─── ⋅ ∙ ∘ ☽ ༓ ☾ ∘ ⋅ ⋅ ───
Note:
Listen to me I’ve never done anything like this before, I have written and sure I have posted one of two things and immediately abandoned them. If you want to give me constructive criticism or feedback please do I wanna get better at this kind of thing.
─── ⋅ ∙ ∘ ☽ ༓ ☾ ∘ ⋅ ⋅ ───
Thorin had sent a letter to Bilbo not too long ago by raven, telling him of his departure from his kingdom and hopefully swift arrival. It had been a year since he had last seen his hobbit.
Thorin had found himself missing his hobbit. Even with the regular letters between them, now It had only been a week since he had gotten the last letter and Thorin had begun to feel a sort of ache in his chest the longer he went without contact from Bilbo.
Now the King Under the Mountain found himself hundreds of miles away from his Lonely Mountain, the one he had left in questionably capable hands, right back were it all began a year ago now, and getting himself lost once again on the roads and in the Shire. passing farms and burrows, even at one point finding himself on the road to brea. He had turned red when he realized, though he wont tell you that, and turned back hoping to find the burrow of his hobbit.
Thorin grumbled as he thought to himself and took another turn down a path he swears he’s seen hundred times before. ‘Now if I can just- have I already been here before?’ Thorin thought, sighing. ‘Mahal, am I even in the right place?’
When Thorin passed a deceptively familiar-looking farm, one he had to have passed twice now, he sighed and swung his pack off his shoulders to fish for a map. Maybe it can help him figure out where he was.
That’s when he heard a very familiar voice. “Thorin Oakenshield, King Under the Mountain, as lost as a chicken with no head.” The voice was full of a teasing tone as it spoke.
Thorin whipped around and looked at the familiar small hobbit, his caramel-colored curls wild on his head, suggesting that he hadn’t done much more than wake up and throw clothes on. The hobbit seemed to be wrapped and almost gilded in gold in the light of the early sun, the old dwarf couldn’t fight himself from blushing at the hobbit.
His undershirt was a buttery yellow, a little warn but clearly loved, and his pants an emerald green that could put any gemstone that the king had seen to shame. The bottom of his pants were embroidered with flowers and other things hobbits seemed so enchanted by. The hobbit had no waistcoat, so his suspenders were visible. He stood not a few paces behind where Thorin stood. Thorin only just began to notice how long he had been staring at his hobbit.
Bilbo was smiling broadly, chuckling fondly at the sight of the bewildered and red faced king. Thorin didn’t wait long to rush forward and embrace his friend in a hug, which the hobbit gladly returned it with just as much enthusiasm. Thorin patted Bilbo’s shoulder affectionately and looked down at him when he pulled away from the hug.
Thorin smiled as he spoke. “Bilbo Baggins, and here I thought I’d have to stumble around here for a day until I found you.”
Bilbo laughed and grasped at the dwarf’s arms as he leaned a little closer before teasing. “Now what kind of hobbit would I be if I let one of my guests stumble his way around here like a newborn fawn?” Bilbo said as he moved to hook Thorin by the arm to lead him up a path toward his burrow. “Let’s get you inside and I’ll find you something to eat! I’m sure you are starving.”
And that’s where Thorin found himself, sitting in an uncomfortably comfortable armchair in the living room of Bilbo’s burrow. He watched the small hobbit as he made tea, to quote, ‘hold him over’ till Bilbo was done cooking.
The warmth that wafted from the kitchen seemed to almost lull the king to sleep. The next time his eyes opened, Bilbo was handing him a warm mug of tea that smelled and tasted sweetly of elderberry and mint And a cloth that held a sweet blackberry tart.
Bilbo headed back to the kitchen to continue his task of making breakfast for the two of them. Thorin stood to follow after him, leaning against the door frame as Bilbo mixed something together in a bowl. He found himself observing the hobbit’s every movement, from the way his curls bounced as he worked to the concentration furrowing his brow.
‘He really is quite charming,’ Thorin mused, a smile playing at the corners of his mouth. ‘The way he moves about his kitchen, so at ease, so… endearing. Why didn’t I see it before?’
Bilbo grinned at Thorin when he pulled himself a chair over. After a brief silence, Bilbo asked, “How are the renovations of your kingdom going?”
Thorin sighed, closing his eyes as thoughts of Erebor’s restoration filled his mind. They had found that the old techniques of his forefathers had been forgotten or abandoned for more useful skills during the time they had lost their home. But Thorin couldn’t help the pride that swelled within him at the thoughts of his people and how he and his Company had reclaimed his home. And how he feels that his hobbit was to thank for that.
Thorin let his voice sound as tired as he felt, as he spoke, “They are progressing well, but it seems many of the secrets of my people have seemingly been forgotten over the years.” He looked at the mug he held, now half full and tart long gone. He rolled the mug in his hands, it being a tad bit smaller than any other mug he was used to. It had flowers and soft things painted underneath its glaze.
“Still,” Thorin hummed and looked to Bilbo now. ‘Have his eyes always been so sweet?’ “It will be grand and restored to the best of our ability.”
Bilbo hummed and went back to cooking. He scrambled eggs in a hot pan. “Well, I wait patiently to see. You better keep me updated properly this time.” Bilbo said with a bit of a teasing tone and smile. Then he stopped what he was doing, looked at Thorin again as he set a plate down on the counter, and started plating food.
“I dare ask, you are staying a few days, are you not?” Bilbo asked. Thorin felt his breath catch in his throat. He had to think a little harder than he was used to, to speak.
“Yes,” Thorin nodded as he spoke. He found himself once again thinking of Bilbo, the way his eyes sparkled with curiosity and care. ‘Why does my heart quicken every time he looks at me?’ Thorin wondered, a bit confused by his own feelings.
“Then, who is running the kingdom in your absence?” Bilbo inquired.
“Fíli,” Thorin replied with a fond smile. “He is capable and eager to prove himself. And I am not one to disappoint.”
Bilbo nodded, seemingly satisfied with that answer. “Ah, well, I am sure he is quite excited, and I am sure Lady Dís is not pleased at your sudden absence not too long after you have taken back your mountain.” Bilbo teased lightly as his eyes shined with mischief.
Thorin found himself chuckling and nodding softly. “No, she is not, but it will be a good experience for the lad to practice how it truly is to run a kingdom.”
“I see…” Bilbo hummed and pulled a loaf from the oven, setting it at the table to cool.
“How has the Shire been?” Thorin found himself asking as he helped Bilbo’s food find its way to the dining room table.
Bilbo’s face lit up happily as he smiled “Oh! Well, the Shire has been peaceful, as always. You know how things can be here, quiet!” He started digging through the cabinets for more plates. “And! I’m sure you saw on your way here but the fields are green with new crops, the harvest looks promising.” He said.
As Bilbo went to grab his cutlery as he spoke he gasped and looked to Thorin before almost yelling. “Oh! Do you remember what I told you happened a week ago well! It had happened again!!Lobelia Sackville-Baggins has tried to make off with my good silver again!”
Thorin watched Bilbo with growing affection and amusement as he animatedly recounted the events of the Shire. ‘He gets so heated over these things,’ Thorin thought, finding it endearing. ‘How could someone be so fiercely protective and yet so gentle?’
They continued to talk as Bilbo and Thorin prepared and set up breakfast. The aroma of freshly baked bread and bacon filled the air. As they sat down to eat, Thorin felt a deep contentment.
As Bilbo went on about the Shire and what had been happening since his last letter to the king only a week ago, Thorin thought to himself, ‘This visit with Bilbo,’ he mused as Bilbo went on about how some children had trampled over his marigolds, ‘will be as lovely as I imagined.’

I Think I Don't Like Gaming Anymore
25 years. It's been approximately 25 years since I've started playing video games as a hobby. The games that left a memorable impression on me as a child or teenager were games like Red Alert 1, Doom, Starcraft, GTA: Vice City & San Andreas, Warcraft 3, Runescape, Little Fighter 2, Worms, Dragon Age, Mass Effect Trilogy, Assassin's Creed 1 and 2, Shattered Galaxy, Rakion, and probably a lot more that isn't surfacing to the top of my head right now.
I spent so much time playing these games. I didn't even play some of these games "properly" - I don't think I ever completed GTA: Vice City. All I ever did was muck around, blowing things up, and causing chaos. But somehow, I could spend hours doing it.
In Rakion (a PvP game), I spent hundreds of hours playing from level 1 to 10. I did that because players were matchmaked into three different level brackets. 1 to 10, 11 to 30, and 31+. Rakion was a free to play game with a cash shop, and pay to win reared its ugly head beyond level 10. So what I did was to always delete my character once it hit level 11, and just repeated everything within level 1 to 10. I had fun.
These days? I get bored and tired after an hour or two.
I started playing The Last of Us Part 1 a few days ago, and I'm already using a trainer to make things easier (i.e. cheat). I can't die, I have infinite ammo, and everything dies in one shot. But why, why am I doing such a thing?
Well, I've started to notice a particular set of feelings that arise within me whenever I play a video game nowadays. These feelings can be things like:
This is a chore
What a pain in the ass
This was only fun in the first hour of the game
This was only fun the first time I did it
What a waste of time
I just want to rush through it so that I can experience the story and complete the game
Crafting, gathering, ammo management, stealth, underwater areas, dark areas, it's all a chore to me nowadays.
Maybe an argument can be made that such mechanics aren't particularly fun to begin with, so my feelings might be understandable.
But what if these feelings extend to core gameplay mechanics?
Shooters - Shooting enemies from behind cover. Running from point A to point B. Getting headshots.
RTS - Collecting resources to build your base. Training up an army. Exploring the map.
MMOs - Travelling great distances. Earning gold. Doing dungeons and raids repeatedly to farm gear and rewards. Dealing with people. Doing dailies.
Core gameplay mechanics might not be a "chore", but they tend to drift towards "this is only fun in the first hour of the game".
I do have some guesses as to why I'm getting these feelings.
There's been no new core gameplay within video games for the past 5 years that have been really solid. I've tried Rollerdrome but it got old after a while. I haven't tried Hi-Fi Rush.
There's really nothing new, man. Every single game is just made up of the same few mechanics, wrapped up in a different skin. Fantasy, sci-fi, anime style. No matter how epic, cool, or amazing it looks, deep down it's just the same old thing all over again.
Games tend to do a very poor job to keep things fresh throughout the whole game. Once you've played a few hours of it, then you've experienced all the game has to offer gameplay wise.
I've been a story motivated gamer for quite a long time, and it's possible that what I've been seeking out are good stories and good experiences. Video games were just the vessel I used to obtain these.
It's also possible that all I wanted was a sense of progression, and the methods weren't important. This is probably why I enjoy mobile gacha games with auto-play functionality nowadays. You get to progress, but you don't need to actively grind. It basically removes the problems of it being a chore, a pain in the ass, and a waste of time. Yet it allows me to progress and experience the story (Honkai: Star Rail is so far, the best game in 2023 for me).
The video game industry, especially in the AAA space, is producing a lot of junk lately. I mean, check out this wall of shame: https://www.reddit.com/r/pcmasterrace/comments/13sjzft/we_would_like_to_apologize_please/
And even if the game isn't junk, it's filled with season passes and pay to win junk, still has to be bought before playing, and has none of the upsides of gacha games I mentioned above.
Everything is liked nowadays. My previous blog post: https://bloodelves88.tumblr.com/post/702607969068662784/everything-is-liked-nowadays
I'm just losing patience, growing old, getting tired, etc.?
I do still enjoy some new games though, but I'm not sure why. They don't seem to be that different, but I still enjoyed them from start to end. The Yakuza series, Horizon Zero Dawn and Forbidden West, The Final Fantasy VII Remake, and Final Fantasy XIV are examples of new games I enjoyed.
All in all, I'm still not sure what to make of these feelings I have. I think I want to set video games aside and play less of it, but it's not easy to just do that for a 25 year old hobby. I doubt I'll ever drop video games from my life completely, but to stop keeping up with video game news, to stop exploring and trying out most of the new games that come out every year - it's going to be a strange feeling. Old habits die hard.

IOTA Reviews: Sole Crusher
Tumblr media
Well... It's finally here... the episode introducing the new bee hero. And what do you know? It looks like I was right about how the new character would be portrayed.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's kind of funny how I made predictions exaggerating what could happen, and they were surprisingly accurate. Isn't that funny?
youtube
Let's just get into the seventh (chronologically the seventh and the seventh episode in the season to air after “Mr. Pigeon 72”) episode of Miraculous Ladybug's fourth season: Sole Crusher. Damn, I hate that a pun this clever was used for the title.
We get to the point pretty quickly with the first scene being Zoe arriving in Paris and getting a tour of the city. She asks to stop at the Dupain-Cheng bakery, where she meets Marinette through some brief Unfunny Marinette Slapstick. The two quickly strike up a conversation.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I mean, it's not like Zoe is the sister of the absolute worst human being in existence, right?
Marinette compliments Zoe's shoes, and she points out that she designed them herself, and wrote every good thing anyone has ever said to her on them. But because she only has one friend, there's only a standard “I <3 U” on the left shoe.
So Zoe leaves the bakery and heads to Le Grand Paris where she meets her mother, Audrey. Unlike how she talked with Marinette, Zoe pretends to be just as snobby as Audrey in order to fit in. She then meets up with Chloe, who criticizes her for having poor person things like a phone without any diamonds embedded in it. And then she sees Zoe's shoes.
Tumblr media
Look, that meme was already dated when it was referenced in Black Panther three years ago. Please don't try to reference memes in 2021, Miraculous Ladybug.
Chloe offers some golden heels while saying that those kind of shoes are for winners to wear and crush the losers underneath. This is the only episode to mention this kind of ideology, and believe me, it gets worse when Chloe decides to teach Zoe how to be like her.
Tumblr media
youtube
Get used to this. This episode is all about demolishing any semblance of likability in Chloe's character. Now that Astruc doesn't have to bother with writing Chloe with decency since she's not Queen Bee, watch as he turns her into an absolute caricature of her former self.
Yes, Chloe has ordered her father to give her a lot of frivolous things in the past, but she has been shown to care about him, like immediately rushing to hug him after she was safe in “Origins” and showing concern for when he was akumatized into Malediktator while apologizing for causing it. For the love of God, one of the first things she did when she allied with Hawkmoth at the end of Season 3 was to have him unto her parents' akumatization. I guess she only cared about her rich parents for their status and not because she actually loved them right?
Next up on the list of Chloe's positive qualities to ruin is her friendship with Sabrina.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
🎶It's seven o'clock in the morning🎶 🎶I can't believe they made this scene🎶 🎶With the writing Astruc's enforcing🎶 🎶It's like he's trying to piss off me🎶
Yep, Chloe doesn't view Sabrina in a twisted view of friendship anymore. Now she's a slave. I'm not exaggerating by the way, he actually said that in a tweet.
Tumblr media
THIS IS WHAT THOMAS ASTRUC ACTUALLY BELIEVES
Okay, so I guess all those times we saw Chloe playing superheroes with Sabrina in “Antibug” and “Miraculer” were just a slave driver playing with their property. Actually apologizing to Sabrina for getting her akumatized in those episodes? Protecting her from the Scarlet Akumas in “Ladybug”? She was just interested in keeping her slave around. I think Astruc may have slept through the slavery unit in his history class. Yes, Sabrina was mostly used as a joke to show how controlling Chloe could be, but there were still semblances of an actual friendship between the two.
Chloe arrives at school and introduces Zoe as her half-sister, despite being the same age and having the same mother. Because I guess we can add basic biology to the list of things the writers don't understand. Now that we're at school, Chloe's friendship with Adrien is next up on the chopping block.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yep, despite being Adrien's only friend and making a big deal about valuing his friendship to the point where she threw a big party just to make sure he wouldn't leave her and risked cooperating with an Akuma to save him, now Chloe just sees Adrien as a rich meal ticket. Two of the earliest episodes to show Chloe had a more compassionate side to her, and they just undid them. Even as much as I hated the episode, “Felix” showed Chloe was willing to cooperate with Marinette and her friends just to find a way to cheer Adrien up on the anniversary of his mother's not-death.
For the love of God, Astruc, 1984 was supposed to warn people about what could happen if they rewrote the past, not encourage people to rewrite the past. He probably finished Animal Farm thinking Snowball really did work alongside the humans, didn't he?
Marinette comes up and Zoe pretends to hate her, leading Marinette to wonder why she did that. She texts Zoe (she gave her number to her earlier) and invites her to a concert on the Liberty, but Chloe finds out. Zoe thinks fast and pretends it's just so she can torment her more. Chloe then takes out a book listing all the ways she can torture Marinette. I wonder if this is a metaphor for the writing process behind most of the episodes last season.
Zoe decides to go outside for some fresh air, and Andre comforts her. Funny how Andre bends over backwards to give Chloe whatever she wants, yet he's willing to actually talk to Zoe like an actual parent. Andre tries to cheer Zoe up, but she talks about her past where she had to put on an act so she would be liked, but (bet you've never heard this before) she just wants to be accepted for who she truly is. The surge of emotions is enough for Shadowmoth to akumatize her into Sole Crusher.
Tumblr media
In addition to having one of the most clever puns for an Akuma name, I actually like Sole Crusher's design. Not only is it a good excuse to reuse Chloe's character design, it makes sense thematically, as Chloe was trying to mold Zoe into a copy of herself. The gold and diamonds also make sense given Chloe's love for shiny things. Her powers tie into the bizarre belief Chloe has about stepping on the winners. Whenever Sole Crusher kicks or steps on someone, she absorbs them and gets progressively bigger, making it easier to do so. While it's not cracking my top ten anytime soon, it's still an interesting character design.
Sole Crusher heads to the hotel to get Chloe, and she manages to get away pretty quickly. Maybe in an alternate universe, she's a track star? For some reason, she runs to the Dupain-Cheng bakery and then... Oh my God... pushes Marinette's parents so they get absorbed by Sole Crusher, before trying to do the same with Marinette.
youtube
When has Chloe ever done something like that? Whenever she endangered someone during an Akuma attack, it was unintentional or a result of her naivety. She was only trapped in Pixelator's dimension because Adrien tried diving to save her, she only alerted Rogercop to Ladybug's presence because she eagerly called out for her, and during “Zombizou” she only tried to throw Sabrina towards the horde of kissing zombies once, and that was meant to highlight her growth. The only person to actually do stuff like this consistently is Lila, but I guess she got vaporized by Big Brother offscreen.
This episode is determined to make the audience hate Chloe by retconning everything about her character while portraying her as a complete monster. As bad as Chloe could get, she was never selfish enough to use anyone as a human shield. This kind of behavior honestly could be explained by saying Chloe was lashing out as a result of losing the Bee Miraculous permanently, but the events of the Season 3 finale aren't mentioned ONCE, not even in the next episode that introduces Queen Bee's replacement! How the hell can you set up the next Bee hero without explaining why the original needs to be replaced in the first place?! And trust me, I'm going to talk about Zoe replacing Chloe later.
Sole Crusher grabs Marinette in her hand, so the Horse Kwami, Kaalki, uses her power to teleport over to Adrien's house and inform him Ladybug needs help, meaning once again Adrien did nothing in this episode before becoming Cat Noir.
At the Liberty, Chloe offers more victims to Sole Crusher in the form of the band Kitty Section (consisting of Luka, Juleka, Rose, Ivan, and Mylene) and theatens the giant golden supervillain she can send her back to Paris, even though she's really not in a position to bargain right now. And she STILL continues to insult her. Do you hate Chloe yet? Come on, do you? The writers won't stop until you do.
After we see Sole Crusher's conflicted emotions, Marinette is set free by Cat Noir and transforms into Ladybug, immediately summoning her Lucky Charm, a shoehorn. They only learn Zoe's sneakers were where she were akumatized thanks to Chloe's ranting, so the episode unintentionally made Chloe save the day. Ladybug breaks into Le Grand Paris and breaks the sneakers where Zoe hid them, using the shoehorn to open a door. So Sole Crusher is de-evilized, Ladybug fixes the damage, and gives yet another charm to Zoe.
Afterwards, Zoe goes to the Liberty, apologizes for the act she put on, all while divulging to the audience her “tragic backstory”.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Of course, everyone welcomes her with open arms.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And right here is where the biggest problem I have with Zoe as a character. I normally hesitate to use this term given how often it gets thrown around when criticizing characters these days, but I really can't say anything else.
Zoe... is a Mary Sue.
For those who don't know, the term Mary Sue originated in a Star Trek fanfiction from 1973 satirizing several self-insert stories at the time. Most of these stories showed a beautiful young woman joining the crew of the Enterprise and immediately gaining the attention of the crew. Mary Sue parodied this character archetype by showing how much she was appreciated by Captain Kirk and Mr. Spock, the latter being driven to tears at her funeral despite his species being emotionless normally.
What does this have to do with Zoe? She has the exact same storyline as Mary Sue in the parody fanfiction. Her mere presence is enough to make Chloe act extremely out of character in an attempt to make her look better, and as soon as she apologizes while giving a frankly vague backstory, everyone just accepts her as their friend, and I mean everyone in the entire class. I'm sorry, but it just doesn't feel earned. Why was she bullied at her old school? What did her bullies have against her? What caused her to stop going along with her peers, and why did everyone turn against her? How the hell did the bullies who put cockroaches in another student's locker get no punishment while the victim was forced to transfer schools? It's an intentionally unclear backstory designed to make the audience feel sympathetic towards Zoe without actually doing anything else.
I want to ask anyone reading this who watched the episode a question: Outside of her backstory, what do we actually know about Zoe?
What is her personality like? She's nice? Socially awkward? We've never had a character like that in Miraculous Ladybug before! Sorry Marinette, Adrien, Juleka, Nathaniel, Mylene, and Marc, there's a new character with more personality than all of you combined!
What are her goals? She wants to be an actress? Great, but why? Even though there's no clear answer for why Marinette loves fashion, or why Alya loves journalism, or why Nino loves DJing, you can still see the passion in their lives when they do something related to their goals. Zoe only says she wants to be an actress, connecting it to her people pleaser backstory (and given how it ended, she must be a terrible actress), and in the next episode, she immediately gets the lead role in a student film.
When Mylene got the starring role in the movie in “Horrificator”, we at least got snippets of her acting skills in the same episode that established her desire to be an actress, which is also implied to be because she was inspired by her father in “The Mime”. She didn't just say she wanted to be an actress and got the leading role. She still had problems to overcome like her cowardice, which threw her own self-confidence into doubt. Here, Zoe just says she wants to be an actress, and is rewarded for no reason the very next episode.
Zoe basically exists only to be a foil to Chloe, and the writers had no idea what to do in terms of a personality, so they just dumped a bunch of extremely likable character traits onto her without thinking of how her character could come off. And like I said, she's a Mary Sue.
I'm not the only one who thinks this. I've seen a handful of posts on this very site calling Zoe a Mary Sue. In fact, I even asked another Tumblr user @anxresi to quote their take on Zoe being a Mary Sue, which I couldn't even top in terms of accuracy. They basically listed off five things that made Zoe a Mary Sue.
She has to have a ‘tragic backstory’ so all the other characters will fall in love with her. Usually within minutes, in the very first episode they’re introduced.
She has to have a supercute design so that the audience at home will fall in love with her. And if they don’t, they’re automatically dismissed as ‘haterz’ even if their objections are purely from a writing POV.
Her only flaw will be thinking too little of herself. “What, lil ol’ me as the Bee Miraculous holder? With my shyness, colorful shoes, chic beret and personalized pink strip in my hair? Gosh, who’d have thought it?”
The contrast to her half-sister will be a constant plot point, with Chloe always getting dumped on. “You see, kids? Bad things happen to bad people. But you see this super-sweet girl over here? She gets a free DAD. Instant FRIENDS. To star in her own MOVIE. The chance to be a SUPERHERO, even though she only arrived last week. Who cares if she has no depth, no personality and barely any reason for being in the show, apart from being a massive ‘Up Yours’ to all the Chloe fans out there?”
What about character development, Mr Generic Zag Guy? “Development? What’s that?! Zoe is already perfect as she is. The only ‘development’ she’ll receive is having her hair done in the first episode she’s introduced. Besides, That‘d’ word is banned here at Zag studios. Why do you think we abandoned Chloe’s stillborn arc so quickly? This is a KIDS show, why bother trying to create a complex character with more than one dimension?”
This is essentially who Zoe is. She's perfect, has no character flaws, has a cute design so the audience will love her already, and was designed only to replace Chloe as Queen Bee. That's all she is.
So the episode ends with Zoe feeling happy at all the new friends she made while we get one of the most blatant attempts of symbolism in the ending card I've ever seen.
Tumblr media
See, look. While Marinette is happily talking with Zoe with the image of Ladybug next to them, Chloe is to the far left with an EVIL purple aura, showing how bad she is compared to how great Zoe is. Only a braindead moron would actually like Chloe over the super awesome and pretty Zoe!
I'll give my final thoughts on the episode in the next part where I analyze this plotline as a whole.

Eugenides, mathematics, and the people that he loves.
or, 12 times mathematics was involved, in some way or another, between our favorite bastard of a king and the people he has made a family out of.
or, that math degree gotta get used  somehow
2.
“If you’re going to lurk from the ceiling, Eugenides, you might as well come down and help me,” Eddis said.
In front of her was a string of numbers that should have represented the entirety of her country’s taxes, but none of it made sense to her. She knew all the basics, of course, but they didn’t expect her to be queen, and by the time she was her father’s heir, she was too busy trying to learn everything else that the thought of learning the intricate system of taxes did not even cross her mind.
She was regretting that now.
“Well, it seemed rude to interrupt your brooding session, Your Majesty,” Eugenides said, landing next to her without so much as a whisper of a sound.
She glared at him in the empty room she was in, having already sent everybody out. Her advisors meant well, but they kept talking over each other in their eagerness to explain this to her, and instead of helping her understand it, that just made the numbers seem even more confounding.
“I was not brooding,” she said.
“If you say so, My Queen,” Eugenides grinned. “Now, do you want me to explain this to you, or was this covered in one of the few classes you did not skip?”
She glared again, but she pointed at one entry, embarrassingly high on the list, and said, “Start there.”

“Remind me, Costis,” the King said, “your father is a farmer, is he not?”
Costis blocked the King’s attack— he still insisted on sparring with Costis every morning, even though he now had an abundance of sparring partners to choose from— and replied, “Yes, Your Majesty.”
The King hummed, and Costis pushed forward, trying to get at least one hit on Eugenides when he was still distracted. Instead of reaching his target, however, his training sword flew out of his hands and he found himself with a wooden sword placed gently upon his chest.
“My win, I believe, Costis,” the King said with a smile. “I think that’s enough for the day.”
“Your Majesty?” Costis asked, disbelieving.
“Yes, Costis,” Eugenides replied. “Come, sit in the shade next to me, and tell me about your father’s farm. The sun is much too hot today.”
Costis frowned, but he knew already that the best way to deal with his King when he was like this was to indulge his whims. So he took the King’s sword, retrieved his own, placed them where the rest of the practice swords were located, and sat down next to Eugenides, answering all of his questions about the way his father determines how much seeds he should buy and how many people he should hire.

Teleus picked up a piece of paper that was not there the last time he left his office, locked with the only key on his own belt.
The paper was filled with numbers and equations from one end to the other, and after skimming it quickly, Teleus can see that it contained the beginnings of a plan on how to sufficiently reduce the Guard with minimal compromises on its function.
Sighing, he picked up the paper and a flagon of wine, and made his way to Relius’s quarters. It would not help the headache that’s already starting to form, but at the very least he would have someone to talk to. And to share wine with.
3.
 Sophos,
I think I caught where that extra one half is coming from. Tell the Magus that it is his fault that this equation does not balance. That extra one half is supposed to be there. You can find the proof attached in this letter.
That said, are you getting better at this quicker than I expected, o Useless the Younger? I should write the Magus to tell him to provide you with harder problems to solve. You have not asked for my help even once in the last few weeks.
 Your friend, Eugenides
10.
“What do you think of that new proof from the continent? That you can find distance by finding an area?”
A few short years ago, Kamet would have jumped in shock. Nowadays, however, he was far too used to Eugenides’s antics to be truly shocked.
“I think, Your Majesty,” he said, “that my topic of choice is poetry and history, and that any discussion about mathematics is better done with your youngest attendant. The gods know he could focus on little else.”
Eugenides waved his hand in such a manner as to fully frustrate Kamet. Truly, only Attolis could manage to cause such contempt in such a little movement.
“I will ask him later, when I want my argument ripped to shreds. But I want to know your thoughts, Kamet.”
“My interest in mathematics is in bookkeeping only, Your Majesty.”
“Ah, don’t play coy with me,” Eugenides replied. “I know you better than that.”
Kamet narrowed his eyes, but the arguments are already starting to form in his head. He briefly lamented the fact that he would not be able to finish his translation work today, because from previous experience, once this discussion started, it will not stop until the bell rings for dinner time, and he has promised Costis that he would not work in candlelight only for the health of his eyes.
Eugenides grinned, like he knew that he had already won this battle. He probably did, that little bastard of a king.
“Fine,” Kamet sighed. “I think that it’s plausible. If the speed is constant, then it’s just a rectangle, is it not? We can then infer that-”
They talked long after that, discussing the merits and demerits of the idea. Eugenides disappeared just before the bell rang to call the court for dinner, however, as if he knew Kamet’s thoughts from earlier and decided to spite him even more.
Kamet couldn’t even be mad about it.
7.
“Do you not believe my story, Relius?” the king asked.
A mere month ago, Relius would not have deigned to answer. A mere month ago, Eugenides would not have told the story. But now, in the time when only men plagued with nightmares are awake, Relius said, “I somehow doubt you managed to calculate the volume of that bath in such a short time, Your Majesty.”
Eugenides clicked his tongue, and said, “It’s just a cylinder. Or close enough to one that it doesn’t matter.” He leaned back on his chair and asked, “Surely you know how to do that quickly enough?”
“I confess I have not practiced that in a long time, Your Majesty.”
“More important matters in your mind?”
Court intrigues and spy networks. Letters written in codes that only he can break and knowledge that he has long since imparted to his queen. None of that matters anymore, now.
Instead of answering the question, Relius said, “Maybe I’ll learn how to do that. After.”
“Maybe,” the king replied. He pulls on the blanket covering Relius’s body, adjusting it so that all of Relius’s limbs are properly underneath it. All four of them.
They didn’t talk again for the rest of the night.
9.
“Two of your trousers are currently being mended, Your Majesty, and three more are in the wash, so the choice tonight is between the blue pair or the deep brown pair. I’ve chosen the blue, and paired it with that coat you just commissioned,” Philologos explained.
“That’s good, Philologos, thank you,” the king said, absentmindedly pulling his undershirt off. He unclasped the cuff of his hook, handed them to Hilarion, who was standing next to him, and entered the bath.
Seeing that everything is well under control, Philologos shared a nod with Hilarion, and then turned to go retrieve the aforementioned trousers and coat.
Before he could do that, however, the king called out, “Philologos?”
“Yes, Your Majesty?” he answered.
“Two added with three added with two does not make eight,” Attolis said.
Philologos blinked, baffled with the apparent absurdity of the statement. He was just about to chalk it up to Eugenides being Eugenides and simply agree with the king, before he realized what was going on.
He blanched.
“I…” he stammered, unsure as to what to say, when Hilarion also realized what was going on and laughed.
“I thought your education was better than that, Philo,” Hilarion teased. “What would your father say, if he knew that his only heir forgot how to do basic addition?”
“I…” Philologos stammered again, trying to find words to defend his honor, but the king interjected before he could do that.
“I am honored, Philologos, that you have chosen to emulate me in this.” Eugenides grinned, before continuing, “Though I wish that you would have chosen something better than my trousers to steal.”
Behind him, Philologos could hear the rest of the attendants snickering, and that was enough fuel to make him shout, “Four! Four of your trousers are in the wash, Your Majesty!” without even considering what that outburst would cost him. He could feel his cheeks turning red, and he gritted out, “Now, if you will excuse me, I will go and retrieve your clothes for dinner.”
He turned around, fully intending to block any and all comments, when the king called out, “Don’t steal this pair too, Philologos!” adding fuel to the laughter from the attendants.
But when he handed the trousers to the king after he had finished his bath, Eugenides pulled him close, and whispered, “If you’re going to steal any of my trousers, take the red one.” A burst of hot air hit Philologos’s ear, the tell-tale sign that the king is laughing. “The embroidery is in gold.”
4.
“Eight ships,” the Eddisian Minister of War said to his son. “Eight ships, and you asked for?”
“Twenty men,” Eugenides replied.
“That’s,” he paused for a moment to recheck his calculations, “two men a ship.” He looked at Eugenides, frowned, and said, “That’s not possible.”
“I didn’t propose to burn all eight of them. Four,” Eugenides said, lifting up his fingers. “Maybe even five if we’re lucky,” he lifted up the one finger he had left.
His father very deliberately did not look at Eugenides’s other arm, which has no more fingers to lift up. “That is still five men a ship, Eugenides,” he said, “without any scouts or people standing guard.”
Eugenides simply shrugged, and replied, “I can do it.”
A year ago, he could. The Minister of War frowned even deeper, and said, “Thirty. Twenty for your plan, five for scouts, four to stand guard, and one just in case.”
Eugenides’s mouth curled in a discontented line, but he sighed and said, “Alright. Thirty it is.”
6.
“It was the type of wheat,” Eugenides mumbled next to Irene’s ear.
They were tangled together on top of her sheets, their legs twined together and their heads pillowed on the same bed. Wheat was the furthest thing from Irene’s mind, but still, she hummed a note to tell him to go on.
“Artadorus,” her husband continued, his eyes still half closed. “He reported a different kind of wheat than what he planted. You charge a different rate for the different kinds.”
Irene hummed again. She would have found out, eventually. She has many people in her tax offices employed to do just that. One of them would have found out the deceit and brought it to her or Relius, and the fraud would have been exposed, just the same. It would not have been as effective, but it would still have reached her.
It was on the tip of her tongue to say that it was not just her who charges a different rate for the taxes, but one glance at his face caused her to remain silent. They could be kings and queens again in the morning, but tonight, they are simply husband and wife.
She rolled over to face him, and said, “Tell me again in the morning,” before kissing him.
He did not say anything about wheat again until the sunrise entered the windows of the room.
11.
"I think a triangle only has three sides, Pheris, and not four," Eugenides said, materializing somewhere behind the young Baron Erondites.
For his part, the Baron Erondites looked at the work he was completing, saw the mistake, and started signing things that he had decided were curses.
Attolis laughed.
"Surely that is not as debilitating as that?"
I would have to redo this whole section, Pheris signed with one hand. The other hand was already scratching things out on his parchment with a speed that truly belies his frustration.
"Oh, I'm sure it's not that bad," Eugenides said, sitting next to him. "You would only have to change…"
A pause, and then Annux of the Hephestian Peninsula hissed out something that would truly shock all the new ambassadors from the Continent and made his wife glare at him for saying that in front of the children. "You need to redo the whole section," Eugenides deadpanned.
Pheris just glared at him, and scratched out, 'I told you so', somewhere in the midst of the mess his parchment was becoming.
12.
"Why do we have to learn this?" the Princess of Attolia complained.
Her brother, also looking dejectedly at his own work, nodded in agreement.
"Because, my little thief," her father said, "one day, you might find yourself on a ledge too far for you to jump, and you have to calculate how many pics you can trust your own skill and how many you have to trust our god for." He turned to his son, and continued, "And you, my future king, will one day have someone telling you that seventeen horses each carrying three sacks of grain somehow amounts to having forty sacks, and you will have to disabuse them of that notion immediately."
The twins looked at each other for a moment, before Hector said, “But we knew how to do that already. That is simple geometry and arithmetics. This is not that.”
Eugenia nodded, and added, “Even Mother said that her own education did not come this far. So, Father, why do we have to learn this?”
Eugenides blinked, before chuckling softly. “I see,” he said, after a while. He sat atop the table that the twins were using to write, and continued, “It seems I have done you both a disservice.
“I ask you to learn this because no matter who you are, whether you are an okloi or a watchmaker or a king or a thief, or perhaps, even the gods themselves, the logic of mathematics will still be the same. There are no lies in mathematics, nor are there deceit.”
He paused there, staring at things that neither Eugenia nor Hector could see. Seconds passed in silence, and Eugenia opened her mouth, ready to bring their father back to the present with a remark, but before she could do that, Hector jabbed her in the stomach and shook his head.
Their patience was rewarded when Eugenides sighed and propelled himself from the table he was sitting on. “But you are right,” he said, plucking the pens from their hands, Eugenia’s first, and then Hector’s. “Both of you certainly already have the skills needed to fulfill your duties. Anything more will just be a fool’s errand.” He jumped up the table again, this time landing feet first and facing them, half-bowing with the pens he took from them just earlier offered in his hand.
“A fool’s errand,” he said, eyes twinkling, “or a quest for the wisest of men.”
Eugenia and Hector stared at their father, and then at each other, before taking the pens from their father’s hand.
5.
In your last letter to me, you told me that a man’s worth is what he is, added to what he does. Then tell me this, Magus. What if that is not enough?
Gen, I thought your knowledge of mathematics is better than that.
If addition is not enough, then try multiplication.
1.
“Ah, no,” Stenides said, looking over Gen’s shoulder. “That three should not be there.”
“No?”
“No,” Stenides answered, pointing at the calculations in front of his little brother. “See how you didn’t carry over that one,” he moved his fingers to the next number, “and so this one should have been four.”
Eugenides looked at the paper in silence for a moment, and then let out a string of curses that he definitely should not have heard yet, let alone repeat. But of course, Gen being Gen, he has, and Sten couldn’t help but chuckle along.
After he finished his string of curses, Gen moaned, “I’m never going to get it.”
“I thought you’re going to be the next Thief of Eddis?” Stenides teased. “How are you going to do that when you can’t even do additions?”
His little brother looked at him with murder in his eyes, however, and Sten quickly raised his hands in surrender. Eugenides’s revenge was already legendary, no matter how young the boy still was.
“I joke, I joke!” he said. Then, he smiled down at his little brother, ruffled his hair, and said, “You’ll get it. I know you would.”

top 10 songs of march
the month where we are still doomed and every day gest a bit harder to survive.
1. King by XXXTENTACION
"leave me alone, I wanna go home
it's all in my head, I won't be upset if"
this song is so good, it hurts my heart to think someone feels just the way I feel about life and feelings. I could put every single line of the lyrics here and this statement would still be working fine. (I'm not doing the best mentally, btw.)
2. Star Shopping by Lil Peep
I had like 4 playlists this month. actually all of them were made for different purposes, and yet I still found my way to this one song that I've been listening to for the longest time ever. one night I was so desperate to fall asleep (but I was terrified because I've got triggered real badly and I knew nightmares were coming), that I started listening to this one. not only did I fall asleep real soon, the song got stuck in my mind so I continued to listen.
3. IDGAF (with blackbear) by BoyWithUke, blackbear
this is a recent find! I found this gem like a week ago and it's been on repeat ever since. I love it so much, the vibes are perfect for this time of the year. spring is just around the corner & I feel so much better just thinking about it.
the lyrics are so good, this song is gold.
4. Night Away (Dance) (feat. Tion Wayne) by A1 x J1, Tion Wayne
the feeling of nostalgia caught me off guard this month. healing and working with myself is suprising me every day. as I'm getting memories back from my childhood, I'm becoming more and more nostalgic and these songs/remixes are such a great way to think of some good memories. this song is super great for boosting your mood, especially if you have partied to the original as well.
5. Free by Tvilling
antoher gem from Benex's streams. I love this man so much. even though this was a long long month, I've listened to the EDM playlist a lot and I'm finding more and more favs from there. it's always great to feel like you're at home - and this boy makes me feel that way. any time I start the playlist, comfort and happiness are the only things in my heart. knowing every single song from the streams is so special, it makes them even more enjoyable! I'm in love.
6. Angels Don't Fuck by Insincere
this song gives me so much comfort. it all started when I was having a pretty bad mental breakdown and it helped me a lot. ever since I've been listening to it when I feel a bit stuck or when it gets too hard to even exist... and I needed support more than ever i these last two weeks (I've just gotten into a train accident - I wasn't injured, I just experienced something real disturbing)
sometimes music is the only thing keeping me sane and alive so yeah. this song is on the list.
7. Pigstep Freestyle by Prince Zuko
I've had like 2 days off work and I played a lot of minecraft in those days. I was listening to an old playlist called "memers" from my first mc phase back when pigstep and the nether update came out. it got me into the mood to grind a bit so I've listened to it on repeat and did a lot. (I'm super proud so here is the list of things I've achieved: I built a honey comb farm; I've bred my villagers; traded a lot to get diamond armour and tools, got loads of books; I upgraded my dia helmet and boots fully; I terraformed the front of my house; I've been adventuring and found a new village nearby; I've done some achievements too! I'm trying to collect as much as I can)
8. Queerball by McCafferty
there won't be a month where I'm not saying silly stuff about me having trouble to fall asleep and listening to this song. that's just how it goes, I don't even force myself to fall asleep anymore, I'm just laying down listening to music/streams and facing the consequences the next day. it's super annoying but I don't know what else to try out.
9. Koloběh lásky by Lafi
this was an accident. the one time I'm able to fall asleep instantly while listening to music, I pass out so hard that the next time I wake up is at like 4am with the song playing on loop. so yeah. anyways I still love this one and it always reminds me of that one tiktok about gnf.
10. HAUNTED by Isabel LaRosa
this is a big mood. I found it on tiktok, and that one video with bikes made me want to ride a bike again, until I remembered I'm terrified of them, lol. there is no thing in this world I'm not afraid of.
however the song slaps and is a great choice if you need to by hyped up! I'm loving it.

AN: This is my prompt for @liliesoftherain and I’s server April prompt. I thought I would do a Greek Gods with Japanese fusion. I haven’t edited it thoroughly just yet, I will do it later when I have time.I cut this prompt short cause I had a whole ass plot figured out before Final weeks hit then I was too late to finish on time and so I’m posting it as is. I still hope you guys enjoy it though <3. Read rest of the prompts: HERE
Warning: Contains explicit sex and smut. Read at your own discretion.
Gods & Godesses:
Aizawa- Hades
Keroberosu- Cerberus. It’s now a three headed cat cause I said so.
Haru- Another “potential reader” Persephone. Her name means Spring.
Shikaku- Basically an OC who is suppose to be Demetor. Her name means Harvest.
Hawks- Hermes.
Endeavor/Todoroki- Zeus
Hadajuban- a white layer worn underneath a kimono
------------------------------------
The Messenger God known as such to mortals, nicknamed Hawks by fellow gods, and Keigo Takami among his closest companion, smiled indulgently as he tried not to show his irritation. He really couldn’t be mad at the Spring Goddess as she ran around trying to gather her necessities to leave the underworld, she was too wholesome. Her childish sunny smiles and giggles echoed throughout the desolate world as she ran.
She abruptly stopped in the middle of her packing.
“Shouta, do you think I can take some pomegranates with me?” she asked the dour god eagerly.
The God of the Underworld paused in his playtime with Keroberosu, the three-headed cat.
“I don’t care, but you better hurry up. It’s rude to keep people waiting,” Shouta said as he spared a glance at Keigo before he resumed playing with his cat.
Keigo raised an eyebrow at Aizawa. When people picture the God of the Dead, they certainly don’t expect a man like him. Many times, Keigo made the trip down here and he spotted the God sleeping on a makeshift futon, while souls passed through. Though, Aizawa certainly resembled the part with the appearance of being half-dead with baggy eyes.
Keigo didn’t make the trip here often before the debacle. But, now with seasonal change, Haru was ordered to return to her mother so that spring and crops would flourish again. Though humans all suspected Aizawa kidnapped her when in reality the Goddess had wandered into the underworld, and Aizawa wasn’t bothered enough to order her to go home. Keigo suspected that Shukaku or the Goddess of Harvest had spread the tale of kidnapping and rape to her priests who in turn spread it throughout the lands. After all, she was the only Goddess who regularly had contact with the mortals.
Keigo turned to observe Aizawa as he lured Keroberosu with a toy and the black feline excitedly chased the bait.
Yet, what was suspicious in all of this was how quickly Aizawa had married Haru. While delivering messages between Todoroki, Shukaku, and Aizawa, in that short amount of time they had gotten married, consummated it, and Haru had even eaten seeds of the underworld. Preventing the Goddess from returning the surface world for 6 months. Clearly, the man cared far more about his interloper than he let on at the beginning.
“I’m finished!” she announced cheerfully. Keigo sighed with relief. Finally. He was anxious to go.
Aizawa petted Keroberosu one last time before he turned around to face them both. He approached Haru and caressed her cheeks.
“I will see you later,” he rasped quietly to his wife. Haru, in turn, smiled gently.
“Try to get some sleep while I’m gone ok?”
Aizawa grunted and kissed her forehead.
Keigo looked away from the intimate scene as his heart clenched with jealousy. The easy affection between the Gods was something to be cherished not torn away in their world of immortals.
The Spring Goddess skipped happily to Keigo.
“Ready?” he asked.
She grinned and nodded as she held up the basket of goods for the trip home.
Keigo gathered the Goddess in his arms as his red wings sprawled out from behind. He flapped them a few times.
He could feel the harsh glare from Aizawa, Keigo couldn’t help but smirk. He carefully maneuvered Haru and bridal carried her. The glare seemed to intensify like Aizawa wanted to rip his soul out and cast it into Tarutarosu. Keigo sweatdropped and flew off before Aizawa could comment. Haru screamed out her goodbyes as she twisted around to wave to her husband.
Hours later Keigo let down Haru in the shrine of Shukaku that was her home.
‘This is my chance.’ He thought.
Shukaku didn’t like any Gods to linger around her dwellings or shrines. Her wrath was worth fearing especially since her daughter had gotten married, she was even more short-tempered. However, he noticed how for a few hours she would be distracted by the arrival of Haru, caring for her daughter.
He gave a salute to the young Goddess before he flew off. Just in time too as Shukaku barreled to her daughter and gave her a tight hug.
He encircled the temple a few times before he spotted her. He made his way to the temple and landed on top of it, to get a perfect bird’s eye view of the worshippers who were making their tributes. Keigo felt his heart skip a beat as he finally spotted Y/N. She was a bewitching human. He had noticed her a while ago when making a delivery to Shukaku who had noticed his wandering eye and shoved him away in a hurry. So, a few days after that encounter, Keigo had disguised himself as a peddling old man to get a glimpse at Y/N who would take care of the incoming devotees.
She wasn’t perfect, her skin too tan evident of her farming origins. Her clothes too torn and shabby, but her smile and gentleness as she accompanied the disguised Keigo enchanted him. The swell of her breasts took his breath away when she bent down to offer him a meager meal of bread and potatoes. She was at first another peasant that hung around the shrines before the priests took advantage of her youth and put her to use. The priests themselves were too busy appeasing the Harvest Goddess to deal with the hungry and the poor.
Yet, all he wanted to do was adorn her in silk and riches. Why didn’t anyone steal her away was a mystery. Didn’t anyone else not notice the beauty behind the dirt-covered fingers and peasant clothing?
Ever since that day, Keigo would whisk away after delivering Haru to her mother to catch a glimpse of his beauty. He watched for hours as she worked in the shrine before finally, she headed home for the day. However, Keigo knew he couldn’t just watch anymore, his desire to possess her overwhelmed him. He had to have her and soon. Keigo smirked, he knew exactly how to do go that, and he flew off to make the appropriate preparations.
A few days later, Keigo straightened up his extravagant yukata as he kept a close eye on his entourage that was accompanying him. All of them were nymphs ordered to participate in this charade by him. This was necessary he can’t have Y/N’s family suspect him for even a second. The neighboring villagers gathered around to watch the wealthy man in his riches make his way through the slums. They had reached their destination and with inhumane finesse, Keigo lept off the horse, made his way to the bowing man who’s home they had stopped in front of.
“My lord. How may I help you?” the peasant asked as he bent low.
“You are Y/N’s father, aren’t you?” Keigo asked despite already knowing.
The peasant looked up in surprise before looking down in a hurry.
“Y-yes, I’m her father. Is she alright? Or has she done something to offend you, my lord?”
Keigo shook his head.
“I have something to offer you. Let’s talk inside.” Keigo conveyed with this head towards their shabby shack of a house.
Y/N’s father shook himself and quickly made his way inside with Keigo following close behind him.
Keigo fought hard to keep the frown off his face as he looked around the surrounding. His beloved Y/N grew up in such a dwelling when clearly, she should have been a queen.
Y/N’s father offered him a seat and even some drinks and food to the rich man who just refused.
“I’ll cut to the chase. I want to ask for Y/N’s hand.”
The peasant gasped incredulously.
“My lord, I cannot accept that offer. She is in Shukaku-sama’s service. I can’t with good conscious deprive of her duties,” he begged.
Keigo smirked. “Oh yes. The Goddess that still starves your family despite your devotion. Remind me how many of your crops survived this year? Or do you and your wife still starve yourself every night so that Y/N and her siblings can have something to eat?”
Y/N’s father looked away in shame.
Keigo seized the opportunity, seeing the peasant’s weakness. “Give her to me. I’ll adorn her like she deserves. She will sleep every night with a full belly. All the children that are blessed to Y/N and her future generation after won’t ever starve.”
The peasant was now shaking, just a little more.
“Even you. As Y/N’s immediate family will it not be her husband’s duty to take care of them? I will make sure all your children prosper. Though, I cannot make your crops grow. I can give you gold to buy all the food you will ever desire.”
Y/N father’s felt his heartache at the dilemma. For far too long the family has been struggling with meager rations and crops.
“I have to ask since she is my eldest daughter. Will you treat her with the respect a wife deserves? You won’t cast her aside, will you?”
Keigo felt his inwards burn with fury and felt the need to bury his claws and talons into this mortal. Even throw some of his sharpened feathers to turn him into minced meat. He forced himself to calm down as he breathed a deep breath through his nose.
“Of course not. I have made a journey all the way down here to ask for her hand from her father. I wouldn’t do that for a woman I was just going to set aside.” Keigo reassured the mortal.
Y/N’s father wiped the tears that welled up and solemnly nodded.
Keigo felt the first genuine smile since he came here threatening to creep upon his face and he became serious once more.
“Get her ready in a week. I will send supplies to make sure she’s ready for the journey,” Keigo said as he made to leave the shack.
Y/N’s father interrupted, “but my lord what will I tell her?”
Keigo shrugged and let a small smile bloom on his face. “Tell her she’s going to become a bride.”
With that, he hurriedly made to leave the slums that rank of animal feces, tracked mud and dirt everywhere. Keigo gathered his entourage as he made his way back to his temple that was worshipped by his cult. There he celebrated his win with a cup of sake.
“To Y/N and I’s future! May she forever remain lovely and exquisite as she does now.” He toasted brilliantly before drinking his sake.

Keigo couldn’t help but sneak peeks at his bride. He was right she looked impeccable in the bridal clothes he had provided. Y/N was clearly nervous as her hands shook and she also snuck peeks at her husband. Keigo would flash warm smiles to her each time she did. Y/N would quickly turn away as she blushed.
With the wedding party settling down, Keigo was anxious to get Y/N alone. It had been hours of festivities as minor deities and nymphs visited disguised as humans. Y/N’s family, of course, wasn’t allowed to attend, instead, she had said her goodbyes in the morning before she was whisked away for preparations.
No, what his attention was currently focused on is discerning the secrets underneath the kimono of his lovely wife. When the last guest had retired to their home, Keigo helped his wife up. He took her to the room in his temple that would be their shared room. The futon was laid out along with some sake. Keigo quickly put away the sake as he didn’t want Y/N to get too drunk to enjoy their night.
He offered her his hand as he brought Y/N closer to him.
“Did your mother explain about your duties to your lord husband?” he whispered huskily in her ear as he toyed with the obi of her kimono.
Y/N’s breath hitched as she felt his warm breath sending goosebumps throughout her body.
“S-she did. She also told me that it would hurt,” Y/N whimpered out.
Keigo let out a chuckle.
“Y/N, I’m going to make you so delirious with pleasure you won’t feel a thing,” he promised as he undid the knot on her obi and took off her kimono.
The white layer underneath showcased just a bit of Y/N’s curves that he ached for so many days to touch and hold.
Keigo grabbed her face as he softly kissed her and coaxed Y/N to respond. Slowly and reluctantly she did as he subtly taught her the art of kissing. While she was busy, Keigo let his hands wander getting the hadajuban off her body. He slid the robe off and let it flutter down onto the tatami.
He pushed her down to the futon, still kissing her as she let out quiet, reluctant moans that Keigo cherished. He made his way to her neck, leaving behind marks showing his claim on her. Kissing the tops of her breasts, he caressed her thighs that had her keening for more. She grabbed his shoulders and tightened her hold on him, not knowing what she needed at that moment. Luckily for Y/N, Keigo's favorite type of lover to have were virgins. He loved the way they got all excited and needy from a few touches, he knew exactly what she needed.
He removed his own kimono before switching positions with Y/N to settle her on top of him. Y/N blushed as she felt her husband’s member hot against her juncture. She balanced herself by putting her hands on his chest and tried to get off.
Keigo grabbed her waist before she could.
“Stay. This way it will hurt less.”
Y/N started breathing erratically as he started to pluck her nipples and grinded against his hand when he checked her readiness. He could feel her virginal barrier still intact.
“I-I’m not sure what to do,” she confessed as she looked anywhere but at her husband.
When Y/N felt him shaking, she looked down to see him chuckling.
She felt his hands tightened around her hips. “I have you so don’t worry,” he reassured. “Though, you should probably start by putting my cock inside.”
Y/N spluttered at his straightforwardness and felt her face get even hotter. Keigo smirked, delighted she could be undone by a word, though by the time he’s through with her he’s going debauch her so thoroughly that she wouldn’t even look him in the eye for weeks.
Keigo reminded her to start by thrusting and grinding below her. Y/N whimpered in return as the contact sparked tingles through her core. She hesitantly grabbed his member, the temperature, and hardness of which perplexed her. Keigo exhaled, trying to remain in control as he watched the mortal he was obsessed with, fulfill his wildest fantasies.
She couched her hips nearer so that her entrance she was so intimately familiar with lined up and slowly sank onto his cock. Her breath hitched as he stretched her out so wonderfully, giving a pleasure that she had only felt through her fingers. Yet, her fingers couldn’t compare to the fullness that his cock inspired. The strange sensations of his ridges also provided extra stimulus.
Keigo held her steady as Y/N let his member in and out several times before finally letting him in deeper. Y/N licked her lips in nervousness as he was only a few inches in and the rest of him still to go. She hesitated before changing her mind and was about to withdraw. Keigo seeing Y/N’s second-guessing herself when she had made such good progress, made him impatient. He tried to wait he really did, but sometimes even an immortal can be tempted by earthly pleasures. He thrusted in fully, as he ripped through her hymen and filled her to the brim. Y/N choked out a gasp at the slight pain, but mostly pleasure as her body slumped forward.
“Come on wife show me what you can do,” he said as he nudged her to move.
Y/N straightened up and moved her hips. At first, her rhythm was all off and she kept her thrusts short and uneven. Still, she gained more and more confidence as she found what she liked and fulfilled her needs. Soon her body naturally started doing a wave of sorts as her hips rose and fell on his cock. Y/N gasped and moaned as sweat started dripping from her forehead and down her body. Keigo reached up and licked the salty moisture before it disappeared into the valley of her breasts.
She was truly a magnificent sight as Y/N evolved from a peasant girl into a God’s woman right before his eyes.
Y/N finally finding the rapture she was looking, sped up, and starting actively bouncing. Unable to keep his hands to himself, Keigo held the bouncing globes in his hands as he swirled his tongue and suckled. That proved to be too much for Y/N as she let out broken groans and clenched her eyes shut. The sensations exploded and overwhelmed her mind as Keigo helped her ride it out from below. She collapsed on top of him as her body rested.
Keigo helped her move to the side and spooned her from behind. He grinded into her back, his cock still pulsing with need. Moving Y/N’s hair out of the, he kissed her neck a few times before plunging his cock back into her. Keeping her flushed against his body as he had his hand over her waist to keep her still as his thrusts rocked her body back and forth.
She concealed her screams into her futon as he set about a harsh pace, faster than the one she had been used to. He stealthily trailed his hand down to her pussy. Her clit was well lubricated due to the moisture that gushed out each time he pulled out and slammed back in. Feeling himself get close, Keigo started rubbing her clit frantically, wanting to feel her walls squeeze him and greedily suck his seed into her womb.
Y/N despite muffling her sounds, got louder and louder, screeching as she came once again. Keigo groaned and nestled his face into her shoulder as he released his cum into her. Y/N groggily felt herself being tucked in beside him and a blanket soon covered them both before she drifted off to sleep.
Several hours later Y/N was hastily woken from her rest for the third time that night as Keigo took her over and over. As she keeled over from yet another orgasm, she blearily looked at her blonde husband who was panting above her and swore she saw his eyes turn gold and red wings erupt from his back.

Galactica, Chapter 74 (Group Fic) - TheDane/Veronica
A/N: Click here if you’re looking for previous chapters (or here if you’d rather read on AO3). 💫
Previously: Galactica shut down for the holidays, and Bianca turned Courtney’s shitty day around.
This Chapter: Christmas Eve. Fame plays hostess for Juju and Detox’s family, Bianca and Courtney jet off to Puerto Rico, Violet spends the evening with Sutan, Raja and Raven, and Pearl thirsts for Dahlia.
***
“Patrick?” Fame called over her shoulder, a big porcelain vase on the table in front of her.
“Yes darling?” Patrick was sitting in an armchair, his finger holding his place in the crime novel he was reading, Charles curled up on the floor in front of the crackling fireplace.
“What do you think of this?” Fame took a step back, showing off the greenhouse bouquet she had arranged, their gardener bringing them in after his rounds, snow covering the ground outside. “I was hoping they could be the centerpiece for tonight?”
They were upstate, in what Karl had jokingly started to call The Farm one summer. In reality, it was a mansion with several acres of land, the incredible garden the reason for the nickname, though Karl had insisted it was because upstate New York was basically Hicksville.
Fame and Patrick had bought it forever ago, the property supposed to be a real estate investment, but when they had visited it to oversee the remodel during the fall of the year they got it, Fame had fallen in love instantly.
She adored The Farm, loved the open land, loved the space that reminded her of her childhood’s free roam, loved that Charles had all the space in the world, the property so big that no one ever bothered them while they were there.
“I think that’s lovely dear,” Patrick smiled, taking a sip of the spiced eggnog the chef had made. “Juju’s going to love that.”
“Good.” Fame smiled, a moment of happiness washing over her body. Juju and Detox were coming up for Christmas, bringing their children along, the bedrooms already prepared for them.
When Detox and Juju had accepted her invitation to join them upstate, Fame had been overjoyed, spending the holiday with her friends instead of family so much more enjoyable, and best of all, it required absolutely no flying.
Unlike the Manhattan townhouse, The Farm was decorated in a traditional Christmas red and green, a fresh cut actual pine tree set up in the parlor, copious amounts of gifts for Kelly and the twins already under the tree.
“I’ll go check up on the chef.” Fame put down her garden shears, quickly drying her hands on her tea towel, collecting the scraps for the compost out back. “Make sure they’re cooking the Brussels sprouts correctly.”
The night's dinner was a wild lemon and honey salmon, a spinach salad with goat cheese and beets, the dessert spiced tea-poached pears for the adults and a sundae bar for the kids.
“And the mac and cheese?” Patrick raised an eyebrow.
“Of course,” Fame smiled. “I specifically instructed the chef to go for the mega size Kraft. The little ones should know it’s Christmas too.”
In reality, Fame had requested a complete restock of what Patrick lovingly called the kids cupboard, a whole section dedicated to the Sanderson kids, Kelly always going straight there the second she stepped foot inside. Just because she was a teenager who rarely attended family events anymore didn’t mean that Fame would forget about her.
“The sleds are ready to go too.”
Fame had never wanted kids of her own, but she loved and adored her entire chosen family, especially the little ones. Spoiling them had been one of her favorite pastimes since they’d met, when Kelly was still a chubby little baby with a passion for sticking jewelry into her mouth.
Today, she’d planned a lovely afternoon of fun in the snow for when everyone arrived. Fame had even bought a new snow set, the pure white Prada demanding to go home with her, her new mittens lined with rabbit fur so she could truly get down and dirty while building the snowman she hoped they had time for.
It was one of the most liberating things about The Farm, the acres of land meaning that there was a sense of privacy she could never feel in the city.
“And did you go for the wood?”
“Of course I went for the wooden sleds,” Fame rolled her eyes, Patrick so often playing stupid on purpose just to rile her up. “The antique German design.” There was no way Fame was going for anything but the best, and Julia and Owen deserved the best sledding experience money could buy, gourmet marshmallows and Jacques Torres hot chocolate already in the kitchen ready to go.
“Mmh?” Patrick smirked, taking another sip of his egg nog, and Fame went over to kiss him, just to wipe it off his face.
***
“Kelly Sanderson! Don’t you forget your scarf!”
“Yes mom,” Kelly rolled her eyes, but snatched her scarf, putting it around her neck before walking towards the house with her gym bag over her shoulder, and Juju couldn’t help but smile.
They were emptying out the car, the drive upstate a complete pain since she had been nauseous the entire time, Detox driving while Kelly was in the front seat, so Juju had been alone in the back with the twins because someone had to keep an eye on them, and Kelly refused.
“Okay champ,” Detox looked at his son who was still in the car, Julia standing on the snow-covered ground in her Frozen jacket. “I’m going to unbuckle you, but that doesn’t mean that you can-“
“Bye dad!!”
“Fuck!”
Juju laughed as Owen ran as fast as he could towards the front door, his sister right behind him.
“We got them!”
Juju turned to see Patrick call from the door, a big smile on the man's face, Fame right behind him.
“Your death wish!” Detox yelled, and Juju smiled before digging back in, her husband quickly gathering enough suitcases to make his first trip up to the house, Juju taking a moment to enjoy the blessed silence of private property upstate.
She fished her phone out of her handbag, a sense of relief washing over her when she saw that Bianca had texted. They had only spoken once last week, when Juju called her to apologize for the dinner party pile-on, and Bianca said it was okay, but she also seemed a bit rushed and distracted. Juju was hoping that it was just work, that she wasn’t genuinely mad, but she couldn’t be sure, especially since she hadn’t responded to any messages the night before. Looking at the messages today, though, it really did seem like they were good.
JUJU: Hey there. Thinking of you, hope you’re good.
JUJU: To be clear, I was thinking of you because I got up to take a very large dump.
JUJU: :-D
JUJU: Hehe
JUJU: <3
JUJU: OK goodnight! xo
JUJU: Merry Christmas Eve, lady! I love you.
BIANCA: Love you too, kiddo. Sorry for being MIA last night.
BIANCA: I’m taking Courtney to PR for Christmas, we’re heading to JFK right now.
BIANCA: Tell the monsters that I owe them some presents when I get back.
JUJU: Oh wow!! Have fun!!!! (And trust me, they will collect on those presents, lol)
She sighed, slipping the phone back into her bag, thinking that perhaps she should keep Bianca’s vacation plans under wraps for now. She turned towards the house, watching Fame on her knee, unlacing Julia’s shoes. Yes, better not to be the messenger for this particular news.
***
“So...is it everything you imagined?” Bianca asked, a wry grin on her face. She’d been a bit shocked when Courtney revealed in the car that she’d never flown first class before. She thought that surely someone as cute and charming as her had been slipped a free upgrade or two by a flight attendant trying to hit on her.
“It’s perfect.” Courtney tilted her champagne glass towards Bianca for a toast, her eyes taking on that slightly glazed, naughty look as she sipped on her third glass.
“Perfect, huh?” Bianca asked, clinking her glass lightly. “Then I guess you don’t want another present…”
“Wait, no...I do!” Courtney exclaimed, suddenly looking so serious that Bianca couldn’t hold back her cackling laughter.
Drunk Courtney was turning into one of her favorite people, the comically exaggerated faces she made when her defenses were down too cute for words.
“Oh, well in that case…” She reached into her bag and pulled out a box wrapped in sparkling pink and gold.
“How did you fit that in there?” Courtney asked, letting Bianca take her glass so that she had both hands free for the large gift, examining it closely. “Are you Mary Poppins?”
“Yeah, that’s me. A g-rated singing nanny.”
“Hot,” Courtney giggled, and Bianca gave her a stern look. “What, I like sexy nannies. Maria Von Trapp...Fran Fine?!”
“You’ve gotta be kidding me.” Bianca shook her head, amused.
“Oh no, am I being naughty? Are you gonna spank me?” Courtney’s eyes glittered.
Well, this was an unexpected turn. Perhaps something to explore when they weren’t flying thirty thousand feet over an ocean, surrounded by people.
“Open your present.”
“Yes, ma’am…” Courtney said, making Bianca laugh again as she tore into the package, first pulling off the excessive ribbons and bows (Joslyn really shouldn’t be trusted with that kind of thing) and then the glittery paper. She lifted the lid on the box, revealing 5 brand-new designer bathing suits, all from this year’s hottest resort collections. Her eyes lit up. “Ooooh, wow! This is much better than the plan I had.”
“What was your plan?”
“I was just gonna go without a suit,” she said, shrugging a bit as she fluttered her lashes.
“Huh.” Bianca’s brow furrowed in mock disappointment, adding, “Yeah, no, I like your plan better, give these back.”
She reached over and attempted to swipe the box from Courtney’s hand, but Courtney clutched it greedily to her chest.
“No! They’re mine now!”
Bianca laughed, leaning over to press a kiss to her cheek, just as Courtney grabbed her face and went right for her lips.
“Thank you, B. I love them. I love you.”
“I love you too, sunshine.” Bianca rested her forehead against Courtney’s with a happy sigh. “And I can’t wait to see you in them...or out of them.”
***
“Are you sure it’s okay that I’m not helping?” Violet asked. She was sitting on a silver bar stool and feeling absolutely useless, her fingers drumming on the marble breakfast bar.
Raja and Raven’s apartment looked like something from a catalog, big art pieces hung everywhere, fresh flowers in vases even though it was December. Violet had spotted the heavy oak Raja preferred, and the green and gold she gravitated towards, but it was clear that Raven was the main decorator.
“Of course,” Raven smiled, flashing her teeth over her shoulder. She was standing at the counter, filling up the sink so she could rinse off their dishes.
“Let her have the fantasy,” Sutan grinned, putting the empty tray he was carrying down, Raja right behind him. “This is the one time of year Raven pretends she’s the perfect housewife,”
“Fuck off.” Raven flipped him off, “I’m always perfect.”
When Sutan had told Violet he usually spent Christmas Eve with his sister and Raven, Violet hadn't been surprised. What had surprised her was when Sutan told her that Raven insisted on cooking every year. It had been a simple meal, roasted chicken and potatoes with gravy, but it did really seem like Raven had made it herself, Raja in charge of buying the dessert.
It was the first time Violet had celebrated Christmas Eve with anyone since she was 17, and while it was very different from what she usually did, which was wine and a movie, it was nice.
“You are, Princess,” Raja smiled, pressing a quick kiss against her hair as she dropped their dishes. “Now, does anyone want another drink?”
“Me,” Raven grinned, and Violet had to fight not to show the surprise on her face when Raven just grabbed the dirty dishes. She had never thought Raven would be someone who did chores, who’d willingly get her hands dirty.
“I’m driving tomorrow, so no,” Sutan was leaning against the counter, a smile on his lips. He was wearing a blue turtleneck sweater, and Violet had to admit that he looked stupidly hot in it.
“Actually…” Sutan paused, narrowing his eyes. “Raven, what’s going on with your nose?”
“Her nose?” Raja tilted her head, looking at her fiancée. “What do you mean?”
“It looks different. There.” Sutan pointed with his pinky at the edge of her nose.
“She seems normal to me.”
“Can’t you see it? Here, I’ll adjust- Let me push her head back.“ Sutan was just about to reach for Raven’s chin, when he was cut off.
“Hey!” Raven pulled away, “Crazy agent, I’m in the room.” She raised an eyebrow, her tone sharp, “I’m trying a new makeup technique.” Raven pushed Susn’s hand away from her face. “Is that a problem?”
“Of course not…”
“Good,” Raven rolled her eyes. “Now can we please get this done so we can watch a movie?”
“Sure.” Sutan rolled his eyes too, grabbing a dish towel before bumping his hip against Raven, making her yelp, laughter filling the room.
Violet let out a breath of relief she hadn’t even realized she had been holding, the knot in her stomach slowly releasing. She was probably overreacting, a childhood of tense Christmases just under her skin, but it had almost felt like Raven and Sutan were about to get in a fight.
Violet took her glass, a smile on her face as she took a sip of her wine, the uncomfortable feeling thankfully already fading.
***
Earlier, Courtney had enjoyed a healthy buzz from all the first class champagne, but then she fell asleep for half of the flight, and by the time they got to the resort, she felt refreshingly, deliciously sober, closing her eyes to feel the warm, fragrant ocean breeze blow in through the windows.
As Bianca directed the hotel staff with their suitcases, Courtney wandered over to the glass doors, eyes widening when she peered out at the terrace.
“B! Omigod, is this an infinity pool?” She threw open the doors and stepped outside, where a table was set up with a romantic, candlelit dinner. But even better, what was clearly a private infinity pool, which made her so excited she squealed with glee. “I’ve seen pictures of those but I never thought I’d see one in person!”
Bianca appeared in the doorway, a smirk on her face as she replied, “It’s not an infinity pool. It’s an infinity hot tub. The pool is down those steps.”
Courtney giggled, already slipping off her shoes to feel the heavenly warm water. She sat down at the edge of the hot tub, letting her legs dangle into the water while she gazed out at the gorgeous view, the gentle waves under a night sky sparkling with stars. When she mused last week about wanting to go to the beach, she certainly wasn’t imagining a private beach at this posh resort. But for once, everything in her life had worked out perfectly. All because of Bianca, who was now chatting with the hotel manager about their meal.
“Es esta la comida? Todo es vegano, verdad?”
“Si, of course. I hope everything is to your liking, Señora.”
“Es perfecto. Gracias.” She pressed some bills into his hand, adding, “Feliz Navidad!”
As soon as he left, Bianca turned back to Courtney, head tilting curiously when she took in her enraptured expression. “What?”
“I just think it’s sexy when you speak Spanish,” Courtney explained, biting her lip.
“Oh yeah? That’s what gets you going? My shitty high school Spanish?” Bianca asked, strolling towards her, dimples deep in her cheeks.
“Uh huh. I like the accent. Say more things…” Courtney leaned back, lashes fluttering, as Bianca laughed and pretended to think real hard.
“Hmm…” She settled in beside Courtney at the edge of the hot tub, slipping an arm around her waist and pressing a kiss to her shoulder. “Dónde está la biblioteca?”
“Ahh, yeah, that’s it,” Courtney growled, and Bianca laughed some more.
“Tu eres una gringa loca…”
“Uh huh…wait, what does that mean?”
“It means you’re a crazy white girl.”
“Oh. Yeah, fair.” Courtney cupped Bianca’s face in her hands, pulling her in for a kiss. Things were just starting to get a little heated when Courtney’s phone began to ring. She had a brief moment of panic before realizing that it was her personal phone, not her work phone. And since very few people made phone calls anymore, she was fairly certain that it would be her parents.
Coming out to her parents had been strange. She knew already, from how they reacted to Ben’s coming out when he was just 13, that they would be fine with her not being straight. But Ben hadn’t been dating someone nearly 20 years his senior.
So she was nervous, more than she’d have admitted, when she finally told them everything that was going on in her life--that she was dating, or rather in love with, a woman.
A woman who was, incidentally, a famous fashion magazine editor many years older than her.
Turned out, it was even more of an anticlimax than she anticipated, Mum giving her some bland platitudes about how love is love and Dad telling her to make sure she takes her vitamin D.
Which at first seemed like an innuendo, but actually was just him being his usual health-conscious self. Either way, they seemed both unsurprised and unbothered by the whole situation, which was a relief, she supposed. It was strangely reminiscent of when she was 16 and she’d announced that she wanted to graduate from high school early and go to America for University. Measured, unemotional support.
Courtney reached for her bag, pulling out the phone and answering, her family’s face popping up on the screen as she tried to figure out the time difference. It must already be Christmas morning in Brisbane.
“Hi, Mum! Happy Christmas!”
“Hello darling!” her mother cooed, elbowing Dad and Ben on either side of her, who she’d clearly forced into position, sitting on the sofa with the Christmas tree behind them, the picture of suburban bliss. “Happy Christmas!”
“Happy Christmas, love!” said Dad, pretending that he wasn’t thoroughly engrossed in whatever crime novel Courtney could see open on his lap.
Mum poked Ben again with her sharp elbow, and he scoffed.
“Yeah, yeah. Happy Christmas. How’s your rich girlfriend?” Ben asked.
“Great. How’s single life?” Courtney shot back, and Ben opened his mouth in mock offense.
“You fuckin’ cunt-”
“What was that, dickhead-”
“Kids!” Mum interrupted, putting on her best scolding voice as Courtney and Ben both broke out into giggles.
“She knows I’m kidding, Mum. Calm down.”
“I’m perfectly calm,” Mum said, rolling her eyes. “I’m just trying to have a pleasant conversation with my daughter, thanks very much.”
“Thanks Mum,” Courtney said, kicking her feet in the warm water. “It’s fine, though. It wouldn’t be Ben if he wasn’t giving me shit.”
“That’s called love, ya slag! Appreciate it!” Ben cut in, and Courtney blew him a kiss.
“Well darling, we just want you to know that we miss you terribly, but we’re so happy that you’re having a nice vacation. Right?”
“So happy,” Ben echoed, sticking out his tongue.
“And we’ve been talking about it, and-” she patted Dad on the thigh, then hit him harder when he didn’t say anything.
“Oh, yes. Ahem. We’ve been talking about planning a trip to New York next year,” Dad said. “How does that sound?”
“That sounds fantastic!” Courtney exclaimed. She hadn’t seen any of them since a quick trip to Australia last spring, before she moved to New York.
Bianca sat down beside her again, silently handing over a glass filled with ice and some kind of milky liquid along with a sexy wink, just out of camera range.
“Guys, check out the view!” While her family exclaimed over how beautiful it was, Courtney took a small sip of the drink, eyes widening with delight. “Omigod, this is like Bailey’s but better. Cheers!”
“Cheers,” Bianca murmured back.
“Hi, Bianca!” Mum called loudly. “Thank you for the wine!”
Apparently, Bianca had sent a whole case of high-end wine to her family home--and even signed both of their names on the card, although her family knew for damn sure that wasn’t something Courtney could afford.
“Um...hi. You’re welcome,” Bianca grinned, giving a quick, friendly wave and then leaning back out of frame, tilting her head towards the table with their food. Courtney nodded, reaching over to squeeze her thigh.
“Mum, thanks for calling. But we should go, we have dinner here and it’s getting cold.”
“Alright my love,” Mum said, smiling warmly. “Have a wonderful night. So long, Bianca!”
“Bye, Mrs. Jenek. Merry Christmas,” Bianca said, and Courtney giggled behind her hand.
“Mrs. Jenek…” she snickered, and Bianca grimaced, then put a hand on her hip.
“Well...shut up, I’m from the South. That’s just what we do.”
“You could at least say ‘doctor.’ She has a Ph.D.”
Bianca facepalmed, and Courtney laughed again, kissing her on the cheek. It was adorable how much she cared about making a good impression on Courtney’s family. “I’m just kidding, she doesn’t care about that stuff.”
“I care, though.”
“I know.” Courtney nuzzled into Bianca’s face. “And I love you for it.”

“Hey! I saw that!” Trixie gasped, pointing at Kim, who had just skipped a square on the Monopoly board.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about.” Kim smirked, leaving her car piece as she took another cookie.
They were all gathered around the coffee table, mugs of hot cocoa and Katya’s Christmas cookies on plates, a crackling fire playing on the TV, music playing from the speakers.
“You’re cheating,” Trixie looked around. “Say something!”
“I didn’t see anything, sugar butt,” Katya smiled, her knitting needles in hand. She was weirdly good at Monopoly, Katya dominating the majority of the board. When Trixie had asked her how, and what her strategy was, Katya had simply grinned and told him it was simply how it was done in Soviet Russia.
“Pearl, what about you?”
“What?” Pearl looked up from her phone. “Oh. Sorry. No.”
“Who are you texting?”
Pearl smiled. “No one.”
“Not again,” Trixie groaned, not even interested in whatever girl had managed to capture his best friend’s attention for more than two seconds. “Pearl please. It’s Christmas.”
“Relax Trix,” Pearl grinned, leaning over so she could press a kiss against his cheek. “You’re the only one for me.”

PEARL: Was just thinking about you...so I thought I’d say hey ;)
DAHLIA: Oh yeah?
PEARL: Uh huh
DAHLIA: What were you thinking about?
PEARL: Mostly I was hoping to be suffocated by your thighs real soon.

DAHLIA: Right now, my thighs are stuck to the plastic cover on my grandma’s couch...but thanks.
PEARL: Hot
DAHLIA: Lol

PEARL: Hey guess what?
DAHLIA: You’re horny and wanna fuck?
PEARL: Yes
DAHLIA: Patience, darling
PEARL: But also...it’s midnight. Merry Christmas.

Remembrance of Things Present
One of mine...
Tumblr media
The gloryhole in 89 Napier Street was the repository for practical things not necessarily needed immediately to hand: the scorched and rickety ironing board (the iron standing on its heel on the shelf above); left-over rolls of wallpaper; a canopy of coats cascading untidily from too few hooks; the two books (Universal Home Doctor and Family Bible); a bashed brown tea caddy, minus its label, that held buttons, wooden cotton reels, a selection of sewing needles, hair grips, press-studs on their cards, folorn biros with bitten ends; the Ewbank (at an earlier date), the reconditioned Hoover now in its stead. And mum's handbags. Old ones bulged with insurance policies, family snaps, the one £5 Premium Bond and the the three £1 ones, grave papers, mass cards, cast-off compacts with cracked mirrors or broken clasps, and almost-but-not-quite empty jars of Pond's cold cream. And the little cylinders of fake gold that held the stumps of greasy, muted-pinky-maroon lip sticks. It was all illuminated by a bare low-wattage bulb.
The gloryhole was, basically, under-stair storage. It was accessed from a door in the corner of the living room. Once the door was opened, you faced a narrow underdrawn space that sloped upward from left to right, following the contours of the stairs. In front, where the height permitted it, a shelf ran around the space. Under it were the old, two-pronged coat hooks. Mum's discarded handbags dangled by their frayed straps from those Victorian coat hooks, smothered by coats. They made occasional forays out into the light, when documents needed consulting or prayer cards needed re-homing. To the left of the door, down one-step, the space retreated into an increasingly confined wedge, so that the smaller objects had to be shoved into the deepest part of the recess and the taller ones stood immediately adjacent. The gloryhole was seldom decorated: it always lagged behind the rest of the house by at least two or three colour-schemes. Occasionally, when its yellowing paint became too depressing, it was freshened up by left over emulsion. The gloryhole housed the left-over wallpaper from various rooms - but never enjoyed a Polycell make-over of its own.
From the vantage point of 2017, Napier Street as our family home is long-gone. So are my parents; dad in 1995, mum a decade later. Equally long-gone are those old handbags with their stash of yesteryear's oddments. But, as I beetle along towards old age, the inherent power of those distant objects to seems to grow exponentially. The handbags and their associated evocations perhaps most of all.
Pond's cold cream. I don't know if it still exists. When I was a boy, it lived in small, glass, oval jars with bakelite screw lids. It was not gloopy or waxy. It was a reassuringly viscose white fondant, and had always the imprint of mum's last finger-scoop. The texture was cool, smooth and soothing. Its fragrance was of mum. Or maybe it was the other way round. A discreet scent of jasmine with distant lilies. It was soft on the palms and immediately made skin more malleable, less friable, less care-worn, more translucent. I can sympathise with her fondness for it: less a cotton winders' hands, more of a princess's. I used to have occasional dabs of my own: less a scrawly schoolboy's hands, more of an aesthete's?
In one or other of the bags there was a ladies Ronson lighter – it still had a working flint but its petrol-infused lint had long since dried out. I used to enjoy the dry, rasping spark with electric flare. Not so much a burning smell as a mechanical one. And then there were the compacts. They were usually smudged by the old lipsticks, their hinges encrusted with their own pink-blush powder. Indeed, the insurance policies, prayer cards and the faux-satin linings of the handbags were similarly smudged. The dull gold-coloured compact, the one with the cracked mirror, had a thin flat disc in it – satin one side and mildly padded on the other. Practically all the powder was gone from the insert. Little bevels of it remained where the side and bottom of the pan met. But the pad was still redolent of dustings and pattings. The powder was an anhydrous mist, different from the silky puff of Johnson's baby powder. Matt rather than shiny, the pad gave a satisfyingly muted pat when applied to the back of your hand. It had a fragrance, too, different from the cold cream, but complementary. The aroma was a pink carnation.
Mum was a delicate creature in some respects – allergic to anything other than gold jewellery. In this, I am not her son: I can wear any base metal, though my fondness and preference is for silver. Anything other than butter on her bread made her nauseous. Wartime had been a torture for her (the chemical coarseness of margarine, you understand). She had to trade all manner of coupons to secure enough butter. I sympathise with that. Her choice of butter was always Lurpak but she'd tolerate Kerrygold or Anchor if it was demanded of her. Stork – which the adverts claimed was indistinguishable from butter – was relegated to cake-making. Rightly so. Vile. Only desperation would make a person use it on bread.
Mum's repertoire of soaps was as limited as her butter.
Pears (those amber ovals) she liked – but it was too pricey. Imperial Leather (“Simon, Bermuda”) was also valued but equally pricey. I don't recall it featuring anything other than rarely – probably when it was on offer. We were a family of six, with four blokes, you see: that's a lot of soap. So, the mundane soap was a Lever Brothers stand by: Sunlight. With lanolin, even. I had no idea what lanolin was – but mum could use it on that delicate skin. This was in the days before hypoallergenic was a even a word, still less a range of products. Sunlight soap came in fat, cumbersome, rectangular, pale magnolia cakes. Really, it was very unfeminine: great half-charlies that were too big for the hand, unless you were a navvy or a coal miner. They had a wide groove on their upper surface, with a cursive 'Sunlight' stamped in it. I don't know if Sunlight is still going: it had a retro makeover many years ago but I can't recall seeing it in decades. The gradual demise of the C2 working class probably doomed it to extinction. And as for lanolin, people finding out that it was the oil from sheep's fleeces no doubt undermined its appeal, somewhat. Sometimes it's best not to know: when I hear what goes into mum's old Oil of Ulay (now sans oil, and simply Olay for copyright reasons, I think), it is cringeworthy.
But lanolin. I recall coming face to face with it a few years ago on a walk to the Water Meetings and Quaker Bridge in Barrowford. Summer time. No azure flash of kingfishers racing along Pendle Water that trip, but as I forked right and headed up the road into Blacko to follow it homewards, there was the buzz of clippers in a field. A Landrover was pulled up, with trailer uncoupled. The trailer sported on- /off- ramps, a generator, and a tall pole, attached to the top of which was a flexible bendy cord. At the end of the cord was the source of the insistent buzzing – sheep shears. The trailer was adjacent to a sheep pen, in which dozens of ewes jostled half-heartedly for position, and peered blankly out. I stopped to watch proceedings and, after a minute or two, the farmer came over, opened the gate, and invited me in.
And so we stood, the three of us. Me, the farmer, and the sheep shearer. And I learned about shearing, fleeces, and sheep. The shearer travelled from farm to farm (hence the Landrover with its bespoke trailer) making his way through Wales, Lancashire, Yorkshire on a pre-arranged timetable and route. He was netting £2 a fleece – and he had each of those pliable ladies, and some cantankerous ones – nabbed, shaved, and released at no more than 90 second intervals. The farmer penned the sheep ready, so there was no delay, and they contracted for a minimum number, so farmers with smaller holdings rendezvoused at the farm where the shearer was to set up. Prices for fleeces rose and fell – they weren't bad that year, as I recall, but sheep need shearing whatever the price.
The bewildered ladies were unceremoniously up-ended and plonked on their ample bottoms, whilst the young fella planted his muscular legs and gripped them, and set to work with the clippers. Mostly, they were subdued once he had them: perhaps reassured by his evident skill and no-nonsense approach. That always worked with me when I was a boy: the sound of the airplane clippers, the smell of 3-in-1 oil, and the firm purpose of the barber. Short back and sides and sparse conversation. Mind you, I don't think the barber netted £2 a scalp back in the day.
The sun shone, the sheep skittered off once fleeced, and we three chatted. Soon my eye was drawn to the large grease spot on the wooden trailer. Lanolin, live and in-person. Handy for soap making, handier still for shedding the filthiest Lancashire weather: these sheep were well set up for inclemencies. I noted, too, that the shearer was wearing moccasins. As the farmer explained, the best shearers wore moccasins. Their suede nap gave some purchase on the slippery grease and their firm pressure was kinder to sheep. Lots of younger men were sporting trainers now, he said, but he didn't rate them. They were not good. The risk of injury to sheep, and man, was increased. I found myself glad that the shearer stood fully congruent with his occupation – no flirting with any Nike or Adidas innovations. Real sheep shearers do it in moccasins.
After the family home was sold and mum and dad went to live in Lomeshaye Village, in one of the old-folks' flats, mum's predilection for Imperial Leather resurfaced. There was always a bar in the bathroom. With just the two of them (kids all gone) the economies necessary for a family of six, on a wagon driver's income, were less stringent. Imperial Leather as pensioner indulgence! One of the things that most endeared me to those lozenge-shaped bars of buttermilk hue was the little foil label that conjured up the decadence of the Romanovs. It was my understanding that the label was there to prevent the soap leaving a mess on the sink ceramics or soap dish: you stood the bar on its label. As the soap wore down, the label stood proud and the soap was no longer in contact with the sink – hence, no mess. Perhaps because we were very plebeian, the soap was never label down. You announced the fact that you were using it by having the label showing.
For me, nowadays, picking the soap up, lathering it under the tap, releases not so much a fragrance as a wave of nostalgia. Imperial Leather's fragrance has elements of sandalwood and the richness of plant oils – it's mildly exotic and suggestive of luxury. Which is, no doubt, what Cussons were aiming at. But for me, it mostly carries aromas of mum. It's powerfully evocative. Aromas are.
I recall a visit – with mum – to Gawthorpe Hall. It's one of the places we'd scoot off to for an afternoon of cultural noseyness, and cake. The cafe was lodged in the stable block and featured home-baking and pots of tea. Ideal for us. After a leisurely brew and news-swop, we were about to go and explore the lovely Elizabethan pile: I decided to make a visit to the lavatory first. The tea room was above, the toilets below, so I skittered down the stairs and found the Gents. The soap was in an old-school wall dispenser: fingers under, palm operates a rectangular squirter. One squidge was enough: the years receded and I was age six, it was dinner time, I was standing at a child-height sink in St George's RC Primary School, Vaughan Street, Nelson, washing my hands so that Mrs. Ingham (a diminutive tyrant) would not throw me out of the dinner queue. The soap dispensed in the Gawthorpe toilet was the same amber-coloured, antiseptic liquid that Lancashire County Council used in its school thirty years before. The power of scent created a wormhole in space-time and drew me through it, irresistibly. That power can be used to advantage, though. You can elect to make the journey. Fragrance can open the portal, on demand. If liquid coal-tar soap can take me to primary school, other fragrances can take me elsewhere.
4711, for instance. That eau-de-cologne can transport me to Köln, and the year 1976. It's a school exchange trip and I'm in Germany, staying with a family from Mayen: we're on a trip to Cologne. I've been up the cathedral tower and seen the Rhine bridges and I'm looking for a present for mum. On Glockenstrasse, at number 4711, stands an impressive perfume factory and shop – home to 4711. The original eau-de-cologne. Echt Kölnisch Wasser. It's still there – flagship shop of the perfume house, and it still glitters with possibility. I bought mum a bottle of the eponymous 18th CE perfume and she wore it ever after. Generally, she kept it in her current handbag (before they were, successively, relegated to the gloryhole). She'd dab it on her hanky and freshen up with it on car trips. As a perfume, 4711 has had an odd evolution over the 200 plus years of its existence; it was, originally, a men's fragrance for the prestige Houses of Europe. More latterly, it has been a women's fragrance – but 4711 indicate it as unisex. I agree. The scent is of citrus and wood that carries a fresh, sharp finish and has enduring undernotes. For me it's an everyday scent: it lives in my sports bag, for application after swims. It's also my travel fragrance and comes with me on every trip, near or far.
As I age (just clocked 56, Not Out), I seem to be developing a deepening appreciation for my past and how it has shaped who I have become. I heard once that making sense of your life is only possible when you look back over it – I recall an analogy that compared it to running your fingers over a fish's scales: they lie smoothly when stroked in one direction but are likely to tear your flesh if stroked in the wrong one. I can see connections, recognise how events and people shaped my experiences. I know I hold threads together, personally. I weave my own cloth - but on a loom I inherited. More tellingly still, some elements of the pattern, some of the aesthetics that inform the weave, some of the yarns, were given to me. I'm the child of weavers in more ways than one.
I can find, too, there's comfort in the sureties of the past. Like the familiarity of an old pair of slippers (not that I wear slippers), the quiet resonances of childhood are reassuring. I think we like continuity, as a species. We tell stories. We create in our own likeness. We look to where we came from to make sense of where we are and to decide where we want to go.
I'm conscious of my heritage. Not (I think) conditioned or stultified by it, or forever harking back to a mystical Golden Age that exists only in the warm fuzziness of a smug and delusional imagination. But I know I make choices which ensure there are tokens of continuity that I can carry with me into my everyday life. Mostly, they are mundane. And I like that, too. It's too easy to confuse what's important with what's valuable, unless you guard against that possibility. The richer you are, the more imperilled that discernment is: I've safeguarded myself against that risk very well!
My tokens are trivial. It's good that they are.
I think of the tea caddy spoon – it's in my kitchen, as it was in mum's kitchen, and as it was in her mum's kitchen before her (c/o a pre-WW II holiday to the Isle of Man): or there's my 'ice-cream' spoon – courtesy of Margaret Pepper and the Raj (well, the North Western Railway Volunteer Rifles, circa 1920). These tokens are a continuing connection with people now gone. They are stirred (if you'll forgive the pun) by everyday use.
I note, increasingly, that I am becoming my parents. I look like dad. Really: peas in a pod, chip off the old block, and so on. I look in the mirror and he smiles back at me. I look at my physignomy – and his fingerprints are all over it. My driving style evokes his. In some situations, I can sense him near. Curiously, he underpins my confidence in situations from which his natural diffidence would have disbarred him. If I stand tall, it's because he raised me. As for mum, she's around most days. Wimbledon Fortnight, she practically moves in. It was ever ‘our time’ - I’d rock up with whimberry charlottes, or strawberries, and we’d sit on the edges of chairs for hours and hours as Nastase, Connors, Becker, McEnroe, Ivanisovic, Sampras, Federer and Billie Jean King, Martina, Steffi and the Williams sisters thwacked balls back and forth. I miss her acutely then. And we both missed Dan Maskell, together. She’s at my elbow at breakfast when I make a pot of Yorkshire Tea (there's another evocation!); when the Imperial Leather is handled at shower time; twice weekly, in the men's locker room at Crow Wood, after a swim. Perhaps it's fortunate that the evocation is a personal, rather than an universal, one? (Otherwise, explanations might prove difficult).
I don't know if the trivial and potent associations that so flavour my life – 4711, Imperial Leather, and two old spoons – will evoke the same responses among my nephews and nieces and their respective kids once I'm dead. It’s open to doubt. They don't live cheek-by-jowl with them, as I do. It matters not. They will make their own. As things stand, I'm the orphan in the world, now mum and dad are long dead: the comfort blanket offered by fragrances and spoons is mine, and very probably mine alone.
There's quiet comfort in that, too.

“Fifty.”
Zanri says to himself as he counts the last piece of gold coin in his satchel. The sun is just preparing to send off its last ray of light, on the small island of Khenarthi’s Roost, just south of Elsweyr.
A month he has settled here in the small town of Mistral, although his definition of “settled” is very loose. Multiple times he had to come and go from the inn as he’s not able to continuously pay for rent, what with his inconsistent income not making things easy. And returning to Elsweyr mainland isn’t an option.
A month ago he arrived here, on his attempt to flee from his abusive, drug-addict parents who kept leeching off his earnings. It wasn’t a decision that he made lightly, as it hasn’t always been that way.
--
For the first 15 years of his life, Zanri al-Anaqi had a decent childhood, born in a humble Khajiit family who made living as traders. It wasn’t too small or too big of a business, just enough to feed the married couple and their only child. Young Zanri inherited his father’s archery skills and his mother’s caring and generous heart, and he proved it when he killed his first deer at age 13 from one ricefield length away, and grew love of working and giving to the local community.
It didn’t last, and the family’s luck ran out.
Their trading business suddenly started to lose clients, for whatever reason still unclear to this very day. Zanri’s father made all possible efforts of reviving their only source of income, but to no avail. At this point young Zanri was already making his own earnings, whatever small it might be, from doing community work and hunting animals. Most of the coins he kept for himself, but seeing his family work starting to decline he decided to help out both of his parents financially.
2 years later Zanri found himself as the sole financial support of his family. Whatever efforts his parents had committed to get their previous business back on its feet ultimately ended as they’d completely run out of savings. The 17-year-old Khajiit had to triple or even quadrupled his work just to make sure they all had enough food each day to survive. And not rarely he had to give up his portion of daily consumption just so his parents could have something to eat.
Fell into depression, Zanri’s parents opted for “less desirable” sources of income, even if it included thievery, robbery, skooma and gambling. None of them wanted to choose that path, but it was not like they had choices. With heavy heart Zanri let his parents do whatever they wanted.
But it took a turn for the worst.
What was once a healthy family in Elsweyr turned into a growing center of criminal activities. Zanri’s father became addicted to drugs, alcohol and gambling, especially seeing just how much coin he could farm from the first two. Zanri’s mother wasn’t much different.
But the real issue for Zanri was that they kept taking his earning from him even though they’d already made more than enough. Zanri hadn’t followed his parents trail of earning money from illegal ways, still holding true to his moral compass of being a lawful good citizen of Elsweyr, who enjoyed doing community work and earned honest gold out of it.
Numerous times he’d tried to reason with his father, reminding him of what they were in the past, that he wanted them to be a proper, law-abiding family again. But Zanri’s father had lost it, often not hesitating to throw punches when his son was trying to talk. And it got worse day by day as his father got even more addicted to liquors and substances.
After 8 years of living in a dangerous household, not even being able to survive on his own, what with his own parents constantly snatching 90% of his honest income and physically abusing him, Zanri packed up his belongings and snuck out at dead midnight. The decision wasn’t made on the spot; for weeks he contemplated if he should just stay and keep trying to turn things back to normal, if he just tried harder, but in the end he realized that his chances were minimal.
--
Zanri has just finished selling his hunting results; 3 small rabbits and one wolf hide for the local clothier in Mistral. He wishes his labor were paid a bit more, but it’s not his place to ask. His rent is due tomorrow and evidently fifty gold isn’t going to cover it, even if he gives up food. While the tavern owner provides food at affordable prices, it is offset by the high rent fees.
Zanri returns to his room, leather armor drenched in sweat and boots covered in dirt and sand. He sets his rusty bow by the nightstand and immediately throws his exhausted body on the bed. Not even bothering to have dinner first since he just wants to sleep after a long day outside.
Every night he wonders if shouldn’t have left. If he should just stay with his… family. And every night he has to remind himself that he should not turn back.
Morning comes and Zanri immediately starts packing, ready to spend the next few nights outside the city again. He meets with the tavern owner near the entrance and pays 40 gold, then apologizes for not being able to pay the rent in full before leaving the building. After spending the remaining 10 gold for morning breakfast at the market, he leaves the city through the gates.
Until an unknown voice greets him.
“You look capable.”
Zanri stops in his tracks and turns his head towards the source of the voice. A male Khajiit in black leather armor with gold eagle engravings, crossed arms while leaning on a stone wall near Mistral gates. His red mohawk hair shines bright under the morning sun.
“…excuse me?”
“Got stones in your ears? Of course this one was talking to you.”
The mysterious male Khajiit starts approaching Zanri, but Zanri takes precaution. He slowly moves his hands closer to his back where he hides his dagger, until…
“Now, now, there’s no need to go blade and blood this morning. This one simply wishes to ask for help, and looks like you’re a little low on coin. Perhaps we can help each other.”
“Perhaps, what do you need?”
Zanri slowly lowers his guard around the mysterious Khajiit, he maintains a keen eye on body language. Though overall the unfamiliar Khajiit doesn’t seem to be much of a danger to him. It is rather eerie how or where he finds out about his financial problems, however.
“This one is with the Aldmeri Dominion. One of our ships recently crashed on the west side of this island. We could use extra hands on helping the survivors.”
“Well I know one thing or two about being a field medic…”
Aldmeri Dominion isn’t an unfamiliar name in Zanri’s ear. The Elsweyr-Valenwood-Summerset alliance is pretty much known by almost any Khajiit by now, but Zanri hasn’t been one to meddle with political things or anything of its sorts. While he doesn’t have interest at all in actually joining the ranks, he’s pretty curious about their history and how they managed to unite three Tamrielic races under one banner.
And it’s a rare moment for him to be directly approached by one of them.
“Very good. We could use your skills. Do not worry, this one can make sure you are paid for your efforts.”
“But why me, of all the people here in Mistral?”
“This one knows a good individual when he sees one.”
“Hmph.” Zanri scoffs at his wordplay. While not fully trusting him, the Dominion Khajiit seem like a generally good individual, and Zanri is in need of some coin to provide him with basic necessities. “Fine, I’ll play along for now.”
Zanri and the Dominion Khajiit sets off from Mistral, heading straight to the west side of the island.
“By the way, this one hasn’t caught your name.”
“Zanri. Zanri al-Anaqi. What about you?”
“Razum-Dar, but you may call him Raz.”

Manga vs Anime: Episode 27 “Igogusa”
Okay, so I just can’t seem to keep up with the anime speed so I’m behind again. Maybe I’ll manage to do better after the GK manga break. Anyway let’s start with Ep 3 of the 3rd series… which is the 27 Golden Kamuy animated episode.
I’m pleased to admit they made an effort to follow the manga as they animate this episode...
Tumblr media
...but ultimately the result isn’t so good.
Some data first.
This episode last 23:40 minutes and has only an the ending. It covers the last panel of chap 139 and 4 other chapters of the manga, chap 148, 149 & 150 for a total of around 61 pages (I’m discounting the covers) basically covering the end of Vol 15.
The episode is titled ‘Igogusa’, which is actually the title of chap 149, chap 148 being ‘Roots’ and chap 150 being ‘Remains’.
And now into the anime.
SOME MORE ABOUT SEA LIONS
Manga: Asirpa’s group has apparently skinned the sea lion as they’re now stretching its skin, Asirpa giving Shiraishi informations about it. Kiroranke talks with a Karafuto Ainu who’s willing to buy the skin and tells them of a place in which they can sell the meat. Shiraishi acknowledge they need money as Hijikata isn’t around anymore to provide him with it.
Tumblr media
Anime: This scene is completely removed in the anime.
My two cents: Normally I’m against cutting scenes but I understand how the anime might not see much importance in this one as it’s basically an info dump that confirms how Hijikata used to give Shiraishi money and that the group now needs it.
THE FOX FARMING
Manga & Anime: Asirpa’s group goes to sell the sea lion meat to a breeding facility for foxes. Kiro asks the man there if he knows about an Ainu village in that area. The guy says it was right there 20/30 years ago but it disappeared prior to the building of the breeding facility. As Asirpa questions Kiro about it, Kiro explains the village was her father’s village and her father’s mother’s village, and her father’s maternal grandparents as well. As Asirpa asks where everyone went Kiro then explains Japan and Russia crushed the village between them due to the Treaty of Saint Petersburg, which caused the Japanese who were living in Karafuto to leave it and most of the Karafuto Ainu to leave with them to end up dying due to an epidemic that hit Hokkaido. Wilk and his parents though couldn’t go to Hokkaido because Wilk’s father was polish so they remained to Karafuto. As for the Karafuto Ainu who left for Japan, the surviving one returned to Karafuto but none managed to return in Wilk’s village. Kiro fears the Ainu in Hokkaido will meet the same fate. He says though that Wilk saw a light shines within Asirpa. Asirpa asks Kiro to explain her why Wilk betrayed the Ainu then and he promises that she will find her answers through the travel through Karafuto. As she moves away Ogata then questions Kiro. They’ve confirmed Nopperabou was Wilk and that he left behind a code only his daughter can solve so, even if others were to gather the skins, as long as they’ve Asirpa the others can’t find the gold. Also, if instead is their group who get the key, they would be even more in advantage. As Kiro points out Asirpa doesn’t know which is the key, Ogata wonders if she either doesn’t remember or is lying. Kiro says not to force her so as not to cause her to distrust them. She’ll mature in Karafuto and will tell them on their own. As they say so Shiraishi talks with the fox seller of the fox business.
There are just some minor differences:
- In the manga, the breeding facility was introduced as a place where they would buy sea lion  meat in the previous scene. As that scene was cut, in the anime they added Kiro’s voice saying he heard the place would buy the sea lion meant.
- In the manga, Asirpa says ‘a breeding facility for foxes?’. In the anime this line is cut and only the signboard tells us where we are.
- In the manga, when we see Ogata as Kiro is telling the story about the Treaty of Saint Petersburg, we see Ogata but his face is completely dark. In the anime they chose to have the camera focus slowly to Ogata who’s behind Kiro but his face is not visible merely because he’s turned.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
- In the manga, when she’s told Hokkaido Ainu might met the same fate, Asirpa sweats and seems nervous. In the anime the light in her eyes tremble but she doesn’t sweat and she looks determinate.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
- In the manga when Kiro said that light still shines we can see light shine above him. No shining light is visible in the anime.
- In the manga Asirpa sweats quite a bit as she questions Kiro, the font also hinting she’s upset and confuse. Her expression eases a little as Kiro pats her head, and she looks at him as he smiles at her, the image viewed from above. In the anime she seems just angry and she doesn’t sweat. She keeps on frowning as Kiro pats her head, her eyes apparently not on him, and Kiro’s expression unclear as the image viewed from below (he might be smiling he might be not).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
- In the manga Wilk is in the distance but not shadowed. In the anime they show Wilk up close but heavily shadowed.
- In the manga Ogata is at Kiro’s side when he talks with him. Although both Ogata and Kiro’s face are shadowed, Kiro’s face is shadowed more heavily. In the anime Ogata moves behind Kiro, not at his side, and talks from behind him, his face shadowed while Kiro isn’t.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
- In the manga Kiro said that if they were to let the time in Karafuto mature Asirpa she would tell them the key on her own. As he says so his image is a bit odd, half of his face heavily shadowed. In the anime instead Kiro trails off after saying ‘and if this trip in Karafuto matures her…’ before we’re shown an odd still image of Kiro. Only at this point, on that still image, Kiro finishes his sentence.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
- The final dialogue between Shiraishi and the one working at the fox facility is cut.
My two cents: The art is really bad with the character seeming more similar to Barbapapa than to their usual selves.
Tumblr media
Young Wilk, in addition to not being cute as his manga self, is supposed to be clinging to his mother’s arm.
Tumblr media
The transition from Kiro talking to Asirpa to him talking to Ogata is done by showing first Asirpa, then a sleeping fox then an image that shows Asirpa in the distance, watching the sleeping fox as Kiro watches her. Visually it’s not great as it seems to imply Asirpa is the sleeping fox when this is not the case but it’s better than many other abrupt transitions. The idea of having Ogata talk to Kiro from behind him is… weird to say the least. It’s unnatural and suspicious. Was it too hard to have him make three more steps so as to have the manga scene? Besides at a certain point Ogata is finally at Kiro’s side even though it didn’t look like he moved… but then Kiro stepped away, leaving him behind again, which is again weird. In the anime Ogata sounds more threatening and dangerous than he seems in the manga while Kiro seems almost uncertain, as if afraid of Ogata.
ABASHIRI HOSPITAL
Manga & Anime: At the Abashiri Hospital Tsurumi is visiting Nikaidou. Usami reports that once Nikaidou learnt about Sugimoto’s death he turned into an empty shell, buried himself under the cover and won’t come out. Tsurumi tempts him with morphine, offering it to him if Nikaidou were to eat. Although Nikaidou seems to react once Tsurumi mentions chopsticks Nikaidou, whose hand was blown off, buried himself back under the cover. Tsurumi tries again offering Nikaidou a fork. It seems he could work when Arisaka interrupts them. Arisaka though has been carrying a present for Nikaidou, a new hand. Arisaka explains it’s no mere hand which really catches Nikaidou’s interest only for Arisaka to reveal the hand is different because it can put chopsticks where the middle finger is. This causes Nikaidou to bury himself under covers again.
There are just some minor differences:
- In the manga we see Tsurumi tells Nikaidou to get the chopsticks then Usami warning him Nikaidou lost his hand, Nikaidou noticing something as he watched them before burying himself under the cover. In the anime we see Nikaidou attempting to reach for the food with the arm which lost its hand before Usami reminds Tsurumi Nikaidou lost his hand. At this Nikaidou turns to them then buries himself under the cover. The sounds Nikaidou makes as he moves are weird, as if he fully were a machine.
Tumblr media
- In the manga Tsurumi tells Usami to bring him a fork. The scene is skipped in the anime.
My two cents: Nikaidou’s attempt to reach the food is quite pathetical. Basically he’s just stretching his amputated limb in the food direction, trembling, not really making an attempt to get the food. It’s however more clear that, once he realized others were watching him he hid himself and also for Nikaidous other moviments.
CHAP 148 ENDS HERE
GANSOKU LEAVES
Manga & Anime: Back to Karafuto Gansoku is leaving the group. Tsukishima tells him something in Russian. As Gansoku asks for explanations it turns out Tsukishima told him he would kill him if Gansoku were to return in Japan and that he should study Russian. Gansoku is positively impressed and walks away. Koito asks if letting him go is okay and Tsukishima reminds him it’s Tsukishima who’s in charge and adds he’s in charge of what to do with Sugimoto so, should he lose it again, Tsukishima would kill him because, if Sugi is unable to control himself, he’ll get to a point of no return.
There are just some minor differences:
- In the manga, Gansoku smiles at Tsukishima’s words, in the anime he grins.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
- In the manga there’s a panel showing the skin count for Tsurumi. In the anime there’s nothing of the sort.
Tumblr media
- At the end of the scene the anime added Igogusa’s hair being tossed on the water.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
My two cents: Personally I liked how the anime only showed Tsukishima’s mouth when he said Sugimoto would do something he’ll regret, then Igogusa’s hair being tossed away, then Tsukishima’s eyes. It’s a nice foreshadowing, that adds a note of sadness to the scene.
BEFORE THE FIGHT
Manga & Anime: 1896, army prison. Tsukishima, who is being hold in a jail, is talking with Tsurumi of a girl he knew, nicknamed ‘Igogusa’ due to her wild, unruly hair. Tsukishima loved that girl who was the only one who would call him by his real name, Hajime, while the rest of the island would insult him because his father was rumoured to be a murderer. Tsukishima explains he planned to marry her once he were to return from the Sino-Japanese war. However, when the war ended, Igogusa’s letters stopped coming and when Tsukishima returned in his hometown he discovered they all believed he had died during the war and Igogusa had gone missing 10 days before he returned and her shoes were found on the shore. Tsukishima searched for her until he discovered it was his father who told around he died during the war so he murdered the man without knowing why he told people such things. Tsukishima concludes saying now he’s waiting for his own execution for parricide but he has no regrets for killing the man who caused Igogusa’s death.
There are just some minor differences:
- In the manga, the first thing we see is the prison, in the anime we get a glimpse of a jailed Tsukishima’s eyes which superimposed on the Tsukishima of the previous scene who was walking away.
. In the manga we can’t really see Tsukishima’s chest, while in the anime is shown, making Tsukishima look much thinner than usual as one seems to be able to see his bones.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
- In the manga Tsukishima seems to be looking straight to Tsurumi, in the anime he seems to be looking down.
- In the manga Tsurumi looks comfortable and yet somehow sinister, in the anime he seems hunched over and friendly. Also the anime gives him sunken cheeks he didn’t have yet in the manga.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
- In the manga Igogusa’s hair is very wild and curly while in the anime it only seems wavy and not similar at all to igogusa… and this is not because it’s of a different colour (Director Nanba tweeted how he wanted to make Igogusa's hair reddish, same as the real egogusa), it just doesn’t have the same shape.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
- When Tsukishima fights the islanders the blood on his face seems to be his own, while in the anime is of the people he’s fighting. In the anime he also seems older than he seems in the manga.
Tumblr media
- The manga doesn’t show where Igogusa’s shoes were found while the anime shows one of them was in the water.
Tumblr media
- In the manga Tsukishima seems empty and apathetic as he kills his father, in the anime he seems more angry.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
- In the manga, after Tsukishima kills his father, we see Igogusa. In the anime we see her as well but then she disappear.
My two cents: For once the transition from the previous scene to this one is not abrupt and well done, the image of Tsukishima walking away superimposing to Tsukishima in jail.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In the anime Tsukishima seems beyond creepy as he fights off the islanders. Kind of like a monster.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Although Igogusa’s ears are red in both the manga and the anime as she’s blushing, in the anime they’re barely noticeable, while in the manga it’s clear they’re red because she’s flushing.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Again the anime favour still images for the scene in which Tsukishima learn he was supposed to be dead that don’t quite work well. The red sky when Tsukishima runs back home is a nice idea, as it gives clearly the impression Tsukishima is bloody furious.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Maybe it’s just me but the scene of Tsukishima punching his father seems too slow. I would expect him to punch him faster. The idea of showing Igogusa and then making her disappear is nice.
THE ANIME PLACES HERE AN EYECATCH
TSURUMI’S INVESTIGATION
Manga & Anime: Tsurumi wanders for Tsukishima’s homecity, sees the shore, sniffs igoneri.
There are just some minor differences:
- In the manga, the shadow falling on Tsurumi’s face makes him suspicious. No such thing there’s in the anime where the most the shadow cover are his eyes and it’s clearly the shadow of his cap.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
My two cents: There’s nothing much to say about this bit in the anime, it really adds nothing, it just makes Tsurumi slightly less suspicious than in the manga but, for the rest, it’s the same.
TSURUMI’S SECOND VISIT
Manga & Anime: Tsurumi visit Tsukishima again to tell him “Egogusa-chan” didn’t kill herself. He explains a manager from Mitsubishi bought Sado’s mine and then his son got a crush on “Egogusa-chan” but as she turned him down her father decided to persuade her to accept by paying Tsukishima’s father to tell around Tsukishima died then faked their daughter’s suicide and went with her to Tokyo. He also told him “Egogusa-chan” gave him some of her hair which Tsukishima loved to bury then with Tsukishima’s bones. Tsurumi then points out how since Tsukishima is fluent in Russian and soon Japan will be at war with Russia an interpreter could be of use, especially since Tsurumi is heading to Russia as an intelligence officer. Tsukishima corrects Tsurumi saying he can’t speak Russian and he’s on the death row to which Tsurumi replies Tsukishima should study Russian like his life depends on it.
There are minor cuts and changes:
- In the manga we’re shown Tsurumi is already seated while the anime shows us Tsurumi getting inside first.
- In the manga when they talk of Tsukishima’s father’s involvement they only show Tsukishima’s house. In the anime they also shows the man’s hands caressing lovingly a package supposedly containing money.
Tumblr media
- The anime adds a scene showing Igogusa on the cliff and then moving away from it as Tsurumi says she went on Tokyo.
- In the manga Tsurumi seems to be smiling when he tells Tsukishima the story while in the anime he’s serious.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
My two cents: Well, this is not that bad, apart for the fact Tsurumi keeps on having sunken cheeks and the art is not so great and… well, I get a different feeling from the manga in regard to Tsurumi. Anime Tsurumi seems more trustworthy than manga Tsurumi and Tsukishima’s confused expression at Tsurumi’s insistence he could talk Russian was somehow funnier in the manga. But overall it’s not too bad script wise. Well, I wish they had not used a still image for when the Mitsubishi’s guy proposed and Igogusa was with her mother but whatever, the anime seems really hook up on still images. On a different note the manga took care never show Tsukishima’s father’ not even a bit while the anime showed a bit of him. It might mean nothing but I always wondered if it was relevant we didn’t see the guy and now I also wonder if the anime messed up by showing him… well part of him to us.
ARMY CAMP HOSPITAL IN MUKDEN
Manga and anime: We’re at Mukden, during the Russo-Japanese war, Tsukishima, injured at a showled, is lying down in what looks like a hospital camp. A soldier from Sado approaches him, asking him if he’s Tsukishima Hajime and why he’s here as he was supposed to be on death row and how the girl he was searching was found just after Tsukishima was caught… or better what they found was her body.
There are minor cuts and changes:
- The anime added images of Sado among which the shore, Igogusa’s shoe and the Igogusa when the unnamed soldier says they found her.
My two cents: Another transition done right! I’m impressed, the guys are learning! Thanks also to a loud sound effect inserted when Tsurumi was talking in the previous scene, although it’s clear that, when the cannon is shown we’re seeing a different scene, the cannon exploding well ties with what we were showed previously. I’m not saying the guy Tsukishima talk with is good looking in the manga because he’s definitely not but there’s something creepy in him in the anime. There’s also a huge problem with the guy as they coloured the borders of his uniform in red, meaning he’s in the infantry. However the manga will later show the number on his shoulder board, “2”. That 2 though, would mean he's in the 2nd infantry regiment, which was under the 1st Division and not the second from which Tsukishima will say that soldier was supposed to come. For that “2” to mean he belongs to the 2nd infantry regiment his collar piping should be yellow and his shoulder strap either yellow, making him belong to the artillery or brown, making him belong in the engineering. What’s more the anime actually shows his shoulder board which the manga was careful to keep hidde, but in the anime there’s no number on it.
Tumblr media
On another side the addition if those images of Sado isn’t bad.
TSUKISHIMA LOSES IT
Manga and Anime: Tsukishima, furious, runs to Tsurumi, demanding how dare he to lie to Tsukishima,
My two cents: The scene is mostly the same, although Tsukishima seems to be running too slowly.
CHAPTER 149 ENDS HERE.
TSUKISHIMA AND TSURUMI’S CONFRONTATION
Manga and anime: Tsukishima proceeds punching Tsurumi, Maeyama tries stopping him and get punched away as Tsukishima asks Tsurumi why he found Igogusa’s bones under his father’s house, if his father killed her, if the hair he gave him were also dug up, if Tsurumi lied to him for 9 years. Tsurumi says he did so because Tsukishima was fine with being executed then asks everyone to leave. He then says once Tsukishima were to know “Egogusa-chan” was alive he would want to live again. Angrily Tsukishima asks him if he expects him to be grateful. Tsurumi claims Tsukishima’s father’s life wasn’t worth Tsukishima’s life in his book and he wanted to save Tsukishima by any means as Tsukishima is an awesome soldier, a man he trusts and a precious friend. Tsukishima is touched and breaks down, claiming he never wanted Tsurumi to use Igogusa to deceive him. Tsurumi says there’s nore he has to tell him but the attack is resumed and Tsukishima pushes him down, covering him with his body. A shell though explodes near them, wounding them both.
There are minor cuts and changes:
- In the manga Maeyama is sweating and seems comparatively more worried than in the anime, where he’s not sweating. Also in the manga when he’s pushed away by Tsukishima he get a bloody nose, while this is not the case in the anime where it seems Tsukishima pushed him away not that hard.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
- In the manga Ogata seemed to slightly smile as Tsukishima blew up while Tanigaki was sweating. In the anime Ogata is serious and Tanigaki isn’t sweating. Also positions are changed so that in the anime Noma, who was in the group of the bystanders, is now near Tsukishima and Mishima, who was behind Ogata, is now behind Tamai and Maeyama.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
- In the manga when Tsurumi says Tsukishima’s father life wasn’t worth Tsukishima’s and how he wanted to save Tsukishima at any cost, we can see a close up of Tsurumi’s face. In the anime the scene is shown from above.
- In the manga it seems Tsukishima tossed Tsurumi on the ground as soon as the attack started. In the anime Tsukishima and Tsurumi tried to run for the trench but then Tsukishima pushed Tsurumi on the ground from behind. Tsurumi also seems less surprised by Tsukishima’s actions than he is in the manga.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
My two cents: Many scenes are exactly as they were in the manga and this is good. My only complaint is that when Tsurumi praises Tsukishima, due to the shadows placement his face seems too long and the same also applies to the strands of hair falling on his face. On a personal note I would have preferred they hadn’t shown the scene of the explosion in slow motion. For me it felt just too slow. Also I never quite liked how the anime deal with blood.
THE RUN TO THE HOSPITAL
Manga and anime: Tsukishima remember saying Igogusa he loves her because she calls him Hajime and that he loves her hair too and would beat up anyone who were to make fun of them. Igogusa replies that’s why they all hate Tsukishima. Tsukishima is on the ground, hearing voices around him. He then remembers Tsurumi telling him in order to protect the bones of their fallen comrades they have to keep moving forward. In present time he’s on a stretcher, Tsurumi calling him and asking him if he’s still alive to which Tsukishima replies he doesn’t know. They’re carried to the frozen river, down which there should be a hospital. However there are only two sledges and on one there’s already a soldier (Toraji), while another soldier (Sugimoto) is near him. Tamai decides they would have to put Tsurumi on the sledge. Sugimoto pulls Toraji off the sledge and covers his eyes saying they could use that one too because Toraji said to give priority to those who can be saved. Tsurumi and Tsukishima are carried away on the sledges as Sugimoto and Toraji remain behind.
There are minor cuts and changes:
- In the manga they don’t comment on how many sledge have remained, in the anime Tamai observes it’s just one.
- In the manga both Toraji and Sugimoto’s face looked unclean, in the anime they’re perfectly clean.
- In the manga Tsukishima doesn’t look well while in the anime, if you discount the blood, he seems mostly fine.
- In the manga, when the sledges move away from him, we can see Sugimoto has his arms around Toraji, neck, Toraji’s head slightly raised due to this. In the anime Sugimoto seems hunch over, Toraji lying completely on the ground, Sugimoto’s arms not supporting him.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
My two cents: The scene is again the same as in the manga which is good, they even showed Toraji’s breath… though they should have showed everyone’s breath for this to make sense but whatever, I praise their effort. Somehow Tsukishima’s voice feels off in the flashback. He was supposed to be much younger and instead he sounds older and unnatural.
AT THE HOSPITAL
Manga & Anime: Tsurumi explains to Tsukishima he actually faked up digging “Egogusa-chan’s” remains from under his home so that Tsukishima would be released without a trial. Tsurumi insists it was all a fiction and it was a coincidence he met a man from Sado in Mukden. Tsukishima asks about Igogusa and Tsurumi claims since he didn’t issue a death certificate she won’t have troubles as she went to Tokyo to get married. Tsukishima just flatly accepts it. Tsurumi then goes on telling him as soon as the war ends they’ll put in action the Ainu plan, for which he needs men with resolve willing to do everything, even go to hell and Tsukishima is the only one Tsurumi can trust. Tsukishima promises he’ll help him as he saved his life and that he also wants to do it in service of those who died. Behind Tsukishima walks the man form Sado who told Tsukishima what had happened. He exchanges a look with Tsurumi and Tsurumi smiles at him.
There are minor cuts and changes:
- In the anime they added an image of Igogusa calling Tsukishima.
- In the manga When we’re shown the convicts we can see Sakamoto and O-gin. And also Ushiyama. In the anime, they’re missing. To make up for it they’ve added Prisoner number 1.
- In the manga the guy who talked to Tsukishima smiles as he pecks at the scene. In the anime he’s serious.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
- In the manga, although Tsukishima looks at Tsurumi’s hand on his shoulder, he doesn’t seem to think anything is wrong with it. In the anime he frowns at it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
- In the manga as the guy who talked with Tsukishima leaves, Tsurumi smiles, his mouth slightly open. In the anime his mouth is a lot more opened.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
My two cents: The scene is again very faithful to the manga. If anything it only seems that Tsukishima is more at odd in the anime with being touched by Tsurumi than in the manga. The anime also makes clear Tsurumi pats Tsukishima’s head, which wasn’t so clear in the manga as we could assume the dark thing under Tsurumi’s hand was Tsukishima’s shoulder.
Tumblr media
Overall, I still think the manga was more expressive but I can’t do nothing but praise the anime’s efforts in trying to keep as close as possible to the manga.
BACK TO OTARU
Manga & Anime: Tsukishima tosses Igogusa’s hair in the water then joins Tsurumi and the others as Tsurumi removes the bandages and wear for the first time his enamel protector.
My two cents: Again the anime follows the manga faithfully. I rather enjoyed how the ending started while the scene was still going on, giving it a better atmosphere.
TO SUM IT ALL
My general impression is this episode is more similar to an OAD containing one of the many GK arcs than to an anime episode, with two small extra episode at the start instead than at the end, the idea reinforced by how they didn’t show the opening and the ending doesn’t have the usual images but just the ending titles, as if we’ve just seen a movie, not an episode. They sure wanted to give quite a bit of relevance to Tsukishima’s story and they did it well enough, especially in regard to the transposition of chap 150. If I’ve to make some complains I would say the episode would have worked better without the inclusion of chap 148 as the Karafuto bit and the Hokkaido hospital bit really felt unconnected from Tsukishima’s story and their quality is lower. Also the anime’s art just isn’t on par with the one of the manga in terms of expressivity and details, and in some points the quality is really not great. Still, this episode had some good moments so I hope they’ll show us even more improvement.

A Season in Retrospect
So, turns out Kawhi’s knee injury was significantly worse than we thought. I mean, it’s not career ending (at least that we know of), but the reality is that he never was coming back to the 2021 Playoff Picture. Do I think the Clippers handled this information well? Maybe. Do I think the Clippers should do everything in their power to keep Kawhi around long-term? Probably. But do I think betting everything on Kawhi coming back to his prior form justifies selling the farm? Absolutely not.
Here’s the thing: as a Clippers fan I am absolutely happy to see Kawhi having chosen the Clippers as his team of the future two years ago. I was excited to see Paul George traded to LA and not end up in the purple & gold, a year removed from spurning the Lakers in free agency, even if it broke my heart to see SGA heading back to OKC in return. I was happy to watch them piece together a team that could legitimately combat LeBron and his then-new running mate Anthony Davis. But the season came, the Clippers looked great (especially against LA - trust me, I was there opening night in a sea of crying Laker fans) and it took a pandemic to derail everything.
Now, I am not a Bubble-whiner, but was it ideal to have the Bubble be the lasting impression of what it prototypically means to traverse the grueling 82 game season and battle the best of the best? No. The Bubble had it faults, but the Clippers had every shot to win it all just like anyone else that was there. Their collapse is historic and another black mark on the Clipper name, but for me that was greatly the fault of Doc Rivers and his relentless approach at sticking to his guns and NEVER making the unconventional adjustment. He’s absolutely known for it, and the Bubble proved it. Would this have been any different if there had not been the bubble? Maybe not, but the many factors of what happened between stopped play and restarting in the Bubble had more effect than is given credit for (i.e. Montreal Harrell and the loss of his best friend, his grandmother).
This last season showed that the Clippers can be scary when everything is clicking. Yes, other teams suffered injuries throughout the season but the Clippers always appeared to be playing at a 7 with intent to turn it up to 11 when the playoffs came. But their secret weapon was the adjustments Ty Lue was willing to make. If you rewatch each series, you will see the EXACT same formula in each one. Games 1 & 2 were close losses, and by Game 3 the adjustments would kick in. Each series had a young Superstar taking the reigns and showing they were unstoppable. Stephen A. Smith talked about it after every game and even went so far to declare Donovan Mitchell the “greatest Jazz player of all time” based on his performance against the Clippers. Then, the Clippers would put that fire out and the rest of the team would have to pick up the slack. And despite the positive depth of each team (and the universal agreement that the Clippers lacked depth), the Clippers rose to the occasion time and time again.
And when Kawhi went down, we didn’t blink. The momentum of confidence from the coaching staff gave guys like Terrance Mann & Luke Kennard the added support to produce some amazing performances. I firmly believe the Clippers could have won it all had Game 1 of the WCF had a couple calls go our way and PG hit a single Free Throw at the end of Game 2. Then some adequate rest between the WCF and the Finals might have recharged enough for a true run of the Bucks. BUT this isn’t a woulda-shoulda-coulda. Like the team, even I was exhausted by Game 6 following a marathon of games every other day for a solid 3 weeks.
So it’s on to the next season. A chance to let the excitement and accomplishments from this past season settle in and optimism of the future. Except we are now regularly inundated with news about Kawhi and his future with the team and what the extent of his injury might mean. And while it is probably the most unpopular opinion on the internet, I’ll be the first to say it: if Kawhi doesn’t want to be here, then he needs to go.
If Kawhi wants to be in Dallas or Miami, then let him. If his only avenue there is through a sign and trade, then get some quality in return for his loss and move on. Make more adjustments, get into the right groove, and move on.
I’ve watched nearly every game of the last two seasons and Kawhi on the floor is universally the best player. But there are moments - regularly - where I am not confident that he inspires his teammates. He is known to be low-key on his attitude and that can be jarring. I want passion, emotion, excitement. I personally thrive off the energy of others and maybe that’s where seeing Kawhi on TV or from a distance at the Staples Center doesn’t always translate. But PG’s energy does. Even when he’s saying some dumb stuff (Playoff P...) he still seems to have the support of his teammates. Without PG we wouldn’t have kept Reggie Jackson at next-to-nothing. PG might be the reason Reggie sticks around on a reasonable contract over the loads of money another team might throw at him.
Kawhi brought us Ibaka, sure, and barring the injury might have been a really great impact on the playoffs. But it’s the role players that carried us through the playoffs when Kawhi went down. And if Kawhi still had a big hand in keeping them motivated, then let’s not lose him. Let’s hope that matters enough for Kawhi to not only want to stick around but keep this team together.
The idea of trading away the bench in order to bring in another question-mark player is nauseating to me. If we have to lose guys like Patrick Beverly, Marcus Morris, or Terrance Mann, I don’t want to see the return be mid-level guys who need to jive in a new situation. If the return is anyone but Damian Lillard, I don’t want them. No John Wall. No Russell Westbrook. No Ben Simmons. No middle-of-the-road players that don’t truly elevate over what we have. Marcus Morris was once seen as one of these guys, and at his best still is. Why trade him unless you are absolutely certain the guy coming back is better? Pat Bev is the heart of our team, and proved that in crunch time he is still easily the most effective defensive stopper in the league. Don’t believe me, listen to comments from the Jazz series on guys not wanting to get stuck with him on them.
Yes, their contracts are high. And yes, nothing can be done without moving on from these guys. But why does anything need to be done? If there’s one for certain that needs to be addressed, it’s Kawhi. If he is not the leader of this team, which I would argue Paul George has more of the proven leader qualities than Kawhi has outwardly shown, and he might want to play somewhere else, then use his albatross contract and the unknown of his injury and how it affects his future as the last-ditch-effort trade chip to bring some talent back and give us the flexibility.
Would I be opposed to Kawhi-to-Dallas? Mostly, as I don’t like enough of the surrounding talent to come back as collateral. Short of getting every draft pick imaginable from Dallas, guys like Tim Hardaway, Jr. or Kristaps Porzingis don’t give me the confidence that I would want to be traceable assets or reliable otherwise. Hardaway had a great resurgence, sure, but he needs to find a way to Indiana to keep playing for Rick Carlisle. Porzingis on the other hand is still a good player, but has proven he’s not worth the contract and thus untraceable to a third team so you’re stuck with him. And he does not signlehandedly replace what Kawhi brings. I like guys like Maxi Kleber, but then we have so many bigs we wouldn’t know what to do with, and trading away Zubac’s to accommodate incoming bigs would be a huge mistake. I also would hate the combination of Luka & Kawhi from a competitor standpoint. If we ran into Dallas a third time in the playoffs next season, but they now have Kawhi instead, we are toast. Bottom line.
I’d send Kawhi to Miami. Mostly because he would only be our problem if they made it to the finals, and as a basketball fan I’d love to see that Miami team go head to head with the Nets for a couple seasons and see what shakes out. If Kawhi joined Jimmy Butler in Miami, the East would, in my opinion, have effectively balanced itself back out with the West. I also think the return would be better. Guys like Tyler Herro, Duncan Robinson, Kendrick Nunn all have trade value. Get some picks in return as well and we have some quality building blocks. Or truly pull off the incredible by making this trade as a stepping stone to another one that nets the Clippers Damian Lillard.
I’ve tinkered with the NBA Trade Machine and made this work a variety of ways. Sending Ibaka to the Blazers and Kawhi to the Heat allows the Clippers to bring back not just Lillard, but potentially one of Miami’s sharpshooters or even a talent like Jones Jr. or Kanter. Sporting a lineup that includes George and Lillard without giving up guys like Morris, Zubac, Mann, or Beverly would be a huge win. Keeping Rondo for experience and leadership would be welcome though he likely wouldn’t play much, and spending the remaining resources on retaining guys like Nic Batum & Reggie Jackson would be crucial.
All in all, I would hate to see Kawhi leave a team that could have won it if the injury never happened. I would hate to see this team broken up at all. Bring back Batum, bring back Jackson. Bring back guys like Cousins or even Pat Pat (despite his effective 0 minutes played in the playoffs). Leadership and chemistry is the final piece in this already established puzzle.
But if Kawhi needs to follow his own path, then I think the Clippers need to suck it up and move on.

The Weekend Update: Carolina Prep and More at Pine Top, Three Lakes, Full Gallop Farm
Tumblr media
Another weekend of eventing is in the books, with plenty of horse and rider pairs out and about in the southern states. We’re inching closer to warmer weather for the spring season, as well as some upcoming competitions, like the Carolina International CCI4* in just a few weeks!
We caught up with some of the riders aiming for Carolina, and took a look back on this weekend and celebrate our Weekend Winners! Congrats to all on successful outings, with an extra shout out to the winner of our Unofficial Low Score Award, Priscilla Pignatelli and Dittos Gold En Fury, who scored 20.7 in the Starter Rider division at Three Lakes!
Full Gallop Farm Mid February H.T. (Aiken, SC) [Website][Scoring]
Preliminary/Training: Alexandra Knowles and Fernhill Mac an Bata (29.8) Training: Tracey Bienemann and Silver Bop (29.6) Training/Novice: Margaret Schneck and Islandwood Border Patrol (31.7) Novice: Cole William Horn and WillOMoor Pathfinder (24.7) Beginner Novice A: Christine Hryzak and Sheeran (27.7) Beginner Novice B: Fylicia Barr and Master Of Illusion (23.8) Starter: Sophia Perry and Corona With Lime (29.7) Pre-Starter: Katherine Thornton and Carlingford Finegan (28.0)
Pine Top Advanced (Thomson, GA) [Website][Scoring]
“I’m very pleased with how my horses went at Pine Top this weekend,” says Advanced B winner Ariel Grald, who reflected, “I’m based in Ocala for the winters, and although we have several great venues to choose from, I always make the trip to the Pine Top Advanced HT with my upper level horses… The cross country courses are fantastic and are a good evaluation of where the horses are at at the beginning of the season.”
We’ll see Ariel at Carolina in just a few weeks, with Anne Eldridge’s Leamore Master Plan (Master Imp xx – Ardragh Bash, by Cavalier Royale) in the 4*S, Annie Eldridge’s Diara in the 3*S (Diacontinus – Lady Revens, by Colon xx), and Annie Eldridge’s Adagio’s Nobility (Adagio De Talma – Noble Lady I, by Heraldik xx) in the 2*S.
Andrew McConnon won the Advanced A with Jeanne Shigo’s Ferrie’s Cello (Chello III – Karelza, by Wolfgang). “I’m thankful to have my horses starting off the season looking and feeling well! I had different goals for each horse and I’m pleased with all four of them. We’re really fortunate to have Pine Top Farm on our spring calendar, I’ve been going to Pine Top for nearly 20 years. I’ve had many firsts at Pine Top, including my first Advanced many years ago. It’s always been a special event to me!”
Coming out of the winter, these early spring events have been helpful in bringing Andrew’s horses back from their breaks and in utilizing their training. “I’ve been fortunate to learn from William Fox-Pitt in England the importance of a long winter break and several weeks of long hacking before starting back into work. Most recently with the help of the USEF I’ve had the opportunity to train with Leslie Law, well as my long time coaches at home who have helped me step up my game. While I’m not on the development list this year, the opportunities over the last several years from Nations Cup teams, European tour, and access to training in that program has made a huge impact to myself and my program.”
With a recent move out onto his own, Chris Talley sought out Pine Top as an important stop in his spring for his horses and program: “This year after stepping out on my own and starting my own business I came up from Ocala, Florida and came to the second Pine Top specifically because they have the Advanced division which I wanted to target with the Allison Pratt’s FE Marco Polo (Arko Junior Pms – Elfe II, by Exorbitant XX) and my own Loughtown Cici (Cc Captain Cruise – Castlelawn Diamond Clover, by White Clover) that recently stepped up to [the level].”
“The cross country at Pine Top is why I chose to come here every year. It’s big and bold and really requires positive riding. The courses offer fair questions for this point in the season and also offers a bit of terrain which in Florida you don’t get much of.”
“It’s been a very good start to the season and all the horses finished Pine Top full of confidence so I’m excited for some big spring plans… Since establishing my own business I’ve been really happy with how the horses are going. I have an amazing group of horses and wonderful owners who have been incredibly supportive. This year I really wanted to find the fun in it again. I wanted to enjoy my personal life as much as I enjoy the horses and I’ve found the perfect work/life balance which I think the horses and their performance and reaping the rewards of,” Chris commented.
Having just moved her business back to the states from her time in England, Kimmy Cecere enjoyed her first time at Pine Top. “What a fantastic event to start the season! Both the cross country and show jumping courses were strong and rewarding.”
“Jacqueline Mars’ Landmark’s Monaco (Formula One – Glamour) had a fun and easy canter around the Intermediate. [Her own] OS Hermintage (Indoctro – Elvira), who has just stepped up to the level, gained confidence throughout all three phases. The rolling hills and variety of questions set both horses up to continue on to Carolina in a few weeks,” Kimmy reflected.
Kimmy’s horses seem to be making the transition to their new base in Southern Pines well. “The horses traveled super well and they love our new base in Southern Pines,” Kimmy commented. “I have developed some great new relationships, and I’m looking forward to expanding my business!”

hi! what are some of your favorite christmas things?
hello!!!!
ooooo christmas, i love christmas so apologies if this becomes a long mess -
- call me cliché but i love presents, giving other people something they really want and playing a little part in their day of happiness? amazing
also (insight into my crazy family here lmao, apologies) but we (and i don't know why or how this started but it's just a thing) all write our names and a colour on a piece of paper and randomly pick one each, and then fill a stocking up with 15-20 random little cheap bits we find in shops in that colour and wrap them in ridiculous ways and we can honestly end up with anything from really shitty cheap little plastic cocktail sticks to 11 individually wrapped pens (which yes i did to my dad. twice.) and everything in between and it is genuinely a very good laugh
- i'm going to start this off by reinstating that my family is crazy. like really. so, again unsure why or how this started, but on christmas eve we all get together and make mince pies. roughly 90. and no i'm not kidding. there's usually 11 of us on christmas day, two can't even eat mince pies and yet we still spend an entire evening drinking and singing along to christmas songs and making so many mince pies we run out of room to cool them. we do end up giving a lot of them out to family friends and in hampers for others but we do go through a lot ourselves. who doesn't love a homemade mince pie right?😂
- going to the christmas tree farm and walking in and amongst a forest of trees and pine cones and feeling so incredibly at peace. and then finding the perfect tree and chopping it down and bringing it home is just, i love it
- decorations. i LOVE decorating for christmas. putting the tree up and decorating that is so fun, bringing out all (and when i say all, i mean all) the little characters we have sitting around in and outside the house (which, yes, i have named them all) and lights!!! god i love christmas lights, everyone's houses just look SO pretty. we're really the only house in my little street that do more than one set of lights (and we really do do more than one, turning them all on/off is a task™) and tbh we're like a bright little beacon of light on the corner and i think it's joyful
- bringing out and decorating the castles my grandad made quite a few years ago. he was a crafty man (like my whole family tbh) and made each household a christmas castle out of old toilet rolls and cereal boxes/tablet boxes and matchsticks and sprayed them gold. he made my sister and i one each about a year or 2 before he died, with our names in old english stuck on the front, and they are the one decoration we all cherish deeply in our hearts and light up with pride.
- giving my dog presents. yeah. and yeah i do buy him more than i buy anyone else. i love him and he's my world and i know he doesn't know that they're for a special occasion but i still spoil him nonetheless.
- my family all descend on my nan's house on christmas morning and we don't leave until the new year has rung in, even though we only live 5 minutes from each other and i love it??? it's the one time of the year my family just forget all their toxic opinions and we just get on and have a good time.
- my nan started a tradition in my town many many years ago where the high street shuts down and all the shops stay open late and there's the local brass band playing carols, staff from banks and pubs and restaurants all stand outside their respective buildings serving mulled wine and homemade mince pies. Charity's and local guide/scout groups sell homemade crafts and bakes for charity/to fund an excursion. Local crafts people sell things they've made on little stalls, santa sits on his sleigh with his reindeer, choirs (one which i'm part of) sing christmas songs in the street, halls and community spaces open up for more stalls and it is a wonderfully joyful start to christmas. It was started as an ode to the victorian times and people would often dress up in dickensian outfits, not as many people do these days but the whole town comes out for the lighting of the lights and our town's beginning of christmas.
- performing in christmas concerts. The choir that i'm part of usually does a christmas concert each year (supposed to do one in an old cathedral a few towns over this year but ya know, 2020 happened) and they're always a load of fun too, because we do not take ourselves too seriously.
- attending the local brass band's christmas carol sing along. My grandad wrote a few pieces of music for them and my nan is vice president for them and very much a friend and my family has been going for as long as i can remember. They play carols, we dress up incredibly festively and sing along. There's mince pies and a raffle and a lot of very silly fun.
- boxing day because we all just wake up at some point nearing afternoon (after going to sleep at around 3/4am the night before probably) and eat left over food from the day before, meaning we have mince pies for breakfast and turkey sandwiches for lunch and endless christmas pudding for dinner and we spend the entire day playing board games and just genuinely having a laugh.
- talking of christmas pudding, we make them too. We all get together at my nans in around october every couple of years and make enough christmas pudding mix for roughly 8 puddings, using the same recipe my nan's nan used when she was young. We don't eat all 8 in one day though lmao, we tend to get through 2 between those of us that can eat it on christmas day and boxing day. We then have another on new years eve and another at easter (i yet again do not know why but i am also not complaining). The other 4 get doused in brandy every few months and come out the following christmas and tbh by the time we eat them, we don't need to pour brandy over them to light them on fire, they are flammable enough themselves😂 and thankfully we made enough last year that we didn't have to this year because, ya know, 2020.
- christmas morning. I know it sounds cliché and all but no matter how old i am and how far i've strayed from childhood, i wake up with giddy excitement for the few days of genuine joy i know i'm going to experience. I wear a ridiculously christmassy outift that is just pattern after pattern after pattern and a santa hat and ridiculous earings and wake up to the smell of the turkey cooking in the oven that my mum got up at stupid hours of the morning to prepare. And then we all go up to my nans and shout merry christmas at each other and all easily fall into roles of putting presents under the tree and finding enough mismatched chairs for everyone to sit at, trapesing through the garage to get the extra table, covering them all in many christmassy table cloths, setting the table, preparing the food, folding the christmas napkins into christmas trees (yes i do do that, it makes us laugh), giving everyone a cracker and putting the santa salt and pepper shakers on the table, roles that we wordlessly assigned ourselves years before we realised we had.
I just, i love christmas. And i apologise for just throwing a load of words at you but here is a very very crazy insight into what it is about christmas that i thoroughly enjoy and thank you for taking time to even ask <33

TREE CHAIN
1. what it takes to talk (a courthouse steps remix) by navaan (616, T, 3494 words)
Canon divergence sort of fix it for CW/Death of Captain America with hints of all the bad that went on around the two of them at the time.
2. For Now (A Remix Before the War) by sophinisba (MCU, G, 3299 words)
Tony isn't sure it's a good idea for the idea for the Avengers to return to Sokovia, but he's off the team now. It's not his decision to make.
3. upsetti spaghetti by starksnack (MCU, E, 3000 words)
“Is that a Foccacia loaf in your pocket, or are you just happy to see me?” Basically Steve tries to cook an Italian birthday dinner for Tony.
4. for the love of (spaghetti remix) by Lets_call_me_Lily (3490, T, 1281 words)
Natasha Stark: Iron Woman, genius, inventor, philanthropist, billionaire, married. And, though not commonly known, an accomplished cook.
5. Dinner Plans (Food is Love Remix) by Neverever (Avengers Assemble, T, 1335 words)
Steve has had a long hard day. It doesn't get better.
6. He Lit a Fire (and Now He's in My Every Thought) by EachPeachPearPlum (MCU, T, 1578 words)
It probably says a lot about his friendship with Natasha that the first words out of her mouth are, “What did you do this time?” "Nothing!” Clint argues. Tasha arches an eyebrow at him, sceptical in the extreme, which Clint is so not having. “Swear to god, I was playing that Lego game they made about us, no way I could have caused a fire.” “Uhuh,” Tasha ‘agrees’, then goes for their usual means of resolving arguments that take place in the tower. “JARVIS?” “On this occasion, Agent Barton is quite correct, Agent Romanov,” their resident ceiling-deity answers. “The fire began in Sir and Captain Rogers’ kitchen.”
7. A sweet Moment (Remix) by Caw_caw_MotherF (MCU, G, art)
Tumblr media
8. Stolen Moments by navaan (Noir, G, 860 words)
Tony seems a little off when the group is on the way back to camp. Like his mind is somewhere else — or on someone else.
FRUIT CHAIN
1. Ocean Cold by MiniRaven (616, G, 2384 words)
Tony Stark; billionaire, hero, merman, goes on a swim after a long day at sea. He finds something in the ice and, upon closer inspection, discovers not all is as it appears.
2. Fractured Moonlight on the Sea by EachPeachPearPlum (MCU, G, 1623 words)
As the mysterious object grows nearer, it becomes clearer but no more explicable. There’s flashes of red and gold, both washed out by the blueness of the light, moving with the light but not always in the same position in relation to it, and- It’s a man. The thing travelling in Steve’s direction from below the water is a man. Those are hands, cutting through the water, and a face, a bare torso, the light not attached to the man’s clothing (as Steve first assumed) but actually in his chest. It’s sort of a man, anyway, if Steve doesn’t look any lower than waist height. Below that, the flashes of red and gold are slowly resolving themselves into scales. Scales. The thing heading towards him is a mermaid. Man. Person?
3. The Rescue of Captain America (The Bedtime Story Remix) by navaan (616, G, 2972 words)
There's a lot of material you can adapt into bedtime stories when your lives are larger than life.. ...or Tony tells the story of Captain America's rescue with more mermen.
4. rewrite the past by avengersincamphalfbloodstardis (Marvel, G, 1021 words)
Steve can still feel the ice sometimes; his daughter chases it away.
5. Drawings from School (Hearts and Ice Remix) by Neverever (616, T, 1222 words)
Tony and Steve's daughter Sarah comes home with her drawings, which hits Steve a little hard.
6. Simple by hollyandvice (hiasobi_writes) (MCU, T, 3504 words)
From the moment Tony offers him the ring, Steve promises himself he'll never wish for more than this. Steve wants kids, but doesn't want to pressure his husband into something he doesn't want.
7.  Not a hard-knock life (the adoption remix) by Lets_call_me_Lily(MCU, Art)
Tumblr media
8. Drawn to be Something More by MiniRaven (MCU, G, 1272 words)
Morgan Stark shows off a picture to Steve Rogers, daddy's special friend. Tooth rotting adorableness ensues.
ART/FIC CHAIN
1. mine by starksnack (MCU, M, art)
Tumblr media
2. Worth by hollyandvice (hiasobi_writes) (MCU, E, 4838 words)
Steve returns from the benefit to a Tony just as naked as he'd left him hours ago, still sprawled out on their bed in that effortlessly beautiful way he has. The only difference is that now it's the pale blue light of the arc reactor that illuminates his form, not the afternoon light that had kissed his skin earlier that day. Feelsy smut. That's it. That's the fic.
3. Let Me Help You with That (the knock 'em dead remix) by Lets_call_me_Lily (616, T, art)
Tumblr media
4. Feeling blue (Remix) by masterlokisev159 (616, Not Rated, 6072 words)
When the Superhero Registration Act came into play, no one knew what the consequences would be, least of all Tony. And from what he's heard, he didn't deal with it well. Or at all. Following the events of the Civil War, the Skrulls and Tony's recovery after Osborn, Steve and Tony no longer speak to each other, having fallen out after Tony woke up from his self-induced coma. Now, at this party, all Tony can think about is Steve.
Silently he wonders if Steve even notices him anymore.
5. safe in your arms [REMIX] by wingheads (616, T, Art)
Tumblr media
6. Reunion Gone Bad (Don't Drink That Remix) by Neverever (Avengers Assemble, T, 1894 words)
Tony is surprised to see Steve at the fundraiser, and he sure is surprised with how the rest of the evening goes too.
7. Unexpected (Remix) by jayjayverse (Marvel, G, art)
Tumblr media
8. Thank Goodness for Shields & Husbands by avengersincamphalfbloodstardis (616, G, 1178 words)
After a rude politician hurts Steph's feelings, her husband comforts her when she needs him.
9. rub a dub dub by starksnack (MCU, M, art)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
REMIX EXCHANGE
★ A Moment of Peace (Steve is a Mystery Remix) by Neverever (AA, T, 1713 words)
Steve is in denial about having a migraine and the frenetic energy of the Tower isn't helping.
Remix of The Mysterious Case of the Migraine Helper by Sadisticsparkle
★ A Place for the Desperate (A Timely Remix) by navaan (1872, M, 1701 words)
Steve thinks Tony has escaped from his cell and won't be back, so he gives in to a little fantasy...
Remix of A Farm for the Horny and the Desperate by HogwartsToAlexandria
★ accidents never happen when a room is empty (remix) by (616, E, 4999 words)
Remix of navaan’s Love Me (Not) - Steve and Tony fall into a friends with benefits relationship and Tony is completely okay with that. Right? This is my take, with Steve's POV.
Remix of Love Me (Not) by navaan
★ Breaking Through (The Caving In Remix) by DepressingGreenie (616, T, 2108 words)
All he needed to do was move all the rocks out of their way and they will be fine. They can get out of here and go home. Everything will be okay. Right?
Remix of Caving In by Cathalinaheart
★ Equivalent Exchange (The Bottled Genius Remix) by Cathalinaheart (616, T, 2267 words)
A new master changes everything for Tony.
Remix of Genius in a Bottle by Neverever
★ Even After All Those Years? (The We Keep Meeting Like This Remix) by Sadisticsparkle (Noir, Not Rated, 2500 words)
Steve Rogers and Tony Stark, from their first goodbye to their last nice to see you again.
Remix of Even After All Those Years? by DepressingGreenie
★ Fantasies by SweetFanfics (616, M, 1355 words)
When Steve asks Tony if he’s got any sexual fantasies he wants to explore with Steve, he’s mostly curious but he’s also got some expectations lined up behind the question. Tony’s the more experienced guy between them. As such, Steve expects Tony to share something kinky like, whips, chains, heat play, stuff like that. Intense things, you know? But what he doesn’t expect, is Tony to blush and look away mumbling, “Your suit.”
Remix of What Suits Your Fancy by wynnesome
★ Kinky suits (Remix) by masterlokisev159 (MCU, Not Rated, 7300 words)
Steve is so confused. He's never felt this way before. There's just something about the way Tony looks in the gloves... Something's wrong. Tony shouldn't look that good, not even in Steve's gear. There's only one solution. He has to find out more. A.k.a. Steve has a kink and Tony is on the receiving end of it. Sexy times ensue.
Remix of When We by firebrands
★ Mundane Bliss, Remix by HogwartsToAlexandria (MCU, G, 1043 words)
"What is perfect happiness? Steve Rogers could tell you."
Remix of mundane bliss by only_more_love
★ sorry about the blood in your mouth; i wish it was mine by only_more_love (MCU, E, 3500 words)
Afghanistan, never more than a handful of memories away, rears up, ugly and dissonant. His heart begins to race in anticipation of drowning. Muscle memory: it’s there, so easily accessed. Tony is kidnapped. It costs him and Steve. Dearly. Set in the nebulous period after Captain America: Civil War and before Avengers: Infinity War
Remix of Kidnapped by masterlokisev159
★ Soul Searching (The Hop, Skip, Jump Remix) by navaan (616, m, 5445 words)
Tony lives a peaceful live in Irondale and then Steve Rogers drifts into town. It's the beginning of a romance — and not all is what it seems.
Remix of a hop, skip, and a jump by SweetFanfics
★ Splintered by jellybeanforest (MCU, M, 9029 words)
Following the events of Endgame, Tony’s soul is in torment. Fractured across time and space as a result of the snap, he is doomed to relive his failures, his shortcomings and traumas, in a terrifying limbo, flitting unpredictably between different planes of existence. Natasha does her best to hold the pieces together as he crumbles, but only one thing can mend his tattered self and make Tony whole again: an undamaged template – the other half of his soul. Meanwhile, in the land of the living, Steve struggles with Tony’s death, plagued by missed opportunities, lingering what-if’s, and guilt. The Avengers send him on a final mission where he has one last chance to make it right.
Remix of This Terribly Tempered Soul by Padraigen
★ We'll Make Our Own Tradition (The Cap and Gown Remix) by wynnesome (616, E, 11,000 words)
It’s Steve’s and Tony’s anniversary. They have a date for dinner, but the workday comes first. Steve’s includes a very important business lunch. But the person who makes a beeline for him as he waits at the bar is not who he thought he'd be meeting...
Remix of A Traditional Type of Guy by jellybeanforest
Tumblr media
REMIX MADNESS
★ And All of Our Yesterdays Will Be Forgotten (a None of Our Tomorrows Can be Saved remix) by athletiger (616, M, 1335 words)
He’ll never know if Tony heard him confess his love. He’ll never know if Tony loved him back because he destroyed that. He destroyed everything.
Remix of None of Our Tomorrows Can be Saved by Ironlawyer
★ baby, please come home by only_more_love (MCU, T, 1484 words)
Months after Siberia, Tony reaches out to Steve in an unexpected way.
Remix of Sunshine by XtaticPearl
★ Bar is Open (The Last Barman Poet Remix) by DepressingGreenie (MCU, G, 641 words)
Steve finds himself attending the same wedding as his one night stand from the night before. He takes a chance, hopping to get to know Tony better.
Remix of The Last Barman Poet by nativemossy
★ Drawn to You by jellybeanforest (MCU, M, 15,989 words)
In a world where what one writes on one’s own skin appears on their soulmate’s body in exactly the same place until it’s washed off or fades, no one has ever responded to Steve’s questions written in pen. Who are you? Where are you? And once, out of sheer desperation: Wer bist du? He has tried writing up and down both arms then across his stomach in pictograms when he reckons that perhaps his soulmate is a double amputee and illiterate, but nothing. No response. He is uncertain why he is so surprised. Everything else about Steve is broken, so why not his soul? But when he points the Valkyrie downwards to crash into the deep, knowing he is about to die, he spares a few precious seconds to scribble one last message to his possibly-nonexistent, potentially-blind soulmate. Twenty-five years later, Tony Stark is born with a single phrase on his left forearm written in messy old-fashioned script. And as he grows up, the words never change: “I love you” It is both a blessing and a curse.
Remix of the words written on our skin by Cathalinaheart
★ For You I Will (A Thousand Times Remix) by ishipallthings (MCU, T, 3573 words)
During Hope and Scott’s wedding reception, Tony asks Steve for a dance. Steve turns him down, but not for the reason Tony thinks.
Remix of A Thousand Times, Once by sheron
★ Hold Hard, Then, Heart (the poetic declaration remix) by Lets_call_me_Lily (Noir, T, 2044 words)
Steve has learned to keep his feelings in check over the course of his friendship with Tony, and he thinks he's doing fine. Until he and Tony open up a curios shop together, and suddenly things become a little too much. This is much harder than that time they'd had to share a sleeping bag while adventuring out in the desert.
Remix of gripping the ledge of unreason by firebrands
★ Holding You Like Every Moment Shared (The Every Whisper That I Keep Remix) by DepressingGreenie (MCU, G, 700 words)
There couldn’t be a better time, he thinks, to give Steve the gift he brought him a few weeks ago
Remix of every whisper that i keep by Padraigen
★ i choose: me, you, us by only_more_love (MCU, T, 2753 words)
In which Tony and Steve marry, but Tony hasn't let Steve see the arc reactor—and the scars around it. Yet.
Remix of Ugly by Lacrimula_Falsa
★ Intrusive Thoughtsby jellybeanforest (MCU, M, 2471 words)
When Steve is hit with a spell that gives him temporary telepathy, Tony figures he can hide his mortifying crush on the good Captain by thinking dirty thoughts featuring each of the Avengers in turn. After all, if he’s objectifying everyone, Steve will never figure out Tony is in love with him. That’s the theory anyway.
Remix of Before you jump, Tell me what you find (When you read my mind) by Fluffypanda
★ James, Divided by jellybeanforest (MCU, G, 1390 words)
Steve and Tony are dating. Their best friends, Bucky and Rhodey, agree it’s a terrible idea, absolutely disastrous, and can only end in heartbreak. That’s about the only thing they agree on.
Remix of I'll be watching by DepressingGreenie
★ journey to the past (the things my heart used to know remix) by hollyandvice (hiasobi_writes) (MCU, T, 2316 words)
"You seek to forget the past," she whispers. "You will learn how important the past can be." In which Tony loses his memories and only a remnant of his past can restore them.
Remix of things my heart used to know, things it yearns to remember by Fluffypanda
★ Public (In)Decencyby jellybeanforest (MCU, T, 1391 words)
Steve is a big, big boy, and Tony is dickmatized.
Remix of Pool Day by Neverever
★ Seven Minutes by jellybeanforest (MCU, T, 1795 words)
When Bonnie refuses her turn in the closet with a shrimpy Steve Rogers during a game of Seven Minutes in Heaven, popular lothario-in-training/class whore Tony Stark gladly takes her turn.
Remix of Seven Minutes in Heaven by Politzania
★ Shining through the leaves of the old oak tree (the blank spaces remix) by Fluffypanda (616, Not Rated, 717 words)
Tony falls asleep during movie night
Remix of Blank Spaces by only_more_love
★ Stretch Out Your Hand and Strike All He Has by jellybeanforest (MCU, M, 6902 words)
In the aftermath of Civil War, the Avengers who sided with Tony Stark leave him one by one, until it’s just him and Rhodey ('and Honeybear is paralyzed, so it’s not like he can run,' Tony thinks, a touch hysterically). Peter is fourteen; he doesn’t count. So, when Tony calls Steve Rogers to warn him about an impending attack and realizes that Steve still holds a torch for him, can anyone really blame Tony for exacting a little payback?
Remix of The Ruins of Babel by WhenasInSilks
★ Survivor by jellybeanforest (MCU, G, 3606 words)
In 1918, Steve’s father, Joseph Rogers, dies of the Spanish flu while serving in WWI. In 1936, Steve’s mother, Sarah Rogers, dies of tuberculosis while confined to a sanatorium after contracting the disease from her job as a nurse in a TB ward. In 2014, Steve’s boyfriend, Tony Stark, contracts the flu and quarantines himself in their room, refusing to be seen until he’s presentable and not a contagious, feverish snot-monster. Steve is worried but understanding as he tries to allay his own fears about Tony’s condition. It’s the future, after all. Modern medicine has made many advances in disease management. But then on a video call with Cap, stuffed up and miserable, Tony rather dramatically declares he’s on death’s doorstep. Needless to say, Steve Rogers, the unflappable Captain America, loses his shit.
Remix of (rest assured, baby) you're adored by sheron
★ Take a Breather by jellybeanforest (616, T, 363 words)
Steve needs a break from Tony. Tony joins him.
Remix of Tokens of Appreciation by Ironlawyer
★ Trust me (“Pickle” remix) by masterlokisev159 (Ults, M, 6167 words)
Tony happens to like Steve. He likes him a lot. And sure, Steve doesn't feel the same right now, but maybe with a bit of luck and some successful sessions in the bedrooms, Tony can turn this thing around. Maybe Steve can give him a chance. Remix of "Pickle" where instead of Steve wanting bondage, he doesn't. But he wants Tony to understand and bondage is involved.
Remix of Pickle by jellybeanforest
