Over the course of this bracket, he has faced off against many worthy bards, including an inter-dimensional storyteller, multiple irl musical artists, an immortal musically talented war criminal, and a muppet, and he proved himself to be the most sparkliest of them all.

Turkkila & Versluis: “We Want To Differentiate Ourselves From Previous Years”

Earlier this month, ice dance couple Juulia Turkkila and Matthias Versluis skated in the show L'Apprenti Sorcier (The Sorcerer's Apprentice) organized in Champéry, Switzerland. The choreography was done by Salome Brunner and Stéphane Lambiel. The Finns were the only ice dancers in the show. How did they end up there?

“Last year, I edited the music for Deniss Vasiljevs' free program The Lion King,” Matthias says. This season, Matthias has done ten different music cuts for Lambiel's students.

“Towards the end of May, Stéphane asked us if we would be interested in joining the show. It was a great honor,” he continues.

“We were with an amazing group of skaters, some of the world's best. It's unique to skate with a live pianist,” Juulia shares.

In the show, Juulia and Matthias performed to Franz Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsody No 2. They presented wonderful lifts and spectacular movements. The international audience was impressed by the couple's soulful performance.

Finland's top couple has been training hard throughout the summer.

“Early May, we went to Rome for new choreography. In June, we had some vacation time and in July, we went to the Czech Republic for five weeks of summer camp,” Juulia says.

The rhythm dance theme for the 2024–25 season is Social Dancing from the 1950s–1970s.

“We chose music from the 1960s because we suspect that many teams will use disco from the 70s,” Juulia explains.

The pair found a go-go jive song that they immediately liked, and combined it with James Brown's classic I Got You.

“We wanted high energy music that the audience can recognize. There is no slow part in our rhythm dance. It is challenging,” Juulia reflects.

The couple's free dance is the Argentine Tango La Rubia Mirella, which is based on true events. The story was introduced to the couple by an Argentinian tango dancer, who worked with them on and off the ice.

“The beginning is quite soft, but the end is really strong. We want to show that we can be strong and fast. The language of movement is traditional tango, but the program is not built from typical dance movements,” Matthias shares.

Juulia plays a strong woman initially, but is used and abused by men. Matthias plays the role of a villain. The ending is dramatic.

“When there is a clear story, you have to bring in more emotion and drama,” Juulia states.

The pair's programs will first be seen in the Challenger Series competitions, followed by the Grand Prix events in Finland and China.

“We are aiming for medal positions in both GP competitions, and thus a place in the GP final. We are trying to collect world ranking points so that we can start competitions in the right groups during the Olympic season,” the couple says in unison.

With a fierce tango, Juulia and Matthias will be taking a different path this upcoming season, changing their image as classical lyrical skaters.

“We want to differentiate ourselves from previous years. A new combination lift is in the works for the free program, and the choreographic elements will be totally in character with the tango,” Juulia sums up.

Thoughts on Space Babies and The Devil's Chord, in no particular order:

So we agree that the overarching storyline for this season is stories becoming real, yeah? Starts with invoking folklore at the end of the universe, is solidified with the Toymaker and his rules of play, used heavily in The Church on Ruby Road, and now children's fairytales and musicals? Fascinated to see where this is going!

Generally ridiculously camp and bonkers and you know what, I goddamn missed that. It had whimsy. It had space babies and musical battles! It was fun and ridiculous and just. Felt good, man.

And it also had far-future dystopias and reproductive horror and slow starvation and suffocation and refugees and a timeline of depression and nuclear winter simply to create the universe's biggest aeolian harp so, you know. Doctor Who is back, baby!

Space Babies

Okay the episode was pretty fun and, at times, sweet (they saved the monster!) but oy the CGI/voice acting for the babies was… not great XD;;

Rani reference!

RTD detractors: "Ew, fart jokes with the Slitheen, so immature." RTD, writing an elaborate snot joke that ends with a colossal projectile shart: "Watch this :D"

Okay yes the projectile shart to get the space station moving is one thing, but, uh. How is it going to stop? XD;;

The nanny filter made me giggle each time.

I actually had to go back and check because I was squinting at the readout trying to work out what's weird and somehow failed a spot check and missed the fact that it had started snowing. Good observational skills, self. Anyway, the snow is definitely a Message. (Is it snow? Like I agree that it's connected with the day Ruby was born, but is what's falling in the church scene snow to begin with?)

The Devil's Chord

Oooh, a Pantheon! Love a Pantheon. There's mention of the One Who Waits, speculation on whether 'the Oldest One' was there the day Ruby was born, we already have the Toymaker -> Maestro line, so maybe we'll be getting others? Also, the way Maestro phrased something earlier was fascinating too - "the Lord Temporal who sealed my father in salt". The Lord Temporal. There's been a lot of references to how the Doctor isn't just a Time Lord, maybe they're part of the Pantheon too, as the personification of time? Regeneration and Time Lord society all coming from this base primordial being?

Anyway I goddamn adore Maestro.

I wonder if we'll get Susan at the end of this season? (See: last link of this section!)

Semi-related but Ruby saying she was born in 2004 gave me a Crisis. Rose was 19 in 2005 and born the same year as me. Yeah okay I am good with that! Martha born in either 1986 or 1984, yep, fine, all checks out. But now there's a companion who was born when I was already an adult how is that legal.

"I thought it was non-diegetic!!" I have so many questions. The walls are getting thin. Yeah, especially the fourth! (Random thought: Doctor Who official ARG?)

Missed opportunity to play The Devil Went Down To Georgia or The Devil's Trill, although we did get Danse Macabre and Rhapsody in Blue (which I put on as soon as the episode finished)!

Fun fact about Danse Macabre: "The solo violin enters playing the tritone, which was known as the diabolus in musica ("the Devil in music") during the Medieval and Baroque eras, consisting of an A and an E♭—in an example of scordatura tuning, the violinist's E string has actually been tuned down to an E♭ to create the dissonant tritone." (People hated it when it premiered. It made them feel anxious. Which is... kind of appropriate.)

hi, just wanna say that without the essays and analysis people as you have published here, I wouldn't love Kiro as much as I do nowadays, he's my precious sunshine. I don't really expect anything from Papergames as a company, so I'm keeping my little treasures regardless of what's gonna come out of it in the end. do you plan in the future to explain what you think ended up going downhill with the direction of the game you have briefly mentioned?

Hello @ladyjune26! Thanks for the ask and being so very patient with me on answering. Here are the major complaints/pet peeves I have with what Papergames has done and continues to do to lessen my love of the game and their treatment of Kiro as a main love interest: *WARNING* LOTS OF RANTING AHEAD

Kiro always being the "odd one out of the bunch" in regards to karmas: Honestly, why did Papergames think it was a good idea to do this? I can tell which love interest they favor most over Kiro just from looking at the karma illustrations during group events. It's almost like they use a different filter on them or use a different artist completely to draw his karmas cuz his stick out like a sore thumb. A perfect example would be from last year's Xmas/New Year's event (Modern Rhapsody) where all the guys get stylish hairstyles and Kiro gets the short end of the stick. They forgot he's a main love interest and now he's just an afterthought. Another example is the Valentine's event where all the guys get kiss karmas and say "I love you". All the guys have open-mouth kisses with their eyes open and once again they don't do that with Kiro. IS IT REALLY THAT DIFFICULT TO BE CONSISTENT!?!?! MAKE IT MAKE SENSE!!! Plus, why can't they ever draw MC in gorgeous outfits or hot and intimate scenes with Kiro? She constantly looks plain and boring in many of them. Her relationship with Kiro is no longer friends anymore. THEY'RE LOVERS!!! Also, no creativity. There's a lot of karmas where they draw the same old stuff in them like a teddy bear, daisies, sunflowers....COME ON!!! THOSE AREN'T THE ONLY THINGS GOING FOR HIM!!! 'The Versatile King' my ass!!! Don't make statements like those if you can't even fulfill them. If they need ideas for karmas I have plenty...no wait, they already used them for the other love interests which leads to the next point.

Kiro has been reduced to a minor character/NPC role: In season 1 main story, Kiro had the least amount of screen time. I remember a Weibo post where a CN player calculated how much total screen time he had and it was 80 minutes! I haven't exactly tested if this was true but I've seen many CN fans mention this. Also, throughout season 1, his major plot points were all put into Rumors and Secrets and they're still doing it in season 2. And don't get me started on how much repetitiveness on certain aspects of his character...ISTG, I'VE NEVER SEEN SO MANY METAPHORS ABOUT A BEAR IN MY LIFE!!! Starting to see the pattern now?

Nothing gets changed when Kiro fans address issues: There was a time when during one of Gavin's bday karmas, his fans were hounding customer service to add the gingko bracelet to MC's wrist and within a very short period of time, it was done. However, whenever Kiro fans want something changed, nothing, ABSOLUTELY NOTHING, gets done. A while back, there was a magazine advertising the game and for some very strange reason, they typed Kiro's name wrong and his birthdate. The entire Weibo page was just post after post about it. There's no excuse for such a small mistake which could have easily been avoided.

His karmas are released last: Whether it's the Fragrant Sunshine ERs, solo Wish Tree events, or in general, Kiro tends to be the last one scheduled. So far, he has not had a single free SR/SSR karma this year and it's already July. When the first kiss karmas were released several years ago, Kiro was once again the last one released.

Storyline and character arc: Are they ever going to address how Kiro can change into his silver-haired Helios form? Why does he have those markings on his right arm and how can they appear and disappear whenever? Is he ever going to find his master KEY? Why does Kiro look so much like his master KEY who was the previous Helios? Does that mean KEY also had blue eyes? What is this mission they keep teasing about? HELL, HIS ORIGINS!?!? There's been no story development whatsoever and they keep reusing the same stuff in the chapters. What happened to all that awesome character development in the first half of season 2? Crumbs keep dropping but it leads to nowhere. Here's a hot take: Westmoon had a much better, cohesive story overall. I am forever sad that it's over. If it isn't already obvious, the writers are heavily milking the main story. As much as I don't like season 1, at least it was more entertaining and mysterious especially when MC "died" and ended up in Winter World where all the love interests didn't know her. They should have continued from there. It would have been interesting to see how the relationships developed and MC ended up staying despite everything? Did she have to go back to the "main world"? There's just too many questions or maybe I'm being too analytical.

That's pretty much all the major issues I've come across. There are others but I've done enough nit-picking. However, don't let my opinions sway your enjoyment of the game. If you still like it, then please by all means, continue to play. Hope you have a wonderful day and take care!

omg this new prompt list is SO GOOD.

I totally stopped at "exclaiming "because I love you," during an argument and then right under that prompt was rain kisses. So like TOGETHER! Fighting in the rain. Gah I needs it!

I'd love Juke but I know that's not your fav so Rukebox would be my second choice followed closely by maybe hmmm, Luke/Reggie. I feel like it's Luke or Julie doing the dramatic exclaiming and I'm not a fan of Rulie (sorry)

You ship what you want, and I'll ship what I want, it's all cool. Besides we can always agree on the best triad formation of Julie/Luke/Reggie, so no worries.

Reggie was good at pretending.

He pretended he had a loving family and supportive parents when it was the complete opposite. He pretended that his low grades that threatened to make him senior year didn't bother him. He pretended to be cool with the band doing Christmas every year when he went home to light his tiny menorah.

And most of all, he pretended he wasn't hopelessly in love with Luke and Julie.

He had gotten pretty good at it, even though his heart ached everytime he looked at them, saw them making heart eyes and singing love songs at one another. Even if they were perfect for one another, that didn't make his feelings fade any.

He missed sharing a mic or a notebook with Luke. Painting his nails or discussing country music with Julie. Sure they did still did those things, but it didn't feel the same-not with the spectre of their partner hanging over him. He felt like a third wheel, and that was a feeling he hated.

He would be fine if he could one, or both of them as his loves, but he didn't think there was any way forward with that. His luck wasn't that good.

Especially now, given the three of them were trapped in the studio waiting for a rain storm to pass so they could head to their respective homes. If the rain and wind wasn't so violent Reggie would have hopped on his bike, but he didn't want to risk wiping out so he stayed put.

"Yo Reg do you wanna help on the bridge for Electric Heart?" Luke asked.

"I think you both have it in hand," Reggie replied, but the smile on his face was strained, his eyes not as bright as they usually were.

"How about the melody to Untamed Rhapsody?" Julie suggested.

"I'm good," Reggie said, idly strumming his bass, not looking up to see their expressions.

"Why are you such a grouch today?" Luke snarked.

"Yeah, what happened to our sunshiney boy?" Julie asked.

It was the our that broke him-it stung so much to have it dangled in front of him by the very people he wanted to mean it.

"Maybe I don't wanna be sunshiney!" he shouted. "Maybe sometimes I'm a storm cloud, or a stiff breeze, or a fucking tornado. If you knew me, you'd know that!"

"Reggie..." Luke said, standing, and bringing Julie with him.

"No!" He exclaimed, scooting backwards. "I am so sick of pretending to be okay, and neither of you notice. None of you do. None of you even care!"

With that he stormed out, heedless of the rain, just marching off in the direction of Silver Lake, too mad to stop for his bike, or grab his jacket. He was too fuming mad to care about the raindrops dripping into his eyes, as he blinked them away with his tears. He could care less about his soaked clothes, all he cared about was getting away.

"Reggie!" Luke called, catching up, holding his arm fast.

"What?"

"How could you ever think we don't care about you?" he asked.

"We know when you put up a front Reggie," Julie said, pushing her water logged curls away from her face. "We figured when you were ready to talk to us, you would-we didn't want to push."

"How? Why?" Reggie asked.

"Because I love you!" Luke shouted. "We love you!"

"And before you argue or front, we don't mean as friends," Julie stated firmly. "We've both been in love with you since almost as long as we've been together, but we weren't sure how you felt."

"Then I saw your song...the one about a heart pulled in two directions. Then I knew," Luke said, rubbing the back of his neck. "It's such a good song Reg."

"It's nothing-" Reggie said, but was cut off as both Luke and Julie gathered him into their arms.

"Never doubt yourself," Julie admonished. "You are talented, and wonderful, and so so handsome."

"How could we not love you?" Luke asked, a faint laugh in his voice.

"I love you both too," Reggie broke down, though this time the tears were happy, relieved, and made even the rain feel like nothing.

Julie was the first to kiss a tear away, then Luke, making Reggie giggle as they pecked each of his freckles, the corners of his eyes, the tip of his nose, the hinge of his jaw.

But he was the one who gripped Luke's face, pulling him in for a real kiss, a little hard, a little bit too much tongue, and perfect all the same. Then he kissed Julie whose kiss was sweeter, with a hint of teeth, and surpassed his every imagining.

Luke pulled Julie into a kiss then-but this time Reggie didn't feel jealousy or heartbroken. He felt glad to see the loves of his life there with them, sharing the love between them all.

"Can we go back inside now?" he asked. "I'm soaked through and we're all going to get pneumonia at this rate."

"Can't risk that, we have to plan our first date," Luke said with a grin, pulling them back towards the studio.

It was Julie who directed them towards the house where she had changes of clothes for them stashed away, and warm horchata to drink. Plus she had to give her father the chance to gloat over knowing all along.

Reggie didn't have to pretend to smile at that-his grin was one hundred percent genuine, as was every smile that followed it for the rest of his life.
