sword shuttered to a stop, and Alec could feel a sharp point of cold metal pressed against his throat.
“No going easy on me,” Magnus murmured.
Alec nodded dumbly, tearing his gaze away from Magnus’ mouth.
“You used magic,” Jace said loudly. “That’s cheating.”
Magnus backed away from Alec. “I have my magic, you have your runes and another axe,” he twirled his axe. “Again,” he said.
Angel, but Magnus was fast. His grip was at least an inch higher than Jace’s, and he swung the battle axe with speed enough to match Alec’s faster short swords.
He deflected one of Alec’s strikes and twisted, hooking the blade with battle axe’s pike and pulled, sending the blade clattering to the ground. He dodged out of the way of Alec’s answering swipe, spun and leapt to his feet.
Magnus brought his axe above his head to strike and Alec moved to counter, but in a vicious twist, Magnus feinted. He brought the axe down in a blow that would have ripped across Alec’s chest had Magnus not stopped the blade inches away.
Magnus looked up at Alec and flashed him a smug smirk before twirling the axe and backing off a few steps.
“Oh come on,” Jace said. “You’re going easy on him.”
Alec wiped sweat away from his brow. “Not that time I wasn’t,” he panted.
“It is supposed to be your lesson,” Magnus said as he raised an eyebrow at Jace. “Care for some hands on learning?”
Jace smirked. “Hell yeah.”
He hurried over and took the swords from Alec’s hands as he shrugged helplessly at Magnus. Alec would be a little more apologetic if he didn’t already know what the outcome would be.
He was right. Magnus gave Jace the dignity of dodging and parrying his first five blows before he blocked a particularly strong one with a shield of magic. Jace’s lip curled up in frustration and he back up a step, and volted directly over the shield.
Magic glowed bright at Magnus’ heel and he took two steps forward, sliding on his knees behind Jace as Alec’s brother sailed straight over his head. By the time Jace landed, Magnus was already on his feet, axe whirling through the air.
The sound the flat side of the battle axe made when it connected with Jace’s shoulder made Alec wince and Jace’s shout echoed around the courtyard. Jace stumbled forward, utterly off balance because of his jump and Magnus’ blow. By the time Jace got his feet underneath him again, the razor sharp edge of the axe’s blade was hovering mere centimeters away from his temple.
“Lesson learned, Shadowhunter?” Magnus asked.
Jace raised his hands slowly, and, reluctantly, nodded.
“Excellent,” Magnus said, and promptly dropped his axe on the ground. He turned with a flourish and extended a hand toward Alec. “I think your training session is done then?”
Alec laughed and strode forward to take his hand and lace their fingers together. “Oh absolutely.”

Escapade Dance Party Vids
These are the vids we showed at the Escapade Con dance party. They were chosen to be OT3 (this year’s theme), slash (the overall topic of the con), good to dance to, or in fandoms people specifically asked for. (We ran out of time for the last three though.)
I found these by searching AO3′s ‘fanvids’ tag, looking at Festivids and VividCon, and some Youtube searching. Boy do I wish more vidders would post to AO3 and label their stuff clearly. Youtube is a pain to search.
