Stina never found joy in causing scenes. This day was no different, but it seemed that she managed to cause one anyway.

Stina didn’t even know why she did it! Definitely not the angry or hurt glances the girl with the blonde little braids and ice-blue eyes gave her (that somehow stung a lot more than the glares from all the other prodigies) when she got into fights with Sophie Foster. Nope, definitely not. Stina didn’t even know Marella well at all! Stina had no explanation as to why she felt a sharp pain in her heart- which, to be perfectly honest, she thought had gone numb a long time ago- when Marella looked at the new brown-eyed prodigy with a kind of hopeless longing. It was a mystery she did not have the proper knowledge to solve. Either that, or she just didn’t want to. Stina didn’t want to think about the latter.

It started when Stina accidentally noticed that at Marella’s table, Sophie began to invite her more renowned friends to her table. Stina also accidentally noticed how much Marella looked like a kicked puppy when Sophie and Fitz stared into each other’s eyes for a little too long, how Marella slowly ended up farther down the lunch table, farther away from Sophie and everyone else while they all talked and laughed and ate.

Sophie began to become more interested in Fitz’s younger sister after a while. The morning of the event, Sophie was twirling her golden hair with her finger as Biana ranted about her classes. Marella managed to look even more hurt this time, which made Stina feel like someone stabbed her in the chest. Why she felt so strongly about the girl with the braids, she didn’t know. She swears, she really didn’t!

Biana soon disappeared into the hallway, letting Sophie’s gaze drag along her glossy brown hair as she walked away. Marella pursed her lips, eyebrows slanted angrily. Marella stood up abruptly, stomping over to the trashcan. Sophie followed her, apparently carrying a sudden awareness of Marella’s feelings that made Stina want to slap Sophie across the face and say, “You had your chance! Go away!”

Stina couldn’t hear what Sophie and Marella were saying by the trashcan, but the furrowed brows of both girls and the way Marella waved her hand accusingly at Sophie told Stina all she needed to know

Okay, maybe that was a lie. Stina might have wanted a little more information.

“-ignoring me like I don’t exist!” Stina heard Marella yell, tears forming in her icy blue eyes. Curious prodigies began to form a circle around the two girls, murmuring about the new girl and the one with the obsession for her. Stina felt her frown deepen a little more at that word- although she still couldn’t figure out why.

“I told you I was sorry!” Sophie yelled back. “And if you really cared about being included so much, you could’ve told me how you felt!”

“I shouldn’t have to!” Marella cried. “You know how horrible they are, how they think they’re better than everyone else! Why did you want to hang out with them so bad?!”

“Because I didn’t want you following me around like a lost puppy all the time!” Sophie retorted. The whispering crowd fell silent as Sophie’s eyes widened with guilt. Tears began to spill from Marella’s eyes and onto the lunchroom floor and a broken sound escaped from her lips.

“Marella, I’m-”

“No. You’ve said enough,” Marella managed to say before breaking down into tears.

That left Stina with two options. Mind her own business, or get in front of the whole school and make a fool out of herself.

Stina was the kind of person who would definitely be more willing to choose option one. Which was why she was extra surprised at herself when she found her arms pushing herself through the crowd.

Stina felt all the staring eyes on her. Stina Heks, the girl everyone only pretended to like. What’re you going to do now? they whispered mockingly. Might as well embarrass yourself to the max, I suppose.

Stina felt a rush of adrenaline pump through her blood. You’re right. I might as well.

“Are you okay?” she blurted out to the girl with the ice-blue eyes. Everyone started whispering again and Stina could already hear some of the words being passed around like a crowd-surfing rockstar. 

“What?” was all Marella had to ask, eyebrows furrowed with confusion.

“What are you doing now, Stina?” Sophie snapped. “This isn’t any of your business.”

A fresh wave of murmurs traveled among the crowd again. Yeah, why does she care?

Are Marella and Stina Heks childhood friends?

Is this Stina’s way of insulting Sophie by stealing one of her friends?

Does Stina have a crush on Marella?

Stina pushed that last one far, far, far away.

Stina smirked at the way Sophie glared at her like she was a wicked witch coming to eat her limbs off. “It doesn’t have to be. You just told one of your friends to fuck off.” Stina had to laugh at the irony. “Aww, will you look at that? It looks like for once I’m being the reasonable one here. Sorry, Brown Eyes. It seems like you can’t be the better person in every situation anymore. Too bad.”

Sophie growled. “You don’t deserve her, better person or not.”

Stina’s smirk dropped. Something deep, deep inside her shattered like glass, unleashing a raging monster of doom onto the world. Stina laughed again, this time even harsher than before. Her laugh was about as far away from her eyes as Stina was from the stars.

“You think I don’t deserve her?” Stina snarled. “You’re the one who yelled at her in front of the whole school. How’s that for not deserving her?” When Sophie’s mouth was too unattached to her jaw to speak, Stina chose to continue.

“You think I’m such a horrible person, but then you go and treat your friends like this,” Stina spat. A sound something between a cry and a laugh bubbled up from Stina’s throat. Stina turned to the girl with the icy blue eyes red with tears and the snarky comment she was about to make died in her throat. Stina looked back to Sophie, who never tore her gaze away from the girl she hated, never bothering to look at the girl she managed to hurt for so long. Stina looked at Sophie’s other friends, glancing between Sophie and Stina nervously like this was just a petty school fight. Like their friend wasn’t choking on sobs right in front of them.

Stina scoffed. “You’re a terrible friend. I hope you know that.” And Sophie’s brown eyes widened, but never looked at Marella. Not once. Stina had no idea whether Sophie simply forgot Marella’s existence in the world or couldn’t bear to look Marella in the eye. Either one made Stina want to lay a punch to Sophie’s jaw.

Marella looked up to meet Stina’s gaze and Stina’s breath caught in her throat. The girl looked at Stina with eyes full of something Stina had never seen directed at her, not once. Something about it was intoxicating, worthy of getting drunk on every time Stina made Marella smile. It made Stina feel, for the first time in her life, a word she would never even associate with herself until now. Good.

“Are you okay?” Stina asked again. This time, she wasn’t blurting out. It wasn’t a spur-of-the-moment mistake.

Marella opened her mouth, but nothing came out. The murmuring crowd fell silent once again.

Marella walked toward Stina carefully. At first, one foot at a time, her eyes switching between her feet and Stina’s gaze. Then, finally, Marella closed the distance between her and Stina and took her hand. Stina’s heartbeat picked up as Marella looked up at her again, with that look in her eyes that made the entire cafeteria seem more vivid.

“Thank you,” Marella whispered in Stina’s ear, and it took every ounce of self-control in Stina not to shiver against her voice.

As the crowd slowly parted to let Marella and Stina back into the hallway, Stina thought to herself with a smile, That was one of the better scenes I’ve caused.

Short desc: Alden's older sister who was disowned as a teenager for being lesbian. She is currently happily married :) 

Backstory: Nikita is Alden Vacker’s sister. They grew up together and were there for each other when their abusive parents were not. She's a lot of things that Alden wasn't - he was quiet and shy and always obeyed the rules; Niki was outgoing and not afraid to question the way things were. The reason we never hear about her existence is because when she was 16, she outed herself as gay and was immediately kicked out of the house. She moved in with her girlfriend at the time, until she entered the elite levels and went on to live her life. While she attended both Alden's planting and Alvar's tribunal, she has not talked to him in forever. Alden is afraid to reach out, and tries not to think about her too much. Fitz and Biana don't even know of her existence.

biana coming to terms with her sexuality: a short fic

when biana came in sophie’s room at alluveterre late at night, rubbing her eyes and saying, “uh, can i ask you something?” in a soft, nervous voice, sophie wasn’t surprised.

this had happened with nearly every one of her friends. they would appear in her room either at night or during a period of downtime, looking like they were possessed by an idea that they couldn’t get rid of. they’d ask if they could ask her something, and sophie would say, “of course.” usually the question was something pertaining to the human world. dex had asked once if humans really had been to the moon. keefe asked if it was true that humans had schools specifically for art and music. fitz asked if humans’ minds could break and what they might do if someone was struggling mentally. sophie would answer, and the friend would stand there contemplating for a few moments, whisper a quiet “thanks,” and then leave. this had almost become routine, and sophie had actually been waiting for biana to come it at some point.

what did surprise sophie, though, was the question that biana asked.

“is it true that in the human world, you can get married to someone of the same gender?”

sophie blinked. she had never heard any elf say anything about the lgbt community, as it was called in the forbidden cities. she hadn’t even known that it was even a concept that existed for elves. “um, yes,” she said. “not everywhere. some humans think it’s sinful and treat people really bad for it. but in the country where i’m from, i think they just legalized it a year or two ago. and there are pride events for people who like the same gender or are transgender- if you don’t know what that means, it’s when someone is born as one gender but their mind doesn’t match up to it. why do you ask?”

biana didn’t reply, and at first sophie thought she was going to leave. instead, biana walked over to sophie’s bed and sat down next to her, not making eye contact. she twisted her fingers over and over again, her usual nervous habit. sophie became increasingly worried that she was going to break a bone. “elves don’t have anything like that. i’ve never known a boy who liked a boy, or a girl who liked a girl. when you get your match lists, there’s no question asking you what gender you like. i know because i’ve secretly looked at alvar’s. why?” she murmured. “why isn’t it an option for us?”

sophie turned to look at biana, who was still gazing down at the floor. it was hard to tell in the dark room, illuminated only by a few weak beams of light from where the door was cracked open, but she thought biana was blushing. she thought she knew what biana wanted to tell her, but sophie didn’t want to scare her off. “elves seem weirdly obsessed with genetic diversity and having children,” sophie offered gently. “that’s what the match lists are for, right? so it would make sense that same-gender couples aren’t considered in the lists. or,” she added, “maybe elves just don’t have that in their genes, or maybe it’s so rare that nobody thinks about it.”

biana shook her head violently. sophie wasn’t sure if she was denying something, or upset, or just clearing her head. she scooted a little closer to her friend, and wrapped an arm around biana’s slightly trembling shoulders. “are you okay?” sophie asked. “is something wrong?”

biana gave a small shrug. the two girls sat there silent together for a moment. finally, biana screwed her eyes shut and blurted out, “i think i might be broken. like something in my head has gone wrong. i know it.” she turned back up to look sophie in the eyes, her face constricted with panic. “i don’t like boys at all. never have. i hope that i will eventually, but the longer i go without liking them the less sure i am that it’ll ever happen.” she paused, and then sighed, and her whole body seemed to sag. “can i trust you?”

“of course,” sophie said without hesitating. “no matter what, i’ll always be here for you.”

“i know,” biana said. “but i’m scared. this is the first time i’ve ever said this out loud. it’s... a lot, you know?”

sophie nodded. she rubbed her thumb on biana’s neck to try to calm her nerves. it was a small gesture, but sophie wanted her friend to know that she had her undying love and support. “i know. it’s okay,” she said.

“it’s okay,” biana repeated numbly. “it’s okay? i don’t think it is. but i’m gonna have to say it at some point so i might as well do it now.” she breathed in to steady herself. “i... i think i like girls. boys are fine, but whenever i see you fangirling over my brother or... or whatever, i just don’t get it. i faked my crush on keefe because i didn’t want anybody to look at me weirdly and he seemed like a reasonable option because lots of girls like him and he would never actually like me back anyway,” she rambled. “but whenever i see a pretty girl, it’s like i freeze up, and i blush a lot, and i want to stare at her all day but i have to look away so i don’t seem weird. i denied it for so long because that’s unheard of here, but i can only hold back the truth for so long. sometimes, i make friends with a girl i like, because that’s all i can really hope for, but ninety percent of the time she just goes after my brother and that’s part of why i was so mean to you at first. i didn’t want to get hurt again.” 

she dropped her head into her hands. “i’m so sorry, sophie, you probably didn’t want to hear about this. i know it’s not right and i’m just bad and broken and i’m sorry! i’m sorry,” she cried, her voice quivering and her body heaving with sobs that she didn’t have to hold back anymore. sophie simply rubbed her back and let her cry, knowing how cathartic this all was for her. 

when biana’s sobs began to level out, sophie said, “biana. look at me.” her friend shook her head. “please. look at me.”

she slowly lifted her head as if it were the hardest task she’d ever had to accomplish. biana’s eyes were rimmed with red, and sophie could see tear tracks carving paths through her perfect face. you don’t deserve this, sophie thought helplessly. the world should be treating you better than this. 

“biana.”

“yeah?”

sophie cupped biana’s face and wiped away a tear. “you shouldn’t be sorry. this is who you are, and there is nothing wrong with you. i know you might not feel like that. but it’s true. and i’ll keep telling you that as long as you need me to.”

biana sniffled. “thanks, sophie. i don’t think i believe it yet, but i really appreciate it.” suddenly, she threw her arms around sophie, and sophie was happy to hug her back. “thank you. thank you so much.”

the two girls stayed like this for what seemed like hours, holding each other tight under the weight of the darkness and the rest of the world. finally, they separated, but didn’t move any farther than that. biana asked, “do you think it would be okay if i slept here with you tonight?” she paused. “wait, no, that sounded bad. i promise, sophie, i didn’t mean anything weird! you can say no if you want. i’m sorry!”

sophie shouldn’t have laughed, because biana was genuinely distressed, but she couldn’t help it. “relax, it’s fine. you can totally stay! i know you don’t mean anything weird.”

biana sighed with relief. “oh, okay. good.”

they sat there on the bed talking about meaningless things for a few more minutes, and then crawled next to each other under the covers. biana was tired from all the emotional vulnerability, and so she began to drift off rather quickly. as she sank into the gentle fog of sleep, biana couldn’t help thinking that maybe everything really would be okay.

(and if sophie and biana woke up in the morning cuddled closer together than was entirely necessary, what did it matter? nobody needed to know.)
