A really dumb vent but tbh you don't have to feel empathy, guilt, sympathy, compassion, remorse, etc. to be a good person. You can feel none of these and still decide to do the right thing. In fact people who DO feel those things and STILL continue to do horrible things are worse imo.

So today's random take: you can judge a business by how it does its pizza parties.
Not in the "capitalistic hellscape thinks it can distract its workers from poor pay and poor work conditions through pizza parties" sense. In the "is management aware of everyone's dietary needs and restrictions and is willing and able to compensate for it" sense.
I worked in one place which prided itself on its support of "diversity" and "inclusiveness" and then repeatedly served food at different events without ever adding labels. Do you have religious restrictions? Health restrictions? You're better off bringing your own food. One person was terrified of dying due to her nut allergy and never knowing what was in ANY of the foods.
Imagine working somewhere boasting about its inclusiveness and celebrating with a pizza party, and you're standing in a corner, smiling awkwardly, empty-handed, because you can't eat a single thing there. What the hell. We're doing a Halloween thing at work now, and someone who was helping decorate stated that she couldn't eat any of the snacks she was putting out due to dietary restrictions. I asked what the restrictions were and she told me between apologies and assurances that I didn't need to worry about it. To hell with that! Imagine putting together a celebration with the full awareness that you're excluding a portion of the office for no real reason!
In one office, we made a point of having a variety of treats available so everyone had an option, including healthier items and gluten-free items and vegan items. If you made something at home for the office, you brought in the list of ingredients so no one needed to worry about dying eating a tasty snack.
This is easy stuff. This should be common sense stuff. Is there a religious holiday coming up which involves fasting? Maybe have a party which focuses more on non-edible forms of entertainment. If it's a small work environment, it should be even easier to figure out dietary restrictions!
It's amazing how many inclusive places never think to do this. It's awful how many people apologize for having restrictions or different diets. To hell with all of that! It doesn't take much more time or money to create an inclusive environment. Places shouldn't call themselves inclusive or say anything about "teams" if they can't even figure out that half of their office can't eat the offered pepperoni pizza.

Short-haired contestant’s victory at Miss France 2024 sparked bizarre “diversity” debate
The Miss France 2024 pageant concluded in scandal after a contestant with short hair won for the first time in its 103-year history.
Eve Gilles, 20, from Nord-Pas-de-Calais in northern France, was declared the winner on Saturday night and claimed it was a positive result for “diversity” in the pageant.
“We’re used to seeing beautiful Misses with long hair, but I chose an androgynous look with short hair. No one should dictate who you are… every woman is different, we’re all unique.”
Plenty of people online commented that Gilles was following the rich tradition of French short hair fashion, from Mistinguett to Coco Chanel. Others described her victory as a “woke” choice by the contest jury, with one X user trying to argue that the result was based “no longer [on] beauty… [but] on inclusiveness.”
The competition final attracted a peak audience of 9.1 million people on TV, meanwhile the hashtag #MissFrance2024 became one of the most popular on X.

Include all beings in your horizon
Thinking about inclusion, we should broaden our horizons to welcome, take care of, and love all beings and their uniqueness in being all equal.

I don't know who needs to hear this but you can (and should) add alt text on pics and gifs here
See:
Tumblr media
This is a pic with alt text. How to do that :
#1
Tumblr media
#2
Tumblr media
#3
Tumblr media
Et voilà !
(There's alt text on all the pictures here)
As to why you should add alt text:
As the above picture shows: adding alternative text makes images accessible to people using screen readers.
Simple as that, you bring more people in.
They don't have to scroll through their dashboard occasionally (/s) hearing "image image - so true lmao - image image image image" which is no fun at all, right.
I've got to admit I wasn't really thinking about that before but being on Twitter has made me more aware of this issue by setting a reminder, and visually impaired people explaining often why they need it. I try to not forget to add it now - and coming back here I often see people adding the description in the body of the post (if at all), but you can actually add it as actual alt text in the picture.
Plus a good thing is on twitter you can add up to 1000 caracters, on Tumblr you can add 4096 - which is amazing
It's easy & quick to do and if you don't know what to say in the alt text it's actually simple : describe what you see, and what you meant to show, tell what's the purpose of the pic if needed. I know there's informative threads on Twitter about alt text, I'm sure there's some informative posts here too. 😊

The consensus on Tumblr seems to be that the way I approach my Jewishness is incorrect. Not me, personally, as I haven't said very much about it, but people like me who do Judaism the way I do. No one cares about my opinion but I'd like to discuss it anyway.
Here, and in "real life" I know a lot of Jewish people tend to take offense to the Christianification of winter. They point to just how many holy days and festivals of all faiths there are at this time of year that warrant nary a mention and definitely no days off from work. I used to not think about it too much, satisfied to have Christmas eve and Christmas off even if I don't celebrate it (okay, my ex wife is Southern Baptist so I was celebrating it tangentially in so much as I was present for it) but given the alarming rise in antisemitism lately I wonder how acceptable it is to be so complacent.
I have a lot of friends of different faiths and have always just wandered around from invitation to invitation, soaking up and appreciating as many traditions and cultures as possible. At their core they are all the same, like the people that celebrate them are...driven by love and desire for connection above anything else. I know I've been lucky to have been able to cultivate friendships with excellent people, who are open minded, curious, and inclusive.
As my daughter's birth gets closer, I've been thinking a lot about how my family's faith will factor into her life. My wife is not religious so much as she has a bent towards Eastern philosophy and therefore has absolutely no preference on whether our daughter is raised Jewish or not. But, so many generations of my family in Eastern Europe had to hide their Jewishness for fear of persecution, extermination. There are far fewer of us than there would have been had Hitler not come into power...and my Papa was very fond of saying "they've called us cockroaches, we should SHOW THEM and outlast EVERYTHING." He was petty about literally nothing else, only that. Look at us, surviving. I'll show you, we will show you.
So, while I'm happy to live and let live...there are so many things about Christmas I find to be joyful, I think I'm taking a cue from the Chosen People of Tumblr and deciding it's not right or fair that I should be expected to let Christian tradition be the only thing the people around me ever see. I haven't been pretending to be Christian but perhaps I have not been Jewish enough, have been brushing off honest curiosity where I should have been opening up more. I should be insisting more often to be allowed to openly exist.
The most important thing I know about people, the thing that informs everything that they do, is that they just want to be seen and be loved for who they are. Be respected, appreciated, and share their lives with the people around them. I can't help but think this is perhaps the best season for it, with just so many things to learn from so many people. All I can do is start, and hope some people follow. Now, to get a menorah for the front desk...

Vent?
Hot take: intention doesn't matter. Doing a good deed doesn't have to be because you care or whatever. Doing things because you care is entirely valid but if you do it because of your own self interest, it's the same outcome so long as it's mutually beneficial.
NTs need to get off of their bullshit and just accept that.

Do we think that there was a way to make the “Man or Woman?” brothel scene more gender neutral, or would they just have to take it out and/or completely rework it?

I don’t write a lot of articles, however, I am in the process of writing a novel about 2 young boys, a ships boy who serves on HMS Victory and a cadet at a Naval Academy in Portsmouth, due to both of them going through a traumatic event and being connected through time by an old naval dirk, their consciousness’s pass to one another leading to them both ending up out of their time. The story revolves around how they as individuals adapt too their surroundings, how their friends, teachers, officers and family cope with the sudden changes in these two characters, who remain unchanged physically. The knowledge that both of them carry and how it directly affects the people they know or interact with over the coming months and the peril it places them both in.
Tumblr media
Now I’m in a bit of a dilemma at the moment, I have stuck to the physical characteristics and personality traits of the people I know and upon whom ive based my characters on, however, with the exception of the crew of the Victory, which was multi cultural and consisted of men and boys of many different nationalities, i haven’t included any people of a different skin tone then me. It wasn’t a conscious decision, it was just based around the people i have met over time and I thought might bring colour of a different kind because of their character.
Here’s my concern, I have had to really focus on events of the Victory’s Log’s, News Paper reports from the time, Relevant historical records and research, to ensure the book isn’t criticised for being factual incorrect by the people who love historic naval novels which are based on actual events, hence in many ways my characters choose themselves. In saying that, in the modern character’s path as a cadet in Portsmouth, I have not defined many of the physical characteristic’s of the adults he interacts with, with the exception of their gender (Male/Female) they are not defined, so if this gets published, there is room for people to assign there own thoughts to them. They are by no means bland, but it is their actions that define them, not the colour of their skin, hence to me this is the focal point. His friends are described in detail, however, one of whom I’ve based on Squirrel from Cursed and all his nuances, he just fits.
Tumblr media
I’m concerned I may be criticised, because i have not been inclusive enough, not addressed gender issues..etc, however, this is my story, my novel, should I be governed by the need to conform, or should I just keep the characters as they are? Historically relevant to the period and the location and let their personal attributes, traits, character and how they speak and treat others lead you to your own conclusions about them?
I’d really like to know your thoughts.. stick to my guns.. or not?

I forgot how awesome people truly are
rather if they are traditional or not
if they are male, female or neither
