There is at times a (completely understandable!) assumption in SV fandom that "Peerless Cucumber", infamous online commenter, represents Shen Yuan's truest self in a way.

But while I get where that's coming from, I think the narrative of SV ultimately refutes that notion. Peerless Cucumber is the guy who called for Shen Jiu to be punished even worse when PIDW was just a novel, and yet when it's real, he not only wants to avoid that fate for himself, but he also feels more pity & compassion for Shen Jiu too. Peerless Cucumber thought that Luo Binghe's level-up arc was cool, but Shen Yuan doesn't want to put his disciple through that, even knowing that he will come out stronger at the end of it. Peerless Cucumber was deeply mired in the toxic macho heteronormative internet culture at the time, but Shen Yuan is himself a queer person whose suffering is more than incidentally attached to his internalized homophobia.

I think in its way, the Peerless Cucumber persona is as much of a mask as the Shen Qingqiu one. Being vitriolic and petty can be fun, but it isn't a truer version of Shen Yuan, it's just exaggerating different aspects of his personality for a different audience and in a different direction.

This might seem like an "old man yells at cloud" situation, but it's just wild growing up and being told how dangerous distracted driving is - how, at highway speeds, you can traverse the length of a football field (100 yards, 91 meters) in a matter of seconds - how one split second sending a text while driving could result in a potential fatal crash, and then getting on the road as a driver and being surrounded by billboards. Their entire purpose is to catch one's attention, so they're lining major roads, which tend to be highways. How is it that you're told how important it is to never be distracted while driving, but still being advertised to?

At best, this type of advertising is an eyesore to pedestrians and motorists and a general waste of electricity to light it, and at worst, it is an active danger considering they are there to advertise and therefore, must catch people's attention.

I'm not even against advertising in theory, but this particular mode bothers me so much and I hate how pervasive it is - especially in large cities or highways.

the reason why Luo Binghe and Shen Yuan can't attic wife each other in there house and never leave is that they don't have internet or anything else around to help keep them moving. I think we chalk too much of Shen Qingqiu being a super productive person post transmigration often too much to reading into things and treating his unreliable narration as fact.

But like, what is he supposed to do all if not actually go outside and talk to people and get a job. Luo Binghe needs to do things other than be a housewife for his own sanity so he doesn't cabin fever. He can't live focusing his day around a singular person being in the room its not healthy and would drive him insane. These are not overly productive constantly doing things people. These are people doing things to make sure they aren't malaise slugs feeling nothing in their day to day drudgery.

This is just what a healthy post/pre internet mental state kinda looks like.

there's a bizarre comment i read as a kid i keep puzzling over years later. it wasn't on any of my stuff, no, it was before my era of posting - it was for a webcomic artist who had a really beautiful art style and was really popular. in my memory, the comment went something like this:

"you are clearly a very talented artist, but why are wasting all your time on drawing when you live in such a beautiful place like australia? put the pencil down and go live your life!"

if i am not misremembering, this was from a middle aged man (of course). it's possible he also had something in there implying that as an older, more experienced person he knows what matters most in life. just really the most condescending you can possibly be towards a young woman sharing her hard work for free with the internet.

obviously, the most fascinating aspect of this comment is the "you live in a beautiful place and it's your sworn duty to enjoy it to the fullest" aspect. wouldn't it be nice if we were all free to frolick in the fields instead of having to do anything else forever? i suspect this sentiment comes from a mix of jealousy and presumably americacentrism (or the UK/europe equivalent thereof if that's the case) - a feeling that someone gets to LIVE in a place that's on your travel wish list and they're WASTING IT. but... they live there. that's where their life is. they can't spend every second of it as a tourist. i also live in a certified Beautiful Place and like, i love that for me! i also love drawing. i have the time, you know? my life contains multitudes. i think there is a certain childishness to the thought that people living in Other Places are living some sort of Special Experience and not just, their daily life at home.

the other fascinating aspect is how artistic pursuit especially seems to be a waste of time. what about jobs? what about boring, unfulfilling work? plenty of people doing those in australia, too. i suspect some of this attitude is a bit of a generation thing, maybe specifically Middle Aged Man thing, to whom drawing seems like a frivolous girl hobby there's no need for, even though this artist was creating multiple comics that an audience across the globe was enjoying. the way people perceive artists has always been interesting to me - there's simultaneously a belief that Talent will get you really super rich, and a belief that art is Useless and won't and shouldn't get you anything - or maybe the belief is that only artists making "ugly modern art" get paid (too much) and that artists with "real talent" must suffer nobly through life on a pittance and only become appreciated after their death. people want to enjoy art but not respect people who have worked to develop their skill. obviously these are very generalised statements that are not representative of Everyone - they're just some attitudes i keep seeing on a grander scale, not necessarily from individuals.

anyway i don't know why i was reminded of that comment but i haven't stopped thinking about it

Its my fault for listening to medical mystery and true crime stories but i stg every story from a white american perspective is like

"i was living alone, so i obviously lived in fear for my life from 4pm until morning. I hate the 'but the children' thing when it comes to people encouraging censorship in fandom spaces. If the parents of the children dont want their kids to see certain content there are plenty of parental controls on damn near every device/app store that will give them the ability to block that type of stuff from their kids veiw! Criticize certain tropes all you want, I do it all the time, but at the end of the day I will just block people that write things I'm uncomfortable with and move on with my day because for these types of spaces to exist without constant changing of the rules and a consistent decrease of what kind of content we can create, censorship cannot be a part of it. A lot of people dont wanna hear it, but it's true!
