Each post in this series will cover a sow and the independent children she has that still visit the Brooks River area. This means that all current cubs are excluded, until they are emancipated -- at which point I may go back and add them. I will leave grandchildren out of these posts as much as possible, though I cannot say for sure that I will never include them.

All family tree speculation is just speculation. Unless I mention DNA evidence, do not take anything here as hard-and-true facts.

128 Grazer

128 Grazer is a beautiful, medium-large blonde sow, renown for her fiercely protective nature and take-no-shit attitude. She has had 3 known litters of cubs, in 2016, 2020, and 2024, and her cubs have generally stayed in the area post-emancipation, which makes her a great candidate for the first post in what is hopefully going to be a series. In line with my general rules, her 2024 cub will be excluded from this post until he is emancipated.

Until 2016, 128 Grazer was mostly known for one thing -- her incredible fishing skills. She was -- and still is -- widely regarded as one of the most skilled fisher bears, and unlike many other known skilled fisher bears, she didn't specialize in any one location or style. She was known to catch fish basically wherever, and whenever, she wanted.

But 128 Grazer's first known litter changed her -- she became extraordinarily protective of her cubs, and was suddenly willing to fight seemingly any bear that came too close. Subadults, single sows, sows with cubs, and even the biggest of boars! It didn't matter, 128 Grazer fought all of them, sometimes essentially unprompted. Her first litter of cubs is where the term "getting Grazered" started getting used among bear cam watchers, and it was well deserved. 128 Grazer likely learned this fierce protectiveness from her mother, who also fought basically everyone all the time to protect her cubs.

128 Grazer's Mom: 408 CC

128 Grazer was one of three cubs that 408 CC -- aka Crooked Claw, on account of the crooked claw on her front left paw -- had in 2005. This was 408 CC's only known litter, and she was last seen during the 2010 season. 408 CC is widely believed to be the sister of 409 Beadnose, the 2-time Fat Bear Week Champion and mother of 909, 910, and possibly also 717. In human terms, this would make them and 128 Grazer cousins!

2016 Litter

Grazer's first known litter had 3 cubs: a large-sized dark male, a medium-sized lighter male, and a very small light female.

These three cubs quickly came to be nicknamed by the cam viewers, in order to keep them straight -- the large male was called Walnut, the medium male was called Butternut, and the small female was called Peanut. Cam viewers affectionately referred to the 128 family group as "The Nuts". She successfully raised and emancipated all three of them in 2018, when they were 2.5 years old, as is standard for the bears at Katmai. It is worth noting, however, that Walnut was emancipated before the other two -- we'll get back to that detail in a second.

902 Fifi, aka Peanut

902 Fifi was the runt of the litter -- by a lot -- and she stayed small for as long as we saw her. She spent a lot of time with her brother "Butternut" after emancipation, as many subadults do with their siblings. For the years that we saw her on the bear cams, she was very, very playful -- perhaps even more than most subadults are. She was last seen in 2022, when she was 6.5 years old. As with all bears that leave the Brooks River area and never return, we simply don't know where she is or what she's doing. Many young bears move elsewhere within the more than 4 million acres (6,300 square miles, or 16,500 square kilometers) -- fun fact, that's bigger than the country of Montenegro -- that make up Katmai National Park as they grow up. 902 Fifi is likely one such bear.

903 Gully, aka Butternut

903 Gully is well known and well loved by the bear cam viewers, as he is, broadly speaking, quite strange. He is still very playful, like his sister 902 Fifi was, even though he is going to be 9.5 years old this year. He often plays bitey face for extended periods of time, especially with other young boars like 164 Bucky, 912 Mufasa, and 208. But while he may be a bit more playful when he's a bit older than usual, that's not what makes him unique.

There are two things that set 903 Gully apart from other bears. The first is how he got his nickname, "Gully" -- and that's that he started hunting and eating seagulls. While we have seen other bears, usually cubs, chase after seagulls, we had never seen a bear at Brooks River deliberately hunt and consume them before. And, well, the name stuck. The second is the way that he fishes the lip of the falls -- see, the other bears at brooks river stand on the edge of the waterfall, and Gully doesn't. He sits right on the edge and cranes his neck way, way down. Many cam viewers say that when he does this, he looks like a gargoyle, while others say he looks like snoopy. Whatever you think it looks like, it is definitely cute, and definitely odd, and also definitely successful -- he's one of the most successful lip-fishing bears around!

So, What Happened to Walnut?

We don't know. He appeared to be emancipated shortly before his siblings were, and we haven't seen him since. As with 902 Fifi, we may never know for sure where he went. But, there is a fan theory about who he might be, if he is indeed still in the area.

164 Bucky Dent

The evidence in favor: He looks similar to Grazer and her cubs from her 2016 litter, and he acts like them too. He is particularly playful, especially with 903 Gully, and he's also strange and innovative in his fishing techniques like 903 Gully is -- 164 Bucky sits under the waterfall and catches fish from there, completely soaking himself in the process. This behavior has earned him the nickname "shower bear" among the bear cam viewers.

The evidence against: 164 Bucky was identified as a 2.5 year old subadult of unknown parentage in 2019 -- when Walnut would have been 3.5 years old. While guessing the age of a brown bear can be very difficult sometimes, subadults are generally the easiest to estimate the age of, as brown bears grow fairly rapidly until they are about 5 or 6 years old. As Walnut was the largest cub of Grazer's 2016 litter, it seems unlikely that he would be mistaken for a 2.5 year old by the bear monitor when he was actually 3.5.

2020 Litter

In 2020, 128 Grazer had two cubs -- both female, and also nearly identical to each other.

Telling these two girls apart is a nightmare, even to this day. When they were cubs, bear cam viewers largely resorted to telling them apart by their behavior, rather than their looks -- "Grazer's Studious Cub", who diligently paid attention during her fishing lessons, and "Grazer's Social Cub", who kept running off to go hang out with subadults and other bear cubs when she should have been paying attention to her fishing lessons. The sisters were emancipated in 2023 -- when they were 3.5 years old -- and while they have grown apart a bit over the years, they are still frequently seen in each other's company.

428 Studious

428 Studious was, as mentioned, a very dutiful student. She always stuck close by her mother when she fished, and paid very close attention to her lessons. When she was a yearling, she even fished the lip independently, which is highly unusual for a cub that age! She is still young -- only 5.5 years old now, in 2025 -- but like her mother, she is growing up to be quite the incredible fisher-bear!

429 Social

429 Social was very social as a cub, and that trend has continued into her independent years. Bears 306, 307, 335 Jolly, and even her older brother 903 Gully play with her, and quite often! It's almost rare to see 429 Social around and not see her playing with someone. And though she skipped out on a lot of her fishing lessons, she is still a phenomenal fisher, especially on the lip.
