what was it really like being in the fandom when 1d was still together? was there stuff happening like every day?

oh my god yes. it was incredible. almost every day we had new content, and it wasn’t all just promo or anything, like, the boys would post on their instagrams, tweet us and each other, there’d be interviews, twitcams, snapchats, photoshoots, new music, new content every day from the tour they were on etc., we were thriiiiiiiving. it felt like so much more of a special relationship, because they’d share more from a personal level and not just tweet to promote new stuff. It was very fun and wholesome and the fandom as a whole were just sooooo active.

due to having all this new content all the time, we also obviously got a lot of Larry stuff. and a lot of Larry stuff means active larries, proofs, a million gif versions of the same interaction, just… excitement. You never knew what they’d do the next day. Tumblr and Twitter was just full of 1d and Larry.

And I think this is a major factor as to why so many larries have slipped away, as well as antis, general 1d fans, etc., because we’re not really… getting much from them anymore. If you go have a look through the 1d Instagram, as well as the boys’ person instagrams, they were active sooooo often. It was a post almost every couple of days. And our fandom was very fun, but fandoms were so much more of a thing. It was like “Directioners vs. Beliebers” and while we argued about who was better, it felt not as purposely hostile as it does now. Fandoms just aren’t the same now, they exist in a different light. If you were around kinda the 12-16 yr old age during 2011-2016, being in a fandom, no matter the topic, was just a thing. It was a sense of belonging, and friendship.

Apart from being such a different fandom these days with the solos and baby fans on Twitter being involved, we also just aren’t getting anything except promo stuff/stunt content (in Harry’s case particularly) now. A selfie from one of them (Louis mainly lol) and we’re all happy and excited for like 24 hours before we’re parched again. The relationship we had back then was so fun and exciting. We grew up with them, and laughed and smiled and felt like we knew them. It just felt so different to the basic promo that every other artist was doing. But twitter and Instagram were used for that reason. But now, they’re very different platforms and we are in a very different social media and PR climate than ever before.

And I think with the lack of Larry content now, people reach to try and confirm that they are still communicating with us like before. Some of the theories I see on twitter about how Louis and harry are signalling to us are… for lack of a better term: wild. It makes us seem so stupid and like we look into things too deep and reach like crazy, and scramble for Larry to still be real. And that comes naturally when you still believe in something/still wanna prove it. You truly are gonna try everything you can to validate that belief to yourself, and to others. But it’s not doing us any favours.

The Larry thing came around from very clear proof, evidence, and interactions that we saw all of the time throughout 1d, but if I came into it now, I’d probably be on the “they once were together but aren’t anymore” side because I wasn’t there during 1d and the very early days, ya know? So I truly applaud baby larries for researching and upholding their belief in the boys because they deserve justice.

I miss it dearly, to be honest. The chaos, the love, the fights, the support, voting 100 times on some fan award so the Beliebers wouldn’t beat us, RBB and SBB, the belonging, the boys. Even the bad times were fun in their own way.

Anyway, living through that time, the stunts were very transparent to us because the 1d team floundered and stumbled and fucked up an incredible amount, because they hadn’t dealt with something so massive with such an intense fandom before. we watched PR try so many different ways to figure out the right equation, to techniques they still use now. I know very lovely folks who aren’t larries anymore, but still will never believe that louis has a kid. It’s really incredible and I don’t think there will be a time like that again, and the only way it would happen similarly would be if 1d got back together and a part of the fandom came back to tumblr. But now a lot of us are grown up and can’t be online 24/7, and we have bigger priorities/different interests. But I think we’ll always be here in some capacity, and the internet would fully explode if there was a reunion. God, could you imagine?

Anyway, yeah, it was a beautiful time and I miss it. Sometimes it’s lovely to go through old screenshots and their instagrams and tweets and remind myself of that time that was truly formative for us and being part of a journey that was so exciting and shocking with twists and turns and love and hate and chaotically posting about whatever happened that day and people finding lifelong friends out of a shared interest. Even the hate we used to get is nothing compared to today. It’s just so different. I wish everyone could’ve experienced that time because the ones who did and are still here… well… those boys hold a very special part of our hearts and i truly hope they come back. Even though it’ll be different, it’ll still be a bit the same.

I was a Larrie in 2017. I still remember how all Larries were ecstatic that Louis wasn’t promoting his single with Steve on 1st Feb but instead was with Harry celebrating his birthday but soon there were pictures of him in all tabloids having a party with all of his closest friends from the Gerbers to Adele to Tommy Lee. There were so many explanations floated around, party was not on that day, Louis was also hiding in the back etc etc.

So Louis blew off his work when he was promoting his very first single to spend time with him but Harry had to have a celebrity party for appearances?

The pattern seemed to continue and I had to jump off the Larrie train. It seemed like a lot of smoke of mirrors made by desperate people. I left that part of social media. FITF kind of bought the excitement back so I started treading back into the Tumblr waters. Not much has changed in terms of fantasy, fiction and fandom but the Tumblr Larries have become very openly Harrie and vicious towards Louis leaving the subtlety in the past. The big Larries are all new people and they have built their kingdoms with so many lies. They have skewed so much history to their own whims and fancies. I really can’t believe how cultish it has all become and how much more dumb they sound. Anyway I am glad Louis seems to be thriving despite them.

2017-19 were really hard years for Louis.

I was still reading Larries’ lies about Louis hiding in the back of the stadium for Harry’s concerts during Louis’ own tour. I really couldn’t believe that they would continue making up this degrading, insulting shit for Louis, and that most Larries wanted to believe it.

Their wanting to grasp at straws was a bigger priority than wanting anything good for Louis, after all these years of waiting and doubt, to finally go on his own tour.

Even now, if you check the HLD’s Tumblr for Rolling Stones UK Awards (HLD still gets the most Larrie notes), the highest notes are for the video where Louis answered the question about Harry’s bald head. At an UK award show where Louis performed, and was nominated, and had many more interesting interviews on the red carpet.

Idk man. If I were a Larrie in 2023, with Freddie looking like an exact copy of Louis, and Louis blocking HLD and publicly shaming Larry head canons on Twitter, I would never show my face again.

Personally, I feel like the amount of bad information, fetishizing, homophobia, misogyny, and bad ethics have exponentially increased since 2018, and you’re right, the new big Larries have no love for Louis… they’re completely about retaining their followers. It’s horrifying to be in that head space.

What do you mean "from a trauma standpoint"?

I mean that the people pleasing of the 1989 era, which allowed for the whole Kimye phone call thing at all, was a trauma response from Taylor. One of the pieces of trauma that it was a response to was the 2013 slut shaming.

If you weren't around in the fandom, you may not understand really how bad it was and what it felt like. It wasn't 2016, but it was the next worst thing. When she says "the jokes weren't funny," she means the jokes were not funny. Remember that she'd be invited to awards shows where the hosts mocked her the whole time. She was relentlessly harassed by violent misogyny.. and the worst part is that it was "in the name of feminism."

I've said before that the tumblr blog Your Fave Is Problematic ruined the internet (the creator agrees too), and Taylor was one of the first people on the blog. It was fucking awful. Big feminist icons of the time online decided that John Mayer, of all people, deserved protection from her. That she was setting feminism back by expressing hurt because she was clearly a manipulative crazy person meant to live an anti-feminist stereotype and make money off of it. And people ate that shit up.

Taylor had resigned herself to not having romantic relationships that meant anything until Calvin. And a lot of those feelings of being trapped she sings about when she sings about him, I think, are directly tied to this too.

Everything about the 1989 era, from the lack of country on the album, to the marketing, to the relentless Grammy campaign, to the thousands of interviews, to the squad, to the arguing with both fans and other famous people online... All that stuff was a direct response to wanting it to be different. Hell, even the way she attacked the Kaylors which stoked the flames at making them even worse was out of fear because of the hell the larries put her through.

2013 was hell and owning that, going back to that hurt and reclaiming it... required a lot of healing and maturity. It's one thing to recognize the threads of your trauma, it's another thing to be able to claim them. In Miss Americana she talks a lot about the thread of the trauma from the Fearless era, of wanting to be A Good Girl and who everyone wanted her to be, but she skates over a lot of 2013. Midnights, and in particular Anti-Hero, is the first time we really hear her acknowledge it as tied to her other emotional issues. It's therapeutically speaking so significant. 2000's and Beyond: Modern Fic

In this iteration of Fic History, we’re going to be exploring the fic culture in mega-fandoms from the early 2000’s and beyond. That’s a big field to cover, I know, so each section is probably going to be a bit less detailed than usual in order to make things easier to digest. To begin, we’re starting with:

Harry Potter

I think it goes without saying that the HP fandom is probably the fandom of the 21st century. No book series has become so ubiquitous as HP, and there are still more HP fics on FF.net than from any other fandom. Since HP was published when the internet already existed, most of the fandom’s fics were published online, although a few printed fanzines were created. HP fic is also extremely varied, most likely due to the wide cast of characters and length of time covered by canon lore. You could find fic on anything from coffee shop AUs of the Hogwarts founders to explorations of the main trio’s children when they eventually attended Hogwarts. Like most fandoms with a large internet presence, the HP fandom had its own fic sites, some of which were dedicated to specific attributes like certain ships or tropes, but fic was also posted en masse to multifandom archives like FF.net and AO3. In fact, as of 2017, there are still more Harry Potter fanworks on FF.net than any other fandom.

Twilight

If HP is the fandom of the century, Twilight is probably the fandom of the 2000’s decade. At least in the media, Twifans were portrayed as either feral teenage girls or feral middle-age women, but the fandom is actually much more diverse. In terms of fanfiction, it goes without saying that the most famous fic within the fandom is probably Master of the Universe by Snowqueens Icedragon, more commonly known by its profic title of Fifty Shades of Grey. Snowqueens Icedragon, A.K.A. E.L. James, filed the serial numbers off of her fic and sold it as an original piece of fiction to massive critical attention and success. One Direction

This is the odd fandom out of the bunch, as it’s the only one listed that’s completely focused on real person fic, or RPF. According to FanLore, since there isn’t traditional source material to function as a canon to write fic about, canon in the 1D sense consists of “One Direction's members' original appearance on the reality show, plus their concerts, albums, music videos, video diaries, interviews, books, photo shoots, award ceremonies, other television appearances, band members' and families' personal twitter accounts, media gossip, authorized candid photos and selfies, and unauthorized candid photos by paparazzi and fans.”

RPF already has a bad reputation in fandom spaces, but since 1D is an engineered boy band adored mainly by teenage girls (fandom’s least favorite demographic), the 1D fandom reputation is in the pits (Jamison 2013). Despite this, the fandom is still quite large, and produces a lot of fic, especially on Wattpad, where the fanfic series turned profic After by Anna Todd was published from 2013 to 2014. The most popular ship amongst directioners is Larry Stylinson, or Harry/Louis.

Finally, we have

SuperWhoLock

Behind HP, this is probably the largest fandom on the list, simply because it’s actually three fandoms smushed together: Supernatural, Doctor Who, and BBC’s Sherlock. Fans in this fandom are called SuperWhoLockians. This fandom was especially active on Tumblr in the early 2010’s, and while the main form of fanwork was gifsets, lots of fanfic was produced in each fandom individually as well in crossovers. The most popular Supernatural ships were Castiel/Dean (Destiel) and Wincest (Sam/Dean, who are brothers, hence the portmanteau between Winchester and incest), while Sherlock’s most popular was Sherlock/Watson or Johnlock. Doctor Who is different, as each individual reincarnation of the Doctor is considered a different character, so each Doctor has different pairings, usually with their respective companions or the Master. SuperWhoLock has a reputation for being cringy due to member’s repeated hijacking of Tumblr posts with fandom related GIFs, but now that the fandom is much less active, the cringe has turned into a feeling of nostalgia.

There are so many more fandoms I could talk about, which just goes to show how fandom spaces have only exploded in size as time has passed. Even though these descriptions aren’t the most detailed, I hope you found them informative and interesting!
