Dear reader, did I think to myself, "hey, so writing in a notion database per this advice seems like an interesting idea but slightly unwieldy because there appears to be no option to export all the scenes to a single document (if you choose markdown, which I prefer, each scene is exported to a separate markdown file in a subfolder), but wouldn't writing a python script to merge all those exported files in order be pretty simple?" and proceed to actually do that for about an hour, on the off chance that I hypothetically ever try to follow this writing advice, instead of doing any actual writing? Have been working on this 10 volume set for the past few months now, and they are finally complete. My Magnum Opus. I have peaked and probably depleted all of my brain power.

Thank you to @motswolo for writing such a beautiful story. My brain chemistry has been favourably altered. Will forever flinch when I hear Queen, The Beatles or Bob Dylan. Love to you from western Canada (west coast best coast lets gooooo).

Going to write a whole essay below about the ideas and details because uhhh I wanna yap bit!

So for starters, I wanted to make these binds look like magazines because of the epilogue where (spoiler) Tonya sees Remus in a copy of New Musical Express. But of course this fic is long, so I was like, what if I do multiple volumes? This very quickly spiralled into me painstakingly (finding publication-accurate fonts almost sent me to an early grave) recreating 10 different music-focused magazines from the 70s and 80s from scratch (thank you to Photoshop, Affinity, Procreate and Canva). Each volume features a unique cover, along with stylized typesets to match that display the songs for each chapter but in different designs. And then I went a little crazy and made a 45 sleeve and a cassette too, to really set the scene when I took the photos lol

While the covers display the dates pertaining to the contents of that particular volume (Sept 1975 for volume one, for example) I was thinking about what the magazines would say if they were really published when Marauders are traipsing about being spectacular and famous in the future. I sprinkled in details from the fic itself and fanon-ed it a bit, but that was the general inspiration :-) Tried to keep the photos used either faceless/obscured, or to use the fancasts on Mots’ Cadence master post. I also tried to use period-accurate photos but didn’t always succeed, so settled for photos of 4 member bands where I had to :”) But the general intent with the facelessness was that they could be implied to be Marauders. If you squint? lol. Just pretend. Pls.

Volume One: Based upon The Record Song Book. This magazine went on to inspire the typesets, since it publishes lyrics and such. The cover images are of Spacey Jane and David Thewlis.

Volume Two: Based on ZigZag, specifically the issue from July 1978 featuring Siouxie and the Banshees just because I thought it looked sick as fuck. I re-drew the abstract shapes and such in procreate. The cover images are The Clash and a young Gary Oldman. Lord he was foiiine.

Volume Three: Based on Trouser Press, November 1980. The cover images are a young Metallica, and my personal fav fan cast for James, Reiky De Valk. The film negatives are from a Bruce Springsteen tour, 1976.

Volume Four: Based on Gay Times (November 1984), a queer magazine from the UK because this volume contains Wolfstars first kiss hehe. Also hence Somebody To Love plastered all over the covers. The Front cover is Inhaler. The “4A” on this one is of course the boys’ dorm number, but I made the A the lambda symbol as this was a pride symbol in the 70s after Stonewall.

Volume Five: Based on Melody Maker. Front image is Alex Turner. All of the text on this one is pulled directly from the fic. The scene where they all drop acid and James jumps off the roof Almost Famous style had me hootin’ and hollerin’… until Tomny showed up hahaha :”)

Volume Six: Based on IT (International Times, Aug 1971). Front image for this one is Joy Division, and the back features Jane Asher for Lily

Volume Seven: Based on Record Mirror, June 1976. Front image is John Taylor of Duran Duran. Yum.

Volume Eight: Based on Rolling Stone. More vibes than anything for this one, but the quote still makes me laugh.  Front image is of Matt Hitt. Can you tell I photoshopped a cell phone out of this one? IDK. This photo just screamed ‘Remus’ to me so I had to use it. The back image is an old cigarette ad, but the photo is taken in Shepherd’s Bush.

Volume Nine: Based on Fusion magazine. Front image for this one is once again Inhaler. Oops. Back cover is our gals. Images are Jodie Foster as Cherry, Brenda Sykes as Mary, and Goldie Hawn as Lottie.

Volume Ten: Based on New Musical Express. You know why :”) These are all victims of fanon, but this one especially. I wanted it to be NME instead of the re-invented logos I’d been doing for all the rest, as I wanted it to look like the magazine the Sister gives to Tonya. I referred to an issue of NME from October 1979 for this and layered in fic references where it made sense to. The cover image for this one is (I think) Cigarettes After Sex. This issue also contains all of the B-Side chapters, and the Marauders song lyrics too just for fun :)

Slasher Chick: This is just my take on what Sybill’s zine could’ve looked like. Prob way off but I just wanted to have fun with this one since I had no cover to reference lol. The zine contains her little write-up and the interview, lifted straight from the fic :")

People would keep an eye on what creature you are playing with more often. They see that as a clue on who is your favorite among them.

Trash Cake

Stelle and Caelus already have followed you like a pair of lost puppies, yet somehow, they became even more clingy. They do argue about who exactly you like more. They do it behind your back.

They also became a pair of gremlins to others. They aren't only your official avatars (when you are in the real world and use game apps), but your favorites.

Rice Dumpling

Dan Heng is trying to play it cool. He always denied that he and Rice Dumpling look similar. He can't just admit it, so he could vocally enjoy the fact that he is your favorite. You just like the critter, who has no connection to him.

And he doesn't cheer in secret when no one is around! He swears! And he isn't jealous of the critter! No, he is not!

Ice Cake

A lot of photos with you, March and Ice Cake. A LOT. March already has a shelf full of albums with photos with you two. If you didn't stop her, soon you will need a second Astral Express that will only carry albums.

March will also make matching accessories for you three. And clothes. And phone cases (for you and her).

Lambda's Friend

Ruan Mei is actually concerned. She often visits the real world with you. She is very familiar with fandom. She saw opinions about her attitude towards her creations. She doesn't think if she really needs to be called out or try to be a better "mother". She is fine that you like her creations. She is worried that you chose her "double". You have a monster as your ancestor, a tyrant god who played with their creations' lives out of boredom and didn't care about their creations' well-being. One day you would become a powerful deity. One day you will be able to create with your powers. You didn't like your ancestor. You didn't want to be like them. But if she was your favorite, does it mean that you will be okay with being like her?

There are some positive thoughts. Ruan Mei, deep inside, is happy to be your favorite. But the lingering thoughts will remain. Until you two speak.

Sesame Cake

No. Just no. Don't get me wrong, Blade likes you. He took his job as your bodyguard very seriously, and he is grateful to be your friend. But there are too many rumors already. Because he is always staying in one room with you and rarely leaving your side, people assume that there's something more than friendship. There are fanfics about you two! And Sesame Cake makes the situation worse! Blade is tired of that foolishness. He didn't care about his reputation, but yours is on stake.

Still, he will always join you when you take care of the creature. He also has the tiny smug grin when someone is taking your fondness of Sesame Cake.

Troublemaker

Guinaifen's reputation is skyrocketing. Everyone wanted to see her. She now wants to add Troublemaker and you to her performances. Not for the sake of reputation. Guinaifen wants to strengthen your friendship.

She is thinking about making merch with you and Troublemaker.

Wisteria Cake

The Herta will see it as an opportunity to learn more about the real world. If she and her puppets are your favorites, does it mean you want to spend more time with them? Do you want to see them in the real world? Will you let them follow you in the real world? She will gladly spend more time with you. You will have a great time having fun in the real world.

She will also add Wisteria Cake into Simulated Universe. Creature would appear anywhere and hop after you. It won't do anything else.

Lucky Snack

Qingque became even more of a slacker, if it's even possible. Who could be angry at her? She is their future god's favorite person. You will receive a ton of invitations from her. Starting with going to a new teahouse, ending with an invitation to a game of Celestial Jade.

You probably should apologize to Fu Xuan for making Qingque even more lazy.

Shader Cake

It makes Kafka very happy. Your relationship with Stellaron Hunters started rocky. You had a huge fight (Note to Elio: "Trying to manipulate a person who cherish free will and honesty, and who literally have Terminus by their side is a very bad and stupid idea"). You eventually made up, but Kafka always were worried about that fight you had. If she is your favorite, it means that the past is in the past.

She might steal Shader Cake from the station to "lure" you into Stellaron Hunters' base. You will understand. They miss you. Spend more time with them. Spend more time with her.

Pure Sugar Child

Clara doesn't fully understand what it means. You like a cute creature. She would like to play with it one day. Maybe you, Mr. Svarog and she can play with it one day together.

Others understand what it means. Clara already has been the most protected girl in the world. But now no one would dare to hurt her. There are people who aren't afraid of Svarog. But no one is brave enough to anger you.

anyone could tell who named what cat, and which cat cake was who's favorite.

caritas was veritas' favorite, the name being an old language word meaning ' love ' although he wouldn't really admit to it. he'd told you that the cat's original name - or rather, it's classification, was lambda's friend, with blue skin and black and white filling. but the cat cake had a little gold flower on the side of it's head, too, which reminded him of himself.

caritas loves to chat with the other cat cakes. its the kind of cat that makes friends with other really quickly, so it's always chatting with poker and snuggle about something throughout the day. their conversations can range from anything about how warm the bed is to the best spot in the living room to see the three of their owners dancing together in the kitchen with music while you were trying to make dinner.

ratio absolutely loved to note down their conversations whenever present. it surprised him that such a creature was so articulate, even able to properly express its desires. he'd concluded that the cat cakes had the intelligence of a young toddler with a rudimentary but understandable grasp on language. you and aventurine liked to tease him sometimes for treating the cat cakes as children sometimes, trying to teach them as a parent would, although this was something that ratio would deny wholeheartedly.

" they are an interesting new species. they are ruan mei's creations, and yet she doesn't seem to understand their full potential. i believe it's imperative that we study them and possibly teach them things they otherwise wouldn't know without our interventions, " ratio reasoned, while he was holding the little cat cake, cradling it like it was something precious to him.

poker was aventurine's, the name coming from one of his favorite card games to play, even though he rationalized it by saying that the cat was particularly swatty and liked to cause trouble by batting at things off of the edge of tables. " it likes to poke things until it drops off of the table, so the name poker makes sense, doesn't it ? " yeah, okay aventurine, whatever you say.

poker loved to meow in the dead of night and startle everyone out of sleep in the most inopportune times. ratio has a lecture early in the morning for the intelligentsia guild ? poker is making it's boredom everyone's problem. aventurine has a meeting with the other stonehearts ? oh boy, poker is right there sitting on his face meowing incessantly. if you've got something important to do, well, sorry to say you won't be getting very much sleep that night no matter how early you go to bed. it was bratty, sure, but it was ultimately just an average grey cat cake with nothing special about it, and seemed to have an overwhelming fear of being left alone.

no matter how annoying the cat cake was being that particular night, there was only one way to stop it from meowing. of course, ratio tried to reprimand it and teach it other ways to relieve its boredom at night, but nothing proved effective. you would just try to get it to calm down by playing with it for a little while, but that really only worked until you left it alone, and then it went right back to meowing. aventurine, however, had the magic touch. he would grab the cat cake and bring it into bed, and he would just.. talk to it. in a quiet voice, just chatting about whatever popped up into his head. he'd talk for an hour or more. sometimes it was about sigonia, sometimes it was about his job as a stoneheart. sometimes it was just different gambles and how he ended up winning them.

" so, of course, i had to prove that i was much more than he gave me credit for, " aventurine had been yapping for about an hour now, when he looked down at the cat cake in his arms and realized that it was sound asleep, purring against his chest. " ah, looks like i've done it again. you're welcome, you two. "

" thank you, 'churine, " you mumbled, half asleep as you leaned over to him and pressed a kiss on his cheek, your head falling back down to rest on his shoulder, already falling back asleep. ratio didn't say anything, and when aventurine looked over at him, he couldn't help but smile. he'd put ratio asleep while just chatting, too.

snuggle was your trash cake cat, and there was really no deeper meaning behind the name. it was a snuggly cat, and loved attention. loved anyone and everyone who was willing to give it attention. sometimes you would wake up with it resting on your chest, sometimes you would see ratio lazily carrying snuggle around, and other times aventurine was playing with it making it chase a feather around. snuggle was the attention whore of the trio.

snuggle loved to follow you wherever you walked, especially to the bathroom. whether you were getting ready for the day or just trying to spend a few minutes doing human business, you had a pair of eyes watching over your ever move, making sure that you were never far from its sight, almost like it was protective over you. you couldn't help but compare it to your two partners, lord knows how often they were checking up on you in their own ways. ratio wasn't afraid of shooting you a text whenever he had a free moment while you were away to make sure you were okay, and aventurine was constantly on the phone with you through his headpiece.

" snuggle, i'm just going to the bathroom ! it's okay, really- " you gently protested, earning a small mew from the cat cake as it followed behind you into the bathroom, sitting patiently at the doorway, waiting for you to get finished with your business.

" hey, darling, i'm home from work ~ guess who i dragged back home with me after his lecture. " aventurine called out for you almost immediately, followed by the quieter voice of ratio announcing his presence as well.

you rolled your eyes at your partners immediately calling for you, your heart swelling with love for them, washing your hands as you walked out of the bathroom, snuggle hot on your tracks. " welcome back, guys. all of the cat cakes have been taken care of, and i started dinner. "

" thank you, i'm sure dinner will be pleasant as always, " veritas hummed, his briefcase still in his hand as he leaned down to kiss you on your lips.

" what would we do without you ? " aventurine weaseled his way in between you two, mostly because he also wanted to get his after work love from you.

a chatty cat cake with more intelligence that it originally seemed, a cat cake that needed to be calmed down when everyone left it alone with its thoughts, and a protective cat cake that enjoyed attention and making sure that those around it was okay.

maybe these were the perfect cat cakes for you three.
