Hi fellow adventurers!! A few weeks ago i caught wind of "Delicious in Dungeon". I'm not really an anime person, but I am a TTRPG, CRPG, and cooking person- . And holy shit. It is so good i  convinced my partner to binge read the whole thing. I'm caught up on dungeon meshi, the anime, and just yesterday i also finished dungeon meshi, the manga.

Its rare to come across a serialized story that is so thematically cohesive and knows its characters so well. All of the bonus content like the artbooks and monster tidbits are just the icing on top.

So, inspired by Ryōko Kui's writing and illustration I'm going to attempt to create a recipe for every single Delicious in Dungeon recipe!-

Today that means Huge Scorpion and Walking Mushroom hotpot is on the menu!

(As always you can find the cooking instructions and full ingredient list under the break-)

OPTIONAL: your choice of dipping sauces

There was a crossover/promotional event in Shibuya which featured various realworld dishes from the series. They had one for Huge Scorpion and Walking Mushroom, but they used prawns.  while those cook better in a hotpot, they also didn't look enough like the scorpion for me, they also used udon noodles for the slime and a seaweed/kale(?) mixture for the algae. If you're looking for substitutes due to price or availability i would start with those ingredients.

AND, “what does a Huge Scorpion and Walking Mushroom hotpot taste like?” YOU MIGHT ASKI hope Senshi would forgive me for technically cooking the lobster outside the pot, once he tastes it.

Okay im always partial to veggies but wowowowowowowoowowowow the snow fungus and the mushrooms tasted soooooooooooo good in the lobster stock

A nice delicate layering of different flavors

Try to get a bite with the lobster meat and shiitake together, dip in butter then chili- trust me

Its up to you what texture you prefer if you want to put the noodles in at the end or put them in halfway through the meal. Either way dont go for eating those first as theyre very filling

I think this would pair well with a citrus drink, something light and clarifying

This would also pair well with being extremely high and hungry (if you feel safe cooking while inebriated lol) very calorically dense

For the trial run I did one lobster tail in the pot with everything else, and one lobster tail off to the side to be picked apart. The former is more in spirit with a hotpot, but it got rubbery as the meal went on and lost its nice taste. The latter may be a bit more work but all you have to do still is boil it and set it aside. I found it held up much better. It was also easier to get inside the shell.

. If you have hardshell maine lobster available, i think it would be superior to rock lobster (keep in mind crustaceans will get rubbery if cooked too long in the pot) . Green onions and/or lotus root would make excellent additions

From getting the ingredients out to sitting down and eating, id say it took maybe 30 minutes max? It'd vary on how fast you can prep vegetables and get the various implements heated.

Hotpots are not something i do very often as i'm usually just feeding myself. I think thats why a hotpot makes perfect sense to start the series off. If you want to set the tone of "take care of yourself, eat food with others, and use what you have" (generally speaking) there is nothing more simplistic, flexible, and defeats-the-purpose-if-you-eat-it-alone than a hotpot. Gather around and let your friends bring ingredients to the pot if you want to fill your heart up extra full <3

I'm doing something different here because unlike previous recipes where i used a bunch of different sources and made my own recipe out of hodge-podging it, or just used another persons recipe entirely if they did it really well, i made this more whole-cloth based off of what i had available, what I could discover through research, and my existing knowledge. Instead of the recipe being 50/50 original, this one is more 20/80. So. I'll pass the final verdict off to you guys :D 

What would you rate this recipe out of 10? (with 1 being food that makes one physically sick and 10 being food that gives one a lust for life again.) Did you love it, did you hate it? What're your thoughts on what I could do different, and what would you have done instead?

Ingredients:

2 Rock lobster tails

3 Porcini mushrooms

2 Shiitake mushrooms

Snow fungus (a good handful, should rehydrate in the hotpot)

2 Small waxy potatos

Fensi (glass noodles)

Water/lobster stock

Method:

Lightly rinse all of your vegetables beforehand and let them dry.

Vertically slice the porcini mushrooms. Cut off and dice the stems of the shiitake mushrooms. You can slice the tops if youd like.

Peel and cube the potatoes, roughly an inch each.

For the lobster tails; Boil a pot of salted water. Keep the shell on. Weigh the largest tail and add 1 minute of cooking time for every ounce of weight.

When done, strain the lobster from the water. Pour the water into your hotpot as the base. Serve the lobster on the side so people can pick the meat out to dip into the hotpot.

Bring the hotpot to a simmer. Add the potato cubes, snow fungus, mushrooms, and noodles.

OPTIONAL: this wasnt in the show, but its fun having sauces on the side :) i had oyster sauce, dry seasoned chili dip, melted butter, and soy sauce available

-BEST GIRLFRIEND/WIFE EVER! She is literally the sweetest mare ever for her partner!

-My girl knows her self-worth, and she 100% knows yours as well, and she will definitely stand up for her partner if she feels you aren't being treated kindly or with respect. "Hey! You can't talk to them like that, who do you think you are!"

-Her love languages are acts of service and gift giving! (Gift giving being mostly her baked goods...what can she say? She loves spoiling you with her baking) With acts of service, she likes very meaningful acts of service, like helping you with chores in her spare time! And she loves it when you help with her baking (as long as you aren't a disaster in her kitchen lol) and always let's you have first taste!

-As previously stated above, she really appreciates your honest opinion on her baking! (Because it's always good, I mean CMON!) And will always ask, "How's that one, Sugar? Is it your favorite? I tried a new technique this time with the oven"

-If you have an allergy, like celiac disease or a diary allergy, she WILL make you a substitute! And you know that stereotype that gluten-free cookies aren't as good? Well, NOT HERS they will be sooo good and just for you! :)

-She also is a believer in personal space. She likes time to herself where she can bake or just relax, and she wants her partner to go do whatever their talent or hobby is! She will always be waiting for you with a new baked good when you get home.

- She doesn't like long, overcomplicated pet names... she likes short and sweet ones! Mostly baking or food based obviously (Sugar, Honey, SweetPea, ect)

-When it comes to cuddles, she honestly strikes me as the type of mare to fall asleep, cuddling her partner and then waking up on the other side of the bed sprawled out lol. Besides sleeping, she likes laying her head on your shoulder/next to yours, or when laying down she lays her head on the back of your neck, almost completely on top of you "You comfortable s/o?"

-Sugar Belle as I've mentioned is so sweet, whether or not she would like to admit it she is a crier...she just thinks you're so sweet and kind and you take such good care of her and she can't believe you did this for her and- oh boy here come the waterworks...Tears mostly just well up in her eyes when you do something particularly nice for her.

- For jealousy, I'm convinced she would be passive aggressive...like she would TRY to be nice, but she would have that tone of voice that proves otherwise, yknow? Now, if she's built up enough, she might just say something... she wouldn't explode or nothing obviously but she would walk up to them and say "Hey (Insert Name), I see the way you're looking at and acting around my partner s/o, and I would like you to stop" if she said this early on she would say it in her typical sweet voice but if it was later, after she's been built up she would have such an attitude when saying it.

- When you are upset SHE gets upset she's very emotionally connected to you and if you start crying she will inevitably also tear up, she will usher you to sit down and get comfortable while she quickly whips you up something sweet, after she will ask you what happened. God forbid somepony did this.

-She would like a family one day... she would like to focus on her bakery for now, but later in life, she would love some foals or fillys:)

-This is to the point, but her favorite form of physical affection is Bunny kisses... She loves rubbing noses with you!

hi! this might be a weird question and/or one you’ve already answered, but do you have any tips for naming iterators? When I’m making ocs that’s always the hardest part for me but your iterators have really good names lol

not a weird question! i Have named like. a lot of these guys at this point lmao

i usually pick a word i like and then mash a million different words and numbers against it until i like the sound of it lmao. it leads to some names that dont feel veeery canon, but i like the names and thats what matters to me i usually run through number combos before doing more words, mainly because i dont put numbers in enough of their names i dont think. i wouldnt go above 20 for an iterator's name, and i probably wouldnt go over like. 25-30 for an ancient but thats just preference/personal headcanon. the exception for this would be words like "many" or "all" or "no", stuff like that. i would count these as substituting numbers sometimes i find the right combination really quickly, other times it takes like 20 minutes or i'm never entirely happy with the result. dune's name was really hard for me and i wasnt even really happy with "adamant" when i chose it but i decided to settle because she is Incredibly adamant and i hadnt found anything i liked better. i was fully set on her name being dune fsr lmao

something that helps is that i work an incredibly monotonous 8 to 4 job five days a week, so i stand and stare at clothes and think a lot. i choose to fill these thoughts with Strictly my ocs and stories lmao

sometimes i choose the names when im inspired by something, for example when i named flowers i chose the "one quick glance" in his name in reference to the myth of orpheus and eurydice, even though in reality flowers has like nothing in common with orpheus LMAO

when theyre NOT combos of words and numbers (things like moments at dawn or a fleck of flame) they usually came to my mind right away lol

How I feel about this character: Like him, but tbh no real deep or passionate feelings. I haven't poked his brain enough to get interested. I will say I started liking him more in the A-Kira one-shot, and not only cause his long hair was awesome, but cause I wanted to know more about WHY he was like that, what he felt all those years later about the Kira Case, how his life had gone as the new 'L'.

All the people I ship romantically with this character: Mello in a childhood rival-turned-enemy-turned-lover way; Light a very messed-up 'mutual substitutes' way; and Minoru Tanaka cause I think they should have at least met and picked each others' brains!

My non-romantic OTP for this character: Also Mello actually, sometimes I just want them to understand each other and come to like...not a moment of peace, so much as a moment of actually talking about what their childhood at Wammys did to them and their relationship as a consequence of it.

My unpopular opinion about this character: Anime Near really was boring and I had no interest in watching him. Manga Near is more interesting, but they still needed to make him more goofy. (I saw two alternate panel translations of 'Serious Near' vs 'Goofy Near' and I loved the second one.)

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: Near meeting Minoru Tanaka!!! What a freaking loss of opportunity. Also, I'm a fan of the "Near wrote Mikami's Name" theory and I'd like that confirmed or denied in canon.

My OTP: I don't have one, I don't know him well enough tbh, even the ones I do ship, it's kinda with ambivalent feelings.

When I started shipping it if I did: In December 2022 when I started writing for them! Altho tbh I'm not sure if I so much as shipped them, or if I just really liked the challenge of writing about them getting and being together.

My thoughts: Love them when they're just eternally messed with and messing with each other. I like them both individually as characters so having them together is really fun.

What makes me happy about them: Their symmetry. They just GET each other. And I love picking at their brains and poking them with a stick, and putting them in Situations together. I think their reactions are really fun.

What makes me sad about them: That in canon they were (or maybe mostly just Light, cause we never got to pick L's brain about it) too dumb to see what they'd be bored as hell without the other. That they never got the chance to actually be honest with each other before it was too late. (Altho in the anime L did try.)

Things done in fanfic that annoys me: For L, my pet peeve is the idea that his whole personality was an 'act.' I've never heard a good argument for why he'd bother. From a character standpoint, this would mean we never knew anything about him, which makes me sad. As for Light, when someone gives him too many "good" or too many "bad" traits, for whatever reason. It no longer feels like Light at some point.

Things I look for in fanfic: Mind Games :3

Who I’d be comfortable them ending up with, if not each other: I don't think they're capable of it lol, sometimes I don't even think they're capable of ending up with each other. But for the sake of it, I wanted to see more of Light and Kiyomi. and as for L, Matsuda could take care of him.

My happily ever after for them: Mind Games, but forever! :D

Who is the big spoon/little spoon: Light is usually the little spoon cause L clings like an octopus, and Light needs to breathe so he faces the other way. L becomes the little spoon if Light wakes up in the middle of the night and L's asleep but not clinging to him.

What is their favorite non-sexual activity: Dang, I can't say Mind Games again. Or arguing. Or discussing a book cause it would be to one-up each other. So I think--sharing a meal. Just the two of them quietly enjoying their food together, and even giving little bits off their plates that they think (hope) the other might enjoy. A small sign that they want the other to live, and be happy.

The creation of recasts or any black market goods/illegal trades/knockoffs will happen when a market has goods that are highly income elastic and have high elastic demand such as BJDs. In a nutshell,highly elastic means the more income someone has the more of that item they will buy (luxury goods) and that economic factors (like recessions) affect the demand of that item to a greater degree. In contrast to highly inelastic goods that you will ultimately buy regardless of price changes or market conditions as there are little to no alternatives (ex a brand name medicine whose patent hasn’t expired yet)

Taking microeconomic theory and applying it to the BJD market is a bit fascinating (at least to a nerd like me). I’ve noticed reading this blog a lot of people have a lot of well intentioned though misguided ideas about the market.

You can explain the behavior of the BJD market such as Recasts (market’s supply and demand along with elasticity); why people who can afford multiple recasts don’t buy legit (budget lines and utility maximization); why a competitive market is just as much a reason for other smaller doll companies going out of business as recasts (substitution elasticity, opportunity costs and economic profit); why companies won’t lower prices even if they can afford it (price optimization and producer surplus) and why so many new/small artists end up as scammers who may start out with good intentions but ultimately cannot deliver on preorders/goods (marginal costs and short vs long run supply costs… lol I’m willing to bet good money M0C did not factor these costs) using economic theories.

I’ve been wanting to speak on this for a while but all the passionate attitudes of anti-recasts and making the hobby “affordable” legit, I haven’t really wanted to waste my time. More people seem to be concerned with arguing things should or shouldn’t be a certain way (pro vs anti recast) more than WHY they are the way they are currently and understanding how it got to be this way.

I don’t want to come off pro-recast and argue morals when I don’t even buy recasts myself because people don’t want to try to understand economics lol. I will say though you personally choosing to buy something or not are based on your morals and preferences is apart of economics too (individual preference, utility and indifference/value of buying one item vs all other goods). This isn’t a good vs bad debate or a case for pro-recast it’s just WHY they exist and will continue to in this market. (I’m sure some of you won’t read this far though and claim I’m pro recast 😭😭)

But I do encourage anyone curious on the “why” to look up those concepts as a very base understanding (LOTS of other factors and considerations not mentioned and some theories I mentioned apply to more than one scenario in different ways). It shouldn’t change your moral/normative stance on how you personally feel but it’s interesting and knowledge is power and all that jazz. I just really had to say something this one time as I was going to rip my hair out if one more person mentioned “the market” again with no real bases in any economic theory/reasoning (no offense anon).

Going back to anon’s original assertion I would make a case that the second-hand market is not a competitive market with barriers to entry, barriers to access and barriers to information which is the main reason its unhealthy/slow and it’s even more apparent now due to the recession. Barriers like: Knowledge of second hand being HEAVILY community based (some will never seek out the community to ever know); some people won’t buy/sell from/to you unless you are established; some won’t sell to you if you won’t pay f&f; conversely some won’t buy if you only accept f&f; some won’t ship internationally or buy internationally; some even with access and language fluency won’t sell outside their country (ex. Asia based collectors who are on IG and DoA will buy from IG or DoA but only sell on Xianyu, Weibo, Naver etc); and the fact majority of the legit second hand market even with the same language are on various social media platforms and forums rather than e-commerce sites like ebay, mecari etc, that are optimized and safe for selling. Even though there are perfectly valid reasonings why people do the above in the market the result is the same, it’s still a great hinderance to maximize trade and transactions. The more trade is hindered, the less competitive and the more slow the market will be.

Although recasts DO impact the second hand market (again substitution elasticity) it’s just not one of the reasons it’s so unhealthy/slow. The second hand market is slow because it’s not a competitive market. It’s been like this since the beginning in certain ways though and it’s definitely not one person or any group of people’s fault.

I, surprisingly to myself, actually finished "I am in Eskew" and enjoyed it quite a bit (which, I guess, could have been deduced by how much I spammed in the tag) even more surprisingly, considering I'm absolutely not a horror person - I substitute horror movies with their wikipedia retellings. Unironically.

Anyway, firstly, thank you! I definitely would have never discovered it without your recommendations!

Secondly, maybe you have something else like that stashed up your sleeve? I definitely need some time to recuperate, but I would like to explore more cool podcasts. (The only two limitations: short-ish - not much longer than this one, the view of a hundred+ episodes scares me; not gorier than this one/no actual jump scares - again, I'm a scardicat.) I remember you talking about "Mabel Podcast" and at the first glance it seems neat, but I'd like to hear your comments on it first.

i do want to mention that the creator of eskew also has another podcast called The Silt Verses, personally i havent listened to it for weird brain reasons so not sure how well it fits your criteria but ive heard its also very good

mabel podcast is another favorite! the creators of mabel and the creator of i am in eskew were both inspired by shirley jackson's the haunting of hill house to an extent iirc, so even though the stories are very different some elements of them have a similar 'feel' to them imo. i will say that mabel is very different stylistically though (especially the earlier episodes) which in my experience people seem to either love or hate. whereas in eskew you get a pretty continuous narration from david or riyo, in mabel youre mostly listening in on a series of somewhat disjointed voicemail messages. id definitely recommend at least giving the first few episodes a go, dont get discouraged if you dont feel like you dont understand whats happening right away. all you really need to know about the story going in is that youre following Anna, whos a live-in carer for an old woman named Sally. Anna is trying to contact Sallys next of kin (the titular Mabel), but shes strangely out of reach.

ok i know you said youre not a huge horror person but if you ever are feeling a little more daring id suggest trying out The White Vault. theres a small amount of gore (descriptions of finding hearts and teeth) and some uh. wet ripping sounds in it but its really not that bad all things considered, just know that it is straight horror though. its a found footage podcast that follows a group of people whove been hired to check out a remote outpost in northern norway thats gone dead, but a storm leaves them stranded there, and as time goes on it becomes clear that they arent exactly alone. this ones a little longer i think, but tbh ive only listened to the first two seasons, it felt like a natural place for the story to end to me

and then on the complete opposite side of the spooky podcast spectrum, if you want something thats a ghost story but really not horror at all imo, i just finished listening to Midnight Radio a few weeks back. this ones *really* short, like 10 episodes that are ~20 minutes each short, so its definitely lower commitment. in this one youre listening in on a radio show hosted by Sibyl, who died decades earlier but can still be heard waxing poetic about her hometown in the dead of night.

ok LAST ONE havent finished it so wasnt sure if i should rec it but a lot of people on my dash hype up Archive 81 so i thought id mention it at least. guy is hired to listen through a bunch of creepy tapes in some archive out in the middle of no where. classic horror podcast stuff. similar to eskew in that it pivots from mostly being mostly anthology into an overarching plot as you go on

Okay, so I’ve been thinking about how my OC, Sophie, would fit into DE and this is what I’ve come up with so far- keep in mind I just got into DE and I don’t know everything about the lore yet, lol;

Claude, or Sophia, as he lets his friends and close confidants call him, Laurent is an officer of the RCM. He joined shortly before Kim in 29’ at the age of 20. He was assigned to mostly benign matters such as petty theft and minor vandalism, but slowly worked his the ranks.

His deductive skills were only slightly above average, but where he shined was his psyche. Naturally muscular, he also participated heavily in sports when he was younger. He’s quick on his feet and quickly gained a reputation for being able to outmaneuver criminals. His job now is mostly administrative but if he needs to offer his assistance physically, he will.

Claude is actually bigender and goes by she/he, but only goes by he/him pronouns as to not “complicate things” or “cause more trouble for himself (or those who would have a conniption about it.”) “Trouble” being a broken nose. Female at birth, he speaks in a high, nasally British accent, not too dissimilar to Cunoesse’s, only deeper. He keeps his appearance in accordance with what one would consider “traditionally masculine”. His hair is cut short, he always wears a tie, and he wears a bra that’s far too tight for him under his collared shirt in substitute for a binder.

One might call Claude “apathetic” or “cold” in demeanor. He spends no time or effort on consoling other officers or those working under him; if you’re upset by what you see on the job, that’s your issue. He rarely if ever shows interest in the personal affairs of his colleagues, and if it arrises in conversation, he will regard it only with a simple “hmm” or “interesting”. If you don’t have anything to say about the case, don’t bother. He won’t listen. Mostly silent, his temper erupts when challenged or belittled. He is cautious about pulling a weapon, but he’ll certainly threaten it, or punish criminals who dare to disrespect him by other, less drastic means. Usually, public humiliation.

Laurent struggles severely with clinical depression. He sinks himself deep into his work because he sees no need to spend his time on hobbies or recreational activities that he knows won’t bring him joy anyways. He has had feelings for Kitsuragi for some time now, but refuses to act upon them. He doesn’t know if he would even be capable of sustaining a relationship. How do you sustain love built off of a passion you can’t feel? How do you bring someone else joy if you can’t even find it for yourself? He isn’t even sure he would be the type of “man” Kitsuragi would be attracted to.

He has a sibling named Pierre (they/he) who was born without legs. He uses prosthetics and works at a library a few towns over. The two are very close, though Claude’s parents often paid more attention to Pierre than him. He doesn’t resent Pierre or his parents for this, however. Their mother was French and their father, British. Or whatever the in-game equivalents are.

“Pansexual is just another word for bisexual except now you’re being biphobic (and transphobic and homophobic) about it.” is what the post said - and here’s why i agree!

i have seen pansexual defined in millions of different ways since it first appeared. at first, pansexuality was created with the aim to substitute the bisexuality, because young LGBT kids mistakenly thought the the “bi-“ prefix (which in greek means two) meant that bisexuals were attracted to only 2 genders, so they took the prefix away and put pan- in its place, which also comes from greek but means “all” instead of “two”. just by doing this, they clearly created the pansexual label in opposition to bisexuality, advertising the neologism as being more inclusive, and i remember the definition at the time being like “attraction to men, women, trans men, trans women and non binary people” (i think you can still find this definition online somewhere lol!)

bisexuals at the time started to vocalise their discomfort with this new label, as it erased bisexual history and the true meaning of bisexuality, and they highlighted the biphobic origin of the name of the label. trans people were also very uncomfortable with it, why would you need a special label to be attracted to trans men and trans women? trans men are men and trans women are women, not some elusive extra gender. some nb people also pointed out a similar issue, u dont need a special label to be attracted to nb people… even other sexualities (like lesbian, gay, straight etc.) can be attracted and be in a relationship with nb people without it affecting their sexuality/gender identity.

at this point, instead of reading the bisexual manifesto or acknowledging the concerns of actual bisexuals/trans ppl/nb people, pansexuals came up with a new definition, the (honestly TERRIBLE) “hearts not parts”, which was called out for (again) being biphobic because like: are u saying bisexuals only care about “parts”? this defintion was not only biphobic, but also homophobic too; same gender attraction has always been seen as nasty and impure and being only about sex, and to make bisexuality (historically associated with gay people, it is the LGBT community after all) all about sex is a bit (a lot) 😬 yikes

so then the definition changed again; now it’s bi = attraction to more than one gender and pan = attraction regardless of gender and like. im sorry but that’s literally the same thing, just worded differently

so my (and many others’) question is: what’s the point of having two names for the same thing? the post i reblogged was about the dangers of microlabeling, and it being a reflection of individualism and a symptom of late-staged capitalism, and pansexuality is a stark example of that. the word bisexual is enough! as a word, it has history, depth and carries a sense of community; on the other hand, pansexuality was first born out of a misunderstanding of bisexuality and has biphobic, transphobic, and homophobic roots in its (very short) history; the definition differs only in meaningless semantics, and it does not carry any of the history nor sense of community. so like! what’s the point? is it really so important to have both? is it necessary? does it benefit anyone, apart from corporations who can now also sell pan flags and movie studios who now can call it "representation" just bc they claimed in a tweet that a character is “pan” because they want to fuck an alien but otherwise show no signs of same gender attraction? idk stuff i think about a lot i guess!!

ok so my family wanted to go see a film and this was the only title I recognized from the list so I chose this one!

I did have a bit of foreknowledge about the film going into it:

okay! so we ate some dinner and went out to catch the 10:05pm show

after like 15 minutes of ads, it finally started!

They're speaking Mandarin, woooo!!! I thought my mom would appreciate this (I was watching with my mom and two brothers; my sister was at a friend's place so she wasn't there. She should watch it tho it's gooood)

I did notice a slight accent in the Mandarin. My mom pointed out that most of the actors have Cantonese names, so this is probably why. The speaking was really good though, way more fluent than I could possibly hope to achieve lol

Also Evelyn and Waymond did that thing where they switched between Chinese and English a lot. i.e. speaking a bunch of sentences and then just randomly switching to the other language. And also some sentences are completely in Chinese, except for a couple of specific English words (e.g. "laundromat") substituted in. My parents do that a lot too!!! It was fairly common with Chinese friends who actually knew Chinese, too. e.g. "妈，我现在在mall了" c:

And she always goes on the exact same line about “it sounds the same in Chinese” too! it’s her fr fr

btw 公公 (gong gong) or the more formal 外公 (wai gong) mean maternal grandfather, but these are more commonly used in the South. Where my parents are from, I’m more familiar with 老爷 (lao ye) and 老奶 (lao nai) to refer to my mother’s parents.

They almost got me with the fakeout “the end” and premature end credits but I watched Chronicles of the Going Home Club and also I know this movie has three parts you won’t get me that easily

I love the rocks scene. Very avant-garde, and a nice little resting point in the middle of such a breakneck pace movie.

“Most universes are like this.” No life, just sand, just rocks. Daaaam.

The everything bagel. The dark circle (like on the tax papers as well). I feel like this is a metaphor for a certain thing 😥 ono. If it’s that, then this is suddenly even more heavy.

I have no idea what Waymond is saying to keep getting Evelyn off the hook with the tax people but honestly MVP. even non-Alphaverse Waymond is really a great person

Wow part 3 is short

Okay, overall, I really enjoyed watching this movie! A solid 9.1/10!

When they said “everything” in the title, they really meant it lol. I really went through the full gamut of emotions while watching this movie, sometimes all at once! More mood whiplash than Symphogear episode 1! (some people may think this is a bad thing but honestly I don’t mind it lol)

The parallel universe stuff also really reminds me of Qualia the Purple, which was similarly mind-screwy. I love that series too.

It’s not perfect, because there are a lot of frustrating parts of the movie that could’ve been avoided if Alphaverse Waymond just explained things better, or if people actually communicated properly! Also I got severe secondhand cringe/embarrassment/social anxiety just seeing that whole situation in the IRS office and how they kept digging themselves into a deeper grave by assaulting various peoples. Imagine if the multiverse people suddenly dropped all contact and now mainverse Evelyn and Waymond have to explain all this to the authorities??? im horrified just by the thought of it fjlsjgfldjgkdflg

Also the Alphaverse Waymond explanations are interesting but honestly he could not have picked a worse time lmao. The whole time he was explaining stuff in the broom closet my mind was honestly going “ok this is interesting but the taxes pls tell me they’re going to figure out the taxes???” (as you may be able to tell I’m a boring adult dsfkjlgfdgjfg)

This is like me watching Squid Game and going “oh no, but what about the (illegal) organs” bc the TASK you know what I mean??? isjgdofidjf

And the whole thing about how Gong Gong was planning on killing his granddaughter. “she can’t be reasoned with” no you didn’t try hard enough try harder. This is probably a relevant allegory in and of itself; a breakdown in communications.

Closing Thoughts

Okay but nitpicks aside I actually did overall quite enjoy this film. I can see how this might be the film for everyone, though. My interests are very specific and this ended up hitting all the right buttons for me, but this might not be the case for everyone.

My older brother enjoyed it somewhat, gave it a 8/10. He seemed particularly interested in the bagel stuff, and kept prompting discussions about it afterwards lol. My mom didn’t like it as much. She did really enjoy the mother-daughter and other family stuff because that was real and relatable, but she didn’t seem to be as into the sci-fi or fighting stuff. She did find the scenes with the tax lady funny though, because she said she does have to do the taxes every year. When I asked her for a rating, she said it was half/half, gave it a 5/10. My little brother said he didn’t really like it, gave it a 3.3/10 at best. (But that’s fine, he didn’t like Symphogear either, so I guess our tastes just don’t really align that much 😅)

We did see the Shang-Chi movie last year, so I asked my family for their ratings on this movie as well for comparison (since also Chinese actors and relatable ABC stuff). My brothers gave this one a 7/10, but for my mom it was a 4/10.

When the sci-fi verse jumping stuff started coming in in the elevator scene, I thought it would shift from a more personal-scoped story to a broader, universe-threatening type of story. But I do like that it ended up circling on itself and ended up still being a family-scoped kind of story. No need to introduce like. Extra organizations or governments or random extradimensional threads. It works better when everything wraps around to still be related to the family.

This is maybe the reason why I also enjoyed Ryuusei no Rockman 1 more than Ryuusei no Rockman 2. in the first game, many of the newly created antagonists are directly related to Subaru’s close friends and adjacent neighbourhood, so it feels, closer, more personal of a story. The second game had various randos from foreign lands as antagonists, so I felt kinda less emotionally invested in the second game.

Y’know what I mean?

This is also a trap I hope Squid Game doesn’t fall into when season 2 comes out. Sure there’s this ORGANIZATION and BOSSES and CONSPIRACIES going on or whatever, but tbh it’s the family dynamics and interpersonal relationships that really drew me in in the first place, because those aspects were more relatable for me. I’m not as invested in this front man or these rich people doing rich and powerful people things, it’s just not as interesting to me. But maybe that’s just me.

Anyway enough rambling, I liked this movie, it is an EXPERIENCE. Definitely would rewatch. Graph theory verse jumping mechanics are super interesting, might explore these in some fanworks someday c:

“Daisy!!!” Gyuri squeals once she sees you, running out of her father’s embrace the moment Mingyu kneels down and lets her go.

“Hi Lili,” you grin and accept her hug, your arms trapping her in. You look up at her father standing in front of you, and you greet him with a shy smile before you stand up with Gyuri in your arms. “Hi Gyu.”

“Hi,” he’s adorably holding back a grin at the name, and instead settles for a tight smile and a squeeze on your arm. “Why are you outside?”

“I’ve just arrived actually,” you chuckle, telling him Jisoo and the others are waiting. You turn around and tell the waiter that you have a table under Kim Jisoo, so he nods in return before telling you to follow him inside. Gyuri can’t stay still in your arms, constantly moving around as if she’s trying to dance. “You’re super excited, aren’t you?”

Gyuri nods fervently, her small fingers playing with your hair as she tells you about how much she’s been looking forward to the lunch meeting. You grin at this, and Mingyu scolds her so she won’t move too much because she’s already heavy as it is.

“Lili not heavy!” she gasps in horror. “Papa heavy.”

You look at Mingyu in amusement as he pretends to clutch his heart and tells her how hurt he is. But Gyuri doesn’t seem to care, simply sticks out her tongue as she clutches herself closer to you.

“Oh, did you come together?” Jisoo asks when the waiter leaves the private room after guiding you and Mingyu, and then takes Gyuri from your arms as the girl giggles when Jisoo tickles her belly.

“No, I was just about to go in when they arrived,” you explain, thanking Mingyu for pulling out your seat before he settles on the seat beside you, Gyuri’s baby chair on his other side. Jisoo and Jennie share a knowing look at the interaction, but they don’t say anything about it just yet and Jisoo instead asks you about the trip to Japan as if she didn’t practically call you everyday then.

“You,” you narrow your eyes at Jennie. “…have a way of putting on schedules that I don’t feel tired until I get on top of the hotel bed.”

“I’m amazing, aren’t I?” Jennie grins, taking note of the way Mingyu’s arm is limply hanging down with his elbow resting on the edge of your seat. “I know I have to keep you moving so you won’t get exhausted in the middle.”

It’s Mingyu who replies, shaking his head as he remembers how tired you looked by the end of the trip. “You know her feet almost gave up because of the heels?”

“Don’t tell me you got through all that schedule with heels?” she turns to you with a scandalized look.

Again, it’s Mingyu who answers while you pout at her. “No, I told her to change into a plain pair of sneakers by day two.”

“Didn’t you only pack your heels and a streaking red Converse?” Jisoo frowns, remembering how you tell her you would not need three pairs of shoes even though she insists you should bring one more pair so you could ‘color code your fashion’.

You bite your lip and glance downwards when Mingyu helpfully supplies for you. “Yes. I told her to buy a pair of white shoes with my card but she wouldn’t budge, so I bought one myself and forced her to use it.”

Your face burns at the memory, the picture of Mingyu appearing in front of your hotel room with an Alexander McQueen paper bag still clear in your mind. You have initially refused, too flustered at the sudden, overpriced gift, but Mingyu insists you take the shoes and wear them instead of the heels during meetings, or he’ll just throw them away somewhere outside the hotel. Naturally, you have no choice but to comply and accept.

You still have no idea how he got your size right.

“Wait, is that why you asked me about my size?” Jisoo cuts, something clicking in her mind.

“Yeah. I remember you said you have the same size as her.” Mingyu is looking at your friend, but the grin on his face makes you jittery inside. Did he need to do that just to make sure you wear comfortable shoes? “You thought I was buying you shoes, huh?”

Their bickers fade out in the background when you catch Jennie’s knowing glance, her eyebrows shoot up as if to ask if you’re still in denial when Mingyu does all that for you without anyone asking him to. You don’t know how to react to her, so you simply shrug before you turn away from her prying eyes.

It’s been roughly two weeks since you’ve come back from the trip and, despite your ongoing denial about Mingyu’s interest towards you, you’re just downright lying if you say the relationship between the two of you hasn’t rapidly progressed since.

After that night in the festival, something shifts between you and Mingyu more than it did before. He gets bolder with his touch; brushing his fingers against yours every chance he has, eyes boring into yours like you’re always in interrogation, and even offers to take you home everytime he catches you working overtime (Seungkwan notices all of this, and the first thing he did was to ask if you took his advice and actually shoot your shot). There are also the sudden phone calls when you’re off work, ones that he blames Gyuri for even though you usually end up talking to him more than you do Gyuri.

You’re far from complaining, but you still don’t know what to do with the whole situation. And while you’re no longer in denial about your feelings for the guy, your brain still refuses to accept that Mingyu might even be remotely interested in you. There’s just… no way.

It doesn’t make sense.

You can’t explain why, but it just doesn’t.

“You’re spacing out again,” Mingyu mutters from beside you. “Are you sure you’re okay?”

“Yeah, yeah,” you smile hesitantly. “Just… some stuff on my mind.”

“You’ve been doing that a lot, you know?” he frowns, worry painted clear on his face. “Are you overworked? Should I ask Seungkwan to take some of your workloads?”

You immediately wave your hands at that, telling him it’s not about work and your workload is fine as it is. Mingyu doesn’t seem like he buys it, but he knows he’s not in a place where he can push it, so he settles for an ‘are you really sure?’ and lets it go when you give him a nod with a small smile that doesn’t quite reach your eyes.

It isn’t long until your smile turns genuine though, and when he follows your line of sight, he finds Gyuri bursting into giggles on Seungcheol’s lap. He says something that Mingyu can’t hear, but her eyes turn big and she gasps lightly at whatever he’s whispering and then happily squeals when Seungcheol drops a big kiss on her cheek.

“Lili eats with Uncle Cherry!” she declares to the table. Mingyu just chuckles and nods, well aware that Seungcheol has always had ways with children and he’s easily Gyuri’s favorite uncle out of all his friends.

“Used to heartbreak, huh?” you jokingly say to Mingyu.

“As long as it’s not because of you,” he boldly says with a wink, his voice so low that it’s only you who heard him.

You look at him with mock disguise, gently punching his arm to cover up the fact that you’re flustered beyond measure. It doesn’t work though, because his grin doesn’t falter and you’re certain Mingyu knows you enough by now to be able to tell when you’re embarrassed.

“Anyway, where’s your husband?” you turn to Jennie instead, eyes dropping to her huge belly. You’re truly unsure if Jennie is in an okay condition to have a lunch meeting outside, she’s probably on that stage where she can be in labour just about anytime and you feel like you’re more nervous than she is about the whole thing.

“He wanted to join us, but Hansol suddenly called, said he needs help in the garage or something,” Jennie shrugs nonchalantly, taking a sip of the iced tea in front of her. “It’s okay, I see him enough already. He’ll join later if he can or he’ll just pick me up.”

“Auntie Nini, baby here?” Gyuri softly pokes her belly, having moved from Seungcheol’s lap to Jisoo’s.

“Yes. A little more and you can meet the baby,” she beams at the little girl who’s still so fascinated with the fact that there’s a baby inside her auntie.

Just then, the door opens and the waiter comes in with the food you’ve all ordered, prompting everyone to stop conversing and almost immediately starts digging in the moment the door closes back. True to her words, Gyuri is back on Seungcheol’s lap while the guy patiently feeds her before he takes a bite himself. Next to him, Jisoo is busy helping Jennie who sits beside her, putting food on her plate and helping her move her seat so she can eat comfortably.

And then there’s Mingyu who is doing the same; his chopsticks are busy placing food on your plate with food that he declares ‘to die for’ and ‘you haven’t lived if you haven’t tried’. If your friends notice this strangely intimate gesture, they don’t say anything about it.

The lunch goes pleasantly like always, and when the meal is done, Jennie decides she wants dessert which Gyuri delightfully agrees to. Mingyu tells her she’s only allowed to have dessert if she goes back to his lap after being with Seungcheol the whole time. Gyuri whines, but eventually says she wants to sit with you because ‘Lili can sit with Papa tomorrow’.

“I’m sad, Flower. I really am,” he dramatically says, earning a snicker from Jennie and Seungcheol while Gyuri simply giggles at her father’s forced pout. She waves her hand though, signaling him to get closer so she can kiss him on the cheek. Your breath hitches when he leans down to Gyuri on your lap, his hair faintly grazes your arm as he does so.

“Love you, Papa,” she whispers between giggles, the soft words warming your heart beyond control. And as if that’s not enough blow to your heart already, Mingyu whispers the words back to her with the happiest smile you’ve ever seen across his face.

“You guys are so mushy,” you scrunch your nose, feeling a little weird to be witnessing the interaction in such close proximity. It’s a good weird, though, one that makes your heart buzz in content and the butterflies in your stomach fly just enough to make your inside flutter without being too overwhelming.

You don’t know if it’s good that a part of you longs to continue witnessing this in the long run.

Mingyu always makes sure not to check his phone first thing in the morning when it's the weekend. Weekends are usually reserved for his family and, most importantly, Gyuri, and he knows himself enough to know that he’d be replying to emails and reading updates despite it being weekends if he checks his work phone because that’s just how dedicated he is to his job.

That said, Mingyu frowns when he wakes up to an empty bed, his daughter nowhere in sight. Did his mom take her? He gets up from the bed, stretching his arms up as he walks out of his old room in his parents’ house without even bothering to bring his phone with him.

It’s been sometimes since his parents come back to Seoul and, everytime they do, they’d have Mingyu stay over in their house along with his child. They’ve called him a few days ago, telling him they’re flying back to Seoul over the weekend and he should bring Gyuri with him to sleep over.

“Morning,” he sleepily groans as he makes his way to his mom’s garden, Gyuri comfortably sits on his mom’s lap as she nibbles on her bread. He drops a kiss on top of her head and then his mom’s, taking the empty seat beside them. “Did she wake up early?”

“It’s you who woke up late, son,” his mom scolds playfully. She's a little tense despite her smile, Mingyu notices, a telltale that she has something to say but isn’t sure how to bring up. So Mingyu kindly throws the bait and asks if something’s up.

His mom would usually spill right away once he asks, but she seems almost hesitant this time, taking her time to answer. An alarm quickly rings in his mind; Mingyu has never been this nervous in front of his mom since the time he had to tell his parents he got someone pregnant. He looks at his daughter for comfort, her presence has always been able to calm him down no matter what and he’s glad he insists on keeping her even if he has to do it alone.

“Why didn’t you tell me you were dating—uh, what was her name… Daisy?”

Mingyu violently coughs at the mention of you, wondering how on earth his mom came up with this question at 8 in a Saturday morning. Gyuri lights up at the name, but the two adults don’t really answer when she asks if you’re coming.

“You mean [Y/N]?” he makes sure, stalling time. “How did you know her?”

“Lili calls her Daisy,” she shrugs, her calm face scaring him more than it should. “Lili called you with my phone when you were in Japan, remember?”

“Oh, right. And… no,” he answers hesitantly, something that his mom catches but doesn't comment on just yet. “She’s Jennie’s temporary substitute. Gyuri just likes her a lot. Where did that even come from?”

His mom doesn’t answer immediately, simply hums before she fumbles with her phone and pushes it in front of his face. He recognizes the place immediately, as it was just last week that he was there with you and the others. There’s a picture of you, Gyuri, and him there, with Gyuri safely in your arms. Both of your faces are blurred in contrast to Mingyu's, his wide grin clearly caught on camera.
