A Guide to Historically Accurate Regency-Era Names

I recently received a message from a historical romance writer asking if I knew any good resources for finding historically accurate Regency-era names for their characters.

Not knowing any off the top of my head, I dug around online a bit and found there really isn’t much out there. The vast majority of search results were Buzzfeed-style listicles which range from accurate-adjacent to really, really, really bad.

I did find a few blog posts with fairly decent name lists, but noticed that even these have very little indication as to each name’s relative popularity as those statistical breakdowns really don't exist.

I began writing up a response with this information, but then I (being a research addict who was currently snowed in after a blizzard) thought hey - if there aren’t any good resources out there why not make one myself?

As I lacked any compiled data to work from, I had to do my own data wrangling on this project. Due to this fact, I limited the scope to what I thought would be the most useful for writers who focus on this era, namely - people of a marriageable age living in the wealthiest areas of London.

So with this in mind - I went through period records and compiled the names of 25,000 couples who were married in the City of Westminster (which includes Mayfair, St. James and Hyde Park) between 1804 to 1821.

So let’s see what all that data tells us…

To begin - I think it’s hard for us in the modern world with our wide and varied abundance of first names to conceive of just how POPULAR popular names of the past were.

If you were to take a modern sample of 25-year-old (born in 1998) American women, the most common name would be Emily with 1.35% of the total population. If you were to add the next four most popular names (Hannah, Samantha, Sarah and Ashley) these top five names would bring you to 5.5% of the total population. (source: Social Security Administration)

If you were to do the same survey in Regency London - the most common name would be Mary with 19.2% of the population. Add the next four most popular names (Elizabeth, Ann, Sarah and Jane) and with just 5 names you would have covered 62% of all women.

To hit 62% of the population in the modern survey it would take the top 400 names.

The top five Regency men’s names (John, William, Thomas, James and George) have nearly identical statistics as the women’s names.

I struggled for the better part of a week with how to present my findings, as a big list in alphabetical order really fails to get across the popularity factor and also isn’t the most tumblr-compatible format. And then my YouTube homepage recommended a random video of someone ranking all the books they’d read last year - and so I present…

The Regency Name Popularity Tier List

The Tiers

S+ - 10% of the population or greater. There is no modern equivalent to this level of popularity. 52% of the population had one of these 7 names.

S - 2-10%. There is still no modern equivalent to this level of popularity. Names in this percentage range in the past have included Mary and William in the 1880s and Jennifer in the late 1970s (topped out at 4%).

A - 1-2%. The top five modern names usually fall in this range. Kids with these names would probably include their last initial in class to avoid confusion. (1998 examples: Emily, Sarah, Ashley, Michael, Christopher, Brandon.)

B - .3-1%. Very common names. Would fall in the top 50 modern names. You would most likely know at least 1 person with these names. (1998 examples: Jessica, Megan, Allison, Justin, Ryan, Eric)

C - .17-.3%. Common names. Would fall in the modern top 100. You would probably know someone with these names, or at least know of them. (1998 examples: Chloe, Grace, Vanessa, Sean, Spencer, Seth)

D - .06-.17%. Less common names. In the modern top 250. You may not personally know someone with these names, but you’re aware of them. (1998 examples: Faith, Cassidy, Summer, Griffin, Dustin, Colby)

E - .02-.06%. Uncommon names. You’re aware these are names, but they are not common. Unusual enough they may be remarked upon. (1998 examples: Calista, Skye, Precious, Fabian, Justice, Lorenzo)

F - .01-.02%. Rare names. You may have heard of these names, but you probably don’t know anyone with one. Extremely unusual, and would likely be remarked upon. (1998 examples: Emerald, Lourdes, Serenity, Dario, Tavian, Adonis)

G - Very rare names. There are only a handful of people with these names in the entire country. You’ve never met anyone with this name.

H - Virtually non-existent. Names that theoretically could have existed in the Regency period (their original source pre-dates the early 19th century) but I found fewer than five (and often no) period examples of them being used in Regency England. (Example names taken from romance novels and online Regency name lists.)

Just to once again reinforce how POPULAR popular names were before we get to the tier lists - statistically, in a ballroom of 100 people in Regency London: 80 would have names from tiers S+/S. An additional 15 people would have names from tiers A/B and C. 4 of the remaining 5 would have names from D/E. Only one would have a name from below tier E.

I was going to continue on and write about why Regency-era first names were so uniform, discuss historically accurate surnames, nicknames, and include a little guide to finding 'unique' names that are still historically accurate - but this post is already very, very long, so that will have to wait for a later date.

Methodology notes: All data is from marriage records covering six parishes in the City of Westminster between 1804 and 1821. The total sample size was 50,950 individuals.

I chose marriage records rather than births/baptisms as I wanted to focus on individuals who were adults during the Regency era rather than newborns. I think many people make the mistake when researching historical names by using baby name data for the year their story takes place rather than 20 to 30 years prior, and I wanted to avoid that. If you are writing a story that takes place in 1930 you don’t want to research the top names for 1930, you need to be looking at 1910 or earlier if you are naming adult characters.

I combined (for my own sanity) names that are pronounced identically but have minor spelling differences: i.e. the data for Catherine also includes Catharines and Katherines, Susannah includes Susannas, Phoebe includes Phebes, etc.

The compound 'Mother's/Grandmother's maiden name used as first name' designation is an educated guesstimate based on what I recognized as known surnames, as I do not hate myself enough to go through 25,000+ individuals and confirm their mother's maiden names. So if the tally includes any individuals who just happened to be named Fitzroy/Hastings/Townsend/etc. because their parents liked the sound of it and not due to any familial relations - my bad.

I did a small comparative survey of 5,000 individuals in several rural communities in Rutland and Staffordshire (chosen because they had the cleanest data I could find and I was lazy) to see if there were any significant differences between urban and rural naming practices and found the results to be very similar. The most noticeable difference I observed was that the S+ tier names were even MORE popular in rural areas than in London. In Rutland between 1810 and 1820 Elizabeths comprised 21.4% of all brides vs. 15.3% in the London survey. All other S+ names also saw increases of between 1% and 6%. I also observed that the rural communities I surveyed saw a small, but noticeable and fairly consistent, increase in the use of names with Biblical origins.

Second off, I wanna say that pet play is such a BROAD kink there’s no “correct” way to answer your question! I highly advise you to do more research than what I answer :] if you’d like more specifics just let me know! I’ll post something more in depth!!

So, to break it down more simply, pet play is just another form of dominant/submissive kink (doesn’t always have to be, but commonly is! It’s totally alright to have dom on dom or sub on sub stuff as well!) It’s a type of relationship where one (or more) partners will take on a more animalistic role/trait abt themselves! Most relationships will take on an owner/pet relationship, where the owner has a more dominant role over their submissive pet. Like I said, there are variants of pet play relationships though, so research up!

Pet play comes in varying degrees of…hm I guess intensity? Some people are more strict in their versions, whereas other people prefer a relaxed style. Since pet play is a ROLE there isn’t really a limit to what is and isn’t allowed in it. Popular pet roles include puppies, kittens, bunnies, ponies, and even cows! To some, simplistic dominant/submissive roleplay with pet like terms is good, to others dressing as full leather/latex adorned puppies is their schtick. It’s all up to personal opinion! There’s plenty of costumes, gear, and accessories to help aspiring pet players find what they wish to engage in. Me personally, I consider myself about a mid-level pet player. I like tails and ears, I like leashes and muzzles, and I absolutely adore being called and treated as a puppy. Many pet players will also use real pet items, such as food dishes or crates/kennels, to enhance their experience.

Another thing abt it is that pet play can be paired with other kinks! I myself have quite a few tacked on there, they’re listed in my pinned post if you’d like to see! Behavior and reward/punishment are common in pet play, so is praise, lots of stuff really! Once again it’s just a matter of preference!!

Now, let’s get to what pet play is NOT:

- Pet Play is not beastiality

- Pet Play is not inherently furry centered (though you can be both!!)

- Pet Play is not gross

All scenes and relationships within pet play should be consensual, of age, and made with firm expression of boundaries and limits. LIGHTS OUT!

hey everyone! if you're seeing this, then you're probably wondering: what IS Lights Out?

Well, I'm here to answer those questions.

Lights Out is an au of bfb/bfdi/tpot/(whatever other acronyms ya want for the show!). More specifically, of bfb, starting around the time of bfb 3-10.

Lights Out is a horror au that centers around Liy snapping after her elimination, escaping the EXIT, and going totally apeshit.

Lights Out was originally an au that I created back in 2019, and worked on with my old friend for a bit. But we never got anywhere, and he's not really my friend anymore, so I figured I'd just do it myself (with some help from a new friend! Sorry old friend. I won't post your name here in case anyone wants to hate on you for...whatever reasons. People are strange.)

Lights Out is a horror au, and features blood and gore, violence, death, trauma, hallucinations, weapons such as knives, baseball bats, and other creative things she finds ways to use. (And maybe a gun? I dunno.) and psychological horror. If you're a little kid, or you're sensitive to these topics, I don't recommend reading it.

That being said, if you're continuing, you prolly like this kinda stuff. So let's move on!

He's very careful not to buy anything too heavy if there's a chance you might be the one who has to move it

He's just very thoughtful and considerate about the whole thing

He's another one who can help lift and carry things!

He's strong and used to lugging around heavy equipment from his sets, so he never minds helping

He'll also give you piggyback rides if you need to get somewhere but walking hurts too much

He's pretty handy, so he can help you set up various pulley systems and stuff to get groceries into the house and do other heavy lifting for you

No matter what, he won't leave you alone when you need his help. He's here for you!

Nick:

First of all, he knows where to get the good painkillers. Which also means he knows which doctors to go to for different types of pain

He's got a lot of chronic pain too, so he totally sympathizes and offers his best suggestions to help

He knows yoga routines to help ease pain, he's got teas and supplements to help with inflammation, he can even help you with stretches to make it better

He's got a wheelchair for his bad days, and he doesn't mind you borrowing it when he's not using it

He's the one who understands your situation the best

Joseph:

This man has magic hands. Seriously, a massage from him can relieve even the worst pain

He's also plenty strong and able to carry or lift things for you as needed. Or carry you as needed

When you're having a particularly bad day, he'll tell you to stay in bed and give him a list of things that needs to get done that day. He'll do all your chores for you while you rest!

He'll bring you absolutely anything you need, he doesn't want you getting up any more than you have to

He's the most attentive and helpful boyfriend!

Jean:

His go-to way to make you feel better when you're in pain is to make you hot chocolate and freshly baked cookies!

He'll hold you and listen to you complain about your bones, and he'll comfort you sweetly

He worries about you a lot, so he'll often follow you places to carry things for you, even if it's very far out of his way. He doesn't want you hurting yourself when he's not there to help!

You'll want for nothing while he's around, he'll bring you anything you need, no matter where you are

He worries so much about you, he just wants you to be okay!

Bo:

He's the kind of puppy who loves to take a bath, so when your bones hurt, he'll run a hot bath for both of you

He's very gentle with you when you're in pain. He can forget his own strength sometimes when he hugs you, but he makes sure not to hurt you

Instead, he puts that strength to good use, helping you with absolutely anything you need

He hasn't really got much else to do, so he'll just follow you around all day, doing whatever physical tasks you need!

It's not only the amazing story between Jaemin and his girl, but also expands the au so much and brings it to life. The ending made me feel like I was watching the finale of the last season of a TV show. So so good. Like I said, the parts can be read separately, but they're stronger when read in order. <3

My hanahaki chapter might have a more bittersweet ending note, maybe ? (☀️​🌻, kinda unrequited feelings but it's imply that it won't be for long...and a part 2 is in the work that confirm it becomes mutual)

Sometimes but rare enough. I usually delete comments if they pass the limits (insults, slurs, death threats, suibaiting,…)

I don't really mind people stating their opinions as long as it stay polite and don't pollute the comments too much.

9. Do you write s.mut?

YES!! I try to include it in a natural and casual way, especially in multi-chapters fics, because that's what I like to read. It's part of life so it's only natural that it's also part of the characters' life.

I'm aroace & both romance- and sex-repulsed so I'm a little picky with what I like and writing those (romance&sex) can be a little bit of a challenge sometimes.

10. Do you write crossovers? 

I never did and don't plan to in the future but you never know. Probably not though, not really my thing.

11. Have you ever had a fic stolen? 

Not that I know of.

12. Have you ever had a fic translated? 

Not by someone else. I translate my OMORI fics in french little by little myself. It's my first language but somehow writing is easier in english ?

13. Have you ever co-written a fic before? 

Nope, and I'm not sure I could.

14. What’s your all-time favorite ship?

Well, outside of poly ships (cause I really can't chose between those), I guess Sunflower ? It became such an OTP, that I feel genuine distress if I try to read an OMORI fic where they're explicitly not together.

15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?

None. Unless something happens to me, I will finish all of them even if it takes me years :)

16. What are your writing strengths?  

Um...I've been told that the way I write the characters dynamics is good ? I dunno, if there's some of my readers that see this and want to let me know what they think is my writing strengths, go ahead !

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

Beside the way my disability mess with my ability to write so much that I need to use text generation (NovelAI) as an assistive tool ? I dunno, that's kinda the bigger one (￣ ￣|||)

Translating thoughts into words is pretty hard for me so...yeah.

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?

I think I would only do it for a language I can speak well enough to not mess up too bad ?

What kinds of traits make a butch butch or masc? Is it just solely looking more masculine like is there a certain quantity of masculinity you have to reach in order to be masc?

I think I to the outside look really really femme but I never feel that way or feel good using that as a label. If I had to pick between femme and masc I would probably choose masc or butch. honestly and surprisingly to me the label I feel best about calling myself in my head is just dyke lol so I guess my question is is there a label for someone like me? Who feels masc but looks femme? Or should I just go for a label not needed kind of vibe? Lol

(For context I’m 26 but I’ve only recently realized I’m a lesbian in the past 6 months or so so I’m very new to the culture but I want to participate as much as I can! <3)

that’s a very good question and a very complex one! i’ll do my best to give an answer, speaking as someone who loves butches and is exclusively attracted to butches, who has had butch lovers and friends. however i am not butch myself, so keep that in mind. i’ll also speak to butch only in a lesbian/sapphic sense since that’s the context on my blog.

to me, butch is an identity term grounded in lesbian/sapphic community that’s connected to chivalry, tenderness, courage, authenticity, and ways of being that can be described (depending on cultural contexts) as masculine. this can mean many different things to different people. there is no specific “quantity” of masculinity necessary to be butch. some butches might not describe themselves as masculine at all. to me ‘masculine’ is just a word, a useful one yet with certain limits, that we use to gesture broadly to a mode of dressing and carrying oneself, but it doesn’t resonate with every butch i’ve met. i know they say a good definition doesn’t include the term being defined but the best word to describe a butch, is butch. i will say that a butch way of dressing and acting is integral to the identity. if that doesn’t feel like you, then you might not be butch. i invite any of my butch followers to add their perspectives in the replies!

it’s completely fine and wonderful to settle into ‘dyke’ as your identity label!! you can be a lesbian without being butch or femme. we are really just a subculture within lesbianism. ‘masc’ is also a great label that doesn’t have the same community connection and historical weight as butch, but it’s useful for describing your aesthetic/style as a lesbian. you can combine elements of masculine and feminine styles! you can do whatever feels good and makes you happy. ☺️

not actively? during my batman/b*tjokes years (bearing in mind I was about 14) I used to get occasional hate on tumblr due to trans/gay headcanons but that wasn't necessarily fic related. I also once had a pretty big b*tjokes writer comment on an old fic (like three or four years after I'd written it, when I was no longer In The Fandom) claiming I'd stolen their ideas and needed to either remove my work or credit them despite. only having read a few of their works very briefly. the work of mine in Question being a prompt fill. and me just following a lot of the trends of the fandom at the time? like sorry you don't actually have a trademark on hurt/comfort sick fics buddy it's a Fairly Popular Concept. anyway yeah that's about it.

9. do you write smut? if so, what kind?

nope <3 I've never tried and frankly I don't think I'd be very good at getting any ideas I have Across in a way that reads as sexy or hot enough to warrant actually writing it lmao

I don't think I've fully written or published any crossovers, however! every character I've ever liked has been thrown into a killjoys au in my brain at one point or another (including but not limited to: the scooby doo gang, the penumbra pod gang, the eos 10 gang, Cecil and Carlos wtnv, ect). myself and jon plotted a whole magnus archives/mst3k au that I Wish one of us had written, and another mst3k/the mechanisms au that started as a joke and become so insanely important to us it sincerely helped us get together as a couple. we also had an overall eos10/penumbra podcast crossover that I personally never wrote anything for but I think jon Started some unpublished fics that never got finished.

argh I can't choose one all time favourite. jonmartin themagnusarchives are insanely dear and important to me, jongerry / jonmartingerry are closely behind that. poly scooby doo gang. vince/howard from the mighty boosh. these are all just sentimental ships if I'm honest. also I became ridiculously attached to mine and Jon's crackship of jonny d'ville themechanisms / Mike mst3k

15. what’s a wip you want to finish but doubt you ever will?

honestly I'm kind of past the point of hoping to get back into writing due to. complete lack of willpower. but I wish I'd gotten round to writing the third trans Hardy fic I had planned at one point </3

idk!! I think I'm good at capturing like. very specific moments of domesticity and comfort. and I think when I'm imagining A Scene I'm quite good at getting the vibes of that scene across. but other than that I'm really not sure

oh god uhh. actually writing. linking scenes together. Plot other than just vague "here's two characters hanging out and existing". the list goes on

18. thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?

I don't think I've actually attempted it myself? due to most characters I've written have been. incredibly British. I will say a pet peeve of mine in Reading a fic is when it is a fic in 99% English that'll have a large chunk of dialogue in another language, without a translation available somewhere for it. like a word or two is fine but if there's some actual plot in there and you're expecting me to Google translate it, that feels kind of the same as when subtitles simply say (speaking french) or whatever instead of Telling Us What They're Saying

Hey there! I've been hard at work on my next CC pack and, in short, it's going to take a lot longer than the previous ones (I'm giving myself a soft deadline at 2 weeks to keep myself from an unhealthy level of time-crunch). It might be ready sooner that I'm expecting, but I figure I might as well keep this blog up to date on my goings-on.

I've only made 3 proper CC character packs so far, and I plan to make several more, but you might reasonably be wondering why. It's 2023, I feel like most people are kind of over Sims 4/MHA/at least the mixture of the two for a while now.

I got into the game after EA made it free to play, and I honestly don't love the idea of paying for expansions and other nonsense. That said, without these, Sims 4 just isn't that fun or interesting, so I've gotten quite into the whole CC thing. It's a nice alternative to paying a bunch of money for off-brand Stranger Things and Star Wars and whatever. But it's been very limiting as well.

CC opens the horizons for playing Sims 4 with a wide variety of characters and kind of keeps the excitement going without needing any more real juicy Sims stuff. It's honestly just fun to see these little guys doing their thing sometimes because, like, that's Todoroki learning how to cook, Kaminari is learning to play guitar and talking about music with Jiro. It's fun.

But when that reality breaks, it feels kinda weird, violating even. Like who invited some guy named Derek to this world and why is he knocking on the door? I know a lot of people feel this way, but random townies are kinda just terrible. And the only way I know of to stop them from spawning every time I play is to get 80 non-random Sims and place them into the world, which brings us to the issue I'm trying to solve.

There are not even nearly 80 MHA CC characters available, no matter how hard you look. There's around 50-60 that I've ever been able to find with any sort of CC (usually just hair) and I figure someone might as well make that last push. I'd invite anyone else to join in and make it to 80 with me if you like, that's my goal. Not to say I'll be finished then, but that's when I will consider myself to have been successful at this.

With that in mind, there's several characters in particular that I'd really like to include in that total, and a few who haven't appeared yet in any official MHA games. I'm relatively new to blender and I'm doing my best to advance my knowledge as quickly as I can to make these characters as good as I possibly can.

The next big release I'll be putting up here is going to have 4 of these characters, and I hope that should help close the gap a bit faster. Cheers!

there is only just the one i've posted but i will take the opportunity to talk more about more of these queer feelings! it spawned from my girlfriend and i talking about phyrexian high school/college AUs and the fact that magic doesn't have a lot of canon disabled characters; i thought (in my opinion) sheoldred would not be able-bodied in a human au and it is essentially an exploration of two characters who are brutal and terrifying but who get to learn vulnerability if they are just normal humans on earth.

5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?

i used to let my girlfriend and co-writer do all of this to remain aloof and cool but i've decided that everyone is cringe in the end and so every commenter will receive all my undying gratitude (as long as it keeps being a reasonable number.)

6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

i think my current WIP, which is shadowzel ballet academy AU has a lot more potential for an angsty ending; shadowheart is pretty set from the start to be on a very limited clock to keep being able to dance and probably will not have any prospects to by the time it ends but i think negotiating the gap between expectations for the future and what reality brings you still has a lot of potential for growth and learning and self-acceptance so it's probably not going to be super brutal if i'm being honest. i like to give queer girls at least happy-ish endings if i can.

7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

in the middle of writing more of these queer feelings i decided i wanted the very end to be sheoldred and elesh norn, now happily girlfriends, saying they love each other but specifically because i want anyone who feels they relate to either character to know that they are loved and cherished if not immediately then at least through me, through the act of love of sharing parts of myself through my writing. the ending of that fic is about solidarity and love for queer women and disabled women and ND & mentally ill women. absolutely the most earnest happy ending i've ever written.

8. Do you get hate on fic?

i never have and hopefully never will but know this: if being a shadowzel blog means i am a karheart anti, i will take up arms in defense of what i believe is good and right.

9. Do you write smut?

haven't yet, probably won't, nothing against it, just isn't for me i don't think, for a number of reasons.

10. Do you write crossovers?

i find that a lot of my inspiration to write fic is in the intersection of a piece of media and the au i want to write. i don't know if college aus count as crossovers but while i haven't written anything including many media franchises, i think there is a transformation and a fitting-together of pieces that feels very similar in my great enthusiasm for a modern/period earth AU, which has been a lot of what i've written.

11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?

no but i would be kind of honored, honestly. if what i've written is so good that someone else tries to put their name on it, i'm flattered! (uh but please don't though it's still probably bad ;-; my girlfriend said she would beat you up if you stole my writing.)

12. Have you ever had a fic translated?

oh lord no, but the above answer times a thousand. if someone was to go to that effort i feel like i'd need to send them a special gift basket with seasonal fruits and everything.

13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?

yes! more of these queer feelings was co-written from the very beginning with my now-girlfriend, and though i think we probably would have ended up together anyway by knowing each other, i don't think the writing process did anything at all to dissuade us from our mutual romantic interest.

14. What’s your all-time favourite ship?

before bg3 i don't know if i would have had an answer, maybe like mailee or katara/yue or something but i didn't have particular ships i was super into. that being said, shadowzel has hit me full force and even when it isn't being nominated for goty those ladies are still going to be living rent-free in my head.

15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but probably won’t?

i've been messing around with some wolfic (FFXIV player character, for those unaware) that is probably either just for me or only to inform my roleplay in that game; i have a document but it's probably never getting posted anywhere. still, i think about it and add things sometimes.

16. What are your writing strengths?

i think images and ideas or concepts are my strong suit. i'll have ideas for characters or a scene or a description of something, and try to develop my writing around what i feel is a strong central idea.

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

actual narrative structure and more traditional prose fiction skills are not where i developed my writing skills. my english literature education focused largely on poetry, and my extracurricular writing was almost all text-RP so there's a lot of stuff i haven't practiced.

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?

i am a mostly monolingual american and while i have retained some french from speaking it at home with family and from school, it's conversational and jokes at best. that being said if i can get a « qui me frappe avec ce poisson ? » in anywhere i will absolutely try.

19. First fandom you wrote for?

i don't want to talk about the atla OCs RP beyond "those happened, and for a lot of other fandoms as well" but more of these queer feelings was the first time i gave anything a serious go with the intention to produce something good enough i'd be proud to post it.

i'm going to copy john darnielle and say of course i'm always the most invested in the new thing when i have something new i'm working on, so most of the thoughts i'm having are about hoping other people like shadowzel ballet AU because i'm proud of it, but queer feelings will always have a place in my heart. maybe it's trite but i think i've done a good job with the writing i've put serious effort into; i hope any readers think the same.

Threading with Sketti

I like doing multiple threads with people, but for my own sake, have to limit it to 3 plotted threads per character. +1 NSFW thread if desired, and crack-y short threads don't count towards the total.

Sometimes if it seems like I've dropped an ongoing thread, my brain has registered the last reply to it as a good place to stop. If you don't agree, feel free to poke me about the thread and I'll reply!

If I feel our muse's introduction thread hasn't hit a good stopping point, I won't plot a new one until it gets there.

If you want a new plotted thread when we have the three already going, we need to come to a consensus on which ongoing thread we can drop.

Obviously everyone has preferences and certain moods for certain topics, and I am not immune to that. I can very much psych myself up for something and forget about other things. Please (nicely) poke me if you feel I've done this and want me to focus our thread again.

Well, friends, I've been talking about doing it for almost two years, now. Starting the next billing cycle, it's finally going to happen: I am updating the reward tiers to better reflect my ability to deliver on my promises.

The two most significant changes I'm making are that most rewards are going down at least one tier, and the patron-only podcast is going away. 

$1 patrons are getting a lot more. That's partly because I'm hoping to entice more patronage, but mostly because I can't seem to be trusted to make sure I'm posting to the right tier level when I click "publish". Also, the distinction between "authorial navel gazing" and "updates on behind-the-scenes projects" is ... razor thin, at best.

I don't know how many of you actually listened to the patron-only podcast. I hope it wasn't dear to you. Actually, I hope it was, because it physically hurt me to make it. Those twenty-to-thirty-minute recordings took me two or three hours two write, record, and edit, and every minute of it was agony, because I hate the sound of my own voice with a fiery passion. I sound neither butch enough to match my actual face nor femme enough to match my self-image nor alien enough to make the difference interesting; I just sound like some fuckin' nerd, and I hate it.

Other changes include rebranding all the tiers, removing the email address reward (which did not turn out to have any public appeal), and the photo print rewards (which I failed to deliver on). I may change the names again if I can think of a more stylish or coherent scheme.

If these changes make you want to downgrade or cancel your support, I totally understand. I am, in effect, arbitrarily changing the terms of service.

Thank you all so much for your patronage and support over the years. I hope that, having taken a bit of pressure off of myself, I will be able to better deliver on my promises going forward.

How profitable are [tumblr] Checkmarks?

Hello. My name is Robin. Recently I ran two polls in order to calculate an estimate of how much money tumblr has made from checkmarks, because I'm a massive statistics nerd. Here are the results.

As shown above, the vast majority of tumblr users, as I had expected, have not purchased any checkmarks, myself included. 2.6% bought checkmarks for themselves, and a further 0.6% bought checkmarks for both their own blog and someone else's.

If we assume that the results of this poll are reflective of tumblr users as a whole, (unlikely, due to the small sample size, but this is just an estimate), then this means 3.6% of tumblr's users have bought at least two checkmarks.

According to Statistica.com, tumblr has 496 million users, so 3.6% of them is around 17,856,000. So, still an awful lot of people, even if it doesn't seem so proportionally.

I asked participants on this poll who voted yes to also vote on how many they had bought, across every blog they'd bought them for.

The sample size for this poll was significantly smaller, because the amount of users who voted yes is significantly smaller than the amount who voted no. However, it seems that some people who didn't vote on the first poll voted on the second, as 3.6% of 351 (351 being the total number of votes on the first poll) is 12.636, so it would have been reasonable to expect 12 or 13 votes. This won't have any effect on my estimate, but I thought it was interesting enough to metion.

Due to the limitation of polls having a maximum of 10 options, I will be counting every vote for 20+ as 20, for the sake of simplicity. Let me remind you that this is only an estimate, not an exact number.

Using our calculations from the first post, let's take the total number of users who have bought checkmarks to be 17,856,000.

All of the votes were on either end of the spectrum, which surprised me. I had assumed most would be around 2-8, with a couple of votes at most for 20+, which turned out not to be the case.

Now, on to the calculations. What i'm sure all two people reading this are here for.

64.7% of 17,856,000 is 11,552,832 people who bought checkmarks once.

5.9% of 17,856,000 is 1,053,504 people who bought checkmarks twice.

5.9% of 17,856,000 is 1,053,504 people who bought checkmarks three times.

5.9% of 17,856,000 is 1,053,504 people who bought checkmarks nine times.

17.6% of 17,856,000 is 3,142,656 people who bought checkmarks ten times.

(11,552,832 x 1 purchase) + (1,053,504 x 2 purchases) + (1,053,504 x 3 purchases) + (1,053,504 x 9 purchases) + (3,142,656 x 10 purchases) = 57,728,448 total purchases of Important Internet Checkmarks.

But finding out how many times checkmarks had been bought is not all we came here to do. We still need to find out how much money that is equivalent to.

Two checkmarks (one purchase) costs $7.99. Using this and the previous calculation that (approximately) 57,728,448 purchases of checkmarks have been made, we can deduce that the total amount of money (let me reiterate that this is only an estimate, and probably not the actual amount) tumblr has made thus far from checkmarks is a grand total of:

$461,250,299.52, aka four hundred and sixty-one million, two hundred and fifty thousand, two hundred and ninety-nine dollars, and fifty-two cents.

Today I saw a post about writing the name of your blog with the first letters of song titles and that sounded fun. The rules are to do it in a new post and you’re also supposed to tag people or something but I’m not doing that.

As additional personal rules I didn't use the same source twice and only used things if I could remember at least some of what they sounded like. I did look up lists of songs I thought I'd be familiar with though (eg, looking up the Bastion soundtrack to remind myself what titles were in there). Also I decided not to use any songs starting with A or The because I didn't feel like making a call on whether they could be skipped and they didn't start with K anyway.

Round brackets (parenthesis) in the artist half of the song list indicate names of video games. For over half of them I had to look up the actual people. Also, even if it's not from the game I put it there if there's a specific game with the song in it that I strongly associate with the song.

Square brackets indicate whatever I want them to indicate.

Finding two K songs was a struggle. Like, why is the famous Flowering Knight remix called "Night of Knights / Knight of Nights" instead of the other order? I could've really used that one. My "know what it sounds like" rule blocked the use of Kairi from Kingdom Hearts: Melody of Memory, Knight to C Sharp from Crypt of the Necrodancer, Knight Man Stage from Megaman 6, and Killing in the Name Of from Guitar Hero 2 (yes, I know it's not "from Guitar Hero 2", but that’s why I’m familiar with it). I guess I used another Crypt of the Necrodancer song for the other K so forgetting Knight to C Sharp didn't make a difference.

Honorable mentions to "Twister" - Takeharu Ishimoto (The World Ends With You), "Setting Sail, Going Home" - Darren Korb (Bastion), and "Wellerman" - The Longest Johns. Also, earlier versions of this list included "Canon in D" - Pachabel and "Roundabout" - Yes, but I wanted to stick with somewhat shorter songs in case I felt like putting together a Youtube playlist so I could put it on and listen to the whole thing or something. I like it when individual songs don't steal the whole show. I'd consider skipping the Kirby theme song if I did put it together as well.

Somewhat amusingly, I notice that I don't know what anything sounds like in the list of the person I copied this from (notahorseindisguise). I've maybe heard New Invention once, but from that group I pretty much only listen to "Leave Me Alone" and "Do It All The Time" and I don't remember any other songs. I'd probably like others but I don't have much of a habit of actively seeking new music.

...in fact, looking over everyone else's answers in the post I linked, I think there are only 3 songs I recognize as something I've heard, total. "Dragula", "YMCA" (although not specifically as played by their pep band), and maybe "Everybody Talks" (literally the words "Everybody talks, everybody talks, everybody talks" come to mind sung a specific way, but I have no memory of what the rest is like). Also, why so many in one thread? Did I maybe misinterpret the rules when they said "Make a new post"?
