A secretly made documentary expanding on allegations of sexual assault against supreme court justice Brett Kavanaugh has premiered at this year’s Sundance film festival.

Justice, a last-minute addition to the schedule, aims to shine a light not only on the women who have accused Kavanaugh, a Donald Trump nominee, but also the failed FBI investigation into the allegations.

“I do hope this triggers outrage,” said producer Amy Herdy in a Q&A after the premiere in Park City, Utah. “I do hope that this triggers action, I do hope that this triggers additional investigation with real subpoena powers.”

The film provides a timeline of the allegations, initially that Kavanaugh was accused by Christine Blasey Ford of sexual assault when she was 15 and he 17. She alleged that he held her down on a bed and groped her, and tried to rip her clothes off before she got away. Kavanaugh was also accused of sexual misconduct by Deborah Ramirez, who alleged that he exposed himself and thrust his penis at her face without her consent at a college party.

Kavanaugh denies the allegations. He turned down requests to take part in the documentary.

The first scene features Ford, half off-camera, interviewed by the film’s director Doug Liman, whose credits include Mr and Mrs Smith and The Bourne Identity. Justice features a number of interviews with journalists, lawyers, psychologists and those who knew Ford and Ramirez.

“This was the kind of movie where people are terrified,” Liman said. “The people that chose to participate in the movie are heroes.”

In the film, Ramirez, who previously told her story to Ronan Farrow in the New Yorker, also shares her story on-camera. Ramirez is referred to as someone “they worked hard for people not to know”, her story never given the space it deserved until long after Kavanaugh was confirmed to the court in October 2018.

Ramirez details a Catholic upbringing, before explaining that her high grades got her into Yale when the university was slowly diversifying its student body in the mid-80s. As well as being admitted only 15 years after women were allowed in, Ramirez was also biracial and working class. “My mum was concerned,” she recounts, emotionally, in the documentary.

Friends at the time refer to her as “sweet and Bambi-like” and “innocent to a fault”, but Ramirez tried to fit in by becoming a cheerleader and by drinking with her peers. This, she says, brought her into the orbit of Kavanaugh, who came from a privileged family and was known as a heavy drinker at the time (he is referred to in the film as someone who was usually “more drunk than everyone else”). Ramirez recounts the alleged event, when she was intoxicated and, she says, made, without her consent, to touch Kavanaugh’s penis, which he had placed near her face.

The film then details how the circles around Ramirez and Kavanaugh responded, showing text messages of a discussion when Ramirez’s allegations were about to go public, of a mutual friend being asked by Kavanaugh to go on record to defend him. Another friend refers to it as “a cover-up”.

The New Yorker included a statement from a group of students at the time in support of Kavanaugh. A year later, the film shows that two of them emailed the New Yorker to remove their names from the statement.

Ramirez’s lawyers claim they contacted Republican senator Jeff Flake, who was involved in Kavanaugh’s confirmation hearings, to explain what happened to her. The next day Flake called to delay the confirmation and insist on a week-long FBI investigation.

But the film details how the FBI failed to call on the many witnesses recommended by Ramirez’s lawyers. Footage is shown of the film-makers meeting with a confidential source who plays tape of Kavanaugh’s classmate Max Stier, now a prominent figure in Washington running a non-profit, who allegedly witnessed Kavanaugh involved in a similar act of alleged drunken exposure with a female student at a dorm party at Yale. The woman has chosen to remain anonymous and this is the first time this recording has been heard.

It was made during the week the FBI investigated Kavanaugh, and despite Stier notifying them, they failed to speak to him. “You don’t talk to that guy, you’re not talking to anybody,” Liman said during the Q&A.

The FBI tip line that was set up is referred to as “a graveyard”, with 4,500 tips sent straight to the White House rather than being investigated. It’s referred to as another “cover-up”.

The film-makers also spoke to other accuser who alleged misconduct but could not be included in the film. “We did speak to people who had other allegations, and we were very careful and thorough, and it’s not for disbelieving them – but the stories you see here are the ones you are able to corroborate,” Herdy said to the audience.

Justice was made in secrecy over the last year, with NDAs signed by everyone involved. The project was self-funded by Liman, making his documentary debut. He told the Hollywood Reporter that the supreme court holds “special meaning” to him, his father having been a lawyer and activist and his brother a federal judge. He was frustrated by the FBI investigation into Kavanaugh that “never happened”, and sought the help of renowned documentary producers Liz Garbus and Herdy, both with specialised experience of films about sexual assault allegations, to do the work that he saw as unfinished, if barely started at all.

At the Q&A, he expressed the importance of secrecy, speaking about “the machinery that’s put into place against anyone who dared to speak up” and an awareness that this machinery would be turned on the film if it was made public.

“There would have been some kind of injunction,” he said. “This film wouldn’t have been showing here.”

It was only screened to Sundance high-ups on Wednesday before being officially announced on Thursday. It premiered to a sold-out cinema on Friday.

In the past few years, the festival has become a regular home to a number of investigative documentaries about alleged sexual predators in the public eye. Figures such as Michael Jackson, Bill Cosby, Russell Simmons and former Sundance mainstay Harvey Weinstein have all been spotlighted.

Since the announcement of Justice, Herdy confirmed they have been “getting more tips”, which started arriving just 30 minutes after the press release went out. Liman added that the film, which is seeking a distributor, will now possibly need to be extended and re-edited.

Herdy added: “It’s not over.”

“Zwei zu Eins” (“Two to One”) still topping the German Indie cinema box office, passing the 200,000 viewers mark in its 2nd week ❤️

Q: Even though it has absolutely nothing to do with the plot of the film - what is your favourite “2:1" in football history?

Max: Oh. I definitely love watching football and used to play it myself. To answer the question: I like the games that are decided 2:1 in the last few minutes. (laughs)

Q: The characters in the film find this huge mountain of money. Were you tempted to play Uncle Scrooge and swim in it?

Max: Yes, we made that dream come true. Even though there were no coins in that mountain of money, it was harder than we thought. It was also a nice get-together with co-stars Ronald Zehrfeld, Sandra Hüller and Peter Kurth. And because you'll probably never get an opportunity like that again, I also took my daughter to swim in that mountain of money.

Q: The protagonists don't know at the beginning that the money still has value. Stealing it is actually pretty stupid. What is the stupidest thing you have ever taken with you?

Max: The stupidest thing was probably pens from a stationery store. Things that you didn't actually need, but as a child you stole them as part of a dare.

Q: If you were in the shoes of your character Robert and suddenly had a lot of money: what would you buy first?

Max: I would probably fulfil my family's every wish first. If they are doing well, I automatically feel much better too. You could support a lot of people with that kind of money, for example through charities. That would probably be the most satisfying. And then maybe a house with direct access to the sea.

Q: So, Max Riemelt seems quite similar to Robert.

Max: Absolutely, I identified with the character very quickly. He is a total family man, with community spirit and always has justice in mind. The character's solution-oriented way of thinking really appealed to me.

Q: Did you take one of the banknotes home with you as a souvenir?

Max: I actually took several and gave them away. They were specially produced and printed for the film with great attention to detail.

Q: Did you also take 200 and 500 notes with you, which officially never actually existed?

Max: Yes, of course I had to have them. (laughs)

Q: Natja Brunckhorst (director) first made a name for herself as an actress - especially with her leading role in “Wir Kinder vom Bahnhof Zoo”. Do you notice a difference if the director came from an acting background?

Max: Definitely. Such directors have a special appreciation for the profession of acting as they are aware of what acting means. Natja is also a sensitive person and idealistic like the characters in “Two to One”. In this film she underlines people's inner values ​​and shows what we are increasingly losing today - but without wagging a moral finger. The story is a nice metaphor for how idiotic this hunt for money and people's reaction to money can be sometimes.

Q: Because “Zwei zu Eins” is about how something was sold below its value: Which films you acted in that performed below their value, and you hope movie fans will discover?

Max: I thought “13 Semester” was a very funny comedy, but I don't know exactly how many people watched it. I also think“Tage die Bleiben” (Eng title: “A Family of Three”) is good, or “Lichtgestalten” (Eng Title: “Icons of Light”) because it's a very abstract film. And “Kopfplatzen” (Eng Title: “Headburst”), which deals with a taboo subject that needs to be talked about in order to prevent it. These are all relatively small (budget) films, but they are slowly finding their audience.

this is pretty neat. wand wars is a party game about being wizards shooting a magic orb at each other and the last one standing wins. this has to have far more staying power as a multiplayer game but, alas, i am by my lonesome. i didnt love the control scheme (does really feel like it wants to be a twin stick shooter and not something played on keyboard). also it really bugged me that the projectile wasnt pixellated when everything else was. wand wars kinda fits the niche of a good boutique board game IMO, fun to break out with nerd friends at some nerd gathering

Baldi's Basics Plus - $10

my commitment to the premise of this project being vastly outweighed by how much i dont actually want to play baldi's basics. i could have hit random again and nobody would be the wiser

so i guess my take is roughly that im in the exact nostalgia bait audience for baldi's basics (i played tons of these edutainment games in elementary school) but its specifically aping so much of its aesthetic and presentation from sonic's schoolhouse which i cant imagine had a widespread school computer lab adoption. if someone made a off-color video game inspired by Disney's Adventures in Typing with Timon & Pumbaa or smth that would probably actually get somewhere. for me. also i hate jumpscares and YOU DONT EVEN SOLVE MATH PROBLEMS IN THIS ONE???? WHATS THE POINT

this is not a good review for baldi's basics sorry. i like that the camera controls are vertically locked even tho the game makes a lot of other concessions for a modern audience. and there really is nothing else in its genre that looks like this

Valfaris - $24.99

i cannot for the life of me figure out why i own this game.

ok first things first the art direction in this fucks insanely. it feels like a ps1 game in a way many other ps1 throwbacks don't. i really enjoyed looking at valfaris.

however this controls like SHIT and not in a way that i think would be fixed by a controller. i spent a couple minutes rebinding my controls so it isnt arrow keys to move and q/w for main attacks (this randomly reset to default at some point so that was cool) and i was still fighting for my life to actually accomplish what the game wants me to. there's a segment only a few seconds into the first level where you need to climb on ropes over some evil dogs to cross a ledge but 1. the dogs can jump up and attack you and 2. you can only aim your gun straight down. and the dogs respawn infinitely so you cant jump into the dog pit, slaughter them all and continue on your way. i legitimately could not get past this section because the controls were so ass. really unfortunate.

also the game has "wishlist the sequel" as one of its three menu options which: lmao

Thou Shalt Be Brave - $1

this is a micro-rpg that is imo unfortunately hamstrung by its gimmick (the really small resolution). theres some really bad readability issues happening in this game. there is a manual on the itch page which helps a lot in combat but its really hard to excuse the "you sease lok s" message you see constantly.

this is pretty light on gameplay also but its generally a pretty fun timewaster. you explore the woods and fight guys and the ultimate goal appears to be maxing all your stats. i just wish i wasnt examining every button like it was a cryptic glyph to decipher

Planets Under Attack - $11.99

you know its bad when ive had this game on steam for over 10 years and have no idea what it is

i'm not sure how to describe planets under attack. it's a very minimalistic strategy game about spending resources to take over planets in each map. it seemed pretty chill but i did kinda feel like i was wasting my time playing it. the presentation is really competent and overall i think this is the strongest of the five games i played today

a whopping 4 can you tell I don't write fics often!

though there actually used to be a few more short oneshots, but when I fell rather violently out of love with SPN, which they were for I just. couldn't stand to see them in there anymore (and I didn't like the writing itself anymore either) and I ended up deleting them... ^^"

2. What's your total AO3 word count?

41,198 (and the deleted fics would only have added around maybe 1000 words? 2k max but I don't even think they added up to that much)

3. What fandoms do you write for?

the only fics left are for DBH now, I have considered writing for Sandman, but tbh. there's sooooo many good writers in this fandom, anything I want to exist as fics is pretty much already there or in progress of being made and so I'm rather content to focus on art, slow at it though I may be :'D

4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?

er, well since there's only 4 of em:

1. no one can tell where your heart is (885, still in progress. and has been for a while I am so sorry)

I usually do or try to, even if it's just a short answer, because I love engaging with people over things that are important to me (and with comments I don't have to start the conversdation so to speak).

While not hostile, the weirdest I got was someone trying to convince me to let them sort of cowrite the fic with me? I respectfully declined because I did (I do TAT) have the general story outlined.

...haven't yet, but the two fics in progres will have it. We'll find out h kind then I suppose.

I have not and don't know if I would? If I did I'd probably only very loosely do it, because I am not confident I could do each included world/fandom justice. That's easier with art for me than writing.

hmmm, not sure I write enough to really find em. minimalism? Shorter stories in a more minimal style I'd say.

hilariously, I think that's also minimalism. because writing longer overarcing storylines when this is your go to becomes difficult.

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic.

well, I am German, so if the opportunity presented itself for a character where it works I could.

as far as writing in general in English goes. idk, I spent a lot of my time conversing and writing in English even outside the internet, and it's hard for me to judge how well lI'm doing in terms of er. written eloquence? I try my best and that's all I can do really.

For languages I don't know, I'd probably try to find someone who knows them or make really sure I've got it correct, I don't trust google translate enough :'D

I was tagged by @cleflink ! This is going to be hard for me, why do you ask me to choose between my favorite children...

1. Kuroba Kaito (Magic Kaito/Detective Conan)

Let's start easy with my current active fandom. I adore Kaito, adored him since I first saw him on my sister's tiny TV in 2002 while we watched afternoon anime. I haven't stayed active in the fandom continuously over the last 20 years, but I always come back and whenever I do, I remember why I love him so much.

2. Arthur (Inception)

There are a couple of movies that I have seen several times in the movie theater, because I watched them once and then dragged all my friends to watch it with me. One of these movies was Inception. But I don't think I would have latched onto Arthur this much if it wasn't for the fandom. Many of the fics in that fandom are still so dear to me and the character exploration in them was A+.

3. Furiosa (Mad Max Fury Road)

Speaking of movies I watched several times in the movie theater: I think I watched this movie 5 times, dragging everyone in there with me to witness this movie on a big screen. Every single time was worth it and I love Furiosa so much.

4. Q (James Bond)

While we are talking movies, I can't pass up on mentioning Skyfall! Watched that while I was in film school and fell in love with the beautiful cinematography (highly recommend looking for movie screencaps online, I'd frame so many of these shots). And then there is Q, who made me leave the movie theater and desperately look up fic because I wanted to see more of him (which was hilarious, because the movie released a week ahead of the US in Europe and US Tumblr was incredibly bitter about it)

5. Oikawa Tooru (Haikyuu)

This guy!!!! This guy right here! I love him, I love his hubris, his passion and his ego and he got one of the most satisfying character arcs in the entire series. He came so far! Talk to me about Oikawa and I will not shut up.

6. Nami (One Piece)

My forever girl! She was the reason I wrote fanfic back in the day (and no, none of you will ever get to see it). The Arlong Park storyline left a huge impact on me.

7. Dave Strider (Homestuck)

Speaking of incredibly satisfying character arc! I didn't start out rooting for him but he grew on me like an invasive plant species.

8. Nico di Angelo (Percy Jackson)

Now that I write these down, this is another depressed and traumatized boy coming to terms with homosexuality, clearly there has been a theme. I have drawn so much Nico fanart in the past. He deserves all the happiness.

9. Dick Grayson (Batman)

Fun fact, I am on Tumblr because of this guy. Back in 2011, when I had no idea what DC comics were about, Young Justice aired. And I got curious. And fell headfirst into the Batfamily from there. This was a hard choice, because Damian is also my boy, but Dick was the one who made me dive deep and make a Tumblr so I could share some silly doodles with people.

10. Moist von Lipwig (Discworld)

A conman and a liar with a soft heart, who ends up being the most upstanding person around, trying his best. His books in the series are some of my faves and I should reread them

hibiscus :   how does your muse view the gentler ,   daintier things in life ?   as things worth preserving   &   caring for ,   or things only bound to wither   &   disappear ?  

very fascinating q for nancy because there's a multifaceted answer to it, certainly, on the one hand she has a strong sense of justice that necessitates protecting that which is "weaker" – on the other hand she is a logical realist in all her glory. and then there's another part of her, albeit a little buried, that resents the daintier, kinder things in life because she used to be that. the image she meticulously crafted as a child into her teenagehood was as close to picture-perfect, gentle (meek) girl-next-door as she could get to, because that appeared to be generally palatable. it was only with barb's death and her own socially ostracizing experience which followed that she found the truth was that she was a far cry from that image. that she had been acting the part by force (force from her own hand). so, i'll break it down by feeling :)

protector ... to answer either/or, this would be the idea of preserving and caring for that which is at least perceived as "weaker" than yourself ––  in nancy's case i'd say the kids, for example, though i suppose that's not exactly what the question is asking. i will say i feel like the way we see her protect others, she's often not going out of her way to protect the gentler of the crop, she's at the forefront to protect kids who think they can win. max is not dainty, for instance. dustin isn't either. lucas isn't. yet she keeps these three safe throughout s4 in particular in some fairly tangible ways. all to say i'm sort of talking myself out of this one, ha – i think nancy respects when she sees herself in others, and she herself is not dainty, even if she once seemed meek she's no longer that. she sees herself in max, in lucas (i think she sees steve in dustin but that's a conversation for another day). that is to say, she protects them because they're strong, because they are kids who are trying to be fighters; and that's exactly what she was just a few years back. if she's saint jude, her lost causes put up a fight.

realist ... in this regard, for example, nancy would easily step on freshly bloomed flowers to make it to the other side of the road if it was the surest and necessary path, she wouldn't even hesitate. gentle, dainty, sweet, are all fine and well until they get in the way ––  and at that point, they're useless, and serve no purpose. that's not to say some sort of extreme like she'd leave someone behind who embodies those ideals, but i think she'd be visible and vocally frustrated by them, and it would be a begrudging sense of duty (in most cases). at the end of the day, a flower wilts, you can't fight nature –  she's tried!

resentment ... the girl nancy used to be was perfect: she wore beautiful pink dresses, she kept up with her schoolwork, she smiled at the right moments and she cared what people thought of her. the girl she is now is none of those things, and has long since realized that to be that girl-next-door that she once was is not only a pipe dream after what she's been through, but she doubts it was ever feasible. to see things which are gentle and dainty bring about a sort of grief for what she's lost, a mourning, but also a festering sort of anger that she'd ever been foolish enough to believe in the very concept of softness. this is not very feminist of me so apologies to everyone, but i definitely think she is the sort who holds a bitterness towards girlish women now  –  which is her own internalized shit that she needs to work through. but i think the very concept of meek girlhood disgusts her now, and in part it's that resentment bred from the fact she can't have that anymore (enter the t-swift line, overplayed as it is, give me back my girlhood it was mine first).

4. What is the plot bunny you’ve been carrying for the longest? optional bonus question: do you ever wonder why you haven’t written it yet and experience deep existential dread?

Okay so mild spoilers for LITFL bc I am finally getting to write it at some point!! (as hinted at in the prev ask). The summarised version is Richard taking Sophie & Vanessa for some brief sightseeing round Singapore prior to the race in 2023, as his maternal grandparents were from there and he wants to share it with people who have now become his friends 💖

In terms of why I haven't written it, I only got the idea long after I'd finished the first version of Life In The Fast Lane. There's a very similar scene in Crazy Rich Asians (book and film 100% recommend) that gave me the inspiration, and I knew it would be a perfect scene to showcase the changing in the trio's relationship from colleagues to absolute best buds. And yes I do absolutely have the existential dread bc 1. I'm British white bread so I really want to make sure it's accurate as possible and 2. I love The Dream Team so much and really hope I can do it justice,

11. What’s something neat you’ve learned while doing research for something you were writing? Also, how much do you worry about doing research in general?

Related to the above Q, hawker centre/street food culture in South East Asia! I'm a big foodie, so I just adore learning about foods/food culture in different countries. And honestly, not really. I'm autistic so researching is very much my jam.

26. Do you like to write one-shots or series, and why?

I wish I could write more one shots bc they're a really nice satisfying tied in a bow type fic, but I'm very much a series writer. I just have too so much to say 😭

39. Are you an avid reader?

I like to think so, I certainly own a decent share of books! I'm not one of those reading 24/7 type people, but I very much enjoy it.

52. How many unfinished ideas/stories are you working on at the same time?

I try my upmost to work on one, or a max of two, at a time, mainly so I don't lose track of any ideas or anything. I tend to get quite hyper focused, but sometimes a bit of inspo for another wip will hit and I'll need to write it down other wise I will forget.
